Terry Mac signs on 1974 – Terry McDermott signed from Newcastle United for £175,000. He struck 81 times in 329 reds games, helping us to three European Cups, four League titles, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields. In 1980 he became the first player to win both the PFA and Football Writers’ Player Of The Year Awards in the same season. He returned to St. James’ Park in September 1982. Red trebles 2004 - Milan Baroš grabbed his only reds treble, including two penalties, as we beat Crystal Palace 3-2 at Anfield. This remains our only hat-trick against the Eagles to date. 1982 - Ian Rush scored a hat-trick as we beat Coventry City 4-0 in a League match at Anfield. Kenny Dalglish netted the other goal, while Bruce Grobbelaar conceded a penalty but saved the resultant spot-kick taken by Mark Hateley. On the same day, future red Glenn Hysén played as Sweden won a European Championships qualifier 1-0 in Cyprus. Goals galore 1996 - We beat Charlton Athletic 4-1 in a League Cup Third Round replay, with goals from Mark Wright, Jamie Redknapp and a Robbie Fowler brace. 1965 - Northampton Town headed home on the wrong end of a 5-0 scoreline. Ian St. John, Roger Hunt, Ian Callaghan and Peter Thompson were all on the scoresheet that day, with Willie Stevenson netting from the spot. The Cobblers were relegated to the Second Division at the end of that season. Beating Citeh 1937 - We won 3-1 at Maine Road thanks to goals from Phil Taylor, John Shafto and Willie Fagan, with right-back Tommy Cooper playing his hundredth reds game. 1948 - We beat Manchester City 4-2 in another First Division meeting at the same ground, with Phil Taylor again on target. Cyril Done bagged a brace, with Jimmy Payne opening the scoring. 1929 – We lost a Lancashire Senior Cup Third Round tie by the odd goal in nine at Anfield. Dick Edmed and Jimmy Smith bagged a brace apiece. Derby despair 1971 - We lost at Goodison Park with future red David Johnson grabbing the only goal of the game in his first Merseyside derby, the first of his four goals past us. Our cause was not helped when Larry Lloyd limped off with a serious knee injury in the first half that kept him out for two months. Referee Clive Thomas awarded an amazing 55 free-kicks in a niggly game. This was Bill Shankly’s 500th League game in charge. Dan the man 2006 - Daniel Agger was named Danish Young Player of the Year. He had turned out just sixteen times for the reds by this stage, having arrived from Brøndby IF for £5.8m that January. Seven for Cyril 1943 - Cyril Done scored an amazing seven goals as we trounced Chester 9-0 in a Wartime League fixture at Anfield. Stan Palk and Andy Beattie struck the others. In and out 1936 – Centre-half Norman Low left the reds for Newport County. He only played thirteen times since arriving at Anfield in October 1933, deputising for Tom Bradshaw. 1965 - Doug Livermore signed pro terms after starting out with Bolton Wanderers, making just eighteen appearances in our midfield before joining Norwich City in November 1970, but he returned to Anfield as Roy Evans’ Assistant in 1994. He left in November 1998 following Gérard Houllier taking full control. Lucas off 2010 - Lucas Leiva was sent off in stoppage time of our 2-0 League defeat at Stoke City. Ricardo Fuller put the home side ahead after the break with Kenwyne Jones doubling their lead in the final minute, the first of his three goals past us. Final walk in the park 1920 - We faced Bradford Park Avenue for the sixth and final time when Dick Forshaw struck a brace in a 3-1 win, with Harry Chambers grabbing our first goal. David McLean netted the last of his eight goals against the reds. Willie born 1871 – Scottish inside-forward Willie Walker was born in Uphall. He joined the reds from Leith Athletic in May 1897, netting three times in twelve reds games before he returned to his former club for free in August 1898. A wee miss 1909 - Winger Bert Middlemiss struck the only goal as we lost our first ever meeting with Tottenham Hotspur, with ‘Wee’ Ronald Orr missing a penalty for the reds at White Hart Lane. Recent internationals on target 2021 – Neco Williams bagged his final Wales goal as a reds player in their 5-1 thumping of Belarus in a World Cup qualifier in Cardiff, with ex-reds Joe Allen, Danny Ward and Harry Wilson all also featuring. Ex-red Christian Benteke struck as Belgium beat Estonia 3-1 in another qualifier in Brussels, with Divock Origi also in action. Terence Miles scored as England Under-18’s won a shoot-out after their meeting with Belgium in Spain ended goalless. Luke Chambers, Virgil van Dijk and ex-red Gini Wijnaldum also played for their countries that day, with Ryan Gravenberch appearing for the Netherlands for the tenth and final time as an Ajax player. 2020 – Roberto Firmino scored the only goal of Brazil’s World Cup qualifier against Venezuela in São Paulo, while Takumi Minamino converted a penalty as Japan beat Panama 1-0 in a friendly in Austria, his first goal as a reds player. Curtis Jones struck for England Under-21’s for the first time in their 3-1 European Championships defeat of Andorra at Molineux, with Rhian Brewster playing for the first time since joining Sheffield United and Rhys Williams winning his second and last cap at this level. Ex-red Luis Suárez scored in his fourth consecutive game, converting a penalty as Uruguay won a World Cup qualifier 3-0 in Colombia, with Darwin Núñez nabbing his only goal as a SL Benfica player and future red Luis Díaz on the losing side. Morgan Boyes, Rhys Williams and future red Wataru Endō were also in international action that day. 2016 – Mohamed Salah scored from the spot, his last goal for Egypt as a Roma player, as they beat Ghana 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Alexandria. Ragnar Klavan captained his country but put through his own net as Estonia were thumped 8-1 by Belgium in a qualifier in Brussels. Gini Wijnaldum, future reds Naby Keïta and Virgil van Dijk, and ex-reds Péter Gulácsi and Krisztián Németh also played in qualifiers that day. Young future reds on target for their countries 1994 - Crewe Alexandra’s Danny Murphy netted a brace as England Under-18’s beat Slovenia 3-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Wycombe. Future red Rigobert Song also played for his country that day. 1999 - Milan Baroš made his first appearance for the Czech Republic Under-21’s, coming on as a substitute in their 3-0 defeat of Greece in a European Championships qualifier in Teplice, and scoring. On the same day, Robbie Keane struck as the Republic of Ireland were held to a 1-1 draw by Turkey in the first leg of their Euro 2000 play-off. 2014 – Danny Ings bagged a brace as England Under-21’s beat Portugal 3-1 in a friendly at Turf Moor, with ex-red Tom Ince also in action. Future red Kostas Tsimikas was also in international action that day. 2017 - Tsimikas played again for his country, this time as Greece Under-21’s drew 1-1 with Croatia in a European Championships qualifier in Thessaloniki. 2015 – Future red Sadio Mané scored as Senegal drew a World Cup qualifier 2-2 in Madagascar, while Harry Wilson struck for Wales Under-21’s as they beat Armenia 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Bangor. Joe Allen, Emre Can, Adam Lallana, Simon Mignolet, Martin Škrtel, future reds Thiago Alcântara, Alisson Becker, Marko Grujić, Virgil van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum, and ex-reds Javier Mascherano, Jonjo Shelvey and Raheem Sterling all featured in internationals that day, with Roy Hodgson taking charge of England and future red Xherdan Shaqiri winning his fiftieth senior cap for Switzerland. 2019 – Mané played for Senegal again, as they beat DR Congo 2-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Dakar. Young international debutants 1968 - Alun Evans won his first cap for England Under-23’s as they drew 2-2 with the Netherlands in a friendly at St. Andrews. 1963 - Future red David Wilson debuted at the same level as England drew 1-1 with Wales at Ashton Gate. 1990 - Future red David James won his first cap for England Under-21’s as they beat the Republic of Ireland 3-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Cork. 2009 – Future reds Christian Benteke and Fabio Borini both made their Under-21’s debuts, with Krisztián Németh scoring his first goal at this level as Hungary beat Italy in a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in Székesfehérvár. Péter Gulácsi and András Simon both also featured, with David N’Gog and future reds Simon Mignolet and Gini Wijnaldum also featuring at this level that day, and Chris Mavinga playing for France Under-19’s. 2012 – Jack Robinson debuted for England Under-21’s in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Northern Ireland in Blackpool, with Jordan Henderson skippering a side that also included Andre Wisdom, future red Nathaniel Clyne and ex-red Tom Ince. Meanwhile, Suso came off the bench to win his first cap for Spain at the same level in their 3-1 win in Italy. 2014 – Future red Marko Grujić debuted for Serbia Under-20’s as they lost 1-0 to Romania Under-21’s in Stara Pazova. Reds booked 1999 - Jamie Redknapp and ex-reds Paul Ince and Don Hutchison were all booked as Kevin Keegan’s England beat Scotland 2-0 at Hampden Park in a Euro 2000 play-off. Young reds striker Michael Owen also played, with Ince making his first appearance as a Middlesbrough player. Future red Yossi Benayoun was the victim of a 5-0 thumping in Tel-Aviv as Denmark won the first leg of their play-off. Meanwhile, fellow future red Fernando Morientes featured as Spain held Brazil to a goalless draw in a friendly in Vigo, with Frode Kippe and AS Monaco’s John Arne Riise played for Norway Under-21’s as they lost a European Championships qualifier 3-1 to Spain. More international starts 1991 - Future red Torben Piechnik made his international debut in Denmark’s 2-1 Euro ’92 qualifying defeat of Northern Ireland in Odense. Ex-red Jim Magilton also played. On the same day, Steve Staunton won his 28th cap for the Republic of Ireland, and first in his first spell at Villa Park, as they won 3-1 in another qualifier in Turkey. Ex-reds John Aldridge and Kevin Sheedy both also featured. Ian Rush and future red Gary McAllister both also played in qualifiers on the same day. Beating the Irish 1981 - We beat an Irish Internationals XI in a friendly at Tolka Park in Dublin, with Craig Johnston grabbing the only goal of the game as Steve Nicol played his first reds game. Igor on his way 2000 - Igor Bišcan was granted a work permit by the Department of Employment, and so was free to join the reds from Dinamo Zagreb when the Croatian season broke for winter at the beginning of December. He moved on to Panathinaikos in July 2005, after three goals in 118 reds games, and helping us to claim two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield, as well as playing a crucial role on the road to Istanbul. Heading to Brazil 2013 – Luis Suárez featured as Uruguay thumped Jordan 5-0 in the first leg of their World Cup play-off in Amman. 2014 – Suárez again represented his country, scoring during the game as well as converting in a penalty-shoot that Costa Rica won 7-6 after their friendly had finished 3-3 in Montevideo. Heading off 1998 - Reserves keeper Tony Warner joined Celtic on loan. He made three first-team appearances for the Bhoys, keeping just one clean sheet. 2018 – Ex-reds midfielder Joe Cole announced his retirement from playing, with Harry Kewell being sacked as Manager of Notts County on the same day. Other reds games 1954 – We lost a Second Division fixture 3-2 at Luton Town. Bob Morton struck the first two of his four goals against the reds to give the Hatters a two-goal half-time lead, but Billy Liddell scored from the spot before John Evans equalised. However, Jimmy Adam grabbed the winner for the home side. 1926 – We went down 2-1 at Sunderland with Dick Forshaw putting us in front. Also in international action 1935 – Ex-red Elisha Scott played for Northern Ireland as they lost 2-1 to Scotland in the British International Championships in Edinburgh. 1938 – Ex-red Matt O’Mahoney played for the Republic of Ireland in their 3-2 friendly win over Poland in Dublin. 1946 – Cyril Sidlow played for Wales as they lost 3-0 to England in the British International Championships in Manchester. 1957 – Tommy Younger featured as Scotland drew 1-1 with Wales in the same competition at Hampden Park. 1984 – Future reds Steve McMahon and Barry Venison both played for England at junior levels. 1985 - Jim Beglin, Mark Lawrenson and ex-reds Michael Robinson and Kevin Sheedy all lined up against Jan Mølby in a World Cup qualifier at Lansdowne Road. Denmark won 4-1 in what was Eoin Hand’s last game as Republic of Ireland Manager. Meanwhile, future red Mark Wright played as England were held to a goalless draw at Wembley by Northern Ireland in another qualifier. 1997 – Leicester City’s Emile Heskey played as England Under-21’s lost the first leg of their European Championships Play-off 2-0 to Greece in Crete. 2001 – Chris Kirkland, Stephen Wright and future red Jermaine Pennant all featured as England Under-21’s beat the Netherlands 1-0 in another play-off. Future red Pepe Reina also played at this level that day. 2005 – Jerzy Dudek, future red Raul Meireles and ex-red Arnaud Bühler were all international action. Gary’s return 2021 - Gary McAllister was re-appointed Assistant Manager of Aston Villa, two days after Steven Gerrard’s appointment to the top job. He stayed there for eleven months, until Gerrard was dismissed.

He has so far led us to UEFA Champions League glory in Madrid, our first League title in thirty years, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield, generating a great rapport with the crowd. On the same day, the departures of Chris Davies, Glen Driscoll, Gary McAllister and Sean O’Driscoll from the backroom staff were all announced. All sitting comfortably 1994 - Neil Ruddock scored the first goal in front of the new all-seater Kop, as we beat Aston Villa 3-2, with Robbie Fowler bagging a brace. Guy Whittingham and ex-red Steve Staunton struck for the visitors as Jamie Redknapp reached a century of reds outings. Other centenaries 1968 - Tommy Smith and Alan Ball, with one of his eleven goals against the reds, were on the scoresheet in the hundredth League derby as we drew 1-1 at Anfield. 1898 – Full-back Archie Goldie played his hundredth reds game as we lost 2-1 at Stoke, with Jack Cox on target. Carra’s record 1999 - Jamie Carragher equalled the record number of England Under-21’s caps, held by Gary Owen, as he won his 22nd cap, captaining them for the first time in their 4-1 friendly defeat of Denmark at Valley Parade. Substitute David Thompson scored, with fellow red Steven Gerrard also in the team. Carra went on to claim 27 in total, which was still an England record until he was overtaken by Scott Carson, and more recently by James Milner who eventually made 46 appearances. 1996 - David Thompson won his first cap at Under-21’s level as a substitute in England’s goalless draw with Poland at Molineux. Future red Emile Heskey was in the starting eleven. Bowing out 1955 - Billy Liddell won his 29th and final cap as Scotland beat Northern Ireland 2-1 at Windsor Park in Belfast. Future reds keeper Tommy Younger won his fifth cap in the same game. 2013 - Craig Bellamy announced his retirement from international football after nineteen strikes in 78 games for Wales. Off the mark 1921 - Harry Beadles struck the first of his six reds goals as we drew 1-1 at Preston North End in a top-flight encounter. Right-half Francis Checkland played his fifth and final reds game that day, with Preston’s late equaliser coming from the spot from future red Archie Rawlings. 1949 – Full-back Ray Lambert bagged the first of his two reds goals, scoring from the spot in our 2-0 defeat of Middlesbrough at Anfield, with Jimmy Payne also netting. Jimmy’s treble 1930 – Jimmy Smith scored a hat-trick as we thumped Everton 5-0 in a Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round tie at Anfield, with Gordon Hodgson and Tom Bradshaw also scoring. International debuts 2009 – Future red Dejan Lovren came off the bench to make his debut in Croatia’s 3-2 friendly defeat of Qatar in Rijeka. 1997 - Bjørn Tore Kvarme won his only senior international cap as Norway were held to a goalless friendly draw in Oslo by Colombia. Clubmate Stig Inge Bjørnebye also played, with future red Milan Baroš in action for the Czech Republic Under-16’s on the same day. 1995 - Brad Friedel won his first cap as a Galatasaray player as the USA beat Saudi Arabia by the odd goal in seven in a friendly in Washington DC. Future reds Markus Babbel and Christian Ziege both played in Germany’s 6-1 thumping of Moldova in a Euro ’96 qualifier in Leverkusen on the same day. Off to Filbert Street again and again 1927 - We drew 1-1 at Leicester City with Gordon Hodgson on target and Ernie Hine bagging one of his ten strikes past us. 1932 - Hodgson struck again as we won 2-1, with Syd Roberts scoring his first reds goal, while Danny Liddle netted the first of his four goals against the reds. 1938 - Harman van den Berg netted an 89th minute equaliser, his first reds goal, as we drew 2-2 with Berry Nieuwenhuys also on target. Twice against the Robins We have twice played at Ashton Gate on this day in history, winning on neither occasion. 1955 - Bristol City won our Second Division encounter 2-1 with Tony Rowley bagging our consolation as John Atyeo bagged the first two of his five goals past us for the home side. 1974 - We were held to a goalless draw in a Third Round League Cup tie. He had made just eight appearances in his time at Anfield. 2020 – Brazilian keeper Marcelo Pitaluga signed from Fluminense for an initial £1m, but has yet to make the first-team bench. 2021 – Midfielder Kaide Gordon signed as a professional. He had arrived from Derby County eight months earlier for an initial fee reported to be £1m, making his senior bow in our League Cup Third Round tie at Norwich City seven months later. He struck once in four outings across 2021/22. Management ends 2001 - Joey Jones stepped down as Caretaker Manager of Wrexham. He had been in charge for just two games, both of which were lost, and was replaced by Denis Smith. 1997 - Jan Mølby was sacked as Manager of Swansea City, his first management role, despite only losing sixteen of his eighty games in charge, and only just missing out on promotion in his one full season at the Vetch Field. Charlie Adam and future red Mohamed Salah were also in international action that day. 2015 – Sheyi Ojo, Jordan Rossiter and future red Dominic Solanke all played as England Under-19’s won a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in Macedonia. Mamadou Sakho and ex-reds Javier Mascherano and Krisztián Németh also featured for their countries on the same day. 2021 – Ex-red Danny Ward scored an own goal as Wales drew 2-2 with the Czech Republic in a World Cup qualifier in Prague, with both Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah captaining their countries to victories in World Cup action. Owen Beck, Morgan Boyes, Neco Williams, future reds Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch, and ex-reds Joe Allen, Ki-Jana Hoever and Harry Wilson all also featured in internationals. Joe honoured 2012 – Reds midfielder Joe Allen was named Player of the Year and Club Player of the Year for 2011/12 at the FAW Awards, based on his time with Swansea City and the national side. Jimmy’s death 1908 – Forward Jimmy Stott died in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He signed from Middlesbrough in August 1893, netting fourteen times in seventeen games as we won the Second Division title in our first League season, moving on to Grimsby Town in July 1894. Peter Cormack put us in front before ex-red Ted MacDougall equalised. Steve Heighway restored our lead, but Pop Robson levelled with one of his five strikes past us. 1966 – Fulham held us to a 2-2 draw in L4. Geoff Strong scored inside the first minute, but Allan Clarke bagged the first two of his seven goals against us, with Ian St. John completing the scoring before the break. 1960 – We won a Second Division encounter 2-1 at Lincoln City as Roger Hunt nabbed a brace. 1904 – We beat Barnsley 2-0 in a Second Division fixture at Oakwell. Bobby Robinson had a penalty saved but converted the rebound, with John Carlin also on target. In opposition 1938 – Ex-reds reserves centre-half Matt O’Mahoney won his only cap for Northern Ireland as they lost 2-0 to Scotland in the British International Championships at Windsor Park. Andy Beattie, who guested for the reds during the war and later spent some time on our backroom staff, and Bill Shankly were both on the winning side. O’Mahoney also won six caps for the south of Ireland.

Our first European triumph 1973 - We lost 2-0 at Borussia Mönchengladbach with Jupp Heynckes getting both goals inside ten first-half minutes. However, that was enough to secure the UEFA Cup for the first time, as we had won the first leg 3-0 at Anfield two weeks before. We therefore became the first English side to claim the League title and a European trophy in the same season. Athens despair 2007 - We lost 2-1 to AC Milan in the Champions League Final in Athens thanks to a Pippo Inzaghi brace, with Bolo Zenden playing his 47th and final reds game. Dirk Kuyt headed our late consolation, his first goal in Europe for us. Keeping on track for a title showdown 1989 - Ray Houghton netted a brace, with John Aldridge, Ian Rush and John Barnes also on target as we beat West Ham United 5-1 at Anfield, our 24th consecutive game without defeat, just three days after our emotional FA Cup Final win, to keep us on course for our second double in four years. The FA Cup was on display on a table on the pitch before the game. However, the League was to be cruelly snatched from our grasp by Arsenal in the very last kick of the season. 1985 - Our only other first-class game on this day saw John Wark miss a penalty as we lost at Everton. Paul Wilkinson bagged the only goal of the game. Uncle Joe announced 1983 – The appointment of Joe Fagan as Bob Paisley’s replacement as Manager was announced, although he did not take over until 1st July. In his first season as boss, he led the club to a unique treble of League, European Cup and League Cup, retiring just a year later. He remains the only Scouser to date to hold the position on a permanent basis. 2022 – It was revealed that Fábio Carvalho would sign from Fulham for an initial £5m on 1st July. Births and death 1997 - Centre-half Joe Gomez was born in Catford, south-east London. He signed from Charlton Athletic for £3.5m in June 2015, making 223 senior appearances up to his 27th birthday, without scoring as he helped us to claim the League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and League Cup. On the same day, Spanish midfielder Pedro Chirivella was born in Valencia. He signed from his hometown club in July 2013, playing eleven first-team games before moving on to Nantes in July 2020, captaining the side in our League Cup thumping at Aston Villa in December 2019. 1996 - Keeper Ryan Fulton was born in Burnley. He signed pro terms in the summer of 2013, making his first senior appearance in our friendly at Swindon Town in August 2015, moving on to Hamilton Academical in July 2017. 1955 – Outside-right Fred Staniforth died. He signed from Grimsby Town in May 1913, but only made three senior appearances before the war intervened. Gini’s farewell 2021 – Midfielder Gini Wijnaldum played his 237th and last reds game as we beat Crystal Palace 2-0 at Anfield in front of just 10,000 fans due to COVID restrictions. Sadio Mané scored in his eighth consecutive League game against the Eagles, nabbing both our goals. We finished the season in third place, while ex-reds boss Roy Hodgson took charge of Palace for the final time. An obscure international 1987 - Young reds midfielder Ken de Mange made his senior international debut as a substitute for the Republic of Ireland alongside clubmates John Aldridge and Ronnie Whelan, as they beat Brazil 1-0 in a Rous Cup game at Lansdowne Road. He never made a first team appearance in his two seasons with the reds, before moving on to Leeds United. On the same day, Peter Beardsley and Mark Wright both played as England were held to a goalless draw by Scotland in the same competition at Hampden Park. It was Beardsley’s last cap as a Newcastle United player, and Wright’s final one while with Southampton. A treble for Albert 1948 - Albert Stubbins bagged a hat-trick as we beat a Philadelphia Select side 5-2 in a friendly on our post-season tour. Jack Balmer and Billy Liddell also netted. Rush for his country for the last time 1994 - Ian Rush grabbed his final goal for Wales as they won 2-1 in a friendly in Estonia. He netted 28 goals in his 73 internationals, a Welsh record. 1980 - He also represented his country in their 1-0 British International Championships defeat by Northern Ireland in Cardiff, alongside ex-red Joey Jones. Nigel’s debut 1989 - Future red Nigel Clough won his first full international cap as England were held to a goalless draw by Chile in a Rous Cup game at Wembley. 2001 – Future reds keeper Brad Jones won his only cap at Under-20’s level as Australia thumped Guam 6-0 in the East Asian Games in Japan. Larry for England 1972 - Larry Lloyd won his third and final England cap as a red, and his last for his country for eight years. Emlyn Hughes also played as Northern Ireland won 1-0 at Wembley in the British International Championships. Barmby’s brace 1996 - Future red Nick Barmby bagged a brace as England beat China 3-0 in a friendly in Beijing. Ex-red Peter Beardsley won his 59th and final cap in this game, while Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Jamie Redknapp all also featured. A French triumph 1956 - We thumped French outfit Racing Club Franc-Comtois 8-1 in Besançon. Billy Liddell bagged a brace, with Alan A’Court, Louis Bimpson, John Evans, Brian Jackson and Jimmy Melia all adding to an own goal. The kids done well 1963 – Tommy Smith captained the reds to a 3-1 victory in the first leg of our first ever FA Youth Cup Final at Anfield. Unfortunately, we crashed 5-2 in controversial circumstances in the return match two days later. Drawing at sea 1935 – We drew 2-2 with Victoria on Gran Canaria, with Vic Wright and Fred Howe netting. The reds were introduced to Miss Spain before the match! On the way out 2005 - It was announced that Paul Harrison, Patrice Luzi, Jon Otsemobor, Richie Partridge and Mark Smyth would all be leaving the club. They had only managed eleven first-team outings between them. 1997 - Roy Hodgson resigned as Manager of Internazionale, with two games remaining of the Serie A campaign and the club sitting in third place. This came two days after their UEFA Cup Final defeat to Schalke 04 on penalties, when he was pelted with coins and cigarette lighters by fans at the San Siro. 2011 – Ex-reds defender David Raven was released by Shrewsbury Town after 28 games for the Shrews. 2012 – Emile Heskey was released by Aston Villa after fifteen strikes in 111 outings. On the same day, keeper Chris Kirkland signed for Sheffield Wednesday. 2014 – Forward Michael Ngoo was released by the reds, having not made the breakthrough. On the same day, John Arne Riise was let go by Fulham after failing to score in exactly a century of games for the Cottagers. 1928 – Future reds outside-right Danny McRorie joined Morton after just three months with Alloa Athletic. He struck 51 times in 76 League games before moving to Anfield for £1,500 in November 1930. In charge 2006 - Nigel Spackman was appointed Manager of Millwall. He only remained in the post for four months before being sacked. 2009 – John Barnes led Jamaica to a 2-2 draw with Haiti in a friendly in Fort Lauderdale. Future red Thiago Alcântara scored for Spain Under-19’s on the same day as they won a friendly 3-0 in Estonia. 2010 – John Toshack took charge of Wales as they lost a friendly 2-0 in Croatia, with future red Dejan Lovren on the winning side. Future red Fabio Borini featured for Italy Under-19’s on the same day, as they beat Northern Ireland 3-2 in a friendly in Udine. Penalty shoot-out despair 1996 - Future red Jari Litmanen scored for Ajax in the UEFA Champions League Final as their match with Juventus ended 1-1 in the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. The Dutch outfit lost the penalty shoot-out 4-2, with Jari again on target from the spot. 2001 - Fellow future red Mauricio Pellegrino saw his decisive penalty saved by Oliver Kahn to hand Bayern München the UEFA Champions League as Valencia lost their shoot-out 5-4 in Milan, after the match had ended 1-1. David N’Gog played his 94th and last reds game. On the same day, ex-reds keeper Jerzy Dudek announced his retirement from playing. He had made 186 reds appearances, helping us to glory in Istanbul, as well as the Worthington Cup in 2003. He left to join Real Madrid in July 2007, although barely featured for their first team. 1925 - Northern Irish inside-forward Billy McDevitt was sold to Exeter City for a club record fee, having been converted to a centre-half since arriving at Anfield from Swansea Town in 1923. He has played just four reds games. 1908 – Scottish inside-left Bill McPherson left Anfield to join Rangers. He had signed from St. Mirren in August 1906, bagging seventeen goals in 55 outings including one on his debut against Woolwich Arsenal. 1903 – Scottish right-back Don McCallum left the reds to sign for Morton after just two senior outings since arriving from Queen’s Park in June 1901. For the King 1967 - We took part in a testimonial match for Tranmere Rovers legend John King, winning 3-1 at Prenton Park thanks to strikes from Gerry Byrne, Ian St. John and an own goal. Happy birthdays 1930 - Left-half Geoff Twentyman was born in Brampton. He netted nineteen times in 184 reds games after signing for £10,000 from his hometown club Carlisle United in December 1953. He returned to Anfield as Chief Scout in 1967, a post he held for nineteen years, helping to bring players such as Ray Clemence, Alan Hansen, Steve Heighway, Phil Neal and Ian Rush to the club. He died aged 74 in February 2004. 1969 - Steve Staunton was born in Drogheda. He arrived from Dundalk for £20,000 in September 1986, netting seven times in 148 reds appearances across his two spells at Anfield, helping us to our last League title in 1990, and the FA Cup a year earlier. 1913 – Irish reserves centre-half Matt O’Mahoney was born in Mullinavat, County Kilkenny. He was on our books in 1933 but failed to break through to the first team. He later turned out for Bristol Rovers and Ipswich Town, as well as representing his country. 1993 – Reserves forward Krisztián Adorján was born in Budapest. He arrived from MTK Hungária in the summer of 2009, moving on to Italian side Novara Calcio in September 2014 after failing to make the first team. Daniel once more 2013 – Daniel Sturridge scored his third consecutive reds game as we thumped Norwich City 5-0 at Anfield, becoming the first red to do so in his first three games since Ray Kennedy in September 1974. Jordan Henderson, Luis Suárez and Steven Gerrard also netted, with Ryan Bennett putting through his own net. Milly off 2019 – James Milner was dismissed late on as we came from behind to beat Crystal Palace 4-3 at Anfield as Andros Townsend handed the Eagles a half-time lead. God’s despair 1994 - Robbie Fowler broke his ankle as we drew 1-1 in our rearranged FA Cup Third Round tie at Bristol City, and we lost the Anfield replay six days later. Ian Rush netted our goal at Ashton Gate. Jack’s treble 1907 - Jack Parkinson scored a hat-trick at Sunderland, with Sam Raybould and Jack Cox also on the scoresheet for the reds. Sunderland came back from 4-1 down at half-time to draw the game 5-5 as Arthur Hurdman nabbed a brace, with George Bridgett scoring one of his five goals past us. The reds felt hard done by as the referee, a last-minute replacement when the original official was caught up in fog on the way to the match, awarded the home side two penalties, both converted by Ernie Rhodes, one of which was a controversial award. Derby disappointment 2009 – Steven Gerrard skippered the club for the 250th time as we were held to a 1-1 League draw at Anfield by Everton, netting a 25-yard strike before Tim Cahill headed in a late equaliser from a free-kick, one of his five goals against the reds. We had previously been denied a clear penalty for a Phil Jagielka foul on Fernando Torres in the box. 1901 – The Blues left Anfield with a 2-1 victory, with Jack Cox netting our goal. Despite this we went on to claim our first League title. Jack Taylor netted two of his five goals against the reds. New contract for Sami 2002 - Sami Hyypiä signed a new contract to tie him to the reds until 2005. He signed two further extensions and made 464 reds appearances in total, netting 35 times and helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two League Cups and two UEFA Super Cups following his £2.5m bargain capture from Dutch side Willem II in May 1999. He left the club in the summer of 2009 to sign for Bayer 04 Leverkusen on a free transfer. Thumping the Canaries 1985 - Goals from John Wark, Kenny Dalglish and an Ian Rush brace sent Norwich City to a 4-0 defeat at Anfield. City went on to be relegated that season. Neil on the move 2006 - Neil Mellor joined Wigan Athletic on loan after six goals in 22 reds games. He struck in the last minutes of his debut to hand the Latics a 3-2 victory at Middlesbrough, failing to score again as he played another four times. On the same day, ex-red David Thompson also moved to the JJB Stadium on a short-term contract from Blackburn Rovers, also netting on his debut in the same game. He turned out just nine more times for the Latics, joining Portsmouth in July 2006. Meanwhile, Jon Otsemobor joined Crewe Alexandra on a free transfer from Rotherham United on the same day. He made exactly half a century of senior appearances for the Alex before joining Norwich City in June 2007. Beginning and ends 1924 - Forward Hector Lawson made his reds debut as we beat Manchester City on our first trip to their new Maine Road ground, with Harry Chambers bagging the only goal of the game. 1929 – We went down 2-0 at Leicester City, with Ernie Hine netting two of his ten goals past us as centre-forward Tommy Reid played his 55th and final reds outing. 1957 – Scottish centre-forward Peter Kyle died. He joined the reds from Clyde in May 1899, failing to score in five first-team games before moving on to Leicester Fosse a year later. 1982 – David Johnson netted his 78th and last reds goal as we won 3-1 at Barnsley in a Milk Cup Fifth Round replay. Graeme Souness and Kenny Dalglish were also on target. Another red Jones 1989 - Defender and apprentice decorator Barry Jones signed from his hometown club Prescot Cables for a £500 donation. He only ever made one senior appearance for the reds, in our 1-0 UEFA Cup defeat against Kuusysi Lahti in Finland in October 1991. Beating the Mancs 2020 – We beat Manchester United 2-0 at Anfield to extend our lead at the top of the table to sixteen points, with a game in hand. Virgil van Dijk headed in after a quarter of an hour, with Mohamed Salah finally making the victory secure with a breakaway stoppage-time strike. Cue, “and now you’re gonna believe us, we’re gonna win the League” from the Kop. 1918 - We trounced United 5-1 in a Wartime League match at Anfield. Arthur Metcalf and Thomas Bennett both bagged braces, with Donald McKinlay also on the scoresheet. Disappointment against the Potters We have twice visited Stoke City on this day in history, without securing a victory. 1957 - We lost a Second Division encounter 1-0 as they completed their second and most recent League double over us, with Harry Oscroft bagging his sixth and last goal against us. 1974 - Tommy Smith was on target in the last minute as we drew our top-flight match. Kevin Keegan had had a goal disallowed when the ball struck the arm of the grounded Alec Lindsay on the way into the net. Geoff Hurst scored for the Potters, the last of his nine strikes past us. Peake’s last cap 1914 - Ernest Peake won his tenth and final cap for Wales as they lost 2-1 to Ireland in Wrexham in the British International Championships. Clubmate Billy Lacey played for the victors. Internationals in action 2007 - Future red Lucas Leiva got on the scoresheet as he skippered Brazil Under-20’s as they held Argentina to a 2-2 draw in the Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventud de América” tournament in Paraguay. Fellow future red Emiliano Insúa was a substitute for Argentina. 2009 - Insúa captained his country in the same competition as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Venezuela in Maturín. 2013 – Oussama Assaidi played for Morocco as they were held to a goalless draw by Angola in an Africa Cup of Nations Finals group game in South Africa. 2015 – Ex-red Carl Medjani featured as Algeria beat South Africa 3-1 in a group game in Equatorial Guinea. 2016 – Future red Ozan Kabak played for Turkey Under-16’s in their 2-1 friendly defeat of Norway. 2017 - Sadio Mané scored as Senegal beat Zimbabwe 2-0 in an African Cup of Nations group game in Gabon. 1988 – Ex-red Avi Cohen and future red Ronnie Rosenthal both played as Israel lost 3-2 to Belgium in a friendly in Tel-Aviv. 1997 – Future red Brad Friedel featured in the USA’s 2-0 defeat by Mexico in the US Cup in Pasadena. 2000 – Future red Fábio Aurélio played for Brazil as they drew an Olympics qualifier 1-1 with Chile. Store re-launch 2007 - The city centre club store in Williamson Square was re-launched by John Aldridge. On the same day, Steven Gerrard was named in uefa.com’s Team of the Year for 2006, a feat he repeated a year later. Stalemate at Anfield 1955 – Bury faced Stoke City at Anfield in an FA Cup Third Round Third Replay that ended 2-2. The game was staged at 2pm on a Wednesday, just two days after the previous replay at Goodison Park. The Potters eventually won a fifth meeting 3-2, with all of the encounters going to extra time, and the final winner coming in the 120th minute! Also on the move 1926 – Future reds outside-right Danny McRorie signed for Airdrieonians. He struck five times in eight League games before moving on to Stenhousemuir in July 1927. 1951 – Outside-right Billy Watkinson was sold to Accrington Stanley for £3,000. He had signed from Prescot Cables in February 1946, netting twice in 42 appearances. 1996 - Nigel Clough left Anfield for Manchester City for £1.5m, only two and a half years after he had joined from Nottingham Forest for £2.275m. He had netted nine times in 44 reds games. 2009 - Craig Bellamy joined Manchester City from West Ham United for a reported £14m after nine strikes in 26 outings for the Hammers. 2016 – Ex-reds midfielder Jermaine Pennant signed for Tampines Rovers in Singapore, netting five times in 34 games. 2017 – Pennant signed for Bury, playing seven times before moving on again at the end of the campaign. 2020 – Swedish winger Kristoffer Peterson re-joined Utrecht on loan from Tranmere Rovers, striking twice in eight games in this second spell. 2021 – Ex-reds centre-half Conor Masterson joined Swindon Town on loan from Queens Park Rangers, turning out five times for the Robins. On the same day, forward Max Woltman signed pro terms with the reds. He made his senior bow in our UEFA Champions League group game defeat of AC Milan at the San Siro in December 2021. 2023 – Forward David Amoo joined Crewe Alexandra from Stevenage on a free transfer, failing to score in seven outings before being released at the end of the season. Other reds games 2002 – Southampton held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield with Michael Owen putting us in front before Kevin Davies grabbed one of his four goals past us. 1991 – John Barnes netted as Wimbledon left L4 with a 1-1 draw, with Warren Barton converting a late free kick as Jimmy Carter got a rare start for the reds due to injuries. 1980 – Paul Dyson headed in the only goal of our visit to Coventry City early on, as a nineteen-game unbeaten run in all competitions came to an end. 1952 – We lost 3-0 to Sunderland at Roker Park as Len Shackleton bagged two of his five goals past us before Dickie Davis scored the last of his seven. 1935 – We won 2-1 at Portsmouth, despite falling behind early on to one of Fred Worrall’s four strike against the reds. Gordon Hodgson and Vic Wright scored after the break. Tosh El Boss 2004 - John Toshack was appointed Manager of Real Murcia. They were bottom of the table in the Spanish League and he could not prevent them returning to the Second Division after just one season in the top-flight.
