Carra’s 500 2008 - Jamie Carragher was applauded onto the pitch by a guard of honour before making his 500th appearance for the club, skippering the side to a 5-0 thumping of Luton Town in our FA Cup Third Round replay at Anfield. Steven Gerrard scored a hat-trick, including a swerving 30-yard strike to complete his treble, after Ryan Babel had opened the scoring on the stroke of half time. Sami Hyypiä also netted, with ex-red Don Hutchison among the visitors’ ranks. In comes Redders 1991 - Jamie Redknapp signed from Bournemouth for £350,000, going on to strike 41 times in 308 first-t

Champions of the world 2019 – Roberto Firmino struck the only goal of the FIFA Club World Cup Final in Qatar as we beat Flamengo 1-0 after extra time. We had had an injury-time penalty award overruled by VAR. Macca’s farewell and hello 1991 - Steve McMahon played his 277th and final reds game as we drew 2-2 at home with Manchester City, whom he was shortly to join, as was widely known at the time. Dean Saunders and Steve Nicol scored our goals, with David White netting two of his five goals past us, having already also bagged a brace in the reverse fixture earlier that season. Lu

Records in the League Cup 1994 - Ian Rush scored his sixteenth and final reds hat-trick in his 600th reds game as we won 3-1 at Blackburn Rovers in a Fourth Round tie. Chris Sutton’s late consolation was one of his seven strikes against the reds. On the same day, future red Sami Hyypiä played for Finland in their 2-0 friendly defeat in Spain. 1988 - John Durnin made his third and final reds appearance, as a substitute, as we lost 4-1 at West Ham United at the same stage of the competition, our worst ever League Cup defeat. Future red Paul Ince opened the scoring with a spectacular volle

Trebles away from home 1998 - Robbie Fowler scored a hat-trick after Paul Ince had headed the opener as we won 4-2 at Aston Villa, who were unbeaten in their first twelve games, their most successful ever start to a League campaign. This was Gérard Houllier’s first win in sole charge. Villa’s Stan Collymore was sent off in the second half for striking out at Michael Owen, while Dion Dublin had a penalty saved by David James to deny him his hat-trick, although he still netted two of his seven goals past us. Steve Harkness was playing his hundredth League game for the reds. 1936 - Centre-for

Taylor out 1959 - Phil Taylor resigned as Manager, paving the way for the arrival of Bill Shankly the following month. He had made 345 appearances as right-half before and after the war, netting 34 times and winning one League title, and captaining the side. He joined the coaching staff when he retired from playing in 1954, and became Manager two years later, staying in the job for three years. However, he has the unhappy distinction of being the only reds boss never to manage the side in the top flight. He said, “The strain of it all has made me very tired at times and I decided, great as i

Have a rowdy birthday 1937 - Ron Yeats was born in Aberdeen. The giant centre-half played 454 times for the reds, netting sixteen times and captaining us to two League titles, our first FA Cup, the Second Division title and FA Charity Shield. He was one of Bill Shankly’s first and most inspired signings, arriving for just £30,000 from Dundee United in July 1961. He moved on to Tranmere Rovers in December 1971. Technicolor reds 1969 - Our 2-0 home win over West Ham United was the first game screened in colour by the BBC’s Match Of The Day. Chris Lawler and Bobby Graham scored the goals

Ged takes charge 1998 - Gérard Houllier took sole charge of a reds game for the first time as we lost 3-1 at home to Leeds United. Robbie Fowler’s penalty was cancelled out by three late Leeds goals in front of the Kop, including one from Alan Smith on his debut, with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink bagging the first two of his seven strikes past us. Debutants galore 1970 - John Toshack made his reds bow as we were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Coventry City, with ex-red Geoff Strong being given a rapturous reception as he led his new side out. 1925 – Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jacks

Ged in charge 1998 - Gérard Houllier took over as sole Manager, with Roy Evans leaving after four years in the hot-seat. Uncle Roy’s only trophy in charge had been the Coca Cola Cup in 1995, although he led us to four consecutive top four finishes in the League. Happy birthdays 1971 - Former striker Stan Collymore was born in Stone. He netted 35 times in 81 reds games after signing from Nottingham Forest for a British record £8.5m fee in July 1995. He signed from Valencia for £5.6m in July 2005 and helped us to claim the FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield, playing 87 times and scoring just once. An epic swindle 2010 – The sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures under the leadership of John W. Henry was completed, after a chaotic few days of court cases. On the same day, Jamie Carragher signed a contract extension tying him to the club until 2013, while future reds Emre Can and Samed Yeşil both played as Germany Under-17’s won a European Championships qualifier 5-0 in Estonia. Michael at the treble 1983 - Michael Robinson netted a hat-trick, his first League goals for the reds, as we won 3-1 at West Ham United, despite Craig Johnston being sent off just after the hour

Le Boss taken ill 2001 - Gérard Houllier was admitted to Broadgreen Hospital with chest pains during our Anfield fixture with Leeds United. Thankfully he went on to make a full recovery. Future red Harry Kewell scored for the Yorkshire outfit, before Danny Murphy equalised, handing us our 600th Premiership point. The reds therefore became the third team, after Manchester United and Arsenal, to reach this milestone. First ever Merseyside derby 1894 - We played Everton for the first time in a senior game, unfortunately going down 3-0 at Goodison Park in our ninth ever game in the top fl

A legend gets off the mark 1981 - Ian Rush scored his first two reds League goals to help us to a 3-0 home win over Leeds United, along with a Trevor Cherry own goal. 1925 - We also faced Leeds, with Fred Baron netting in a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Full-back James Garner played his fifth and final reds game. Russell Wainscott struck one of his five goals against the reds in this match. Happy birthday 1991 - Xherdan Shaqiri was born in Gjilan, then part of SFR Yugoslavia, and now in Kosovo. Willkommen Jürgen 2015 - Jürgen Klopp was appointed reds boss following the sacking of Brendan Rodgers. He has so far led us to UEFA Champions League glory in Madrid, our first League title in thirty years, FIFA Club World cup and UEFA Super Cup as well as three other cup finals, generating a great rapport with the crowd. On the same day, the departures of Chris Davies, Glen Driscoll and Sean O’Driscoll from the backroom staff were all announced. Goalscoring debutants 1946 - Forward Cyril Done scored on his official reds debut as we were held 1-1 by Charlton Athletic at home. He had also scored in the previous first-class reds game in which he had played - seven years before, just before the outbreak of war when the season was cancelled. Future reds boss Don Welsh netted for the visitors, having previously done so against us before the Second World War! 1907 - Harold Fitzpatrick scored on his reds debut to hand us a 1-0 home victory over Sunderland in another top-flight encounter as outside-right Arthur Goddard played his 200th red

Happy birthday Ronnie 1963 - Ronnie Rosenthal was born in Haifa. The Israeli forward made an instant impact on his arrival on loan in March 1990, with Kenny Dalglish saying, “Ronnie gave us the momentum. It was that which helped us to win the Championship.” He signed from Standard de Liège permanently that June for £1m and scored a total of 22 times in 97 reds games before joining Tottenham Hotspur for £250,000 after four years at Anfield. Lawler’s night 1978 - A testimonial match for full-back Chris Lawler was staged with the reds defeating Swansea City 3-2 at Anfield, thanks to a Ke

Birth of the legend 1913 - Bill Shankly was born in Glenbuck, Ayrshire. He was the ninth of ten children, and the youngest of five boys. Words cannot fully explain his importance to the history of Liverpool Football Club. However, his honours as reds boss between December 1959 and July 1974 included three League titles, two FA Cups, UEFA Cup and the Second Division championship. 1936 - Centre-half John Nicholson was born in Liverpool. He signed as a professional in January 1957, but only made one senior appearance before joining Port Vale in August 1961, playing over 200 games for them.

Crystal smashed 1989 - Eight outfield players scored, a League record, in our 9-0 humiliation of Crystal Palace at Anfield. John Aldridge came off the bench to score a penalty with his first kick, in his final reds game. Glenn Hysén struck the first of his seven reds goals in this game. For the record, our other scorers that day were John Barnes, Peter Beardsley, Gary Gillespie, Steve McMahon and Ian Rush, with Steve Nicol nabbing a brace. David Burrows, Alan Hansen, Ronnie Whelan and substitute Jan Mølby were the only outfield reds not on target. Geoff Thomas blew a golden chance to ne

This was our sixth straight win from the start of the season as we went on to clinch the title. A red stalwart moves on 1994 - Ronnie Whelan left Anfield for Southend United on a free transf

He arrived on a free transfer from Bayern München in June 2000 and was a vital member of the treble-winning team bagging six goals in 73 games, until he was struck down by Guillain-Barré syndrome, moving to VfB Stuttgart on a free transfer in July 2004 after a loan spell at Blackburn Rovers. 1998 – Irish centre-half Conor Masterson was born in Celbridge, signing on from Lucan United for £900,000 on his sixteenth birthday. He was released in the summer of 2019 having failed to break through and is now with Queens Park Rangers. 19

Red trebles 2000 - Michael Owen scored a first half hat-trick past former team-mate David James as we defeated Aston Villa 3-1 at Anfield. He therefore became our first ever player to score two first-half hat-tricks in League games. Steve Stone bagged Villa’s late consolation. 1965 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt netted a treble in our 5-1 win at West Ham United, after Gordon Milne and Ian Callaghan had opened the scoring. Martin Peters scored for the Irons, one of his fourteen goals past us, with all the goals coming before the hour mark. 1986 - We also thumped the Hammers on their home turf when

Off the mark 1959 - Winger Johnny Morrissey nabbed his first reds goal as we suffered a 2-1 Second Division defeat at Sheffield United when we conceded two penalties inside three minutes, both converted by Graham Shaw. 1928 - We also faced the Blades, losing our top-flight meeting at Anfield 2-1, with Dick Edmed nabbing our consolation. Scottish-born South African international left-back Jimmy Gray played his only reds game. Fred Tunstall bagged one of his eight goals past us, with Thomas Boyle also on target. The reds start out 1892 - We played our first ever competitive fixture, trouncing Higher Walton 8-0 in a Lancashire League fixture at Anfield, in front of a crowd of just 200. John Smith, Joe McQue and James Cameron all netted braces, with Malcolm McVean and John McBride also notching. West Derby-born Joe Pearson was the only non-Scot in this ‘Team of the Macs’. 1898 - We stepped out in red for the first time, as we beat The Wednesday 4-0 at Anfield, with centre-half Alex Raisbeck making his debut. We had played in blue and white quartered shirts until then. Left-half Bill Goldie bagged
