Happy birthday Digger 1963 - John Barnes was born at Up Park in Kingston, Jamaica. He signed from Watford for £900,000 in June 1987, a transfer that had been heavily trailed for at least six months. Kopites were not disappointed by his performances once he had arrived, as he helped us to two League titles, FA Cup, League Cup and two FA Charity Shields during an Anfield career in which he scored 108 goals in 407 appearances. He was also twice voted Football Writers’ Player Of The Year, as well as once by his fellow players, joining Newcastle United on a free transfer in August 1997. He became

2,000 up 2004 - We hosted our 2,000th League game, with West Bromwich Albion on the receiving end of a 3-0 defeat. Steve Finnan scored his only reds goal while Luis García bagged the first of his thirty strikes, after Steven Gerrard had opened the scoring. Doss debuts 1981 - Italian left-back Andrea Dossena was born in Lodi. He signed from Udinese for £7m in July 2008 in a four-year deal. He made 31 appearances, saving his two goals for the same week, first at home to Real Madrid and then at Manchester United. He left Anfield to sign for SSC Napoli for €4.25m in January 2010. A n

Happy birthday Rafa 1960 – Former reds boss Rafael Benítez was born in Madrid. He arrived from Valencia in June 2004 and took charge of the reds on 350 occasions, winning 194 times and leading us to the European Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield as well as three other finals. He left the club “by mutual consent” in June 2010. Clinching the title 1906 – We secured our second League title despite losing 3-2 on Easter Monday at Bolton Wanderers, as nearest challengers Preston North End also lost and so could not catch the reds. We therefore became the first team to win

The greatest performance ever 1988 - We trounced Nottingham Forest 5-0, just four days after we had beaten them 2-1 in the FA Cup Semi-final. It was a stunning display that the legendary Tom Finney described as “the greatest performance ever”. John Aldridge bagged a brace, to add to goals from Ray Houghton, Gary Gillespie and Peter Beardsley. Bruce Grobbelaar was playing his 400th reds game. 1929 - We also netted five, winning 5-2 at Derby County, with Henry Race and John Clark both bagging braces, and Gordon Hodgson also on the scoresheet. Harry Bedford struck two of his nine goals agains
