Cup final glory 1984 - Joe Fagan won his first trophy as reds boss as a Graeme Souness strike handed us the Milk Cup in a replay at Maine Road against Everton. 1902 - We also faced Everton with our friendly at Goodison ending goalless. In comes Cally 1960 - Ian Callaghan signed as a professional. He went on to make a record 857 reds appearances, netting 68 times as he helped us to five League titles, two FA Cups, one European Cup, two UEFA Cups, UEFA Super Cup and three FA Charity Shields. 1898 – Half-back Barney Battles re-signed from Dundee for £20, but only played once before j

Wembley glory 1983 - We won our third consecutive League Cup, 2-1. Norman Whiteside opened the scoring for Manchester United with the first of his four goals past us before Alan Kennedy equalised at Wembley. The game went into extra time, with our fitness proving the greater as Frank Stapleton had to come back into defence with Gordon McQueen going up front, due to cramp. Ronnie Whelan, who had scored twice in the previous season’s Final, won the game for us with a beautifully curled shot past the helpless Gary Bailey. Bob Paisley was sent up to lift the trophy in his final season as boss.

Auf wiedersehen twice 1965 - We faced 1. FC Köln in a European Cup Third Round replay in Rotterdam after two goalless draws. This third game ended 2-2 after extra time, with Ian St. John and Roger Hunt on target. That meant that the tie was decided on a coin toss. Skipper Ron Yeats called tails but the first attempt landed upright in the mud, although the Germans claimed it was leaning towards heads! Fortunately, it came down the right way at the second attempt so we went through. 1971 - We drew 1-1 at Bayern München in the second leg of our Fairs Cup Fourth Round tie, with Ian Ross on tar

Happy birthday Jerzy 1973 - Jerzy Dudek was born in Rybnik. The big Pole in our goal made 186 reds appearances after signing from Feyenoord for £4.85m in August 2001, helping us to glory in Istanbul, as well as the Worthington Cup in 2003. He left to join Real Madrid in July 2007, although he barely featured for their first team. A new boss 1951 – Don Welsh took charge of his first reds game as Jack Haigh nabbed the only goal of our top-flight meeting with Charlton Athletic at Anfield. He had been officially appointed eighteen days earlier. Away goals galore 1985 - John Wark ne

Treble from the spot 1986 - Jan Mølby scored a hat-trick of penalties at Anfield past ex-red Steve Ogrizovic in our 3-1 League Cup Fourth Round replay defeat of Coventry City. This is reputedly the first reds game that current skipper Steven Gerrard attended. Rafa’s record 2008 - Steven Gerrard headed the only goal of the game as we entertained Olympique de Marseille in a Champions League group game. This was Rafael Benítez’s 66th European game in charge, overtaking Bob Paisley’s club record. Happy birthdays 1915 - Post-war keeper Cyril Sidlow was born in Colwyn Bay in North Wa

Birth of the legend 1913 - Bill Shankly was born in Glenbuck, Ayrshire. He was the ninth of ten children, and the youngest of five boys. Words cannot fully explain his importance to the history of Liverpool Football Club. However, his honours as reds boss between December 1959 and July 1974 included three League titles, two FA Cups, UEFA Cup and the Second Division championship. 1936 - Centre-half John Nicholson was born in Liverpool. He signed as a professional in January 1957, but only made one senior appearance before joining Port Vale in August 1961, playing over 200 games for them.

Winning the cup 1992 - We beat Second Division Sunderland 2-0 to win our fifth FA Cup. Ian Rush scored his fifth FA Cup Final goal, to break Stan Mortensen’s record, after Michael Thomas had opened the scoring, with Dean Saunders also hitting the bar. Graeme Souness led the team out just 48 hours after leaving hospital. However, the wrong medals were presented to each team, and so the two sides had to swap them afterwards! Ray Houghton was playing his 202nd and final reds game. Youngest ever 2010 - Left-back Jack Robinson became the reds’ youngest ever player, aged sixteen years and 2
