Souey the skipper 1982 - Graeme Souness captained Liverpool for the first time, leading us to an impressive 4-0 win at John Toshack’s Swansea City in the Third Round of the FA Cup. Phil Thompson had been stripped of the captaincy following our Boxing Day defeat to Manchester City that left the reds twelfth in the table. Alan Hansen scored in his 200th reds game with Ian Rush bagging a brace and Mark Lawrenson also on target. On the same day, ex-red Ian Callaghan played in his 88th FA Cup game as Crewe Alexandra lost 3-1 at home to Sc***horpe United, with 79 of these games played while with Liverpool. Stevie on his way out 2015 - Steven Gerrard announced he would be leaving the club at the end of the season. He made 710 appearances for the reds in total, notching 186 goals, helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups and three League Cups as well as winning the PFA and Football Writers’ Player of the Year awards once apiece. 2018 – Pepijn Lijnders left the coaching staff to take over as Manager of N.E.C. in the Netherlands. He was sacked four months later, returning to Melwood as Assistant Manager in June 2018. 1936 – Left-back Jack Tennant moved on to Bolton Wanderers. He had arrived at Anfield from Torquay United in May 1933, appearing 42 times without notching, later guesting with the reds during the war. Swapping right backs 2006 - Josemi joined Villarreal in exchange for Jan Kromkamp. Josemi was Rafael Benítez’s first signing, joining us from Málaga for £2m in July 2004, but made just 35 reds appearances. Kromkamp only stayed with the club for eight months, playing eighteen times, including a substitute appearance as we won the FA Cup later that year. A fab century 2022 – Fabinho played his hundredth League game for the reds in our 2-2 draw at Chelsea. Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah put us two goals ahead, but Mateo Kovačić and Christian Pulisic both struck before the break to level the scores. Jürgen Klopp and Alisson Becker both missed the game due to suspected positive COVID tests. Running down the wing 1981 – Argentine winger Maxi Rodríguez was born in Rosario, Santa Fe. He bagged seventeen goals in 73 reds outings after signing for free from Club Atlético de Madrid in January 2010, returning to his native land to re-join Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys in July 2012. Also in the Cup 1971 - We beat Aldershot 1-0 in the FA Cup Third Round at Anfield, who were then 92nd in the League and managed by ex-red Jimmy Melia, with John McLaughlin grabbing the only goal, his last for the reds. Emlyn Hughes played his 200th reds game that day. The final Ox 2023 - We lost 3-1 at Brentford as Ibrahima Konaté put through his own net with Yoane Wissa also on target in the first half. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Came off the bench to net his eighteenth and final goal for the club shortly after the break, but Bryan Mbeumo completed the scoring late on. Also recently 2020 – We beat Sheffield United 2-0 at Anfield to maintain a thirteen-point lead at the top of the table, with Mohamed Salah on target early on. Sadio Mané scored after the break to ensure we went a full year unbeaten in the Premier League. On the same day, Alisson Becker was named as the winner of the Samba d'Or for 2019, given to the best Brazilian playing in Europe, the first keeper to win this award. 2017 – We drew 2-2 at Sunderland as we took the lead twice through Daniel Sturridge and Sadio Mané, but Jermain Defoe levelled twice from the spot, the last of his six strikes past us. 2016 – We lost 2-0 at West Ham United, thanks to headed goals from Michail Antonio, one of his five past us, and ex-red Andy Carroll. 2008 - We succumbed to a late Titus Bramble strike as Wigan Athletic scored their first ever League goal against us to secure their first point against any of the ‘big four’ in 21 attempts, cancelling out a Fernando Torres effort, his sixteenth goal of the season. This was the sixth time that Steve Bruce had led a side against us in the Premier League, and he had yet to taste defeat in these fixtures. 1995 - We thumped Norwich City 4-0 at home to bring us to a maximum twelve points over the festive period, thanks to goals from Ian Rush, John Scales and a Robbie Fowler brace. On the same day, future red Haukur Ingi Guðnason played for Iceland Under-17’s as they beat the host nation 2-1 in the Israel Tournament. 1996 – Guðnason played for the Under-19’s as they lost 5-1 to Hungary in the same tournament. 2006 - We drew 2-2 with Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium, failing to equal a club record eleven consecutive League victories. Steven Gerrard converted a penalty with Luis García grabbing our second equaliser, with Radhi Jaidi and ex-red El-Hadji Diouf on target for the home side. 1954 - We also faced the Trotters with John Evans netting the first of his 53 reds goals in the second minute as we lost 2-1 in a First Division fixture at Anfield, their most recent League victory in L4. Willie Moir bagged one of his five goals past us, with Dennis Stevens also scoring. Kewley’s moment in the spotlight 1978 - Local forward Kevin Kewley made his one and only appearance in the reds first team when he came on as a substitute for Terry McDermott in our 2-0 defeat of Middlesbrough. Goals from David Johnson and Steve Heighway secured the points for the reds. Kewley’s senior Anfield career must rank as one of the shortest ever, as he left the club the following month to join Dallas Tornado in the USA. 1939 - We also faced Boro, going down 3-0 at Ayresome Park with left-back Keith Peters playing his only reds game. Micky Fenton netted two of his nine goals against the reds, with Jackie Milne also on target. Kenny in the wars 1984 - Kenny Dalglish had his jaw broken by Kevin Moran’s support brace on his hand as we drew 1-1 with Manchester United at Old Trafford with Craig Johnston nabbing our goal, followed by a late equaliser from Norman Whiteside, one of his four goals past us. Kenny later signed Moran when he was Manager at Blackburn Rovers. Shanks’ first 1960 - Jimmy Melia nabbed the only goal of our Second Division fixture at Hull City to secure Bill Shankly’s first away win as Manager. Cameron’s last 1893 – Forward Jonathan Cameron scored his fifth and final reds goal in our 4-1 win at Fairfield in the Lancashire League. Hugh McQueen, John Miller and Tom Wyllie were all also on target. Mixed fortunes against the Mackems 2013 – We beat Sunderland 3-0 at Anfield, with Luis Suárez setting up Raheem Sterling who lobbed Simon Mignolet to open the scoring before the Uruguayan bagged himself a brace. 1911 – We were thumped 4-0 at Roker Park, with Jackie Mordue netting one of his six goals against the reds, Tim Coleman nabbing one of his nine past us and George Holley and John Cowell also on the scoresheet. Passing on 1949 - Right-half Jock McNab died in Bootle. He helped us to two League titles in the 1920’s, netting six times in 222 reds games, having signed from Bellshill Athletic in November 1919. 1995 – Midfielder Ian Frodsham died from a spinal tumour, aged just nineteen. He had joined as an Under-11, turning professional when he was seventeen. An indoor arena at the Academy in Kirkby was named in his honour, as well as an award for the young player of the year. Two ton Maurice 1909 – We went down 3-0 at Chelsea. Jimmy Windridge scored before George Hilsdon scored one of his five goals past us from the spot. Fred Rouse was also on target for the Blues as right-half Maurice Parry played his 200th League game for the reds. Twice against the Geordies and Blades 1922 - We drew 1-1 at Newcastle United, with Dick Forshaw on the scoresheet early on. 1932 - Harold Barton struck twice as we won 4-2 in L4, with Gordon’s Gunson and Hodgson also on target. 1899 - We won 2-0 at Bramall Lane thanks to goals from Johnny Walker and Jack Cox. 1897 - Sheffield United held us to a goalless draw at Anfield, just twenty-four hours after we had won 4-1 at Bolton Wanderers. No longer the boss 1954 - Bill Shankly resigned as Manager of Grimsby Town. They had finished second in the Third Division North in his first season in charge, but he could not match that in either of the subsequent two campaigns, leading them to victory in 62 of his 118 League games. 2001 - John Toshack resigned as Manager of Saint-Étienne to take over at Real Sociedad for the third time. He had been in charge at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard for just two months. On the move 2007 - Young defender James Smith joined Ross County on loan. He only made one senior appearance for the reds, in our Carling Cup win over Reading at Anfield in October 2006. 2009 – Left-back Robbie Threlfall joined League One Stockport County on loan. He only played twice before returning to Anfield. 2014 – Ex-youth team keeper Ian Dunbavin joined Chesterfield on loan from Accrington Stanley. On the same day, centre-forward Adam Morgan signed for Yeovil Town on a free transfer, scoring just once in nineteen games for the Glovers before joining Accrington Stanley in June 2015. 2017 – Ex-reds forward Ryan Babel signed for Turkish side Besiktas JK, netting 29 times in 86 outings before moving to Fulham two years later. On the same day, centre-back Ben Davies joined Fleetwood Town on loan from Preston North End, netting once in 26 outings. 2020 – Ex-reds midfielder Adam Phillips joined Morecambe on loan from Burnley, netting four times in eleven outings in this first spell with the Shrimps. On the same day, keeper Lawrence Vigouroux signed for Leyton Orient on an eighteen-month deal. Fallen idols 2001 - Robbie Fowler was attacked while out on the town for the evening. The club said, “Although the player’s injuries are not serious, Robbie is obviously upset and shocked.” 1904 – We hosted Nottingham Forest in a top-flight fixture that ended goalless. Forward Sam Raybould played his first game after a seven-month ban for agreeing a move to Southern League side Portsmouth that was deemed illegal by the Football League. Other reds games 2010 – We drew an FA Cup Third Round tie 1-1 at Reading, with Steven Gerrard equalising after Simon Church had given the Royals the lead. However, we crashed out in the Anfield replay. 1965 – We won 3-2 at Blackpool with the home side taking a two-goal half-time lead through a brace from Ray Charnley, two of his seven goals against the reds. Roger Hunt struck twice before Ian St. John headed in the winner. 1937 – Charlton Athletic won 2-1 at Anfield, with Fred Howe netting our goal. 1928 – Burnley held us to a 2-2 draw in L4 with Dick Edmed opening the scoring. Louis Page scored two of his seven goals past us, with Tommy Reid netting our equaliser. 1926 – Leicester City won 3-0 at Anfield, with Arthur Lochhead bagging the first of his five goals past us and Hugh Adcock also netting one of his five before the break. Arthur Chandler then nabbed one of his six strikes against the reds. 1915 – We lost 3-1 at Notts County, with Tom Miller opening the scoring for the reds on the stroke of half time. Jack Peart struck the last of his four goals against us before Sam Richards and George Dale scored late on. Young Razor at home 1973 – Future red Ray Kennedy played for England Under-23’s as they beat the Netherlands 3-1 at his club ground Highbury. -
Happy birthdays 1947 - Winger Steve Heighway was born in Dublin. He signed from Skelmersdale United in May 1970 and made 475 appearances for the reds, scoring 76 times and helping us to win four League titles, two European Cups, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields, before moving to the USA to sign for Minnesota Kicks in 1981. He later returned to the club in 1989 as Youth Development Officer, becoming Academy Director before leaving at the end of the 2006/07 season. He scored on his 25th birthday as we won 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur, with Kevin Keegan also netting and Martin Chivers bagging one of his seven goals against the reds. 1981 - Xabi Alonso was born in Tolosa. He arrived from Real Sociedad for £10.7m in August 2004, and bagged nineteen goals in 210 reds games, including two strikes from inside his own half, helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and FA Community Shield. He moved on to Real Madrid for £30m in August 2009. 1933 - Forward Alan Arnell was born in Chichester. He struck 35 times in 75 reds games having arrived from non-league Worthing in March 1953. He stayed with the club until February 1961 when he was sold to Tranmere Rovers. 1883 – Inside-forward Tommy Green was born in Rock Ferry. He signed from New Brighton in September 1901, netting once in seven outings before moving to Swindon Town in April 1903. Euro joy 1964 - We beat Belgian champions Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht 3-0 at Anfield in a European Cup Second Round first leg tie, thanks to goals from Ian St. John, Roger Hunt and Ron Yeats, who notched his first goal at Anfield. Roger’s treble 1961 - Roger Hunt bagged a hat-trick with Jimmy Melia adding a brace in a 5-0 drubbing of Swansea Town at Anfield. This was Sir Roger’s third treble of the season. Robbie’s first farewell 2001 - Robbie Fowler played the final game in his first spell with the club as Emile Heskey handed us a 1-0 home win over Sunderland, breaking his duck after seventeen games without a goal. Robbie was sacrificed at half-time following the dismissal of Dietmar Hamann for a two-footed tackle on Bernt Haas, joining Leeds United four days later. 300 up 1933 – Gordon Hodgson played his 300th reds game as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by West Bromwich Albion. Sam English netted our goal. Youngsters celebrating 1988 - Jay Spearing was born in Wallasey. The central midfielder graduated to Melwood in the summer of 2007 after captaining the reds as they retained the FA Youth Cup that May. He made 55 senior appearances without finding the back of the net, moving on to Bolton Wanderers in August 2013 after a season on loan with the Trotters. 1988 – Ex-reserves left-back Robbie Threlfall was born in Liverpool. He was part of FA Youth Cup winning sides in consecutive years, scoring in the first leg of the 2006 Final, and made his first appearance with the first eleven in our pre-season friendly at Wrexham in July 2006. He moved to Bradford City in May 2010 after a successful loan spell, moving on to Morecambe two years later. Mixed fortunes against Wolves We have faced Wolverhampton Wanderers three times in the top flight on this day in history, winning one, drawing one and losing the other. 1899 - We drew 1-1 at Anfield with inside-right Johnny Walker on target. Defender Thomas Hunter played the first of his five reds games. 1967 - We won 2-1 when we entertained them again, with Tony Hateley striking in the first minute and Willie Stevenson converting a late penalty, his eighteenth and final goal for the club. The spot-kick was originally taken by Tommy Smith with Evan Williams saving it, but the referee ordered a re-take because the keeper had moved too early, with Stevenson taking responsibility at the second attempt. Future red Alun Evans netted for the visitors. 1980 - We were thumped 4-1 at Molineux, with Phil Neal grabbing our goal. Ex-red Emlyn Hughes bagged their fourth and was then whisked away by Eamonn Andrews to film ‘This Is Your Life’. John Richards netted the last of his five goals against the reds, with Mel Eves and Normal Bell also on target. Most recently 2020 – We lost a UEFA Champions League group game 2-0 to Atalanta behind closed doors at Anfield, although we remained top of the table with two matches to go. James Milner reached a half century of European games for the reds. 2017 – Chelsea held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Ex-Blue Mohamed Salah put us ahead during the second half, but Willian bagged a late leveller. 2012 - We were held to a goalless draw at Swansea City’s Liberty Stadium, with José Enrique having a goal ruled out for a very marginal offside. Mixed fortunes against Boro 1978 - We beat Middlesbrough 2-0 at home thanks to goals from Terry McDermott and former Boro star Graeme Souness. 1995 - We lost 2-1 on our first visit to the Riverside Stadium, with Neil Ruddock grabbing our goal after Neil Cox had opened the scoring, with future red Nick Barmby scoring the winner a minute later as keeper David James played his hundredth League game for us. Ged’s au revoir 1993 - Gérard Houllier resigned as Manager of France after their failure to qualify for the World Cup Finals in the USA. He had been in charge for twelve games, winning seven of these. McQueen between the sticks 1893 - Utility player and future Manager Matt McQueen played in goal for the first of 41 times, keeping a clean sheet in our goalless Second Division draw at Newcastle United on our first ever visit there. 1905 - We returned to St. James’ Park in the top flight, winning 3-2 thanks to a Sam Raybould goal and two penalties from Alf West. This completed our first ever treble of League wins on the North East in a season, having already won at Sunderland and Middlesbrough. Future red ‘Wee’ Ronald Orr scored for the home side, as did Peter McWilliam. 1892 – Matt’s brother winger Hugh McQueen married Mary Jane Ross in Edinburgh. On the move 1897 - Left-half Bill Goldie signed from Clyde for the reds, joining his brother Archie at Anfield. He went on to score six times in 174 appearances, helping us to the League title in 1901 before joining Fulham in January 1904. 1995 - Steve Nicol joined Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer from Notts County. He made just 54 appearances in three seasons with the Owls, without scoring. 2004 – Midfielder Lee Peltier signed as a professional with the reds. He made his senior debut in our Carling Cup Third Round defeat of Reading in October 2006, but made just four first-team appearances in total before moving to Yeovil Town in January 2008 after a successful loan spell. 2018 – Ex-reds forward Robbie Keane was appointed to Republic of Ireland's coaching staff as Assistant Manager. 2021 – Spanish midfielder Stefan Bajčetić signed as a professional, having arrived as a centre-back from Real Club Celta de Vigo. He made his senior bow from the bench in our 9-0 thrashing of Bournemouth in August 2022. Other reds games 2006 – Steven Gerrard netted the only goal of Manchester City’s visit to Anfield. 1950 – We drew 1-1 at Burnley with Kevin Baron on the scoresheet. 1925 – We held Huddersfield Town to a goalless draw at Leeds Road. 1922 – Harry Chambers was on target as we won 1-0 at Aston Villa, with Billy Walker missing a penalty for the home side. 1911 – Preston North End won 1-0 in L4. At the World Cup 2022 – Future red Cody Gakpo struck as the Netherlands were held to a 1-1 draw in a World Cup group game in Qatar, with Virgil van Dijk skippering the side. On the same day, Jordan Henderson and future red Raheem Sterling played in England’s goalless draw with the USA, while Joe Allen won his first cap in his second spell with Swansea City as Wales lost 2-0 to Iran, with ex-reds Danny Ward, Neco Williams and Harry Wilson all also featuring. Not going to the Far East 2001 - Future red Harry Kewell played as Australia lost 3-0 in Uruguay in the second leg of their World Cup play-off, to fall at the final hurdle 3-1 on aggregate. Youngsters in action 2005 – Future reds loanee Nuri Şahin became the youngest ever Bundesliga goalscorer, aged seventeen years and 81 days, scoring for Borussia Dortmund against 1. FC Nürnberg. On the same day, future reds loanee Victor Moses won his only cap for England Under-16’s in their 2-1 victory over Scotland. 2022 – Future red Trey Nyoni played for England Under-16’s in their 2-1 friendly win over Germany in Spain. Also in international action 1970 – Emlyn Hughes played for England in their 3-1 friendly defeat of East Germany at Wembley. 1990 – Future red Jari Litmanen played as Finland drew a European Championships qualifier 1-1 in Malta. -
God’s first great work 1993 - Robbie Fowler scored his first League hat-trick as we beat Southampton 4-2 at Anfield, with strike partner Ian Rush also on the scoresheet. Ronnie Rosenthal made his 97th and final reds appearance in this game, as a half-time substitute for Stig Inge Bjørnebye. Matt Le Tissier netted two of his seven strikes against the reds in this game. Happy birthdays 1985 – Estonian centre-half Ragnar Klavan was born in Viljandi. He signed from Augsburg for £4.2m in July 2016, notching twice in 53 outings before moving to Cagliari for £2m in August 2018. 1929 - Centre-forward Dave Hickson was born in Ellesmere Port. He made the controversial switch across Stanley Park to join the reds for £12,000 in November 1959, putting an extra 15,000 on the gate for his debut, with one fan running on to kiss him on the cheek! He scored 38 times in his 67 reds games before joining Aston Villa in July 1961. 1959 - Glenn Hysén was born in Gothenburg. The Swedish centre-half was signed from Fiorentina for £600,000 in June 1989. He went on to make 93 appearances, notching three times and helping us to our most recent title win in 1990, as well as the FA Charity Shield on his debut. He returned to his hometown to sign for GAIS in May 1992. 1989 - Former reserves defender Ronald Huth was born in Asuncion, Paraguay. He signed from Tacuary in January 2007 but failed to make the first-team match-day squad, although he played in our pre-season win at Wrexham later that year, his only senior friendly action. He was released in June 2009. 1933 - Right-back Fred Perry was born in Cheltenham. He signed from Worthing in July 1954, but made just one senior appearance before joining Sittingbourne in January 1957. A truly unlucky break 2004 - Djibril Cissé suffered a truly horrible broken leg as we drew 2-2 at Blackburn Rovers, with John Arne Riise and Milan Baroš netting our goals. It was first feared that Cissé might be away from the game for a year, or even have had to lose his leg, but instead he was back in a red shirt less than six months later. Jay Bothroyd and Brett Emerton were on target for the home side. 1926 - Harry Chambers was on target as we lost another top-flight encounter at Ewood Park 2-1. Syd Puddefoot netted one of his six strikes past the reds, with Ted Harper scoring one of his five goals against us. Willie off the mark 1937 – Inside-left Willie Fagan grabbed the first of his 57 reds goals as we won 3-2 in the top flight at Sunderland, with Berry Nieuwenhuys and Alf Hanson also on target. Raich Carter bagged one of his six goals past us, with Pat Gallacher netting the last of his six. On top of the pile 1982 - The reds went top of the League after beating Brighton & Hove Albion 3-1 at Anfield, staying there for the rest of the season. Gerry Ryan opened the scoring for the visitors before ex-Seagull Mark Lawrenson equalised, added to by a Kenny Dalglish brace before the break. Tommy signs on 1957 - Keeper Tommy Lawrence signed on as a professional. The ‘flying pig’ had to wait five years to make his senior bow but went on to keep goal on 390 occasions in total, helping us to claim two League titles, the club’s first ever FA Cup and an FA Charity Shield. He moved across the water to join Tranmere Rovers in November 1971. Neco’s bow 2019 – Right-back Neco Williams made his senior debut as our League Cup Fourth Round tie with Arsenal ended 5-5 at Anfield, before the reds progressed 5-4 on penalties. An own goal from Shkodran Mustafi put us ahead, but we fell 3-1 behind thanks to two of Gabriel Martinelli’s four goals past us before James Milner converted a spot-kick after Harvey Elliott, the youngest ever reds player to start a game at Anfield aged sixteen years and 209 days, was felled. Ainsley Maitland-Niles restored the visitors’ two-goal lead, but Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Divock Origi drew us level. Joe Willock struck for the Gunners, but Origi nabbed an injury-time equaliser. Milner, Adam Lallana, Rhian Brewster and Origi all scored in the shoot-out with Caoimhín Kelleher saving from Dani Ceballos, enabling Curtis Jones to send us through the next round. The lights come on at Anfield 1957 - Floodlights were used at Anfield for the first time, having been installed at a cost of £15,000. Billy Liddell nabbed a brace as we beat Everton 3-2 in the second leg of the Floodlight Challenge Cup, played to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Liverpool County FA. Johnny Morrissey grabbed our other goal as we shot into an aggregate lead inside the first 25 minutes, although we eventually lost out 4-3 overall. Future red Dave Hickson headed one of the Blues’ goals on his 28th birthday. Jimmy’s double century 1979 - Jimmy Case played his 200th reds game as we beat Third Division Exeter City 2-0 in a League Cup Fourth Round tie at Anfield, with both goals scored by substitute David Fairclough. Beaten by the Mancs 1915 - We lost 2-0 to Manchester United in a Wartime League match at Anfield. 1943 - We lost another wartime fixture against the Red Devils at Maine Road, this time 1-0. A thumping win 1965 - We beat Nottingham Forest 4-0 at Anfield in a top-flight match. Willie Stevenson converted a penalty before Roger Hunt nabbed a brace, with Ian St. John completing the scoring. Mixed fortunes in the Champions League 2001 - We qualified for second group phase of the Champions League after beating Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to a Vladimír Šmicer strike and Stephen Wright’s only reds goal as Jamie Redknapp made his 308th and final appearance. 2002 - Francisco Rufete’s deflected shot was the only goal of the game at Anfield against Rafael Benítez’s Valencia, to leave us needing a win at Basel to progress to the second group stage. Derby joy 1920 - Harry Chambers struck twice as we won 3-0 at Goodison with Dick Johnson also on target. He made a total of 110 appearances for the Magpies, netting nine times before joining Fulham in November 1998, helping them to claim the Third Division title with a record points total. Off on loan 1999 - Ex-reserves striker John Durnin joined Blackpool from Portsmouth on loan. He’s red, he’s white 2000 - Nick Barmby signed from Everton for £6m, prompting an unprecedented tide of bitterness from across Stanley Park. He became the first player to switch directly from Everton to Liverpool since Dave Hickson in November 1959. Barmby netted eight times in 58 reds games, moving on to Leeds United for £2.75m in August 2002. Red departures 2017 – Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva was sold to S.S. Lazio for £5m. He made 346 senior appearances after signing from Grêmio for a reported £5m in May 2007, notching just seven times. 1992 - Barry Venison was sold to Newcastle United for £250,000. Happy birthday Ray 1922 - Welsh international full-back Ray Lambert was born in Bagillt, Flintshire. He joined the reds when he was just thirteen and went on to make 341 first-team appearances, netting just twice, including being part of the 1947 title-winning side. Other birthdays 1905 - Outside-right Billy Hartill was born. He only made four senior appearances in early 1936, after signing from Everton that January, moving on to Bristol Rovers just two months later. He had previously been a prolific marksman with hometown club Wolverhampton Wanderers, bagging 164 goals in 221 League games. 1895 - Mid-1920’s reserves full-back James Garner was born in Manchester. He only played five times for the reds and went on to make 26 League appearances for Southport. Writing history 2002 - It was announced that a new weekly magazine called LFC would be launched the following month, the first official weekly magazine dedicated to a single Premiership club. Rick Parry said, “We feel our fans are ready for the new weekly ‘LFC’ magazine which will give them a real insight into life at Anfield and Melwood.” It was eventually replaced by a monthly publication after 513 issues. Youngsters on their way out 2006 - French centre-back Carl Medjani signed for Lorient permanently, having previously spent a season on loan there. He made only nine League appearances to add to the 25 from his first spell at Stade Le Moustoir, before joining AJ Ajaccio. 2011 – Argentine midfielder Gerardo Bruna was sold to Blackpool, having helped the reserves to claim the League at the end of his first season in 2008. He made just four substitute appearances for the Tangerines before moving to S.D. Huesca in September 2013. Adam’s day 2008 – Reserves winger Adam Hammill signed a new contract until 2011, also joining Blackpool on loan on the same day. He struck once in 23 outings for the Seasiders, and later spent time with fellow Championship side Barnsley that season, moving permanently to Oakwell in August 2009. God for England 1993 - Robbie Fowler netted for England Under-18’s as they beat France 2-0 in a European Championship Finals group game in Stoke. 1987 – Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye scored his first goal for Norway Under-19’s as they beat Denmark 3-0 in a tournament game in Slagelse. He struck four times in 291 reds appearances after signing from Bury for £8,000 in January 1930. He returned to his native land in September 1938, joining Third Lanark. Future red Mikel San José also featured on the same day as Spain and Portugal also drew 1-1 in the same tournament. 2010 – Future red Thiago Alcântara netted for Spain Under-19’s as they beat Croatia 2-1 in the European Championships Finals in France, with Dani Pacheco also playing. Chris Mavinga played in France’s 4-1 defeat of the Netherlands, while future reds Steven Caulker and Nathaniel Clyne played as England beat Austria 3-2 in the same competition. On the same day, future red Fabio Borini featured as Italy lost 2-0 to Portugal. 2016 – Sheyi Ojo played for England Under-19’s in their 2-1 defeat of Croatia in a group-stage game in Germany. Le Boss arrives 1998 - The reds tried a bold move as Gérard Houllier was appointed joint Manager alongside Roy Evans. The partnership only lasted four months before Uncle Roy stepped aside. Ged remained in charge until May 2004, leading us to the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield. 2010 - Brendan Rodgers was appointed Manager of Swansea City. He guided them to promotion from the Championship via the play-offs in his first campaign, and eleventh in the Premiership the following year before moving to Anfield in June 2012. Adios Luis 2014 - Luis Suárez was sold to Barcelona for a club record £75m, having struck 82 times in 133 reds games since his arrival from Ajax for a club record fee of £22.8m in January 2011, capturing the hearts of all reds. He helped us to claim the League Cup the following season, helping the Catalans to the UEFA Champions League and four La Liga titles amongst many honours before joining Club Atlético de Madrid in September 2020. The final piece of the jigsaw 1997 - Paul Ince was signed by Roy Evans from Internazionale for £4.2m. His Anfield career started well, but then faded, and he was moved on by Gérard Houllier as he had become a disruptive influence in the dressing room. He struck seventeen times in 81 reds games during his two years at Anfield. Sir Roger at the World Cup 1966 - Roger Hunt was on target at Wembley as England beat Mexico 2-0 in their second group game at the World Cup Finals. Brian’s farewell 2015 – Midfielder Brian Hall died. He signed for the reds in July 1968 fresh from graduating university, and scored 21 goals in 224 games, helping us to claim a League title, UEFA Cup, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield. His most memorable moment came when he bagged his first reds goal, the FA Cup Semi-final winner against Everton at Old Trafford in March 1971, also scoring at the same stage against Leicester City three years later. He moved on to Plymouth Argyle in July 1976, later finishing his playing career with Burnley, but he returned to Anfield in 1991 to take up the post of Public Relations Manager, a position he held until retiring in 2012. Debuting against the Germans 2003 - Harry Kewell played his first reds game as we won a friendly 3-1 at 1. FC Köln. Michael Owen nabbed a brace, with Emile Heskey also on target. The game was played to commemorate their redeveloped RheinEnergie Stadion. 2005 - Momo Sissoko had his first reds outing as we beat Bayer 04 Leverkusen 3-0 in Lustenau, Austria. Willkommen Didi 1999 - It was announced that Newcastle United midfielder Dietmar Hamann had agreed to join the reds, after a possible move to Arsenal had broken down. He signed a week later, and made 283 first-team appearances, acting as a sturdy bulwark in front of the defence, and scoring just eleven times. He moved on to Manchester City in July 2006, having helped us to claim the Champions League, UEFA Cup, two UEFA Super Cups, two FA Cups, two League Cups and the FA Charity Shield. A divine treble 1999 - Robbie Fowler netted a hat-trick as we thumped a German XI 8-0 in St. Gallen, at the end of our Swiss training camp. Titi Camara scored in his first appearance for the reds, while Sander Westerveld also made his Liverpool bow. Patrik Berger added a brace, with Vegard Heggem and Danny Murphy also on the scoresheet. 2008 – We also played a friendly in Switzerland, beating Luzern 2-1 in Grenchen, thanks to goals from Lucas and Andriy Voronin. Off the mark 2014 – Winger Kristoffer Peterson struck for the club for the first time as we lost 2-1 at Brøndby IF, with centre-halves Tiago Ilori and Lloyd Jones, midfielders Adam Phillips and Jordan Rossiter, and defender Kevin Stewart all playing their first games for the reds. 2011 – Charlie Adam bagged his first goal for the reds, converting a twice-taken penalty as we beat a Malaysia XI 6-3 in front of 84,000 fans in the Stadium Nasional Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur. Singapore sling 2001 - The reds played their first ever match in Singapore, beating a Singapore League Select XI 2-0 thanks to goals from strike partners Emile Heskey and Michael Owen. Auf wiedersehen 2004 - Markus Babbel signed for VfB Stuttgart on a free transfer. He helped them to finish fifth in the Bundesliga in his first season and played a total of 46 League games for them before stepping down as a player in May 2007 to become assistant coach. Keepers on the move 2008 - Ex-red Tony Warner signed for Hull City. He played just twice for the Tigers before being released in February 2010. 2005 - Chris Kirkland joined West Bromwich Albion on loan after just 45 first-team games for the reds since his £6m signing from Coventry City in August 2001. He could only play twelve times for the Baggies as they were relegated, as he was once again cursed by injuries. Happy birthday Ben 2001 – Keeper Ben Winterbottom was born in Preston. He was an unused substitute in our League Cup Quarter-final thumping at Aston Villa in December 2019, having joined the club from Blackburn Rovers nine months earlier. Ex-reds on the move 1993 - Peter Beardsley re-signed for Newcastle United from Everton for £1.4m. He had been at St. James’ Park for four years immediately before arriving at Anfield, and his second spell lasted as long, netting 56 times in 157 outings as he helped the Toon to back-to-back second-place finishes in the Premiership. 1996 - Dean Saunders left Galatasaray for Nottingham Forest in a £1.5m deal. On the move 1987 - Future reds centre-half John Scales signed for Wimbledon from Bristol Rovers for £70,000. In comes Spud 1997 - Danny Murphy arrived from Crewe Alexandra for an overall £3m fee. Spud was nearly on his way out early into his Anfield career, but later established himself as a vital squad member. He made 249 first-team appearances, scoring a useful 44 times, before moving to Charlton Athletic for £2.5m in August 2004. He had helped us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and FA Charity Shield in his time at the club. The Wright signing 1991 - Mark Wright arrived from Derby County for £2.2m. With Alan Hansen retired, Glenn Hysén soon to go and Gary Gillespie moving on to Celtic, we were in dire need of a quality centre-back, and Wright was drafted in after his impressive displays for England at the 1990 World Cup. He notched nine times in 210 reds appearances and lifted the FA Cup at Wembley in 1992 before retiring from playing in August 1998. Double capture 2011 – Winger Stewart Downing signed from Aston Villa for £18.5m, while keeper Alexander Doni joined on a free transfer from Roma. Downing netted seven times in 91 outings before moving to West Ham United for £6m in August 2013, as well as scoring in the shoot-out as we claimed the Carling Cup at Wembley in 2012. Doni featured four times before joining Botafogo in his native Brazil in January 2013 having apparently suffered a heart attack during a routine medical in the summer of 2012. Final despair 2018 – Dejan Lovren played in the World Cup Final in Moscow, with France beating Croatia 4-2. 2007 - Javier Mascherano was on the losing side in the Copa América Final, as Argentina were beaten 3-0 by future red Alexander Doni’s Brazil in Venezuela. Meanwhile, Emiliano Insúa featured as Argentina Under-20’s beat Mexico 1-0 in the Quarter-final of the World Championships in Ottawa. Off goes Igor 2005 - Igor Bišcan signed for Panathinaikos after 118 reds games. The big Croat netted three times as he helped us to the Worthington Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Charity Shield in 2001, the Worthington Cup again two years later, as well as playing a key role on the road to Istanbul. He had arrived from Dinamo Zagreb for £5.5m in December 2000. 1969 – Keeper John Ogston moved on to Doncaster Rovers, after a successful loan spell. He signed from his hometown club Aberdeen for £10,000 in September 1965 having played over 200 games for the Dons, but only appeared once for the reds. Lazar signs on 2014 - Serbian winger Lazar Marković signed from SL Benfica for £19.8m. He struck three times in 34 games before spending much of his time out on loan, moving on to Fulham for free in February 2019. Bellers off the mark 2006 - Paul Anderson and Craig Bellamy both scored in their first reds games as we won a friendly 2-0 at Wrexham. Also making their first senior appearances that day were Godwin Antwi, Danny Guthrie, Adam Hammill, Jack Hobbs, Besian Idrizaj, David Martin, Danny O'Donnell, Gabriel Paletta, Lee Peltier, Miki Roqué, James Smith and Robbie Threlfall. Keeping bows 2022 – Custodians Harvey Davies and Fabian Mrozek both played their first reds games as we beat Crystal Palace 2-0 to secure the Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy 2022, thanks to goals from Jordan Henderson and Mohamed Salah. More reds firsts 2009 - Keeper Péter Gulácsi, right-back Glen Johnson and centre-backs Daniel Ayala and Mikel San José all made their reds bows as we were held to a goalless draw in our friendly with St. Gallen 1879 in their AFG Arena in Switzerland. Beaten again 2020 – Arsenal came from behind to win 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium behind closed doors, as we fell to only our third League defeat of the season. Sadio Mané opened the scoring, but Alexandre Lacazette and Reiss Nelson both capitalised on reds errors to give the Gunners a half-time lead, which they held on to despite a second-half siege by the visitors. Bonne anniversaire 1981 - French midfielder Alou Diarra was born in Villepinte. After his free transfer from Bayern München in July 2002, he spent three seasons on loan in France, first at Le Havre AC, and then at Bastia and Racing Club de Lens, who he signed permanently for in June 2005. His only appearance in a red shirt came in a friendly win in Le Havre, when he enjoyed the rare distinction of returning to the pitch after having been substituted, as a replacement for Vegard Heggem. Suso the champion 2012 – Suso featured as Spain Under-19’s beat Greece 1-0 in the European Championships Final in Estonia. 2016 – Future red Dominic Solanke scored for England Under-19’s as they beat the Netherlands 2-1 in a group stage game in Germany, with Sheyi Ojo and Jordan Rossiter also in action. This was his second and last strike at this level. Stevie signs on again 2013 – Steven Gerrard signed a new contract to tie him to the club until 2015. He struck 186 times in 710 reds games, moving on to LA Galaxy in July 2015, before returning to the reds on the Academy staff. Redders in charge 1999 - It was confirmed that Jamie Redknapp would take over from the departed Paul Ince as reds captain. Robbie Fowler was appointed as his deputy. Unfortunately, much of his time as skipper was blighted by injury. Another birth and death 1920 - Keeper Ray Minshull was born in Bolton. He spent most of his five years at Anfield as deputy to Cyril Sidlow, making just 31 first-team appearances after joining the reds in September 1946. He left for Southport in June 1951, playing more than 200 times for them, and later became Player/Manager at Wigan Athletic. 1953 – Forward Dave Wright died. He bagged 35 goals in exactly a century of reds games after signing from Sunderland in March 1930. He remained at Anfield until July 1934, when he joined Hull City for £1,000. On the move 2003 – Future reds right-back Glen Johnson joined Chelsea from West Ham United for £6m, becoming the first signing of the Roman Abramovich era. He bagged four goals in 71 outings before joining Portsmouth in August 2006, initially on loan. On the same day, ex-reds reserves defender Alex Watson left basement side Exeter City for nearby Southern League side Taunton Town after one goal in 51 outings since signing on free transfer from Torquay United two years earlier. 1997 - Ex-red Ray Houghton signed for Reading from Crystal Palace on a free transfer. He struck just once in 56 appearances in his two seasons with the Royals before moving on to Stevenage Borough. 2016 – Ex-reds right-back Antonio Barragán joined Middlesbrough from Valencia, playing 27 times as they were relegated in his only campaign on Teesside, moving on to Real Betis Balompié in July 2017. 1993 - Ex-reserves striker John Durnin joined Portsmouth from Oxford United for £200,000, four years after moving to the Manor Ground from Anfield. Walsh walks in 1984 - Paul Walsh signed from Luton Town for £700,000. He went on to nab 37 goals in 112 reds games, helping us to the League title in 1986, although he missed the run-in due to ruptured ankle ligaments. He left Anfield to sign for Tottenham Hotspur for £500,000 in February 1988. The youngsters claim a trophy 1996 - We won the FA Youth Cup for the first of four times to date. We beat West Ham United 2-1 at Anfield, to claim the trophy 4-1 on aggregate. Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen featured for the reds. Setting records 1979 - Our 3-0 win at Leeds United was our thirtieth League victory of the season, one behind Tottenham Hotspur’s record from 1960/61. David Johnson bagged a brace either side of a Jimmy Case strike in a game originally postponed from two months earlier. We therefore ended the League season having only conceded sixteen goals in all, a record that stood until 2004/05 with a then record 68 points, having clinched our eleventh League title a week earlier. We also netted a total of 85 League goals, so claiming a £50,000 prize from a national newspaper for scoring more than two goals per game across the season. Red farewells 2022 – Nathan Redmond put Southampton ahead early on at St Mary’s Stadium, but ex-Saints loanee Takumi Minamino struck his fourteenth goal in his 55th and final outing. Divock Origi came off the bench for his 175th and last reds appearance, with Joël Matip heading in as we eventually won 2-1 to take the title race down to the final day. 2009 - We won 2-0 at West Bromwich Albion to relegate the home side, thanks to goals from Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt. This was our thirteenth away League win of the season, equalling a club record from 1904/05, and our ninth straight win at The Hawthorns. Álvaro Arbeloa played his 98th and final reds game, being involved with an angry exchange with Jamie Carragher towards the end of the match. Crossing the park 1895 - Forward Fred Geary signed from Everton for £60, having top scored as they won the League in 1891 and won three England caps. He bagged fourteen goals in 45 reds games, helping us to claim the Second Division title in his first season. This game was originally postponed back in December. International debutants 1964 - Peter Thompson made his England debut in their 4-3 friendly defeat of Portugal in Lisbon. Clubmate Gordon Milne also played. 1928 - Future reds left-back Ernie Blenkinsop won the first of his 26 England caps as they thumped France 5-1 in a friendly in Paris. 2007 - Stephen Darby won his first cap for England Under-19’s, playing alongside clubmates Adam Hammill, Jack Hobbs and Craig Lindfield, and against Jordy Brouwer as the Netherlands won this European Championships qualifier 2-1 at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. Into the park 2002 - Liverpool Football Club announced their first set of plans for a new stadium in Stanley Park, which it was said would hold 55,000 supporters. The new stadium was scheduled to cost between £60m and £70m to build and it was claimed that it could even be ready for the start of the 2005/06 season. These plans have now been moth-balled. Wor Kev’s testimonial 1984 - We took part in a testimonial game for Kevin Keegan as we drew 2-2 at Newcastle United. Michael Robinson and Graeme Souness bagged our goals, while Keegan and Terry McDermott were on target for the home side. Thommo at the wrong end 1980 - Skipper Phil Thompson scored an own goal for England as they were thumped 4-1 by Wales at the Racecourse Ground in the British International Championships. A treble for the Saint 1964 - Ian St. John scored a hat-trick as we beat Mexican side Monterrey 3-0 in a friendly in Chicago. Heading east 1991 - We played our first ever game in Singapore, drawing 1-1 with Arsenal in the Caltex Cup, with Ian Rush on the scoresheet. The game went into extra-time, but we lost 4-3 on penalties in the National Stadium. 1961 - Alan A’Court netted for England in an FA Tour game in Singapore that ended in a 9-0 rout. Manchester City’s George Hannah bagged a treble. Facing the Mancs 1919 – We lost 1-0 to Manchester United at Old Trafford in a game staged in aid of the National Footballers’ War Fund. In and outs 1909 – Welsh international right-half Maurice Parry left the reds to join Partick Thistle. He had scored four times in 221 reds games since arriving from Brighton United in August 1900. He later spent time coaching back at Anfield. 1935 - Right-back Bob Done was sold to Reading for £150. He struck thirteen times in 155 reds games after signing from his hometown club Runcorn in April 1926. 1982 – Centre-half John McGregor signed from Queen's Park, failing to break through before moving on to Rangers in May 1987, with whom he won the League Cup. 2020 – First-team coach Jacques Crevoisier died. He worked under Gérard Houllier for two years after the departure of Patrice Bergues. On target for England 1986 - Future red Peter Beardsley grabbed his first full international goal as England beat Mexico 3-0 in a friendly in Los Angeles. Watford’s John Barnes also played. 1994 - Beardsley, then back with Newcastle United, also scored for England, playing alongside reds full-back Rob Jones, as England thumped Greece 5-0 in a friendly at Wembley. 2002 - Another future reds forward struck for England Under-21’s, as Peter Crouch grabbed his only goal at this level in a 2-1 defeat of host nation Switzerland in a European Championship Finals group game, with fellow future reds Paul Konchesky and Jermaine Pennant also featuring. Ex-red Rigobert Song also represented his country that day, as Cameroon lost a friendly 2-1 in Denmark. King Kenny for the Scots Kenny Dalglish twice represented his country against Wales in the British International Championships on this day in the 1970’s. 1975 - He featured in a 2-2 draw alongside John Toshack and ex-red Ted MacDougall at Ninian Park. Djibril the champion 1999 - Future red Djibril Cissé played as Auxerre beat Saint-Étienne at the Stade de France in a penalty shoot-out to claim the Coupe Nationale des Juniors, also known as the Challenge Emmanuel Gambardella. 2006 – Future reds centre-half Kolo Touré was on the losing side as Barcelona beat Arsenal 2-1 in the UEFA Champions League Final in Paris. Happy birthday cobber 1974 – Former Head of Fitness & Conditioning Darren Burgess was born in Sydney. He joined the club after the 2010 World Cup, but moved back down under in September 2012. On the move again 2005 - Ex-red Patrik Berger agreed to sign for Aston Villa from Portsmouth on a free transfer on 1st July. He had notched eight times in sixty Pompey games, but turned out just 32 times for Villa, netting twice. He was released in May 2008, returning home to join Sparta Praha. 2010 – Ex-reserves forward Astrit Ajdarević was released by Leicester City, having failed to make the first team since making his loan move permanent. 2012 – Ex-reserves left-back Robbie Threlfall signed for Morecambe, so far netting twice in 64 games for the League Two outfit. 2018 – Pepijn Lijnders was sacked as Manager of N.E.C. after they failed to gain promotion, soon returning to a coaching role with the reds. 2022 - Martin Škrtel announced his retirement from playing, having most recently appeared for Hajskala Ráztočno in his native Slovakia. He joined the reds from Zenit St. Petersburg for £6.5m in January 2008 to become our most expensive defender to date. He notched eighteen goals in 320 games in total, including one in our Carling Cup win at Wembley in February 2012, moving on to Fenerbahçe SK for £5.5m in July 2016. Unfortunately, he also put through his own net a joint club record eight times. On the same day, future red Cody Gakpo won the Golden Shoe Award as the Eredivisie’s Footballer of the Year. This was our final game of the season, as we ended up in second place behind Derby County. 1965 - Bill Shankly fielded a team of eleven reserves in our League match at Wolverhampton Wanderers, which came only five days before the FA Cup Final. John Sealey scored in his only reds appearance, with Geoff Strong and Alf Arrowsmith also on target as we won 3-1. Full-backs Alan Hignett and Tom Lowry and keeper Billy Molyneux also played their only senior reds games, while left-back Phil Ferns made his 28th and last appearance for the club and inside-left Gordon Wallace played for the 22nd and final time. 1947 - Winger Billy Watkinson scored on his Liverpool debut as we came from behind to win 2-1 at Aston Villa, with Willie Fagan nabbing the other. 1992 - Sami Hyypiä played his first game in the Finnish Premier League, as Myllykosken Pallo-47 won 2-0 at Jazz. 2008 - Jonjo Shelvey became Charlton Athletic’s youngest ever player, aged sixteen years and 59 days. He played the full ninety minutes in their 3-0 Championship defeat at Barnsley. Ton up for Mo 2019 – Mohamed Salah played his hundredth reds game as we thumped Huddersfield Town 5-0 at Anfield, reaching a club record 69 goals in an opening century of outings. Naby Keïta scored our fastest ever Premiership goal after just fourteen seconds, with Sadio Mané and Salah each bagging a brace. 1924 – Full-back Tommy Lucas and right-half Jock McNab both reached a century of League games for the reds as we beat Notts County at Anfield, with Dick Forshaw netting the only goal of the game. Youngsters win again 2007 - We retained the FA Youth Cup, to claim it for the third time. Centre-back Robbie Threlfall, who had scored an own goal in the first leg, bagged the only goal of the game at Old Trafford, to wipe out Manchester United’s 2-1 first leg victory. We went on to secure the trophy by winning a penalty shoot-out 4-3, with keeper David Roberts saving one of United’s spot-kicks. Red endings 2008 - Peter Crouch grabbed his 42nd and final reds goal as we were held to a 2-2 draw at Birmingham City. We had fallen two goals behind to Mikael Forssell and Sebastian Larsson strikes before Crouch and then Yossi Benayoun netted to ensure we qualified for the next season’s Champions League. 1952 – Inside-forward Jack Haigh played his eleventh and last reds game as we ended the season with a 4-0 top-flight thumping at Preston North End, with defender George Whitworth appearing for the ninth and final time. The legendary Tom Finney scored one of his five goals past us, with Charlie Wayman bagging two of his six against us and Angus Morrison netting one of his four. 1902 – Right-back Tom Robertson played his 47th and last reds game as we drew 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers. Walter Whittaker struck one of his six goals against the reds. Johnny Walker scored in his 120th and final reds fame with Sam Raybould having a penalty saved. Hammerings 2023 – We beat West Ham United 2-1 at the London Stadium, despite falling behind to Lucas Paquetá’s strike. Cody Gakpo soon levelled, with Joël Matip heading in a second-half winner. 2006 - Luis García and West Ham United’s Hayden Mullins were both sent off at Upton Park, with Mullins becoming the fifteenth opposition player sent off against us that season. Both therefore had to sit out the FA Cup Final two weeks later as a result. Djibril Cissé bagged a brace either side of a Nigel Reo-Coker goal as we won 2-1. The game was preceded by a perfectly observed minute’s silence for former Hammers manager John Lyall, who died the week before. Four for St. Michael 2003 - Michael Owen bagged four goals, including his hundredth League goal, as we trounced West Bromwich Albion 6-0 at The Hawthorns, our record win over the Baggies. Michael’s fourth goal, our fifth, was our 700th in the Premiership. Milan Baroš added a brace. Gary’s treble 1986 - Defender Gary Gillespie scored a second-half hat-trick past David Seaman, including a penalty, as we thumped already relegated Birmingham City 5-0 at Anfield. Ian Rush opened the scoring, with Jan Mølby also on target from the spot. Future red Julian Dicks was on the losing side that day. This win kept us on course for our sixteenth League title. Mark Walters wins the title for Leeds 1992 - Mark Walters scored the decisive second goal that handed the League title to Leeds United, as we beat Manchester United 2-0 at Anfield despite both Nicky Tanner and Ian Rush having to be substituted inside the first half hour. Ian Rush had scored the first, his first ever goal against the Mancs. The Kop crowed “now you’re gonna believe us, you’ll never win the League”, while Ray Houghton played his 200th game for the club while Barry Venison appeared for the 158th and last time. 2002 - Walters joined Bristol Rovers from Swindon Town on a free transfer. He went on to play nearly a hundred times for the Pirates, netting fourteen times. 1941 - We also entertained United, with Cyril Done and Billy Liddell on target in a 2-1 Wartime League victory. Honoured 2009 - Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres were both voted in the PFA Team of the Year, with ex-red Nicolas Anelka and future red Glen Johnson also included. Ex-red Jack Hobbs was named in the League One equivalent. 2015 - Philippe Coutinho was named in the PFA Team of the Year. Beginning and ends 1971 - Joe Fagan’s son Kit made his second and final senior appearance as we drew 2-2 at Manchester City in the League, Bill Shankly’s 600th game in charge of the reds. Bobby Graham netted both our goals while midfielder Steve Arnold played his second and last reds game with keeper Tommy Lawrence appearing for the 390th and final time. Ian Ross put through his own net, with Steve Carter also on target for the home side. The reds were fined £7,500 for fielding a weakened team, with the match only two days after a League match at Nottingham Forest and just two days before the second leg of our Fairs Cup Semi-final at Leeds United. Derby joy 1943 - We thumped Everton 4-1 at Anfield with Willie Fagan, Jack Balmer, Cyril Done and Berry Nieuwenhuys netting in this Wartime League fixture. A happy day 1973 - Roy Evans married Mary at Liverpool’s Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral. 2010 – Ex-red Álvaro Arbeloa’s wife Carlota gave birth to a daughter, Alba. A double for Quasi 1989 - Peter Beardsley played his first competitive game following the Hillsborough disaster, bagging a brace as England thumped Albania 5-0 in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley. On the same day, future red Karl-Heinz Riedle netted in West Germany’s 1-1 draw with the Netherlands in Feyenoord. The two players would meet in the World Cup Semi-final the following year. István Kozma won his last cap in his first spell as an Újpest player as Hungary lost a friendly 4-0 in Italy. Rushie the ambassador 2010 – Legendary reds striker Ian Rush was appointed as our Soccer Schools Ambassador. Wembley derby joy 2012 - We came from behind to beat Everton 2-1 at Wembley in our FA Cup Semi-final with keeper Brad Jones becoming the first reds player to make his first four appearances for the club in four different competitions. Nikica Jelavić pounced on hesitation in the centre of our defence to give the Blues a half-time lead. However, Luis Suárez then capitalised on a short back-pass by Sylvain Distin, with Andy Carroll heading in a late winner to send us through to our fourteenth Final. European semi-finals We have played three European Semi-finals on this day over the years. 1976 - Phil Thompson netted in our 1-1 draw with Barcelona at Anfield in the second leg, with Carlos Rexach equalising two minutes later. However, this was enough to take us to our second UEFA Cup Final, after John Toshack’s winner in the Camp Nou. This game set our record home European attendance of 55,104 while Brian Hall was playing his 224th and final reds game. 1966 - Bobby Lennox gave Celtic a first leg lead in the European Cup Winners’ Cup, which we overcame in the Anfield return to reach our first European Final. Forward Phil Chisnall was playing his ninth and last reds game. 1971 - Billy Bremner struck as Leeds United won 1-0 at Anfield in the Fairs Cup, with the last of his five goals against the reds. A goalless draw in the return at Elland Road saw the Yorkshiremen through, where they beat Juventus in the two-legged final. Heading towards Basel 2016 – We staged a dramatic come-back at a raucous Anfield to beat Jürgen Klopp’s former charges Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund 4-3 on the night to reach the UEFA Europa League Semi-final 5-4 on aggregate. We fell two goals behind inside the opening ten minutes, while we still needed to score twice in the final twelve minutes after Divock Origi scored in his third consecutive reds game with Philippe Coutinho also on target as we trailed 3-2 on the night. Mamadou Sakho nodded in before his centre-back partner Dejan Lovren headed in an injury-time winner. Red centurions 2019 – Gini Wijnaldum played his hundredth League game for the reds as we beat Chelsea 2-0 at Anfield. Sadio Mané headed us in front after the break before Mohamed Salah scored a stunning strike in what was Jürgen Klopp's 200th game in charge. 1973 – Full-back Chris Lawler played his 500th reds game as we beat West Bromwich Albion 1-0 at Anfield, with Kevin Keegan on target from the spot. 1959 – We lost a Second Division encounter 1-0 at Sheffield Wednesday as Redfern Froggatt struck the last of his six goals past us, with inside-forward Jimmy Melia reaching a century of League games for the reds. Four apiece 2009 – We eventually drew 4-4 at Chelsea in the second leg of our Champions League Quarter-final to crash out 7-5 on aggregate. This was our 300th European game, and tenth meeting with Chelsea in continental competition, a new club record. We took a 2-0 half-time lead thanks to an innovative free-kick from Fábio Aurélio, his final reds strike, and a Xabi Alonso spot-kick. Didier Drogba embarrassed Pepe Reina at his near post to pull one back after the break, one of his eleven goals against the reds, with a thumping Alex free-kick drawing the scores level on the night, before Frank Lampard netted. A deflected strike from Lucas and Dirk Kuyt header left us needing just one more goal to progress. Unfortunately, another of Lampard’s eight goals past us then ended the scoring. International goalscorers 1951 - Billy Liddell struck as Scotland lost 3-2 to England at Wembley in the British International Championships. 2022 – Future red Trent Kone-Doherty bagged a brace, including one from the spot, as the Republic of Ireland beat North Macedonia 3-2 in a friendly, while winning his seventh and last Under-16’s cap. Tom the skipper 1934 - Future reds defender Tom Cooper captained England for the first time as they beat Scotland 3-0 in the British International Championships at Wembley. 1945 - Another red skippered his country, when Matt Busby represented Scotland as they were thumped 6-1 by England in a Wartime International at Hampden Park. Clubmate Jim Harley also played for the Scots. Red arrivals 1909 – Half-back John McConnell signed from Airdrieonians for £80. He netted just once in 53 first-team appearances leading up to the First World War, including one in goal in only his second game! 1897 – Welsh forward Billy Matthews was born in Plas Bennion. He netted eight times in thirteen Wartime games, signing from Colwyn Bay in 1918. He scored four times in nine outings before joining Bristol City in March 1922. Kenny steps down 1991 - Kenny Dalglish announced his resignation as reds boss in a press conference at Anfield. He had been in charge for nearly six years, leading us to the double in his first season, and a further two League titles, FA Cup, two FA Charity Shields and Screen Sport Super Cup. The pressures of management, and his role in counselling players, supporters and the city of Liverpool in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster led to him stepping down. Heading towards Istanbul 2005 - We beat Bayer 04 Leverkusen 3-1 at Anfield in the first leg of our Champions League round of sixteen tie. Luis García and John Arne Riise netted before Dietmar Hamann put us in a seemingly unassailable lead in stoppage time, with his eleventh and last reds goal. Anthony Le Tallec came off the bench to make his first senior appearance under Rafael Benítez. However, a Jerzy Dudek fumble handed Franca the chance to grab an away goal, which many commentators at the time felt might prove crucial. They were wrong. Spanish help against the Italians 2001 – We played an amazing UEFA Cup Fourth Round match against Roma at Anfield that we lost 1-0, although we still progressed to the Quarter-finals in a cauldron of noise. Michael Owen failed to convert his fifth penalty in eleven attempts as it was saved, and who could forget the penalty/corner incident when the ball struck Markus Babbel in the area? Fortunately, Spanish referee Jose Maria Garcia Aranda made the right decision! Uruguayan left-winger Gianni Guigou bagged the only goal of the game, with midfielder Damiano Tomassi sent off late on. On the same day, future red Ragnar Klavan played for Estonia Under-17’s. 2004 - Michael Owen also had a penalty saved as we lost our FA Cup Fifth Round replay 1-0 at Portsmouth, with Richard Hughes on target. Billy’s treble 1958 - Billy Liddell scored all our goals with a classic hat-trick of right- and left-foot strikes and a header in a Second Division match at Blackburn Rovers that ended 3-3. The game was goalless at half time, with four of the goals coming in a four-minute spell immediately after the break! Royston Stephenson netted one of his four goals past us, with Peter Dobing scoring the first of his eight and Bryan Douglas also on the scoresheet. 1997 - We also drew with Rovers, with our Anfield meeting ending goalless as Dominic Matteo’s late header came back off the bar. 1956 - More cruelly, the referee blew for full-time as Billy Liddell’s shot was on its way into the net, condemning us to a 2-1 home defeat against Manchester City in an FA Cup Fifth Round replay, with right-winger Jimmy Payne playing his 243rd and last reds game as right-winger Roy Saunders reached a century of reds outings. Alan Arnell had opened the scoring, with the eventual winner coming in the 89th minute. The groundsman had to paint the lines blue before kick-off due to the pitch being covered with snow. Both sides were wearing black armbands in honour of reds Chairman Will Harrop who had died suddenly the day before. 2009 – We were held to a 1-1 League draw at Anfield by Manchester City. Dirk Kuyt bagged the equaliser after ex-red Craig Bellamy’s strike took a wicked deflection off Álvaro Arbeloa for an own goal. Carra’s record 2000 - Jamie Carragher set a new record by winning his 23rd cap for England Under-21’s as they beat Argentina 1-0 in a friendly at Craven Cottage, with future red Joe Cole making his debut at this level. He went on to play 27 times in total, which remained a record until Scott Carson reached 28 in June 2007, although James Milner later reached 46. Jan the Welshman 1996 - Jan Mølby joined Swansea City as Player/Manager on a free transfer after nearly twelve years at Anfield. He had struck 61 times in 291 reds appearances, including a remarkable forty of his 42 attempted spot-kicks, helping us to three League titles, two FA Cups and the Screen Sport Super Cup. Another record for Cally 1969 - Ian Callaghan became our youngest post-War player to reach 300 League appearances, aged 26 years and 318 days. In and out 1954 – Salford-born full-back Tom McNulty signed from Manchester United for £7,000. He played 36 times for the reds without scoring, moving on to Hyde United in 1958. 1972 - Ian Ross was sold to Aston Villa for £60,000. He had struck four goals in 69 reds games but spent a large portion of his career skippering our Central League side. He captained Villa into the First Division, and then to League Cup glory in 1975. Most recently 2015 – We won 2-0 at Southampton, with Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling on target, with the home side claiming a series of spot kicks that were not given by the referee. He struck four times in 291 appearances after signing from Bury for £8,000 in January 1930. He returned to his native land in September 1938, joining Third Lanark. 1992 – Swedish centre-half Glenn Hysén played his 93rd and last reds game as we lost 3-0 at Norwich City. Robert Fleck bagged a brace with Colin Woodthorpe also on target. Half birthdays 1914 - Wing-half Tom Bush was born in Hodnet in Shropshire. He struck once in 69 reds appearances either side of the Second World War after signing from Shrewsbury Town in March 1933. He then moved behind the scenes, helping to bring youth players to the club and dealing with administration. 1872 – Half-back Bill Keech was born in Irthlingborough. He played just six Second Division games in late 1895, having signed from Barnsley St. Peter’s that October, helping us to claim the title that season. He later played as a forward for Leicester Fosse, before returning to the half-back line with Queens Park Rangers’ first professional team in the Southern League. 1946 – ‘Voice of Anfield’, George Sephton was born in Liverpool. He has been playing music and reading out team news at Anfield since August 1971. A rare defeat 1986 - We suffered our only home League defeat of the season as Bruce Grobbelaar let a long-range Kevin Ratcliffe effort squirm through his grasp, with Gary Lineker also netting one of his six strikes past us to give reigning champions Everton a 2-0 win at Anfield, leaving the Blues eight points ahead of the reds. Jan Mølby played the first half as a make-shift striker in the absence through injury of both Kenny Dalglish and Paul Walsh. Dalglish was presented with the Manager of the Month award prior to kick off. 1975 - We also entertained the Blues, with this game ending goalless. This ensured it became the only season to date in which both League derbies have finished without score. International beginnings and ends 1995 - Future red Markus Babbel made his full international debut in Germany’s goalless friendly draw in Spain. 1902 - Future red Richard Morris made his Welsh bow as they lost 3-0 to Ireland in Cardiff in the British International Championships. He had only made two senior appearances for the reds, both from off the bench in the League Cup. 2010 – Reserves left-back Robbie Threlfall joined Bradford City on loan. He netted twice in seventeen outings, going on to join the Bantams permanently three months later. 1997 - Nicolas Anelka joined Arsenal from Paris Saint-Germain for £500,000. He bagged 28 goals in 91 games for the Gunners, before being sold for £23m to Real Madrid. 2008 - Ex-reds reserves forward Paul Dalglish signed for Kilmarnock. He only played six times before retiring at the end of the season, having failed to find the back of the net. 2017 - Adam Lallana signed a new three-year contract, notching 22 times in 178 reds games since arriving from Southampton for £23m in July 2014 before moving on to Brighton & Hove Albion in July 2020 having helped the reds to claim the Premier League title and FIFA Club World Cup. 2021 – Defender Sean Wilson signed pro terms with the reds, having been at the Academy since the age of seven. However, he was released in the summer of 2022, joining Skelmersdale United that August. Other reds games 1947 – Albert Stubbins bagged the only goal of Huddersfield Town’s visit to L4. 1896 – We defeated Grimsby Town 3-1 in a home Second Division encounter. George Allan struck twice with Frank Becton also on target. Red fathers 2011 - Christian Poulsen became a father to Hugo, while ex-reds forward Paul Dalglish became a dad for the first time, to twins called Rocco and Coco. Roy on trial 1964 - Future red Roy Evans played for the North against the South in an England Schools trial in Staffordshire. David Hodgson made his first-class reds debut in this game. A sponsored run-out 1979 - We became the first English club to wear sponsored shirts when Hitachi was emblazoned on the red kit for the first time during a goalless draw with Bolton Wanderers at Anfield. New men in charge 1991 - David Moores became Chairman of the club. He showed patience towards the Managers he employed to lead the reds, while largely staying out of the limelight favoured by some club chairmen. He sold his stake in the club to George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks in February 2007, becoming Honorary Life President, although he resigned from the Board in June 2009 after this had proven to be a terrible mistake. 2015 – Ex-reds centre-half Sami Hyypiä was appointed Manager of Zürich, being sacked nine months later as they were on their way to relegation. In comes Soto 2009 – Greek centre-half Sotirios Kyrgiakos signed from A.E.K Athens for £2m, following the summer departure of Sami Hyypiä. Soto bagged three goals in 49 largely solid performances at the back, becoming something of a cult figure for his no-nonsense style before moving to VfL Wolfsburg on a free transfer two years later. On the same day, reserves left-back Robbie Threlfall joined Northampton Town on loan. He turned out five times in his one month with the Cobblers. New reds 1987 - Mike Marsh signed on at Anfield, joining on a free transfer from Kirkby Town. He netted six times in 101 first-team games for the reds, before moving to West Ham United in September 1993 as part of the deal that brought Julian Dicks to Anfield. He is now a First Team Coach back at Anfield. 1941 – Centre-forward Arthur Shepherd signed for the reds. He was on the Anfield books at the same time as his brothers Joseph and full-back Bill. He struck twelve times in eleven wartime games, but never appeared for the reds in peacetime. 1874 – Forward Joe Lumsden was born in Tanfield. He signed from Burton Wanderers in June 1897, scoring twice in just eight senior outings before moving on to Glossop North End in May 1898. Seeing red for City 2004 - Richard Dunne was sent off for Manchester City as they lost 2-1 at Anfield in our first home game under Rafael Benítez, with our goals coming from Milan Baroš and Steven Gerrard. This was the first time in over five years that we had triumphed in a League game after trailing at half-time, to a Nicolas Anelka strike, one of his five goals past us. The wrong kind of treble 2000 - Dietmar Hamann, Gary McAllister and Arsenal’s Patrick Vieira were all sent off as we lost 2-0 at Highbury. Hamann’s red card was later rescinded. Thierry Henry netted the first of his nine goals past us, after Lauren had opened the scoring. Macca off the mark 1991 - Steve McManaman scored his first official reds goal as we lost 2-1 at Manchester City, with Dean Saunders missing a penalty. Mark Wright was injured in this game, and subsequently missed the next 21 games. David White bagged a brace for City, the first two of his five strikes past us, a feat he repeated in the reverse fixture later that season. A striking debut 1976 - New £200,000 record signing David Johnson made his reds bow as we beat Norwich City 1-0 at Anfield, thanks to a Steve Heighway goal. Cyril’s century 1951 – Forward Cyril Done reached a century of reds senior games in our goalless top-flight draw with Burnley at Turf Moor. 2021 – We beat Burnley 2-0 at Anfield, in front of a sell-out crowd for the first time since March 2020, due to previous COVID restrictions. Espanyol player as they lost 3-2 to Stéphane Henchoz’s Switzerland in a friendly in Basel. 2007 – Future red Joe Allen scored on his debut for Wales Under-21’s as they won a friendly 4-3 in Sweden. On the same day, future reds loanee Victor Moses nabbed a brace as England Under-17’s thumped New Zealand 5-0 in a World Championship Finals group game in South Korea, with future red James Milner playing for England Under-21’s. Three for the boss 1943 - Future reds boss Don Welsh bagged a treble as we beat Everton 5-2 in a wartime friendly at Goodison Park. Billy Liddell and Jack Balmer added our others. Robbie again 2002 - Robbie Keane netted in his fourth consecutive international, winning his final cap as a Leeds United player as the Republic of Ireland won a friendly in Finland 3-0. Sami Hyypiä, Jari Litmanen and ex-red Jason McAteer all also featured, with the latter captaining the side as he won his fiftieth cap, although some counts place this as his 49th due to a disputed game against a Mexico XI in 2000. Bruno l’international 2002 - Bruno Cheyrou made his senior international debut for France, as a late substitute for Lilian Thuram in their 1-1 draw with Tunisia in Rades. Future red Djibril Cissé also featured. On the same day, Øyvind Leonhardsen won his final cap as a Tottenham Hotspur player, and 79th in total, as Norway lost 1-0 to the Netherlands in a friendly in Oslo. John Arne Riise and future red Bolo Zenden also played. Christian Poulsen won his first cap while with Schalke 04 as Denmark beat Scotland 1-0 at Hampden Park.
