Off goes Rowdy 1971 - Ron Yeats signed for Tranmere Rovers. The giant Scottish centre-half had netted sixteen goals in 454 outings for the reds, captaining us to two League titles, our first FA Cup, Second Division title and FA Charity Shield. He was one of Bill Shankly’s first and most inspired signings, arriving for just £22,000 from Dundee United in July 1961. A new home record 1972 - We registered our 21st consecutive home League win as a Peter Cormack goal handed us a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace. This was a club record, and a record in the top-flight until we reached 24 in Ju

Taylor out 1959 - Phil Taylor resigned as Manager, paving the way for the arrival of Bill Shankly the following month. He had made 345 appearances as right-half before and after the war, netting 34 times and winning one League title, and captaining the side. He joined the coaching staff when he retired from playing in 1954, and became Manager two years later, staying in the job for three years. However, he has the unhappy distinction of being the only reds boss never to manage the side in the top flight. He said, “The strain of it all has made me very tired at times and I decided, great as i

Last-gasp heartache 1989 - Having already claimed the FA Cup in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster, we only had to avoid defeat at home to Arsenal by two clear goals or more to clinch our second double in four seasons. The Gunners took the lead in the second half when Alan Smith was judged to have headed in from an indirect free-kick, one of his nine goals against the reds. We held on until stoppage time, when Michael Thomas burst through to grab the decisive, heart-breaking second and take the title back to Highbury for the first time since 1971. Bruce Grobbelaar was playing his 300

Euro comeback 2019 – We entertained Barcelona in the second leg of our UEFA Champions League Semi-final, having lost the first meeting 3-0 and being without Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah due to injury. Divock Origi gave us an early lead, but we suffered another setback when left-back Andy Robertson had to be withdrawn at half time. However, substitute Gini Wijnaldum bagged a brace in a two-minute flurry before Origi completed a 4-0 rout from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s quickly taken corner. Forward Daniel Sturridge came on to make his 160th and last appearance for the club. Rush scored

Clinching the title 1990 - We secured our eighteenth and most recent League title, beating Queens Park Rangers 2-1 at Anfield thanks to an Ian Rush strike and a John Barnes penalty, after Roy Wegerle had put the visitors in front. Recent reserves keeper Paul Harrison was our mascot that day! UEFA Cup glory 1976 - Jimmy Case became our first substitute to score in a cup final as we beat Club Brugge 3-2 at Anfield in the first leg of the UEFA Cup Final, despite being 2-0 down inside the first quarter of an hour thanks to strikes from Raoul Lambert and Julien Cools. Ray Kennedy also scored, with

Yanks in 2007 - Liverpool FC announced that George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks now owned 98.6% of the club’s shares and intended to compulsorily acquire the remaining shares. Chief Executive Rick Parry said, “The incredibly high level of acceptance of the offer shows shareholders have faith in the vision outlined for the club by George Gillett and Tom Hicks.” The two Americans remained in control until October 2010. We’re all on our way to Wembley 1965 - We beat Chelsea 2-0 in a Villa Park Semi-final en route to our first ever FA Cup triumph. John Mortimore had a goal disallowed for the
