Liddell’s last 1960 - Billy Liddell scored his 228th and final reds goal, becoming our oldest post-war goalscorer, aged 38 years 55 days. We beat Stoke City 5-1 in the Second Division at Anfield, with Jimmy Harrower adding a brace, and Roger Hunt and Dave Hickson also netting. Hickson was in fact on target for the fourth consecutive match, in which time he had struck six times in total. A new boss 1951 – Don Welsh was officially appointed Manager. His contract awarded him £1,500 per year, with an additional annual £500 for expenses. He took charge of 232 reds games, winning just 81, a

Another treble for Gordon 1934 - Our best ever win on this day came when Gordon Hodgson netted a hat-trick in a 6-2 home League win over Middlesbrough, the fourteenth of his seventeen for the club. Sam English grabbed a brace, with Harold Taylor also on target and forward Tosh Johnson making his reds bow on the day he signed. Benny Yorston struck two of his five goals against the reds. Derby joy 1973 - Emlyn Hughes struck a brace in the final eight minutes to hand us a 2-0 win at Goodison Park. This helped give us the momentum to claim the League title that season, our first for seven

Crouchie at the treble 2007 - Peter Crouch scored the perfect hat-trick of right-foot, header and left-foot shot as we thumped Arsenal 4-1 at Anfield to gain some measure of revenge for having been dumped out of both the FA and League Cups by the Gunners in L4 already that season. John Arne Riise played his 200th League game, while Daniel Agger grabbed the other goal, with William Gallas on target for the visitors. This was George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks’ first game as owners of the reds. 1969 - We were held to a 1-1 draw by Arsenal at Anfield. Tommy Smith converted a penalty at the s

Yanks in 2007 - Liverpool FC announced that George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks now owned 98.6% of the club’s shares and intended to compulsorily acquire the remaining shares. Chief Executive Rick Parry said, “The incredibly high level of acceptance of the offer shows shareholders have faith in the vision outlined for the club by George Gillett and Tom Hicks.” The two Americans remained in control until October 2010. We’re all on our way to Wembley 1965 - We beat Chelsea 2-0 in a Villa Park Semi-final en route to our first ever FA Cup triumph. John Mortimore had a goal disallowed for the

Stevie off but derby joy 2006 - Steven Gerrard was sent off at home to Everton for two quick-fire yellow cards before Phil Neville put us ahead at the end of the first half with a superb headed own goal from a corner. Luis García put us 2-0 up with a beautiful lob soon after the restart, our 500th home Premiership goal. Tim Cahill headed the visitors back into the game with one of his five goals against us, also their hundredth League goal in an Anfield derby. Substitute Andy van der Meyde was sent off for elbowing Xabi Alonso just five minutes after coming on before Harry Kewell rounded off

Happy birthday Jerzy 1973 - Jerzy Dudek was born in Rybnik. The big Pole in our goal made 186 reds appearances after signing from Feyenoord for £4.85m in August 2001, helping us to glory in Istanbul, as well as the Worthington Cup in 2003. He left to join Real Madrid in July 2007, although he barely featured for their first team. A new boss 1951 – Don Welsh took charge of his first reds game as Jack Haigh nabbed the only goal of our top-flight meeting with Charlton Athletic at Anfield. He had been officially appointed eighteen days earlier. Away goals galore 1985 - John Wark ne

Taylor out 1959 - Phil Taylor resigned as Manager, paving the way for the arrival of Bill Shankly the following month. He had made 345 appearances as right-half before and after the war, netting 34 times and winning one League title, and captaining the side. He joined the coaching staff when he retired from playing in 1954, and became Manager two years later, staying in the job for three years. However, he has the unhappy distinction of being the only reds boss never to manage the side in the top flight. He said, “The strain of it all has made me very tired at times and I decided, great as i

Supersub’s treble 1980 - David Johnson missed our trip to Norwich City after receiving four stitches to a head wound acquired on international duty, while Graeme Souness was suspended, which meant that Bob Paisley made his first changes to the reds side for seventeen games. Sammy Lee and David Fairclough stepped in, with supersub notching his only reds hat-trick in our 5-3 win. We had fallen behind to a first-minute header from the veteran Martin Peters, the last of his fourteen goals past us, with Kevin Reeves levelling things again with his head before the break, one of his four strikes ag

Xabi from his own half 2006 - Jan Kromkamp made his reds bow in a thrilling FA Cup Third Round tie at Luton Town. We took the lead through Steven Gerrard before falling 3-1 behind with Djibril Cissé having a penalty saved with the score at 2-1. Florent Sinama-Pongolle bagged a brace with his first goal being our thirteenth from a substitute that season, a new club record. Xabi Alonso also struck twice, with our final goal being an outrageous strike from inside his own half, with the keeper making his way back from a corner. Scott Carson made his ninth and final reds appearance in this game.

The knight departs 1969 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt was sold to Bolton Wanderers for £33,000, after ten years at Anfield. In that time, he had struck a then-record 286 times in 492 reds games, helping us to two League titles, the Second Division championship, our first FA Cup win in 1965 and an FA Charity Shield. Luis torments the Canaries again 2013 - Luis Suárez scored four sublime goals as we thumped Norwich City 5-1 at Anfield, his third hat-trick against the Canaries, becoming the first reds player to score three trebles against the same team. His third goal was his fiftieth League strike for the club, in his 86th Premiership game. He also set up Raheem Sterling for our fifth after Bradley Johnson had netted a late consolation. The reds start out 1892 - We played our first ever competitive fixture, trouncing Higher Walton 8-0 in a Lancashire League fixture at Anfield, in front of a crowd of just 200. John Smith, Joe McQue and James Cameron all netted braces, with Malcolm McVean and John McBride also notching. West Derby-born Joe Pearson was the only non-Scot in this ‘Team of the Macs’. 1898 - We stepped out in red for the first time, as we beat The Wednesday 4-0 at Anfield, with centre-half Alex Raisbeck making his debut. We had played in blue and white quartered shirts until then. Left-half Bill Goldie bagged

An epic swindle 2010 – The sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures under the leadership of John W. Henry was completed, after a chaotic few days of court cases. On the same day, Jamie Carragher signed a contract extension tying him to the club until 2013, while future reds Emre Can and Samed Yeşil both played as Germany Under-17’s won a European Championships qualifier 5-0 in Estonia. Michael at the treble 1983 - Michael Robinson netted a hat-trick, his first League goals for the reds, as we won 3-1 at West Ham United, despite Craig Johnston being sent off just after the hour

Le Boss taken ill 2001 - Gérard Houllier was admitted to Broadgreen Hospital with chest pains during our Anfield fixture with Leeds United. Thankfully he went on to make a full recovery. Future red Harry Kewell scored for the Yorkshire outfit, before Danny Murphy equalised, handing us our 600th Premiership point. The reds therefore became the third team, after Manchester United and Arsenal, to reach this milestone. First ever Merseyside derby 1894 - We played Everton for the first time in a senior game, unfortunately going down 3-0 at Goodison Park in our ninth ever game in the top fl

Goalscoring debutants 1946 - Forward Cyril Done scored on his official reds debut as we were held 1-1 by Charlton Athletic at home. He had also scored in the previous first-class reds game in which he had played - seven years before, just before the outbreak of war when the season was cancelled. Future reds boss Don Welsh netted for the visitors, having previously done so against us before the Second World War! 1907 - Harold Fitzpatrick scored on his reds debut to hand us a 1-0 home victory over Sunderland in another top-flight encounter as outside-right Arthur Goddard played his 200th red
