Another treble for Gordon 1934 - Our best ever win on this day came when Gordon Hodgson netted a hat-trick in a 6-2 home League win over Middlesbrough, the fourteenth of his seventeen for the club. Sam English grabbed a brace, with Harold Taylor also on target and forward Tosh Johnson making his reds bow on the day he signed. Benny Yorston struck two of his five goals against the reds. Derby joy 1973 - Emlyn Hughes struck a brace in the final eight minutes to hand us a 2-0 win at Goodison Park. This helped give us the momentum to claim the League title that season, our first for seven

Brian’s bow 1969 - University graduate Brian Hall made his reds bow in a goalless top-flight draw at Stoke City as a substitute for Roger Hunt. He went on to net 21 times in 224 reds appearances, was also the club’s Public Relations Manager from 1991 until retiring in 2012. 1960 - We also faced the Potters, with Billy Liddell striking a brace, including a penalty, as we beat them 3-0 in a Second Division fixture at Anfield. We won it eight times 2012 – We secured the League Cup for a record eighth time, eventually defeating Cardiff City 3-2 at Wembley on penalties. Joe Mason scored for the Welsh side after Glen Johnson had struck the crossbar, with Martin Škrtel equalising after an hour. Substitute Dirk Kuyt put us ahead in extra time, before clearing off the line. However, Ben Turner then bagged a very late leveller. Steven Gerrard and Charlie Adam both failed to convert from twelve yards, but Kuyt, man-of-the-match Stewart Downing and Glen Johnson all converted before Steven’s cousin Anthony Gerrard missed th

Happy birthday Sammy 1959 - Sammy Lee was born in Liverpool. He had a fine career in the reds midfield, bagging nineteen goals in 295 games, helping us to two European Cups, four League titles, four League Cups and the FA Charity Shield. He returned as a coach in 1992, initially being put in charge of the reserves. He left the backroom staff in the summer of 2004 for a full-time post with England, before joining Bolton Wanderers, but returned to Anfield in May 2008 as Assistant Manager, staying in that role until June 2011. Red trebles 1964 - Ian St. John scored three in a 6-1 First Division win over Sheffield United at Anfield. Roger Hunt bagged a brace, with Peter Thompson also on the scoresheet. 1913 - Arthur Metcalf bagged a treble in our first ever FA Cup meeting with the Gunners, then known as Woolwich Arsenal. We won 4-1 at the Manor Ground to reach the Third Round, with Billy Lacey also on target. Unfortunately, we went out to Newcastle United at the next hurdle. 1975 - We also faced Arsenal, losing a top-flight encounter 2-0 at Highbury as Alan Ball netted two of his eleven goals against the reds.

A century against the Baggies 2005 - Peter Crouch scored our hundredth home League goal against West Bromwich Albion as we won 1-0 at Anfield, to secure our tenth consecutive League victory. This was the third consecutive game that Crouchie had notched in, inside a week. Gary Mac honoured 2001 - Gary McAllister was awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List for his services to football. He had been a professional footballer for twenty years, winning the League title while with Leeds United, as well as helping the reds to a famous treble earlier that year. 2008 - Kenny Dalglish

Ged in charge 1998 - Gérard Houllier took over as sole Manager, with Roy Evans leaving after four years in the hot-seat. Uncle Roy’s only trophy in charge had been the Coca Cola Cup in 1995, although he led us to four consecutive top four finishes in the League. Ged went on to lead us to the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield before departing in the summer of 2004. Kenny bows out 1986 - Kenny Dalglish won his 102nd and final Scotland cap as they beat Luxembourg 3-0 in a Euro ’88 qualifier at Hampden Park. Alan Hansen won his 25th cap in the same ga

Le Boss taken ill 2001 - Gérard Houllier was admitted to Broadgreen Hospital with chest pains during our Anfield fixture with Leeds United. Thankfully he went on to make a full recovery. Future red Harry Kewell scored for the Yorkshire outfit, before Danny Murphy equalised, handing us our 600th Premiership point. The reds therefore became the third team, after Manchester United and Arsenal, to reach this milestone. First ever Merseyside derby 1894 - We played Everton for the first time in a senior game, unfortunately going down 3-0 at Goodison Park in our ninth ever game in the top fl

Rush scored one, Rush scored two 1983 - Ian Rush scored five goals, becoming the third of five reds to do so in one game, as we thumped fourth-placed Luton Town 6-0 at home in the League, with his hat-trick completed by the 36th minute. This was particularly impressive considering that he had to take painkillers before the game for a niggling groin injury and had only been passed fit two hours before the game. Kenny Dalglish netted the other goal, his 99th in the League for the reds. Amazingly, Tony Woodcock grabbed five goals for Arsenal on the same day, in their 6-2 victory at Aston Villa.

In comes Nicol 1981 - Steve Nicol signed from Ayr United for £300,000. He played 468 times across the defence and midfield, scoring 46 times and helping us to four League titles, European Cup, three FA Cups and an FA Charity Shield, as well as being named the Football Writers’ Player of the Year in 1989. He left the club to sign for Notts County on a free transfer in January 1995. A win at the Bridge 2008 - Xabi Alonso’s deflected strike was the only goal of our trip to Stamford Bridge, handing Chelsea their first home League defeat since February 2004, ending an 86-game unbeaten run.

Double debutants 1987 - John Barnes and new record signing Peter Beardsley both made their official reds debuts as we beat Arsenal 2-1 at Highbury, thanks to goals from John Aldridge and Steve Nicol, who scored an extraordinary header from the edge of the penalty box. This was Kenny Dalglish’s fiftieth League win as reds boss, coming in his 85th game - still the best record of any reds boss. Happy birthday Ox 1993 – Midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was born in Portsmouth. He signed from Arsenal for £35m in August 2017, netting thirteen times in 87 appearances as well as suffering a

Wembley glory at last 1965 – This day finally brought the FA Cup to Anfield for the first time in our history. The game against Leeds United was goalless after ninety minutes, with full-back Gerry Byrne playing most of the match with a broken collar-bone. Roger Hunt opened the scoring in extra time, before Billy Bremner equalised for the Yorkshire side with one of his five goals past us. With five minutes remaining, “up popped the head of Ian St. John” to win the cup. 1980 - We played in the only FA Cup Semi-final to go to a third replay, which we unfortunately lost to Arsenal courtesy

Red endings 1978 - Tommy Smith played his 638th and final reds game as we beat Arsenal at Anfield in the League. David Fairclough grabbed the only goal of the game as we secured the points to ensure our sixteenth consecutive season of European football. 1928 - Left-winger George Pither played his twelfth and final reds game as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Leicester City. Tom Reid netted our goal, with Arthur Chandler bagging one of his six past us. 1998 - Rob Jones made the last of his 243 reds appearances in our 4-1 defeat at Chelsea. Justice for the 96 1989 - The Hillsborough Disaster occurred that tragically took the lives of 96 Liverpool supporters. R.I.P. and justice for the 96, now that the truth has finally been revealed to the wider world. Happy birthdays 1947 – Recent Chairman Martin Broughton was born in London. He was appointed in April 2010 to locate a buyer for the club from George Gillett and Tom Hicks, which he succeeded in finding in New England Sports Ventures in October 2010, following a series of legal battles. He left his role in the following month and was knighted for his services to business i

Ged’s return 2002 - A famous night in Anfield history came as we defeated Roma 2-0 to qualify for the Quarter-finals of the Champions League in our first season in the current format of the competition. Jari Litmanen’s penalty and an Emile Heskey header ensured we did not miss the injured Michael Owen or suspended Didi Hamann. The night was made complete by the emotional return of Gérard Houllier to the dug-out after heart surgery. Another win in the North East 2006 - We won 3-1 at Newcastle United as we played with three centre-backs and two wing-backs for the first time under Rafael
