Birth of a reds great 1919 - Bob Paisley was born in Hetton-le-Hole in County Durham. He made 277 reds appearances, netting twelve times and helping us to the League title in 1947 before joining the coaching staff in 1954. He took over as Manager twenty years later and remains the most successful English boss of all time, leading us to three European Cups, six League titles, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, four League Cups and five FA Charity Shields. Happy birthdays 1986 – Spanish left-back José Enrique was born in Valencia. He signed from Newcastle United for £5.5m in August 2011, notching twice in 99 reds appearances before being released in May 2016. He moved on to Real Zaragoza four months later. 1983 – Pepijn Lijnders was born in Broekhuizen in the Netherlands. He joined the reds as First-team Development Coach in 2014, leaving the club in January 2018 to take over as N.E.C. boss. However, he was sacked just four months later, returning to Melwood in June 2018 as Assistant Manager. 1883 – Keeper Peter Platt was born in Rishton. He signed from Blackburn Rovers in May 1902, playing 44 times before moving on to Luton Town in 1904. He sadly died aged just 39 in a mini-flu epidemic in Nuneaton in January 1922. Four for Harold 1932 - Centre-forward Harold Barton scored all four reds goals as we beat Chesterfield 4-2 at their Recreation Ground in a Fourth Round FA Cup tie. Unfortunately, we were knocked out by Chelsea in the Sixth Round that season. Beating the Blues 1937 - We won the Anfield derby 3-2 with Fred Howe, Phil Taylor and Jack Balmer on target, and Alex Stevenson bagging a brace for the Blues. Most recently 2022 – We won 3-1 at Crystal Palace with Virgil van Dijk and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on target before the break, with Fabinho converting a late spot kick. 2020 – We won 2-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, extending our lead at the top of the table to sixteen points with a game in hand. Jordan Henderson headed us in front early on, but Raúl Jiménez equalised after the break as we conceded our first League goal for more than twelve hours. Roberto Firmino struck the winner. Cup wins We have twice won FA Cup Fourth Round ties 3-0 on this day in history. 1971 - John Toshack, Ian St. John and Chris Lawler netted as we beat Swansea City at Anfield on our way to the Final. This was the Saint’s 425th and final game for the club. 1982 - We won at Sunderland with Kenny Dalglish grabbing a brace and Ian Rush also on the scoresheet. Unfortunately, we lost at Chelsea at the very next hurdle. Tons up 1954 – Centre-half Laurie Hughes played his 200th reds game as Tottenham Hotspur held us to a 2-2 top-flight draw at Anfield. Billy Liddell and John Evans scored with full-back Frank Lock putting through his own net and Sonny Walters nabbing the last of his four strikes past us. 1915 – We lost 2-1 to The Wednesday at Hillsborough with left-back Bob Pursell reaching a century of reds games. Fred Pagnam scored our goal, while David McLean struck one of his eight goals past us with Sam Kirkman bagging the last of his four. A crazy win 2016 – We won by the odd goal in nine at Norwich City, thanks to a stoppage-time Adam Lallana winner that led to a mass celebration on the touchline with boss Jürgen Klopp having his glasses broken. Roberto Firmino put us in front, but we found ourselves 3-1 down. We completed a turnaround to lead 4-3 thanks to goals from Jordan Henderson, a second from Firmino and James Milner. We were still ahead at the ninety-minute mark but Sébastien Bassong bagged a late leveller before the final dénouement. Off the mark 1904 – Forward John Carlin struck the first of his eight reds goals as we drew 2-2 at West Bromwich Albion, with half-back John ‘Geezer’ Hughes also on target with his second and last strike for the club. Carra going free 2006 - Jamie Carragher was awarded the Freedom of Sefton, an honour that thrilled the Bootle-born defender, which he won for his local charity work and the good example he sets young people. He became only the second person to be handed such an accolade. Other births and deaths 2013 – Right-winger Jimmy Payne died. He notched 43 times in 243 appearances for the reds, including the 1950 FA Cup Final, before moving across Stanley Park in April 1956, where he was dogged by injury before retiring to become a newsagent. 1911 – Inside-right Jock Smith committed suicide two days after the death of one of his children. He signed from Sunderland in May 1892, bagging five goals in eleven outings, moving on to The Wednesday in August 1893. 1907 – Scottish inside-forward Willie Walker died in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. He joined the reds from Leith Athletic in May 1897, netting three times in twelve reds games before he returned to his former club for free in August 1898. 1868 – Forward Fred Geary was born in Hyson Green, Nottingham. He signed from Everton for £60 in May 1895, having top scored as they won the League in 1891 and won three England caps. He bagged fourteen goals in 45 reds games, helping us to claim the Second Division title in his first season. 1904 - Left-half Jimmy McDougall was born in Port Glasgow. He signed from Partick Thistle in April 1928 and went on to be nominated into the club’s official Hall of Fame for the 1930’s, having struck twelve times in 356 games for the reds. He moved on to South Liverpool in May 1938 and later set up a successful chandlery business in Liverpool. 1961 – Former Academy Technical Manager Pep Segura was born in A Coruña, Spain. He joined the reds in June 2009 having led Olympiacos to the League and Cup double, moving on in September 2012. 1974 - One-time winger Bernard Diomède was born in Saint-Doulchard, France. He only made five first-team appearances after signing from Auxerre for £3m in June 2000. Stéph’s debut 1993 - Future red Stéphane Henchoz made his full international debut as Roy Hodgson’s Switzerland drew 1-1 with Japan B in a Carlsberg Cup game in Hong Kong, going on to win 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out. Bad boys 2006 - Abel Xavier was sacked by Middlesbrough after being found guilty of breaching UEFA’s anti-doping regulations. He served a ban and subsequently returned to the Riverside, playing 27 times for Boro in total. 2005 – Future red Daniel Agger was sent off for Denmark Under-21’s in an unofficial international against a Panama ‘A’ side, with the game ending 2-2. Four for Milan again 2003 - Milan Baroš scored four for the reserves as they trounced Bradford City 5-0 at the Deva Stadium in Chester. This was the second time that he had knocked four past the Bantams, following a similar performance the previous August. Dietmar Hamann made his comeback from injury in the same game. On the move 2021 – Midfielder Kevin Stewart signed for Blackpool, playing sixteen times in his first campaign with the Tangerines. 2020 – Victor Moses joined Internazionale on loan from Chelsea, failing to score in twenty games in Italy. 2019 – Ex-reds forward Mario Balotelli signed for Olympique de Marseille, scoring eight times in fifteen games for the French side. On the same day, full-back Ryan McLaughlin joined Rochdale from Blackpool, after eleven games for the Seasiders. Meanwhile, full-back Calum Woods joined Bradford City on a free transfer from Preston North End. 2018 – Forward David N’Gog signed for Ross County, netting once in ten outings. On the same day, left-winger Albert Riera announced his retirement from playing. 2017 – Winger Lazar Marković joined Hull City on loan, scoring twice in fourteen outings. 2009 - Emile Heskey joined Aston Villa from Wigan Athletic for £3.5m, after sixteen goals in 88 outings for the Latics. 2007 - Dominic Matteo joined Stoke City on a free transfer from Blackburn Rovers. He struck once in 25 outings for the Potters, often operating as a midfielder. 2003 - Charlie Adam signed for Rangers. He struck eighteen times in 86 games before moving to Blackpool in August 2009 for a club record £500,000, after several loan spells away from Ibrox. 2002 - Reserves defender Alan Navarro was sold to Tranmere Rovers for £225,000, playing 48 times before joining Accrington Stanley in September 2005. 1996 - Reserves forward Lee Jones re-joined Wrexham on loan. He struck nine times in 26 games while on loan at the Racecourse Ground. Reds skippers 2008 - Ex-red El-Hadji Diouf captained Senegal as they drew 2-2 with Tunisia in an Africa Cup of Nations group game in Ghana. 2006 – Diouf also featured as Senegal beat Zimbabwe 2-0 in a group game in Egypt. 2009 – Emiliano Insúa skippered Argentina as they beat Peru 2-1 in a Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventud de América” group game in Venezuela. 2013 – Oussama Assaidi featured for Morocco as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Cape Verde in their Africa Cup of Nations Finals group game in South Africa. 2015 – Ex-red Carl Medjani played for Algeria as they lost 1-0 to Ghana in another group game in Equatorial Guinea. Future red Sadio Mané also featured that day as Senegal drew 1-1 with South Africa. 2012 – Future red Assaidi played as Morocco lost 2-1 to Tunisia in Gabon. 2000 – Future red Fábio Aurélio played for Brazil as they beat Ecuador 2-0 in an Olympics qualifier. On the same day, Alberto Aquilani featured as Italy Under-15’s lost 3-1 to Brazil. 2016 – Future red Ozan Kabak played for Turkey Under-16’s in their 3-1 friendly defeat of the USA. Other reds games 1988 – Peter Beardsley and John Barnes scored as we beat Charlton Athletic 2-0 at Selhurst Park 1960 – We drew a Second Division fixture 3-3 at Middlesbrough, with Brian Clough nabbing two of his ten goals past us. Kenny Thomson put through his own net with Dave Hickson and Roger Hunt also on target to hand us a 3-1 half-time lead. Bill Harris equalised through a late spot-kick. 1926 – We beat Arsenal 3-0 at Anfield with Dick Forshaw netting twice and Cyril Oxley also scoring, while Elisha Scott saved an Alf Baker penalty. Forshaw’s second came with just fifteen seconds left, with the referee momentarily dazed so Tom Bromilow blew the final whistle! 1909 – Joe Hewitt and Ronald Orr struck as we won 2-0 at Bradford City. Bruno le père 2007 – Ex-reds midfielder Bruno Cheyrou and his wife Constance welcomed a son, Nino, in France. On the same day, Shane O’Connor played for the Irish Under-17’s, while future red Lucas captained Brazil as they beat Uruguay 3-1 in a Sudamericano Sub-20 "Juventud de América" game in Paraguay. -
Another Rushie treble 1984 - Ian Rush scored a hat-trick past the young Nigel Spink on a frozen Villa Park pitch, as we came from behind to win 3-1 in a live Friday night BBC game, in front of 19,566 hardy fans. Scouser Dennis Mortimer struck the Villains’ consolation. 1934 - We also visited Villa Park, when right-back Bob Done bagged his thirteenth and final reds goal with Syd Roberts also on target as we lost 3-2. Tom Waring struck two of his six goals against the reds, with Ronnie Dix nabbing the first of his four past us. Birth and death 1994 - Former reds right-half Sir Matt Busby died. He, of course, went on to far greater fame down the East Lancs Road, but in his time at Anfield he captained the reds, and struck three times in 122 first-team appearances before the Second World War, as well as another goal in 26 wartime outings. 1869 – Scottish left-back Duncan McLean was born in Renton. He made his reds bow in our very first game having remained when Everton departed Anfield. He bagged four goals in 82 games, helping us to the Second Division title before returning north of the border to join Edinburgh St. Bernard’s in October 1895, with whom he won two full international caps. Champions defeated 2007 - We beat Chelsea convincingly, 2-0, thanks to an early Dirk Kuyt strike and Jermaine Pennant’s first reds goal. This secured Rafael Benítez’s 56th win in his hundredth League game in charge, so equalling Bill Shankly’s record. This was also Jose Mourinho’s hundredth League match as Chelsea boss. Later that day, celebrated reds fan Dr. Fun, whose real name was Lenny Campbell, sadly died in hospital aged 63, following a bout of cancer. 2015 – We were held to a 1-1 draw by the Blues in the first leg of our League Cup Semi-final at Anfield. Eden Hazard opened the scoring from the spot, one of his seven goals past us to date, with Raheem Sterling netting a second-half equaliser. A great start from Sam 1900 - Sam Raybould scored after thirty seconds, but we were eventually beaten 3-1 in the Goodison derby, as the Blues completed a League double. This was his first reds goal, while Jimmy Settle netted two of his eleven goals against the reds as Joe Blythe also scored. Red centurions 2010 – Lucas Leiva played his hundredth reds game as we beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at Anfield, with a fans’ guard of honour greeting the team coach on its way into Anfield. Dirk Kuyt scored a twice-taken penalty in the final minute, having opened the scoring early on. 1962 – Roger Hunt reached a century of games for the club in our 1-1 Second Division draw at Sc***horpe United, when Ian St. John netted our goal. Youngest in the cup 2016 - Sheyi Ojo became our youngest ever FA Cup goalscorer in our 3-0 Third Round replay win at Exeter City, aged 18 years and 215 days, with both he and midfielder João Teixeira bagging their only reds goals. Left-back José Enrique skippered the side for the only time while playing centre-half, with Joe Allen having opened the scoring. Two-ton Andy 2022 – Andy Robertson played his 200th game for the reds as we won the second leg of our League Cup Semi-final 2-0 at Arsenal to reach the Final thanks to a Diogo Jota brace. Right-back Neco Williams featured for the 33rd and last time, with Thomas Partey sent off for the home side in the final minute. Marching on together 1996 - Gary Kelly was sent off for Leeds United for bringing down Rob Jones in the area with the score 1-0 at Anfield. Robbie Fowler converted the resulting spot-kick, the first penalty we had been awarded in 41 matches. We eventually romped home 5-0, our equal record victory over the Whites. Robbie Fowler scored a second with Neil Ruddock also bagging a brace and Stan Collymore also on target. Failure at last 1973 - John Toshack struck as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Derby County at Anfield, after Roger Davies had bagged the first of his five goals against the reds. This ended a run of 21 consecutive home League wins, still a top-flight record. This was Tosh’s final goal of the season in all competitions, although he still finished as our joint top scorer in the League with thirteen strikes. Steve Heighway played his hundredth League game for the reds. More derby despair We have lost both the Anfield derbies played on this day in history. 1912 - Sam Gilligan struck as we went down 3-1. Tommy Browell scored the first of his seven goals past us, with Frank Jefferies and George Beare also on target. 1951 - We were beaten 2-0 as Jimmy McIntosh bagged his only two derby goals, although he had previously scored for times past us with Blackpool. Forward Don Woan played his second and final reds game. Michael on target 1998 - Michael Owen struck the only goal of the game as we beat Newcastle United at Anfield in game that was postponed from the previous August, following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. Signing on 1909 – Full-back Bob Crawford signed from Arthurlie. He played 115 times for the reds, netting once in a career badly interrupted by injury. 1926 – Outside-right Dick Edmed signed from Gillingham for £1,800. He scored 46 times in 170 reds games before joining Bolton Wanderers in May 1932. He died on his eightieth birthday. 2006 - John Arne Riise signed a new contract to tie him to the club until 2009. He made 348 first-team appearances in total, notching 31 times. In his time with the club, he helped us to claim the European Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and two FA Charity Shields before moving to Roma for £4m in June 2008. A new breeding ground 1999 - The new Academy was officially opened in Kirkby, seven miles from Anfield. On the same day, future red Nicolas Anelka played for France as they beat Morocco 1-0 in a friendly in Marseille. Stevie honoured 2013 - Steven Gerrard was presented with the Football Writers’ Association Tribute Award at the Savoy Hotel in London. He followed Bob Paisley in 1984 and Kenny Dalglish in 1987 as the club’s only winners of this trophy. Raw Venison 1982 - Barry Venison signed as a professional for Sunderland. He played more than two hundred games for the Wearsiders, including the 1985 Milk Cup Final, before moving to Anfield for £200,000 in July 1986. All wrong for Wright 1990 – Crystal Palace’s Ian Wright broke his leg as we won 2-0 at Selhurst Park. Ian Rush and Peter Beardsley both netted as we completed a League double over the Eagles after our 9-0 triumph the previous September. In African action 2022 – Ex-reds loanee Steven Caulker played for Sierra Leone as they lost 1-0 to Equatorial Guinea in an Africa Cup of Nations group game in Cameroon. 2015 – Kolo Touré played as Ivory Coast drew 1-1 with future red Naby Keïta’s Guinea in group game in Equatorial Guinea. Future red Ibrahima Konaté played for France Under-16’s as they thumped the Czech Republic 6-0 in a tournament game. 2013 – Ex-red Momo Sissoko featured in another group game as Mali beat Niger 1-0 in South Africa. 2002 – Ex-red Rigobert Song captained Cameroon in their 1-0 defeat of DR Congo in Mali. On the same day, future reds Salif Diao and El-Hadji Diouf both played in Senegal’s 1-0 defeat of Egypt in another group game. 2001 – Future red Touré appeared in a qualifier as Ivory Coast beat Sudan 2-0 in Bouaké. Other reds games 2001 – Middlesbrough held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. 1968 – Geoff Strong and Ron Yeats both scored with their head as we beat Southampton 2-0 in L4. 1923 – We beat Boro 2-0 at Ayresome Park, with Harry Chambers and Dick Johnson on the scoresheet. 1906 – We defeated Sunderland 2-0 in a First Division match at Anfield, thanks to goals from Joe Hewitt and John Carlin, in a game that also acted as a benefit game for right-half Maurice Parry. Also on the move 2023 – Young defender Jarell Quansah joined Bristol Rovers on loan, making sixteen senior appearances while with the Pirates. On the same day, Danny Ings joined West Ham United from Aston Villa for an initial £12m, having struck fourteen times in 52 outings since arriving from Southampton for a £25m fee in August 2021. 2017 – Forward Michael Ngoo joined Oldham Athletic from Bromley on a free transfer. 2014 – Young Portuguese centre-half Tiago Ilori joined Granada in Spain on loan, playing nine games there. 2011 – Ex-reserves winger Adam Hammill joined Wolverhampton Wanderers from Barnsley for £500,000. He scored once in 27 games before moving to Huddersfield Town in June 2013 after a successful loan spell there. 2005 - Sotirios Kyrgiakos joined Rangers from Panathinaikos for £1.75m. He struck five times in 57 outings while in Scotland, helping them to claim the League title and League Cup, bagging a brace in their Final defeat of Motherwell later that year. He was released in May 2006. 1995 - Steve Nicol joined Notts County as a Player/Coach on a free transfer. He made 37 appearances for the Magpies before moving on to Sheffield Wednesday after County were relegated. 1998 - Ex-reserves defender Barry Jones joined York City from Wrexham for £40,000. He made 134 League appearances before joining Southport in 2001. Also in international action 2000 – Future red Alberto Aquilani played for Italy Under-15’s in their 3-1 defeat by Japan. 2009 – Ronald Huth featured for Paraguay in the Sudamericano Sub-20 "Juventud de América" as they drew 1-1 with Brazil in Venezuela. 2017 – Midfielder Allan played in the South American Championships for Brazil Under-20’s as they drew 0-0 with Chile in Ecuador. 2018 – Rigobert Song took charge of Cameroon as they lost an African Nations Championship group game 1-0 to Angola in Morocco. 2019 – Future red Darwin Núñez featured as Uruguay Under-20’s beat Ecuador 3-1 in the South American Championships in Chile. -
Taylor out 1959 - Phil Taylor resigned as Manager, paving the way for the arrival of Bill Shankly the following month. He had made 345 appearances as right-half before and after the war, netting 34 times and winning one League title, and captaining the side. He joined the coaching staff when he retired from playing in 1954, and became Manager two years later, staying in the job for three years. However, he has the unhappy distinction of being the only reds boss never to manage the side in the top flight. He said, “The strain of it all has made me very tired at times and I decided, great as is my love for Liverpool, to resign.” He led us to 76 victories in his 150 games in charge. Smiley happy birthday 1896 - Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers was born in Willington Quay, Northumberland. He signed on in April 1915 and struck 151 times in 339 reds games, helping us to back-to-back League titles in the early 1920’s. He was transferred to West Bromwich Albion in March 1928. Sammy’s goalscoring debut 1982 - Sammy Lee scored on his England debut in a 3-0 European Championships qualifying win in Greece. Phil Thompson was making his 42nd and final international appearance, while fellow clubmate Phil Neal also played. Alan Hansen, Mark Lawrenson, Graeme Souness and future reds Michael Robinson and John Wark all also played in qualifiers that day. 1923 - Centre-half Billy McDevitt made his reds bow, the first of just four senior outings, as we shared a goalless draw with Aston Villa at Villa Park. Reds farewells 2004 - The funeral of reds legend Emlyn Hughes took place at Sheffield Cathedral. ‘Crazy Horse’ signed from Blackpool for a club record £65,000 in February 1967 and played 665 times in his twelve years at Anfield, netting 49 times and winning two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields. Dave Wright also scored with forward Harold Taylor netting his sixth and final goal. Red milestones 2001 - Dietmar Hamann played his hundredth reds game as we drew 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers. Michael Owen’s early headed goal was cancelled out in the second half by Matt Jansen as we extended our unbeaten League run to eight games that season. 1965 - We also faced Rovers, with Ian St. John bagging a brace in a 5-2 win as we topped the table for the first time that season, with Willie Stevenson scoring from the spot and Roger Hunt and Tommy Smith also on target. 1990 – Peter Beardsley bagged the club’s 5,000th goal in the top flight as we beat Coventry City 1-0 at Highfield Road. 1991 – Steve McMahon played his 200th League game for the reds as we were held to a goalless draw at West Ham United. First Anfield League derby 1894 - Everton paid their first League visit to Anfield as the away side. Inside-left Davy Hannah bagged his first reds goal, with Jimmy Ross converting a last-minute penalty as we drew 2-2. Thumping the Imps 1956 - Alan Arnell and Johnny Wheeler grabbed two goals apiece as we beat Lincoln City 4-0 in a Second Division encounter at Anfield. Mixed fortunes against the Owls 1945 - Jack Balmer netted a brace as we beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-2 in a Wartime League match at Hillsborough, with Billy Liddell also on the scoresheet. 1900 - We lost by the same score to The Wednesday at their old Owlerton ground in a top-flight meeting, with Alex Raisbeck and Sam Raybould on the scoresheet. Andrew Wilson netted the first two of his eight strikes against the reds, with Tommy Crawshaw also on target. Tosh exits the Bernabeu again 1999 - John Toshack was sacked as Manager of Real Madrid for the second time after nine months in charge, eleven games into the new season. His new £22m signing Nicolas Anelka had not yet set La Liga alight. International farewells 2010 - Jari Litmanen became Finland’s oldest over goalscorer, converting a penalty while winning his 137th and last cap in Finland’s 8-0 thumping of San Marino in a European Championships qualifier in Helsinki, with ex-red Daniel Sjölund also featuring. Fernando Torres won his final cap as a reds player as Spain were thumped 4-0 in a friendly in Portugal, with Raul Meireles and ex-reds Álvaro Arbeloa and Xabi Alonso also featuring. Ryan Babel played for the Netherlands for the last time as a red as they beat Turkey 1-0 in another friendly, with future red Nuri Şahin on the losing side. Kettle’s debut 1975 - Left-back Brian Kettle made his reds debut in our 6-0 UEFA Cup Second Round thumping of Real Sociedad, as we went through 9-1 on aggregate en route to our second triumph in the competition. David Fairclough struck his first reds goal in just his second game with Phil Neal also scoring for the first time as centre-half Max Thompson appeared for the second and last time. Ray Kennedy nabbed a brace with John Toshack and Steve Heighway also on the scoresheet, while Kevin Keegan blasted a penalty over the bar. Thumping the Mancs 2001 - A Michael Owen brace and a John Arne Riise belter gave us a 3-1 win over Manchester United in an 11:30 kick off, to record our third victory over them that year, and third straight League win for the first time since December 1979. David Beckham netted for the visitors. 1944 - We also hosted them in Wartime League match with Don Welsh netting twice, including a penalty, in a 3-2 victory, as we also benefited from a Roughton own goal. Spanish stalemate 2008 - We had to rely on a stoppage-time Steven Gerrard penalty to secure a 1-1 draw with Club Atlético de Madrid in our home UEFA Champions League group game. Future red Maxi Rodríguez had given the visitors the lead, with Fernando Torres again missing out against his former club due to injury. The spot-kick we were awarded was generous, but we had already been denied two much better shouts. Ex-red Luis García featured against us. Meanwhile, new Argentina boss Diego Maradona declared that he wanted Javier Mascherano to take over as captain of his country. 2014 – We lost 1-0 at Real Madrid in another group game with Karim Benzema on target, one of his four goals past us to date. This was our third consecutive defeat and third consecutive game without scoring in Europe, both joint club records. Players of the year 2006 - Sami Hyypiä was named Finland’s Player of the Year for the sixth time in eight years. 2003 - John Arne Riise was named the Norwegian PFA Player of the Year for the second year running. Four against 2000 - Mark Viduka scored four goals as Leeds United won a 4-3 thriller at Elland Road, the first of his six strikes against us. Christian Ziege scored his first reds goal, with Sami Hyypiä and Vladimír Šmicer also on target, while Patrik Berger suffered a serious knee injury. This was the first time an opposing player had notched four times against the reds since Jimmy Greaves for Tottenham Hotspur in April 1963. For King Billy 2004 - A plaque in honour of Billy Liddell was unveiled at Anfield. Off against the Russians again 1992 - Mike Marsh was sent off late on in Spartak Moskva’s 2-0 win at Anfield as we crashed out of the European Cup Winners’ Cup 6-2 on aggregate at the Second Round stage. This followed Bruce Grobbelaar’s dismissal in the first leg, and Paul Stewart’s in our preceding game to complete an unwelcome treble. A rare strike against 1978 - Forward John Hawley scored one of only four opposition goals in the League at Anfield that season, as Leeds United left with a point after using rough-house tactics to help secure a 1-1 draw. Terry McDermott was on target for the reds from the spot. Phil Neal had earlier struck a penalty against a post as we dropped points at home for the first time that season, in our seventh home fixture. An Anfield treble 1950 - Chilean forward George Robledo scored a hat-trick for Newcastle United as they won 4-2 at Anfield, the first of his five strikes against us, with Ernest Taylor netting one of his five goals past the reds. Our goals came from Jimmy Payne and a Billy Liddell penalty as keeper Cyril Sidlow played his 165th and last reds game. 1995 - We also lost at St. James’ Park, with Ian Rush grabbing our goal in a 2-1 defeat. Les Ferdinand bagged one of his six goals past us, with Steve Watson also scoring for the Geordies. 1893 - However, we thumped them 5-1 at Anfield when Patrick Gordon struck twice with Harry Bradshaw, Douglas Dick and Jimmy Stott all also on target in our Second Division meeting, the first time we had ever faced the Geordie outfit. These were the first reds strikes for both Bradshaw and Dick. Also in Europe 1970 - We moved into the Third Round of the Fairs Cup, holding Dinamo Bucureşti to a draw on their own patch to progress 4-1 on aggregate, with our equaliser coming from substitute Phil Boersma, the first of his thirty reds goals. 1981 - A thrilling night at Anfield ended in a 3-2 defeat of the previous season’s losing UEFA Cup Finalists AZ’67 Alkmaar, as we reached the Third Round of the European Cup 5-4 on aggregate. The Dutch champions equalised twice after a Terry McDermott penalty and an Ian Rush strike before Alan Hansen won it with five minutes to go. Alkmaar’s second equaliser came from a 25-yard shot from future Nottingham Forest star Johnny Metgod that bounced down from the crossbar and onto Phil Thompson’s foot for a bizarre own goal. Kees Kist scored in both legs for the Dutch side. 1997 - We beat Racing Club de Strasbourg 2-0 at Anfield thanks to a penalty from Robbie Fowler and a late goal from Karlheinz Riedle. This was our hundredth win in Europe, excluding those secured through penalty shoot-outs or coin tosses. However, this was not enough to overcome a three goal first-leg deficit as we went out of the UEFA Cup at the Second Round stage. A rare defeat 1989 - Coventry City won at Anfield for the first time, at the 23rd attempt, when Cyrille Regis struck the only goal of the game, the last of his four strikes past us. Elisha’s last 1933 - Elisha Scott won his 27th and last cap as a reds player as Northern Ireland were held to a 1-1 draw by Wales in the British International Championships in Belfast. He went on to win 31 in total, remaining the last red to achieve full international honours with the province until Ryan McLaughlin in May 2014. Facing the Trotters We have twice faced Bolton Wanderers in the Lancashire Senior Cup in the 1930’s, without tasting defeat. 1939 – We won a First Round tie 3-1 at Burnden Park, with Phil Taylor netting twice and Willie Fagan also on target. 1931 – We were held to a 1-1 Third Round draw at Anfield, with Jimmy Smith nabbing our goal. In and out 2002 - Young ex-reds midfielder Neil Prince was released by Torquay United, just three months after arriving at Plainmoor. He had made eight appearances for the Gulls, and then moved into non-League football. 2010 – Icelandic midfielder Victor Pálsson joined Dagenham & Redbridge on loan, for whom he played three times. He left Anfield to sign for Hibernian in January 2011. 2011 – Ex-reserves forward Krisztián Németh re-signed for MTK Hungária, scoring in his only League outing before joining Dutch side RKC Waalwijk two months later. On the same day, future red Tiago Ilori played for Portugal Under-19’s as they trounced the Faroe Islands 9-1 in a friendly. 2022 - Pako Ayestarán was appointed Assistant Head Coach of Aston Villa, working under Unai Emery. 1903 - Right-back Alf West signed from Barnsley St. Peter’s for £500. He struck six times in 141 reds games across two spells at Anfield. He helped us to the Second Division championship in 1905 and our second League title a year later, joining Reading in June 1909, becoming their club captain but he only stayed for a season before returning to Anfield in May 1910. He only played five times in this second spell before joining Notts County in July 1911. Other reds games 1972 – We beat Chelsea 3-1 at Anfield with Kevin Keegan adding to a John Toshack brace. 1933 – Sam English and Gordon Hodgson netted as we won 2-1 at Birmingham City. After the game, Chairman W.H. Cartwright went into the dressing room to inform English that he had just become the father of a baby daughter. 1905 – We beat Bury 3-1 in L4 with Bobby Robinson scoring twice and John Carlin also netting. 1899 – John Hunter and Tommy Robertson were on target as Sheffield United held us to a 2-1 draw at Anfield. Youngsters for England 2021 – Jayden Danns bagged a brace, his only goals for England Under-16’s, as they beat Belgium 3-2 in a friendly in France. 1964 - Future red David Wilson won his seventh and final cap for England Under-23’s as they beat Wales 3-2 in a friendly at the Racecourse Ground. Keepers on the move 2005 - Paul Harrison joined Wolverhampton Wanderers, having been released from Anfield at the end of the previous season. He never made their first team, soon moving on to Chester City. 2003 – Aussie custodian Brad Jones joined Blackpool on loan from Middlesbrough. He played seven times, returning for another spell a year later. 1983 - Future reds loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe joined Hartlepool United on loan from Sunderland. He turned out for them three times in the Fourth Division. -

All sitting comfortably 1994 - Neil Ruddock scored the first goal in front of the new all-seater Kop, as we beat Aston Villa 3-2, with Robbie Fowler bagging a brace. Other centenaries 1968 - Tommy Smith and Alan Ball, with one of his eleven goals against the reds, were on the scoresheet in the hundredth League derby as we drew 1-1 at Anfield. 1898 – Full-back Archie Goldie played his hundredth reds game as we lost 2-1 at Stoke, with Jack Cox on target. Carra’s record 1999 - Jamie Carragher equalled the record number of England Under-21’s caps, held by Gary Owen, as he won his 22nd cap, captaining them for the first time in their 4-1 friendly defeat of Denmark at Valley Parade. Substitute David Thompson scored, with fellow red Steven Gerrard also in the team. Carra went on to claim 27 in total, which was still an England record until he was overtaken by Scott Carson, and more recently by James Milner who eventually made 46 appearances. 1996 - David Thompson won his first cap at Under-21’s level as a substitute in England’s goalless draw with Poland at Molineux. Future red Emile Heskey was in the starting eleven. Bowing out 1955 - Billy Liddell won his 29th and final cap as Scotland beat Northern Ireland 2-1 at Windsor Park in Belfast. Future reds keeper Tommy Younger won his fifth cap in the same game. 2013 - Craig Bellamy announced his retirement from international football after nineteen strikes in 78 games for Wales. Off the mark 1921 - Harry Beadles struck the first of his six reds goals as we drew 1-1 at Preston North End in a top-flight encounter. Right-half Francis Checkland played his fifth and final reds game that day, with Preston’s late equaliser coming from the spot from future red Archie Rawlings. 1949 – Full-back Ray Lambert bagged the first of his two reds goals, scoring from the spot in our 2-0 defeat of Middlesbrough at Anfield, with Jimmy Payne also netting. Jimmy’s treble 1930 – Jimmy Smith scored a hat-trick as we thumped Everton 5-0 in a Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round tie at Anfield, with Gordon Hodgson and Tom Bradshaw also scoring. Most recently 2022 – We lost 3-2 at Arsenal with Gabriel Martinelli opening the scoring with one of his four goals past us to date. Darwin Núñez equalised, but Bukayo Saka put the Gunners ahead again in first-half stoppage time. Roberto Firmino levelled after the break, but Saka converted a penalty to secure victory. International debuts 2009 – Future red Dejan Lovren came off the bench to make his debut in Croatia’s 3-2 friendly defeat of Qatar in Rijeka. 1997 - Bjørn Tore Kvarme won his only senior international cap as Norway were held to a goalless friendly draw in Oslo by Colombia. Clubmate Stig Inge Bjørnebye also played, with future red Milan Baroš in action for the Czech Republic Under-16’s on the same day. 1995 - Brad Friedel won his first cap as a Galatasaray player as the USA beat Saudi Arabia by the odd goal in seven in a friendly in Washington DC. Djibril Cissé struck as France drew 1-1 in future red Philip Degen’s Switzerland, with ex-red El-Hadji Diouf on target as Senegal beat a Mali side that included Djimi Traoré 3-0 in Dakar. 2004 – Darren Potter and future reds Daniel Agger, Alberto Aquilani, Ramon Calliste, Scott Carson, Stewart Downing, Glen Johnson, Gary O’Neil and Jermaine Pennant all played in European Championships qualifiers at Under-21’s level, with future red James Milner netting his first goal at this level. 2007 - Péter Gulácsi and Krisztián Németh both played for Hungary Under-19’s as they trounced Kazakhstan 6-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Szekesfehervar, with Németh winning his first cap at this level as a red. 2011 – Gulácsi skippered Hungary Under-21’s in their 2-1 European Championships qualifying defeat in Turkey. Joe honoured 2012 – Reds midfielder Joe Allen was named Player of the Year and Club Player of the Year for 2011/12 at the FAW Awards, based on his time with Swansea City and the national side. Jimmy’s death 1908 – Forward Jimmy Stott died in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He signed from Middlesbrough in August 1893, netting fourteen times in seventeen games as we won the Second Division title in our first League season, moving on to Grimsby Town in July 1894. Happy birthdays 1934 - Left-winger Alan A’Court was born in Rainhill. He signed for free from Prescot Cables in September 1952 and scored 63 times in 381 reds games, helping us to the Second Division title in 1962, as well as representing England at the 1958 World Cup in his time at Anfield. He left to join Tranmere Rovers in October 1964. 1949 - Forward Alun Evans was born in Bewdley, near Kidderminster. He was Britain’s first £100,000 teenager when he signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers in September 1968, our new record signing. He scored 33 goals in 111 reds games, including appearing in the 1971 FA Cup Final, before being sold to Aston Villa for £70,000 in June 1972. 1911 - Forward Harold Barton was born in Leigh in Lancashire. He signed for free from Whitegate Juniors in November 1928, and famously bagged a treble in our 7-4 derby win at Anfield in February 1933, netting a total of 29 goals in 109 reds games before joining Sheffield United in June 1934. 1994 – Young full-back Ryan McLaughlin was born in Belfast. He played his first game for the first team against Roma in Boston in July 2012, but moved on to Oldham Athletic in August 2016 having been released without making a senior appearance. 1998 – South African winger Bob Priday died. His chances were limited to forty reds games after he made the switch from Cape Town City in December 1945, as he was behind Billy Liddell in the pecking order. He notched seven times while at Anfield, before moving on to Blackburn Rovers in March 1949. Another trophy in the cabinet 1986 - We beat Everton 4-1 at Goodison Park to claim the Screen Sport Super Cup, thanks to a 7-2 aggregate scoreline. Ian Rush bagged a treble, with Steve Nicol also netting that night and Graeme Sharp striking a late consolation, one of his seven derby goals. Mark Lawrenson was making his 300th reds appearance. Rushie off the mark 1981 - Substitute Ian Rush scored his first reds goal as we beat Finnish champions Oulun Palloseura 7-0 in a European Cup First Round fixture, to progress 8-0 on aggregate. A minute’s silence was held before the game, in remembrance of Bill Shankly’s death the day before. Kenny Dalglish opened the scoring with a diving header, our hundredth European Cup goal. Terry McDermott bagged a brace with Ray Kennedy, David Johnson and sub Mark Lawrenson all also on target, the latter with his first reds strike. Anfield trebles 1975 - John Toshack bagged a treble of headers as we beat Hibernian 3-1 in the second leg of our UEFA Cup First Round tie, to progress 3-2 on aggregate. Winger Alex Edwards netted Hibs’ consolation. 1978 - Jimmy Case netted all the goals in our 3-0 League defeat of Bolton Wanderers, although the game was somewhat spoiled by a smoke bomb that was thrown from the Anny Road end into the Bolton goal area. Kenny Dalglish was stand-in captain in the absence of Emlyn Hughes. 1950 - We hosted the Trotters in another top-flight match, with Jack Balmer netting twice and Jimmy Payne also on target as we drew 3-3. Rushie arrives 1980 - Ian Rush arrived from Chester for a fee of £300,000, which remains their record sale. He then played for Cardiff City and Reading. Luis at the treble 2012 - Luis Suárez scored a stunning hat-trick as we won 3-0 at Norwich City, the first of his six trebles for the club. He struck twice before the break, rounding the scoring out with a sublime lob over the keeper from just inside the opposition half. 2013 - Suárez was named in the PFA Team of the Year, having scored thirty times in 44 outings that campaign. 2014 - Steven Gerrard was named as the Liverpool Echo’s Sports Personality Of The Year. Semi-final disappointments 1971 - A goalless draw at Leeds United was not enough to take us through to the Fairs Cup Final, after having lost the first leg 1-0 at Anfield. Ron Years played his 454th and last game for the club. 1980 - Our third FA Cup Semi-final match of the season with Arsenal still could not separate the sides, as the game at Villa Park ended 1-1 after extra time, with Kenny Dalglish bagging our goal in the final minute of normal time after Alan Sunderland had opened the scoring with one of his six goals past us after just sixteen seconds. Ray Clemence made his 600th reds outing in this game, while David Johnson had to leave the pitch for a while having been knocked unconscious. Unfortunately, we lost the fourth game three days later. 2011 – Future red Mohamed Salah played as Egypt Under-20’s lost a penalty shoot-out to Cameroon after a goalless draw in their African Championship Finals Semi-final in South Africa. Beginnings and ends 2007 - Left-back Emiliano Insúa made his reds debut as we lost 2-1 at Portsmouth, with Robbie Fowler having a goal ruled out for offside. Sami Hyypiä scored in his 400th reds game, our 7,000th in League football, while Jerzy Dudek made his 186th and final appearance for the club. Benjani netted the first of his four goals against the reds with Niko Kranjcar also scoring for Pompey. 1900 – Full-back Archie Goldie played his 149th and final reds game in our 2-1 top-flight win at Glossop as we ended the season in tenth. His brother Bill struck, as did John Walker before the home side grabbed a last-minute consolation through G. Colville. He signed from Sunderland in November 1894 and struck twelve times in 33 reds games, sometimes alongside his cousin, right-back Andrew Hannah. Davy helped us to the Second Division title in 1896 before moving to Dundee the following year. 1974 - Dominic Matteo was born in Dumfries. He netted twice in 155 games for us before leaving for Leeds United in a £4m deal in August 2000. 2020 – Gini Wijnaldum became a father for the third time, to Julian Emilio. 2006 – Welsh forward Tony Rowley died. He bagged a treble on his debut after signing from Stourbridge in October 1953, going on to net 38 times in 61 reds games. Joe Fagan brought the Irish international to Anfield in August 1983 from Brighton & Hove Albion for £200,000. Our first League Cup 1981 - We claimed our first League Cup by beating West Ham United 2-1 in a Villa Park replay. Paul Goddard opened the scoring for the Hammers before Kenny Dalglish equalised with a glorious volley, to complete his record of scoring in every round. Alan Hansen was the unlikely match-winner, with a deflected header from a corner after half an hour. Ian Rush made only his second ever reds appearance in this game as veteran winger Steve Heighway had failed a late fitness test. This was the first time that the winners received medals, rather than tankards! Reds honoured 2002 - Gérard Houllier was awarded the Légion d’Honneur, one of the highest civil awards in France, for his achievements in the football world, both with the reds and the French national set-up. 2003 - El-Hadji Diouf was named African Footballer Of The Year for the second successive season. Emile off the mark 2000 - We won a Premiership meeting 3-0 at Coventry City, with our goals coming from a Michael Owen brace and Emile Heskey’s first reds strike. Ex-red Steve Ogrizovic made his 600th appearance for the Sky Blues in this game. Owen’s second goal was our 500th in the Premier League. First and last goals 1922 – Winger Cyril Gilhespy scored the first of his three reds strikes as we beat Oldham Athletic 2-0 at Anfield, after Harry Chambers had opened the scoring. 1961 – Winger Johnny Morrissey struck his sixth and last goal for the club as our Second Division trip to Sheffield United ended in a 1-1 draw. Beating the Baggies 2006 - We won 2-0 at West Bromwich Albion, thanks to goals from Robbie Fowler and Djibril Cissé, from a sixty-yard Xabi Alonso pass. This was Robbie’s 173rd reds goal, moving him up to fifth in our all-time scoring list ahead of King Kenny. Feeling blue at Goodison 1904 - Our biggest defeat on this day came when Alex ‘Sandy’ Young scored four of his twelve goals past us for Everton in their 5-2 win on a not so Good Friday, which helped us on our way to relegation, while the Blues ended the season in third. Right-half Maurice Parry bagged his first reds goal, with Bobby Robinson also netting and Sam Raybould missing a penalty. He signed from Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña for £2.64m in January 2007, and featured 98 times across the defence, as well as notching two goals. He returned to his native Spain to sign for Real Madrid for £3.5m in July 2009. New signings 2000 - Markus Babbel signed a pre-contract agreement to join the reds from Bayern München that summer. He made just two first-team appearances while at Anfield, both from off the bench in the Worthington Cup, moving to Lillestrøm back in his native Norway in February 2002. 1915 – Scottish forward Alexander Smith was born in Buckie, Banffshire. He signed from Buckie Thistle for £150 in February 1937, but only played once for the reds. 1882 – Left-half Samuel Hignett was born in Liverpool. He only made one senior appearance, in a 1-0 home victory over Sunderland in October 1907 after arriving from a local side in April 1905. He left the club in January 1911. Half a millennium for Stevie 2009 - Steven Gerrard played his 500th reds game as we held Blackburn Rovers to a goalless Premiership draw at Ewood Park. The closest we came was when David N’Gog rattled the crossbar. 1925 – Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers struck in the ninetieth minute as we held Blackburn Rovers to a 1-1 draw in a top-flight meeting at Ewood Park. Ted Harper bagged one of his five goals against the reds. Arnell off the mark fast 1953 - Forward Alan Arnell scored on his reds debut as we beat Blackpool 5-2 at Anfield. Right-winger Jimmy Payne netted while appearing for the 200th time with Sammy Smyth also on the scoresheet and Alan A’Court bagging a brace. Half-back Barry Wilkinson was also making his reds bow. Ernest Taylor struck the last two of his five goals past us in this game. Carra’s error 1998 - Jamie Carragher scored an own goal as we lost 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur. George Briggs netted the last of his ten goals against the reds, with Tom Grosvenor and Sam Smith also on the scoresheet. 1896 – We thumped Fleetwood Rangers 9-0 in a Lancashire Senior Cup game at Anfield. George Allan struck four times with Frank Becton also nabbing a hat-trick. Our other goals came from Joe McQue and an own goal. Miki’s bow in Istanbul 2006 - Young Spanish centre-half Miki Roqué made his only reds appearance as a substitute for Xabi Alonso for the final six minutes of our 3-2 defeat at Galatasaray, so becoming the player with the shortest first-class career in our history. This was the final game of our Champions League group, in which we had already secured top spot. Robbie Fowler bagged both our goals, his only reds strikes in the Champions League proper. Young debutants 1990 - Steve McManaman became the first player to play for the England Under-21’s without any first-team experience, as he featured in their goalless friendly draw with Wales at Prenton Park. Birthdays galore 1954 - Midfielder Jimmy Case was born in Liverpool. He signed from South Liverpool for a bargain £500 in May 1973 and bagged 46 goals in 269 reds games, helping us to claim three European Cups, four League titles, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields, before joining Brighton & Hove Albion for £350,000 in August 1981. 1863 - Matt McQueen was born in Harthill, Lanarkshire. He arrived from Leith Athletic in October 1892 and bagged seven goals in 103 games for the reds, playing in every position on the park including 41 games in goal, helping us to claim the Second Division title twice, once while as a keeper. He moved on to Heart Of Midlothian in 1899 but later served the reds as a Director, and then as Manager for five years in the 1920’s, leading us to our fourth League title in 1923. 1958 - Howard Gayle was born in Toxteth. The first black player to represent Liverpool in modern times, he signed professional terms in November 1977 and notched once in five first-team appearances before moving on to Birmingham City in January 1983 for £75,000. 2013 – Under-23’s Assistant Coach Gary O’Neil was born in Beckenham. He had enjoyed a successful playing career with the likes of Portsmouth and Middlesbrough, retiring in the summer of 2019. He joined the reds in August 2020, leaving the following February to take over as Senior First Team Coach at Bournemouth. Two keepers also share a birthday today. 1971 - Brad Friedel was born in Bay Village, Ohio. He made 31 first-team appearances for us after signing from US side Columbus Crew for £1m in December 1997, moving to Blackburn Rovers on a free transfer in November 2000. 1973 - Pegguy Arphexad was born in Guadeloupe. Our former reserve custodian signed on a free transfer in July 2000 but only played six senior reds games, although he claimed six winners’ medals from the bench in his time at Anfield, before moving on to Coventry City in August 2003 after his contract had expired. The Saint departs 1971 - Ian St. John signed for Coventry City after a spell with Hellenic in South Africa. He had notched 118 goals in 425 games for the reds, including the winning goal in the 1965 FA Cup Final. He had also helped us to win two First Division titles, the Second Division and FA Charity Shield since his arrival from Motherwell in May 1961 for a then club record fee of £37,500. Euro disappointment 2016 – Daniel Sturridge gave us a half-time lead in the UEFA Europa League Final against Sevilla in Basel, but we collapsed after the break to lose 3-1 with Jorge Moreno bagging a brace to add to a Kévin Gameiro strike. Midfielder Joe Allen, centre-forward Christian Benteke and centre-half Kolo Touré all played their last reds games. More forward departures 2004 - Emile Heskey was sold to Birmingham City for a fee rising to £6.25m after sixty goals in 223 reds games. He struck sixteen times in 78 games for the Blues before moving to Wigan Athletic for £5.5m in July 2006. 1971 - Steve Peplow left for Swindon Town after a successful loan spell. He signed on at Anfield as a professional in January 1966 and struck nineteen goals for the reserves in 1968/69, but only played three senior games, without finding the back of the net. Other reds signings 1927 - Forward Tom Devlin signed from Preston North End for £250. He was unable to make the first-team, unlike his brother, centre-forward Willie, who was at Anfield at the same time. He moved on to Swindon Town in July 1928. 1985 - Reserves defender Alex Watson signed for the reds as a professional. He only made nine first-team appearances, including our 1988 FA Charity Shield win, before joining Bournemouth in January 1991 for £150,000. The end of the road for A’Court 1963 - Alan A’Court played his 354th and final League game as we lost 2-0 at Aston Villa in a game postponed from Boxing Day to finish the season in eighth place with George Graham netting the first of his four goals past us and Bobby Thomson also on target. He had played 381 games for us in total, scoring 63 goals, helping us to win the Second Division title in 1962. 1982 - Our only other first-class game on this day produced a goalless draw at Middlesbrough, the final game of a season in which we won the League by four points from Ipswich Town. Led by skipper Graeme Souness, the reds had all snuck out of the hotel to go down the pub shortly before the game! On target 2014 – Future red Dominic Solanke netted as England Under-17’s beat Portugal 2-0 in their European Championships Semi-final in Malta, with fellow future red Joe Gomez also in action. First and last caps 1935 - Ex-reds defender Tom Gardner won his second and final cap as England beat the Netherlands 1-0 in a friendly in Amsterdam. 1938 – Ex-reds reserves centre-half Matt O’Mahoney won the first of his six caps for Ireland in their 2-2 friendly draw with Czechoslovakia in Prague. 1939 – O’Mahoney played again as Ireland again drew 2-2 in a friendly, this time with Hungary in Budapest. 1950 - Bill Jones made his second and final senior appearance for England as they beat Belgium 4-1 in a friendly in Brussels.
