Winger Jack Cox struck our goal. We’re all off to Wembley 1984 - The first all-Merseyside cup final ended in a goalless draw, after extra time. The game was notable for a failed penalty appeal for handball against Alan Hansen, and an Alan Kennedy goal that was disallowed for offside. We clinched our fourth consecutive League Cup in the replay three days later. 1950 - We won through to our first Wembley FA Cup Final, beating Everton 2-0 at Maine Road thanks to goals from Bob Paisley and Billy Liddell. First and lasts 1895 - Inside-forward Frank Becton scored on his reds debut in a 3-2 home First Division defeat by Sunderland, with Jimmy Ross also on the scoresheet. Left-back Billy Dunlop made his reds bow in the same game, which was the first time we had ever entertained the Wearsiders. Jimmy Millar scored one of his four goals past the reds with John Campbell adding a brace. 1921 – Winger Chris Harrington played his fourth and final reds game as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Tottenham Hotspur, with Dick Forshaw on target. 1933 – Outside-left Gordon Gunson played his 87th and last reds game as we were held to a 2-2 top-flight draw at Anfield by Blackburn Rovers. Gordon Hodgson and Harold Barton netted for the reds, while Tommy McLean struck one of his five goals against us, with Ernie Thompson also scoring. In comes Bill 1899 – Keeper Bill Perkins signed from Luton Town for £200. He went on to play 117 times, including every game in our first League championship winning season in 1900/01. He returned to the amateur game in 1903, joining Northampton Town. No longer in training 1893 – Trainer Wally Richardson had to step in to play his only reds game in our Lancashire League fixture against Rossendale United at Anfield due to injuries. Inside-right Jock Smith netted his fifth reds goal in his eleventh and final game as we won 2-1, with Malcolm McVean also on target. Beating the Geordies We have twice beaten Newcastle United in the top flight at Anfield on this day in history. 2000 - We won 2-1 as substitute Jamie Redknapp headed a dramatic winner. Titi Camara had opened the scoring with his tenth and final reds goal before Alan Shearer nodded in a leveller, one of his eight goals against the reds. 1975 - John Toshack netted twice as we triumphed 4-0, with future and past Magpies Kevin Keegan and Terry McDermott also netting. International beginnings and end 1981 - Steve Heighway won his 33rd and final cap for the Republic of Ireland as they lost 1-0 to Belgium in a World Cup qualifier in Liège. Future red Michael Robinson also played with future red Joe Corrigan also in international action. 1998 - Future red Craig Bellamy won his first senior international cap as Wales were held to a goalless draw by Jamaica in a friendly at Ninian Park. Robbie Keane made his senior bow for the Irish on the same day while fellow future red Vladimír Šmicer was on target in the Czech Republic’s 2-1 friendly win in Olomouc. Also in action were Paul Ince, Øyvind Leonhardsen, Steve McManaman, Michael Owen and future reds Markus Babbel, Bernard Diomède, Dietmar Hamann, Stéphane Henchoz, Paul Jones and Christian Ziege. 2011 – Future reds keeper Simon Mignolet made his senior international bow as Belgium won a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in Austria. 2017 – Corey Whelan won his first Under-21’s cap for the Republic of Ireland in their 1-0 European Championships qualifying defeat of Kosovo in Dublin. 2018 – Rigobert Song took charge for the first of two times in his first spell in charge of Cameroon as they won a friendly 3-1 in Kuwait. 2022 – Song was Manager for the first game of his second period as Cameroon boss as they lost a World Cup qualifier 1-0 to Algeria in Douala. Harvey Elliott made his debut for England Under-21’s as they thumped Andorra 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Bournemouth, with Curtis Jones also featuring, while future red Fabio Carvalho debuted for Portugal Under-21’s as they drew 1-1 with Iceland in Portimão. Oakley Cannonier debuted and Isaac Mabaya won his only cap at this level, with both scoring for England Under-18’s as they beat Sweden 3-2 in a tournament game in Malaga. Mohamed Salah’s Egypt beat Sadio Mané’s 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Cairo. Morgan Boyes, Leighton Clarkson, Terence Miles, Tyler Morton, Kostas Tsimikas, Sepp van den Berg and future reds Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Calvin Ramsay all also appeared for their country that day. On target at the wrong end 1978 – Phil Thompson scored an own goal after Jimmy Case had opened the scoring at Molineux. A second-half Kenny Dalglish brace secured a 3-1 defeat of Wolverhampton Wanderers. 2023 – Ex-reds loanee Ozan Kabak put through his own net while winning his first cap as a TSG 1899 Hoffenheim player in Türkiye’s 2-1 European Championships qualifying win in Armenia. On the same day, Curtis Jones scored for England Under-21’s as they beat France 4-0 in a friendly in Leicester, with Harvey Elliott and ex-red Yasser Larouci also in action. Jarell Quansah netted his first goal for England Under-20’s in their 4-2 defeat by the USA in Spain, with Dominic Corness and Tyler Morton also featuring. Also in international action that day were Luke Chambers, Kieran Morrison, Andy Robertson and ex-reds Emre Can, Danny Ward, Neco Williams and Harry Wilson, with Steve Clarke taking charge of Scotland. Irish reds for both sides 1992 - Ex-red John Aldridge bagged a penalty in the Republic of Ireland’s 2-1 friendly defeat of Roy Hodgson’s Switzerland at Lansdowne Road. Ronnie Whelan put though his own net, while ex-reds Kevin Sheedy and Steve Staunton also featured. This was Sheedy’s first cap as a Newcastle United player. John Barnes and future reds Nigel Clough, Karlheinz Riedle and Paul Stewart all also played for their countries that day. Mixed fortunes against the Trotters 1922 - We beat Bolton Wanderers 3-1 at Burnden Park in a First Division fixture, with Dick Forshaw grabbing a brace and Harry Chambers also on target late on with his fiftieth League strike for the reds. Jock McNab was sent off for retaliation between our second and third goals. Joe Smith struck one of his twelve goals past us as David Ashworth took charge of the reds for the hundredth time in the League. 1940 - We also met them in a friendly, losing 1-0 at Anfield. The Wright move 1982 - Mark Wright joined Southampton from Oxford United in a deal that saw £80,000 and forward Keith Cassells also head south, with midfielder Trevor Hebberd leaving the Saints. He had only made eleven senior appearances for the U’s, but established himself with England while at The Dell. On the move en masse 2004 - Three ex-reds reserves switched clubs. Forward Jon Newby left Huddersfield Town to join York City on loan, but he failed to find the net in seven games for the Minstermen. Midfielder Danny Williams joined Bristol Rovers from Kidderminster Harriers on a free transfer, for whom he made just six first-team appearances, scoring once, before rejoining Wrexham in May 2004. Meanwhile, Layton Maxwell, who scored in his only senior reds game, joined Swansea City on non-contract terms. He played for the Swans three times, moving on to Mansfield Town in December 2004, after a spell with Rhyl. Also on the move 1999 - Steve Nicol was released by Conference side Doncaster Rovers after one season at Belle Vue. On the same day, Paul Dalglish joined Norwich City on loan from Newcastle United. He played five times before signing permanently in May of that year. Also, Mike Newell re-joined Crewe Alexandra from Aberdeen on a free transfer. He only played four times in this second spell, before joining Doncaster Rovers three months later. Meanwhile, keeper Jørgen Nielsen re-joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan, again failing to make their first team. 1988 - Julian Dicks left Birmingham City for West Ham United for £300,000, after one goal in 102 appearances as they struggled in the Second Division. On the same day, current Assistant Manager joined Sunderland from Swansea City for £70,000, after 45 strikes in 201 outings in this first spell in south Wales. 2010 – Another former reserves custodian, Tony Warner, signed for Charlton Athletic having recently been released by Hull City although he did not play a first-team game in his two months with the Addicks. Former reserves forward Astrit Ajdarević joined Hereford United on loan from Leicester City on the same day, making just one substitute appearance for the Bulls. 2014 – Centre-half James Smith joined Telford United on loan from Southport. Youngsters off the mark 1908 – Centre-half Norman James was born in Liverpool. He signed from Braby’s Athletic in April 1929, making eight senior appearances before moving on to Bradford City in May 1933. 2005 - Daniel Agger bagged his first two goals for Denmark Under-21’s in their 5-1 European Championships qualifying thumping of Kazakhstan in Copenhagen. 1985 - Aston Villa’s Mark Walters netted his first England goal at the same level while winning his fourth cap, as they beat the Republic of Ireland 3-2 in a friendly at Fratton Park. Future reds on target for their countries 1981 - John Wark grabbed Scotland’s goal as Northern Ireland held them to a World Cup qualifying draw at Hampden Park. On the same day, Kevin Keegan won his first cap since his return from Germany, as England lost 2-1 to Spain in a friendly at Wembley. Ray Clemence and Phil Neal also featured. Meanwhile, ex-red Joey Jones played as Wales won a qualifier 1-0 in Turkey. 2019 – Ex-red Raheem Sterling netted as England thumped Montenegro 5-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Podgorica, with Jordan Henderson winning his fiftieth cap and future red Darwin Núñez and ex-red Nikolay Mihaylov also in action. 1992 - Jari Litmanen also scored at Hampden Park as Finland and Scotland drew 1-1 in a friendly. Fellow future red Gary McAllister played for the Scots. 1997 – Forward Haukur Ingi Guðnason netted for Iceland Under-19’s as they lost 2-1 to Belgium in the Italy Tournament. 1998 - Fernando Morientes struck twice on his debut for Spain as they thumped Slovenia 4-0 in Vigo. 2008 - Ex-red Florent Sinama-Pongolle scored as France A beat Mali 3-2 in a friendly in Charléty, with future red Andy Carroll scoring his last goal for England Under-19’s in their 3-1 friendly victory over Russia in Milton Keynes. 2013 – Future red Gini Wijnaldum bagged a brace as the Dutch Under-21’s beat Norway 4-1 in a friendly in Waalwijk, with future red Thiago Alcântara on target while captaining Spain at the same level, with fellow future red Alberto Moreno also featuring. Bayern München’s Emre Can won his fifth and last cap for Germany Under-19’s as they beat Ukraine 2-0 in a friendly in Wuppertal, with future red Joe Gomez playing for England Under-17’s. Other reds games 1972 – John Toshack headed in the only goal of our trip to Southampton. 1939 – Willie Fagan scored the only goal of Brentford’s visit to Anfield from the spot, but was later sent off. 1911 – We beat Notts Country 2-1 in L4 with Arthur Goddard bagging a brace. 1910 – Sheffield United held us to a goalless draw at home. 1899 – Nottingham Forest won 1-0 at Anfield. More recent internationals 2021 – Thiago Alcântara won his first cap as a reds player as Spain were held to a 1-1 draw by Greece in a World Cup qualifier in Granada, while Takumi Minamino featured in Japan’s 3-0 friendly defeat of South Korea in Yokohama City as he played for the first time since joining Southampton on loan with Wataru Endō netting for the only time while playing for VfB Stuttgart. Meanwhile, ex-red Raheem Sterling netted for England in their 5-0 trouncing of San Marino in another qualifier at Wembley. Future red Mohamed Salah scored as Egypt drew 1-1 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Nigeria, with future red Takumi Minamino netting for Japan Under-23’s and Carl Medjani winning his first cap as a Levante U.D. player as Algeria thumped Ethiopia 7-1. Philippe Coutinho, Martin Škrtel, future reds Alisson Becker, Wataru Endō, Naby Keïta, Virgil van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum, and ex-reds Sebastián Coates and Victor Moses also played for their countries that day. 2017 – Wijnaldum played for the Netherlands again, as they lost a World Cup qualifier 2-0 in Bulgaria, with ex-red Nikolay Mihaylov also in action. Also representing their countries that day were Rhian Brewster, Caoimhín Kelleher, Ragnar Klavan, ex-reds Péter Gulácsi and Toni Silva, and future reds Ozan Kabak, Xherdan Shaqiri and Dominic Solanke with ex-reds Academy Manager Steve Cooper taking charge of England Under-17’s. 2011 – Dirk Kuyt struck while winning his 75th cap for the Netherlands in their 4-0 thumping of Hungary in a Euro 2012 qualifier in Budapest. Milan Jovanović won his last cap as a reds player as Serbia beat Northern Ireland 2-1 in another qualifier in Belgrade. Meanwhile, Alberto Aquilani and ex-reds Xabi Alonso, Álvaro Arbeloa, Milan Baroš and Fernando Torres all also featured in qualifiers, while Chris Mavinga won his fourth and final cap for France Under-20’s as they won a friendly 2-1 in Peru. More internationals in action 1945 – Matt Busby captained an FA XI as they beat Belgium 3-2 in an FA Tour game in Brussels. 1987 – Ex-red Avi Cohen played for Israel as they lost a friendly 2-0 to West Germany in Tel-Aviv. 1993 – Future red Brad Friedel played for the USA in their 4-1 friendly defeat in Honduras. 2001 – Future red Kolo Touré featured as the Ivory Coast held Sudan to a goalless draw in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Omdurman, with future red Pepe Reina playing for Spain Under-21’s on the same day. 2005 - Scott Carson, Anthony Le Tallec, Darren Potter, John Welsh, ex-red Arnaud Bühler and future reds Alberto Aquilani, Ramon Calliste, Glen Johnson, James Milner and Gary O’Neil all featured in European Championships qualifiers for the Under-21’s, with Le Tallec coming on as a substitute and then later himself being substituted. Italy beat Scotland 2-0 in Pavia, England drew 2-2 with Germany in Hull, France were held 1-1 by Switzerland, while the Irish lost 3-1 in Israel. 2007 – Touré featured in another Africa Cup of Nations qualifier as Ivory Coast won 3-0 in Madagascar. 2009 – Future red Jordan Henderson won his only cap for England Under-19’s as they were held to a goalless draw by the Czech Republic in a friendly in Walsall, with Martin Kelly also featuring. On the same day, future red Jonjo Shelvey played for the Under-17’s as England beat Portugal 1-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Hungary. 2013 – Jonjo Shelvey scored as England Under-21’s thumped Austria 4-0 in a friendly in Brighton, with the visitors having two players dismissed. Jordan Henderson, Jack Robinson, Raheem Sterling, Andre Wisdom and future red Nathaniel Clyne all also featured.

Dan the man 2013 - Daniel Sturridge signed from Chelsea for £12m. He scored an impressive 67 times in 160 reds games, although most of these came from off the bench in later years. He moved on to Trabzonspor in August 2019. Souey the skipper 1982 - Graeme Souness captained Liverpool for the first time, leading us to an impressive 4-0 win at John Toshack’s Swansea City in the Third Round of the FA Cup. Phil Thompson had been stripped of the captaincy following our Boxing Day defeat to Manchester City that left the reds twelfth in the table. Alan Hansen scored in his 200th reds game with Ian Rush bagging a brace and Mark Lawrenson also on target. On the same day, ex-red Ian Callaghan played in his 88th FA Cup game as Crewe Alexandra lost 3-1 at home to Sc***horpe United, with 79 of these games played while with Liverpool. Stevie on his way out 2015 - Steven Gerrard announced he would be leaving the club at the end of the season. He made 710 appearances for the reds in total, notching 186 goals, helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups and three League Cups as well as winning the PFA and Football Writers’ Player of the Year awards once apiece. 2018 – Pepijn Lijnders left the coaching staff to take over as Manager of N.E.C. in the Netherlands. He was sacked four months later, returning to Melwood as Assistant Manager in June 2018. 1936 – Left-back Jack Tennant moved on to Bolton Wanderers. He had arrived at Anfield from Torquay United in May 1933, appearing 42 times without notching, later guesting with the reds during the war. Swapping right backs 2006 - Josemi joined Villarreal in exchange for Jan Kromkamp. Josemi was Rafael Benítez’s first signing, joining us from Málaga for £2m in July 2004, but made just 35 reds appearances. Kromkamp only stayed with the club for eight months, playing eighteen times, including a substitute appearance as we won the FA Cup later that year. A fab century 2022 – Fabinho played his hundredth League game for the reds in our 2-2 draw at Chelsea. Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah put us two goals ahead, but Mateo Kovačić and Christian Pulisic both struck before the break to level the scores. Jürgen Klopp and Alisson Becker both missed the game due to suspected positive COVID tests. Running down the wing 1981 – Argentine winger Maxi Rodríguez was born in Rosario, Santa Fe. He bagged seventeen goals in 73 reds outings after signing for free from Club Atlético de Madrid in January 2010, returning to his native land to re-join Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys in July 2012. Also in the Cup 1971 - We beat Aldershot 1-0 in the FA Cup Third Round at Anfield, who were then 92nd in the League and managed by ex-red Jimmy Melia, with John McLaughlin grabbing the only goal, his last for the reds. Emlyn Hughes played his 200th reds game that day. The final Ox 2023 - We lost 3-1 at Brentford as Ibrahima Konaté put through his own net with Yoane Wissa also on target in the first half. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Came off the bench to net his eighteenth and final goal for the club shortly after the break, but Bryan Mbeumo completed the scoring late on. Also recently 2020 – We beat Sheffield United 2-0 at Anfield to maintain a thirteen-point lead at the top of the table, with Mohamed Salah on target early on. Sadio Mané scored after the break to ensure we went a full year unbeaten in the Premier League. On the same day, Alisson Becker was named as the winner of the Samba d'Or for 2019, given to the best Brazilian playing in Europe, the first keeper to win this award. 2017 – We drew 2-2 at Sunderland as we took the lead twice through Daniel Sturridge and Sadio Mané, but Jermain Defoe levelled twice from the spot, the last of his six strikes past us. 2016 – We lost 2-0 at West Ham United, thanks to headed goals from Michail Antonio, one of his five past us, and ex-red Andy Carroll. 2008 - We succumbed to a late Titus Bramble strike as Wigan Athletic scored their first ever League goal against us to secure their first point against any of the ‘big four’ in 21 attempts, cancelling out a Fernando Torres effort, his sixteenth goal of the season. This was the sixth time that Steve Bruce had led a side against us in the Premier League, and he had yet to taste defeat in these fixtures. 1995 - We thumped Norwich City 4-0 at home to bring us to a maximum twelve points over the festive period, thanks to goals from Ian Rush, John Scales and a Robbie Fowler brace. On the same day, future red Haukur Ingi Guðnason played for Iceland Under-17’s as they beat the host nation 2-1 in the Israel Tournament. 1996 – Guðnason played for the Under-19’s as they lost 5-1 to Hungary in the same tournament. 2006 - We drew 2-2 with Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium, failing to equal a club record eleven consecutive League victories. Kewley’s moment in the spotlight 1978 - Local forward Kevin Kewley made his one and only appearance in the reds first team when he came on as a substitute for Terry McDermott in our 2-0 defeat of Middlesbrough. Goals from David Johnson and Steve Heighway secured the points for the reds. Kewley’s senior Anfield career must rank as one of the shortest ever, as he left the club the following month to join Dallas Tornado in the USA. 1939 - We also faced Boro, going down 3-0 at Ayresome Park with left-back Keith Peters playing his only reds game. Micky Fenton netted two of his nine goals against the reds, with Jackie Milne also on target. Kenny in the wars 1984 - Kenny Dalglish had his jaw broken by Kevin Moran’s support brace on his hand as we drew 1-1 with Manchester United at Old Trafford with Craig Johnston nabbing our goal, followed by a late equaliser from Norman Whiteside, one of his four goals past us. Kenny later signed Moran when he was Manager at Blackburn Rovers. Shanks’ first 1960 - Jimmy Melia nabbed the only goal of our Second Division fixture at Hull City to secure Bill Shankly’s first away win as Manager. Cameron’s last 1893 – Forward Jonathan Cameron scored his fifth and final reds goal in our 4-1 win at Fairfield in the Lancashire League. Hugh McQueen, John Miller and Tom Wyllie were all also on target. Mixed fortunes against the Mackems 2013 – We beat Sunderland 3-0 at Anfield, with Luis Suárez setting up Raheem Sterling who lobbed Simon Mignolet to open the scoring before the Uruguayan bagged himself a brace. 1911 – We were thumped 4-0 at Roker Park, with Jackie Mordue netting one of his six goals against the reds, Tim Coleman nabbing one of his nine past us and George Holley and John Cowell also on the scoresheet. Passing on 1949 - Right-half Jock McNab died in Bootle. He helped us to two League titles in the 1920’s, netting six times in 222 reds games, having signed from Bellshill Athletic in November 1919. 1995 – Midfielder Ian Frodsham died from a spinal tumour, aged just nineteen. He had joined as an Under-11, turning professional when he was seventeen. An indoor arena at the Academy in Kirkby was named in his honour, as well as an award for the young player of the year. Two ton Maurice 1909 – We went down 3-0 at Chelsea. Jimmy Windridge scored before George Hilsdon scored one of his five goals past us from the spot. Fred Rouse was also on target for the Blues as right-half Maurice Parry played his 200th League game for the reds. Twice against the Geordies and Blades 1922 - We drew 1-1 at Newcastle United, with Dick Forshaw on the scoresheet early on. 1932 - Harold Barton struck twice as we won 4-2 in L4, with Gordon’s Gunson and Hodgson also on target. 1899 - We won 2-0 at Bramall Lane thanks to goals from Johnny Walker and Jack Cox. 1897 - Sheffield United held us to a goalless draw at Anfield, just twenty-four hours after we had won 4-1 at Bolton Wanderers. No longer the boss 1954 - Bill Shankly resigned as Manager of Grimsby Town. Happy birthday Sami 1973 – Ex-reds centre-half Sami Hyypiä was born in Helsinki. The mighty Finn played 464 reds games, netting 35 times and helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two League Cups and two UEFA Super Cups following his £2.5m bargain capture from Dutch side Willem II in May 1999. He left the club in the summer of 2009 to sign for Bayer 04 Leverkusen on a free transfer, subsequently moving into management. Other reds celebrating 1998 – Trent Alexander-Arnold was born in Liverpool, signing pro terms on his seventeenth birthday. He was at the Academy since the age of six, striking sixteen times in 273 senior appearances across his first seven seasons as he helped the reds to claim the League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield. 1890 – Centre-half Walter Wadsworth was born in Bootle. The hard man was signed from Ormskirk in April 1912, going on to score eight goals in 242 reds games, some alongside his brother Harold at outside-right as he helped us to claim back-to-back League titles in 1922 and 1923. 1990 – Uruguayan centre-half Sebastián Coates was born in Montevideo. He signed from Nacional for £7m in August 2011, scoring twice in 24 games before joining Sunderland for £4m in July 2015 after a season there on loan. He played for Uruguay Under-20’s on his nineteenth birthday as they were beaten 3-1 by Brazil in their World Cup Finals Round of Sixteen encounter in Egypt. 1995 – Reserves centre-back Lloyd Jones was born. He signed from his hometown club Plymouth Argyle for £150,000 in June 2011, turning pro in May 2013 after sitting on the bench in our Premiership visit to Fulham earlier that month. He skippered our Under-21’s for more than a season, moving on permanently to Luton Town in January 2018 after a series of loan spells. Didi makes Wembley history 2000 - Dietmar Hamann scored the last ever goal at the old Wembley as Germany beat England 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier. Christian Ziege was winning his first cap as a reds player, with Michael Owen and future red Nick Barmby also playing. Kevin Keegan resigned as England boss that evening. First treble 1893 - James Stott bagged our first ever League hat-trick in our 6-0 Second Division defeat of Middlesbrough Ironopolis, with Duncan McLean scoring his first goal for the club and Hugh McQueen and David Henderson also on target. Harry all smiles 1922 - Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers scored our first ever derby hat-trick in a 5-1 League win at Anfield that also counted for the Lancashire Senior Cup, although his first goal is also sometimes credited as an own goal by keeper Tom Fern. We went behind early on to a Billy Williams strike, but fought back in the second half. Jock McNab and birthday boy Tom Bromilow also struck as we hit the Blues for five for the first time, with the Kop forgetting the opener and adopting a new chant, “One two, one two three, one two three four, five nil”, which is now part of ‘Poor Scouser Tommy’. We went on to claim our third League title that season. 1972 - We hosted another derby fixture when Peter Cormack headed in the only goal of the game. He was one of Graeme Souness’s failed buys, arriving from Tottenham Hotspur for £2.3m in July 1992, scoring three times in 42 uninspiring appearances before leaving for free for Sunderland in March 1996 after a successful loan spell. Most recently 2018 – We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by champions Manchester City, with Riyad Mahrez blasting a late spot kick over the bar for the visitors. Spurs stalemates We have hosted Tottenham Hotspur twice on this day in history, with both matches ending all square. 2007 - We suffered our thousandth draw in the League with Fernando Torres heading a late equaliser after the visitors had come from behind following Andriy Voronin’s opener. Debutants 1961 - Alf Arrowsmith made his reds bow in our 2-0 Second Division defeat at Middlesbrough, our first reverse in the twelfth game of this promotion-winning campaign. Alan Hansen played his hundredth League game that day, with future red Craig Johnston and Božo Janković on target for the visitors. 1986 - Striker John Durnin made his first-team debut in our 3-2 League Cup win at Fulham, with winger Brian Mooney making his only reds appearance, as a substitute for Jim Beglin. Steve McMahon opened the scoring with Jan Mølby adding a penalty to a Paul Parker own goal. A pastoral death 2002 - 1940’s reds centre-forward Arthur Shepherd died. His brothers Joe and full-back Bill also both played for the reds at the same time. Arthur never made our first team in peacetime, but did net twelve times in eleven wartime games for us. Last strikes 1911 – Centre-half Jimmy Harrop scored his fourth and last reds goal as we lost 2-1 at home to Blackburn Rovers. Walter Aitkenhead netted one of his four goals past us, with Johnny Orr bagging one of his five strikes against the reds. 1933 – Chelsea lost 3-0 at Anfield with forward Dave Wright bagging his 35th and last goal for the club. Another rare excursion up front 1899 - Centre-back Alex Raisbeck played his second and final match at centre-forward, as we lost 2-0 at home to Derby County thanks to a Steve Bloomer brace, two of his fourteen goals against us, with forward Abe Foxall playing his only reds game. A Croatian legend honoured 2002 - Igor Bišcan played in Zagreb for a Croatia 1998 side as they lost 2-1 to a Rest Of The World XI in Zvonimir Boban’s testimonial. Gareth Bale became Wales’ youngest ever senior goalscorer, aged just seventeen years and 83 days. On the same day, the record attendance for a home England international away from Wembley Stadium was set as 72,062 saw England held to a goalless draw by FYR Macedonia in another qualifier at Old Trafford. Peter Crouch, Steven Gerrard and future red Stewart Downing all played. Recent reds milestones 2007 - Jamie Carragher’s restaurant Café Sports England on Stanley Street in Liverpool opened. Unfortunately, the business went bust in October 2013. 2011 - Martin Škrtel became a father to Matteo. He had won just four of his 23 League matches in charge. 2008 - Joe Allen joined Wrexham on loan from Swansea City, netting once in just two outings for the Dragons. 1898 – Inside-forward Frank Becton moved on to Sheffield United. The England international had signed from his hometown club Preston North End for £200 in March 1895, notching 42 times in 86 reds games. 2022 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper signed a new contract as Head Coach of Nottingham Forest. He had taken them from bottom of the Championship into the Premier League in his first season but was sacked in December 2023 after leading them to 42 victories in 108 games in charge. -
Title number five 1947 - We clinched our fifth League title when Stoke City lost 2-1 at Sheffield United. We therefore finished one point ahead of Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers, and two ahead of the Potters. The news came through on the day that we clinched the Liverpool Senior Cup by beating Everton 2-1, thanks to goals from Jack Balmer and William Watkinson. The match was actually halted five minutes from time so that director George Richards could address the crowd by loudspeaker with the news. RIP Gordon Hodgson 1951 - Legendary forward Gordon Hodgson died of cancer in Burslem. He had bagged a club record seventeen hat-tricks amongst his 241 goals in 377 games after signing from Transvaal in November 1925. He could not claim a club medal in his time at Anfield, moving on to Aston Villa in January 1936 for £3,000. In comes Darwin 2022 - Darwin Núñez signed from SL Benfica for an initial £64.2m. He was on target as he came off the bench to help us claim the FA Community Shield on his debut, bagging a total of fifteen goals in 42 outings in his first campaign. Happy birthdays 1857 – The club’s first Manager, William Barclay, was born in the Kilmainham Auxiliary of the South Dublin Workhouse. He worked as a Secretary-c**-Manager for the first four years of the club’s existence, having previously been Vice Chairman of Everton. 1878 – Outside-right Arthur Goddard was born in Heaton Norris, Stockport. He signed from Glossop for £460 in February 1902 and grabbed 77 goals in 414 reds games, helping us to Second Division and League championships. He was nominated into the club’s official Hall Of Fame, for the 1910-20 era. Scott’s record 2007 - Scott Carson equalled the record number of England Under-21’s caps by claiming his 27th, to move level with both Jamie Carragher and Gareth Barry. England were held to a 2-2 draw by Italy in a European Championships Finals group game in the Netherlands, with future red Alberto Aquilani on target and Newcastle United’s James Milner also in action. Carson went on to win 29 caps at this level in total, although the record is now Milner’s on 46. Nando’s treble 2009 – Fernando Torres bagged a hat-trick as Spain beat New Zealand 5-0 in a Confederations Cup group game in South Africa. More Spaniards on target 2006 - Xabi Alonso grabbed his first senior international goal while winning his 27th cap in Spain’s 4-0 thumping of the Ukraine in a World Cup Finals group game in Leipzig, with future red Fernando Torres also on the scoresheet. Luis García and future red Andriy Voronin also featured. 2008 – Torres netted again as Spain beat Sweden 2-1 in Innsbruck, with David Villa’s late winner ensuring they reached the Quarter-finals of the European Championships as group winners with a game to spare. Meanwhile, future red Sotirios Kyrgiakos played as Greece lost 1-0 to Russia in Salzburg. 2012 – Ex-red Torres bagged a brace as Spain thumped the Republic of Ireland 4-0 in a Euro 2012 group game in Gdansk. Ex-reds Xabi Alonso, Álvaro Arbeloa and Robbie Keane all also featured, with future red Mario Balotelli also playing that day. Steven Gerrard skippered a team that also included Jordan Henderson, Glen Johnson, Raheem Sterling and future red Adam Lallana, while ex-red Gabriel Paletta was on the winning side. Also at the World Cup 2002 - Abel Xavier appeared as a substitute in Portugal’s 1-0 defeat by South Korea in Incheon, winning his twentieth and final cap. Meanwhile, Brad Friedel saved a penalty from Poland’s Maciej Żurawski, his second spot-kick save in consecutive games, as the USA lost 3-1 in Daejeon. Jerzy Dudek did not play. These results ensured that neither Portugal nor Poland qualified for the knock-out stages. 1974 – Future red Kenny Dalglish played his first game at the World Cup Finals as Scotland beat Zaire 2-0 in the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund. Czech mates at Anfield 1996 - The Czech Republic beat Italy 2-1 in a Euro ‘96 group match at Anfield, with Pavel Nedvěd bagging his first senior international goal. Patrik Berger started the game, later being replaced by Vladimír Šmicer. It was the first time either of them had played in L4. Berger arrived at Anfield only two months later, while his compatriot joined him in another three years. 2004 – Future red Christian Poulsen featured in a European Championships Finals group game as Denmark held Italy to a goalless draw in Guimarães. 2016 – Ex-red Krisztián Németh played as Hungary beat Austria 2-0 in a group game in Bordeaux. Final caps 2015 – Right-back Nathaniel Clyne won his last England cap before moving to Anfield, with Raheem Sterling playing for the last time as a red as Roy Hodgson’s side beat Slovenia 3-2 in a European Championships qualifier in Ljubljana. Xherdan Shaqiri played for Switzerland for the final time as an Internazionale player, scoring in their 2-1 qualifying win in Lithuania. Mohamed Salah won his last cap while on loan at Fiorentina, netting his only goal while with La Viola, as Egypt beat Tanzania 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Alexandria. Marko Grujić played for Serbia Under-20’s for the seventh and last time, scoring in a penalty shoot-out as they beat the USA to reach the Semi-final of the World Championships Finals in New Zealand. He had moved up to Melwood from the Academy full-time in the summer of 2005, having skippered the Under-18’s during 2004/05. 1928 – Scottish right-half Jock McNab left the reds to join Queens Park Rangers. He had signed from Bellshill Athletic in November 1919 and helped us to two League titles in the 1920’s, netting six times in 222 reds games. On the same day, forward Jimmy Walsh moved on to Hull City. He had signed from his hometown club Stockport County in May 1922 and netted a brace on his reds bow, bagging a total of 27 goals in his 77 reds games. 2016 – It was confirmed that Portuguese midfielder João Teixeira would sign for SL Benfica on 1st July, with the reds getting a compensation fee of £240,000. He had netted once in eight games since arriving from Sporting Clube de Portugal for £830,000 in January 2012. 2019 – Ex-reds scout Jonathan Woodgate was appointed Head Coach of Middlesbrough, with Robbie Keane joining him as part of the coaching staff. A red is born 1869 - Inside-forward Edgar Chadwick was born in Blackburn. He had won the League with Everton in 1891, and joined Burnley aged thirty. He top-scored with ten goals as they were relegated to the Second Division, before moving on to Southampton in the Southern League. As Burnley still held his Football League registration, the reds had to pay the Clarets £35 in May 1902. However, he only managed 45 reds appearances, netting seven times, and later had a successful career as a coach in Germany and the Netherlands, including guiding the Dutch national side to bronze medals in the 1908 and 1912 Olympics. Redmen held by Boys 1953 - Billy Liddell was on the scoresheet as we drew 1-1 with Swiss side BSC Young Boys at the Yankee Stadium in New York City. Our cause was probably not helped by having played in Toronto the day before. Tony on a run 1969 - Ex-red Tony Hateley scored in the fifth of all seven games of an FA Tour, grabbing four as England thumped Singapore 9-0. He netted a total of seventeen goals on the tour. Youngsters on the world stage 2005 - Future reds Gabriel Paletta and Nabil El Zhar were both on the winning side in group stage games in the Under-20 World Championship Finals in the Netherlands. Argentina beat Egypt 2-0 in Enschede, while Morocco thumped Honduras 5-0 in Doetinchem. International first 1989 – Glenn Hysén skippered Sweden while winning his first cap as a reds player in their 6-0 thumping by Denmark in the Dansk Boldspil Union 100th Anniversary Tournament in Copenhagen. More internationals on target 2008 – Harry Kewell struck while captaining Australia to a 3-1 World Cup qualifying win in Qatar. Nabil El Zhar, future reds Luis Suárez and Kolo Touré, and ex-red Rigobert Song all also featured in qualifiers that day. 2003 - El-Hadji Diouf converted from the spot as Senegal beat Lesotho 3-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. Salif Diao also featured in the match in Dakar. 2019 – Ex-red Philippe Coutinho struck twice, including once from the spot as Brazil beat Bolivia 3-0 in a Copa América group game in São Paulo, with Alisson Becker and Roberto Firmino both also featuring. On the move 2001 - Karl-Heinz Riedle was released by Fulham. He had struck just six times in 35 games for the Cottagers since arriving from Anfield in September 1999. 2013 – Ex-reserves forward David Amoo signed for Carlisle United on a free transfer from Tranmere Rovers. He had struck just once in eleven outings for the Prenton Park outfit. 2017 – Midfielder Darren Potter joined Rotherham United from MK Dons on a free transfer, after twelve goals in 263 outings. 2018 – Midfielder Jordan Williams signed for Rochdale, after a successful loan spell. He had only played one senior reds game. 2021 - Spanish keeper Adrián signed a new contract, although he only played one senior game in his third campaign, to add to the 24 appearances he had already made. Also in international action 2021 – Andy Robertson captained Steve Clarke’s Scotland as they lost 2-0 to the Czech Republic in a European Championship Finals group game at Hampden Park, with Thiago Alcântara playing in Spain’s goalless draw with Sweden in Seville. 1997 – Future red Mauricio Pellegrino featured for Argentina in their 2-0 defeat of Chile in the Copa América in Bolivia. 1978 – Future reds Joe Corrigan and Alan Kennedy both played for England B as they beat New Zealand 4-0 in Auckland. 1973 – Emlyn Hughes played for England in their 2-0 friendly defeat by Italy in Turin. -
Champagne Charlie 1953 - Graeme Souness was born in Edinburgh. He won five League titles, three European Cups, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields after signing from Middlesbrough for £352,000 in January 1978. He moved to Sampdoria for £650,000 in June 1984 after 55 goals in 359 games. He returned to Anfield as Manager in April 1991, although his time as reds boss was considerably less successful, with just one FA Cup triumph before his departure in January 1994. 1990 - Keeper Péter Gulácsi was born in Budapest. He joined on loan from MTK Hungária in August 2007, signing on permanently in September 2008. The young Hungarian made it into our bench 51 times but failed to feature for the first team before joining Red Bull Salzburg in June 2013. 1994 – Another young custodian, Tyrell Belford, was born in Nuneaton. He arrived from Coventry City in the summer of 2009, aged just fifteen. He signed on professionally in July 2011 but moved to Swindon Town on a free transfer two years later after falling behind Gulácsi and Danny Ward in the pecking order. 2004 – Forward Oakley Cannonier was born in Leeds. He joined the reds at Under-12’s level, signing pro terms in July 2021 and then a new deal in August 2022. His most significant impact to date remains as the ball-boy who quickly handed the ball to Trent Alexander-Arnold for his “corner taken quickly” against Barcelona in our UEFA Champions League Semi-final second leg in May 2019. The first sighting of Saint Michael 1997 - Michael Owen netted on his reds debut, becoming our youngest ever scorer aged seventeen years and 144 days. He had come on as a substitute for Patrik Berger less than twenty minutes previously in our 2-1 defeat by Wimbledon at Selhurst Park, nabbing our consolation after a Jason Euell goal and one of Dean Holdsworth’s four strikes past the reds. 2006 - He became a father for the second time, to his first son, named James Michael. Missing out on the League 1991 - Our 2-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest handed the League title to Arsenal, their second in three seasons. Nigel Clough scored the opener with Jan Mølby netting our equaliser from the spot, while David Burrows was playing his hundredth game for the reds. Ian Woan bagged the winner. This game was postponed from the previous December. 1998 - We hosted the Gunners at Anfield after they had already clinched the League title, their first since that 1991 triumph. We thumped them 4-0, with Paul Ince bagging a brace, and Michael Owen and Øyvind Leonhardsen also on the scoresheet. Owen also had a penalty saved by Arsenal keeper Alex Manninger after Matthew Upson had fouled Steve McManaman. Tons up 2023 – Mohamed Salah reached a century of Anfield goals, the only strike of Brentford’s League visit, as he netted for a club record ninth consecutive home game. Meanwhile, Alisson Becker kept his hundredth clean sheet for the club. 1995 – Keeper David James reached a century of reds games in our 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa, with Dwight Yorke netting two of his eight strikes against us. Red endings 1939 – We lost 2-0 at Manchester United in front of just 12,073 spectators. Johnny Hanlon bagged a brace as we ended the season in eleventh. This game saw the final official appearances of right-half Matt Busby, right-back Tommy Cooper, left-half Jimmy McInnes, keeper Arthur Riley, defender Fred Rogers and winger Harman van den Berg. 1996 - Phil Neal’s son Ashley played his final reserves game. Reaching a super cup final 1986 - Kevin MacDonald netted his fifth and last reds goal with Craig Johnston also scoring as we came from behind to beat Norwich City 3-1 at Anfield in the Semi-final second leg of the Screen Sport Super Cup, with Gary Brooke on target for the visitors. Jan Mølby added a penalty as we went through 4-2 on aggregate, with Sammy Lee playing his 295th and last reds game. The reds were presented with the League title prior to this game. The Final against Everton was held over until the following season - which we won, of course. Big wins We have twice won top-flight fixtures 4-1 on this day in history. 1922 - We beat West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns, with a Harry Beadles brace, his final reds strikes, and goals from Dick Forshaw and Jock McNab. Stan Davies struck one of his four goals past us. 1933 - Sheffield Wednesday lost at Anfield, centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw put through his own net with Gordon Hodgson and Dave Wright both striking twice, as we finished the season in thirteenth position. Also recently 2018 – We lost at Chelsea as Olivier Giroud headed in the only goal, one of his seven past us to date, as we stuttered towards a top-four finish in the League. Births and death 1971 - Former reserve keeper Jørgen Nielsen was born in Nykøbing Falster. The Dane never played a senior reds game, but he did sit on the bench 55 times following his £400,000 capture from Hvidovre in August 1997. 1969 - Another former reserve, midfielder Jim Magilton, was born in Belfast. He later had a successful career with Oxford United, Southampton and Ipswich Town before moving into management. 1915 - Tom Watson died. He had been appointed as reds boss in July 1896, doubling his salary to £300 a year from his time at Sunderland, whom he had led to three League titles and three FA Cup Semi-finals in four seasons. He went beyond the remit of Club Secretary at Anfield, involving himself in team selection, tactics and player recruitment, so becoming a Manager in all but name. He led the reds to two League titles and the Second Division championship and our first ever FA Cup Final, remaining in charge until his death. Nando the champion 2001 – Fernando Torres converted a penalty to hand Spain Under-16’s the European Championships, as they beat France 1-0 in the Final in the Stadium of Light in Sunderland, with fellow future reds Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both on the losing side. Firsts for Scotland 1959 - Motherwell’s Ian St. John won his first full international cap as Scotland beat West Germany 3-2 at Hampden Park. The Scots were managed by Andy Beattie, who had guested with the reds during the war, and later joined the backroom staff at Anfield after a successful management career. 1966 – Future red Kenny Dalglish made his first international appearance, bagging a brace as the Under-15’s won 4-3 in Northern Ireland. New ground approved 2008 – The revised design for the club’s new stadium in Stanley Park was granted planning permission by Liverpool City Council. However, work never fully got underway and these plans have now been scrapped. Management ins and outs 1999 - Jan Mølby was appointed Manager of Kidderminster Harriers. He led them to the Conference title in his first season, and then mid-table Third Division safety in the next two years. 2004 - Steve McMahon resigned as Blackpool boss, with fellow ex-red Mark Seagraves dismissed as Assistant Manager on the same day. McMahon had guided the Seasiders to 102 wins in his 350 games in charge, leading them back out of the basement in his first full season, and mid-table security in his following three seasons. Reds on target 2003 – Future red Alberto Aquilani struck for Italy Under-19’s as they beat Northern Ireland 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Andria. 2009 – Christopher Buchtmann scored as Germany Under-17’s beat Turkey 3-1 in a European Championships Finals match in Erfurt, while future red Jonjo Shelvey featured as England drew 1-1 with the Netherlands in Gera. 2011 – Samed Yeşil netted as Germany Under-17’s drew 1-1 with the Czech Republic in a European Championships Finals game in Serbia, with future red Emre Can also playing. Adam Morgan, Brad Smith and Raheem Sterling all featured as England lost 2-0 to Denmark in the same competition that day. 2017 – Future red Ozan Kabak netted for Turkey Under-17’s as they beat Croatia 4-1 in a European Championships finals group game in Rijeka. He played 55 senior reds games without notching, moving on to Bolton Wanderers in August 2013 after a season-long loan there. 1992 - Future reds winger Mark Kennedy signed as a professional for Millwall. He went on to net twelve times in 54 games for the Lions, before moving to Anfield three years later. 1903 – Scottish inside-right George Livingstone was sold to Manchester City. He had signed from Celtic in May 1902 and bagged four goals in 32 games the following season. He went on to help City to claim the FA Cup in 1904. John Sealey scored in his only reds appearance, with Geoff Strong and Alf Arrowsmith also on target as we won 3-1. Full-backs Alan Hignett and Tom Lowry and keeper Billy Molyneux also played their only senior reds games, while left-back Phil Ferns made his 28th and last appearance for the club and inside-left Gordon Wallace played for the 22nd and final time. 1947 - Winger Billy Watkinson scored on his Liverpool debut as we came from behind to win 2-1 at Aston Villa, with Willie Fagan nabbing the other. 1992 - Sami Hyypiä played his first game in the Finnish Premier League, as Myllykosken Pallo-47 won 2-0 at Jazz. 2008 - Jonjo Shelvey became Charlton Athletic’s youngest ever player, aged sixteen years and 59 days. He played the full ninety minutes in their 3-0 Championship defeat at Barnsley. Centre-back Robbie Threlfall, who had scored an own goal in the first leg, bagged the only goal of the game at Old Trafford, to wipe out Manchester United’s 2-1 first leg victory. We went on to secure the trophy by winning a penalty shoot-out 4-3, with keeper David Roberts saving one of United’s spot-kicks. Red endings 2008 - Peter Crouch grabbed his 42nd and final reds goal as we were held to a 2-2 draw at Birmingham City. We had fallen two goals behind to Mikael Forssell and Sebastian Larsson strikes before Crouch and then Yossi Benayoun netted to ensure we qualified for the next season’s Champions League. 1952 – Inside-forward Jack Haigh played his eleventh and last reds game as we ended the season with a 4-0 top-flight thumping at Preston North End, with defender George Whitworth appearing for the ninth and final time. The legendary Tom Finney scored one of his five goals past us, with Charlie Wayman bagging two of his six against us and Angus Morrison netting one of his four. 1902 – Right-back Tom Robertson played his 47th and last reds game as we drew 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers. Walter Whittaker struck one of his six goals against the reds. Johnny Walker scored in his 120th and final reds fame with Sam Raybould having a penalty saved. Hammerings 2023 – We beat West Ham United 2-1 at the London Stadium, despite falling behind to Lucas Paquetá’s strike. Cody Gakpo soon levelled, with Joël Matip heading in a second-half winner. 2006 - Luis García and West Ham United’s Hayden Mullins were both sent off at Upton Park, with Mullins becoming the fifteenth opposition player sent off against us that season. Both therefore had to sit out the FA Cup Final two weeks later as a result. Djibril Cissé bagged a brace either side of a Nigel Reo-Coker goal as we won 2-1. The game was preceded by a perfectly observed minute’s silence for former Hammers manager John Lyall, who died the week before. Four for St. Michael 2003 - Michael Owen bagged four goals, including his hundredth League goal, as we trounced West Bromwich Albion 6-0 at The Hawthorns, our record win over the Baggies. Michael’s fourth goal, our fifth, was our 700th in the Premiership. Milan Baroš added a brace. Gary’s treble 1986 - Defender Gary Gillespie scored a second-half hat-trick past David Seaman, including a penalty, as we thumped already relegated Birmingham City 5-0 at Anfield. Ian Rush opened the scoring, with Jan Mølby also on target from the spot. Future red Julian Dicks was on the losing side that day. This win kept us on course for our sixteenth League title. Mark Walters wins the title for Leeds 1992 - Mark Walters scored the decisive second goal that handed the League title to Leeds United, as we beat Manchester United 2-0 at Anfield despite both Nicky Tanner and Ian Rush having to be substituted inside the first half hour. Ian Rush had scored the first, his first ever goal against the Mancs. The Kop crowed “now you’re gonna believe us, you’ll never win the League”, while Ray Houghton played his 200th game for the club while Barry Venison appeared for the 158th and last time. 2002 - Walters joined Bristol Rovers from Swindon Town on a free transfer. He went on to play nearly a hundred times for the Pirates, netting fourteen times. 1941 - We also entertained United, with Cyril Done and Billy Liddell on target in a 2-1 Wartime League victory. Honoured 2009 - Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres were both voted in the PFA Team of the Year, with ex-red Nicolas Anelka and future red Glen Johnson also included. Derby joy 1943 - We thumped Everton 4-1 at Anfield with Willie Fagan, Jack Balmer, Cyril Done and Berry Nieuwenhuys netting in this Wartime League fixture. A happy day 1973 - Roy Evans married Mary at Liverpool’s Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral. 2010 – Ex-red Álvaro Arbeloa’s wife Carlota gave birth to a daughter, Alba. A double for Quasi 1989 - Peter Beardsley played his first competitive game following the Hillsborough disaster, bagging a brace as England thumped Albania 5-0 in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley. Liddell signs on 1939 - Billy Liddell signed as a professional at Anfield. He went on to strike 228 times in 534 games. Heading towards Madrid 2019 – We thumped Porto 4-1 in the second leg of our UEFA Champions League Quarter-final, having already won the first fixture 2-0. Roberto Firmino and Virgil van Dijk both headed in late on to complete the scoring. Most recently 2023 – We trounced relegation-bound Leeds United 6-1 at Elland Road. Reds birthdays 1894 – Scottish right-half Jock McNab was born in Cleland, Lanarkshire. He signed from Bellshill Athletic in November 1919 and helped us to two League titles in the 1920’s, netting six times in 222 reds games before moving to Queens Park Rangers in June 1928. 1909 - Full-back Ben Dabbs was born in Oakengates, Shropshire. He failed to score in 56 first-team appearances for the reds after arriving from his hometown club in June 1932, moving to Watford in June 1938. 1910 - Defender Fred ‘The Bullet’ Rogers was born in Frodsham, Cheshire. He played 75 reds games without finding the net after signing from Helsby Athletic in 1933. 1912 – Keeper Stanley Kane was born in Workington. He only made six senior appearances after signing on in July 1934, having left Birmingham. He moved on to Southend United in April 1936. 1990 – Former reserves forward Astrit Ajdarević was born in Pristina, Kosova, although he grew up in Sweden. He joined the reds in December 2006, moving on to Leicester City in June 2009 having failed to break through to the first team. Soto’s farewell 2011 - We drew 1-1 at Arsenal in a game with plenty of late drama. We suffered injuries to Fábio Aurélio, Andy Carroll and Jamie Carragher, with young full-back pairing Jon Flanagan and Jack Robinson impressing. He was appointed in April 2010 to locate a buyer for the club from George Gillett and Tom Hicks, which he succeeded in finding in New England Sports Ventures in October 2010, following a series of legal battles. He left his role in the following month and was knighted for his services to business in December 2010. 1982 – Albert Riera was born in Manacor in Mallorca. He signed from R.C.D. Espanyol for an initial £5.5m on transfer deadline day in September 2008, notching five times in 56 reds games before moving to Olympiacos for an initial £3.3m fee in July 2010. In comes Phil 1964 - Phil Chisnall signed from Manchester United for £25,000, after ten goals in 47 United games. A McEnglish debut 1893 - Keeper Billy McOwen made his reds bow as we drew 1-1 at Southport Central in our final ever Lancashire League fixture, with forward John Miller scoring his 25th and last goal in his 24th and final outing for the club. Farewells to legends 1991 - Alan Hansen retired through injury. He had signed from Partick Thistle for £100,000 in May 1977 and made 620 reds appearances, notching fourteen times and helping us to claim three European Cups, eight League titles, two FA Cups, three League Cups and four FA Charity Shields. 2021 – Scottish forward Ian St. John died. He joined from his hometown club Motherwell in May 1961 for a then club record fee of £37,500. The Saint scored 118 goals in 425 games for the reds, including the winning goal in the 1965 FA Cup Final, also helping us to win two First Division titles, the Second Division and FA Charity Shield, before moving to South Africa in February 1971 to join Hellenic. Triple treble This day has brought three reds hat-tricks. 1902 - Sam Raybould netted a treble in our very first senior game on this day, a 4-0 home League win over Manchester City, with Jack Cox adding the other. 1930 - We faced City again, losing a top-flight encounter at Maine Road 4-3, with Jim Smith, Archie McPherson and Gordon Hodgson on the scoresheet. Kenny Dalglish and Ray Houghton scored the goals, but unfortunately Sammy himself could not play due to injury. 1894 – We beat Newton Heath, as Manchester United were then known, 3-0 in a friendly at Anfield in aid of Stanley Hospital. Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw, Douglas Dick and Arthur Worgan all netted. Most recently 2023 – Wolverhampton Wanderers lost 2-0 at Anfield, with Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah both on target late on. 2015 - We beat Manchester City 2-1 with Jordan Henderson scoring before Edin Džeko equalised for the visitors with one of his five goals past us to date. Philippe Coutinho struck the winner. 2014 - We won 3-0 at Southampton, with Luis Suárez and substitute Raheem Sterling on target before Steven Gerrard converted a last-minute penalty, his tenth consecutive success from the spot, while future red Adam Lallana hit the woodwork as Suárez reached a century of League outings for the reds. Reds farewells 1958 - Outside-right Brian Jackson played his 133rd and last reds game as we lost an FA Cup Sixth Round tie 2-1 at Blackburn Rovers, with Bobby Murdoch netting our goal. 1962 - Inside-right Fred Pagnam died. He signed for the reds from Blackpool in May 1914, and so could only bag thirty goals in 39 reds games before joining Arsenal in October 1919, with whom he kept up his remarkable strike-rate. Happy birthday Djimi 1980 - Djimi Traoré was born in Saint Ouen. He signed for the reds from Stade Lavallois Mayenne for just £550,000 in February 1999, and struck once in 141 reds games, helping us to claim the Champions League in 2005. He joined Charlton Athletic for £2m in August 2006, but moved on again just five months later, this time to Portsmouth, before returning to French football. Reds debutants 1989 - Mike Marsh made his reds debut in our 2-0 home League victory over Charlton Athletic, when Peter Beardsley struck for the first time in eighteen matches, later added to by a John Aldridge penalty past ex-reds reserves keeper Bob Bolder. This was our first home fixture in six weeks. 1952 - Left-winger Mervyn Jones and defender George Whitworth both debuted in our 1-1 top-flight draw at Fulham. Jimmy Payne scored before Charlie Mitten converted a spot-kick, the last of his five goals against us. In Europe We have twice travelled overseas for first leg European matches on this day in history, both times returning the happier of the two teams. 1978 - We won 2-1 at SL Benfica in the European Cup Third Round, with Jimmy Case converting a free-kick and Emlyn Hughes netting in torrential rain after we had gone behind. Ex-reds boss Bill Shankly was also in attendance at this match. Harry’s only strike 1913 – Forward Harry Welfare bagged his only reds goal in our 2-1 defeat of Derby County at Anfield, with Billy Lacey grabbing the other goal. Horace Barnes netted the first of his nine strikes past us. Peake’s debut 1909 - Ernest Peake won his first Welsh cap, alongside team-mate Maurice Parry, as they beat Scotland 3-2 in Wrexham in the British International Championships. England scorers off the mark 2006 - Peter Crouch struck his first goal for his country in England’s 2-1 friendly defeat of Uruguay at Anfield, with future red Joe Cole nabbing the other and Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard both also featuring. Crouch was wearing a shirt with the number twelve on the back but 21 on the front! 1967 - Tommy Smith bagged the first of his two goals for England Under-23’s, converting a penalty as they lost 3-1 to Scotland at St. James’ Park. Clubmate Chris Lawler also played. Jari the record-breaker 2006 - Ex-red Jari Litmanen broke Finland’s all-time appearance record, overtaking Arj Hjelm, when he was captain as he won his 101st cap as Roy Hodgson’s side beat Belarus 5-4 on penalties after their Cyprus Tournament Third-place play-off had ended 2-2 in Larnaca. Sami Hyypiä was playing his 75th game for his country. In charge 1981 - Larry Lloyd was appointed Manager of basement side Wigan Athletic. He was in charge at Springfield Park for two years, leading them to promotion in his one full season in charge. 2006 - Steve Staunton took charge of his first game as Republic of Ireland Manager, guiding them to a 3-0 friendly defeat of Sweden at Lansdowne Road, with future red Robbie Keane on target. Other reds games 1975 – Chelsea held us to a 2-2 draw at Anfield as we fell behind to an Ian Britton strike before Steve Heighway equalised in the first half. Steve Finnieston scored the first of his four goals past us, but Peter Cormack nabbed a late leveller. 1969 – Our FA Cup Fifth Round tie at Leicester City ended goalless. The game had to be played on Sixth Round day following seven postponements due to the weather, but we lost the Anfield replay two days later. Fernando again 2010 - Fernando Torres retained the Liverpool Echo’s Sports Personality Of The Year award. R.I.P. Bob Paisley 1996 - The most successful manager in the English game, Bob Paisley, died aged 77. He led us to six League titles, three European Cups, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, three League Cups and five FA Charity Shields in his nine years in charge. R.I.P. Bob. 2020 – Outside-right Brian Jackson died. He signed from Leyton Orient in November 1951 for £6,500 and forward Don Woan. He netted eleven times in 133 reds games before joining Port Vale for £1,700 in July 1958. 1942 - Inside-forward Edgar Chadwick died. He had won the League with Everton in 1891, and joined Burnley aged thirty. He top scored with ten goals as they were relegated to the Second Division, before moving on to Southampton in the Southern League. As Burnley still held his Football League registration, the reds had to pay the Clarets £35 in May 1902. However, he only managed 45 reds appearances, netting seven times, and later had a successful career as a coach in Germany and the Netherlands, including guiding the Dutch national side to bronze medals in the 1908 and 1912 Olympics. Happy birthday Kev 1951 - Kevin Keegan was born in Armthorpe, Yorkshire. He arrived for £33,000 from Sc***horpe United in May 1971 and netted exactly a century of goals in 323 reds games, helping to fire us to the European Cup, three League titles, two UEFA Cups and an FA Cup before moving to Hamburger SV for £500,000 in June 1977. 1975 - Ex-reds reserves midfielder Phil Charnock was born in Southport. He became our youngest ever player in Europe when he came on as a substitute against Apollon Limassol in September 1992, only playing two senior games in total before moving to Crewe Alexandra in December 1986. 1872 – Forward Gerald Dewhurst was born in London. He only played one reds game, guesting for us as we beat Crewe Alexandra 2-0 in a Second Division fixture in March 1894, while remaining an amateur player with Corinthians. 1999 – Winger Bobby Adekanye was born in Ibadan, Nigeria. He arrived from Barcelona in the summer of 2015, playing regularly for the Under-23’s before moving to S.S. Lazio to July 2019. 2005 – Left-back Calum Scanlon was born in Birmingham. He signed from Birmingham City in February 2021, turning pro in March 2022. Trebles galore We have been treated to a number of hat-tricks on this day over the years. 2018 - Sadio Mané netted three times as we trounced Porto 5-0 in the first leg of our UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first leg in Portugal. Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah also struck, with the Egyptian reaching thirty goals in his debut season. 1998 - Michael Owen notched a treble in a 3-3 draw at Sheffield Wednesday. Benito Carbone, Paolo Di Canio and Andy Hinchcliffe struck for the Owls. Our previous two fixtures on this day also witnessed hat-tricks. 1994 - Matt Le Tissier struck the last three of his seven goals past us, including two penalties, in Southampton’s 4-2 League win at The Dell, with the home side racing into a four-goal lead, as his first goal came after just 28 seconds. Also recently 2016 – We thumped relegation-bound Aston Villa 6-0 at Villa Park, with Daniel Sturridge and James Milner on target in the first half. Emre Can, Divock Origi and Nathaniel Clyne all also struck before veteran centre-half headed in his only reds goal. 2015 – We won our FA Cup Fifth Round tie 2-1 at Crystal Palace. Fraizer Campbell scored the most recent of his four goals against us to date after a quarter of an hour, with Daniel Sturridge and Adam Lallana both notching in the second half. Dick’s birthday 1904 - Outside-right Dick Edmed was born in Gillingham. He signed from his hometown club for £1,800 in January 1926 and netted 46 times in 170 reds games before joining Bolton Wanderers in May 1932. He died on his eightieth birthday. Into the final 1978 - We held Arsenal to a goalless draw at Highbury in our League Cup Semi-final second leg to progress 2-1 on aggregate. However, we lost the Final to Nottingham Forest, after a replay. 1984 - We reached our fourth consecutive Final in the competition, winning the second leg of our Semi-final 2-0 at Third Division Walsall thanks to goals from Ian Rush and Ronnie Whelan, to go through 4-2 on aggregate. Unfortunately, seventeen travelling supporters needed hospital treatment when a barrier crumpled in the away end, with the game having to be delayed by a quarter of an hour. Beating the Gunners 2006 - Luis García grabbed the only goal of the game in the dying minutes after Jens Lehmann had beaten out Didi Hamann’s long-range effort, to defeat Arsenal at Anfield in our Premiership encounter. Lehmann had saved a spot-kick from Steven Gerrard in the first half, while Jamie Carragher was playing his 400th reds game. On the same day, young Argentinean centre-back Gabriel Paletta agreed to join the reds from Club Atlético Banfield for £2m. He had to wait until July to arrive, featuring just eight times for the first team before returning to his native land to join Boca Juniors in August 2007. Ged honoured 2002 - Gérard Houllier was given a special UEFA award following our remarkable five-trophy haul in 2001. Ray Kennedy had to step in as an emergency centre-half for this game due to an injury crisis. 1959 - Forward Bobby Murdoch played his nineteenth and final reds game as we lost a Second Division match 3-0 at Cardiff City. He moved on to Barrow seven months later. Derek Tapscott struck two of his six goals past us, with Brayley Reynolds netting one of his seven against the reds, while half-back Johnny Wheeler reached a century of reds outings. Milestone goal 1914 – Tom Miller struck either side of a first-half brace by George Lillycrop, which was our thousandth goal in top-flight football, as we lost 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers with forward Jack Parkinson playing his 219th and last reds game. Zico on the way out 1995 - Phil Neal was sacked as Manager of Coventry City. He had been in charge for sixteen months, only losing twenty of his 67 games in charge. His major legacy to the club was selling Phil Babb to the reds, and signing Dion Dublin, as well as ex-red Mike Marsh. Lacey for Ireland 1914 - Billy Lacey struck twice past ex-reds keeper Sam Hardy, his only goals for his country as a reds player and last for the Ireland side as they beat England 3-0 in a British International Championships game at Ayresome Park. 1919 - Lacey also played for his country in a 2-2 draw with Wales in Belfast in the same competition, and later represented both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Harry’s bow 1925 - Ex-red Harry Beadles won the first of his two caps for Wales as they lost 3-1 to Scotland in the British International Championships at Tynecastle. Kenny against the mighty Emlyn 1973 - Emlyn Hughes lined up against future clubmate Kenny Dalglish as England thumped Scotland 5-0 in a friendly at Hampden Park. 1979 - Avi Cohen won his last cap in his first spell as a Maccabi Tel Aviv player as Israel beat Greece 4-1 in a friendly in Tel-Aviv. He actually scored all the goals in our 4-0 victory that day. 1947 - Cyril Done grabbed his second hat-trick of the season, with Willie Fagan scoring the other two, as we jumped from seventh in the table to second with a 5-0 home win over Grimsby Town in snowy conditions. Jari on target 1997 - Future red Jari Litmanen scored in Finland’s 1-1 friendly draw with Turkey in Denizli. Jamie Carragher, Steve McManaman and future reds Emile Heskey and Paul Ince also played in internationals that day. 2003 - Sotirios Kyrgiakos scored his first goal for Greece, and only one as a Panathinaikos player, as they beat Norway 1-0 in a friendly in Heraklion, with John Arne Riise on the losing side. Lacey for the Irelands 1910 - Future red Billy Lacey played for Ireland as they were held to a 1-1 draw in the British International Championships in Belfast. Farewell to a legend 1978 - Ian Callaghan made his 640th and final League appearance, almost eighteen years after his debut. Unfortunately, this came in a 1-0 reverse at Coventry City. His final ever reds appearance came eight weeks later, in our European Cup Semi-final first leg at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Tons up 2023 – Mohamed Salah made his 200th League appearance for the reds as we lost 3-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers. We fell behind early when Hwang Hee-chan’s cross deflected off Joël Matip. Craig Dawson then netted on his debut, with Rúben Neves on target after the break. 2015 – Steven Gerrard played his 700th reds game as we came from behind to win 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay. Eiður Guðjohnsen opened the scoring from the spot after an hour, the last of his four goals against us, before Neil Danns was sent off for the Trotters. However, Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho both struck late on past future reds keeper Andy Lonergan to send us through. Under-23’s Coach Neil Critchley took charge of a team captained by Curtis Jones, becoming our youngest ever skipper at the age of nineteen and five days, with the first team taking the inaugural Premier League winter break. Midfielders Jake Cain and Elijah Dixon-Bonner, forward Joe Hardy and left-back Adam Lewis all debuted with forward Liam Millar making his only senior appearance, as defender Ki-Jana Hoever played his fourth and last reds game and midfielder Pedro Chirivella turned out for the eleventh and final time. Stalemates galore This day has proven to be a day of draws in our history, with nine of our 22 first-class matches ending in stalemate, including four of the last seven. 2019 – We were held 1-1 by West Ham United at the London Stadium. Derby despair 1939 - We lost the Anfield derby 3-0, with Tommy Lawton bagging two of his six goals past us to add to Stan Bentham’s goal. This win put the Blues back on top of the table, as they went on to claim the title for the fifth time that season. 2009 – Steven Gerrard had to go off injured after a quarter of an hour, with Lucas Leiva sent off in the second half as we went on to lose 1-0 at Goodison in our FA Cup Fourth Round Replay after extra time. God on the move 2009 - Robbie Fowler signed for North Queensland Fury, who play in the Australian A-League. He bagged nine goals in 26 outings before moving on to Perth Glory. Red debuts 1928 - We suffered our first home League defeat to West Ham United when Dick Edmed was on target from the spot as we lost 3-1, with forward Bob Clark making his debut. Jimmy Ruffell bagged two of his four strikes past the reds, with Vic Watson nabbing one of his nine goals against us. 1954 - Forward Derek Brownbill was born in Liverpool. He only made one senior reds appearance, in a 1-1 draw at Birmingham City in September 1973, when he was replaced by our goalscorer, Brian Hall. After leaving Anfield in February 1975, he played more than 140 League games for Port Vale and Wigan Athletic, before emigrating to the USA to play for Cleveland Cobras. Meanwhile, ex-red Rigobert Song captained Cameroon in their 1-0 win over Egypt. 2006 - Song and future red Kolo Touré both converted in a penalty shoot-out after Cameroon’s Quarter-final with Ivory Coast in Cairo ended in a 1-1 draw. Song skippered his country to a 12-11 victory on penalties. 2008 - Rigobert was captain again as they beat Tunisia 3-2 after extra time to reach the Semi-finals once more. 2012 – Future red Touré played in the Ivory Coast’s 3-0 defeat of host nation Equatorial Guinea in a Quarter-final in Malabo. 2015 – Touré featured again as Ivory Coast beat Congo DR 3-1 in the Semi-final in Equatorial Guinea. Almost in charge 2008 - Steve Staunton was appointed Assistant Manager of Leeds United under Gary McAllister. He remained at Elland Road for ten months, leaving in the wake of Gary Mac’s sacking. 2010 – Ex-reds coach Paco Herrera was appointed Manager of Villarreal reserves, but only stayed in the role for four months. Final caps 2000 - Reserves forward Haukur Ingi Gudnason won his third and final cap as a reds player, as a substitute in a 3-2 Nordic Cup defeat of the Faroe Islands in La Manga. 1992 - Øyvind Leonhardsen won his last cap as a Molde player, his eleventh in total, as Norway beat Bermuda 3-1 in a friendly in Hamilton. Fellow future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye also played. 1976 - Joey Jones won his fourth and final Under-23’s cap for Wales, and only one as a red, in their 3-2 defeat by Scotland in Wrexham. The tough defender bagged five goals in 737 reds appearances before retiring in the summer of 2013, leaving him second in the list for the club’s all-time appearance holders. He helped us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, FA Cup, two UEFA Super Cups, two League Cups and two FA Charity/Community Shields. Souness steps down 1994 – Graeme Souness resigned as Manager, having been in charge since April 1991. He led us to the FA Cup in his first full season, his only trophy in three years in charge. He won 65 of his 157 games as boss. Trouncing the Blues 2014 – We thumped Everton 4-0 at Anfield, our biggest derby win since 1982. He crossed the park in March 1934, having claimed the First and Second Division titles and FA Cup with the Blues, and netted eight times in 38 reds games before joining Darwen in August 1936. A Norwegian nightmare 1974 - We secured our record victory, thumping Norwegians Strømsgodset 11-0 at Anfield in our opening game of that season’s European Cup Winners’ Cup campaign. Midfielder Brian Hall was the only outfield player not to score, with Phil’s Boersma and Thompson grabbing a brace apiece. For the record, our other goals that day came from an Alec Lindsay penalty, Steve Heighway, Peter Cormack, Emlyn Hughes, Tommy Smith, Ian Callaghan and Ray Kennedy. Dries Mertens' penalty and a late Fernando Llorente goal condemned us to defeat with the match still goalless with ten minutes remaining. To and from Upton Park 1993 - We undertook a complex transfer deal with West Ham United. Julian Dicks arrived at Anfield, with David Burrows, Mike Marsh and £1.5m heading in the opposite direction. None of them lasted much beyond a year at their new club. Signing on 2007 – Centre-half Daniel Ayala signed from Sevilla for £160,000. He made five senior appearances, sitting on the bench on a further eleven occasions before moving to Norwich City for £850,000 in August 2011. 1992 – Defender Torben Piechnik signed from F.C. Red birthdays 1864 - Right-back Andrew Hannah was born in Renton, joining the reds from his hometown club in May 1892. He was the first ever captain of the club, and cousin of inside-left Davy Hannah who also turned out for the reds in the 1890’s. Andrew made 69 reds appearances, netting once as he led us to the Lancashire League and Second Division titles in his first two seasons at Anfield. 2003 – Midfielder Luca Stephenson was born in Sunderland. He signed pro terms in September 2020. First win at The Dell 1966 - We finally won at The Dell, at our seventh attempt, as Ian’s St. John and Callaghan scored in our 2-1 victory as Ron Yeats played his 200th League game for the reds. 1985 - We also faced the Saints, when Jan Mølby and Kenny Dalglish struck as we won our Screen Sport Super Cup match 2-1 at Anfield, with Danny Wallace on target for the visitors. Fabs at the Olympics 2000 – Future red Fábio Aurélio played for Brazil as they lost 3-1 to South Africa in an Olympics group game in Brisbane. Youngsters starting out 2003 - Unione Sportiva Triestina’s Alberto Aquilani bagged his only goal at this level while winning his first Under-20’s cap in Italy’s 2-0 defeat of Romania. 1998 – Future red Christian Poulsen won the first of his four caps for Denmark Under-19’s as they thumped Switzerland 4-0 in a friendly in Vejle. Youngsters on the world stage 2001 - Fernando Torres played for Spain Under-17’s as they lost 1-0 to Burkina Faso in the World Championship Finals in Trinidad. Unfortunately, they also lost their third group game to crash out at this stage. Fellow future red Javier Mascherano featured for Argentina in the same tournament as they beat Oman 3-0 as they went on to top the same group. Digger in charge 2008 – John Barnes was named as Manager of Jamaica. He took over that November, moving on in June 2009 to take charge of Tranmere Rovers. Other reds games 2000 – Steven Gerrard netted as we drew 1-1 at West Ham United, with Paolo Di Canio scooring for the home side. 1955 – We lost a Second Division fixture 3-1 at Leicester City, with Billy Liddell on the scoresheet. 1949 – We won 3-2 at Birmingham City. Billy Liddell struck twice after Cyril Done had opened the scoring. 1947 – We lost 2-0 at Charlton Athletic. 1921 – Harry Chambers struck as Sheffield United held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield, with Fred Tunstall nabbing the first of his eight goals against the reds. On the move again 1999 - Ex-loanee Mark Prudhoe joined Darlington on loan from Bradford City, ten years after he had first joined the Quakers. However, he did not make a senior appearance this time around. 2010 - Péter Gulácsi rejoined Tranmere Rovers on loan, playing fourteen times in this second spell. 2020 – Aussie left-back Brad Smith signed for Seattle Sounders, having been on loan since August 2018. 22021 – Scouse keeper Oscar Kelly signed pro terms with the reds, having been at the Academy since Under-9’s level. Future reds in international action 1978 – Gary Gillespie played for Scotland Under-21’s as they beat a senior USA side 3-1 in a friendly at Pittodrie. 2006 – Astrit Ajdarević appeared for Sweden Under-17’s in their 2-0 European Championships qualifying win in Greece. 2010 – Emre Can represented Germany Under-17’s as they beat Israel 2-0 in a friendly in Villingen-Schwenningen. -
Club record signing 2018 – Dutch centre-half Virgil van Dijk signed from Southampton for a club record £75m. He struck nineteen times in 222 reds games across his first six seasons, helping us to keep 96 clean sheets while claiming the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield. On the same day, Estonian centre-half Ragnar Klavan headed in his second and last goal for the club to secure a last-minute 2-1 victory at Burnley. Sadio Mané opened the scoring after an hour before Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson equalised late on. 2020 – Japanese forward Takumi Minamino signed from Red Bull Salzburg for £7.25m. He went on to score fourteen goals in 55 outings, helping us to claim the Premier League title before moving on to AS Monaco for an initial €15m in June 2022. RIP Gary 2012 - Gary Ablett died, aged just 46. He signed on at Anfield as a professional in November 1983, going on to make 147 reds appearances, scoring just once – in only his second game. He helped us to two League titles, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before being sold to Everton by Graeme Souness for £750,000 in January 1992, with whom he won a second FA Cup. He returned to the club in the summer of 2006 to take over as Reserve Team Manager, leading them to the national title in his second season, although he left at the end of the following campaign. 1992 - Ablett played his 147th and final reds game as goals from Ray Houghton and Dean Saunders resulted in a 2-1 League defeat of Sheffield United at Anfield, after Brian Deane had struck one of his eight goals against the reds. 1977 – Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson died. He struck twice in 224 games for the reds after signing from Aberdeen for £1,750 in May 1925, appearing in every outfield position, and was renowned for his on-field arguments with notoriously foul-mouthed keeper Elisha Scott! He became reds skipper in 1928, also writing a regular column for the Liverpool Weekly Post before leaving the reds in 1933 to become ordained as a Presbyterian minister. 1917 – Scottish ex-reds keeper Don Sloan died in First World War action. He signed from Everton for £300 in May 1908, failing to keep a clean sheet in six reds games before becoming Player/Manager of his old club Distillery in Belfast in July 1909. Rushie’s hat-trick 1983 - Ian Rush bagged a treble as we beat Notts County 5-1 at Anfield, with his second being his fiftieth reds strike. Kenny Dalglish netted a brace as Phil Neal missed a penalty. John Fashanu struck the first of his six goals past us. 1994 - Rushie was on target as we won 2-1 at Ipswich Town, completing his record of scoring for us in each of the six New Year’s Day matches in which he played. Neil Ruddock nabbed the other goal to complete our first away League win since August. Happy birthdays 1993 - Right-back Jon Flanagan was born in Liverpool. He struck once in 51 senior reds games since making his debut in a 3-0 home victory over Manchester City in April 2011. He joined Rangers in June 2018 after being released by the reds earlier that month. 1955 – Chief Executive Officer Peter Moore was born in Liverpool, taking on the role in June 2017, moving on in August 2020. 2001 – Left-back Yasser Larouci was born in El Oued in Algeria. He arrived from Le Havre in July 2017 as a winger, playing two senior reds games before joining Troyes in July 2021. On the same day, midfielder Elijah Dixon-Bonner was born in Harlow. He debuted in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay against Shrewsbury Town in February 2020, so far making just two senior appearances. More red trebles galore 1909 - Joe Hewitt bagged a treble against his former club as we won 4-1 at Sunderland with Arthur Goddard also scoring. In white 1906 - We beat Stoke 3-1 at Anfield, having to start the match with just ten men as left-back Billy Dunlop arrived late. He was a senior coach with the FA for 20 years before becoming northern scout for West Ham United. He was initially in a part-time role for the reds before joining full time in 2007. 1881 – Welsh international half-back George Latham was born in Newtown. He joined the reds as an amateur in December 1902, signing on professionally the following year. He played nineteen reds games without scoring before joining Southport Central in 1909. Mølby foiled 1986 - Ian Rush ended a barren spell of eight games without a goal to draw us level at Sheffield Wednesday, before Martin Hodge saved a Jan Mølby spot-kick. A.P.S. Atromitos Athens after dramatically falling out of favour at Anfield. 2013 – Ex-reserves forward Jon Newby was sacked as Manager of Colwyn Bay, having been in charge since November 2011. 2014 - Djibril Cissé signed for Bastia, scoring twice in eleven outings during the rest of his first campaign in Corsica. 2015 – Forward Jack Dunn, centre-half Lloyd Jones and midfielder Kevin Stewart all joined Cheltenham Town on loan, making a total of fifteen appearances between them. Red farewells 2008 - Club Secretary Sheila Walsh died of cancer. Those who paid tribute to her included boss Rafael Benítez, who said, “Sheila worked as a Secretary to seven different managers at Liverpool Football Club during her 26 years with us. I was privileged to work with her during these last four years. During my time as the manager here I found Sheila to be professional, committed, warm, friendly and above all courageous in the face of her suffering.” 2023 – Scottish forward Frank McGarvey died from cancer. He arrived from Celtic for £300,000 in May 1979 after bagging 113 goals in 245 League games for the Hoops. However, he never broke into the first team at Anfield, moving back to Celtic for £270,000 in March 1980, becoming Scotland’s most expensive footballer. 1901 – Romany right-half Rab Howell played his 67th and last reds game in our 3-1 home victory over Stoke. Bowing out 1986 - Kenny Dalglish won his 102nd and final Scotland cap as they beat Luxembourg 3-0 in a Euro ’88 qualifier at Hampden Park. Alan Hansen won his 25th cap in the same game, while Jan Mølby and future reds Peter Beardsley and Mark Wright also played in qualifiers that day. 1932 – Scottish outside-right Danny McRorie played his 35th and final reds game in our 2-2 draw at Blackburn Rovers. Striking against their old club 2000 - Gary McAllister opened the scoring with his first reds goal, against his former club, as we beat Coventry City 4-1 at Anfield, added to by an Emile Heskey brace and a Steven Gerrard strike. Facing Spurs 2008 – We lost 4-2 at holders Tottenham Hotspur in a Carling Cup Fourth Round tie following a fairly dismal defensive performance. Right-back Stephen Darby made his reds bow while Damien Plessis bagged his only goal for the club, with Sami Hyypiä also on target. Roman Pavlyuchenko and Fraizer Campbell each struck twice for the home side. 1983 - We were held to a 2-2 top-flight draw at White Hart Lane with Michael Robinson and Ian Rush on target. Beating PNE We have twice beaten Preston North End in First Division meetings at Anfield on this day in history. 1898 - Hugh Morgan netted twice as we won 3-1 with George Allan also on the scoresheet. 1910 - Ronald Orr, Jack Parkinson and Sam Bowyer were all on target as we won 3-0, Tom Watson’s 500th League game in charge of the reds. European defeat 1969 - We lost 1-0 in the first leg of our Fairs Cup Second Round tie to Portuguese side Vitória de Setúbal. We won the second leg 3-2, going out on the away goals rule. Knocked out 1974 - Our first League Cup encounter with Middlesbrough ended in a 1-0 defeat in the Fourth Round at Anfield, with Willie Maddren netting in injury time, shortly after Alec Lindsay had his penalty saved by keeper Jim Platt. This came after we had seen off basement side Brentford and Second Division Bristol City. In charge 2004 - John Toshack was appointed Manager of Wales for the second time. He led them to 21 victories in 53 games in charge, before leaving by mutual consent in September 2010. 2001 - Academy Chief Scout Dave Moss was appointed Manager of Macclesfield Town, his only time in the hot seat. He led them to 33 victories in his 102 games in charge, leading them to mid-table finishes in consecutive seasons in the basement division before being sacked in October 2003. He joined the reds in February 2006. First and last caps 2014 – Future red Roberto Firmino won his first senior cap for Brazil in their 4-0 win in Turkey, with Philippe Coutinho also in action. On the same day, Divock Origi netted for Belgium as they beat Iceland 3-1 in another friendly in Brussels, with Harry Wilson on target for Wales Under-19’s and Lloyd Jones winning his fourth and last England Under-20’s cap. Jordon Ibe, future reds Christian Benteke, Diogo Jota and Gini Wijnaldum, and ex-red Javier Mascherano also represented their countries that day. 2015 – Future red Dominic Solanke played for England Under-21’s for the first time as they were held to a goalless draw in their European Championships qualifier against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Sarajevo. 1986 - Jim Beglin won his fifteenth and final cap for the Republic of Ireland as they lost 1-0 in a friendly in Poland. Luis for his country 2005 - Luis García bagged a treble, his first goals for his country, with Fernando Morientes also on target as Spain thumped future red Martin Škrtel’s Slovakia 5-1 in a World Cup play-off in Madrid. His hat-trick consisted of a header, right-foot and left-foot strikes. The other Spanish goal came from future red Fernando Torres who was on target in his third consecutive international. Ex-red Michael Owen grabbed a brace in England’s 3-2 friendly defeat of Argentina in Geneva, with Peter Crouch changing the game as a substitute, Paul Konchesky winning his second and final cap and only one as a West Ham United player, and Steven Gerrard and future reds Joe Cole and Maxi Rodríguez also featuring.
