Also at the World Cup 2010 – Future red Joe Cole won his 56th and final cap as England lost 4-1 to Germany in the Round of Sixteen in Bloemfontein with ex-red David James playing for the 53rd and last time. Hamberg for the youngsters 2007 - It was announced that Piet Hamberg would take over as Academy Technical Manager in July. The former Ajax player joined from Grasshoppers of Zurich. Heading West 1944 - Right-back Alf West died. He struck six times in 141 reds games across two spells at Anfield prior to the First World War, first arriving from Barnsley St. Peter’s in November 1903 for £500. He helped us to the Second Division championship in 1905 and our second League title a year later, joining Reading in June 1909, becoming their club captain but he only stayed for a season before returning to Anfield in May 1910. He only played five times in this second spell before joining Notts County in July 1911. Redders starts out 1990 - Jamie Redknapp signed as a professional for Bournemouth, two days after his seventeenth birthday. He only made 21 senior appearances for the Cherries before becoming Kenny Dalglish’s last signing as reds boss for £350,000 in January 1991. Ins and outs 1999 - It was announced that Sammy Lee was considering quitting Anfield to become Assistant Manager to new Sheffield United boss Adrian Heath. Fortunately, the move fell through, and Sammy remained at Anfield for another five years. It was also revealed that Paul Ince was available for transfer for a fee of £1m. He moved on to Middlesbrough a month later. Meanwhile, the Department of Employment granted work permits for Vladimír Šmicer and Stéphane Henchoz, ahead of their official signings. 2014 – Sammy was announced as Assistant Manager of Brighton & Hove Albion, to be working under Sami Hyypiä. However, he changed his mind, joining Southampton just two days later. Ex-reds reserves on the move 2001 - Ex-reserves midfielder Danny Williams joined Jan Mølby’s Kidderminster Harriers from Wrexham on a free transfer. He played 126 times for the Harriers in the next three seasons. 2004 - Forward Jon Newby rejoined Bury on a free transfer from Huddersfield Town, after failing to score in his fifteen games for the Terriers. He bagged just five goals in 51 games in this spell at Gigg Lane. 2013 – Defender Gareth Roberts signed for Bury, having been released by Derby County. He was made club captain but only played thirteen times before being released the following January. 2014 – American centre-half Zak Whitbread joined Derby County from Leicester City on a free transfer, after a successful loan spell at Pride Park. He struck once in fifteen outings in total for the Rams before joining Shrewsbury Town on a free in October 2015. 2022 – Midfielder João Teixeira signed for Umm Salal in the Qatar Stars League, scoring five times in 22 appearances in his one season. No longer in charge 1969 - Sir Matt Busby resigned as Manager of Manchester United for the first time. He had led our deadly rivals to the European Cup, five League titles and two FA Cups. He was soon to be replaced by Wilf McGuinness, a former ‘Busby babe’. A new deal 2009 – The club announced a three-year partnership deal with international tyre company Maxxis. On the same day, David N’Gog played for France Under-21’s in the Toulon Tournament as they beat Qatar 1-0. Also on the move 2007 - Don Hutchison was released by Coventry City after four goals in forty outings. He found a new club later in the summer when he joined Luton Town. 2019 – The departures of left-back Alberto Moreno and forward Daniel Sturridge were announced. Moreno struck three times in 141 reds games after signing for £12m from his hometown club Sevilla in August 2014. Disappointing farewells 2022 - Sadio Mané played his 269th and last reds game as we lost the UEFA Champions League Final 1-0 to Real Madrid at the Stade de France outside Paris. The start of the game was delayed due to awful crowd management by the French police and UEFA. Vinícius Júnior bagged the only goal of the game after an hour, one of his five strikes past us to date. 2023 – Diogo Jota netted before Roberto Firmino struck in his final reds game as we took an early two-goal lead at Southampton. James Ward-Prowse and Kamaldeen Sulemana both scored to draw the Saints level at half time, the latter with his first Saints goal. Sulemana and Adam Armstrong both netted to put the home side 4-2 in front, but Cody Gakpo and Jota scored inside a minute to level the scores. Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and James Milner all also made their final appearances for the club. On target for England 1976 - Phil Thompson scored the winner for England, his only goal for his country, as they beat Italy 3-2 in the US Bicentenary Tournament in New York. Digger’s debut 1983 - Future red John Barnes made his senior England debut as they were held to a goalless draw in the British International Championships in Northern Ireland. Staying and going 2018 – It was announced that Brazilian midfielder Fabinho would sign on 1st July for an initial £39m. He scored eleven times in 219 outings across his first five seasons, helping us to claim the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield. 2013 – Manchester City’s centre-half Kolo Touré agreed to join the reds on a free transfer in July of that year, once his contract had expired. He netted just once in 71 first-team appearances for the reds before being released in July 2016. 2021 – It was announced that centre-half Ibrahima Konaté would sign from RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. on 1st July, already helping us claim the FA Cup and two League Cups. On the same day, ex-red Mikel San José had his contract with Birmingham City terminated by mutual consent after 28 outings in his one season with the Blues. 2020 – Midfielder Abdi Sharif signed a new contract. He was with the reds since the age of nine, netting in the shoot-out as we beat Manchester City to claim the FA Youth Cup in 2019 but left the club in the summer of 2021. On the same day, Barry Lewtas was appointed Under-23’s Coach, having been with the Academy since 2013, and was in charge of that FA Youth Cup-winning side. 2009 - Fernando Torres agreed a new improved contract to tie him to the club until 2013, although he left for a Chelsea in January 2011 for a £50m fee.
