Heading towards Istanbul 2005 - We beat Bayer 04 Leverkusen 3-1 at Anfield in the first leg of our Champions League round

Steve Stone bagged Villa’s late consolation. 1965 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt netted a treble in our 5-1 win at West Ham United, after Gordon Milne and Ian Callaghan had opened the scoring. Martin Peters scored for the Irons, one of his fourteen goals past us, with all the goals coming before the hour mark. 1986 - We also thumped the Hammers on their home turf when

Happy birthday Willie 1939 - Left-half Willie Stevenson was born in Leith. He signed from Rangers for £20,000 in October 1962 and missed just nine League games in his first four seasons, making a total of 241 appearances and netting eighteen times. He helped us to two League titles and our first FA Cup triumph in 1965 before moving on to Stoke City in December 1967. A win at the Bridge 2008 - Xabi Alonso’s deflected strike was the only goal of our trip to Stamford Bridge, handing Chelsea their first home League defeat since February 2004, ending an 86-game unbeaten run. Chris Sutton’s late consolation was one of his seven strikes against the reds. On the same day, future red Sami Hyypiä played for Finland in their 2-0 friendly defeat in Spain. 1988 - John Durnin made his third and final reds appearance, as a substitute, as we lost 4-1 at West Ham United at the same stage of the competition, our worst ever League Cup defeat. Future red Sadio Mané had given the home side a very early lead but a brace from Daniel Sturridge put us ahead. Jordon Ibe was also on target after the break as we headed towards Wembley. 2018 – Divock Origi pounced on a Jordan Pickford error to hand us victory in the Anfield derby in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time, having already hit the crossbar from close range late in the game.
