Happy birthdays 1961 - Ronnie Whelan was born in Dublin. He signed from Home Farm for £35,000 in September 1979 and played 493 times in his fifteen years with the reds, netting 73 times and winning six League titles, one European Cup, two FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields before joining Southend United for free in September 1994. 1920 - Right-back Bill Shepherd was born in Liverpool.
