Trebles away from home 1998 - Robbie Fowler scored a hat-trick after Paul Ince had headed the opener as we won 4-2 at Aston Villa, who were unbeaten in their first twelve games, their most successful ever start to a League campaign. This was Gérard Houllier’s first win in sole charge. Villa’s Stan Collymore was sent off in the second half for striking out at Michael Owen, while Dion Dublin had a penalty saved by David James to deny him his hat-trick, although he still netted two of his seven goals past us. Steve Harkness was playing his hundredth League game for the reds. 1936 - Centre-for

Le Boss taken ill 2001 - Gérard Houllier was admitted to Broadgreen Hospital with chest pains during our Anfield fixture with Leeds United. Thankfully he went on to make a full recovery. Future red Harry Kewell scored for the Yorkshire outfit, before Danny Murphy equalised, handing us our 600th Premiership point. The reds therefore became the third team, after Manchester United and Arsenal, to reach this milestone. First ever Merseyside derby 1894 - We played Everton for the first time in a senior game, unfortunately going down 3-0 at Goodison Park in our ninth ever game in the top fl

Chico’s first 1983 – Steve Nicol grabbed his first reds goal, a late winner in our 1-0 League victory at Queens Park Rangers. Reds in Moscow 2002 - We became the first English team to beat Spartak Moskva on their own patch as we came from behind through a Michael Owen hat-trick of header, left-foot and right-foot shots handed us a 3-1 Champions League group win. Grégory Vignal suffered the rare indignity of coming on as a substitute, and then later himself being substituted. 1992 - David Burrows had to play the last six minutes of our European Cup Winners’ Cup game at the same club

Goalscoring feats at St. James’ Park 1987 - Steve Nicol grabbed a hat-trick in our 4-1 win at Newcastle United in front of the live TV cameras, following John Aldridge’s opener, who also had another strike disallowed for offside. Neil McDonald converted from the spot for the home side. 1961 - Right-half Gordon Milne scored his first reds goal to help us to a 2-1 Second Division win there, with our other score coming from a George Heslop own goal. Kevin Lewis had a penalty saved by United keeper Dave Hollins. Dirk off the mark 2006 - Dirk Kuyt grabbed his first reds goal, and 150th c

Another super win 2005 - We fell behind to a goal from CSKA Moskva’s Velizar Dimitrov in Monaco, but a brace from substitute Djibril Cissé and a Luis García strike secured us the UEFA Super Cup for the third time, 3-1 after extra time, as we reached a century of goals under the stewardship of Rafael Benítez. The cup was lifted by stand-in skipper Jamie Carragher. Danny’s wonder goal 2006 - Daniel Agger scored his first reds goal, a superb long-range effort to level the scores in our 2-1 home defeat of West Ham United after Bobby Zamora had put the Hammers ahead in our fiftieth League

Red legends are born 1893 - Legendary keeper Elisha Scott was born in Belfast. He kept goal for the reds on 468 occasions across his 21 years with us after signing from Broadway United in September 1912, and ended his career with two League title medals, joining Belfast Celtic as Player/Manager in June 1934. 1873 - Forward Harry Bradshaw was born in Liverpool. He became the reds’ first international in February 1897 when he won his one and only England cap, at outside-left. He signed from Northwich Victoria in October 1893 and struck 53 times in 138 reds games, before moving on to Tottenha

Happy birthdays 1961 - Steve McMahon was born in Liverpool. He signed from Aston Villa for £350,000 in September 1985 and struck fifty times in 277 reds appearances in his six years at Anfield, during which time he won three League titles, the FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields. He left the reds to sign for Manchester City for £900,000 in December 1991. 1895 – Inside-left Dick Forshaw was born in Preston. Heysel: a black day in our history 1985 - If April 15th is the saddest day in the club’s history, May 29th is surely the lowest. 39 football fans died at the Heysel stadium in Brussels before our European Cup Final against Juventus. Although many factors contributed to the tragedy, it is inescapable that violence by reds fans played a major role in the deaths of 32 Italians, four Belgians, two Frenchmen and one man from Northern Ireland. Crouchie at the treble 2007 - Peter Crouch scored the perfect hat-trick of right-foot, header and left-foot shot as we thumped Arsenal 4-1 at Anfield to gain some measure of revenge for having been dumped out of both the FA and League Cups by the Gunners in L4 already that season. John Arne Riise played his 200th League game, while Daniel Agger grabbed the other goal, with William Gallas on target for the visitors. This was George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks’ first game as owners of the reds. 1969 - We were held to a 1-1 draw by Arsenal at Anfield. Tommy Smith converted a penalty at the s
