    Shanks departs 1974 - Bill Shankly resigned as Manager after fifteen years in charge, leaving reds fans bemused and shocked. He had led us to three League titles, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups and the Second Division championship. His final significant act as boss was to sign Arsenal forward Ray Kennedy for a club record fee of £180,000, announced the very same day. Razor went on to net 72 times in 393 reds games, helping us to claim six League titles, three European Cups, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields before joining John Toshack’s Swansea City in January 198

    Wembley glory 1983 - We won our third consecutive League Cup, 2-1. Norman Whiteside opened the scoring for Manchester United with the first of his four goals past us before Alan Kennedy equalised at Wembley. The game went into extra time, with our fitness proving the greater as Frank Stapleton had to come back into defence with Gordon McQueen going up front, due to cramp. Ronnie Whelan, who had scored twice in the previous season’s Final, won the game for us with a beautifully curled shot past the helpless Gary Bailey. Bob Paisley was sent up to lift the trophy in his final season as boss.

    Digger’s Samba style 1984 - Future red John Barnes scored his first England goal, a stunning solo effort in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Brazil at the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro. Ex-red Dave Watson made his full England debut in the same game. Ex-reds Avi Cohen and Joey Jones faced each other in a goalless international friendly in Tel-Aviv on the same day, with future reds Assistant Manager Colin Pascoe winning his last cap as a Swansea City player.
