Another Rushie treble 1984 - Ian Rush scored a hat-trick past the young Nigel Spink on a frozen Villa Park pitch, as we came from behind to win 3-1 in a live Friday night BBC game, in front of 19,566 hardy fans. Scouser Dennis Mortimer struck the Villains’ consolation. 1934 - We also visited Villa Park, when right-back Bob Done bagged his thirteenth and final reds goal with Syd Roberts also on target as we lost 3-2. Tom Waring struck two of his six goals against the reds, with Ronnie Dix nabbing the first of his four past us. Birth and death 1994 - Former reds right-half Sir Matt Busby died. He, of course, went on to far greater fame down the East Lancs Road, but in his time at Anfield he captained the reds, and struck three times in 122 first-team appearances before the Second World War, as well as another goal in 26 wartime outings. 1869 – Scottish left-back Duncan McLean was born in Renton. He made his reds bow in our very first game having remained when Everton departed Anfield. He bagged four goals in 82 games, helping us to the Second Division title before returning north of the border to join Edinburgh St. Bernard’s in October 1895, with whom he won two full international caps. Champions defeated 2007 - We beat Chelsea convincingly, 2-0, thanks to an early Dirk Kuyt strike and Jermaine Pennant’s first reds goal. This secured Rafael Benítez’s 56th win in his hundredth League game in charge, so equalling Bill Shankly’s record. This was also Jose Mourinho’s hundredth League match as Chelsea boss. Later that day, celebrated reds fan Dr. Fun, whose real name was Lenny Campbell, sadly died in hospital aged 63, following a bout of cancer. 2015 – We were held to a 1-1 draw by the Blues in the first leg of our League Cup Semi-final at Anfield. Eden Hazard opened the scoring from the spot, one of his seven goals past us to date, with Raheem Sterling netting a second-half equaliser. A great start from Sam 1900 - Sam Raybould scored after thirty seconds, but we were eventually beaten 3-1 in the Goodison derby, as the Blues completed a League double. This was his first reds goal, while Jimmy Settle netted two of his eleven goals against the reds as Joe Blythe also scored. Red centurions 2010 – Lucas Leiva played his hundredth reds game as we beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at Anfield, with a fans’ guard of honour greeting the team coach on its way into Anfield. Dirk Kuyt scored a twice-taken penalty in the final minute, having opened the scoring early on. 1962 – Roger Hunt reached a century of games for the club in our 1-1 Second Division draw at Sc***horpe United, when Ian St. John netted our goal. Youngest in the cup 2016 - Sheyi Ojo became our youngest ever FA Cup goalscorer in our 3-0 Third Round replay win at Exeter City, aged 18 years and 215 days, with both he and midfielder João Teixeira bagging their only reds goals. Left-back José Enrique skippered the side for the only time while playing centre-half, with Joe Allen having opened the scoring. Two-ton Andy 2022 – Andy Robertson played his 200th game for the reds as we won the second leg of our League Cup Semi-final 2-0 at Arsenal to reach the Final thanks to a Diogo Jota brace. Right-back Neco Williams featured for the 33rd and last time, with Thomas Partey sent off for the home side in the final minute. Marching on together 1996 - Gary Kelly was sent off for Leeds United for bringing down Rob Jones in the area with the score 1-0 at Anfield. Robbie Fowler converted the resulting spot-kick, the first penalty we had been awarded in 41 matches. We eventually romped home 5-0, our equal record victory over the Whites. Robbie Fowler scored a second with Neil Ruddock also bagging a brace and Stan Collymore also on target. Failure at last 1973 - John Toshack struck as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Derby County at Anfield, after Roger Davies had bagged the first of his five goals against the reds. This ended a run of 21 consecutive home League wins, still a top-flight record. This was Tosh’s final goal of the season in all competitions, although he still finished as our joint top scorer in the League with thirteen strikes. Steve Heighway played his hundredth League game for the reds. More derby despair We have lost both the Anfield derbies played on this day in history. 1912 - Sam Gilligan struck as we went down 3-1. Tommy Browell scored the first of his seven goals past us, with Frank Jefferies and George Beare also on target. 1951 - We were beaten 2-0 as Jimmy McIntosh bagged his only two derby goals, although he had previously scored for times past us with Blackpool. Forward Don Woan played his second and final reds game. Michael on target 1998 - Michael Owen struck the only goal of the game as we beat Newcastle United at Anfield in game that was postponed from the previous August, following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. Signing on 1909 – Full-back Bob Crawford signed from Arthurlie. He played 115 times for the reds, netting once in a career badly interrupted by injury. 1926 – Outside-right Dick Edmed signed from Gillingham for £1,800. He scored 46 times in 170 reds games before joining Bolton Wanderers in May 1932. He died on his eightieth birthday. 2006 - John Arne Riise signed a new contract to tie him to the club until 2009. He made 348 first-team appearances in total, notching 31 times. In his time with the club, he helped us to claim the European Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and two FA Charity Shields before moving to Roma for £4m in June 2008. A new breeding ground 1999 - The new Academy was officially opened in Kirkby, seven miles from Anfield. On the same day, future red Nicolas Anelka played for France as they beat Morocco 1-0 in a friendly in Marseille. Stevie honoured 2013 - Steven Gerrard was presented with the Football Writers’ Association Tribute Award at the Savoy Hotel in London. He followed Bob Paisley in 1984 and Kenny Dalglish in 1987 as the club’s only winners of this trophy. Raw Venison 1982 - Barry Venison signed as a professional for Sunderland. He played more than two hundred games for the Wearsiders, including the 1985 Milk Cup Final, before moving to Anfield for £200,000 in July 1986. All wrong for Wright 1990 – Crystal Palace’s Ian Wright broke his leg as we won 2-0 at Selhurst Park. Ian Rush and Peter Beardsley both netted as we completed a League double over the Eagles after our 9-0 triumph the previous September. In African action 2022 – Ex-reds loanee Steven Caulker played for Sierra Leone as they lost 1-0 to Equatorial Guinea in an Africa Cup of Nations group game in Cameroon. 2015 – Kolo Touré played as Ivory Coast drew 1-1 with future red Naby Keïta’s Guinea in group game in Equatorial Guinea. Future red Ibrahima Konaté played for France Under-16’s as they thumped the Czech Republic 6-0 in a tournament game. 2013 – Ex-red Momo Sissoko featured in another group game as Mali beat Niger 1-0 in South Africa. 2002 – Ex-red Rigobert Song captained Cameroon in their 1-0 defeat of DR Congo in Mali. On the same day, future reds Salif Diao and El-Hadji Diouf both played in Senegal’s 1-0 defeat of Egypt in another group game. 2001 – Future red Touré appeared in a qualifier as Ivory Coast beat Sudan 2-0 in Bouaké. Other reds games 2001 – Middlesbrough held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. 1968 – Geoff Strong and Ron Yeats both scored with their head as we beat Southampton 2-0 in L4. 1923 – We beat Boro 2-0 at Ayresome Park, with Harry Chambers and Dick Johnson on the scoresheet. 1906 – We defeated Sunderland 2-0 in a First Division match at Anfield, thanks to goals from Joe Hewitt and John Carlin, in a game that also acted as a benefit game for right-half Maurice Parry. Also on the move 2023 – Young defender Jarell Quansah joined Bristol Rovers on loan, making sixteen senior appearances while with the Pirates. On the same day, Danny Ings joined West Ham United from Aston Villa for an initial £12m, having struck fourteen times in 52 outings since arriving from Southampton for a £25m fee in August 2021. 2017 – Forward Michael Ngoo joined Oldham Athletic from Bromley on a free transfer. 2014 – Young Portuguese centre-half Tiago Ilori joined Granada in Spain on loan, playing nine games there. 2011 – Ex-reserves winger Adam Hammill joined Wolverhampton Wanderers from Barnsley for £500,000. He scored once in 27 games before moving to Huddersfield Town in June 2013 after a successful loan spell there. 2005 - Sotirios Kyrgiakos joined Rangers from Panathinaikos for £1.75m. He struck five times in 57 outings while in Scotland, helping them to claim the League title and League Cup, bagging a brace in their Final defeat of Motherwell later that year. He was released in May 2006. 1995 - Steve Nicol joined Notts County as a Player/Coach on a free transfer. He made 37 appearances for the Magpies before moving on to Sheffield Wednesday after County were relegated. 1998 - Ex-reserves defender Barry Jones joined York City from Wrexham for £40,000. He made 134 League appearances before joining Southport in 2001. Also in international action 2000 – Future red Alberto Aquilani played for Italy Under-15’s in their 3-1 defeat by Japan. 2009 – Ronald Huth featured for Paraguay in the Sudamericano Sub-20 "Juventud de América" as they drew 1-1 with Brazil in Venezuela. 2017 – Midfielder Allan played in the South American Championships for Brazil Under-20’s as they drew 0-0 with Chile in Ecuador. 2018 – Rigobert Song took charge of Cameroon as they lost an African Nations Championship group game 1-0 to Angola in Morocco. 2019 – Future red Darwin Núñez featured as Uruguay Under-20’s beat Ecuador 3-1 in the South American Championships in Chile. -
Milan on target again 2004 - Milan Baroš scored in his sixth consecutive international, grabbing a brace as the Czech Republic beat future red Christian Poulsen’s Denmark 3-0 in the Quarter-final of the European Championships in Porto. KHR on target 1994 - Future red Karl-Heinz Riedle bagged his final international goal while winning his 41st cap in Germany’s 3-2 World Cup defeat of South Korea in Dallas, to finish top of their group. Also at the World Cup 2010 – Future red Joe Cole won his 56th and final cap as England lost 4-1 to Germany in the Round of Sixteen in Bloemfontein with ex-red David James playing for the 53rd and last time. Steven Gerrard, Glen Johnson, future red James Milner and ex-red Emile Heskey all also featured, while Javier Mascherano and Maxi Rodríguez both played in Argentina’s 3-1 defeat of Mexico at the same stage in Johannesburg. 2018 – Future reds Alisson Becker and Xherdan Shaqiri and ex-red Philippe Coutinho all featured in group games in Russia as both sides progressed from the same group. 2006 - Xabi Alonso, Luis García and future red Fernando Torres all featured as Spain lost 3-1 to France in the Second Round of the World Cup Finals in Hanover. 1990 - John Barnes, Steve McMahon and future red Mark Wright all played as England beat Belgium 1-0 in Bologna to reach the Quarter-finals. 1998 - Stig Inge Bjørnebye and Øyvind Leonhardsen both featured in Norway’s 1-0 defeat by Italy in Marseille in the Second Round. Hamberg for the youngsters 2007 - It was announced that Piet Hamberg would take over as Academy Technical Manager in July. The former Ajax player joined from Grasshoppers of Zurich. Rafael Benítez said, “We have had some very good reports about Piet and he will bring great experience to the new role.” However, he left this role after just two years. 2019 – Centre-half Sepp van den Berg joined the reds from PEC Zwolle for an initial £1.3m, so far making four senior appearances. Heading West 1944 - Right-back Alf West died. He struck six times in 141 reds games across two spells at Anfield prior to the First World War, first arriving from Barnsley St. Peter’s in November 1903 for £500. He helped us to the Second Division championship in 1905 and our second League title a year later, joining Reading in June 1909, becoming their club captain but he only stayed for a season before returning to Anfield in May 1910. He only played five times in this second spell before joining Notts County in July 1911. Redders starts out 1990 - Jamie Redknapp signed as a professional for Bournemouth, two days after his seventeenth birthday. He only made 21 senior appearances for the Cherries before becoming Kenny Dalglish’s last signing as reds boss for £350,000 in January 1991. Ins and outs 1999 - It was announced that Sammy Lee was considering quitting Anfield to become Assistant Manager to new Sheffield United boss Adrian Heath. Fortunately, the move fell through, and Sammy remained at Anfield for another five years. It was also revealed that Paul Ince was available for transfer for a fee of £1m. He moved on to Middlesbrough a month later. Meanwhile, the Department of Employment granted work permits for Vladimír Šmicer and Stéphane Henchoz, ahead of their official signings. 2014 – Sammy was announced as Assistant Manager of Brighton & Hove Albion, to be working under Sami Hyypiä. However, he changed his mind, joining Southampton just two days later. Dioufy in the top ten 2002 – El-Hadji Diouf was named as one of ten candidates for the Adidas Golden Ball Trophy, awarded to the most valuable player at the World Cup. The nominees were selected by the Technical Study Group of FIFA, with the top three to be selected by representatives of the media. One of the voters, ex-French boss Aimé Jacquet, said, “His position in the ten nominees is a symbol of this World Cup. I am very impressed by him. He played in France last season and was very good.” Management moves 1997 - Nigel Spackman was appointed Manager of Sheffield United. He was in charge for just eight months before he resigned over the sale of their top players as they headed towards the First Division play-offs. 1999 - Roy Hodgson resigned as Manager of Internazionale, after just three unbeaten matches of his second spell in charge at the San Siro. 2016 – Hodgson took charge of his last game with England as they lost 2-1 to Iceland in a European Championships Round of 16 tie in Nice. Final cap 2021 - Gini Wijnaldum won his last cap as a reds player as the Netherlands lost 2-0 to the Czech Republic in their Round of 16 tie in the European Championships in Budapest. On the same day, Alisson Becker, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino all played as Brazil drew 1-1 with Ecuador in a Copa América group game in Goiânia, while Diogo Jota featured as Portugal lost 1-0 to Belgium as they crashed out of the European Championship Finals in Seville. On the same day, Emre Can won his thirteenth and last cap for Germany Under-21’s as they lost 5-0 to Portugal in their European Championships Semi-Final in the Czech Republic. 2019 - Ex-red Philippe Coutinho scored and Roberto Firmino missed in a shoot-out, with Alisson Becker saving a penalty as Brazil beat Paraguay 4-3 after their goalless Copa América Quarter-final in Porto Alegre. Sadio Mané played for Senegal in their 1-0 Africa Cup of Nations Finals group defeat to Algeria in Cairo on the same day, with future red Ibrahima Konaté playing for France Under-21’s in their 4-1 thumping by Spain in the European Championships Semi-final in Italy. Moving on again 2016 – Keeper Chris Kirkland signed for Bury, although he left the club for personal reasons before the start of the season. Ex-reds reserves on the move 2001 - Ex-reserves midfielder Danny Williams joined Jan Mølby’s Kidderminster Harriers from Wrexham on a free transfer. He played 126 times for the Harriers in the next three seasons. 2004 - Forward Jon Newby rejoined Bury on a free transfer from Huddersfield Town, after failing to score in his fifteen games for the Terriers. He bagged just five goals in 51 games in this spell at Gigg Lane. 2013 – Defender Gareth Roberts signed for Bury, having been released by Derby County. He was made club captain but only played thirteen times before being released the following January. 2014 – American centre-half Zak Whitbread joined Derby County from Leicester City on a free transfer, after a successful loan spell at Pride Park. He struck once in fifteen outings in total for the Rams before joining Shrewsbury Town on a free in October 2015. 2022 – Midfielder João Teixeira signed for Umm Salal in the Qatar Stars League, scoring five times in 22 appearances in his one season. Meanwhile, keeper Dean Bouzanis joined Reading, playing eight senior games in his first campaign with the Royals. Title number five 1947 - We clinched our fifth League title when Stoke City lost 2-1 at Sheffield United. We therefore finished one point ahead of Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers, and two ahead of the Potters. The news came through on the day that we clinched the Liverpool Senior Cup by beating Everton 2-1, thanks to goals from Jack Balmer and William Watkinson. The match was actually halted five minutes from time so that director George Richards could address the crowd by loudspeaker with the news. RIP Gordon Hodgson 1951 - Legendary forward Gordon Hodgson died of cancer in Burslem. He had bagged a club record seventeen hat-tricks amongst his 241 goals in 377 games after signing from Transvaal in November 1925. He could not claim a club medal in his time at Anfield, moving on to Aston Villa in January 1936 for £3,000. In comes Darwin 2022 - Darwin Núñez signed from SL Benfica for an initial £64.2m. He was on target as he came off the bench to help us claim the FA Community Shield on his debut, bagging a total of fifteen goals in 42 outings in his first campaign. Happy birthdays 1857 – The club’s first Manager, William Barclay, was born in the Kilmainham Auxiliary of the South Dublin Workhouse. He worked as a Secretary-c**-Manager for the first four years of the club’s existence, having previously been Vice Chairman of Everton. 1878 – Outside-right Arthur Goddard was born in Heaton Norris, Stockport. He signed from Glossop for £460 in February 1902 and grabbed 77 goals in 414 reds games, helping us to Second Division and League championships. He was nominated into the club’s official Hall Of Fame, for the 1910-20 era. Scott’s record 2007 - Scott Carson equalled the record number of England Under-21’s caps by claiming his 27th, to move level with both Jamie Carragher and Gareth Barry. England were held to a 2-2 draw by Italy in a European Championships Finals group game in the Netherlands, with future red Alberto Aquilani on target and Newcastle United’s James Milner also in action. Carson went on to win 29 caps at this level in total, although the record is now Milner’s on 46. More Spaniards on target 2006 - Xabi Alonso grabbed his first senior international goal while winning his 27th cap in Spain’s 4-0 thumping of the Ukraine in a World Cup Finals group game in Leipzig, with future red Fernando Torres also on the scoresheet. Luis García and future red Andriy Voronin also featured. 2008 – Torres netted again as Spain beat Sweden 2-1 in Innsbruck, with David Villa’s late winner ensuring they reached the Quarter-finals of the European Championships as group winners with a game to spare. Meanwhile, future red Sotirios Kyrgiakos played as Greece lost 1-0 to Russia in Salzburg. 2012 – Ex-red Torres bagged a brace as Spain thumped the Republic of Ireland 4-0 in a Euro 2012 group game in Gdansk. Ex-reds Xabi Alonso, Álvaro Arbeloa and Robbie Keane all also featured, with future red Mario Balotelli also playing that day. These results ensured that neither Portugal nor Poland qualified for the knock-out stages. 1974 – Future red Kenny Dalglish played his first game at the World Cup Finals as Scotland beat Zaire 2-0 in the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund. Czech mates at Anfield 1996 - The Czech Republic beat Italy 2-1 in a Euro ‘96 group match at Anfield, with Pavel Nedvěd bagging his first senior international goal. Patrik Berger started the game, later being replaced by Vladimír Šmicer. It was the first time either of them had played in L4. Mohamed Salah won his last cap while on loan at Fiorentina, netting his only goal while with La Viola, as Egypt beat Tanzania 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Alexandria. Marko Grujić played for Serbia Under-20’s for the seventh and last time, scoring in a penalty shoot-out as they beat the USA to reach the Semi-final of the World Championships Finals in New Zealand. Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana, Martin Škrtel and future reds Roberto Firmino, Ragnar Klavan and Kostas Tsimikas also represented their countries that day. 2022 - Takumi Minamino won his last cap before leaving Anfield as Japan lost 3-0 to Tunisia in the Kirin Cup Soccer Final in Suita. Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling appeared for England for the final time while with Manchester City in their 4-0 thumping by Hungary in a UEFA Nations League group game at Molineux, with ex-red Ozan Kabak representing Türkiye for the last time as a Schalke 04 player in their 2-0 defeat of Lithuania in the same competition in Izmir. Future red Cody Gakpo netted as the Netherlands beat Wales 3-2 in Rotterdam, with Owen Beck, Caoimhín Kelleher, future reds Wataru Endō and Dominik Szoboszlai, and ex-reds Simon Mignolet and Harry Wilson all playing for their countries, as Steve Clarke took charge of Scotland. Moving on 2013 – Centre-half Dejan Lovren joined Southampton from Olympique Lyonnais for £8.5m after three goals in 102 games since signing from Dinamo Zagreb in January 2010 for an initial €8m. 2007 – Reserves centre-half Danny O’Donnell left Anfield to join Crewe Alexandra for a nominal fee after a successful season-long loan. He had moved up to Melwood from the Academy full-time in the summer of 2005, having skippered the Under-18’s during 2004/05. 1928 – Scottish right-half Jock McNab left the reds to join Queens Park Rangers. He had signed from Bellshill Athletic in November 1919 and helped us to two League titles in the 1920’s, netting six times in 222 reds games. Transfer deadline day drama 2011 – We broke our record transfer twice in the same day, first when Luis Suárez arrived from Ajax for a fee of £22.8m. We then signed Andy Carroll for a British record £35m, with Fernando Torres then joining Chelsea for £50m, another British record. On the same day, left-back Paul Konchesky joined Nottingham Forest on loan while young midfielder Conor Thomas arrived from Coventry City on a temporary basis, although the move was not made permanent. Happy birthday Quasi 1961 - Peter Beardsley was born in Newcastle. He arrived at Anfield from Newcastle United for a British record £1.9m fee in July 1987, winning two League titles, an FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields, scoring 59 times in 175 games. He was controversially sold by Graeme Souness to Everton for £1m in August 1991. 2002 – Dutch defender Ki-Jana Hoever was born in Amsterdam. He joined from Ajax in the summer of 2018, signing his first professional contract in July 2019. He scored once in four senior appearances before moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers for an initial £9m in September 2020. 1882 – Forward Sam Gilligan was born in Dundee. He signed from Bristol City in May 1910, having featured in the FA Cup Final for them the previous year. He netted sixteen goals in forty games, including the crucial strike at Oldham Athletic in April 1912 that kept us in the top flight, before joining Gillingham as Player/Manager in July 1913. 1993 – Portuguese midfielder João Teixeira was born in Braga. Roger Hunt struck what was erroneously believed at the time to be a club record 234th League goal for the reds, although it was in fact only his 233rd! Alun Evans headed in, with Bobby Tambling scoring the last of his eight goals against the reds. A win at last 2003 - We finally won a League game, after a run of eleven matches without tasting victory, with a superb performance at a rain-sodden Southampton. Emile Heskey’s first-half header was the highlight of a barnstorming performance. Most recently 2014 - We came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Aston Villa at Anfield. Andreas Weimann scored before future red Christian Benteke grabbed one of his seven goals against us to date, with Daniel Sturridge pulling a goal back in first-half stoppage time. Steven Gerrard levelled from the spot. Through on penalties 1995 - We finally saw off Birmingham City in the replay of our FA Cup Third Round tie. The game ended 1-1 after ninety minutes with Jamie Redknapp grabbing our goal, remaining that way through extra time as Ian Rush had a goal disallowed. We won the penalty shoot-out 2-0 with Stig Inge Bjørnebye netting the decisive spot-kick, and Jamie Redknapp also converting, as City missed all four of their kicks, while Neil Ruddock’s effort was saved. Red debutants 1997 - Bjørn Tore Kvarme made his reds bow in a 3-0 defeat of Aston Villa at Anfield, as Jamie Carragher headed the opener with his first ever senior goal on his first start. Stan Collymore and Robbie Fowler were also on the scoresheet. 1936 – Outside-right Billy Hartill debuted in our goalless top-flight fixture at Grimsby Town, with pat Glover missing a penalty for the home side. The sheriff departs 2005 - Salif Diao joined Birmingham City on loan. He only made two senior appearances in his time at St. Andrews, both defeats. First and last goals 2017 – Lucas Leiva headed his seventh and last reds goal as we won our FA Cup Third Round replay 1-0 at Plymouth Argyle. Winger Harry Wilson made his reds bow, while midfielder Kevin Stewart played his twentieth and last reds game, with Sheyi Ojo featuring for the thirteenth and final time. Divock Origi had a late penalty saved, but we hung on to win, falling to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield at the next hurdle. 1992 - Michael Thomas scored his first reds goal in a 3-2 win at Oldham Athletic. The former Arsenal midfielder grabbed the winning goal, after strikes from Steve McManaman and Dean Saunders. 1941 – We won a Wartime League game 3-0 at Boundary Park, thanks to goals from Bob Paisley, George Collister and John Search. An east end double 1964 - West Ham United completed the only League double over the reds that season, winning 1-0 at Upton Park thanks to a John Byrne strike. 1930 - We also lost 4-1 there with Jim Smith nabbing our consolation as centre-half David Davidson put through his own net while playing his 62nd and final reds game. Vic Watson struck one of his nine goals against the reds as Jim Barrett and George Robson also netted for the Irons. 1983 – We beat the Hammers 2-1 in a League Cup Fifth Round tie at Anfield, thanks to goals from David Hodgson and Graeme Souness. This was Bob Paisley’s fiftieth game in charge in this competition. 1986 – We won a League meeting 3-1 in L4, when Ian Rush reached a century of League goals for the reds. Paul Walsh also scored, with Jan Mølby converting a penalty. Four against 1913 - Fred Howard scored all four Manchester City goals on his debut as they beat us 4-1 at their old Hyde Road ground, the first of his nine goals past us. Inside-right Jimmy Stewart nabbed the 26th and last of his reds goals, with half-back Ralph Holden playing the first of just two senior games. For Arthur 1908 - Centre-half Jimmy Harrop made his reds bow as we beat Bolton Wanderers 1-0 in a First Division match at Anfield. Jack Parkinson struck in a match that was also a benefit game for winger Arthur Goddard. Forward Joe Hewitt reached a century of League appearances for the club in this game. 1947 - We lost 3-0 to Wanderers at Anfield with Nat Lofthouse scoring one of his eight goals against the reds, Willie Moir bagging the first of his five and Malcolm Barrass also on target. New deals 2012 – The club announced a deal with Warrior Sports Inc. to become its Official Kit Supplier, apparently worth £25m per season, with the deal lasting three years. 2016 – Keeper Simon Mignolet signed a new contract. He made 204 first-team appearances after signing from Sunderland for £9m in June 2013, moving on to Club Brugge for an initial reported £6.4m in August 2019. Youngsters on the move 2007 - Irish international midfielder Darren Potter was sold to Wolverhampton Wanderers after a successful 24-game loan spell. On the same day, winger Adam Hammill joined Dunfermline Athletic on loan, helping them to the Scottish Cup Final at the end of the season. Meanwhile, ex-reserves right-back Stephen Vaughan signed for Boston United on a free transfer from Chester City. 2008 - Second string forward Craig Lindfield moved to Chester City on loan, where he failed to score in seven outings. Meanwhile, Djimi Traoré joined Stade Rennais from Portsmouth on a temporary basis, playing fifteen League games for them. 2013 – Scottish centre-half Danny Wilson joined Heart Of Midlothian on loan, playing fifteen times before signing on permanently in the summer. In and out 1895 - Left-back Tom Wilkie signed from Heart Of Midlothian. He struck once in 64 games for the reds before joining Portsmouth in 1899. 1996 – Mark Walters joined Southampton on a free transfer. The most famous of his 124 games in a red shirt came when he inspired a UEFA Cup comeback against Auxerre in 1991. He also scored the crucial second goal in our defeat of Manchester United that handed the title to Leeds United earlier the following year, one of his nineteen reds strikes after signing from Rangers for £1.25m in August 1991. First and last caps 1913 - Ex-red George Latham won his tenth and final cap for Wales, his only one as a Cardiff City player. His former Anfield team-mate Ernest Peake also played for the Welsh as they beat Ireland 1-0 in the British International Championships in Belfast. Reds half-back Billy Lacey was winning his first cap as a reds player for the Irish and eleventh to date. 1995 – Future reds midfielder Jean-Michel Ferri won the last of his five senior caps for France as they beat the Netherlands 1-0 in a friendly in Utrecht. 2020 – Future red Alexis Mac Allister scored and was then sent off for a second bookable offence while making his debut for Argentina Under-23’s as they won an Olympics qualifier 2-1 in Colombia. Also on the move 2001 - Former reserves midfielder Danny Williams joined Conference side Doncaster Rovers from Wrexham on loan. He played six times in his one month at Belle Vue. 2008 – Ex-reds midfielder Bernard Diomède announced his retirement from playing having been without a club for eighteen months. He only made five first-team appearances after signing from Auxerre for £3m in June 2000. 2016 – The loaning of Brazilian midfielder Allan Rodrigues de Souza to Koninklijke Sint-Truidense Voetbalvereniging was announced. He played nine times for the Dutch side. 2017 – Centre-half Tiago Ilori was sold to Reading for a reported £3.75m after just three senior reds games since signing from Sporting Clube de Portugal for £7m in September 2013. For Africa 1996 – Future red Rigobert Song played for Cameroon in their 2-1 defeat of Egypt in an Africa Cup of Nations group game in Johannesburg. 2010 – Ex-red Momo Sissoko featured for Mali in their 3-1 defeat of Malawi in Angola. 2017 – Ex-red Toni Silva played for Guinea-Bissau as they lost 2-1 to Cameroon in Gabon. Other reds games 1975 – We beat Coventry City 2-1 at Anfield with Steve Heighway giving us a half-time lead. Kevin Keegan struck late on, but there was still enough time for Brian Alderson to bag a consolation. 1967 – We lost 2-1 at Leicester City with Mike Stringfellow opening the scoring with one of his five goals past us, before we levelled through a Peter Rodrigues own goal. Graham Cross struck the winner. 1958 – Middlesbrough won 2-0 in L4 with Brian Clough scoring one of his ten goals against the reds, and Ron Burbeck also on target. Double debutants 1987 - John Barnes and new record signing Peter Beardsley both made their official reds debuts as we beat Arsenal 2-1 at Highbury, thanks to goals from John Aldridge and Steve Nicol, who scored an extraordinary header from the edge of the penalty box. This was Kenny Dalglish’s fiftieth League win as reds boss, coming in his 85th game - still the best record of any reds boss. Ronnie Whelan played his 200th League game for the reds that day. Happy birthday Ox 1993 – Midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was born in Portsmouth. He signed from Arsenal for £35m in August 2017, netting eighteen times in 146 appearances before being released earlier this summer. He made it back from serious injury to sit on the bench as we claimed the UEFA Champions League in Madrid in June 2019 and helping us to claim the Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup. Clem departs 1981 – Ray Clemence was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £300,000. He had arrived from Sc***horpe United for £18,000 in June 1967, usurping Tommy Lawrence as first choice number one after two years. He went on to make 665 reds appearances, winning five League titles, an FA Cup, three European Cups, two UEFA Cups, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and four FA Charity Shields in his fourteen years at Anfield. Also moving on 1974 - Centre-half Larry Lloyd was sold to Coventry City for £240,000. He is one of a rare breed to leave Anfield in his prime and go on to better things – helping Nottingham Forest to two European Cups, one League title, League Cup and FA Charity Shield. He had won League and UEFA Cup medals after joining the reds from Bristol Rovers for £50,000 in April 1969, appearing 218 times and notching five times. 1976 – Kevin Keegan confirmed that the upcoming season would be his final one at Anfield. He struck twenty times in 57 outings in this campaign, helping us to claim the European Cup and League title, and reach the FA Cup Final. 1991 – David Speedie left the reds to join Blackburn Rovers. He had struck six times in fourteen outings since signing from Coventry City for £675,000 seven months earlier. Dismissals galore 2010 – Joe Cole was sent off for a challenge on Laurent Koscielny just before half-time in our Anfield meeting with Arsenal. David N’Gog put us in front immediately after the break, with the lead lasting until the last minute when Marouane Chamakh diverted a cross against the post and Pepe Reina spilled the rebound into his own net. Koscielny was then sent off for a second bookable offence in injury-time. This turned out to be Javier Mascherano’s 139th and final reds game. 2022 - Darwin Núñez was dismissed in our 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace at Anfield. Wilfred Zaha put the Eagles in front before the break, but the Uruguayan was sent off for headbutting Joachim Andersen. Luis Díaz bagged the equaliser, Other birthdays 1988 – Moroccan winger Oussama Assaidi was born in Beni-Boughafar. He signed from Dutch side SC Heerenveen for £2.4m in August 2012, failing to score in twelve appearances before spending a season and a half on loan at Stoke City. He was sold to UAE Arabian Gulf League side Al Ahli for a reported £4.7m in January 2015. 1905 - Centre-forward Tommy Reid was born in Motherwell. He signed from Clydebank for £1,000 in April 1926 and bagged an impressive thirty goals in 55 games before moving to Manchester United in February 1929. Off the mark 2017 – Trent Alexander-Arnold scored his first senior goal as we won 2-1 at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in the first leg of our UEFA Champions League qualifier. Simon Mignolet saved a penalty, with forward Dominic Solanke making his reds bow as we benefited when Havard Nordtveit inadvertently diverted a James Milner cross into his own net. 2007 - Yossi Benayoun made his reds debut as Andriy Voronin’s first reds strike proved to be the only goal of the first leg of our Champions League qualifier in Toulouse, who became our hundredth different opponents in European competition. Happy birthday Boudewijn 1976 - Bolo Zenden was born in Maastricht in the Netherlands. He signed on a free transfer in July 2005 after his one-year contract with Middlesbrough had expired. He notched twice in 47 senior reds games, as injury hampered his career at Anfield. He helped us to claim the UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield, as well as reach the Champions League Final in his brief time with the reds. Bolo left the club in July 2007 to join Olympique de Marseille. 2021 – Former Director Terry Smith died at Arrowe Park Hospital in Birkenhead. He was on the board from 1992 until 2007. Charity at first 1964 - We played in our first FA Charity Shield, only drawing 2-2 with West Ham United at Anfield. Gordon Wallace and Gerry Byrne twice gave us the lead, with John Byrne and Geoff Hurst both netting equalisers, with the latter being one of his nine strikes against the reds. The trophy was shared between the two clubs, as this was in the days before extra-time and penalty shoot-outs. Phil Chisnall made his reds bow in this game when he became the first ever substitute in senior English football, replacing Alf Arrowsmith after just a quarter of an hour, who had suffered a serious knee injury. Red defenders on the way out 1991 - Gary Gillespie was sold to his boyhood heroes Celtic for £925,000. He had been Joe Fagan’s first signing, helping us to three League titles in his eight injury-ravaged years at Anfield, scoring sixteen times in 214 appearances. 2002 - Young full-back Stephen Wright joined Sunderland for £3m, after just 21 reds games. He netted twice in 105 games for them, with injuries blighting his time there, and was released in May 2008. Double capture 2005 - Liverpool confirmed the signings of young centre-backs Godwin Antwi from Real Zaragoza and Miki Roqué from U.E. Lleida. Both featured in our victorious FA Youth Cup winning campaign in 2006, but only made one senior appearance between them, when Roque made a late cameo at Galatasaray in December 2006. 1996 - Patrik Berger signed from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund for £3.25m, following an impressive Euro ’96. He scored 35 times in 196 reds games, before joining Portsmouth in June 2003. 1983 – Winger Brian Mooney signed from Home Farm for £20,000. Losing finalists 1982 - We lost the Final of the Málaga Tournament to the home side. We drew 1-1 after extra time, with our goal coming from Alan Kennedy, but lost the penalty shoot-out 4-2. The game started so late that the action did not come to an end until around 1:15am. He narrowly failed to take them to the European Championships Finals in 2008, as they fell just one goal short of reaching their first ever major tournament. He chose not to renew his contract when it expired in November 2007, taking over at Fulham the following month. 2020 - Jürgen Klopp was named Premier League Manager of the Season for 2019-20, having led us as we romped to the Premier League title.
