Sam’s bow 1900 - Forward Sam Raybould made his reds debut as a Hugh Morgan brace condemned West Bromwich Albion to a 2-0 defeat at Anfield. He went on to net 130 times in 226 reds games, becoming the first player to bag a hundred League goals for the club. Arrivals from Spain 2010 – Winger Maxi Rodríguez signed for free from Club Atlético de Madrid. He bagged seventeen goals in 73 reds outings before returning to Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina in July 2012. 2005 - Fernando Morientes signed from Real Madrid for £6.3m. He netted just twelve goals in 61 reds games, helpin

Divock at the treble 2015 – Forward Divock Origi bagged a hat-trick, his first reds goals, as we thumped Southampton 6-1 in a League Cup Fifth Round tie on the south coast. Future red Sadio Mané had given the home side a very early lead but a brace from Daniel Sturridge put us ahead. Jordon Ibe was also on target after the break as we headed towards Wembley. 2018 – Divock Origi pounced on a Jordan Pickford error to hand us victory in the Anfield derby in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time, having already hit the crossbar from close range late in the game. Beating the Geordies 2007 - Steven Gerrard, Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel were all on target as we won 3-0 at Newcastle United, with the visiting fans taunting troubled Toon boss Sam Allardyce, whose days were numbered at the club. Fernando Torres missed a host of golden chances, with boss Rafael Benítez further riling the club’s American owners by choosing to wear a track-suit, following on from his repeated statements in a pre-match press conference that “as always I am focused on training and coaching my team”. On the same day, future reds striker Milan Jovanović played for Serbia in a 1-0 Eur

Trebles away from home 1998 - Robbie Fowler scored a hat-trick after Paul Ince had headed the opener as we won 4-2 at Aston Villa, who were unbeaten in their first twelve games, their most successful ever start to a League campaign. This was Gérard Houllier’s first win in sole charge. Villa’s Stan Collymore was sent off in the second half for striking out at Michael Owen, while Dion Dublin had a penalty saved by David James to deny him his hat-trick, although he still netted two of his seven goals past us. Steve Harkness was playing his hundredth League game for the reds. 1936 - Centre-for

Happy birthday Gary 1965 - Gary Ablett was born in Liverpool. He signed on at Anfield as a professional on his eighteenth birthday, going on to make 147 reds appearances, scoring just once – in only his second game. He helped us to two League titles, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before being sold to Everton by Graeme Souness for £750,000 in January 1992, with whom he won a second FA Cup. He returned to the club in the summer of 2006 to take over as Reserve Team Manager, leading them to the national title in his second season, although he left at the end of the following campaign. Mickey’s treble 1997 - Michael Owen scored his first reds hat-trick as we beat Grimsby Town 3-0 at Anfield in a League Cup Fourth Round tie. Oggy signs on 1977 - Steve Ogrizovic signed from Chesterfield for £70,000. He only made five first-team starts in five years at Anfield as understudy to Ray Clemence, sitting on the bench on a further 27 occasions. He had more luck at Coventry City, winning the FA Cup with them in 1987 and making more than 500 League appearances. Ged takes charge 1998 - Gérard Houllier took sole charge of a reds game for the first time as we lost 3-1 at home to Leeds United. Robbie Fowler’s penalty was cancelled out by three late Leeds goals in front of the Kop, including one from Alan Smith on his debut, with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink bagging the first two of his seven strikes past us. Debutants galore 1970 - John Toshack made his reds bow as we were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Coventry City, with ex-red Geoff Strong being given a rapturous reception as he led his new side out. 1925 – Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jacks

An epic swindle 2010 – The sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures under the leadership of John W. Henry was completed, after a chaotic few days of court cases. On the same day, Jamie Carragher signed a contract extension tying him to the club until 2013, while future reds Emre Can and Samed Yeşil both played as Germany Under-17’s won a European Championships qualifier 5-0 in Estonia. Michael at the treble 1983 - Michael Robinson netted a hat-trick, his first League goals for the reds, as we won 3-1 at West Ham United, despite Craig Johnston being sent off just after the hour

Willkommen Jürgen 2015 - Jürgen Klopp was appointed reds boss following the sacking of Brendan Rodgers. He has so far led us to UEFA Champions League glory in Madrid, our first League title in thirty years, FIFA Club World cup and UEFA Super Cup as well as three other cup finals, generating a great rapport with the crowd. On the same day, the departures of Chris Davies, Glen Driscoll and Sean O’Driscoll from the backroom staff were all announced. All sitting comfortably 1994 - Neil Ruddock scored the first goal in front of the new all-seater Kop, as we beat Aston Villa 3-2, with Robbi

Sir Roger’s treble 1961 - Roger Hunt scored a hat-trick in our 6-1 defeat of Walsall at Anfield, already his second treble of the season as we went on to claim the Second Division title. Kevin Lewis, Jimmy Melia and Ian St. John netted the others, with Ron Yeats putting through his own net. Hurry up Harry 1893 - Forward Harry Bradshaw signed from Northwich Victoria. He struck 51 times in 138 reds games, helping us to the Second Division title on two occasions, and winning an England cap in his five years at Anfield, so becoming the first ever international red. Happy birthday Sami 1973 – Ex-reds centre-half Sami Hyypiä was born in Helsinki. The mighty Finn played 464 reds games, netting 35 times and helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two League Cups and two UEFA Super Cups following his £2.5m bargain capture from Dutch side Willem II in May 1999. He left the club in the summer of 2009 to sign for Bayer 04 Leverkusen on a free transfer, subsequently moving into management. Other reds celebrating 1998 – Trent Alexander-Arnold was born in Liverpool, signing pro terms on his seventeenth birthday. He has been at the Acad

Happy birthday Ronnie 1963 - Ronnie Rosenthal was born in Haifa. The Israeli forward made an instant impact on his arrival on loan in March 1990, with Kenny Dalglish saying, “Ronnie gave us the momentum. It was that which helped us to win the Championship.” He signed from Standard de Liège permanently that June for £1m and scored a total of 22 times in 97 reds games before joining Tottenham Hotspur for £250,000 after four years at Anfield. Lawler’s night 1978 - A testimonial match for full-back Chris Lawler was staged with the reds defeating Swansea City 3-2 at Anfield, thanks to a Ke

God off the mark 1993 - Robbie Fowler scored on his reds debut as we beat Fulham 3-1 at Craven Cottage in our League Cup Second Round first leg match. Ian Rush and Nigel Clough had put us two ahead at the break, with Sean Farrell pulling a goal back before God struck. Happy birthday Harry 1978 - Harry Kewell was born in Smithfield in Australia. He signed from Leeds United for £5m in July 2003, but his time at Anfield was somewhat disappointing due to a series of niggling injuries, as he bagged sixteen goals in 139 reds games before moving to Galatasaray as his contract expired in July

Birth of the legend 1913 - Bill Shankly was born in Glenbuck, Ayrshire. He was the ninth of ten children, and the youngest of five boys. Words cannot fully explain his importance to the history of Liverpool Football Club. However, his honours as reds boss between December 1959 and July 1974 included three League titles, two FA Cups, UEFA Cup and the Second Division championship. 1936 - Centre-half John Nicholson was born in Liverpool. He signed as a professional in January 1957, but only made one senior appearance before joining Port Vale in August 1961, playing over 200 games for them.

Crystal smashed 1989 - Eight outfield players scored, a League record, in our 9-0 humiliation of Crystal Palace at Anfield. John Aldridge came off the bench to score a penalty with his first kick, in his final reds game. Glenn Hysén struck the first of his seven reds goals in this game. For the record, our other scorers that day were John Barnes, Peter Beardsley, Gary Gillespie, Steve McMahon and Ian Rush, with Steve Nicol nabbing a brace. David Burrows, Alan Hansen, Ronnie Whelan and substitute Jan Mølby were the only outfield reds not on target. Geoff Thomas blew a golden chance to ne

A great start for the knight 1959 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt scored on his reds debut as we beat Sc***horpe United 2-0 at Anfield, with Jimmy Melia bagging the other. Roger went on to notch 285 times in 492 reds games, a club record until the arrival of Ian Rush. 1961 - We also beat The Iron 2-1 in another Second Division meeting at Anfield thanks to a Derek Hemstead own goal and an Alan A’Court strike. This was our sixth straight win from the start of the season as we went on to clinch the title. A red stalwart moves on 1994 - Ronnie Whelan left Anfield for Southend United on a free transf

Red trebles 2000 - Michael Owen scored a first half hat-trick past former team-mate David James as we defeated Aston Villa 3-1 at Anfield. He therefore became our first ever player to score two first-half hat-tricks in League games. Steve Stone bagged Villa’s late consolation. 1965 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt netted a treble in our 5-1 win at West Ham United, after Gordon Milne and Ian Callaghan had opened the scoring. Martin Peters scored for the Irons, one of his fourteen goals past us, with all the goals coming before the hour mark. 1986 - We also thumped the Hammers on their home turf when

The reds start out 1892 - We played our first ever competitive fixture, trouncing Higher Walton 8-0 in a Lancashire League fixture at Anfield, in front of a crowd of just 200. John Smith, Joe McQue and James Cameron all netted braces, with Malcolm McVean and John McBride also notching. West Derby-born Joe Pearson was the only non-Scot in this ‘Team of the Macs’. 1898 - We stepped out in red for the first time, as we beat The Wednesday 4-0 at Anfield, with centre-half Alex Raisbeck making his debut. We had played in blue and white quartered shirts until then. Left-half Bill Goldie bagged

Happy birthdays 1973 - Dietmar Hamann was born in Waldasson in Bavaria. He made a total of 283 appearances for the reds, scoring eleven times as he helped us to claim the Champions League, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, two League Cups and the FA Charity Shield after signing from Newcastle United for £8m in July 1999. He moved on to both Bolton Wanderers and Manchester City in a bizarre transfer saga in July 2006 to bring his Anfield career to a close. 1971 - Steve Harkness was born in Carlisle. He made his reds debut on his twentieth birthday, in our 1-0 League win over Qu

Jan the man 1984 - Midfield maestro Jan Mølby signed from Ajax for £225,000. He struck 61 times in 292 reds appearances, including a remarkable forty of his 42 attempted spot-kicks. He won three League titles and two FA Cups during his time at Anfield before joining Swansea City as Player/Manager on a free transfer in February 1996. Match of the Day 1964 - Our 3-2 win over Arsenal at Anfield was the first game ever to be screened on the BBC’s new “Match Of The Day” show. Phil Chisnall was the first player to kick a ball on MOTD, knocking the kick-off to Gordon Wallace, who grabbed a b

The Doc is in 1976 – Ex-Blues forward David Johnson signed from Ipswich Town for a club record £200,000. He went on to win three League titles, European Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields, scoring 78 times in 213 reds games. He was the first player to score for both sides in Merseyside derbies, and returned to Goodison in August 1982 for £100,000. Most recently 2018 – Three reds made their debuts as we thumped West Ham United 4-0 in our season opener at Anfield – keeper Alisson Becker, Naby Keïta and Xherdan Shaqiri. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring, with Sadio Mané baggin

Triple debutants 2007 - Ryan Babel, Fernando Torres and Andriy Voronin all made their first-class reds bows as a late Steven Gerrard free-kick secured a 2-1 win at Aston Villa in our opening League fixture. This ensured that we became the fourth team to pass a thousand points in the Premier League, reaching 1,002, and was the first ever live Premiership match shown on Setanta Sports. We had taken the lead through a Martin Laursen own goal before Jamie Carragher gave away a penalty that Gareth Barry converted, one of his four goals past us.
