Ged in charge
1998 - Gérard Houllier took over as sole Manager, with Roy Evans leaving after four years in the hot-seat. Uncle Roy’s only trophy in charge had been the Coca Cola Cup in 1995, although he led us to four consecutive top four finishes in the League. Ged went on to lead us to the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield before departing in the summer of 2004.

Bowing out
1986 - Kenny Dalglish won his 102nd and final Scotland cap as they beat Luxembourg 3-0 in a Euro ’88 qualifier at Hampden Park. Alan Hansen won his 25th cap in the same game, while Jan Mølby and future reds Peter Beardsley and Mark Wright also played in qualifiers that day.
1932 – Scottish outside-right Danny McRorie played his 35th and final reds game in our 2-2 draw at Blackburn Rovers. Dave Wright and Gordon Hodgson struck our goals.

Striking against their old club
2000 - Gary McAllister opened the scoring with his first reds goal, against his former club, as we beat Coventry City 4-1 at Anfield, added to by an Emile Heskey brace and a Steven Gerrard strike. Ex-red David Thompson scored City’s blistering consolation, while future red Chris Kirkland was in the Sky Blues’ goal.

Facing Spurs
2008 – We lost 4-2 at holders Tottenham Hotspur in a Carling Cup Fourth Round tie following a fairly dismal defensive performance. Right-back Stephen Darby made his reds bow while Damien Plessis bagged his only goal for the club, with Sami Hyypiä also on target. Roman Pavlyuchenko and Fraizer Campbell each struck twice for the home side.
1983 - We were held to a 2-2 top-flight draw at White Hart Lane with Michael Robinson and Ian Rush on target. Alan Hansen played his 300th reds game that day, with Steve Archibald bagging the last of his six goals against the reds and Glenn Hoddle netting the final one of his four past us, from the spot.

Milly’s milestone
2022 – James Milner played his 600th Premier League game for any club in our 3-1 defeat of Southampton at Anfield as Nathan Jones took charge of the Saints for the first time. Roberto Firmino headed us into an early lead, but Che Adams swiftly levelled. Darwin Núñez bagged a brace before the break to secure the victory.

Most recently
2023 – We beat Brentford 3-0 in the League at Anfield, with Mohamed Salah on target either side of the break, before Diogo Jota completed the scoring.

Swiss-rolled over
2002 - We drew 3-3 at Basel to crash out of the Champions League at the first group stage. The reds had gone in at the half-time break 3-0 down, but fought back with goals from Danny Murphy, Vladimír Šmicer and Michael Owen, scoring the rebound from his own saved spot-kick, although it was not quite enough.

Tommy’s treble
1927 - Tommy Reid bagged a hat-trick in our 5-2 top-flight win over The Wednesday at Anfield, with Gordon Hodgson adding a brace.

Beating PNE
We have twice beaten Preston North End in First Division meetings at Anfield on this day in history.
1898 - Hugh Morgan netted twice as we won 3-1 with George Allan also on the scoresheet.
1910 - Ronald Orr, Jack Parkinson and Sam Bowyer were all on target as we won 3-0, Tom Watson’s 500th League game in charge of the reds.

Derby spoils shared
1921 - Dick Forshaw struck as Everton held us to a top-flight draw at Anfield in a game that also counted towards the Lancashire Senior Cup.

European defeat
1969 - We lost 1-0 in the first leg of our Fairs Cup Second Round tie to Portuguese side Vitória de Setúbal. We won the second leg 3-2, going out on the away goals rule.

Knocked out
1974 - Our first League Cup encounter with Middlesbrough ended in a 1-0 defeat in the Fourth Round at Anfield, with Willie Maddren netting in injury time, shortly after Alec Lindsay had his penalty saved by keeper Jim Platt. This came after we had seen off basement side Brentford and Second Division Bristol City.

In charge
2004 - John Toshack was appointed Manager of Wales for the second time. He led them to 21 victories in 53 games in charge, before leaving by mutual consent in September 2010.
2001 - Academy Chief Scout Dave Moss was appointed Manager of Macclesfield Town, his only time in the hot seat. He led them to 33 victories in his 102 games in charge, leading them to mid-table finishes in consecutive seasons in the basement division before being sacked in October 2003. He joined the reds in February 2006.

First and last caps
2020 – Keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili won his last Under-21’s cap before joining Valencia on loan from Dinamo Tbilisi as Georgia beat Slovakia 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Tbilisi.
2014 – Future red Roberto Firmino won his first senior cap for Brazil in their 4-0 win in Turkey, with Philippe Coutinho also in action. On the same day, Divock Origi netted for Belgium as they beat Iceland 3-1 in another friendly in Brussels, with Harry Wilson on target for Wales Under-19’s and Lloyd Jones winning his fourth and last England Under-20’s cap. Jordon Ibe, future reds Christian Benteke, Diogo Jota and Gini Wijnaldum, and ex-red Javier Mascherano also represented their countries that day.

2015 – Future red Dominic Solanke played for England Under-21’s for the first time as they were held to a goalless draw in their European Championships qualifier against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Sarajevo. Fiorentina’s Federico Chiesa made his bow at the same level as Italy beat the Czech Republic 4-1 in a friendly in Pistoia.
2003 - Reds youngster Ryan Wilkie made his debut for Scotland Under-18’s as they lost a friendly 1-0 to Germany in Herzlake.
1986 - Jim Beglin won his fifteenth and final cap for the Republic of Ireland as they lost 1-0 in a friendly in Poland. John Aldridge was making his seventh and final appearance as an Oxford United player, while future red Ray Houghton and ex-red Kevin Sheedy both also played.

Up against the Gunners
1938 - We met Arsenal at Anfield with Berry Nieuwenhuys grabbing a brace in a 2-2 top-flight draw. Ted Drake bagged one of his six strikes against the reds, with Alf Kirchen netting one of his four past us.
2006 - We made our first trip to the Emirates Stadium, continuing our away day blues by being well beaten, 3-0, thanks to goals from Mathieu Flamini, future red Kolo Touré and William Gallas. Peter Crouch played his 200th club League game.

Luis for his country
2005 - Luis García bagged a treble, his first goals for his country, with Fernando Morientes also on target as Spain thumped future red Martin Škrtel’s Slovakia 5-1 in a World Cup play-off in Madrid. His hat-trick consisted of a header, right-foot and left-foot strikes. The other Spanish goal came from future red Fernando Torres who was on target in his third consecutive international. Ex-red Michael Owen grabbed a brace in England’s 3-2 friendly defeat of Argentina in Geneva, with Peter Crouch changing the game as a substitute, Paul Konchesky winning his second and final cap and only one as a West Ham United player, and Steven Gerrard and future reds Joe Cole and Maxi Rodríguez also featuring.

Vladimír Šmicer was also on target for his country, as the Czech Republic won the first leg of their World Cup play-off against John Arne Riise’s Norway 1-0 in Oslo, with ex-red Milan Baroš also playing. Another ex-red also struck in Helsinki, as ex-red Daniel Sjölund netted in Finland’s 2-2 friendly draw with Estonia, his first senior goal for his country. Meanwhile, Jan Kromkamp won his final cap as a Villarreal player, and eighth to date, as the Netherlands were beaten 3-1 by Italy in a friendly at the Amsterdam ArenA, with future red Ryan Babel on target. Xabi Alonso, Djibril Cissé, Harry Kewell, future reds Philipp Degen, Dirk Kuyt and Kolo Touré, and ex-reds Nicolas Anelka and Alou Diarra also played for their countries that day.

Internationals on target
2021 – Jordan Henderson scored as England thumped Albania 5-0 in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley, with Owen Beck scoring his first goal for Wales Under-21’s as they thrashed Gibraltar 7-0 in a European Championships qualifier and Dominik Szoboszlai on target for the first time as a RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. player, bagging a brace in Hungary’s 4-0 win over San Marino in Budapest. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Morgan Boyes, Tom Clayton, Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah, Sepp van den Berg, future red Federico Chiesa ex-reds Ki-Jana Hoever, Liam Millar, Xherdan Shaqiri, Raheem Sterling and Luis Suárez all also appeared for their countries that day, with Steve Clarke taking charge of Scotland.
2020 - Dominik Szoboszlai scored his last goal for Hungary while a Red Bull Salzburg player as they beat Iceland 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Budapest.

2015 – Future red Naby Keïta scored his first goal as a Red Bull Salzburg player for Guinea, the only one of their World Cup qualifier in Namibia. Future red Javier Manquillo and ex-reds Sebastián Coates and Krisztián Németh also played for their countries that day.
2011 – Craig Bellamy struck for Wales as they thumped Norway 4-1 in a friendly in Cardiff, with ex-red John Arne Riise winning his hundredth cap and future red Joe Allen also in action. Meanwhile, Stewart Downing, Glen Johnson and future red James Milner faced Pepe Reina and ex-reds Xabi Alonso, Álvaro Arbeloa and Fernando Torres as England beat Spain 1-0 in another friendly at Wembley. Ex-red Carl Medjani and future red Kolo Touré also played for their countries that day.

2016 – Ex-red Joe Allen played for his country again, as Wales were held to a 1-1 draw in a World Cup qualifying draw in Cardiff, with Sadio Mané and future red Thiago Alcântara also featuring in qualifiers that day. Trent Alexander-Arnold struck for England Under-19’s as they lost a European Championships qualifier 3-2 in Wales, with Ben Woodburn also in action. Future reds loanee Victor Moses nabbed a brace in Nigeria’s 3-1 World Cup qualifying defeat of Algeria, with ex-red Carl Medjani skippering the visitors while winning his last cap while with Club Deportivo Leganés. Meanwhile, future red Dominic Solanke scored twice for England Under-20’s as they beat Iran 4-1 in a friendly in South Korea, with Ovie Ejaria also playing. Future red Dominik Szoboszlai featured for Hungary Under-19’s on the same day, with Abel Xavier taking charge of the senior Mozambique side and Bernard Diomède managing France Under-18’s.
2017 – Future red Xherdan Shaqiri helped Switzerland to reach the World Cup Finals in Russia as a goalless draw with Northern Ireland in Basel was enough to take them through their play-off 1-0 on aggregate, with Dejan Lovren also representing his country.

Signing on
2009 – Reserves centre-half Daniel Ayala signed a new contract to keep him at Anfield until 2012. He played five senior reds games before moving to Norwich City for £850,000 in August 2011.
2019 – American midfielder Matteo Ritaccio signed as a professional, having been at the Academy since August 2018. He signed a new deal in May 2021.

Rewarded
2012 - Daniel Agger was named Denmark’s Footballer of the Year for the second time. On the same day, the club took three prizes in the Northwest Football Awards in Manchester. Martin Škrtel was named the Premier League Player of the Year, with Martin Kelly claiming the Rising Star Award and the club and Standard Chartered jointly winning the Corporate Social Responsibility Campaign of the Year prize for Seeing is Believing.

1988 – Steve Nicol equalised as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Millwall.
1977 – We lost 2-0 at Queens Park Rangers, thanks to goals from Leighton James and Stan Bowles.
1966 – Ian St. John and Roger Hunt were on target as we won 2-0 at Newcastle United.
1960 – We beat Norwich City 2-1 in a Second Division fixture in L4, with Roger Hunt and Jimmy Harrower on the scoresheet.

1955 – We beat Notts County 2-1 in a Second Division encounter at Anfield with Billy Liddell and Geoff Twentyman scoring.
1949 – We won 3-1 at Charlton Athletic with Charlie Vaughan opening the scoring with one of his four goals against the reds. Cyril Done netted before Billy Liddell bagged a brace, including one from the spot.
1924 – Huddersfield Town returned home 3-2 victors with Dick Forshaw and Jock McNab on the scoresheet. Billy Smith netted the first of his four past us, with Billy Cook and Charlie Wilson also scoring.
1892 – We won a Lancashire League game 4-1 at Fleetwood Rangers as Malcolm McVean struck twice, with Jock Smith and John Miller also on target.

Stan on loan
1987 - Young Irish defender Steve Staunton went to Bradford City on loan. He played eleven times for the Bantams, as they narrowly missed out on promotion to the top flight.

Dudek for the Pope
2003 - Jerzy Dudek played for Poland as they beat Italy 3-1 in a friendly match played in Warsaw to commemorate Pope John Paul II’s silver jubilee.

2020 – Andy Robertson captained Steve Clarke’s Scotland as they beat Serbia on penalties after their European Championships qualifier ended 1-1, sending them through to the Finals the following year. Harry Wilson, future red Ibrahima Konaté and ex-reds Péter Gulácsi and Danny Ward also featured for their countries.

1991 – Future red David James played for England Under-21’s in their 2-1 European Championships qualifying defeat in Poland.
1980 – Avi Cohen featured as Israel were held to a goalless draw by Sweden in a World Cup qualifier in Tel-Aviv.
1947 – Billy Liddell faced Cyril Sidlow as Wales beat Scotland 2-1 in the British International Championships at Hampden Park.
2018 – Future red Calvin Ramsay played for Scotland Under-16’s as they drew 1-1 with Wales in Oriam.
