A roasting for the Turks 2007 - We secured the record ever victory in the Champions League by any club when we trounced Beşiktaş JK 8-0 at Anfield, with the lead only 2-0 at half time. Yossi Benayoun bagged a hat-trick, with his first strike being our 500th in Europe. Peter Crouch and Ryan Babel netted twice each with Steven Gerrard also on target. Sami Hyypiä played his hundredth club European game, while Babel became our hundredth different scorer in continental competition. This was Rafael Benítez’s fiftieth Champions League game in charge of the reds. It was announced on the same day that the construction of the club’s new home would begin in the spring after the city council approved revised plans for a 60,000-seater stadium. These plans were later shelved. Rush scored one, Rush scored two 1982 - Ian Rush scored four goals in our 5-0 thumping of Everton at Goodison Park, our record win there. The Blues had debutant Glenn Keeley sent off early on for a professional foul on Kenny Dalglish, while Mark Lawrenson was also on target, his only strike in eighteen derby matches. In comes Dave 1959 - Centre-forward Dave Hickson controversially signed for the reds from Everton for £12,000, as he was the Blues’ current darling. His arrival added an extra 15,000 to the usual gate as we beat Second Division pace-setters Aston Villa 2-1 at Anfield on his debut the following day, with one supporter running onto the pitch to kiss him on the cheek! He went on to score 38 times in 67 reds games. Mo again 2022 – Mohamed Salah scored in his fourth consecutive game as we won 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur, bagging a first-half brace before Harry Kane struck one of his nine goals past us. Gini off the mark 2016 – Midfielder Gini Wijnaldum bagged his first reds strike, the final goal as we trounced Watford 6-1 at Anfield to end the day on top of the League table. Sadio Mané nabbed a brace, with Philippe Coutinho, Emre Can and Roberto Firmino also on target. He scored one goal 2003 - Djimi Traoré scored his only ever reds goal in a Romanian mud-bath as we drew 1-1 with Steaua Bucureşti in a UEFA Cup Second Round match. 2018 – We lost a UEFA Champions League group game 2-0 at Crvena Zvezda, also known as Red Star Belgrade, with Milan Pavkov bagging a brace inside the opening half hour. The reds hit the woodwork twice after the break but failed to make the break-through. European firsts 1973 - Crvena Zvezda beat us 2-1, our first ever home defeat in the European Cup, with Kevin Keegan having an effort chalked off despite the ball appearing to have crossed the line. Chris Lawler was on target in both legs, with his goal at Anfield being his 61st and last reds strike as we went out at the Second Round stage 4-2 on aggregate. 1991 - We beat Auxerre 3-0 in the UEFA Cup, the only time the reds have overcome a two-goal first leg deficit in European competition in normal play, to reach the Third Round. Jan Mølby set things rolling with a penalty before Mike Marsh bagged his first reds goal to level the tie with a stunning header, with Mark Walters scoring a memorable winner in front of the Kop seven minutes from time. The visitors had Frederic Darras sent off with fourteen minutes remaining. 1979 - We also travelled to France, losing a friendly 3-1 at Lille OSC, with Terry McDermott scoring our goal from the spot. Scully at Anfield 1983 - The title sequence of ‘Scully’ was filmed at Anfield, with actor Andrew Schofield running out onto the pitch with the reds, in place of Kenny Dalglish. Ian Rush, Michael Robinson and Steve Nicol’s diving header handed us a 3-0 derby win to send us back to the top of the table. Births and death 1870 - Forward Jimmy Stott was born in Darlington. He signed from Middlesbrough in August 1893, netting fourteen times in seventeen games as we won the Second Division title in our first League season, moving on to Grimsby Town in July 1894. 1909 – England international inside-forward Frank Becton died of tuberculosis. He joined the reds from Preston North End for £100 in March 1895, our first confirmed three-figure fee, and struck 42 times in 86 reds games before joining Sheffield United in October 1898. 1920 – Former Chairman Sir John Smith was born. He held the post between 1973 and 1990, overseeing the most glorious period of our history, having joined the board as a Director in 1971. Semi’s bow 2002 - Jon Otsemobor made his senior reds bow in our 3-1 Worthington Cup Third Round victory over Southampton at Anfield, thanks to Patrik Berger’s 35th and final reds goal and strikes from El-Hadji Diouf and Milan Baroš. Steven Gerrard captained Liverpool for the first time. On the same day, Steve McManaman became the first Englishman to skipper Real Madrid, leading them to a 4-0 Copa del Rey defeat of Oviedo. 1920 - James Penman played his one and only senior reds game, as a replacement for Donald McKinlay at left-back, as we lost 1-0 at home to Bradford Park Avenue. David McLean bagged one of his eight goals against the reds. Red centurions 1965 - Ian Callaghan played his 200th reds game as we won 2-0 at Sheffield Wednesday, thanks to goals from Roger Hunt and Peter Thompson inside the final fifteen minutes. 1897 – Matt McQueen reached a century of reds appearances as Nottingham Forest won 2-1 at Anfield with Dan Cunliffe on target. Beating the double winners 1971 – Ian Ross scored his fourth and final reds goal with Emlyn Hughes and Ian Callaghan also on target in a 3-2 win over double winners Arsenal at Anfield. Tommy Smith put through his own net, with future red Ray Kennedy also scoring. A goalscoring international debut 1957 - Reds left-winger Alan A’Court scored his only England goal on his debut in their 3-2 defeat by Northern Ireland at Wembley. The game counted for both the British International Championships and as a World Cup Qualifier. Keeper Tommy Younger played for Scotland on the same day. 2011 - Krisztián Adorján made his debut for Hungary Under-19’s as they beat the Faroe Islands 3-1 in a friendly in Portugal. First goals 1937 - Forward John Shafto bagged the first of his three senior reds goals as we lost 4-3 at home to Brentford, their only ever Anfield victory in nine attempts. Alf Hanson and Willie Fagan struck our other goals, while Bobby Reid bagged a treble for the visitors, the last of his five strikes against the reds, with Dave McCulloch grabbing one of his seven goals past us. 1954 - Left-half Geoff Twentyman grabbed his first reds goal in our 2-1 Second Division victory over Hull City, with Eric Anderson also on target in our first ever meeting with the Tigers. Jordan’s day 1995 – Midfielder Jordan Williams was born in Bangor. He left the reds after just one senior appearance to sign for Rochdale in June 2018 after a loan spell. Scots in and out 1935 - Scottish international right-half Tom Morrison was sold to Sunderland after four goals in 254 reds games. He helped them to claim the League title in his first season on Wearside. 1897 - Forward Robert Colvin signed from Oldham County. He only ever made three senior appearances, without finding the net, and then joined Glossop North End the following year. Management moves 2002 - Steve Nicol was appointed permanent head coach of New England Revolution, a role he held for almost nine years. 2010 - Christian Ziege was sacked as Manager of DSC Arminia Bielefeld, having been in charge for just six months. 2020 - Nigel Clough was named as Manager of Mansfield Town, leading them to sixteenth in League Two at the end of his first campaign. An unlucky break 1999 - Derby County’s Stefano Eranio suffered a broken leg after a tackle from Sami Hyypiä as we won 2-0 at Anfield with goals from Danny Murphy and Jamie Redknapp. Also on the move 1987 - Future reds loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe joined Third Division Bristol City on loan from Walsall. He only made three appearances for the Robins. 2014 – Jermaine Pennant signed for Indian Super League side Pune City, playing seven times. Meanwhile, left-back Andrea Dossena joined Leyton Orient. He was released at the end of the season after netting once in fifteen outings as they were relegated to League Two. 2019 – Argentinian centre-half Gabriel Paletta signed for S.S.D. Monza 1912, netting twice in fifty outings as he helped them to get promoted from Serie C in his first season, and then consolidate in Serie B. Other reds games 2004 – Darren Anderton struck the only goal of Birmingham City’s visit. 1993 – Nigel Clough netted as we beat West Ham United 2-0 at Anfield, with Alvin Martin putting through his own net. 1976 – David Fairclough was on target as we won 1-0 at Sunderland. 1948 – We beat Portsmouth 3-1 in L4. Billy Liddell, Jack Balmer and Cyril Done were all on the scoresheet, with Peter Harris scoring the first of his eight goals against the reds. 1926 – Huddersfield Town won 3-2 at Anfield as Dick Forshaw bagged a brace. Future red Willie Devlin scored, before Billy Smith netted one of his four past us and George Brown struck one of his nine. 1909 – We were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Bury. Arthur Goddard and Jack Parkinson scored with Tom Chorlton having a twice-taken penalty saved both times. Tom Kay struck one of his four goals past us, with Angus McIntosh also scoring. Jayden’s farewell 2021 – Jayden Danns won his third and last cap for England Under-16’s as they won a friendly 3-2 in France. Happy birthdays 1934 - Left-winger Alan A’Court was born in Rainhill. He signed for free from Prescot Cables in September 1952 and scored 63 times in 381 reds games, helping us to the Second Division title in 1962, as well as representing England at the 1958 World Cup in his time at Anfield. He left to join Tranmere Rovers in October 1964. 1949 - Forward Alun Evans was born in Bewdley, near Kidderminster. He was Britain’s first £100,000 teenager when he signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers in September 1968, our new record signing. He scored 33 goals in 111 reds games, including appearing in the 1971 FA Cup Final, before being sold to Aston Villa for £70,000 in June 1972. 1911 - Forward Harold Barton was born in Leigh in Lancashire. He signed for free from Whitegate Juniors in November 1928, and famously bagged a treble in our 7-4 derby win at Anfield in February 1933, netting a total of 29 goals in 109 reds games before joining Sheffield United in June 1934. 1994 – Young full-back Ryan McLaughlin was born in Belfast. He played his first game for the first team against Roma in Boston in July 2012, but moved on to Oldham Athletic in August 2016 having been released without making a senior appearance. 1998 – South African winger Bob Priday died. His chances were limited to forty reds games after he made the switch from Cape Town City in December 1945, as he was behind Billy Liddell in the pecking order. He notched seven times while at Anfield, before moving on to Blackburn Rovers in March 1949. Another trophy in the cabinet 1986 - We beat Everton 4-1 at Goodison Park to claim the Screen Sport Super Cup, thanks to a 7-2 aggregate scoreline. Ian Rush bagged a treble, with Steve Nicol also netting that night and Graeme Sharp striking a late consolation, one of his seven derby goals. Mark Lawrenson was making his 300th reds appearance. Rushie off the mark 1981 - Substitute Ian Rush scored his first reds goal as we beat Finnish champions Oulun Palloseura 7-0 in a European Cup First Round fixture, to progress 8-0 on aggregate. A minute’s silence was held before the game, in remembrance of Bill Shankly’s death the day before. Kenny Dalglish opened the scoring with a diving header, our hundredth European Cup goal. Terry McDermott bagged a brace with Ray Kennedy, David Johnson and sub Mark Lawrenson all also on target, the latter with his first reds strike. Anfield trebles 1975 - John Toshack bagged a treble of headers as we beat Hibernian 3-1 in the second leg of our UEFA Cup First Round tie, to progress 3-2 on aggregate. Winger Alex Edwards netted Hibs’ consolation. 1978 - Jimmy Case netted all the goals in our 3-0 League defeat of Bolton Wanderers, although the game was somewhat spoiled by a smoke bomb that was thrown from the Anny Road end into the Bolton goal area. Kenny Dalglish was stand-in captain in the absence of Emlyn Hughes. 1950 - We hosted the Trotters in another top-flight match, with Jack Balmer netting twice and Jimmy Payne also on target as we drew 3-3. Nat Lofthouse struck one of his eight goals against the reds, with Willie Moir scoring one of his five past us and Harry Webster also on the scoresheet. Nous sommes les champions du monde 2001 - Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both netted for the French Under-17’s in their 3-0 defeat of Nigeria in the Final of the World Championships in Trinidad. 2016 – Future red Dominik Szoboszlai scored from the spot while captaining Hungary Under-17’s as they beat Denmark 3-1 in a European Championships qualifier. On the same day, ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s as they beat Greece 3-0 in a friendly in Croatia, with Rhian Brewster featuring. Perfect start ends 1893 - We dropped our first point in the Football League as we were held 1-1 by Notts County at Trent Bridge, after winning our first four games. Hugh McQueen was on target for the reds. Red centurions 1972 – Left-back Alec Lindsay played his hundredth reds game as we won 2-1 at Leeds United. Mick Jones but the home side in front with one of his seven strikes past us, before Larry Lloyd and Phil Boersma secured the points. 1967 – We beat Stoke City 2-1 at Anfield with Peter Dobing opening the scoring with one of his eight goals against the reds. Peter Thompson netted, with Tommy Smith scoring the winner from the spot as Ron Yeats played his 300th reds game. Off to a winning start 1911 - Left-back Bob Pursell made his reds bow in our 2-1 win at Sunderland. John McDonald scored his fourth and last goal for the club, with Bobby Robinson also on target as Jackie Mordue grabbed one of his six goals against the reds. Other European fixtures 2010 – We held Utrecht to a dour goalless draw in our UEFA Europa League encounter in the Netherlands. 1997 - We drew 0-0 at home with Celtic, although this was still enough to take us through to the Second Round of the UEFA Cup on the away goals rule. 1969 - We won 4-0 at Dundalk, thanks to a Peter Thompson brace and goals from Bobby Graham and Ian Callaghan, to go through to the Second Round of the Fairs Cup, as we blooded youngsters including Phil Boersma, Ray Clemence and Larry Lloyd. Cally’s goal was our first European strike from a substitute, after he had replaced Peter Thompson at half time. Mixed derby fortunes 1933 - We beat the Blues 3-2 at Anfield, with Berry Nieuwenhuys scoring his first reds goal. Alf Hanson, Sam English scored, with future red Tommy Johnson nabbing the last of his eight goals against us, with Tommy White netting the last of his four goals past us. 1905 - We lost 4-2 at Goodison in another top-flight encounter, with Joe Hewitt netting both our goals. Jimmy Settle struck one of his eleven goals against us, with Walter Abbott, Harold Hardman and Jack Sharp all also on target as left-back David Murray played his fifteenth and last reds game. For Rab 1904 - A testimonial match for right-half Rab Howell was staged at Anfield. John Carlin netted both goals as we drew 2-2 with Preston North End. He was the only true Romany to play for England and played 67 reds games without scoring between April 1898 and June 1901, but was forced to retire after breaking his leg while a Preston player. 1901 – We beat the Lillywhites 2-1 in a Lancashire Senior Cup game at Anfield, thanks to goals from Andy McGuigan and Sam Raybould. 1929 – We won 2-0 in a Second Round tie in the same competition at Anfield, with Gordon Hodgson bagging a brace. Representing the League 1912 - Winger Arthur Goddard and full-back Ephraim Longworth both played for the Football League in their 2-1 defeat of a Southern League team at Old Trafford. Twice each against the Lancastrian rivals We have twice faced both Blackburn Rovers and Burnley on this day in history, winning just once. 1899 - We lost 2-0 at Ewood Park in a First Division meeting with Rovers 1922 – We lost by the same score at Turf Moor, with forward Dick Forshaw playing his hundredth League game for the club. 1939 - Phil Taylor struck twice with Jack Balmer, Willie Fagan and Berry Nieuwenhuys also netting as we triumphed 5-0 in a friendly at Blackburn. 1916 - The other game was a goalless Wartime League match against the Clarets at Anfield. Beaten at the Reebok 2006 - We lost 2-0 at Bolton Wanderers, with the home side opening the scoring from a free-kick incorrectly awarded against Pepe Reina for handball. The reds also hit the post through Xabi Alonso, with Gary Speed and Iván Campo on target for the home side. First cap 2012 - Future red Marko Grujić won his only Under-17's cap as Serbia trounced Belarus 7-0 in a friendly in Borisov. Signing on 2008 – Finnish reserves forward Lauri Dalla Valle signed professional terms. He made just one senior appearance before moving to Fulham in August 2010 as part of the deal that brought left-back Paul Konchesky to Anfield. 1971 - Keeper Frank Lane signed from Tranmere Rovers for £15,000, but only made two first-team appearances, deputising for Ray Clemence. Unfortunately, he distinguished himself for all the wrong reasons on his debut in September 1972 by safely catching a deep cross from Derby County’s Alan Hinton and then stepping backwards over his own goal-line, to help us on our way to a 2-1 defeat. Loaned out 2011 - Jonjo Shelvey joined Blackpool on a temporary basis, netting six times in ten outings before being recalled two months later. 2004 - Reserves defender Jon Otsemobor joined Crewe Alexandra on loan. He played fifteen times for the Alex before returning to Anfield. He later returned to Gresty Road after a brief spell with Rotherham United. All change 1985 - Future reds winger Jimmy Carter joined Queens Park Rangers from Crystal Palace on a free transfer. He did not make the first team at Loftus Road, moving on to Millwall for £15,000 in March 1987. 1998 - Former youth winger Stuart Quinn, who featured in our victorious FA Youth Cup campaign in 1996, signed for Southport from Altrincham. He only made three appearances for the Haig Avenue side. 1994 - Ex-loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe joined Peterborough United on loan from Stoke City, playing six times for the Posh. Simon on target 2006 - Future red András Simon netted for Hungary Under-17’s as they beat Bulgaria 3-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Armenia. Other reds games 2001 – John Arne Riise and Danny Murphy netted as we won 2-0 at Newcastle United. 1961 – We thumped Charlton Athletic 4-0 in a Second Division encounter at The Valley. Roger Hunt bagged a brace, with Kevin Lewis and Ian St. John also on target. 1895 – We beat Burton Wanderers 4-1 in a Second Division meeting in L4 with Harry Bradshaw and Frank Becton each netting twice. Also in international action 2009 – Keeper Dean Bouzanis played for Australia Under-20’s as they lost 3-0 to Costa Rica in the World Championship Finals in Egypt, while Péter Gulácsi and András Simon both featured as Hungary thumped South Africa 4-0. 2018 – Ki-Jana Hoever played for the Dutch Under-17’s in their 6-0 thumping of Montenegro in a European Championships qualifier in Sweden. 2022 - Darwin Núñez scored his first goal as a reds player as Uruguay beat Canada 2-0 in a friendly in Slovakia. Also in action were James Balagizi, Owen Beck, Alisson Becker, Conor Bradley, Luke Chambers, Luis Díaz, Harvey Elliott, Melkamu Frauendorf, Lee Jonas, Diogo Jota, Isaac Mabaya, Kostas Tsimikas, ex-reds Rhian Brewster, Steven Caulker, Sadio Mané, Takumi Minamino, Xherdan Shaqiri and Luis Suárez, and future reds Wataru Endō and Alexis Mac Allister, with Steve Clarke and Rigobert Song both taking charge of their countries. -
The start of a dynasty 1974 - Bob Paisley was appointed Manager, a fortnight after Bill Shankly’s resignation. He became Britain’s most successful boss, leading us to six League titles, three European Cups, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, three League Cups and five Charity Shields in just nine years in charge. In comes Milan 2001 - Milan Baroš signed from Baník Ostrava for £3.2m, although he was not granted a work permit and allowed to come to Anfield for another five months. He bagged 27 goals in 108 reds games, before moving to Aston Villa for £6.5m in August 2005, having helped us to claim the UEFA Champions League and Worthington Cup. To the World Cup Final 1966 - Roger Hunt played in England’s 2-1 World Cup Semi-final defeat of Portugal at Wembley. He would shortly become the first red to claim football’s top honour while with the club. Double debutants 2005 - Peter Crouch and Momo Sissoko both made their reds debuts as we won 3-1 at FBK Kaunas in the first leg of our Champions League Second Round qualifier, with Jamie Carragher nabbing his first goal for more than six years! Djibril Cissé also scored with Steven Gerrard converting a penalty. Carra said, “If I'd have known I was going to score against Kaunas I would have worn a t-shirt under my Liverpool shirt with Michael’s name on it. I want to dedicate that goal to Michael Shields and all his family who are suffering so badly right now.” Another win 2020 – We came from a goal down to win 3-1 behind closed doors at Newcastle United to finish the season on a club record 99 points, eighteen points ahead of runners up Manchester City. Dwight Gayle scored after just 25 seconds, the most recent of his five goals past us, but Virgil van Dijk headed up level, with Divock Origi and Sadio Mané both on target after the break. Rafa’s first capture 2004 - Josemi signed from Málaga for £2m, becoming new boss Rafael Benítez’s first signing. He made just 35 reds appearances at right-back before joining Villarreal in exchange for Jan Kromkamp in January 2006. Wingers on the move 2006 - Jermaine Pennant signed from Birmingham City for £6.7m. He made 81 appearances, bagging three goals before joining Real Zaragoza in July 2009 after a five-month loan spell with Portsmouth. On the same day, it was announced that Paul Anderson and Scott Carson had signed new four- and five-year contracts respectively. 2012 - Paul Anderson joined Bristol City from Nottingham Forest on a free transfer, scoring three times in 23 games for the Robins before moving to Ipswich Town in a swap deal for Jay Emmanuel-Thomas a year later. Stéph on the move 2005 - Stéphane Henchoz signed for Wigan Athletic. He had made a total of 205 reds appearances, forming a rock-solid partnership with Sami Hyypiä, helping us to claim five trophies in 2001 and another League Cup two years later. He played 32 times for the Latics before rejoining Blackburn Rovers in September 2006. Birth and death 1928 - Half-back and reds skipper Johnny Wheeler was born in Crosby. He joined his cousin Ronnie Moran at Anfield when he signed from Bolton Wanderers for £9,000 in September 1956 and made 177 appearances, bagging 23 goals. One of his greatest games came in November 1956, when he netted a four-minute hat-trick against Port Vale. He was appointed player-manager of New Brighton in May 1963, but did not take up the post, becoming Assistant Trainer at Bury instead, where he stayed until 1969. 1963 – Scottish outside-right Danny McRorie died. He had bagged six goals in 35 reds games after signing from Morton for £1,500 in November 1930, moving on to Rochdale in October 1933. Justice denied 2000 - The judge in the trial of retired Chief Superintendent David Duckenfield, the police officer in charge at Hillsborough, ruled that he should not have to face a retrial, after the jury could not agree on a verdict. Off the mark 2009 - Krisztián Németh bagged a brace, his first reds goals, as we thumped a Singapore League Select XI 5-0 in their National Stadium. The other goals came from Andriy Voronin, Albert Riera and Fernando Torres. 2002 - The reds thumped a Swiss XI 5-1 at their pre-season training camp. El-Hadji Diouf and Grégory Vignal both scored their first reds goals, while Neil Mellor netted a brace in his first senior appearance. Milan Baroš added the other. Starting the right way 1968 - Roger Hunt grabbed a brace as we kicked off our pre-season campaign with a 3-1 win over Linfield in Belfast. Tony Hateley bagged the other, while Ray Clemence made an early appearance as a substitute. 1995 - Stan Collymore made his reds bow as we beat Birmingham City in the pre-season T.N.T. Inter-City Challenge Cup 1-0 at St. Andrews, thanks to an Ian Rush strike. Jari in Amsterdam 2001 - Ex-Ajax star Jari Litmanen struck the only goal of the game for us against Rafael Benítez’s Valencia to send the Amsterdam ArenA crowd wild. It was a brilliant volley after a fifty-yard run and superb cross from Bernard Diomède. Leverkusen for the first time 1991 - We encountered Bayer 04 Leverkusen for the first time, holding them to a goalless draw in their Ulrich-Haberland-Stadion in a pre-season friendly. Spectators were allowed in for free to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the Bayer company moving to Leverkusen. Off to a bad start 1994 - We kicked off our pre-season campaign by going down 4-1 at First Division Bolton Wanderers, with Ian Rush grabbing our late consolation. Defenders signing on 2021 – Right-back Conor Bradley signed a new contract. He has so far made five senior reds appearances. On the same day, left-back Yasser Larouci joined French side Troyes, after being released by the reds after just two senior outings. 2022 – Left-back Luke Chambers renewed his deal with the reds, making it onto the first-team bench twice in the following campaign. Taking home the bacon 1987 - The reds beat Danish side Aalborg Chang 4-0 in a friendly to celebrate their 75th anniversary. John Aldridge grabbed a brace, including one from the spot, while John Barnes netted for the second consecutive game. The scoring was completed by Ronnie Whelan. Other foreign friendlies 2018 – We beat Manchester City 2-1 in the International Champions Cup in New Jersey. He joined the reds in November 2011 from Californian side De Anza Force, becoming a reserves regular despite a series of serious injuries. He was released in June 2015. Strong no more 2013 - Utility player Geoff Strong died in Southport after suffering with Alzheimer’s disease. He made 201 reds appearances after moving from Arsenal in November 1964 for a club record £40,000, netting 33 times and winning a League title medal and the FA Charity Shield the year after helping us to our first ever FA Cup triumph. He left the reds to join Coventry City for £29,500 in August 1970. Other birthdays 1972 - Bjørn Tore Kvarme was born in Trondheim, Norway. He joined the reds in January 1997 on a Bosman free transfer from Rosenborg BK as a replacement for John Scales, and quickly showed his worth. He signed from Partick Thistle for £100,000 in May 1977 and was a classy figure in the centre of our defence on 620 occasions, notching fourteen times and helping us to an amazing trophy haul including eight League titles, three European Cups, two FA Cups, three League Cups and four FA Charity Shields. Other birthdays 1944 - Inside-left Gordon Wallace was born in Lanark. He signed professional terms in July 1961 but only made 22 first-team appearances, netting six times, with his most famous game being the first to be screened on the BBC’s Match Of The Day programme, when he grabbed a brace as we beat Arsenal 3-2 at Anfield in August 1964. He had also netted twice on our European debut against Icelandic champions Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur earlier that week. He left in October 1967 to join Crewe Alexandra. 1941 - Tony Hateley was born in Derby. He became our record signing when he joined from Chelsea in July 1967 for £96,000 and got off to a flyer at Anfield, grabbing 27 goals in 52 appearances in his first season. He had made 184 reds appearances following his £3.75m transfer from Racing Club de Lens in May 1999, scoring nineteen times, including a crucial strike in Istanbul. As well as the Champions League, he helped us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups. 1974 – Midfielder Trevor Storton was sold to Chester. He had struck eight times in 118 League games for Tranmere Rovers before switching to Anfield for £25,000 in July 1972. Honest John 1910 - John McKenna was named President of the Football League, after the first ever elections to fill this post. He was the reds’ first ever Manager, leading us to the Lancashire League and two Second Division titles, as well as holding the post of Director for the club’s first thirty years. George arrives 1895 – Centre-forward George Allan signed from Leith Athletic for £100. He went on to score 56 goals in 96 reds games across two spells, but had to endure an eight-match suspension from the Scottish FA later that year as he had also signed for St. Bernard’s at the same time as moving to Anfield! He also has the distinction of being the first reds player to represent Scotland. Defenders on their way out 2016 – Ex-reds left-back John Arne Riise announced his retirement from football. He made 348 reds appearances, scoring 31 times, following his £4m arrival from AS Monaco in June 2001, but left for Roma for the same fee in June 2008. He helped us to win the European Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and two FA Charity Shields in his time at Anfield. He also became his country’s most capped player, winning 110 in total. 2007 - Jon Otsemobor joined Norwich City on a free transfer from Crewe Alexandra, after one goal in 65 outings for the Alex in total. 2006 - Young American centre-back Zak Whitbread joined Millwall for £200,000 after a successful loan spell as they were relegated to League One. Red arrivals 1914 - Inside-right Fred Pagnam joined from Blackpool for £75. He struck an astonishing thirty times in just 39 reds games, moving to Arsenal in October 1919. He later had a successful managerial career with Watford and the Turkish national side, amongst others. 1937 – Scottish left-winger George Paterson signed from the Hall Russell’s works team. He struck once in three outings, moving on to Swindon Town for their record fee in October 1946. He later returned to Anfield in a coaching role under Bill Shankly. Ephraim the first 1921 - Full-back Ephraim Longworth became the first red to captain England, aged 33 years and 231 days, as he won his second cap in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Belgium in Brussels. Clubmate Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers netted his first England goal in the same game. Wembley disappointment 1977 - Our first treble dream died as we lost the FA Cup Final to Manchester United. Jimmy Case equalised just two minutes after Stuart Pearson had given United the lead. However, only three minutes later Jimmy Greenhoff scored the winning goal, one of his five past us, to take the cup to Old Trafford for the first time in fourteen years. Births and death 1963 - Danish defender Torben Piechnik was born in Copenhagen. He only played 24 times after Graeme Souness signed him from F.C. København for £500,000 in September 1992, having helped his country to a shock win at Euro ’92, but Roy Evans released him after just two seasons at Anfield. 1896 – Inside-left Hector Lawson was born in Shettleston, Glasgow. To Cardiff once more 2006 - We beat Chelsea 2-1 at Old Trafford in the FA Cup Semi-final. John Arne Riise’s free-kick opened the scoring before Luis García extended our lead early in the second half with a sublime volley. Didier Drogba’s header, one of his eleven goals past us, ensured a nervous last twenty minutes, but future red Joe Cole blazed over with the Blues’ only real chance of note as we hung on to reach our thirteenth FA Cup Final. En route to gay Paree 1981 - Howard Gayle came on as a substitute for the injured Kenny Dalglish after just nine minutes and ran the Bayern München defence ragged, before later himself being substituted by Jimmy Case. We held the German champions to a 1-1 draw in the Olympic Stadium, with Ray Kennedy putting us in front with just seven minutes left before Karl-Heinz Rummenigge equalised, to make it through to our third European Cup Final in five years, on away goals after a goalless first meeting. Double red 1969 – We were held to a goalless draw at Coventry City with Alun Evans and City’s Maurice Setters both sent off for fighting. Under twelve thousand 1959 - We hosted our lowest post-war League crowd of only 11,976 as we beat Sc***horpe United 3-0 in the Second Division. Alan Arnell netted his 35th and final reds goal, with Billy Liddell and Fred Morris also on the scoresheet. Happy birthday to the reserves 1956 - Left-back Brian Kettle was born in Prescot. He signed for the reds in May 1973 but only made four senior appearances as his route to the first-team was blocked first by Alec Lindsay, then Joey Jones and Alan Kennedy, and he moved to Wigan Athletic in August 1980. 1983 – Former Finnish reserves striker Daniel Sjölund was born in Marieham. He never made the first team after arriving Anfield from West Ham United in November 2000 as part of the deal that took Rigobert Song in the opposite direction, moving on to Swedish side Djurgårdens IF in January 2004. 1993 - Midfielder Craig Roddan was born in Fazakerley. He joined the Academy from Wigan Athletic in 2007 but was released in the summer of 2014. 2001 – Centre-back Morgan Boyes was born in Chester. He put through his own net while making his senior debut in the 5-0 EFL Cup loss at Aston Villa in December 2019, also featuring in the FA Cup win over Shrewsbury Town at Anfield two months later. The big Pole in our goal made 186 reds appearances after signing from Feyenoord for £4.85m in August 2001, helping us to glory in Istanbul, as well as the Worthington Cup in 2003. He left to join Real Madrid in July 2007, although he barely featured for their first team. A new boss 1951 – Don Welsh took charge of his first reds game as Jack Haigh nabbed the only goal of our top-flight meeting with Charlton Athletic at Anfield. Left-back Eddie Spicer reached a century of League appearances in this game. Away goals galore 1985 - John Wark netted an eighteen-minute hat-trick in our 5-0 win at West Bromwich Albion, with Steve Nicol and Kenny Dalglish also on target, while Bruce Grobbelaar saved a Derek Statham penalty. He signed from Bradford City in October 1929, but only played three senior games before moving on to Derry City in 1932. 1947 – David Ashworth died. He was appointed as reds boss in December 1919. He had previously guided Oldham Athletic from non-League into the top flight, to whom he returned in December 1922 with the reds en route to retaining the League title he had led them to the previous season. 2011 – Ex-reds midfielder Trevor Storton died. He struck eight times in 118 League games for Tranmere Rovers before switching to Anfield for £25,000 in July 1972. He only played twelve times in two years before joining Chester, for whom he turned out more than 400 times. Double departure 1897 – Forward Malcolm McVean and inside-right Jimmy Ross were both sold to Burnley, although the Clarets got relegated at the end of that campaign. McVean had signed from Third Lanark in 1892, scoring our first ever League goal, bagging 43 in total in 126 reds games. Tottenham Hotspur went ahead at Wembley early on through Steve Archibald, one of his six goals past us, but Ronnie Whelan grabbed a late equaliser past ex-red Ray Clemence, before netting a second in extra time. Ian Rush added a third, as Spurs suffered their first defeat at Wembley, and their first loss in nine domestic cup finals. Skipper Graeme Souness lifted the old three-handled trophy, while former captain Phil Thompson held the new Milk Cup aloft. Stevie’s derby treble 2012 - Steven Gerrard scored a hat-trick past Everton at Anfield in his 400th League game as we won 3-0, with his third goal being the club’s 300th derby goal. Visiting boss David Moyes was hours from celebrating his tenth anniversary as their Manager, still without having tasted victory at Anfield. Heading towards Madrid 2019 – We won 3-1 at Bayern München in the second leg of our UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie, following the goalless first game at Anfield. Sadio Mané put us ahead but Joël Matip put through his own net before the break. Virgil van Dijk and Mané both then headed in after half time. Milan in Barcelona 2002 - Milan Baroš made his reds debut as a substitute in our goalless Champions League draw with Barcelona in the Camp Nou. This result left us needing to beat Roma by two clear goals at Anfield to be sure of a place in the Quarter-finals. This UEFA Cup Quarter-final first leg tie ended 1-1, but was marred by El-Hadji Diouf spitting into the crowd. Unfortunately, the Scottish side won the Anfield return 2-0. Mixed derby outcomes 1979 - Andy King scored one of only four opposition goals in the League at Anfield that season, as we were held in this derby encounter. Kenny Dalglish bagged our goal on his hundredth reds appearance as well as suffering an injury, along with Phil Thompson and David Johnson. 1994 – Dave Watson headed the visitors in front in the 150th League derby before Ian Rush struck just nine seconds after the re-start. Robbie Fowler then netted to secure a 2-1 win, Roy Evans’ only victory over Everton as boss. Fowler’s goal was the last derby strike in front of the old standing Kop. 1988 - We took part in a testimonial match for the Blues’ legendary centre-half Brian Labone. John Toshack struck as Everton won 2-1 at Goodison Park. Red one-offs 1909 – Forward Dick Allman made his only reds appearance as we lost 2-1 to Bristol City at Anfield in a top-flight encounter. Tom Chorlton nabbed our goal from the spot, his eighth and final reds goal, with Willis Rippon bagging a brace for the visitors, including a penalty. 1920 - Keeper Tom Armstrong played his only reds game as we drew 2-2 with The Wednesday at Hillsborough in another First Division fixture. Dick Forshaw and Donald McKinlay struck within the last ten minutes. Incomings 1896 – Half-back Barney Battles arrived on loan from Celtic. He won the title two years running in Scotland, for Hearts in 1895 and then Celtic, joining the reds for just six weeks, featuring in two Second Division games and three of the four Test matches as we secured promotion, for which he received a special gold medal and a cheque for a “handsome sum”. He re-signed from Dundee in March 1898 for £20 but only played one more game before joining Celtic for a third spell seven months later. On the same day, Scottish half-back Tom Cleghorn signed from Blackburn Rovers, scoring once in seventy games before moving to Portsmouth in August 1899. 1969 – Left-back Alec Lindsay signed from his hometown club Bury for £67,000. He netted eighteen times in 248 reds games, helping us to the League and UEFA Cup in 1973, and FA Cup and FA Charity Shield the following year, before leaving for Stoke City in September 1977. Tons up 1976 – Steve Heighway played his 300th reds game as John Toshack appeared for the 200th time, with Phil Neal scoring the only goal of our League game at Birmingham City from the spot late on. Goalscoring beginning and end 1929 – Centre-half David Davidson bagged the first of his two reds goals late on as we beat West Ham United 2-1 at Anfield after eight games without a win, with John Lindsay also on target. Vic Watson bagged one of his nine goals against the reds. 1993 – Don Hutchison scored his tenth and last goal for the club, opening the scoring as we won 2-1 at Middlesbrough in our last trip to Ayresome Park. Steve Nicol put through his own net, with Ian Rush bagging a late winner. Making an exhibition of themselves 2007 - Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, Robbie Fowler and Bolo Zenden all played for a Europe XI who lost 4-3 to Manchester United at Old Trafford, in a game played to celebrate the fiftieth anniversaries of the Treaty of Rome and Manchester United in European competition. Ex-red El-Hadji Diouf bagged a brace, including a penalty. Nice one Cyril 1943 - Cyril Done scored a hat-trick as we thumped Bury 7-2 at Gigg Lane in a game that counted for both the Wartime League and the War League Cup. Michael Hulligan added a brace, with our other goals coming from Jack Pilling and a Griffiths own goal. Red farewells 1897 – Inside-left Davy Hannah played his 33rd and last reds game as we drew 0-0 with Aston Villa at their Perry Barr ground. 1926 - Fred Baron bagged his seventh and final reds goal. Harry Chambers was also on target as we lost 3-2 at Sunderland in a top-flight encounter. Donald McKinlay missed a penalty, while Dave Halliday scored two of his thirteen goals past us, with Jack Prior also on target. 1958 – Welsh forward Tony Rowley was sold to Third Division side Tranmere Rovers, for whom he continued to score at a rate of one goal every other game. He had bagged a treble on his debut after signing from Stourbridge in October 1953, going on to net 38 times in 61 reds games. 2010 – Keeper Charlie Ashcroft died. He signed for the reds in December 1943 and appeared 89 times before joining Ipswich Town in June 1955. Disappointment at Bramall Lane We have twice lost First Division fixtures at Sheffield United on this day in history. 1954 - Billy Liddell netted our consolation from the spot, his hundredth reds strike, as we lost 3-1. Geoff Twentyman put through his own net, with Joe Shaw and Sam McNab also scoring for the home side as Bob Paisley featured for the 277th and last time. 1965 - We went down 3-0 to send us down to ninth in the table. Alan Birchenall struck one of his four goals past us, with Barry Hartle and Alan Woodward also on target as keeper Tommy Lawrence played his hundredth League game for the reds. Reds keepers in opposition 1920 - Two reds keepers faced each other in an international as Ken Campbell played for Scotland, who beat Ireland, for whom Elisha Scott was making his international debut. The game ended 3-0 at Celtic Park, with fellow red Billy Lacey also playing for the visitors. 1922 - England beat Wales 1-0 in an international at Anfield. Tom Bromilow played for the home side on his club ground. Off on loan 2003 - Jon Otsemobor joined Third Division Hull City on loan. He bagged three goals in nine games for the Tigers before returning to Anfield. 2007 - Centre-back Godwin Antwi joined Accrington Stanley, for whom he made nine League Two outings. 2009 – Former reserves keeper Tony Warner joined Leicester City on loan from Hull City. He played four times for them as they progressed towards the League One title. For the last time 1937 – Forward Jimmy Collins played his seventh and final reds game as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Preston North End. Harry Holdcroft saved a penalty from the reds’ Tommy Cooper in the first half. Alf Hanson then converted a spot-kick after the break. Vladi on target 1996 - Vladimír Šmicer netted for the Czech Republic Under-21’s as they lost 2-1 to Spain in a European Championships qualifier in Granada. On the same day future red Stéphane Henchoz played for Switzerland in their 1-1 friendly draw in Luxembourg. Souey’s debut 1974 - Future red Graeme Souness won his first cap for Scotland Under-23’s as they lost 2-0 to England at St. James’ Park. Other reds games 1999 – We lost 3-2 at Derby County with Robbie Fowler on target, once from the spot. Deon Burton netted for the Rams before Paolo Wanchope bagged the last two of his four goals against the reds. 1996 – Wimbledon held us to a 2-2 draw at Anfield. Steve McManaman and Stan Collymore struck our goals. Efan Ekoku scored for the visitors before Dean Holdsworth nabbed one of his four past us. 1971 – We lost 1-0 at Coventry City with John O’Rourke pouncing after Ray Clemence had pushed a free-kick onto the post. Also in international action 1988 – Ex-red Avi Cohen played for Israel as they beat Taiwan 5-1 in an Olympics qualifier in Sydney. 1991 – Future red Jari Litmanen played for Finland in their 1-1 friendly draw in Poland. 2008 – Future red Mamadou Sakho played for France Under-18’s as they drew 1-1 with Germany in Reutlingen. 2014 – Future red Marko Grujić featured as Serbia Under-19’s beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 1-0. 2015 – Future red Bobby Adekanye played for the Dutch Under-16’s in their 4-0 defeat of the Republic of Ireland in Hoorn. -
R.I.P. Bob Paisley 1996 - The most successful manager in the English game, Bob Paisley, died aged 77. He led us to six League titles, three European Cups, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, three League Cups and five FA Charity Shields in his nine years in charge. R.I.P. Bob. 2020 – Outside-right Brian Jackson died. He signed from Leyton Orient in November 1951 for £6,500 and forward Don Woan. He netted eleven times in 133 reds games before joining Port Vale for £1,700 in July 1958. 1942 - Inside-forward Edgar Chadwick died. He had won the League with Everton in 1891, and joined Burnley aged thirty. He top scored with ten goals as they were relegated to the Second Division, before moving on to Southampton in the Southern League. As Burnley still held his Football League registration, the reds had to pay the Clarets £35 in May 1902. However, he only managed 45 reds appearances, netting seven times, and later had a successful career as a coach in Germany and the Netherlands, including guiding the Dutch national side to bronze medals in the 1908 and 1912 Olympics. Happy birthday Kev 1951 - Kevin Keegan was born in Armthorpe, Yorkshire. He arrived for £33,000 from Sc***horpe United in May 1971 and netted exactly a century of goals in 323 reds games, helping to fire us to the European Cup, three League titles, two UEFA Cups and an FA Cup before moving to Hamburger SV for £500,000 in June 1977. 1975 - Ex-reds reserves midfielder Phil Charnock was born in Southport. He became our youngest ever player in Europe when he came on as a substitute against Apollon Limassol in September 1992, only playing two senior games in total before moving to Crewe Alexandra in December 1986. 1872 – Forward Gerald Dewhurst was born in London. He only played one reds game, guesting for us as we beat Crewe Alexandra 2-0 in a Second Division fixture in March 1894, while remaining an amateur player with Corinthians. 1999 – Winger Bobby Adekanye was born in Ibadan, Nigeria. He arrived from Barcelona in the summer of 2015, playing regularly for the Under-23’s before moving to S.S. Lazio to July 2019. 2005 – Left-back Calum Scanlon was born in Birmingham. He signed from Birmingham City in February 2021, turning pro in March 2022. Trebles galore We have been treated to a number of hat-tricks on this day over the years. 2018 - Sadio Mané netted three times as we trounced Porto 5-0 in the first leg of our UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first leg in Portugal. Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah also struck, with the Egyptian reaching thirty goals in his debut season. 1998 - Michael Owen notched a treble in a 3-3 draw at Sheffield Wednesday. Benito Carbone, Paolo Di Canio and Andy Hinchcliffe struck for the Owls. Our previous two fixtures on this day also witnessed hat-tricks. 1994 - Matt Le Tissier struck the last three of his seven goals past us, including two penalties, in Southampton’s 4-2 League win at The Dell, with the home side racing into a four-goal lead, as his first goal came after just 28 seconds. Julian Dicks converted a penalty after the snow fell, with Ian Rush also on target in what was Alan Ball’s first home game in charge of the Saints. Craig Maskell also netted for the Saints. 1987 - Rush scored his sixteenth and final reds hat-trick to help secure a 4-3 League win over Leicester City at Anfield, with Paul Walsh also on the scoresheet. Alan Smith struck two of his nine goals against the reds, with Craig Johnston putting through his own net. 1931 - Another red scored a hat-trick at Hillsborough, as Gordon Hodgson notched four times, including a penalty, in our 5-3 League win over Sheffield Wednesday, with Dave Wright also on target. Jack Ball bagged two of his four goals against the reds, with George Stephenson netting one of his four past us. Also recently 2016 – We thumped relegation-bound Aston Villa 6-0 at Villa Park, with Daniel Sturridge and James Milner on target in the first half. Emre Can, Divock Origi and Nathaniel Clyne all also struck before veteran centre-half headed in his only reds goal. 2015 – We won our FA Cup Fifth Round tie 2-1 at Crystal Palace. Fraizer Campbell scored the most recent of his four goals against us to date after a quarter of an hour, with Daniel Sturridge and Adam Lallana both notching in the second half. Dick’s birthday 1904 - Outside-right Dick Edmed was born in Gillingham. He signed from his hometown club for £1,800 in January 1926 and netted 46 times in 170 reds games before joining Bolton Wanderers in May 1932. He died on his eightieth birthday. Into the final 1978 - We held Arsenal to a goalless draw at Highbury in our League Cup Semi-final second leg to progress 2-1 on aggregate. However, we lost the Final to Nottingham Forest, after a replay. 1984 - We reached our fourth consecutive Final in the competition, winning the second leg of our Semi-final 2-0 at Third Division Walsall thanks to goals from Ian Rush and Ronnie Whelan, to go through 4-2 on aggregate. Unfortunately, seventeen travelling supporters needed hospital treatment when a barrier crumpled in the away end, with the game having to be delayed by a quarter of an hour. Beating the Gunners 2006 - Luis García grabbed the only goal of the game in the dying minutes after Jens Lehmann had beaten out Didi Hamann’s long-range effort, to defeat Arsenal at Anfield in our Premiership encounter. Lehmann had saved a spot-kick from Steven Gerrard in the first half, while Jamie Carragher was playing his 400th reds game. On the same day, young Argentinean centre-back Gabriel Paletta agreed to join the reds from Club Atlético Banfield for £2m. He had to wait until July to arrive, featuring just eight times for the first team before returning to his native land to join Boca Juniors in August 2007. Ged honoured 2002 - Gérard Houllier was given a special UEFA award following our remarkable five-trophy haul in 2001. On the way out 2013 – We lost 2-0 at Zenit St. Petersburg in the first leg of our UEFA Europa League Round of 32 tie, with Hulk and Sergei Semak netting as we missed a host of chances. Up against the Geordies We have twice faced Newcastle United on this day in history, without losing. 1925 - We were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield in a top-flight encounter, with Dick Forshaw on the scoresheet. Jock McNab, Walter Wadsworth and United’s Tommy Urwin were all dismissed! 1948 - We won a friendly 3-0 in front of 44,830 fans at St. James’ Park, with Billy Liddell, Kevin Baron and Willie Fagan on target. Beginnings and ends 1981 - Kevin Sheedy made the first of only five reds appearances in a 2-2 draw at home to Birmingham City, before his departure across Stanley Park. Ray Kennedy had to step in as an emergency centre-half for this game due to an injury crisis. 1959 - Forward Bobby Murdoch played his nineteenth and final reds game as we lost a Second Division match 3-0 at Cardiff City. He moved on to Barrow seven months later. Derek Tapscott struck two of his six goals past us, with Brayley Reynolds netting one of his seven against the reds, while half-back Johnny Wheeler reached a century of reds outings. Milestone goal 1914 – Tom Miller struck either side of a first-half brace by George Lillycrop, which was our thousandth goal in top-flight football, as we lost 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers with forward Jack Parkinson playing his 219th and last reds game. Zico on the way out 1995 - Phil Neal was sacked as Manager of Coventry City. He had been in charge for sixteen months, only losing twenty of his 67 games in charge. His major legacy to the club was selling Phil Babb to the reds, and signing Dion Dublin, as well as ex-red Mike Marsh. Lacey for Ireland 1914 - Billy Lacey struck twice past ex-reds keeper Sam Hardy, his only goals for his country as a reds player and last for the Ireland side as they beat England 3-0 in a British International Championships game at Ayresome Park. 1919 - Lacey also played for his country in a 2-2 draw with Wales in Belfast in the same competition, and later represented both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Harry’s bow 1925 - Ex-red Harry Beadles won the first of his two caps for Wales as they lost 3-1 to Scotland in the British International Championships at Tynecastle. Kenny against the mighty Emlyn 1973 - Emlyn Hughes lined up against future clubmate Kenny Dalglish as England thumped Scotland 5-0 in a friendly at Hampden Park. 1979 - Avi Cohen won his last cap in his first spell as a Maccabi Tel Aviv player as Israel beat Greece 4-1 in a friendly in Tel-Aviv. Youngsters in action 2002 – Future red Alberto Aquilani won his first cap for Italy Under-18’s in their 3-2 defeat by Germany. On the same day, Jon Otsemobor and John Welsh made debuted for England Under-19’s in their 3-1 friendly defeat of Germany at Portman Road, with future red Andy Lonergan winning his second and last cap at this level and fellow future red Glen Johnson also featuring. 2001 – Aquilani featured for the Under-16’s as they thumped Greece 4-0. Chris McGrath, Darren Potter and future red Yossi Benayoun also played for their countries that day. 2010 – Conor Coady captained England Under-17’s as they beat Ukraine 3-0 in the Algarve Tournament, with Jack Robinson, Andre Wisdom and future red Conor Thomas also in action. 2015 – Future red Wataru Endō captained Japan Under-22’s as they thrashed a Singapore Under-23’s side 8-1 in Kallang. 2017 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s as they beat the Netherlands 1-0 in the Algarve Tournament, with Rhian Brewster in action. On the move 2016 – Ex-reds Assistant Manager Pako Ayestarán joined Valencia's coaching staff, taking over as boss after Gary Neville’s sacking the following month. 2015 – Ex-reserves midfielder Craig Roddan signed for Northern Premier League side Witton Albion, being released after eleven months. On the same day, future red Bobby Adekanye played for the Dutch Under-16’s in their 1-0 friendly defeat in Portugal with future red Ozan Kabak featuring for Turkey Under-15’s as they drew 0-0 with their Dutch counterparts in Side. 2012 - Sammy Lee was appointed Head of Academy Coaching at Bolton Wanderers. On the same day, reserves right-winger Toni Silva joined Northampton Town on loan, going on to score once in fifteen games for the Cobblers. 2011 - Hungarian forward András Simon signed for Dutch side S.B.V. Excelsior, but he only played once before joining Győri ETO in July 2011. 2002 – Centre-back Kolo Touré joined Arsenal from ASEC Mimosas in his native Ivory Coast for just £150,000 after a short trial. He helped them to claim the League title without losing a game in 2004, as well as the FA Cup and two FA Community Shields, one being at our expense. He scored fourteen goals in 326 games for the Gunners. 1997 - Ex-loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe joined York City on loan from Stoke City. He only played twice for the Minstermen before returning to the Victoria Ground. Michael the romantic 2004 - Michael Owen got engaged to Louise Bonsall. Hodgson’s seventeenth 1935 - Gordon Hodgson scored his seventeenth and final reds hat-trick in a 4-2 League win at Leeds United, with Alf Hanson also netting. This remains a club record. Arthur Hydes struck the last two of his four goals against the reds that day. 1929 - We also faced Leeds, drawing 2-2 at Elland Road, with Jimmy McDougall scoring as centre-forward Albert Whitehurst struck his second and final goal in his eighth and last reds appearance. Right-back Bob Done put through his own net, while Thomas Jennings netted his ninth and last goal against the reds. Keeper Elisha Scott missed the game to feature for Northern Ireland in their 2-2 British International Championships draw with Wales in Wrexham. 1946 - Our other trip to face the Yorkshire outfit on this day came in a Wartime League match that we lost 3-0. Reds galore 1952 - Our record home attendance was set, as 61,905 crammed into Anfield to watch us beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 in the FA Cup Fourth Round. Bob Paisley and Cyril Done were on target inside the first nine minutes that day. Unfortunately, we went out at Burnley in the next round. Most recently 2014 – We were held to a 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion, with future Baggie Daniel Sturridge putting the reds in front. A wayward pass from Kolo Touré handed ex-Blue Victor Anichebe a golden opportunity to equalise that he capitalised on. Martin Kelly played his 62nd and final reds game. 2016 – Jordan Henderson played his 200th reds game as we lost 2-0 at eventual champions Leicester City thanks to a Jamie Vardy brace, the first of his ten goals past us to date. Robbie departs 2009 - Robbie Keane returned to Tottenham Hotspur for an initial £15m fee, having travelled in the opposite direction for £19.3m seven months previously. He had struck seven times in 28 reds outings. Pepe sets a record 2008 - Pepe Reina kept his fiftieth clean sheet in the League, in his 92nd game, to set a new club record as we beat Sunderland 3-0 at Anfield. Peter Crouch and Fernando Torres struck before Steven Gerrard converted a late penalty. On the same day, future red Nikola Sarić played for Denmark Under-17’s as they lost 3-0 to England in the Algarve Tournament. Taki off 2021 – Japanese forward Takumi Minamino joined Southampton on loan for the rest of the season, netting twice in ten outings before returning to Anfield. Two defenders depart 2004 - Jon Otsemobor joined Bolton Wanderers on loan. He had made five starts for the reds that season, but only appeared once while at the Reebok Stadium, a 3-1 defeat by Manchester City. He moved on to League One strugglers Rotherham United in the summer. On the same day, Abel Xavier’s contract was cancelled by mutual consent. The Portuguese defender then joined mid-table German Bundesliga side Hannover 96. He had netted twice in 21 reds games, of which we only lost three, including on his debut in a 6-0 thumping of Ipswich Town at Portman Road. Double century 2003 - We secured our 200th Premiership win. A Milan Baroš header and a Steven Gerrard thunderbolt give us an early cushion at West Ham United. A late Emile Heskey goal, his third header in as many League games, wrapped up a comfortable 3-0 win over the Hammers, who were relegated at the end of the season. This goal trickled over the line with such a lack of pace that it failed to actually hit the back of the net! Larry’s farewell 1974 - Larry Lloyd played his 218th and final reds game as substitute Peter Cormack struck the only goal of the game in the last minute against Norwich City at Anfield. He moved to Coventry City that summer, before joining Nottingham Forest. On our way to Wembley 1982 - We edged towards our second consecutive League Cup Final as Terry McDermott and Ian Rush both struck in the first four minutes of the second half in a 2-0 win at Ipswich Town in our Semi-final first leg. We drew the return to reach the Final 4-2 on aggregate. This was the first of three consecutive matches in which we faced the Tractor Boys. When is a win not a win 1895 - We won our First Round FA Cup match with Barnsley St. Peters 2-1 in wintry conditions, after extra time, thanks to goals from Malcolm McVean and Jimmy Ross. However, a replay was ordered following a protest as the home side had not agreed to the extra period decided upon by the referee. Happily, we also won this second meeting, this time 4-0 at Anfield. However, we went out to Nottingham Forest at the next stage. Jimmy’s hat-trick 1924 - Centre-forward Jimmy Walsh grabbed a treble as we came from behind to win an FA Cup Second Round tie 4-1 at holders Bolton Wanderers. Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers also notched as we progressed as far as the Fourth Round that season before being knocked out by Newcastle United. John Smith struck one of his seven goals against the reds. Arthur on target again 1918 - Inside-forward Arthur Metcalf struck for the third consecutive reds game as we thumped Southport Central 6-1 in a Wartime League match at Anfield. Harry Lewis and Thomas Bennett both netted braces with our other goal coming from Donald McKinlay. Shanks off the mark 1938 - Bill Shankly scored his first League goal for Preston North End as they came from two goals down to hold us to a 2-2 top-flight draw at Anfield as we suffered our fourth draw in our last five League games. Jack Balmer netted for the reds, with Willie Fagan scoring from the spot and Bud Maxwell nabbing the last of his seven strikes past us. Births and death 1997 – Spanish winger Sergi Canós was born in Nules. He arrived from Barcelona in the summer of 2013. He failed to break into the first team, moving on to Norwich City for an initial £2.5m in July 2016. 1966 - Reserves winger Brian Mooney was born in Dublin. He signed from Home Farm for £20,000 in August 1983 but only ever played one senior reds game, as a substitute for Jim Beglin in a League Cup win at Fulham in October 1986, moving on to Preston North End in November 1987. 1874 - Full-back John Stephenson was born in Leigh-on-Sea. He played for our second string in the Lancashire Combination, without ever making our first-team. He later played for Gainsborough Trinity, Swindon Town and Tottenham Hotspur, and sadly died aged just 34 following a bout of pneumonia. 1990 - Don Welsh died. He had guested for the reds during the Second World War, and later took charge at Anfield for 232 games over five years during the 1950’s. Death of a legend 2002 - Legendary reds centre-forward Albert Stubbins died. He struck 83 times in 178 reds matches after signing from Newcastle United for a British record £12,500 fee in September 1946, helping to power us to the first League championship played after the Second World War. He was also the only footballer to appear on the cover of The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album, and became a scout for the club in 1954, a post he held for the rest of the decade. 2010 – Israeli defender Avi Cohen died in Tel-Aviv, following a motorcycle crash. He was actually born in Egypt, and only made 24 appearances during his Anfield career after signing for £200,000 from Maccabi Tel-Aviv in July 1979, with his most memorable game coming in May 1980 as we clinched our twelfth League title. He put through his own net before scoring his only reds goal at the same end in the second half, as we beat Aston Villa 4-1. 2021 – Scouse forward Steve Peplow died. He joined the reds in June 1964, turning pro in January 1966 on his seventeenth birthday. He was subsequently named LMA Manager of the Year by a record margin. 1970 - Ex-red Sir Matt Busby was re-appointed as Manager of Manchester United following the sacking of Wilf McGuinness, remaining in the role for the rest of the season. 1921 - Alex Raisbeck was named as Secretary/Manager of Second Division Bristol City. Trebles galore 1977 - Terry McDermott grabbed a hat-trick as we thumped Hamburger SV 6-0 at Anfield in the second leg of the UEFA Super Cup, to win the trophy 7-1 on aggregate, with Phil Thompson, David Fairclough and Kenny Dalglish also on target. This game marked Kevin Keegan’s first return to Anfield after leaving for Germany in the summer, and he was roundly booed whenever he touched the ball. This was Bob Paisley’s 200th game in charge of the reds. 2017 – Philippe Coutinho scored three times as we trounced Spartak Moskva 7-0 at Anfield, our second victory of the UEFA Champions League group stage that season. The first came from the spot, with his second being his fiftieth for the club. Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah also struck, with Sadio Mané bagging a brace. 1930 - Bobby Gurney bagged three of his sixteen strikes against us as Sunderland beat us by the odd goal in eleven at Roker Park, with Tommy Lucas putting through his own net to open the scoring. Outside-right Danny McRorie struck his first reds goal with Fred Hopkin nabbing his twelfth and last for the club. Gordon Hodgson also added to a very late Jimmy Smith brace. We were without Hopkin for much of the game after he had to be carried off injured, spending half an hour unconscious in the dressing room. We therefore became the only visiting side to have twice scored five goals on Wearside without tasting victory, having also done so in a draw in January 1907. James Connor nabbed the first of his five goals past us, with Jimmy Leonard also on target. 1902 - Sam Raybould scored four goals, including a penalty, as we trounced Grimsby Town 9-2 in a top-flight game at Anfield. Edgar Chadwick and Arthur Goddard both also bagged braces, with George Livingstone also on target with his fourth and last strike for the club. Rushie’s testimonial 1994 - A testimonial match for Ian Rush was staged at Anfield, with the reds seeing off Celtic 6-0. The great man himself scored, with the other goals coming from Stig Inge Bjørnebye, Steve McManaman, Phil Babb, Neil Ruddock and a Mark McNally own goal. Sami’s record at the Bridge 2005 - Sami Hyypiä set a new club record for consecutive European games by an outfield player when he appeared for the 56th time in a row as our goalless draw at Chelsea ensured that we finished top of the group, with Dietmar Hamann managing to play the full game despite a horror tackle by Michael Essien. This guaranteed us a supposedly easier draw in the last sixteen, when we were paired with SL Benfica. 1987 - We entertained Chelsea in a live televised Sunday game, coming from behind to win this League meeting 2-1 thanks to a John Aldridge penalty and a late Steve McMahon goal, who notched in his third consecutive match. Gordon Durie had put the Blues ahead from the spot with one of his five strikes against the reds. Red centurions 2010 – Pepe Reina kept his hundredth clean sheet in the League, in a new club record 198 games. We beat Aston Villa 3-0 at Anfield, with David N’Gog and Ryan Babel both netting their final reds strikes and Martin Škrtel playing his hundredth game for the club. Maxi Rodríguez added the third as ex-reds boss Gérard Houllier was given a warm welcome on his first return to L4. Fernando Torres missed the game as he that day became a father for the second time, to Leo. 1986 – Ian Rush appeared for the reds for the 300th time, and the 200th time in the League as we lost 2-0 at Watford, thanks to goals from John McClelland and future red John Barnes. 1924 – Captain Donald McKinlay played his 300th reds game as West Bromwich Albion held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield, although he suffered an injury that kept him out for two months. Keeper Elisha Scott appeared in the League for the 200th time for the reds as Dick Forshaw gave us an early lead, with George James equalising inside the opening half hour. A few fans 2020 – We thrashed Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-0 at Anfield in front of just 2,000 fans as COVID restrictions were partially lifted. Mohamed Salah scored before the break, with Gini Wijnaldum and Joël Matip netting in the second half before Nélson Semedo put through his own net. Off for free 2000 - Steve Staunton rejoined Aston Villa on a free transfer after a second two-year spell at Anfield. He had struck seven times in 148 reds appearances in total. Turkish midfielder Nuri Şahin played his twelfth and last game for the reds, with the home side a man down for the final ten minutes after Giovanni Pasquale was sent off. 2014 – Sunderland held the reds to a goalless draw at Anfield as Martin Škrtel played his 200th League game for the club. 2015 – Škrtel put through his own net, a joint club record eighth own goal, as we lost 2-0 at Newcastle United with future red Gini Wijnaldum bagging the stoppage time second. Alberto Moreno had a leveller wrongly ruled out for offside. A win at Ewood 2008 - We won 3-1 at Blackburn Rovers, with Xabi Alonso and Yossi Benayoun striking after an hour. Roque Santa Cruz headed a goal back for the home side before Steven Gerrard bagged an injury time clincher. Team of the Year 2001 - The reds were named Team of the Year by the Sportswriters Association of Great Britain, following our five trophies that year. Signing on 1962 - Scottish full-back Bobby Thomson signed from Partick Thistle for £7,000. He only made eight first-team appearances before moving on to Luton Town in August 1965. Held in the North East 2003 - Danny Murphy put us in front at Newcastle United. It took an Alan Shearer penalty to level the scores as we held out with an injury-ravaged team, the last of his eight goals past us, with Emile Heskey playing in a withdrawn role. Steven Gerrard was making his 150th League appearance, while Jon Otsemobor made his League debut. Beaten by the mancs 1997 - We lost 3-1 at home to Manchester United as Roy Evans took charge for the 200th time. After a goalless first half, Andy Cole put the visitors ahead, following an error by Bjørn Tore Kvarme. Robbie Fowler then equalised from the spot after Michael Owen was fouled. However, David Beckham put United back in front from a free-kick before Cole added his second from a corner, another of his eleven goals against the reds. A talented Dane 2005 - Future red Daniel Agger was named ‘Talent of the year’ for the second successive year by the Danish FA. Mixed fortunes against Spurs We have twice met Tottenham Hotspur on this day in history. 1980 - We won a top-flight meeting at Anfield 2-1, with David Johnson and Ray Kennedy on target. This was Kenny Dalglish’s 147th consecutive League appearance for the reds, but he missed our next two First Division games after coming off in this match shortly after an hour. Steve Archibald struck the first of his six goals past us. 1972 - We lost 3-1 at White Hart Lane in a League Cup Fifth Round replay with Ian Callaghan nabbing our late consolation. Martin Chivers nabbed two of his seven strikes past the reds, with John Pratt also netting. Hosting the Robins 1926 - Wrexham visited Anfield for the first time, when they beat New Brighton 3-1 in the second replay of their FA Cup First Round tie. At the World Cup 2022 – Ex-red Xherdan Shaqiri was on the wrong end of a 6-1 thumping as Portugal knocked Switzerland out of the World Cup in Qatar in the Round of 16. First and last caps 2000 – Future red Jermaine Pennant won his only cap for England Under-17’s as they beat France 1-0 in a friendly. 2006 - Future reds loanee keeper Daniele Padelli won his fifth and final cap for Italy Under-20’s, while on loan at Crotone from Sampdoria, as they beat Germany 1-0. 1967 – Roger Hunt featured in England’s 2-2 friendly draw with the USSR at Wembley. 2019 – Isaac Mabaya played for England Under-16’s as they lost 1-0 to Mexico in Alicante. Happy birthdays 1930 - Left-half Geoff Twentyman was born in Brampton. He netted nineteen times in 184 reds games after signing for £10,000 from his hometown club Carlisle United in December 1953. He returned to Anfield as Chief Scout in 1967, a post he held for nineteen years, helping to bring players such as Ray Clemence, Alan Hansen, Steve Heighway, Phil Neal and Ian Rush to the club. He died aged 74 in February 2004. 1969 - Steve Staunton was born in Drogheda. He arrived from Dundalk for £20,000 in September 1986, netting seven times in 148 reds appearances across his two spells at Anfield, helping us to our last League title in 1990, and the FA Cup a year earlier. 1913 – Irish reserves centre-half Matt O’Mahoney was born in Mullinavat, County Kilkenny. He was on our books in 1933 but failed to break through to the first team. Milly off 2019 – James Milner was dismissed late on as we came from behind to beat Crystal Palace 4-3 at Anfield as Andros Townsend handed the Eagles a half-time lead. Mohamed Salah bagged a brace, with Roberto Firmino also on target and James Tomkins heading in for the visitors. Sadio Mané scored in injury time before Max Meyer bagged a final consolation. Rafael Camacho came off the bench for his second and final reds appearance. God’s despair 1994 - Robbie Fowler broke his ankle as we drew 1-1 in our rearranged FA Cup Third Round tie at Bristol City, and we lost the Anfield replay six days later. Ian Rush netted our goal at Ashton Gate. Jack’s treble 1907 - Jack Parkinson scored a hat-trick at Sunderland, with Sam Raybould and Jack Cox also on the scoresheet for the reds. Sunderland came back from 4-1 down at half-time to draw the game 5-5 as Arthur Hurdman nabbed a brace, with George Bridgett scoring one of his five goals past us. The reds felt hard done by as the referee, a last-minute replacement when the original official was caught up in fog on the way to the match, awarded the home side two penalties, both converted by Ernie Rhodes, one of which was a controversial award. Derby disappointment 2009 – Steven Gerrard skippered the club for the 250th time as we were held to a 1-1 League draw at Anfield by Everton, netting a 25-yard strike before Tim Cahill headed in a late equaliser from a free-kick, one of his five goals against the reds. We had previously been denied a clear penalty for a Phil Jagielka foul on Fernando Torres in the box. 1901 – The Blues left Anfield with a 2-1 victory, with Jack Cox netting our goal. Despite this we went on to claim our first League title. Jack Taylor netted two of his five goals against the reds. New contract for Sami 2002 - Sami Hyypiä signed a new contract to tie him to the reds until 2005. He signed two further extensions and made 464 reds appearances in total, netting 35 times and helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two League Cups and two UEFA Super Cups following his £2.5m bargain capture from Dutch side Willem II in May 1999. He left the club in the summer of 2009 to sign for Bayer 04 Leverkusen on a free transfer. Thumping the Canaries 1985 - Goals from John Wark, Kenny Dalglish and an Ian Rush brace sent Norwich City to a 4-0 defeat at Anfield. City went on to be relegated that season. Neil on the move 2006 - Neil Mellor joined Wigan Athletic on loan after six goals in 22 reds games. He struck in the last minutes of his debut to hand the Latics a 3-2 victory at Middlesbrough, failing to score again as he played another four times. Stalemate at Anfield 1955 – Bury faced Stoke City at Anfield in an FA Cup Third Round Third Replay that ended 2-2. The game was staged at 2pm on a Wednesday, just two days after the previous replay at Goodison Park. The Potters eventually won a fifth meeting 3-2, with all of the encounters going to extra time, and the final winner coming in the 120th minute! Also on the move 1926 – Future reds outside-right Danny McRorie signed for Airdrieonians. He struck five times in eight League games before moving on to Stenhousemuir in July 1927. 1951 – Outside-right Billy Watkinson was sold to Accrington Stanley for £3,000. He had signed from Prescot Cables in February 1946, netting twice in 42 appearances. 1996 - Nigel Clough left Anfield for Manchester City for £1.5m, only two and a half years after he had joined from Nottingham Forest for £2.275m. He had netted nine times in 44 reds games. 2009 - Craig Bellamy joined Manchester City from West Ham United for a reported £14m after nine strikes in 26 outings for the Hammers. 2016 – Ex-reds midfielder Jermaine Pennant signed for Tampines Rovers in Singapore, netting five times in 34 games. 2017 – Pennant signed for Bury, playing seven times before moving on again at the end of the campaign. 2020 – Swedish winger Kristoffer Peterson re-joined Utrecht on loan from Tranmere Rovers, striking twice in eight games in this second spell. 2021 – Ex-reds centre-half Conor Masterson joined Swindon Town on loan from Queens Park Rangers, turning out five times for the Robins. On the same day, forward Max Woltman signed pro terms with the reds. He made his senior bow in our UEFA Champions League group game defeat of AC Milan at the San Siro in December 2021. 2023 – Forward David Amoo joined Crewe Alexandra from Stevenage on a free transfer, failing to score in seven outings before being released at the end of the season. Other reds games 2002 – Southampton held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield with Michael Owen putting us in front before Kevin Davies grabbed one of his four goals past us. 1991 – John Barnes netted as Wimbledon left L4 with a 1-1 draw, with Warren Barton converting a late free kick as Jimmy Carter got a rare start for the reds due to injuries. 1980 – Paul Dyson headed in the only goal of our visit to Coventry City early on, as a nineteen-game unbeaten run in all competitions came to an end. 1952 – We lost 3-0 to Sunderland at Roker Park as Len Shackleton bagged two of his five goals past us before Dickie Davis scored the last of his seven. 1935 – We won 2-1 at Portsmouth, despite falling behind early on to one of Fred Worrall’s four strike against the reds. Souey’s debut 1978 - Graeme Souness made his reds bow as a David Johnson goal gave us victory at West Bromwich Albion. 1933 - We also travelled to the Baggies, losing 2-0 in our FA Cup Third Round tie. Billy Richardson bagged one of his nine goals against the reds, with Stan Wood netting the first of his five past us. Heading to Wembley 1981 – Ray Kennedy netted the only goal of the first leg of our League Cup Semi-final after a contested free-kick late on at a wet and windy Maine Road, with Manchester City’s Kevin Reeves earlier having a strike ruled out for an apparent handball. We drew the return to reach our second Final in the competition. In comes Redders 1991 - Jamie Redknapp signed from Bournemouth for £350,000, going on to strike 41 times in 308 first-team appearances. Although he only won one winners’ medal in his time at Anfield, the Coca Cola Cup in 1995, he was a popular member of the squad, and was club captain during the historic treble season eight years ago, going up to lift the FA Cup at the Millennium Stadium with Robbie Fowler. He moved on to Tottenham Hotspur in a free transfer in April 2002, retiring from football in the summer of 2005 after a brief spell at Southampton. Beating Spurs 2006 - Harry Kewell volleyed the only goal of the game as Tottenham Hotspur left Anfield with their customary defeat. Paul Stalteri was sent off for the visitors, while Stephen Warnock was completing his half century of reds games. The crowd of 44,983 was the largest to date since Anfield became an all-seater stadium. Another debutant 1967 - Ian Ross debuted as a substitute for the injured Ian Callaghan in our 1-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday, after Peter Thompson had scored the only goal of the game. 1989 - We also visited Hillsborough, coming from 2-0 down to draw, with Steve Nicol and John Aldridge getting on the scoresheet within a minute of each other. Hatters fail to show 1987 - Our FA Cup Third Round replay with Luton Town at Anfield was postponed after the Hatters failed to turn up on time! Although the country was suffering with bad weather, the Anfield pitch was deemed playable and Luton were informed that the match was definitely going ahead. However, they did not allow enough time to make the journey and so the game had to be called off, despite many of their fans managing to arrive. Things got even worse for Mark Lawrenson, who crashed his car driving home from Anfield after skidding on black ice. The game was eventually staged two weeks later, ending goalless after a full two hours, but we lost the second replay 3-0 at Kenilworth Road. Ton up in the cup 1911 – Sam Bowyer’s second goal was our hundredth in the FA Cup as we beat Gainsborough Trinity 3-2 in a First Round tie at Anfield as right-back Alf West played his 141st and last reds game. Arthur Goddard added our third but, unfortunately, we were knocked out at Everton at the next hurdle. Most recently 2023 – We lost 3-0 at Brighton & Hove Albion, with all the goals coming after thee break. Solly March bagged a brace before Danny Welbeck completed the scoring. 2018 – We beat Manchester City in a seven-goal thriller at Anfield, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain handing us an early lead. Leroy Sané equalised before the break with one of his four goals past us to date, but Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah all struck during the second half as we led 4-1 with less than ten minutes remaining. Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gündogan then netted to ensure a nervy finish as we inflicted City’s first League defeat of the season on them. This was the first of the latter’s four strikes against us. 2012 – We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Stoke City. Dick dies 1933 – Centre-forward Dick Johnson died. He joined the reds in January 1920, striking thirty times in 82 outings, including two hat-tricks, helping us to the League title in 1923 before leaving for Stoke in February 1925. He was noted for his overhead bicycle kicks. Management moves 1969 – Former reds skipper Sir Matt Busby announced that he would resign as Manchester United boss at the end of the season, which he did in June of that year after leading our deadly rivals to the European Cup, five League titles, two FA Cups and three FA Charity Shields. 1998 - Kenny Dalglish was appointed Manager of Newcastle United. He led the Toon to thirteenth place in his one full season in charge but was sacked just two unbeaten games into the following season. 2004 - Roy Hodgson was sacked as Manager of United Arab Emirates, having been in charge since April 2002. 2013 – Short-lived Assistant Manager Sean O’Driscoll was appointed Bristol City boss. He was sacked ten months later, having failed to keep them in the Championship followed by a poor start to the following campaign. On the same day, midfielder Liam Coyle left Anfield to sign for Accrington Stanley on a free transfer, netting once in 22 appearances in his first season with Accy. 1991 - Future reserves forward Lee Jones signed for Wrexham as a professional. He bagged thirteen goals in 49 games in his first period with the Dragons. On the same day, midfielder Leighton Clarkson signed a new contract, having already featured for the first-team twice. In comes David 2008 – Forward David N’Gog signed from Paris Saint-Germain for £1.5m. He struck nineteen times in 94 reds outings, although he only started on 41 of those occasions. He was sold to Bolton Wanderers for £4m in August 2011. Treble debutants 1999 - Dietmar Hamann, Sami Hyypiä and goalscorer Vladimír Šmicer all played their first reds games as we beat Feyenoord 2-0 to claim the Carlsberg Belfast Challenge trophy. The other goal came from Titi Camara, with his second reds strike. Happy birthday Harry 1870 - Keeper Harry Storer was born in Butterley, Derbyshire. He signed from Woolwich Arsenal for £75 in December 1895, taking over from the versatile Matt McQueen between our sticks. He made a total of 121 reds appearances before retiring in 1901. Unfortunately, he died in April 1908 aged just 37. Justice denied 2000 - The jury in the Hillsborough disaster trial was discharged after failing to reach a verdict on manslaughter charges against retired Chief Superintendent David Duckenfield, the police officer in charge on the day. The jury spent 25 hours deliberating the charges, but were unable to come to an agreement. The judge eventually ruled against a retrial. Reds in the Far East 2015 – Midfielder Pedro Chirivella, centre-back Daniel Cleary and winger Sheyi Ojo all made their first senior appearances as we were held to a 1-1 draw by a Malaysia XI in Kuala Lumpur. Jordon Ibe was on target for the reds. 2007 - We beat South China Athletic Association 3-1 in Hong Kong in the Semi-final of the Barclays Asia Trophy. John Arne Riise and Daniel Agger were on target, with Xabi Alonso converting a penalty. 2003 - Patrice Luzi and Zak Whitbread both made their senior reds debuts as we beat the Thailand national side 3-1 in the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok. Emile Heskey added to a Vladimír Šmicer brace in a game billed as a GSM Advance Nokia Exclusive Match. Reds in Australia 2013 – We played our first ever game in Australia with more than 95,000 fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground to see Steven Gerrard and Iago Aspas net in a 2-0 defeat of Melbourne Victory. More reds starting out 2019 – Dutch centre-half Sepp van den Berg featured for the first team for the first time as we drew 2-2 with Sporting Clube de Portugal to share the Western Union Cup in the Yankee Stadium in New York. Future Red Devil Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring, but Divock Origi and Gini Wijnaldum both netted to hand us a half-time lead, but Wendel levelled matters after the break. 2010 - Milan Jovanović played his first reds game as we lost 1-0 at 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the Fritz-Walter-Stadion. Charnock impresses 1996 - Midfielder Phil Charnock scored the only goal of the game as we beat Crewe Alexandra in a pre-season friendly at Gresty Road. He was to join the Alex on a free transfer just five months later. 1998 - The reds kicked off another pre-season campaign at Crewe, with both Sean Dundee and Vegard Heggem making their reds bows. We won 3-0, with goals from Danny Murphy, Dominic Matteo and Bjørn Tore Kvarme coming in a three-minute flurry. Czech mates 2001 - It was confirmed that the reds were about to secure the signature of young Czech striking sensation Milan Baroš from Baník Ostrava. The deal was finally completed in December of that year. 2002 – The reds announced that Vladimír Šmicer had agreed an extension to his contract that would keep him at Anfield until 2005. He then left the club to join Girondins de Bordeaux, although he returned to his homeland with SK Slavia Praha in July 2007. Famous Emlyn 2008 - It was announced that Emlyn Hughes was to be inducted into the National Football Museum’s Hall of Fame later in the year, joining the other former reds players John Barnes, Peter Beardsley, Kenny Dalglish, Alan Hansen, Roger Hunt, Kevin Keegan, Ian Rush and Graeme Souness who had already been included. Youngsters battling for the final 2007 - Future reds Mikel San José and Damien Plessis faced each other in the Semi-final of the Under-19 European Championships in Austria. The game ended goalless even after extra time, with Spain eventually beating France 4-2 on penalties, with both of our boys converting their spot-kicks. On the move 2021 – Harry Wilson was sold to Fulham for a reported £12m after a successful loan spell. He made his reds bow in January 2017 in our FA Cup Third Round replay win at Plymouth Argyle, but only made one further first-team appearance. 2018 – Keeper Shamal George joined Tranmere Rovers on loan, only making three senior appearances during the season. Brian’s farewell 2015 – The funeral of Brian Hall took place at St Lawrence’s Church in Longridge, Lancashire. He signed for the reds in July 1968 fresh from graduating university, and scored 21 goals in 224 games, helping us to claim a League title, UEFA Cup, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield. His most memorable moment came when he bagged his first reds goal, the FA Cup Semi-final winner against Everton at Old Trafford in March 1971, also scoring at the same stage against Leicester City three years later. He moved on to Plymouth Argyle in July 1976, later finishing his playing career with Burnley, but he returned to Anfield in 1991 to take up the post of Public Relations Manager, a position he held until retiring in 2012.
