Reds on the way out 1992 - Dean Saunders was sold to Aston Villa for £2.3m, just a year and 25 goals in 61 games after arriving from Derby County for a British record £2.9m fee in July 1991. 1986 - Gary Ablett joined Hull City on loan. Transfer deadline day drama 2011 – We broke our record transfer twice in the same day, first when Luis Suárez arrived from Ajax for a fee of £22.8m. We then signed Andy Carroll for a British record £35m, with Fernando Torres then joining Chelsea for £50m, another British record. On the same day, left-back Paul Konchesky joined Nottingham Forest on loan while young midfielder Conor Thomas arrived from Coventry City on a temporary basis, although the move was not made permanent. Meanwhile, El-Hadji Diouf joined Rangers on loan from Blackburn Rovers and Daniel Sturridge joined Bolton Wande

Another Rushie treble 1984 - Ian Rush scored a hat-trick past the young Nigel Spink on a frozen Villa Park pitch, as we came from behind to win 3-1 in a live Friday night BBC game, in front of 19,566 hardy fans. Scouser Dennis Mortimer struck the Villains’ consolation. 1934 - We also visited Villa Park, when right-back Bob Done bagged his thirteenth and final reds goal with Syd Roberts also on target as we lost 3-2. Tom Waring struck two of his six goals against the reds, with Ronnie Dix nabbing the first of his four past us. Birth and death 1994 - Former reds right-half Sir Matt Bu

The start of another treble 2001 - We won the Worthington Cup in the first domestic final to be played outside England, at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium. We beat Birmingham City 5-4 on penalties after the match had ended 1-1 to secure Gérard Houllier's first trophy. Who could forget witnessing Jamie Carragher striding forward to bury our fifth spot-kick, before Sander Westerveld saved the decisive penalty from future Blue Andrew Johnson? Robbie Fowler had opened the scoring, before a late Darren Purse penalty took the game into extra time. On the same day, future red Ragnar Klavan played for

Red hat-tricks 1966 - Roger Hunt netted three times in just nineteen minutes in the second half of our League game at home to Sunderland. He actually scored all the goals in our 4-0 victory that day. 1947 - Cyril Done grabbed his second hat-trick of the season, with Willie Fagan scoring the other two, as we jumped from seventh in the table to second with a 5-0 home win over Grimsby Town in snowy conditions. Wing-half Stan Palk made the first of his thirteen senior reds appearances in this game. 1944 - Done struck another treble as we trounced Crewe Alexandra 8-0 in a Wartime League match

Double debutants 1987 - John Barnes and new record signing Peter Beardsley both made their official reds debuts as we beat Arsenal 2-1 at Highbury, thanks to goals from John Aldridge and Steve Nicol, who scored an extraordinary header from the edge of the penalty box. This was Kenny Dalglish’s fiftieth League win as reds boss, coming in his 85th game - still the best record of any reds boss. Happy birthday Ox 1993 – Midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was born in Portsmouth. He signed from Arsenal for £35m in August 2017, netting thirteen times in 87 appearances as well as suffering a

Title number five 1947 - We clinched our fifth League title when Stoke City lost 2-1 at Sheffield United. We therefore finished one point ahead of Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers, and two ahead of the Potters. The news came through on the day that we clinched the Liverpool Senior Cup by beating Everton 2-1, thanks to goals from Jack Balmer and William Watkinson. The match was actually halted five minutes from time so that director George Richards could address the crowd by loudspeaker with the news.
