Double reds debutants 1974 - Reds legends Terry McDermott and Phil Neal both made their reds debuts as we held Everton to a goalless draw at Goodison Park. 1907 – Winger Harold Uren debuted as we drew 1-1 with Manchester City at Hyde Road, with inside-left Bill McPherson on target. Four for Jack 1946 - Jack Balmer bagged all four goals in our 4-1 win at Derby County. This was the second of his three hat-tricks in consecutive games. His third goal was his fiftieth reds strike, while Raich Carter’s late consolation was the last of his six strikes against the reds. Billy’s record 1957 – Billy Liddell played his 431st League game for the reds as we lost a Second Division encounter 3-1 at Ipswich Town, a new club record. He went on to make 492 League appearances for the club in total. Johnny Wheeler struck for the reds, with Ted Phillips bagging the first two of his five goals past us and Tommy Garneys also netting. Against the Owls We have twice faced Sheffield Wednesday in First Division encounters on this day in history, without being beaten. 1968 - We won 2-1 at Hillsborough with Chris Lawler and Ian Callaghan on target. 1986 - Ian Rush netted a minute after Lee Chapman bagged one of his six strikes against the reds as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. In comes Kevin 1984 – Scottish midfielder Kevin MacDonald signed from Leicester City for £400,000. He played 64 reds games, scoring five times, helping us to the League and FA Cup double in 1986, with skipper Alan Hansen calling him “far and away our most influential player.” He moved to Coventry City in June 1989 after a number of loan spells away from Anfield while recovering from a broken leg. International debutants 2007 - Scott Carson won his first senior cap, with Peter Crouch bagging the only goal of England’s friendly against future red Alex Manninger in Austria. Future red James Milner converted a penalty past Nikolay Mihaylov for England Under-21’s on the same day. 2003 – Future red Glen Johnson made his senior international bow as Danny Murphy won his ninth and last cap, with David James winning his final cap as a West Ham United player, and his 21st in total, in England’s 3-2 friendly defeat by Denmark at Old Trafford. Joe Cole bagged his first international goal as a Chelsea player, with Emile Heskey also featuring, while Jerzy Dudek also played in a friendly that day. 2022 – Calvin Ramsay won his first senior cap for Steve Clarke’s Scotland as Andy Robertson skippered them to a 2-1 friendly defeat in Türkiye, with Ozan Kabak on target for the first time for his country as he featured for the first time since joining TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Ex-red Dejan Lovren and future red Alexis Mac Allister also featured in friendlies that day ahead of the World Cup Finals. 2002 – Future red Jermaine Pennant made his debut for England Under-18’s in their 3-2 friendly defeat of Belgium in Bradford. 2010 – Future red Steven Caulker made his debut for England Under-21’s in their 2-0 defeat to Germany in Wiesbaden, with Martin Kelly also in action. 1994 - Steve McManaman and Neil Ruddock both played their first senior internationals as England beat Nigeria 1-0 at Wembley. It was to be Ruddock’s only full cap, while McManaman went on to win 37. John Barnes, Rob Jones and ex-red Peter Beardsley all also played. 1988 - Future red Michael Thomas made his England debut as they were held to a 1-1 friendly draw in Saudi Arabia. Peter Beardsley also played. John Aldridge, Ray Houghton and Steve Staunton all featured as the Republic of Ireland lost a World Cup qualifier 2-0 in Spain on the same day. Red endings 1935 – South African forward Lance Carr bagged his eighth and final reds goal in our 3-1 top-flight defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Tom Smalley bagged a brace, with Billy Wrigglesworth also on target for the home side. 1929 – Bill Murray struck his only reds goal as we won 3-2 at Aston Villa. Jim Smith also netted with Tommy Mort putting through his own net for us. George Brown netted one of his nine goals against the reds, with Joe Beresford scoring one of his four past us. 1949 – Future red Sammy Smyth scored his last goal for Ireland as they were thumped 9-2 by England at Maine Road in a British International Championships game that also counted as a World Cup qualifier. 2021 – Forward Louis Bimpson died. He scored 39 goals in his 102 first-team appearances after signing on a free transfer from Burscough in January 1953. He moved on to Blackburn Rovers in November 1959. Red birth 1964 – Forward David West was born. He signed from his hometown club Dorchester Town for £15,000 in March 1983. He made it to the first-team bench on two occasions without ever making a senior appearance, moving on to Torquay United in September 1985. Up against Rushie 1996 - We won 2-0 at Leeds United thanks to goals from Neil Ruddock nabbing his twelfth and last reds goal and Steve McManaman also on target. Thumping the Baggies 1985 – Transfer-listed Paul Walsh set up Steve Nicol, Jan Mølby and Mark Lawrenson to score before himself netting as we beat West Bromwich Albion 4-1 in a top-flight fixture, after Garth Crooks had headed the Baggies in front, their most recent Anfield goal prior to April 2012, one of his four goals against the reds. Ex-red Graeme Souness was in the crowd for this game. Scottish fame 2008 - Billy Liddell and Ian St. John were both inducted into Scotland’s Hall of Fame. Liddell had bagged eight goals in 29 outings for his country, while the Saint netted nine times while winning 21 caps. Jari at the double 1994 - Ajax’s Jari Litmanen grabbed a brace in Finland’s 5-0 European Championships qualifying thumping of the Faroe Islands in Helsinki. More internationals in action 1932 – Future red Ernie Blenkinsop played for England in their goalless British International Championships meeting with Wales in Wrexham. 1966 – Roger Hunt appeared in England’s 5-1 European Championships qualifying thumping of Wales at Wembley. 1982 – Future reds John Barnes, Steve McMahon, Barry Venison and Paul Walsh all featured for England Under-21’s in their 1-0 defeat in Greece in a European Championships qualifier. 2015 – Future red Dominic Solanke played as England Under-21’s beat Switzerland 3-1 in Brighton. 2020 – Future red Ibrahima Konaté played for France Under-21’s as they beat Switzerland 3-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Caen. 2021 – Ex-red Rhian Brewster captained England Under-21’s as they lost a friendly 3-2 in Georgia, despite having been sent off in his previous appearance at this level. Happy birthday Gini 1990 – Dutch midfielder Gini Wijnaldum was born in Rotterdam. He moved to Anfield for an initial £23m in July 2016, notching 22 times in 237 games and helping us to claim the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup before he moved on to Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in July 2021. Future red Jari Litmanen played for Finland on the same day as they won a friendly 2-1 in Tunisia. 2005 – Scottish winger Ben Doak was born in Dalry. He signed from Celtic in March 2022, making his senior bow against Derby County in the League Cup eight months later and turning pro later that month. He made eight senior appearances by the time of his eighteenth birthday. In comes Tosh 1970 - John Toshack signed from his hometown club Cardiff City for a club record £110,000. He scored 96 goals in 247 reds appearances, helping us to three League titles, two UEFA Cups, the FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before returning to Wales to join Swansea City as Player/Manager in February 1978. Joe’s treble 1905 - Forward Joe Hewitt scored his first of his five reds hat-tricks as we won 5-1 at Middlesbrough, our biggest ever win on Teesside. Inside-forward John Carlin added a brace. Joe’s brother Charlie, who later joined the reds, struck for the home side. Double century for Kenny 1980 – Kenny Dalglish played his 200th reds game as we beat Coventry City 2-1 in a League fixture at Anfield, thanks to a David Johnson brace. Still a red 2003 - Steven Gerrard signed a new contract to keep him at Anfield until 2007. He remained a red, until May 2015, scoring 186 times in total in 710 outings and helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups and three League Cups as well as winning the PFA and Football Writers’ Player of the Year awards once apiece. 2020 – Left-back Owen Beck signed a new contract, having turned pro just four months earlier. He joined the Academy from Stoke City at Under-13’s level, making his senior bow as a late substitute in our League Cup Fourth Round win at Preston North End in October 2021. Le Boss taken ill 2001 - Gérard Houllier was admitted to Broadgreen Hospital with chest pains during our Anfield fixture with Leeds United. Thankfully he went on to make a full recovery. First ever Merseyside derby 1894 - We played Everton for the first time in a senior game, unfortunately going down 3-0 at Goodison Park in our ninth ever game in the top flight, at the end of which we were still seeking our first win at that level. First, current club owners George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks obtained a Temporary Restraining Order from a Texas District Court to stop the sale of the club to NESV, before the High Court ruled against Gillett and Hicks. Future reds boss Don Welsh netted for the visitors, having previously done so against us before the Second World War! 1907 - Harold Fitzpatrick scored on his reds debut to hand us a 1-0 home victory over Sunderland in another top-flight encounter as outside-right Arthur Goddard played his 200th reds game, while left-half Samuel Hignett made his only senior appearance for the club. Fastest treble 2022 – Mohamed Salah scored the fastest hat-trick in UEFA Champions League history, taking just six minutes and twelve seconds to net three times in our groups stage game at Rangers. Scott Arfield gave the home side the lead, but we romped home as 7-1 winners with Roberto Firmino netting either side of the break before Darwin Núñez scored. Salah then arrived from the bench to grab his treble, with Harvey Elliott completing the scoring. Another record for Michael 2002 - Michael Owen scored his nineteenth England goal, more than any other red in history until it was equalled by Steven Gerrard in August 2010, in his 43rd game as they beat Slovakia 2-1 in their Euro 2004 qualifier in Bratislava. Europe’s best 1978 – The reds were named as European team of the year at a ceremony in Paris, having retained the European Cup at Wembley earlier that year. Reds come into the world 1867 - Right-half Rab Howell was born in Sheffield. He went on to become the only true Romany to play for England, playing 67 reds games without scoring after signing from Sheffield United for £200 in April 1898. He left for Preston North End in June 1901. 1897 - Forward Sam Bowyer was born in Northwich. He signed from Earlestown in March 1907, grabbing sixteen goals in 48 reds games before leaving for Bedminster in 1912. 1987 - Former reserves attacking midfielder Besian Idrizaj was born in Baden in Austria. He was actually a Kosovan-Albanian and was voted the best young player in the Austrian equivalent of the Championship shortly before moving to England. He signed from Linzer ASK for an initial £190,000 in August 2005 and made his first senior appearance in our friendly at Crewe Alexandra back in July 2006, netting a treble at Wrexham a year later, but failed to make the first-team squad, sadly dying aged just 22 in May 2010. Sammy the champion 1982 - Sammy Lee skippered England Under-21’s as they lost 3-2 to West Germany in Bremen in the second leg of the Final of the European Championships. Mixed fortunes against the Mancs We have faced Manchester United three times on this day in history. 1996 - David Beckham netted the only goal of the game at Old Trafford. 1968 - We beat the European Champions 2-0 at Anfield when Ian St. John and Alun Evans struck. 1895 - We thumped Newton Heath as they were then known 7-1 at home, with two apiece from Frank Becton, Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw and Fred Geary, and a goal from Jimmy Ross. Losing the European Cup 1978 - We lost our grip on the European Cup, being held to a goalless draw at Anfield by League champions Nottingham Forest, with ex-red Larry Lloyd dominant in the visitors’ defence. He netted 285 times in 492 reds games after signing from Stockton Heath in July 1958, with his 245 League goals still a club record, and he has the distinction of being the first red to win the World Cup while at Anfield. His club medal haul includes two League championships, FA Cup, Second Division title and FA Charity Shield. Another Istanbul comeback 2006 - We raced into a 3-0 lead against Galatasaray in our UEFA Champions League group game at Anfield, thanks to a goal from Luis García surrounded by a stunning Peter Crouch brace that included an overhead bicycle kick. He went on to make 32 appearances in two seasons with the Owls before signing for Conference side Chester City on a free transfer. World stars 2009 – Keeper Dean Bouzanis played for Australia Under-20’s in the World Championship Finals in Egypt as they lost 2-1 to the Czech Republic. Meanwhile, Péter Gulácsi, Krisztián Nemeth and András Simon all featured in Hungary’s 3-0 defeat by Honduras in the same competition. A friendly trip to Sweden 1977 - We played IFK Göteborg in a friendly with David Fairclough adding a brace to a strike from Jimmy Case in our 3-2 win. For Tom 1920 – A benefit game was staged for inside-right Tom Bennett against an International XI at Anfield. He had struck 77 times in seventy wartime games, but only made one first-class appearance before ill health forced his early retirement. He sadly died from tuberculosis in January 1923, aged just 31. He arrived for £3.5m from Blackburn Rovers in June 1999, and made a total of 205 appearances without scoring, forming a rock-solid partnership with Sami Hyypiä and helping us to claim five trophies in 2001 as well as another League Cup two years later. He joined Celtic on a free transfer in January 2005, and spent a season playing for Premiership new boys Wigan Athletic, before returning to Ewood Park for two injury-hit seasons. 1993 – Midfielder Kevin Stewart was born in Enfield. He arrived from Tottenham Hotspur in July 2014 on a free transfer, making twenty senior reds appearances without scoring before joining Hull City in July 2017. 1988 – Ex-reserves striker Craig Lindfield was born in Greasby on the Wirral peninsula. Trigger pulled 1995 - Birkenhead-born Jason McAteer signed from Bolton Wanderers for £4.5m, which was still their record transfer fee received until Nicolas Anelka’s £15m departure for Chelsea in January 2008, just five months after impressing against the reds in the Coca Cola Cup Final. He bagged six goals in his 139 reds games before joining Blackburn Rovers for £4m in January 1999. Four against the blues 1935 - Centre-forward Fred Howe scored four goals in our 6-0 triumph in the Anfield derby with Gordon Hodgson adding a brace. Happy birthdays 1938 - Legendary centre-forward ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt was born in Golborne, Lancashire. He netted 285 times in 492 reds games after signing from Stockton Heath in July 1958. His 245 League goals remain a club record, and he has the distinction of being the first red to win the World Cup while at Anfield. His club medal haul includes two League championships, FA Cup, Second Division title and FA Charity Shield. 1966 - Hunt bagged both goals as England beat France 2-0 in a World Cup Finals group game at Wembley, on his 28th birthday. Clubmate Ian Callaghan also played, winning only his second cap. 1948 - Reserves keeper Frank Lane was born in Wallasey. He signed from Tranmere Rovers for £15,000 in September 1971, but only made two first-team appearances, deputising for Ray Clemence. Unfortunately, he distinguished himself for all the wrong reasons on his debut in September 1972 by safely catching a deep cross from Derby County’s Alan Hinton and then stepping backwards over his own goal-line, to help us on our way to a 2-1 defeat. New signings 2005 - Peter Crouch signed from Southampton for £7m on a four-year contract. He failed to score in his first nineteen reds games, but went on to bag thirteen goals in his final thirty games of his first season, helping us to claim the FA Cup in May. He went on to score 42 times in 134 outings in total before being sold to Portsmouth for a fee of up to £11m in July 2008. 2016 – Estonian centre-half Ragnar Klavan signed from Augsburg for £4.2m. He struck twice in 53 outings before moving on to Cagliari for £2m in August 2018. Keeping no more 2007 - Jerzy Dudek signed for Real Madrid after 186 reds appearances, helping us to glory in Istanbul, as well as the Worthington Cup in 2003. He has so only played fourteen times in cup competitions for the Foxes across his first four campaigns. He had signed from Crvena Zvezda for £5.1m in January 2016, immediately being loaned back for the rest of the season. He struck once in sixteen senior reds appearances. Shanks departs 1974 - Bill Shankly resigned as Manager after fifteen years in charge, leaving reds fans bemused and shocked. He had led us to three League titles, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups and the Second Division championship. His final significant act as boss was to sign Arsenal forward Ray Kennedy for a club record fee of £180,000, announced the very same day. Razor went on to net 72 times in 393 reds games, helping us to claim six League titles, three European Cups, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields before joining John Toshack’s Swansea City in January 1982. The Wright signing 1991 - Mark Wright arrived from Derby County for £2.2m. With Alan Hansen retired, Glenn Hysén soon to go and Gary Gillespie moving on to Celtic, we were in dire need of a quality centre-back, and Wright was drafted in after his impressive displays for England at the 1990 World Cup. He notched nine times in 210 reds appearances and lifted the FA Cup at Wembley in 1992 before retiring from playing in August 1998. Yossi signs on 2007 - Yossi Benayoun signed from West Ham United for £5m. He bagged 29 goals in 134 reds games, including hat-tricks against Beşiktaş JK, Havant & Waterlooville and Burnley, leaving for Chelsea for the same fee in July 2010. On the same day, second string winger Adam Hammill joined Southampton on loan. He made 28 appearances for the Saints that season, half of them from off the bench, without getting on the scoresheet. Meanwhile, ex-red Vladimír Šmicer signed for SK Slavia Praha. He helped his new club won their first title in twelve years, with Vlad once again suffering with injuries as he struck five times in 23 League games before retiring in May 2010. More arrivals 2002 - Bruno Cheyrou was confirmed as a reds player after receiving international clearance, joining from Lille OSC Métropole for £3.7m. He struck five times in 48 reds games before moving to Stade Rennais in June 2006, after previous loan spells with Olympique de Marseille and Girondins de Bordeaux. 2009 – Reserves left-back Chris Mavinga signed from Paris Saint-Germain. On the same day, Jack Robinson featured as England lost out to Greece at the same stage. 2015 – Future red Kostas Tsimikas played for Greece Under-19’s in their 2-0 home defeat by France in a group encounter. 2016 – Future red Dominic Solanke scored for England Under-19’s as they beat France 2-1 in a group game in Germany. Sheyi Ojo and Jordan Rossiter both also featured. Bowyer on his way 2002 - It was announced that a fee had been agreed with Leeds United for the controversial capture of midfielder Lee Bowyer. He was expected to sign on at Anfield the following week, although the deal fell through after Gérard Houllier grew uncomfortable with the player’s attitude and level of commitment to Liverpool. Red learnings 2000 - Liverpool’s ground-breaking Study Support centre in the Kop stand was officially opened by Professor Michael Barber, Head of the Government’s Standards & Effectiveness Unit for Education. Title number five 1947 - We clinched our fifth League title when Stoke City lost 2-1 at Sheffield United. We therefore finished one point ahead of Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers, and two ahead of the Potters. The news came through on the day that we clinched the Liverpool Senior Cup by beating Everton 2-1, thanks to goals from Jack Balmer and William Watkinson. The match was actually halted five minutes from time so that director George Richards could address the crowd by loudspeaker with the news. RIP Gordon Hodgson 1951 - Legendary forward Gordon Hodgson died of cancer in Burslem. He had bagged a club record seventeen hat-tricks amongst his 241 goals in 377 games after signing from Transvaal in November 1925. He could not claim a club medal in his time at Anfield, moving on to Aston Villa in January 1936 for £3,000. In comes Darwin 2022 - Darwin Núñez signed from SL Benfica for an initial £64.2m. He was on target as he came off the bench to help us claim the FA Community Shield on his debut, bagging a total of fifteen goals in 42 outings in his first campaign. Happy birthdays 1857 – The club’s first Manager, William Barclay, was born in the Kilmainham Auxiliary of the South Dublin Workhouse. He worked as a Secretary-c**-Manager for the first four years of the club’s existence, having previously been Vice Chairman of Everton. 1878 – Outside-right Arthur Goddard was born in Heaton Norris, Stockport. Scott’s record 2007 - Scott Carson equalled the record number of England Under-21’s caps by claiming his 27th, to move level with both Jamie Carragher and Gareth Barry. Ronnie Whelan, who had scored twice in the previous season’s Final, won the game for us with a beautifully curled shot past the helpless Gary Bailey. Bob Paisley was sent up to lift the trophy in his final season as boss. King Kenny’s centuries 1986 - Kenny Dalglish skippered Scotland while winning his hundredth cap in a 3-0 friendly defeat of Romania at Hampden Park. Alan Hansen and ex-red Graeme Souness both also played. On the same day, future red Mark Wright captained England as they beat the USSR 1-0 in a friendly in Tblisi. Fellow future red Peter Beardsley also played. Wembley win 1980 - A Terry McDermott goal gave us the FA Charity Shield against FA Cup holders West Ham United at Wembley in the traditional curtain-raiser to the season. This was our fifth outright Shield win, retaining it after also having won it the previous season, while the goal was our 6,000th in all competitions. Bruce makes his bow 1981 - Bruce Grobbelaar made his first reds appearance in our 3-0 win at Zürich. Kenny Dalglish and Ray Kennedy netted, with Phil Neal converting a penalty. The game was due to be played the day before, but torrential rain had made the pitch unplayable. Management debuts 1947 – Former reds boss Roy Hodgson was born in Croydon. He arrived from Fulham in July 2010, only leading us to thirteen victories in his 31 games matches in charge, leaving “by mutual consent” six months later. 2010 – Ex-reds midfielder Kevin MacDonald was appointed Caretaker Manager of Aston Villa after Martin O’Neill’s sudden departure. He took charge of them for seven games until Gérard Houllier’s arrival. Ton up 2019 – Divock Origi played his hundredth reds game as we beat Norwich City 4-1 at Anfield in our opening League fixture of a triumphant campaign. All our goals came before the break, with Grant Hanley turning an Origi cross into his own net before Mohamed Salah struck. Virgil van Dijk and Origi then both headed in either side of an injury sustained by Alisson Becker that brought the debut of Adrián. Teemu Pukki bagged a second-half consolation for the visitors. Quick off the mark 2006 - Craig Bellamy and Mark González both scored on their reds debuts as we came from behind to beat Maccabi Haifa 2-1 in the first leg of our Champions League qualifier at Anfield. This was the first time a pair of debutants had scored since a 3-0 defeat of Bury in August 1928, with Jermaine Pennant also making his official reds bow as Sami Hyypiä played his fiftieth game in the competitions for the reds. Fabio starts out 2012 - Fabio Borini struck his first reds goal as we beat Belarusian side Gomel 3-0 in our UEFA Europa League Third Qualifying Round second leg encounter at Anfield. Steven Gerrard scored his 150th goal for the club, with Glen Johnson also netting. Multiple debutants 2015 – Centre-forward Christian Benteke, right-back Nathaniel Clyne, forward Roberto Firmino, defender Joe Gomez and midfielder James Milner all made their reds bows as a late Philippe Coutinho strike earned us a 1-0 victory at Stoke City in the opening game of the season, just eleven weeks after our 6-1 humiliation at the same venue. 1997 – Paul Ince and Danny Murphy made their first-class reds debuts in our 1-1 draw with Wimbledon at Selhurst Park. Karl-Heinz Riedle also made his reds bow, aged 31 years and 328 days, a then club record for our oldest debutant. Michael Owen scored from the spot. Heading off 1982 – Forward David Johnson re-joined Everton for £100,000 after 78 times in 213 reds games. He had arrived at Anfield from Ipswich Town in August 1976 for a record £200,000 fee, and went on to win three League titles, European Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields, as well as becoming the first player to score for both sides in the Merseyside derby. 2013 – Midfielder Jay Spearing joined Bolton Wanderers, having spent a successful season on loan with the Trotters. He had graduated to Melwood in the summer of 2007 after captaining the reds as they retained the FA Youth Cup that May. He made 55 senior reds appearances without finding the back of the net. 2018 – Danny Ings joined Southampton on loan for the season, making the move permanent for an initial £18m fee in July 2019. He had only struck four times in 25 games since signing from Burnley in July 2015 as he suffered two serious injuries. Backing Michael 2005 - Rafael Benítez backed Michael Shields, ahead of our game against CSKA Sofia in Bulgaria, saying, “We support Michael Shields’ family and we also support the family of Martin Georgiev. It is up to the court to decide what to do with Michael, but we hope to see him back in England soon.” He was eventually pardoned and released in September 2009. Testimonials 1996 - Our most recent testimonial fixture on this day was held in honour of Jan Mølby in front of a crowd of just 8,316. PSV Eindhoven provided the opposition, leaving Anfield having won 3-2 with Mølby playing just under an hour. Stan Collymore was on target with Stig Inge Bjørnebye also heading a goal after we had gone three goals behind, while the eventual winning goal came from second half substitute Bolo Zenden. Robbie Fowler had to be substituted on the referee’s advice after an ugly confrontation with PSV’s Bjorn van der Doelen. 1993 - A testimonial for Ronnie Whelan was played at Anfield with Newcastle United providing the opposition. Neil Ruddock scored the only goal of the game, his first for the reds. He also broke ex-red Peter Beardsley’s cheekbone in a collision. 1987 - We travelled north of the border to face Celtic in a match in aid of their legendary player Tommy Burns, with the reds running out 1-0 winners thanks to a goal from Ronnie Whelan. Chelsea at Anfield 1969 - We kicked off our season with a 4-1 defeat of Chelsea at Anfield in what was Bill Shankly’s 400th League game in charge of the reds. Ian St. John bagged a brace, with our other goals being scored by Chris Lawler and Geoff Strong. A right Charlie 2007 - Keeper Charles Itandje signed from Racing Club de Lens. He made seven appearances in the cups in his first season, but failed to impress, conceding ten goals and only keeping one clean sheet, eventually departing for Greek side P.A.E. A.P.S. Atromitos Athens in January 2011. Red strikers going free 1979 - A young Peter Beardsley signed for Carlisle United having been released by Newcastle United. He scored 29 times in 126 appearances for the Cumbrians before being sold to Vancouver Whitecaps in April 1982 for £275,000. 2002 - Former reserves forward Paul Dalglish joined Blackpool from Norwich City on a free transfer. He could only score twice in thirty games for the Seasiders, before moving on again, this time to Linfield. Happy birthdays 1884 – Full-back Sam Speakman was born in Huyton. He signed from amateur side Colne in 1912 but could only play 26 first-team games without scoring before joining South Liverpool in 1920. 2002 – Left-back Owen Beck was born in Wrexham. He joined the Academy from Stoke City at Under-13’s level, signing his first professional contract in June 2020. Another friendly 2021 – Takumi Minamino scored before Roberto Firmino bagged a brace as we beat Club Atlético Osasuna 3-1 in an Anfield friendly in front of a 75% capacity crowd, post-COVID. Christian off the mark 2011 – Future red Christian Benteke bagged a brace as Belgium Under-21’s lost 3-2 to Turkey in a friendly, his first goals at this level. Also on the move 2019 – Centre-half Martin Škrtel signed for Atalanta from Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü, but his contract was terminated by mutual consent after just three weeks, moving back to Turkey to join İstanbul Başakşehir. 2007 - Luis Suárez joined Ajax from Groningen for €7.5m, having bagged fifteen goals in 37 games since arriving in the Netherlands the previous summer. 2002 - Academy starlet Neil Prince joined Torquay United on a free transfer, after failing to break into the first team at Anfield. Also in international action 1996 – Future red John Arne Riise played for Norway Under-15’s as they drew 1-1 with the Republic of Ireland. 2000 – Future red Fábio Aurélio featured for Brazil as they won a friendly 5-3 in Chile. 2015 – Kamil Grabara won his fifth and last cap for Poland Under-16’s as they lost 1-0 in Sweden, although the match is also credited as being at Under-17’s level. -
Final joy and despair 2010 - Fernando Torres and ex-red Xabi Alonso helped Spain to a 1-0 defeat of the Netherlands in the World Cup Final in Johannesburg, with Dirk Kuyt on the losing side. 2021 – England drew 1-1 with Italy in the European Championships Final at Wembley, but lost out on penalties. Jordan Henderson came on as a substitute and was later himself replaced, with ex-red Raheem Sterling also in action. In comes Dom 2017 – Forward Dominic Solanke signed from Chelsea, finally netting his first senior goal in his 27th and last outing as we thumped Brighton & Hove Albion 4-0 at Anfield in May 2018, moving on to Bournemouth for £19m in January 2019. Departures 2008 – Peter Crouch was sold to Portsmouth for a fee of up to £11m, after 42 goals in 134 outings since his £7m capture from Southampton in July 2005. He netted sixteen times in 49 games in his second spell with Pompey before moving back to Tottenham Hotspur for around £9m a year later. 1933 – Full-back Tommy Lucas left the reds for Clapton Orient. He had signed from Alexandra Victoria in 1916 and played 366 reds games, netting three times, winning one League title and captaining England in his time at Anfield. 2016 – Right-back Fred Perry died. He signed from Worthing in July 1954, but made just one senior appearance before joining Sittingbourne in January 1957. Winning run comes to an end 2020 – We were held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley behind closed doors at Anfield, ending a record run of 24 consecutive home League victories. Andy Robertson put the reds in front before the break, but Jay Rodriguez equalised in the second half, the latest of his four goals past us to date. Happy birthday Titi 1972 - Aboubakar ‘Titi’ Camara was born in Conakry, Guinea. He scored ten times in 37 reds games after signing from Olympique de Marseille for £2.6m in June 1999, most famously the only goal of the game at home to West Ham United on the day his father died in October of that year. He was sold to the Hammers for £2.2m in December 2000, although he only made fourteen appearances for them, before being loaned to Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia. 1931 - Centre-half Fred Tomley was born in Liverpool. He signed from Litherland in September 1953 but only made two senior appearances before joining Chester in July 1955. More red arrivals 2008 – Brazilian keeper Diego Cavalieri signed from Palmeiras for £3.5m. He only made ten senior appearances, keeping four clean sheets, but sat on the bench on a further 103 occasions. He moved to Cesena for £1.2m in August 2010. 1934 – Keeper Stanley Kane signed on at Anfield. He only played six first-team games before leaving for Southend United in April 1936. At the World Cup 1966 - Roger Hunt played in England’s goalless draw with Uruguay at Wembley, the opening game of their victorious World Cup campaign. 2018 – Dejan Lovren reached the World Cup Final as Croatia beat England 2-1 after extra time in their Semi-final in Moscow, with Jordan Henderson and ex-red Raheem Sterling on the losing side. Off the mark 2019 - Rhian Brewster scored his first two senior goals as we thumped Tranmere Rovers 6-0 at Prenton Park in our opening pre-season friendly, with Bobby Duncan netting while playing for the senior side for the first time. Nathaniel Clyne, Curtis Jones and Divock Origi also scored as forward Paul Glatzel, keeper Vítězslav Jaroš and left-backs Yasser Larouci and Adam Lewis featured for the first-team for the first time. Also debuting at this level was keeper Daniel Atherton, who actually came on as a forward! New club channel 2007 - The launch of the club’s own TV channel, LFC TV was announced. This was the result of a three-year deal with Setanta. Rick Parry said, “The channel heralds a new era for Liverpool Football Club. We always welcome the opportunity to engage with our fantastic fan-base and LFC TV will bring them closer to the club and the team they love, at what is a very exciting time both on and off the pitch.” Kevin and out 2015 – Midfielder Kevin Stewart signed a new contract with the club, joining Swindon Town on loan on the same day. He played seven times for the Robins before returning to Anfield, going on to play twenty senior reds games before being sold to Hull City for a reported £6m in July 2017. 2016 – Keeper Danny Ward signed a new contract with the reds and then joined Championship side Huddersfield Town on loan for the season. He made 46 senior outings for the Terriers, saving a spot-kick as they were promoted to the top flight via a penalty shoot-out in the Play-off Final at Wembley. Luis at the treble 2012 – Luis Suárez scored a hat-trick as the Uruguay Olympic XI beat a Chile Under-25’s side 6-4 in Maldonado, with clubmate Sebastian Coates also in action. Heading off 2006 - Dietmar Hamann officially joined Bolton Wanderers for £500,000. However, he moved on to Manchester City before the ink was dry on his contract. Meanwhile, Chris Kirkland joined Wigan Athletic on loan. He signed permanently in October 2006, playing 134 times for the Latics in total, again suffering from injuries before moving to Sheffield Wednesday in May 2012. Also that day, ex-reds winger Mark Kennedy joined Crystal Palace on a free transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers. He turned out 48 times for the Eagles, grabbing just one goal before being released in May 2008. 2022 – Welsh right-back Neco Williams was sold to Nottingham Forest for a reported £17m, having played 33 reds games, helping us to claim the Premier League title. Ex-reds on the move 1991 - John Aldridge joined Tranmere Rovers from Real Sociedad for £250,000. He scored 174 times for them in 295 appearances and was also their Manager for five years. 1996 - Nigel Spackman joined First Division Sheffield United as a player, and as Assistant Manager to Howard Kendall. He played 27 times in his two seasons at Bramall Lane, taking over as the boss the following June. 2019 – Midfielder Danny Guthrie joined Walsall from Indonesian side Persatuan Sepakbola Mitra Kukar on a free transfer, netting once in 28 outings in his first campaign with the Saddlers. 2014 – Forward Dani Pacheco joined Real Betis Balompié from AD Alcorcón, playing 25 times as they were promoted back to La Liga, moving on to Getafe in July 2016. On the same day, defender Gareth Roberts signed for Chester, playing 47 times before being released at the end of the season. 2000 - Steve Harkness left Sheffield Wednesday, joining Conference side Chester City on a free transfer, under the management of his former Anfield team-mate Mark Wright. He only made ten appearances before retiring from the game later that year. 1999 - David James left Aston Villa for West Ham United in a £3.5m deal, after just under two years at Villa Park. He played 102 times for the Hammers before moving on again to Manchester City in January 2004. Triple youth captures 2007 - Forward Michael Collins and keeper Martin Hansen both signed on as professionals. Meanwhile, striker David Amoo joined the reserves set-up from Millwall. Also, Angel Vales joined the club as reserve team coach and head of technical analysis. Welsh makes his debut 2000 - John Welsh made his debut for England Under-16’s as they beat Thailand 3-0 at York City’s Bootham Crescent in the opening fixture of a Nationwide-sponsored tournament that also featured Brazil. New deals 2009 – Nabil El Zhar signed a new contract until 2012. The French-born Moroccan international struck once in 32 reds games, moving on to Spanish side Levante U.D. in August 2011. 2002 - John Arne Riise signed an extension to his Liverpool contract to keep him at Anfield until 2007. He signed from AS Monaco for £4m in June 2001 and netted 31 times in his 348 first-team appearances, at either left-back or on the left side of midfield, but left for Roma for the same fee he was signed for in June 2008. He helped us to claim the Champions League, FA Cup, two UEFA Super Cups, League Cup and two FA Charity Shields. Bolo at last 1998 - Bolo Zenden grabbed his first international goal, while winning his last cap as a PSV Eindhoven player, and tenth in total. The Netherlands lost 2-1 to Croatia in the World Cup Finals Third-place play-off in Paris. Future reds on the move 1985 - John Scales joined Bristol Rovers from his first club Leeds United on a free transfer. He notched twice in 85 games for the Pirates, before moving on to Wimbledon in July 1987. 2004 - Roy Hodgson was appointed Manager of Viking F.K. Stavanger. He led them to ninth and fifth place finishes before taking charge of Finland in January 2006. 2011 - Lazar Marković signed a five-year deal as a professional for Partizan, going on to net fourteen times in 65 games, helping them to claim two League titles before joining SL Benfica for £20m three years later. On the same day, future reds scout Jonathan Woodgate joined Stoke City, playing 21 times without scoring in his one season with the Potters. 2015 – Dutch midfielder Gini Wijnaldum joined Newcastle United from PSV Eindhoven for a reported £14.5m. He netted eleven times in forty games for the Geordies as they were relegated, moving on to Anfield for an initial £23m in July 2016. Ex-red Antonio Barragán was on the winning side as Spain beat Brazil 4-2 after extra time at the same stage. 2011 – Mascherano played in a 3-0 victory over Costa Rica in a Copa América group game in Córdoba. 2016 – Midfielder Joe Allen was named in UEFA’s team of the tournament for Euro 2016 after Wales’s run to the Semi-final. 2004 - Future red Martin Škrtel played for Slovakia as they lost 2-0 to Serbia & Montenegro in the Kirin Challenge Cup in Japan. 1995 - Future red Brad Friedel played as the USA lost 1-0 to Bolivia in a Copa América group game in Uruguay. 1925 - Forward Jimmy Walsh featured in England’s 8-2 thrashing of Australia in an FA Tour game in Maitland. Happy days 2009 – Xabi Alonso married Nagore Aranburu in San Sebastián. 2013 – Ex-reserves midfielder Tom Ince, Paul’s son, became a father for the first time when his partner, Charly Cottrell, gave birth to Halle Rae at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport, where Ince himself had been born 21 years earlier.
