Digger’s Samba style
1984 - Future red John Barnes scored his first England goal, a stunning solo effort in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Brazil at the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro. Ex-red Dave Watson made his full England debut in the same game. Ex-reds Avi Cohen and Joey Jones faced each other in a goalless international friendly in Tel-Aviv on the same day, with future reds Assistant Manager Colin Pascoe winning his last cap as a Swansea City player.

Red champions
2005 - Carl Medjani skippered France Under-20’s as they thumped Portugal 4-1 in the Final of the Toulon Tournament at the Stade Mayol. Meanwhile, John Welsh came off the bench as England claimed third place by beating Mexico 3-2 on penalties after their match had ended 1-1, with future red James Milner winning his eighth and last cap at this level.
2012 - Medjani featured for the senior Algerian side in a 2-1 World Cup qualifying defeat in Mali.

2004 – Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both featured as France Under-21’s beat Sweden 1-0 in the Final of the Toulon Tournament.
2001 – Future red Nicolas Anelka played as France beat host nation Japan 1-0 to claim the Confederations Cup.

The King returns to Parkhead
1999 - The ‘dream team’ of Kenny Dalglish as Director of Football and John Barnes as Manager took charge at Celtic. It was only a further eight months before John Barnes’ departure, and Kenny himself was gone inside a year.

Deano cleared
1994 - Dean Saunders was cleared in the High Court of making a reckless challenge on Paul Elliott during a Liverpool game against Chelsea in September 1992. The tackle ended Elliott’s career, but Saunders was cleared of injuring him deliberately.

A legend departs
2015 - Steven Gerrard was released by the reds after a stellar career. The departures of right-back Glen Johnson, keeper Brad Jones and young midfielders Jordan Lussey and Marc Pelosi were also announced that day.
2021 - Gini Wijnaldum agreed to sign for Paris Saint-Germain for free on 1st July. He had moved to Anfield for an initial £23m in July 2016, notching 22 times in 237 games and helping us to claim the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup.

2016 – The departures of centre-half Dan Cleary, left-back José Enrique, full-back Ryan McLaughlin, centre-half Kolo Touré and forward Samed Yeşil were confirmed.
1895 – Outside-left Hugh McQueen left the reds to join Derby County. He had scored eighteen times in 61 games, going on to appear on the losing side twice in the FA Cup Final with the Rams.

Emlyn’s farewell
1979 - Emlyn Hughes won his final cap as a red, his 59th overall, captaining England as they were held to a goalless draw by Sweden in their friendly in Solna. Terry McDermott, Phil Thompson and ex-red Kevin Keegan all also featured.
1973 – Hughes had also played for his country in a 2-1 friendly defeat of the USSR in Moscow.

International bows
1993 - Future red Christian Ziege made his full international debut, playing alongside fellow future red Karl-Heinz Riedle and against future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel in Germany’s 3-3 U.S. Cup draw with Brazil in Washington DC. On the same day, Gérard Houllier took charge of France A as they lost 3-1 to Colombia.
2022 – Ibrahima Konaté won his first senior cap for France as they drew a UEFA Nations League group game 1-1 in Austria. Harvey Elliott, Takumi Minamino and future red Wataru Endō also played for their countries that day.

Other reds friendlies
1983 - We beat Thailand 3-0 in the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok with goals from Alan Kennedy, Sammy Lee and Graeme Souness. It was to be eighteen years before we returned to the country to play again.
1964 - Alf Arrowsmith bagged a brace as we beat a Vancouver All Stars side 2-0 at the Empire Stadium.

On the move
2010 - Rafael Benítez was appointed Manager of Internazionale. He led them to the Supercoppa Italiana and FIFA Club World Cup before being sacked in December 2010.
2011 – Centre-back Lloyd Jones joined the reds from Plymouth Argyle. He only made it to the first-team bench once, for our 3-1 win at Fulham in May 2013. He skippered the reserves for the 2014/15 season, moving on to Luton Town in January 2018. On the same day, future red Fabio Borini featured as Italy Under-21’s beat Mexico Under-20’s on penalties after drawing a friendly 1-1.
2013 - Lazar Marković signed for SL Benfica from Partizan after fourteen goals in 65 outings for the Serbian side. He bagged seven goals in 49 outings before joining the reds for £20m in July 2014.
2014 - Joe Cole signed for Aston Villa from West Ham United on a free transfer, netting once in sixteen games for the Villains before joining Coventry City in January 2016.

Liverpool Hotspur
1984 - A combined Liverpool-Tottenham Hotspur side took on a Swaziland Select XI, winning 1-0 thanks to a goal from Spurs’ Ian Culverhouse.

Internationals on target
2017 – Future red Naby Keïta struck his first goal for Guinea as a RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. player, as they won an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier 3-2 in the Ivory Coast. On the same day, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain netted his final goal while with Arsenal in England’s 2-2 World Cup qualifying draw with Scotland at Hampden Park as Andy Robertson won his last cap while with Hull City, with Emre Can, Adam Lallana and ex-red Raheem Sterling also in action. Toni Silva played for Guinea-Bissau for the final time while a Levadiakos player, as they beat Namibia 1-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier as Abel Xavier took charge of Mozambique.

1961 - Alan A’Court netted in England’s 6-1 defeat of New Zealand in an FA Tour game in Auckland.
1997 - Future red Milan Baroš scored for the Czech Republic Under-15’s as they beat Andorra 3-0 in a tournament game in Lisbon.

2003 – Fernando Torres bagged a brace as Spain Under-21’s won a European Championships qualifier 4-1 in Northern Ireland, with fellow future reds Paul Konchesky, Jermaine Pennant, Pepe Reina and Albert Riera also featuring at this level, with Ragnar Klavan playing for Estonia Under-21’s for the last time while with Viljandi JK Tulevik and Daniel Sjölund also playing in a qualifier.
2009 – Future red Milan Jovanović struck as Serbia won a World Cup qualifier 2-0 in the Faroe Islands, with Ajax’s Luis Suárez netting as Uruguay drew their qualifier 2-2 in Venezuela.

2012 - Sebastián Coates scored his first goal for Uruguay, playing alongside Luis Suárez in their 4-2 defeat of Peru in a World Cup qualifier in Montevideo. On the same day, Mohamed Salah scored while winning his last cap as an Al Mokawloon Al Arab Sporting Club player as Egypt won a World Cup qualifier 3-2 in Guinea.
2015 - Future red Roberto Firmino struck the only goal of Brazil’s friendly defeat of Honduras in Porto Alegre, with Philippe Coutinho and future red Fabinho also featuring. Future red Xherdan Shaqiri scored as Switzerland beat Liechtenstein 3-0 in a friendly in Thun, while Sheyi Ojo netted for England Under-18’s in a 2-1 friendly defeat in Russia, with future red Marko Grujić also in international action.
2018 – Ex-red Coutinho scored as Brazil won 3-0 in Austria, with Roberto Firmino and future red Alisson Becker also playing.

At the World Cup
2006 - Peter Crouch, Steven Gerrard, future reds Joe Cole and Stewart Downing and ex-red Michael Owen all played as England unconvincingly beat Paraguay 1-0 in their opening group game in Frankfurt. Meanwhile, future reds Javier Mascherano and Maxi Rodríguez face Arsenal’s Kolo Touré as Argentina beat the Ivory Coast 2-1 in Hamburg.
2002 - Portugal thumped Poland 4-0 in their World Cup group game. Jerzy Dudek had a poor game, but Abel Xavier did not feature due to injury. Meanwhile, ex-red Brad Friedel saved a penalty from Lee Eul-Yong as the USA drew 1-1 with South Korea in Daegu.
1998 - Stig Inge Bjørnebye and Øyvind Leonhardsen played in Norway’s 2-2 draw with Morocco in Montpellier, with future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel featuring as Brazil beat Scotland 2-1 in the Stade de France.

More final caps
1997 - Paul Ince won his last cap as an Internazionale player, and 33rd in total, as England lost 1-0 to Brazil in Le Tournoi in Paris, with future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel on the winning side.
2009 – Glen Johnson won his final cap while with Portsmouth, with Peter Crouch bagging his last England goal as a Pompey player in their 6-0 World Cup qualifying thumping of Andorra at Wembley. Meanwhile, Sami Hyypiä won his last cap as a reds player, and 99th to date, as Finland were beaten 3-0 by Russia in another qualifier in Helsinki, with future red Emre Can winning his only cap for Germany Under-15’s as they beat Poland 3-0 in a friendly. Ryan Babel, Andrea Dossena, Steven Gerrard, Péter Gulácsi, Dirk Kuyt, David N’Gog, Andriy Voronin, future reds Christian Benteke, John Heitinga, Raul Meireles and Maxi Rodríguez, and ex-reds Harry Kewell, Jari Litmanen and John Arne Riise all also featured for their countries that day.

Half a century for Nando
2008 - Fernando Torres won his fiftieth cap for Spain as they thumped Russia 4-1 in the opening game of their triumphant Euro 2008 Finals campaign in Innsbruck, with David Villa nabbing a treble and Xabi Alonso also in action. Meanwhile, future red Sotirios Kyrgiakos featured as Greece lost 2-0 to Sweden in Salzburg.

Babel in action
Future red Ryan Babel has twice represented the Netherlands on home turf on this day in history.
2005 - He was on target for the Under-20s as they beat Japan 2-1 in the World Championship Finals in Kerkrade.
2007 - He featured for the Under-21’s in a 1-0 defeat of Israel in the European Championships Finals in Heerenveen.

At the Euros
1996 – Future red Gary McAllister captained Scotland in their goalless draw with the Netherlands at Villa Park.
2012 – Future red Mario Balotelli and ex-reds Xabi Alonso, Álvaro Arbeloa, Robbie Keane and Fernando Torres all featured in the European Championships Finals in Poland.

Honoured at last
2009 - Gerry Byrne and Ian Callaghan finally received World Cup winners’ medals from the Prime Minister. They were not given them at the time, as non-playing members of the 1966 Final side.

Signing on
2020 – Left-back Owen Beck signed as a professional, going on to make two senior appearances in the League Cup in 2021/22.
2021 – Northern Irish keeper Liam Hughes signed a new contract. On the same day, left-back Adam Lewis joined Livingston on loan, while Harry Kewell was appointed Manager of Barnet. He was sacked after just three months in charge, having lost five and drawn two of his seven games.

Also in international action
2016 – Ex-red Javier Mascherano skippered Argentina as they thrashed Panama 5-0 in a Copa América Centenario group stage game in Chicago.
2019 – Ex-red Nikolay Mihaylov kept goal for Bulgaria as they lost a European Championships qualifier 3-2 to Kosovo in Sofia.
2023 – Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones both represented England Under-21’s in their 2-0 defeat by a Japan Under-22’s side at St. George’s Park. On the same day, Rigobert Song took charge of Cameroon as they drew a friendly 2-2 with Mexico in the USA.
