Uncle Joe emerges 1921 - Joe Fagan was born in Walton Hospital, Liverpool. He joined the Anfield coaching staff in 1958, becoming Assistant Manager to Bob Paisley in 1974, before moving into the hot seat himself nine years later. In his first season as boss, he led the club to a unique treble of League, European Cup and League Cup, retiring just a year later after 71 victories in 131 games in all competitions. Another legend signs on 1936 – Right-half Matt Busby signed from Manchester City for £8,000. He played 122 reds games, many as captain, notching three times as well as netting o

A Real thumping 2009 - We thrashed Real Madrid 4-0 at Anfield to reach the Quarter-finals of the Champions League 5-0 on aggregate. Steven Gerrard played his hundredth game in Europe, while Xabi Alonso was making his 200th reds appearance. Fernando Torres opened the scoring before Gerrard converted a penalty prior to the break. The skipper added his second before the night was rounded off by Andrea Dossena bagging the first of his two, equally memorable reds strikes. Pepe Reina played his fiftieth game in Europe for the club. In comes Emile 2000 - Emile Heskey joined the reds from Lei

Cup final glory 1984 - Joe Fagan won his first trophy as reds boss as a Graeme Souness strike handed us the Milk Cup in a replay at Maine Road against Everton. 1902 - We also faced Everton with our friendly at Goodison ending goalless. He went on to make a record 857 reds appearances, netting 68 times as he helped us to five League titles, two FA Cups, one European Cup, two UEFA Cups, UEFA Super Cup and three FA Charity Shields. 1898 – Half-back Barney Battles re-signed from Dundee for £20, but only played once before j

Robbie’s last strikes 2007 - Robbie Fowler bagged his last two reds goals, converting two first-half penalties in front of the Kop in our 4-0 thumping of Sheffield United at Anfield to take his reds tally to 183 in total. Javier Mascherano made his debut, while we reached a new club record of nine consecutive clean sheets at Anfield in the League. Sami Hyypiä and Steven Gerrard added goals in the second half, while Peter Crouch suffered a broken nose after being kicked in the face. 1923 - We also entertained the Blades, with Harry Chambers grabbing our goal as we lost an FA Cup Third Round

Dirk strikes again 2010 - Dirk Kuyt headed in his fiftieth reds goal from a corner, in his 181st game for the club, to secure a 1-0 derby victory at Anfield. Centre-half Sotirios Kyrgiakos was sent off for a two-footed challenge on Marouane Fellaini, despite taking the ball, with both Fellaini and Stephen Pienaar lucky to avoid red cards in the first half. Pienaar was eventually dismissed in stoppage time. American issues 2007 - Liverpool FC announced that the Board had agreed the terms of an offer from George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks to buy the club. African magic 2000 - A truly momentous day for Rigobert Song, who captained Cameroon to the African Cup of Nations, scoring the decisive penalty in the shoot-out in the Final against host nation Nigeria in Lagos after the game had ended 2-2 after extra-time. This was happening at the same time as we won at Highbury in the League for the final time, hanging on after Titi Camara’s strike to beat Arsenal 1-0. 2004 - Future red Momo Sissoko played for Mali as they lost their Third-place Play-off 2-1 to Nigeria in the same competition in Tunisia. Debutants 1963 - Full-back Chris Lawler made his reds bow in a 2-2 draw at home to West Bromwich Albion, with Roger Hunt adding to a Ronnie Moran penalty. This was our third consecutive 2-2 League draw. 1935 - Keeper Stanley Kane made his reds debut in our 2-1 derby win at Anfield. Gordon Hodgson netted both our goals, including one from the spot. Dixie Dean also converted a penalty, one of his nineteen derby strikes. 1909 - Forward Bill Hunter made his only senior appearance in our 2-0 top-flight defeat at Preston North End. A roasting for the Turks 2007 - We secured the record ever victory in the Champions League by any club when we trounced Beşiktaş JK 8-0 at Anfield, with the lead only 2-0 at half time. Yossi Benayoun bagged a hat-trick, with his first strike being our 500th in Europe. Peter Crouch and Ryan Babel netted twice each with Steven Gerrard also on target. Sami Hyypiä played his hundredth club European game, while Babel became our hundredth different scorer in continental competition. Le Boss taken ill 2001 - Gérard Houllier was admitted to Broadgreen Hospital with chest pains during our Anfield fixture with Leeds United. Thankfully he went on to make a full recovery. Future red Harry Kewell scored for the Yorkshire outfit, before Danny Murphy equalised, handing us our 600th Premiership point. The reds therefore became the third team, after Manchester United and Arsenal, to reach this milestone. First ever Merseyside derby 1894 - We played Everton for the first time in a senior game, unfortunately going down 3-0 at Goodison Park in our ninth ever game in the top fl

Semi-final joy and despair 2001 - We played in our 21st FA Cup Semi-final, beating Wycombe Wanderers 2-1 at Villa Park, with Emile Heskey and Robbie Fowler scoring after the underdogs had kept us out for nearly eighty minutes. 4-3 for the first time 1996 - We played out a real humdinger with Newcastle United at Anfield. Robbie Fowler put us ahead after two minutes, but we went in 2-1 down at half-time after one of Les Ferdinand’s six strikes past us and a David Ginola goal. Robbie Fowler levelled the scores with his 22nd strike in his last 21 outings, but Faustino Asprilla put the visitors ahead again two minutes later. Stan Collymore tied the match once more, and then grabbed a dramatic last-gasp winner right at the death, in a match later voted the best in the Premiership’s first decade. A new record captur

Macca got both our goals, with Alan Thompson grabbing a late consolation for the Trotters. Future red Jason McAteer was on the losing side that day, while John Barnes was playing his 300th reds game. 2005 - We defeated Bolton again, with Igor Bišcan heading the only goal of the game at Anfield late on from a Djimi Traoré cross, his third and final reds goal. 1926 - We also beat Wander

Welcome to Brucie 1981 - Bruce Grobbelaar signed for £250,000 from Vancouver Whitecaps. Our eccentric keeper played 628 times for the reds, helping us to six League titles, one European Cup, three FA Cups, three League Cups, three FA Charity Shields and Screen Sport Super Cup. Four for Mo 2018 – Mohamed Salah struck four times as we thumped Watford 5-0 at Anfield, which included his first hat-trick for the club. Roberto Firmino was also on target. Didi’s belter 2004 - Dietmar Hamann’s goal at home to Portsmouth was later voted as Match Of The Day’s Goal of the Season. Michael O
