Red trebles 2000 - Michael Owen scored a first half hat-trick past former team-mate David James as we defeated Aston Villa 3-1 at Anfield. He therefore became our first ever player to score two first-half hat-tricks in League games. Steve Stone bagged Villa’s late consolation. 1965 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt netted a treble in our 5-1 win at West Ham United, after Gordon Milne and Ian Callaghan had opened the scoring. Martin Peters scored for the Irons, one of his fourteen goals past us, with all the goals coming before the hour mark. 1986 - We also thumped the Hammers on their home turf when substitute Kenny Dalglish struck twice in a 5-2 victory, with Ronnie Whelan, Craig Johnston and Ian Rush also on target. Future reds first-team coach Kevin Keen made his senior debut for the Hammers in this game. Ray Stewart put the home side in front inside ten minutes, with Tony Cottee bagging the first of his eight goals against the reds. Macca signs on 1985 - Steve McMahon signed from Aston Villa for £375,000, becoming the first arrival direct from Villa Park. He was Kenny Dalglish’s first signing, winning three League titles, the FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields before joining Manchester City in December 1991 after fifty goals in 277 games. Births and deaths 1892 - Scottish keeper Ken Campbell was born in Cambuslang, near Glasgow. He signed from Cambuslang Rangers in May 1911 and took over from Sam Hardy in the reds goal, playing 142 times including the 1914 FA Cup Final, before being replaced after the war by the great Elisha Scott. On exactly the same day, outside-left Albert Pearson was born in Tynemouth. He netted four times in 51 reds games after signing from Port Vale in March 1919, returning there two years later. 1988 - Jimmy Ryan was born in Maghull. The central midfielder joined League Two outfit Accrington Stanley in August 2008, having featured in both of our recent victorious FA Youth Cup campaigns, but failed to break into the first–team squad. 1948 – Half-back Bill Keech died. He played just six Second Division games in late 1895, having signed from Barnsley St. Peter’s that October, helping us to claim the title that season. He later played as a forward for Leicester Fosse, before returning to the half-back line with Queens Park Rangers’ first professional team in the Southern League. 2003 – Inside-forward Harold Jones died. He joined the reds in January 1952, but only made one senior appearance in a 5-1 thumping at Anfield by Preston North End in September 1953. He moved on to Rhyl in June 1954. A goalscoring debut 1902 - Inside-right George Livingstone scored on his reds bow as we beat Blackburn Rovers 5-2 at Anfield in our first game of the season, with Sam Raybould and Jack Cox both grabbing braces. Inside-forward Edgar Chadwick also debuted in this game, with Walter Whittaker nabbing two of his six goals against the reds. Four against 1913 - Danny Shea scored four of his ten goals against the reds as Blackburn Rovers thumped us 6-2 at Ewood Park, with Tom Miller netting both our goals and Bob Ferguson missing a penalty for the reds. Eddie Latheron also scored for the home side with Billy Bradshaw converting from the spot. Red centurions 1954 – Centre-half Laurie Hughes played his 200th League game for the reds as we lost a Second Division fixture 3-0 at Bristol Rovers. Geoff Bradford netted the first three of his five goals past us. 1950 – George Kay took charge of the reds for the 300th time in the League as we defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in L4 with Albert Stubbins and Jack Balmer on the scoresheet. 1909 – We won 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers with Jack Parkinson nabbing a brace, including his fiftieth League goal for the reds. Managerial moves 1989 - Mark Lawrenson was appointed Manager of Fourth Division Peterborough United. They finished ninth at the end of that season, and he stayed in the job for fourteen months, before being sacked. 2004 - Graeme Souness resigned as Blackburn Rovers boss after four and a half years in charge. He took up the vacant managerial post at Newcastle United the following week, but was sacked after seventeen months at St. James’ Park. Out with the old, in with the new 1995 - John Barnes won his 79th and final cap in England’s goalless friendly draw with Colombia at Wembley. He had scored eleven times for his country. Jamie Redknapp made his senior international debut in the same game, while Nick Barmby won his first cap as a Middlesbrough player. Steve McManaman also played. On the same day, Markus Babbel grabbed his only international goal as Germany beat Georgia 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Nuremberg. Fellow future red Christian Ziege netted his first goal for the German senior side in the same game. Ex-red István Kozma won his fortieth and final cap for Hungary as they lost a qualifier 2-0 in Turkey. Vlad on target again and again 2003 - Vladimír Šmicer struck in his third consecutive Czech Republic game for the second time, with clubmate Milan Baroš also on target in their 3-1 European Championships qualifying win in Belarus. 2002 - Milan bagged a brace with Vlad also scoring in their 5-0 friendly defeat of FR Yugoslavia in Prague, despite having broken a toe in the first minute of the game. 1997 - Future red Šmicer also netted for his country as they won a World Cup qualifier 2-0 in the Faroe Islands. 1998 - Šmicer grabbed the only goal of a Euro 2000 qualifier in the same country, with future reds clubmate Patrik Berger also playing. Meanwhile, Christian Benteke scored while winning his last Under-21’s cap as a Royal Standard de Liège player in Belgium’s 4-1 qualifying win over Azerbaijan in Antwerp. Fellow future red Fabio Borini scored past Péter Gulácsi as Italy Under-21’s won 3-0 in a qualifier in Hungary. FC Köln player in their goalless Euro 2004 qualifier with Northern Ireland in Donetsk. 2016 – Mohamed Salah played his first game for Egypt since moving permanently to Roma as they lost a friendly 1-0 in South Africa, with captain Ragnar Klavan playing for Estonia for the first time since arriving at Anfield as they were thumped 5-0 in a Wo5ld Cup qualifier in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Ex-red Luis Suárez converted a penalty as Uruguay thumped Paraguay 4-0 in Montevideo, while Philippe Coutinho, Marko Grujić, Ragnar Klavan, Harry Wilson, Gini Wijnaldum, future reds Alisson Becker, Diogo Jota, Ozan Kabak, Kostas Tsimikas and Virgil van Dijk, and ex-reds Péter Gulácsi, Krisztián Németh and Brad Smith all also featured for their countries. 2015 – Future red Wijnaldum also played for his country, as the Netherlands lost a European Championships qualifier 3-0 in Turkey. Disappointment against the Baggies 1920 – We were held to a goalless draw by West Bromwich Albion in a top-flight encounter at Anfield. Inside-forward Tom Miller played his 146th and last game for the club. 1976 - We lost 1-0 in a League Cup Second Round replay at The Hawthorns, with Irish midfielder Mick Martin bagging the decisive goal. Youngsters on target for their countries Daniel Sjölund struck for Finland Under-21’s in European Championships qualifiers on this day in consecutive years. 2002 - He netted in their 2-1 defeat of Wales in Valkeakoski. 2003 - He bagged the only goal of their game in Azerbaijan. 2012 - Jonjo Shelvey scored his first goal for England Under-21’s as they won a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in Azerbaijan, with future red Steven Caulker nabbing his second and last strike at this level. Kenny steps down 1991 - Kenny Dalglish announced his resignation as reds boss in a press conference at Anfield. He had been in charge for nearly six years, leading us to the double in his first season, and a further two League titles, FA Cup, two FA Charity Shields and Screen Sport Super Cup. The pressures of management, and his role in counselling players, supporters and the city of Liverpool in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster led to him stepping down. Heading towards Istanbul 2005 - We beat Bayer 04 Leverkusen 3-1 at Anfield in the first leg of our Champions League round of sixteen tie. Luis García and John Arne Riise netted before Dietmar Hamann put us in a seemingly unassailable lead in stoppage time, with his eleventh and last reds goal. Anthony Le Tallec came off the bench to make his first senior appearance under Rafael Benítez. However, a Jerzy Dudek fumble handed Franca the chance to grab an away goal, which many commentators at the time felt might prove crucial. They were wrong. Spanish help against the Italians 2001 – We played an amazing UEFA Cup Fourth Round match against Roma at Anfield that we lost 1-0, although we still progressed to the Quarter-finals in a cauldron of noise. Michael Owen failed to convert his fifth penalty in eleven attempts as it was saved, and who could forget the penalty/corner incident when the ball struck Markus Babbel in the area? Fortunately, Spanish referee Jose Maria Garcia Aranda made the right decision! Uruguayan left-winger Gianni Guigou bagged the only goal of the game, with midfielder Damiano Tomassi sent off late on. Billy’s treble 1958 - Billy Liddell scored all our goals with a classic hat-trick of right- and left-foot strikes and a header in a Second Division match at Blackburn Rovers that ended 3-3. The game was goalless at half time, with four of the goals coming in a four-minute spell immediately after the break! Royston Stephenson netted one of his four goals past us, with Peter Dobing scoring the first of his eight and Bryan Douglas also on the scoresheet. 1997 - We also drew with Rovers, with our Anfield meeting ending goalless as Dominic Matteo’s late header came back off the bar. 1956 - More cruelly, the referee blew for full-time as Billy Liddell’s shot was on its way into the net, condemning us to a 2-1 home defeat against Manchester City in an FA Cup Fifth Round replay, with right-winger Jimmy Payne playing his 243rd and last reds game as right-winger Roy Saunders reached a century of reds outings. Alan Arnell had opened the scoring, with the eventual winner coming in the 89th minute. The groundsman had to paint the lines blue before kick-off due to the pitch being covered with snow. Both sides were wearing black armbands in honour of reds Chairman Will Harrop who had died suddenly the day before. 2009 – We were held to a 1-1 League draw at Anfield by Manchester City. Dirk Kuyt bagged the equaliser after ex-red Craig Bellamy’s strike took a wicked deflection off Álvaro Arbeloa for an own goal. Carra’s record 2000 - Jamie Carragher set a new record by winning his 23rd cap for England Under-21’s as they beat Argentina 1-0 in a friendly at Craven Cottage, with future red Joe Cole making his debut at this level. He went on to play 27 times in total, which remained a record until Scott Carson reached 28 in June 2007, although James Milner later reached 46. Most recently 2015 – We won 2-0 at Southampton, with Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling on target, with the home side claiming a series of spot kicks that were not given by the referee. He has been playing music and reading out team news at Anfield since August 1971. A rare defeat 1986 - We suffered our only home League defeat of the season as Bruce Grobbelaar let a long-range Kevin Ratcliffe effort squirm through his grasp, with Gary Lineker also netting one of his six strikes past us to give reigning champions Everton a 2-0 win at Anfield, leaving the Blues eight points ahead of the reds. Jan Mølby played the first half as a make-shift striker in the absence through injury of both Kenny Dalglish and Paul Walsh. He netted twice in seventeen outings, going on to join the Bantams permanently three months later. 1997 - Nicolas Anelka joined Arsenal from Paris Saint-Germain for £500,000. He bagged 28 goals in 91 games for the Gunners, before being sold for £23m to Real Madrid. 2008 - Ex-reds reserves forward Paul Dalglish signed for Kilmarnock. He only played six times before retiring at the end of the season, having failed to find the back of the net. 2017 - Adam Lallana signed a new three-year contract, notching 22 times in 178 reds games since arriving from Southampton for £23m in July 2014 before moving on to Brighton & Hove Albion in July 2020 having helped the reds to claim the Premier League title and FIFA Club World Cup. 2021 – Defender Sean Wilson signed pro terms with the reds, having been at the Academy since the age of seven. However, he was released in the summer of 2022, joining Skelmersdale United that August. Future red Paul Ince opened the scoring with a spectacular volley, before heading in a second. John Aldridge converted a penalty, with Steve Staunton then heading into his own net, unchallenged. A Tony Gale free-kick completed the scoring. Births and death 2021 – Ray Kennedy died. After five successful years as a forward with Arsenal, Bob Paisley converted him into a left-sided midfielder following his club record £180,000 arrival as Bill Shankly’s last signing in July 1974.
