Birth of a reds great 1919 - Bob Paisley was born in Hetton-le-Hole in County Durham. He made 277 reds appearances, netting twelve times and helping us to the League title in 1947 before joining the coaching staff in 1954. He took over as Manager twenty years later and remains the most successful English boss of all time, leading us to three European Cups, six League titles, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, four League Cups and five FA Charity Shields. Happy birthdays 1986 – Spanish left-back José Enrique was born in Valencia. He signed from Newcastle United for £5.5m in August 2011, notching twice in 99 reds appearances before being released in May 2016. He moved on to Real Zaragoza four months later. 1983 – Pepijn Lijnders was born in Broekhuizen in the Netherlands. He joined the reds as First-team Development Coach in 2014, leaving the club in January 2018 to take over as N.E.C. boss. However, he was sacked just four months later, returning to Melwood in June 2018 as Assistant Manager. 1883 – Keeper Peter Platt was born in Rishton. He signed from Blackburn Rovers in May 1902, playing 44 times before moving on to Luton Town in 1904. He sadly died aged just 39 in a mini-flu epidemic in Nuneaton in January 1922. Four for Harold 1932 - Centre-forward Harold Barton scored all four reds goals as we beat Chesterfield 4-2 at their Recreation Ground in a Fourth Round FA Cup tie. Unfortunately, we were knocked out by Chelsea in the Sixth Round that season. Beating the Blues 1937 - We won the Anfield derby 3-2 with Fred Howe, Phil Taylor and Jack Balmer on target, and Alex Stevenson bagging a brace for the Blues. Most recently 2022 – We won 3-1 at Crystal Palace with Virgil van Dijk and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on target before the break, with Fabinho converting a late spot kick. 2020 – We won 2-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, extending our lead at the top of the table to sixteen points with a game in hand. Jordan Henderson headed us in front early on, but Raúl Jiménez equalised after the break as we conceded our first League goal for more than twelve hours. Roberto Firmino struck the winner. Cup wins We have twice won FA Cup Fourth Round ties 3-0 on this day in history. 1971 - John Toshack, Ian St. John and Chris Lawler netted as we beat Swansea City at Anfield on our way to the Final. This was the Saint’s 425th and final game for the club. 1982 - We won at Sunderland with Kenny Dalglish grabbing a brace and Ian Rush also on the scoresheet. Unfortunately, we lost at Chelsea at the very next hurdle. Tons up 1954 – Centre-half Laurie Hughes played his 200th reds game as Tottenham Hotspur held us to a 2-2 top-flight draw at Anfield. Billy Liddell and John Evans scored with full-back Frank Lock putting through his own net and Sonny Walters nabbing the last of his four strikes past us. 1915 – We lost 2-1 to The Wednesday at Hillsborough with left-back Bob Pursell reaching a century of reds games. Fred Pagnam scored our goal, while David McLean struck one of his eight goals past us with Sam Kirkman bagging the last of his four. A crazy win 2016 – We won by the odd goal in nine at Norwich City, thanks to a stoppage-time Adam Lallana winner that led to a mass celebration on the touchline with boss Jürgen Klopp having his glasses broken. Roberto Firmino put us in front, but we found ourselves 3-1 down. We completed a turnaround to lead 4-3 thanks to goals from Jordan Henderson, a second from Firmino and James Milner. We were still ahead at the ninety-minute mark but Sébastien Bassong bagged a late leveller before the final dénouement. Off the mark 1904 – Forward John Carlin struck the first of his eight reds goals as we drew 2-2 at West Bromwich Albion, with half-back John ‘Geezer’ Hughes also on target with his second and last strike for the club. Carra going free 2006 - Jamie Carragher was awarded the Freedom of Sefton, an honour that thrilled the Bootle-born defender, which he won for his local charity work and the good example he sets young people. He became only the second person to be handed such an accolade. Other births and deaths 2013 – Right-winger Jimmy Payne died. He notched 43 times in 243 appearances for the reds, including the 1950 FA Cup Final, before moving across Stanley Park in April 1956, where he was dogged by injury before retiring to become a newsagent. 1911 – Inside-right Jock Smith committed suicide two days after the death of one of his children. He signed from Sunderland in May 1892, bagging five goals in eleven outings, moving on to The Wednesday in August 1893. 1907 – Scottish inside-forward Willie Walker died in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. He joined the reds from Leith Athletic in May 1897, netting three times in twelve reds games before he returned to his former club for free in August 1898. 1868 – Forward Fred Geary was born in Hyson Green, Nottingham. He signed from Everton for £60 in May 1895, having top scored as they won the League in 1891 and won three England caps. He bagged fourteen goals in 45 reds games, helping us to claim the Second Division title in his first season. 1904 - Left-half Jimmy McDougall was born in Port Glasgow. He signed from Partick Thistle in April 1928 and went on to be nominated into the club’s official Hall of Fame for the 1930’s, having struck twelve times in 356 games for the reds. He moved on to South Liverpool in May 1938 and later set up a successful chandlery business in Liverpool. 1961 – Former Academy Technical Manager Pep Segura was born in A Coruña, Spain. He joined the reds in June 2009 having led Olympiacos to the League and Cup double, moving on in September 2012. 1974 - One-time winger Bernard Diomède was born in Saint-Doulchard, France. He only made five first-team appearances after signing from Auxerre for £3m in June 2000. Stéph’s debut 1993 - Future red Stéphane Henchoz made his full international debut as Roy Hodgson’s Switzerland drew 1-1 with Japan B in a Carlsberg Cup game in Hong Kong, going on to win 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out. Bad boys 2006 - Abel Xavier was sacked by Middlesbrough after being found guilty of breaching UEFA’s anti-doping regulations. He served a ban and subsequently returned to the Riverside, playing 27 times for Boro in total. 2005 – Future red Daniel Agger was sent off for Denmark Under-21’s in an unofficial international against a Panama ‘A’ side, with the game ending 2-2. Four for Milan again 2003 - Milan Baroš scored four for the reserves as they trounced Bradford City 5-0 at the Deva Stadium in Chester. This was the second time that he had knocked four past the Bantams, following a similar performance the previous August. Dietmar Hamann made his comeback from injury in the same game. On the move 2021 – Midfielder Kevin Stewart signed for Blackpool, playing sixteen times in his first campaign with the Tangerines. 2020 – Victor Moses joined Internazionale on loan from Chelsea, failing to score in twenty games in Italy. 2019 – Ex-reds forward Mario Balotelli signed for Olympique de Marseille, scoring eight times in fifteen games for the French side. On the same day, full-back Ryan McLaughlin joined Rochdale from Blackpool, after eleven games for the Seasiders. Meanwhile, full-back Calum Woods joined Bradford City on a free transfer from Preston North End. 2018 – Forward David N’Gog signed for Ross County, netting once in ten outings. On the same day, left-winger Albert Riera announced his retirement from playing. 2017 – Winger Lazar Marković joined Hull City on loan, scoring twice in fourteen outings. 2009 - Emile Heskey joined Aston Villa from Wigan Athletic for £3.5m, after sixteen goals in 88 outings for the Latics. 2007 - Dominic Matteo joined Stoke City on a free transfer from Blackburn Rovers. He struck once in 25 outings for the Potters, often operating as a midfielder. 2003 - Charlie Adam signed for Rangers. He struck eighteen times in 86 games before moving to Blackpool in August 2009 for a club record £500,000, after several loan spells away from Ibrox. 2002 - Reserves defender Alan Navarro was sold to Tranmere Rovers for £225,000, playing 48 times before joining Accrington Stanley in September 2005. 1996 - Reserves forward Lee Jones re-joined Wrexham on loan. He struck nine times in 26 games while on loan at the Racecourse Ground. Reds skippers 2008 - Ex-red El-Hadji Diouf captained Senegal as they drew 2-2 with Tunisia in an Africa Cup of Nations group game in Ghana. 2006 – Diouf also featured as Senegal beat Zimbabwe 2-0 in a group game in Egypt. 2009 – Emiliano Insúa skippered Argentina as they beat Peru 2-1 in a Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventud de América” group game in Venezuela. 2013 – Oussama Assaidi featured for Morocco as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Cape Verde in their Africa Cup of Nations Finals group game in South Africa. 2015 – Ex-red Carl Medjani played for Algeria as they lost 1-0 to Ghana in another group game in Equatorial Guinea. Future red Sadio Mané also featured that day as Senegal drew 1-1 with South Africa. 2012 – Future red Assaidi played as Morocco lost 2-1 to Tunisia in Gabon. 2000 – Future red Fábio Aurélio played for Brazil as they beat Ecuador 2-0 in an Olympics qualifier. On the same day, Alberto Aquilani featured as Italy Under-15’s lost 3-1 to Brazil. 2016 – Future red Ozan Kabak played for Turkey Under-16’s in their 3-1 friendly defeat of the USA. Other reds games 1988 – Peter Beardsley and John Barnes scored as we beat Charlton Athletic 2-0 at Selhurst Park 1960 – We drew a Second Division fixture 3-3 at Middlesbrough, with Brian Clough nabbing two of his ten goals past us. Kenny Thomson put through his own net with Dave Hickson and Roger Hunt also on target to hand us a 3-1 half-time lead. Bill Harris equalised through a late spot-kick. 1926 – We beat Arsenal 3-0 at Anfield with Dick Forshaw netting twice and Cyril Oxley also scoring, while Elisha Scott saved an Alf Baker penalty. Forshaw’s second came with just fifteen seconds left, with the referee momentarily dazed so Tom Bromilow blew the final whistle! 1909 – Joe Hewitt and Ronald Orr struck as we won 2-0 at Bradford City. Bruno le père 2007 – Ex-reds midfielder Bruno Cheyrou and his wife Constance welcomed a son, Nino, in France. On the same day, Shane O’Connor played for the Irish Under-17’s, while future red Lucas captained Brazil as they beat Uruguay 3-1 in a Sudamericano Sub-20 "Juventud de América" game in Paraguay. -
Last gasp drama on the road to Turkey 2004 - We reached the knock-out stage of the Champions League as we came from behind to beat Olympiacos 3-1 at Anfield in our final group game. Rivaldo was on target in the first half for the visitors, but Florent Sinama-Pongolle came on at half time to change the game, bagging an equaliser straight after the break, our 200th goal in Europe’s premier club competition. Neil Mellor put us one goal away from progress with ten minutes to go before Steven Gerrard struck the spectacular, decisive third. Births and death 1951 - Terry McDermott was born in Kirkby. He struck 81 times in 329 reds games after signing from Newcastle United for £175,000 in November 1974, helping us to three European Cups, four League titles, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields. In 1980, he became the first player to win both the PFA and Football Writers’ Player Of The Year Awards in the same season. He netted on his 28th birthday as we won 3-1 at Aston Villa, with Ray Kennedy and Alan Hansen also on the scoresheet, with Brian Little bagging the home side’s consolation. 1994 – Raheem Sterling was born in Kingston, Jamaica. He signed from Queens Park Rangers for £0.5m in February 2010, notching 23 goals in 129 reds games before joining Manchester City for an initial £44m in July 2015. 1995 – Jordon Ibe was born in Bermondsey. He arrived from Wycombe Wanderers for a reported £750,000 in December 2011, notching four times in 58 reds games before moving to Bournemouth for a reported £15m in July 2016. 1923 - Scottish right-back Tom Robertson died. He signed from Stoke for £400 and played 47 times without notching, helping us to claim our first League title in 1901 before joining Southampton in May 1902, with whom he won the Southern League in two successive years. 1946 – Forward Jack Whitham was born in Burnley. He signed from Sheffield Wednesday for £57,000 in April 1970, bagging seven goals in eighteen outings before having his contract terminated by mutual consent in 1974. He then played for Cardiff City and Reading. Razor sheathed 1981 - Ray Kennedy played his 342nd and final domestic reds game as we beat Arsenal 3-0 in a League Cup Fourth Round replay at Anfield, with all three goals coming in extra time. Craig Johnston bagged his first reds goal on his 21st birthday before fellow birthday boy Terry McDermott converted a penalty, with Kenny Dalglish also on target. 1928 – Defender Bert Shears played his sixteenth and final reds game as we lost 2-1 at Sunderland, with Robert Done bagging our consolation and Gordon Hodgson reaching a century of reds games. Dave Halliday struck one of his thirteen goals against the reds, with Bob McKay also on target. Mo’s treble 2018 – Mohamed Salah scored a hat-trick as we thumped Bournemouth 4-0 at their Vitality Stadium, with skipper James Milner playing the 500th Premier League game of his career as we also benefited from a Steve Cook own goal. Stevie’s half century 2007 - Steven Gerrard scored his fiftieth Premiership goal as we lost 3-1 at Reading, our first League defeat of the season, with young centre-back Jack Hobbs making his only ever League start. The home side’s first goal from Stephen Hunt was the hundredth we had conceded in the League under the charge of Rafael Benítez. Kevin Doyle and James Harper also got on the scoresheet. Solitary strikes 1973 - Mick Lyons had a goal for the Blues ruled offside before Alan Waddle grabbed his only reds strike to hand us a 1-0 derby win at Goodison Park against an Everton side who were unbeaten in the League that season. We won despite the absence of John Toshack and Steve Heighway, with Kevin Keegan also having to go off injured. 1951 - Centre-half Laurie Hughes scored his only goal in 326 reds games as we drew 2-2 with Preston North End at Anfield. We had fallen 2-0 behind, through a Ray Lambert own goal and the first of Charlie Wayman’s six strikes past us, before Billy Liddell pulled a goal back. Hughes had gone up front after injuring his thigh and tapped in the equaliser after Preston’s keeper Jimmy Gooch had let a Bill Jones strike slip through his legs. Four for Chelsea 1934 - Dickie Spence scored all four Chelsea goals in their 4-1 defeat of the reds at Stamford Bridge, the first of his six goals against the reds. Forward Dave Wright netted our consolation, while right-back Tommy Cooper made his reds bow. In and out 1996 - Centre-half John Scales was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £2.6m. He had struck four times in 94 appearances after being signed by Roy Evans from Wimbledon for £3.5m in September 1994, before his career was affected by injury. 1899 – Inside-forward Charlie Satterthwaite signed from Burton Swifts. He bagged thirteen goals in 45 outings before moving to New Brompton in 1902 after helping us to claim the League title the year before. Two rangers off track 1993 - Queens Park Rangers had both Simon Barker and Les Ferdinand sent off in our 3-2 win at Anfield. John Barnes and Ian Rush added to Jan Mølby’s penalty. Ferdinand had netted one of his six goals against the reds, with Barker also on target for the visitors. Defeat in Europe 1998 - We lost 1-0 to Celta de Vigo at Anfield to bow out at the Third Round stage of the UEFA Cup 4-1 on aggregate. Mixed fortunes against the steel city boys We have twice faced Sheffield United on this day in history, without winning, although we have beaten their neighbours Wednesday, with all these games coming in the First Division. 1894 - We drew 2-2 on our first ever trip to Bramall Lane, with Tom Bradshaw bagging a brace and Harry Hammond netting twice for the home side. 1923 - United left Anfield with all the points, when Harry Chambers and Dick Forshaw netted in our 3-2 defeat. Harry Johnson and Billy Gillespie each struck one of their seven goals against the reds, with Fred Tunstall bagging one of his eight past us. 1962 - Kevin Lewis and Roger Hunt struck as we won 2-0 at Hillsborough. Bennett yet again 1917 - Thomas Bennett scored all five goals as we thumped Rochdale 5-1 in a Wartime League match at Anfield. Amazingly, this was the fifteenth consecutive game in which he had scored for the reds! A new management role 1998 - 1950’s reds wing-half Keith Burkinshaw was put in temporary charge of Aberdeen after Roy Aitken was sacked. He was unbeaten in four games but returned to a Director of Football role in the New Year, when Paul Hegarty was appointed. Deano moves into the sun 1998 - Dean Saunders joined SL Benfica from Sheffield United for £500,000. He spent one season at the Estádio da Luz, bagging five goals in seventeen League outings, before returning to England to join Bradford City. Sir Roger for England 1965 - Roger Hunt struck as England beat Spain 2-0 in a friendly in Madrid. Other reds games 2001 – Michael Owen and Patrik Berger netted as we beat Middlesbrough 2-0 at Anfield. 1956 – We lost a Second Division fixture 1-0 at Nottingham Forest. 1906 – Bobby Robinson was on target in our 3-1 defeat at Bristol City, but had to miss the second half due to concussion. Andy Burton struck the first two of his four goals against the reds after the break, with future red Sam Gilligan bagging the first of his five past us. 1900 – We beat Manchester City by the odd goal in seven at their old Hyde Road ground. Jack Cox, Andy McGuigan, Sam Raybould and Tommy Robertson were all on the scoresheet. Going through 2003 - Zak Whitbread featured as the USA Under-20’s reached the Quarter-finals of the World Championship Finals in the United Arab Emirates by defeating the Ivory Coast 2-0. On the same day, future red Javier Mascherano featured as Argentina beat Egypt 2-1 after extra time at the same stage of the competition. Ellison’s bow 2006 - Academy youngster James Ellison made his debut for England Under-16’s, playing alongside clubmate Sean Highdale in their 2-1 defeat of Scotland to clinch the Victory Shield in Sc***horpe. 2016 – Future reds reserves keeper Vítězslav Jaroš played for the Czech Republic Under-16’s as they lost 3-2 to the Netherlands. 2019 – Isaac Mabaya represented England at the same level, winning his fifth and last cap as they drew 3-3 with Spain in Alicante. Good riddance 2010 – Reserves keeper Charles Itandje was released. The Frenchman signed from Racing Club de Lens in August 2007, playing seven largely unconvincing games in his first season, being released from his contract in December 2010. -
A great start for the knight 1959 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt scored on his reds debut as we beat Sc***horpe United 2-0 at Anfield, with Jimmy Melia bagging the other. Roger went on to notch 285 times in 492 reds games, a club record until the arrival of Ian Rush. 1961 - We also beat The Iron 2-1 in another Second Division meeting at Anfield thanks to a Derek Hemstead own goal and an Alan A’Court strike. This was our sixth straight win from the start of the season as we went on to clinch the title. A red stalwart moves on 1994 - Ronnie Whelan signed for Southend United, having been released by the reds at the end of the previous season. He had signed from Home Farm for £35,000 in September 1979 and played 493 reds games, netting 73 times and winning six League titles, one European Cup, two FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields. He turned out 35 times for the Shrimpers, netting once, and became Player/Manager the following summer. On the same day, Mark Walters joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan. He struck three times in eleven appearances for Wolves before returning to Anfield. Michael walks free 2009 - Michael Shields was finally released with a royal pardon after four years behind bars for a crime he did not commit in Bulgaria in the aftermath of the Champions League Final in Istanbul. A day of firsts and lasts 2000 - Christian Ziege made his reds bow as a substitute in our 3-2 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield. Jamie Carragher skippered the side for the first time, while Michael Owen netted in his hundredth League game. Mad Dutchman Erik Meijer made his 27th and final appearance for the reds, as Dietmar Hamann scored a very rare brace as City fought back from two goals down before Hamann’s late winner. Ex-World Player of the Year George Weah scored his only League goal for City, with Kevin Horlock converting a spot-kick. 1893 – Winger Patrick Gordon bagged the first of his eight reds goals as we beat Lincoln City 4-0 in a Second Division fixture at Anfield. Left-half James McBride netted a brace with Malcolm McVean also on target. 1944 - Cyril Done was on target in his fourth consecutive reds game as we drew 2-2 with Manchester City at Anfield in a Wartime League match, with Berry Nieuwenhuys also on the scoresheet. 1911 - We were held by the same score in L4, with Jack Parkinson reach a century of League goals for the club and Ronald Orr also on target. Tommy Kelso struck twice from the spot for the Sky Blues. Debuting on the left 1912 - Left-half Joe Dines played his only reds game as we won 2-1 at Chelsea thanks to goals from Arthur Goddard and Tommy Gracie. He was killed on the Western Front in 1918. 1967 - We beat the Blues again, this time 3-1 at Anfield with Tommy Smith converting a penalty and Tony Hateley on the scoresheet twice. Keeper Tommy Lawrence played his 200th League game for the reds. 1933 - Left-back Jack Tennant made his reds bow as we went down 4-2 at Aston Villa, with Gordon Hodgson and Sam English on target. Eric Houghton struck two of his six goals past us for the home side, with Dai Astley bagging the first of his six and Alec Talbot also on target for the Villains. Triple centurion 1905 – Tom Watson took charge of his 300th reds League game as Blackburn Rovers won 3-1 at Anfield. Play was halted after 25 minutes due to torrential rain. Jack Cox put us in front, but an Adam Bowman brace gave the visitors a half-time lead. Bill Davies struck late on. Clem in charge 1978 – Ray Clemence skippered the reds in the absence of Emlyn Hughes as we won 3-0 at Birmingham City thanks to a brace from Graeme Souness and Alan Kennedy’s first reds strike, so apparently becoming the first red to captain the side from between the sticks. Garry Pendrey was sent off for the Blues after half an hour for a second bookable offence. Birth and death 1913 - Keeper Alf Hobson was born in County Durham. He signed from Shildon Colliery in April 1936 and made 28 reds appearances either side of the Second World War, as well as playing 171 wartime games. 2011 – Centre-half Laurie Hughes died. He signed from Tranmere Rovers in February 1943 and made 326 reds appearances, netting just once. He helped us to the first post-war League title and the FA Cup Final three years later and was the first red to appear in the World Cup Finals later that year. Derby despair 2006 - We lost 3-0 at Everton, our biggest derby defeat since September 1964, with Pepe Reina suffering a rare aberration. Tim Cahill opened the scoring with one of his five strikes past us before Andy Johnson added a brace. Heysel shame 1987 - 24 people were charged with involuntary manslaughter relating to the Heysel tragedy and extradited to Belgium. Fourteen people were eventually convicted. In comes Arnold 1970 - Midfielder Steve Arnold signed from Crewe Alexandra for £10,000, but only ever made one first-team appearance before moving to Rochdale in June 1973. His career never really took off, and he retired from the game aged 23. International starts 1980 - Boro’s future reds pairing David Hodgson and Craig Johnston both made their debuts for England Under-21’s as they beat Norway 3-1 in a friendly at The Dell. On the same day, Steve Nicol and future red Glenn Hysén faced each other at the same level in a European Championships qualifier in Degerfors. 1987 - John Barnes and Peter Beardsley both won their first England caps as reds players in a 3-1 friendly defeat to West Germany in Dusseldorf. Digger was winning his 32nd cap overall, while Quasi won his sixteenth. Future reds coach Steve Clarke won his first cap for Scotland in their 2-0 friendly win over Hungary at Hampden Park, with Steve Nicol also featuring. Ronnie Whelan and future red Ray Houghton also both played that fay as the Republic of Ireland beat Luxembourg 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Dublin. 1986 – István Kozma made his senior debut for Hungary in their goalless friendly draw in Norway, with fellow future red Nigel Clough featuring for England Under-21’s in a 1-1 friendly draw in Sweden. 1997 – Forde Kippe made his bow for Norway Under-21’s as they beat Switzerland 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Drammen, with fellow future red Vegard Heggem also in action. 1992 - Future red Paul Ince made his senior England debut in a 1-0 friendly defeat in Spain. Mark Wright and future red Nigel Clough also played. On the same day, Ronnie Rosenthal netted while winning his first cap as a reds player, and 26th to date, as Israel drew 1-1 in a World Cup qualifier in Poland. Also in qualifying action that day were future reds Øyvind Leonhardsen and Jari Litmanen, while Gérard Houllier took charge of France’s 2-0 defeat in Bulgaria and Roy Hodgson led Switzerland to a 3-1 defeat of a Scotland side that included future red Gary McAllister in Bern. 2009 – Sotirios Kyrgiakos won his first cap as a red, and 51st to date for Greece, in their 1-1 World Cup qualifier in Moldova. On the same day, Andriy Voronin won his last cap while at Anfield in Ukraine’s goalless qualifier in Belarus. 2018 - Naby Keïta won his first cap as a reds player, skippering Guinea in their 1-0 defeat of the Central African Republic in an African Cup of Nations qualifier in Conakry. Mick Ferguson had shocked the home side by scoring in the first minute. Happy birthdays 1891 - Forward Fred Pagnam was born in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire. He signed from Blackpool in May 1914, and so could only bag thirty goals in 39 reds games before joining Arsenal in October 1919, with whom he kept up his remarkable strike-rate. 1930 – Right-half Roy Saunders was born in Salford. He was the father of 1990’s reds striker Dean and died in January 2009. 1980 – Michael Beale was born in Bromley, London. He joined the Academy as an Under-15’s coach in 2003, eventually progressing to be in charge of the Under-21’s. He left for São Paulo in January 2017, returning to the reds later that year for a brief spell before joining Steven Gerrard at Rangers. 1988 - Midfielder Ryan Flynn was born in Falkirk. He was awarded with a full-time contract at Melwood in the summer of 2006 having impressed in the previous season’s victorious FA Youth Cup campaign, including notching a goal in the Final. He made a loan move to his hometown club permanent in September 2009. The Bridge opens 1905 - The reds helped Chelsea to open Stamford Bridge, taking part in the first ever game played there. His eight years at Anfield were blighted by injury, but he won three League title medals, and scored sixteen times in his 214 appearances, before moving back north to his boyhood heroes Celtic. In comes Kolo 2013 – Ivorian centre-half Kolo Touré signed on a free transfer after his contract with Manchester City had expired. He notched just once in 71 reds games before moving on to re-join Brendan Rodgers at Celtic in July 2016. 1998 - Steve Staunton re-signed from Aston Villa on a free transfer. He struck once in 58 first-team appearances before returning to Villa Park again in December 2000. Yossi off 2010 - Yossi Benayoun was sold to Chelsea for £5m. He had signed from West Ham United for the same fee three years earlier, bagging 29 goals in 134 reds games, including hat-tricks against Beşiktaş JK, Havant & Waterlooville and Burnley. Red Olympian 1912 - Future reds left-half Joe Dines played in the United Kingdom’s 4-0 Semi-final defeat of Finland at the Olympics in Stockholm. The UK team went on to retain their Olympic title two days later. Old beating new 2020 – We lost our first game as the reigning champions, being thumped 4-0 behind closed doors at the previous winners Manchester City. We had secured the title as a result of City’s defeat at Chelsea exactly a week earlier, so becoming champions with a record seven games still to play. Kevin de Bruyne opened the scoring from the spot with ex-red Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden also on target before the break. The scoring was completed by an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain own goal. Frank departs 2007 - Joint Chief Scout Frank McParland left the club to become General Manager at Bolton Wanderers, although he only remained there three months, and has since returned to the reds’ Academy. He started out in 1995 by assisting John Owens with the Under-14’s. When the Academy opened in 1999, he was handed a full-time role as head of the community coaching department. He returned to Melwood as Director of Academy and Player Development in May 2011, remaining in that role until his departure last November. Didier Drogba’s header, one of his eleven goals past us, ensured a nervous last twenty minutes, but future red Joe Cole blazed over with the Blues’ only real chance of note as we hung on to reach our thirteenth FA Cup Final. En route to gay Paree 1981 - Howard Gayle came on as a substitute for the injured Kenny Dalglish after just nine minutes and ran the Bayern München defence ragged, before later himself being substituted by Jimmy Case. He signed for the reds in May 1973 but only made four senior appearances as his route to the first-team was blocked first by Alec Lindsay, then Joey Jones and Alan Kennedy, and he moved to Wigan Athletic in August 1980. 1983 – Former Finnish reserves striker Daniel Sjölund was born in Marieham. He never made the first team after arriving Anfield from West Ham United in November 2000 as part of the deal that took Rigobert Song in the opposite direction, moving on to Swedish side Djurgårdens IF in January 2004. 1993 - Midfielder Craig Roddan was born in Fazakerley. He joined the Academy from Wigan Athletic in 2007 but was released in the summer of 2014. 2001 – Centre-back Morgan Boyes was born in Chester. John Arne Riise was playing in his hundredth reds game, while Milan Baroš suffered the rare indignity of coming on from the bench and then later himself being substituted. Happy birthdays 1924 - Centre-half Laurie Hughes was born in Liverpool, just off Everton Road. He signed from Tranmere Rovers in February 1943 and made 326 reds appearances, netting just once. He was sold to Dallas Tornado for £18,000 on his 23rd birthday, playing there for five years before moving to indoor side Wichita Wings. He retired from playing in 1990 and was last heard of coaching youth soccer and working in Wichita, Kansas. 1892 - Full-back William Jenkinson was born in Golborne, Lancashire. He signed from South Liverpool in 1916 but only played thirteen times before moving to Wigan Borough in June 1921. 1989 – Ex-reserves midfielder Ray Putterill was born in Liverpool. He starred in the victorious 2007 FA Youth Cup campaign and started training at Melwood later that summer. To and fro with the Toffees 1934 – Forward Tosh Johnson signed from Everton, with whom he had won the League and FA Cup. However, he was past his best by the time he arrived at Anfield. He played 38 times for us, notching eight times before joining Darwen in August 1936. 1927 – Inside-left Dick Forshaw was sold to Everton for £3,750. He won two League titles after joining the reds in July 1919, scoring an impressive 124 times in 288 games. He has the unique honour of being the only player ever to claim League championship medals with both Merseyside clubs, helping the Blues to the title in his first full season across the park. 1922 – Welsh forward Billy Matthews moved on to Bristol City. He signed from Hibernian in May 1896 after a loan spell, netting three times in 27 reds games before joining Rangers in April 1897, with whom he won the League and Cup. 1912 - Forward Billy Lacey made his reds bow in a 1-1 League draw at home to Middlesbrough, with Tom Miller grabbing our goal, his first of 56 for the club. European Cup defeats 1977 - We lost 1-0 at Saint-Étienne in the Third Round first leg, but of course famously fought back to qualify for the Semi-finals in the Anfield return. David James replaced him for the final minute, so beginning a run of 213 consecutive reds appearances. Ian Rush made his 400th League appearance for the reds that day. 1997 - We faced Leeds again, with Stan Collymore bagging a brace as we won 4-0 at Anfield, as Jamie Redknapp and Robbie Fowler also got on the scoresheet. Stan’s first goal was our 300th in the Premier League. First time at Old Trafford 1910 - We played in the first ever match at Manchester United’s new ground, Old Trafford, spoiling the party by running out 4-3 winners to secure our first ever away victory against them. United’s Sandy Turnbull struck one of his five goals against the reds with Tom Homer also on target for the home side before the break. Arthur Goddard pulled a goal back after half-time before George Wall restored United’s two-goal cushion with one of his ten strikes past us. Goddard struck again, his fiftieth League goal for the reds, before a brace from Jimmy Stewart handed us victory. Dick departs 1925 – Centre-forward Dick Johnson was sold to Stoke after thirty goals in 82 outings, including two hat-tricks, since arriving in January 1920. He helped us to the League title in 1923 and was noted for his overhead bicycle kicks. Trigger at Wembley 1992 - Rob Jones made his full England debut in a 2-0 victory over France at Wembley, winning the first of his eight international caps. Mark Wright also played, winning his first cap as a red, with future red Nigel Clough also in the line-up. On the same day, Dean Saunders and ex-reds John Aldridge and Kevin Sheedy all played in the only full international ever played at the Royal Dublin Society, as Wales beat the Republic of Ireland 1-0. FA Cup memories Of our four other FA Cup ties on this day over the years, we have only won one, although this was a handsome victory. 1968 - Striker Tony Hateley grabbed four goals in our 5-2 Fourth Round replay win over Walsall at Anfield, with Geoff Strong also on the scoresheet and Tommy Watson nabbing a brace for the visitors. It was such a foggy evening that the Kop had to chant for those in the Anny Road to tell them who had scored down that end! Down from the seaside We have twice entertained Blackpool in First Division matches on this day in history. 1949 - We were held to a 1-1 draw when Jack Balmer grabbed our goal. Happy birthday Thommo 1954 - Phil Thompson was born in Kensington, Liverpool. He notched thirteen times in 477 games for the reds, many as skipper, as we won two European Cups, seven League titles, the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, two League Cups and five FA Charity Shields. He later had two separate spells on the backroom staff, under Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Gérard Houllier, and is now working in the media. 1906 - Forward Harry Barkas was born in Wardley Colliery. He only played five reds games, all in the First Division, after arriving for £1,500 from Gateshead in December 1930, returning there in 1932. Martin’s bow 2008 - Centre-back Martin Škrtel made his reds debut as a substitute for the injured Álvaro Arbeloa in our 2-2 home draw with Aston Villa, our fourth successive tie in the League. Other birthdays 1961 - Former reserves forward Colin Russell was born in Liverpool. He only ever tasted half an hour of first team action for the reds, coming on for Howard Gayle in a home League defeat to Sunderland in May 1981. He left for Huddersfield Town in 1982. 1904 - Scottish international right-half Tom Morrison was born in Coylton, Ayrshire. He signed from St. Mirren in February 1928 for £4,000 and struck four times in 254 reds games. He failed to win any honours during his spell at Anfield but had won the Scottish Cup with St. Mirren before joining the reds. He was a member of the Sunderland team that won the League title in 1936, having moved to Wearside in November 1935. On the same day, Jari Litmanen was making his 99th appearance for Finland as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Saudi Arabia in a tournament in Riyadh, in what was Roy Hodgson’s first game in charge of the Finns. 2010 – Song also represented his country, as they drew 2-2 with Tunisia in a MTN Africa Cup of Nations group game in Angola. 2017 – Future red Mohamed Salah played for Egypt as they beat Uganda 1-0 in a group game in Gabon. He signed from Crewe Alexandra for £12,000 in September 1970 but only ever made two first-team appearances before moving to Rochdale in June 1973. Stevie’s ton up 2015 - James Shea became the hundredth different goalkeeper that Steven Gerrard scored past for the reds as we beat AFC Wimbledon 2-1 in an FA Cup Third Round tie at the Cherry Red Records Stadium. The skipper was on target either side of the break against the League Two side. Pelle signs on 2005 - Argentine centre-back Mauricio Pellegrino signed from Valencia on a free transfer. He arrived at Anfield with an impressive reputation, having previously won the Spanish League three times and the UEFA Cup, as well as appearing in two Champions League Finals. However, he rarely impressed in his thirteen reds games, and moved on to Deportivo Alavés five months later. FA Cup shocks 1957 - Half-back Johnny Wheeler scored, but it was not enough to prevent us losing 2-1 to Southend United from the Third Division South at Roots Hall in the Third Round. 1974 - Doncaster Rovers’ Brendan O’Callaghan hit the woodwork in the final minute of our Third Round tie against the Third Division side at Anfield, to keep the scores level at 2-2. Kevin Keegan bagged both our goals, with defender Dave Rylands playing his only game for the club and midfielder Trevor Storton appearing for the twelfth and last time. We won the replay 2-0 and went on to claim the trophy that season. A Cup treble 1980 - David Johnson grabbed a treble that included his fiftieth reds strike as we thumped Grimsby Town 5-0 at Anfield, with Graeme Souness and Jimmy Case also on target. The Mariners went on to claim the Third Division title that season. We fell at the Semi-final stage for the second successive season. Beating the Villains 1985 – We beat Aston Villa 3-0 in the FA Cup Third Round at Anfield, with a John Wark strike sandwiched between two from Ian Rush. This was Joe Fagan’s hundredth game in charge. 1929 – We won a top-flight encounter 4-0 in L4, when Dick Edmed bagged a brace, with Bob Clark and Gordon Hodgson also on target. Villa’s Thomas Smart sent a penalty high over the bar. Red deaths 2004 - Jim Aspinall died aged 72. He had been involved in youth recruitment at Anfield for 26 years, during which time he had unearthed talents such as Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman. Fowler visited him in hospital but was minutes too late as he had already passed away. 1965 – Scottish forward Bill Salisbury died. He signed from Partick Thistle in October 1928, bagging three goals in seventeen games before joining Bangor City the following August. Out of the Cup 1991 - Glenn Hysén was sent off as we were held 1-1 by Blackburn Rovers in our FA Cup Third Round meeting at Ewood Park, with Rovers having Kevin Moran shown a red card as well. A Mark Atkins own goal with just ten seconds left on the clock took the tie to an Anfield replay, which we won 3-0 with Steve McMahon dismissed this time around. A goalscoring debut 1955 - Jimmy Melia scored a left-foot volley in front of the Kop on his reds bow as we thumped Nottingham Forest 5-2 in a Second Division fixture. Debut strikes 2014 - We beat Bournemouth 3-1 in a Capital One Cup Fifth Round tie at their Goldsands Stadium, thanks to a Raheem Sterling brace and Lazar Marković’s first reds goal, with ex-Evertonian Dan Gosling on target for the home side. 2017 – We beat Bournemouth 4-0 at the renamed Vitality Stadium, with Philippe Coutinho, Dejan Lovren and Mohamed Salah all on target before the break. Roberto Firmino completed the scoring. 1997 - Michael Owen won his only Under-21’s cap, netting in England’s 4-2 play-off defeat of Greece at Carrow Road, with strike partner and future red Emile Heskey bagging a brace. Jamie Carragher also played. Unfortunately, the Greeks qualified for the European Championships Finals, 4-4 on the away goals rule. Joy against the Baggies 1932 - Gordon Hodgson and Harold Barton scored as we beat West Bromwich Albion 2-0 at Anfield. 1898 - We also entertained the Baggies, when Hugh Morgan and Johnny Walker were on the scoresheet as we drew 2-2. Signing on 1919 - David Ashworth was appointed as Manager. He had previously guided Oldham Athletic from non-League into the top flight, to whom he returned in December 1922 with the reds en route to retaining the League title he had led them to the previous season. 1953 – Left-half Geoff Twentyman signed from his hometown club Carlisle United for £10,000. He netted nineteen times in 184 reds games, moving on to Ballymena United in March 1960. He returned to Anfield as Chief Scout in 1967, a post he held for nineteen years, helping to bring players such as Ray Clemence, Alan Hansen, Steve Heighway, Phil Neal and Ian Rush to the club. He died aged 74 in February 2004. Red farewells 1910 - Left-half Jim Bradley played his 185th and final reds game, as goals from Jack Parkinson and Jimmy Stewart handed us a 2-0 home win over Sheffield United as keeper Sam Hardy saved a penalty from Joe Kitchen. In fact, Bradley’s last three reds games were against the two Sheffield clubs! 1988 – Norwich City won 1-0 at Anfield thanks to a goal from Andy Townsend as midfielder Nigel Spackman appeared for the 63rd and final time. 1953 - Forward Sam Raybould died. He signed from New Brighton Tower in January 1900 for £250, scoring 130 times in 226 reds games and helping us to claim two League titles before moving on to Sunderland in May 1907. Mixed fortunes on Wearside 1938 - We won 3-2 at Roker Park thanks to goals from Bill Kinghorn and Phil Taylor and wing-half Tom Bush’s only reds strike as outside-right Berry Nieuwenhuys played his 200th League game for us. 1949 - Ken Brierley and Cyril Done netted as Sunderland beat us by the same score in another First Division encounter as centre-half Laurie Hughes played his hundredth reds game. Len Shackleton bagged the first of his five goals against the reds, with Harry Kirtley and Tommy Reynolds also on the scoresheet. Parson off the mark 1927 – Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson scored the first of his two reds strikes as we lost 3-1 at Tottenham Hotspur. Frank Osborne bagged the last of his four goals past us with Jack Elkes nabbing the first two of his four against the reds. Thumping the Magpies 1983 - Graeme Souness bagged a brace, including one from the spot, as we beat Notts County 5-0 at Anfield. Steve Nicol and Ian Rush were also on target, with David Hunt putting through his own net. Other reds games 1977 – Phil Neal netted the only goal of Queens Park Rangers’ visit to L4 from the spot. 1960 – We drew a Second Division fixture 2-2 at Leeds United, with Kevin Lewis and Tommy Leishman on the scoresheet. Billy Bremner bagged the first of his five goals against the reds, with Tommy Murray also scoring. 1904 – We beat Bristol City 3-1 in a Second Division encounter at Anfield. A Fox once more 1987 - Kevin MacDonald joined his old club Leicester City on loan as he continued his comeback from a broken leg suffered in September 1986. Vlad’s Arabian night 1997 - Future red Vladimír Šmicer bagged a treble in the Czech Republic’s 6-1 thumping of the United Arab Emirates in a Confederations Cup game in Saudi Arabia. On the move 2013 – Former reserves right-winger Toni Silva signed for CSKA Sofia, having been released by Barnsley six months previously. 2020 – Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai signed for RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. from Red Bull Salzburg. He scored twenty goals in 91 games while helping Die Roten Bullen to clinch the DFB-Pokal twice. Scots in action 1975 - Ex-reds reserves striker Ted MacDougall won his seventh and final cap for Scotland as a substitute in their 1-1 European Championships qualifying draw with Romania at Hampden Park. Future red Kenny Dalglish also played. 2003 - Robbie Foy won his only cap for Scotland Under-20’s as they won 2-1 in Portugal in a friendly. 2015 – Future red Ozan Kabak skippered Turkey Under-16’s in their 2-1 friendly defeat of North Macedonia in Side. -
Beating the Geordies 2007 - Steven Gerrard, Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel were all on target as we won 3-0 at Newcastle United, with the visiting fans taunting troubled Toon boss Sam Allardyce, whose days were numbered at the club. Fernando Torres missed a host of golden chances, with boss Rafael Benítez further riling the club’s American owners by choosing to wear a track-suit, following on from his repeated statements in a pre-match press conference that “as always I am focused on training and coaching my team”. Alisson Becker captained the side for the first time as we beat Porto 2-0 in a group stage game at Anfield, thanks to second-half strikes from Thiago Alcântara and Salah. 2009 – We beat Debreceni VSC at the Stadion Puskás Ferenc in Budapest. David N’Gog bagged the only goal of the game inside the first five minutes as we failed to reach the knock-out stages of the Champions League due to the other result in our group. 1998 - We were on our way out of the UEFA Cup as we lost 3-1 at Celta de Vigo in our Third Round first leg tie, after Michael Owen had opened the scoring. We were unable to turn things round in the second leg, which we also lost, 1-0. Current reds forward Iago Aspas was apparently a ball-boy in the away leg. Bon anniversaire 1947 – Former First-team coach Jacques Crevoisier was born in Delle, France. He worked under Gérard Houllier for two years after the departure of Patrice Bergues. Running riot against the Hornets 1987 - We beat Watford 4-0 at Anfield to return to the top of the table, with Steve McMahon, Ray Houghton, John Aldridge and John Barnes all on the scoresheet. 2018 – We won 3-0 at Vicarage Road, despite skipper Jordan Henderson being dismissed late on. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring before Trent Alexander-Arnold converted a free-kick, with Roberto Firmino tapping in the third. Reds centurions 1979 – Kenny Dalglish played his hundredth League game for the reds as we held Arsenal to a goalless draw at Highbury. 1956 – Centre-half Laurie Hughes played his 300th reds game as we drew 1-1 with Swansea Town in a Second Division meeting at Vetch Field. Alan Arnell struck our goal. He netted just once in 53 first-team appearances leading up to the First World War after signing from Airdrieonians for £80 in April 1909, including one in goal in only his second game! Management moves 1994 - John Toshack was sacked as Manager of Real Sociedad for the second time after three years with the club. 2008 - Brendan Rodgers was appointed Manager of Watford, leaving his coaching role at Chelsea. He led them to thirteen victories in his 32 games in charge, before moving to Reading the following June. 2022 – Dirk Kuyt was sacked as Head Coach of ADO Den Haag, after just five months in charge. Out on loan 2010 – Keeper Chris Kirkland joined Leicester City on loan from Wigan Athletic, playing just three times for the Foxes. On the same day, Tony Warner was released by Sc***horpe United after making just two first-team appearances. 2005 - Second string centre-back Zak Whitbread moved to Millwall on loan. He played 27 times before signing permanently seven months later. He signed from Sevilla for £6.8m in June 2013, making twelve senior appearances in his first campaign before returning to his homeland on loan for the next two seasons, moving on to sold to S.S. Lazio for €4m in August 2016. 2003 – Polish keeper Fabian Mrozek was born in Wrocław. He joined the Academy in August 2020, signing pro terms the following July. European records 1976 - We registered our then record equal away win in Europe, thumping Northern Irish champions Crusaders 5-0 in our First Round match to go through 7-0 on aggregate, en route to our first European Cup win. He became a Director at the end of the First World War, and then managed the club for five years during the 1920’s, helping us to retain the League title in 1923. 1915 - Inside-right John Tosswill died in the Eastbourne Military Hospital after an illness, aged just 24. He signed from Queens Park Rangers in June 1912, scoring once in eleven outings before joining Southend United in August 1913. He netted six goals in 35 outings in two seasons at Craven Cottage, as his career wound to an end. 1983 - Reserves forward Mike Newell joined Crewe Alexandra on a free transfer, having failed to break into the first team at Anfield. Wartime scorers 1940 - Denis Westcott nabbed his first reds goals, scoring both in our 2-0 win at Chester’s Moss Road Ground in a Wartime League game. 1918 - Inside-forward Harry Lewis scored in his fourth consecutive game as we won a Wartime League game at Preston North End 2-0. Thomas Bennett netted the other goal. Ex-reds keepers in opposition 2003 - Two ex-reds custodians, David James and Tony Warner, played against each other as West Ham United drew 1-1 with Millwall in a First Division fixture at Upton Park. 2012 - David James signed for Bournemouth. He stayed until the following March, playing nineteen times for the Cherries. 2015 – Keeper Lawrence Vigouroux had his loan spell terminated by Swindon Town for paying a £50 fine in pennies, although he was reinstated after he apologised. Other reds games 1991 – Ray Houghton netted as Sheffield Wednesday held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. 1988 – Gary Gillespie bagged the only goal of Walsall’s visit in the first leg of our League Cup Second Round tie. Youngsters in action 2006 - Michael Collins netted for the Republic of Ireland Under-17’s, playing alongside Laurence Gaughan and Shane O'Connor as they beat Latvia 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Azerbaijan. 2012 – Brad Smith won his first cap for England Under-19’s in their 6-0 trouncing of the Faroe Islands in a European Championships qualifier in Tallinn. 2013 – Harry Wilson bagged a brace for Wales Under-17’s in their 3-0 European Championships qualifying defeat of Slovenia in Slovakia. 1994 - Future red Haukur Ingi Guðnason featured for Iceland Under-17’s in their 1-0 defeat by Finland in a European Championships qualifier. 2016 – Rhian Brewster grabbed a treble for England Under-17’s as they thumped Croatia 5-0 in a friendly in Pula, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. Goalscoring feats at St. James’ Park 1987 - Steve Nicol grabbed a hat-trick in our 4-1 win at Newcastle United in front of the live TV cameras, following John Aldridge’s opener, who also had another strike disallowed for offside. Neil McDonald converted from the spot for the home side. 1961 - Right-half Gordon Milne scored his first reds goal to help us to a 2-1 Second Division win there, with our other score coming from a George Heslop own goal. Kevin Lewis had a penalty saved by United keeper Dave Hollins, while centre-half Dick White played his 200th game for the club. Dirk off the mark 2006 - Dirk Kuyt grabbed his first reds goal, and 150th career strike to date, which was also our fiftieth Premier League strike against Newcastle United. We won 2-0 at Anfield, with Luis García playing his hundredth reds game. Xabi Alonso spectacularly scored from inside his own half, the second time he had managed that feat for the reds that year. Quick-fire Billy 1958 - Billy Liddell scored after sixteen seconds, with Ronnie Moran putting through his own net to level the score at Bristol City in our Second Division meeting. He added another in the second half, with wing-half Bobby Campbell grabbing the first of his two reds goals as we won 3-1. This was Liddell’s third brace in six games. Barney Rubble departs 1985 - Left-back Alan Kennedy was sold to Sunderland for £100,000. He is best remembered for his winning strikes in two European Cup Finals, but also won five League titles, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields after moving from Newcastle United for £330,000 in August 1978, netting twenty times in 359 appearances. He moved on to Clapton Orient in July 1933. 2003 – Midfielder James Balagizi was born in Manchester. He signed pro terms in September 2020, having joined as an Under-11 from Manchester City. A wise move 2012 – Defender Andre Wisdom netted his only goal for the club on his reds bow as we won our UEFA Europa League group game 5-3 at BSC Young Boys, with winger Oussama Assaidi and midfielder Suso also debuting. Juhani Ojala scored an own goal after just three minutes, with Wisdom nodding us back in front after an equaliser from Raphael Nuzzolo. Ojala and then Gonzalo Zárate struck after the break to turn the game around, before Sebastián Coates headed us level, with substitute Jonjo Shelvey bagging a brace to secure victory. Thiago’s bow 2020 - Thiago Alcântara debuted as we won 2-0 behind closed doors at Chelsea, with Andreas Christensen sent off for the home side on the stroke of half time. He arrived from West Bromwich Albion’s Academy aged fourteen in the summer of 2011, becoming our youngest ever player in September 2012, aged sixteen years and six days, when he featured in a League Cup Third Round tie at his old club. He eventually struck once in five senior appearances before he moved to Watford for £4m in June 2016. Out-foxed again 2003 - Michael Owen netted from the spot before Emile Heskey struck the winner against his old club Leicester City at Anfield for the third consecutive season as we won 2-1, with Marcus Bent bagging a very late consolation for the visitors. Disappointment at The Dell 1986 - Kevin MacDonald broke his leg shortly after coming on as a substitute as we lost 2-1 at Southampton, with Steve McMahon equalising after David Armstrong opened the scoring with the last of his four goals against the reds. Beattie beaten 1983 - Andy Beattie died, aged seventy. He guested for the reds at full-back during the Second World War, and later spent some time on our backroom staff. Young Englanders 1983 - Future red Paul Walsh grabbed a brace as England Under-21’s beat their Danish counterparts 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier at Carrow Road. The Aussie battler arrived from Middlesbrough for a club record £650,000 fee in April 1981 and grabbed forty goals, including one in the 1986 FA Cup Final, in 271 reds games. He won the European Cup, five League titles, the FA Cup and two League Cups in his time at Anfield. 1973 - Jamie Redknapp was born in Barton-on-Sea, Hampshire. He struck 41 times in his 308 first-team appearances after signing from Bournemouth in June 1990. Although he only won one winners’ medal in his time at Anfield, the Coca Cola Cup in 1995, he was a popular member of the squad, and was club captain during the historic treble season of 2000/01, going up to lift the FA Cup at the Millennium Stadium with Robbie Fowler. He retired from the game in June 2005 after brief spells with Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton and is now a regular on Sky Sports. 2001 – Forward Bobby Duncan was born in Whiston. He joined from Manchester City in August 2018, moving on to Fiorentina for €2m thirteen months later. 1927 - Keeper Russell Crossley was born in Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire. He joined the reds from Army football twenty years later, but made just 73 appearances in his seven seasons at Anfield. 1906 - Outside-right Danny McRorie was born in Glasgow. Departures 1934 - Legendary keeper Elisha Scott left Anfield to become Player/Manager for Belfast Celtic, after 22 years with the club. He had arrived at Liverpool after being rejected by Everton for being too small and went on to play 468 times for the reds, winning the League title in 1922 and 1923. During those two seasons he only conceded 61 goals in 81 games. On the same day, Brad Friedel kept goal as the USA lost 1-0 to Yugoslavia in Nantes, to finish bottom of the same section. 1995 - Friedel also played for his country in a goalless US Cup draw with Colombia in Piscataway. Sander for Holland 2000 - Sander Westerveld won his fifth full international cap as the Netherlands thrashed FR Yugoslavia 6-1 in Rotterdam to reach the Euro 2000 Semi-final with future red Bolo Zenden also in action. He came on for Edwin van der Sar with 25 minutes remaining, but was unable to preserve the Dutch clean sheet. On the same day, future red Nicolas Anelka came off the bench as France beat Spain 2-1 in Brugge to also reach the Semi-final. 2016 – Joe Allen played as Wales beat Northern Ireland 1-0 in Paris to reach the Quarter-finals. On the same day, Xherdan Shaqiri bagged his first goal as a Stoke City player, also scoring in the penalty shoot-out as Switzerland lost to Poland in St. Étienne. Peter’s bow 1966 – Future red Peter Cormack made his debut for Scotland in their 1-1 friendly draw with Brazil at Hampden Park. Managerial ins and outs 1984 - 1950’s centre-half Keith Burkinshaw resigned as Manager of Tottenham Hotspur after eight years in charge, during which time he had led them to two FA Cups and the UEFA Cup, as well as signing two World champions in Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricky Villa. He left in the aftermath of Spurs’ stock market flotation. 2007 - Paul Ince was named as MK Dons boss, having resigned from Macclesfield Town a day before. He led them to the Football League Trophy and League Two title before being poached by Blackburn Rovers after one year in Milton Keynes, later returning for another season in 2009/10. 1997 - John Toshack was appointed Manager of Turkish side Beşiktaş JK. He remained there for twenty months before returning to Real Madrid. 2006 – Academy Manager Alex Inglethorpe resigned as Manager of Exeter City to join Tottenham Hotspur’s coaching staff, having been in charge since October 2004. On the move 2001 - Craig Bellamy signed for Newcastle United from Coventry City for £6m, after eight goals in 39 games for the Sky Blues. He struck 43 times in 128 outings for the Geordies before joining Celtic on loan in January 2005. 1999 - Ex-reserves forward Mike Newell joined Conference side Doncaster Rovers from Crewe Alexandra on a free transfer. Young scouse midfielder Liam Coyle signed a new contract with the reds on the same day. 2022 – Ex-reds reserves forward Taiwo Awoniyi joined Nottingham Forest for a club record reported £17m from Union Berlin after 25 goals in 65 games for Die Eisernen. Youngster honoured 2001 - Reds starlet David Raven was one of four youngsters chosen to join the PFA/Adidas Platinum group, an initiative aimed at nurturing the best young talent in the country. Previous beneficiaries of this scheme had included future red Jermaine Pennant. Also in international action 2017 – Emre Can played in a Confederations Cup group game in Russia as Germany beat Cameroon 3-1. 2019 – Ex-red Toni Silva played for Guinea-Bissau in their 2-0 Africa Cup of Nations Finals defeat to Cameroon in Egypt. 2022 - Luke Chambers and Jarell Quansah both played for England Under-19’s as they beat Israel 1-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Slovakia. -
A record for Rushie 1992 - Ian Rush scored his first ever goal at Old Trafford to put us 2-0 up following Don Hutchinson’s opener. It was his 287th reds goal in all competitions, breaking Roger Hunt’s club record. However, the game ended all square after Mark Hughes’ second-half brace, two of his nine goals past us. Rushie went on to bag a total of 346 goals for the reds. Four for Forshaw for sure 1924 - Dick Forshaw struck all our goals in a 4-1 defeat of Sheffield United at Anfield, with left-half Tom Bromilow playing his 200th reds game. Billy Gillespie struck the last of his seven goals against the reds as centre-half Billy McDevitt appeared for the reds for the fourth and final time. Dirk at the treble 2008 – Dirk Kuyt netted in his third consecutive reds game as we came from behind to beat Wigan Athletic 3-2. Daniel Agger’s calamitous error handed Amir Zaki the chance to net the first of his two goals. Kuyt equalised before Zaki restored the Latics’ lead. Antonia Valencia was sent off for the visitors before substitute Albert Riera equalised with his first reds strike. Kuyt then bagged a late winner. Liddell dropped 1958 - The Liverpool Echo reported that Billy Liddell was dropped for the first time, when he was left out of our 1-0 Second Division win at Fulham. Louis Bimpson netted our late winner. Joey returns 1978 – Joey Jones was sold back to Wrexham for £210,000, so tripling their record transfer fee. He had signed from the Robins for £110,000 in July 1975 and made exactly a century of reds appearances, bagging three goals and helping us to win a European Cup, two League titles and the FA Charity Shield in his time at Anfield. Asa Hartford and Joe McBride netted for the Blues. Chelsea at the double 1919 - We were beaten 1-0 by Chelsea at Anfield, who completed their first ever League double over us, a week after winning by the same score at Stamford Bridge. John Miller made the first of his eight reds appearances in this game, while half-back Harry Lowe turned out for the 136th and last time. 1913 - We also lost to the Blues, going down 3-0 in West London. Harold Halse scored one of his four goals against us, with Harry Ford and Billy Bridgeman also on target. Two ton George 1947 – Jack Balmer was on target as we drew 1-1 at Huddersfield Town. Left-back Barney Ramsden put through his own net in what was George Kay’s 200th game in charge. Crouchie to the rescue 2006 - Peter Crouch headed the only goal of the game as we won at Girondins de Bordeaux in the group stage of the Champions League. Ex-red Vladimír Šmicer had to sit out the game through injury. Liddell for the Scots 1952 - Billy Liddell was on target in Scotland’s 2-1 defeat of Wales at Ninian Park in the British International Championships. International debutants 1947 - Phil Taylor won his first cap for England as they beat Wales 2-0 in the British International Championships in Cardiff. Clubmates Ray Lambert and Cyril Sidlow were both on the losing side. 1988 - Future red David Burrows won his first Under-21’s cap as England were held to a 1-1 draw by Sweden in a friendly at Highfield Road. This was the first of his seven caps at this level, and only one as a West Bromwich Albion player. Up for the golden ball 2009 - Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres were both nominated for the prestigious Ballon d’Or award by France Football magazine. Barcelona’s Lionel Messi eventually claimed the honour, with the reds duo finishing in ninth and eleventh, respectively. John’s farewell 1902 – Forward John Davies played his tenth and final reds game as we lost 2-0 at home to Notts County in a top-flight encounter. Albert Green bagged the first of his four goals against the reds late on, with William Ross also scoring. Paddy against 2003 – Ex-reds midfielder Patrik Berger bagged the only goal of the game early on at Fratton Park as we lost a Premiership meeting with Portsmouth. For Omagh 1999 - A benefit match was staged in Omagh in memory of the victims of an IRA bomb. A reds side beat Omagh Town 7-1 with Titi Camara and Erik Meijer both netting braces, and Vladimír Šmicer, Patrik Berger and Jamie Redknapp also on target. More big wins 1941 - We thumped Stockport County 6-1 at Anfield in a Wartime League match, with Cyril Done and Dicky Dorsett netting twice apiece, and George Ainsley and Billy Liddell also on target. 1986 - We beat Oxford United 4-0 at home in a top-flight fixture, with Ian Rush nabbing a brace, to add to a Kenny Dalglish strike and a Jan Mølby penalty. Coaching birthdays 1978 – Recent Under-18’s and Under-23’s Coach Neil Critchley was born in Crewe. He joined the reds from his hometown club in September 2013, where he had been Academy Director since 2007. He moved on to be Head Coach of Blackpool in March 2020. 1942 – Former first-team coach Mike Kelly was born in Northampton. He had been Roy Hodgson’s assistant at Fulham, following him to Anfield for his unsuccessful spell as reds boss. Signing on 2002 - Jerzy Dudek signed a one-year extension to his contract, tying him to the club until July 2007, when he moved on to Real Madrid after helping us to claim the European Cup and League Cup in his 186 games during his Anfield spell. 2019 – Centre-half Joël Matip signed a new contract. He has netted six times in 123 reds games across his first five seasons, helping us to claim the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup. 1937 – Winger Harman van den Berg signed for the reds from Peninsular in his native South Africa. Claiming another trophy 1961 - We clinched the Floodlight Challenge Cup for the third and final time, following a 2-2 draw at Goodison, with Ian St. John and Roger Hunt netting. We had won the first leg 3-1 at Anfield a year earlier. Other reds games 1975 – We were held to a goalless draw at Coventry City. 1969 – Bobby Graham and substitute Alec Lindsay netted as we drew 2-2 at Ipswich Town. 1952 – Aston Villa won 2-0 at Anfield as Laurie Hughes scored an own goal, with Ken Roberts also on target. 1930 – We beat Leeds United 2-0 in L4 as Gordon Hodgson struck twice in the opening ten minutes. Management moves 2009 – Ex-reds reserves forward Mike Newell was sacked as Manager of Grimsby Town, having been in charge for a year. He was dismissed having only led the Mariners to ten points in their opening thirteen League games, after saving them from relegation from the Football League the previous season. 2004 - Future Academy Manager Alex Inglethorpe was appointed Manager of Exeter City, leading them to 44 victories in 89 games in charge before moving to Tottenham Hotspur’s coaching staff in June 2006.
