A roasting for the Turks 2007 - We secured the record ever victory in the Champions League by any club when we trounced Beşiktaş JK 8-0 at Anfield, with the lead only 2-0 at half time. Yossi Benayoun bagged a hat-trick, with his first strike being our 500th in Europe. Peter Crouch and Ryan Babel netted twice each with Steven Gerrard also on target. Sami Hyypiä played his hundredth club European game, while Babel became our hundredth different scorer in continental competition. This was Rafael Benítez’s fiftieth Champions League game in charge of the reds. It was announced on the same day that the construction of the club’s new home would begin in the spring after the city council approved revised plans for a 60,000-seater stadium. These plans were later shelved. Rush scored one, Rush scored two 1982 - Ian Rush scored four goals in our 5-0 thumping of Everton at Goodison Park, our record win there. The Blues had debutant Glenn Keeley sent off early on for a professional foul on Kenny Dalglish, while Mark Lawrenson was also on target, his only strike in eighteen derby matches. In comes Dave 1959 - Centre-forward Dave Hickson controversially signed for the reds from Everton for £12,000, as he was the Blues’ current darling. His arrival added an extra 15,000 to the usual gate as we beat Second Division pace-setters Aston Villa 2-1 at Anfield on his debut the following day, with one supporter running onto the pitch to kiss him on the cheek! He went on to score 38 times in 67 reds games. Mo again 2022 – Mohamed Salah scored in his fourth consecutive game as we won 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur, bagging a first-half brace before Harry Kane struck one of his nine goals past us. Gini off the mark 2016 – Midfielder Gini Wijnaldum bagged his first reds strike, the final goal as we trounced Watford 6-1 at Anfield to end the day on top of the League table. Sadio Mané nabbed a brace, with Philippe Coutinho, Emre Can and Roberto Firmino also on target. He scored one goal 2003 - Djimi Traoré scored his only ever reds goal in a Romanian mud-bath as we drew 1-1 with Steaua Bucureşti in a UEFA Cup Second Round match. 2018 – We lost a UEFA Champions League group game 2-0 at Crvena Zvezda, also known as Red Star Belgrade, with Milan Pavkov bagging a brace inside the opening half hour. The reds hit the woodwork twice after the break but failed to make the break-through. European firsts 1973 - Crvena Zvezda beat us 2-1, our first ever home defeat in the European Cup, with Kevin Keegan having an effort chalked off despite the ball appearing to have crossed the line. Chris Lawler was on target in both legs, with his goal at Anfield being his 61st and last reds strike as we went out at the Second Round stage 4-2 on aggregate. 1991 - We beat Auxerre 3-0 in the UEFA Cup, the only time the reds have overcome a two-goal first leg deficit in European competition in normal play, to reach the Third Round. Jan Mølby set things rolling with a penalty before Mike Marsh bagged his first reds goal to level the tie with a stunning header, with Mark Walters scoring a memorable winner in front of the Kop seven minutes from time. The visitors had Frederic Darras sent off with fourteen minutes remaining. 1979 - We also travelled to France, losing a friendly 3-1 at Lille OSC, with Terry McDermott scoring our goal from the spot. Scully at Anfield 1983 - The title sequence of ‘Scully’ was filmed at Anfield, with actor Andrew Schofield running out onto the pitch with the reds, in place of Kenny Dalglish. Ian Rush, Michael Robinson and Steve Nicol’s diving header handed us a 3-0 derby win to send us back to the top of the table. Births and death 1870 - Forward Jimmy Stott was born in Darlington. He signed from Middlesbrough in August 1893, netting fourteen times in seventeen games as we won the Second Division title in our first League season, moving on to Grimsby Town in July 1894. 1909 – England international inside-forward Frank Becton died of tuberculosis. He joined the reds from Preston North End for £100 in March 1895, our first confirmed three-figure fee, and struck 42 times in 86 reds games before joining Sheffield United in October 1898. 1920 – Former Chairman Sir John Smith was born. He held the post between 1973 and 1990, overseeing the most glorious period of our history, having joined the board as a Director in 1971. Semi’s bow 2002 - Jon Otsemobor made his senior reds bow in our 3-1 Worthington Cup Third Round victory over Southampton at Anfield, thanks to Patrik Berger’s 35th and final reds goal and strikes from El-Hadji Diouf and Milan Baroš. Steven Gerrard captained Liverpool for the first time. On the same day, Steve McManaman became the first Englishman to skipper Real Madrid, leading them to a 4-0 Copa del Rey defeat of Oviedo. 1920 - James Penman played his one and only senior reds game, as a replacement for Donald McKinlay at left-back, as we lost 1-0 at home to Bradford Park Avenue. David McLean bagged one of his eight goals against the reds. Red centurions 1965 - Ian Callaghan played his 200th reds game as we won 2-0 at Sheffield Wednesday, thanks to goals from Roger Hunt and Peter Thompson inside the final fifteen minutes. 1897 – Matt McQueen reached a century of reds appearances as Nottingham Forest won 2-1 at Anfield with Dan Cunliffe on target. Beating the double winners 1971 – Ian Ross scored his fourth and final reds goal with Emlyn Hughes and Ian Callaghan also on target in a 3-2 win over double winners Arsenal at Anfield. Tommy Smith put through his own net, with future red Ray Kennedy also scoring. A goalscoring international debut 1957 - Reds left-winger Alan A’Court scored his only England goal on his debut in their 3-2 defeat by Northern Ireland at Wembley. The game counted for both the British International Championships and as a World Cup Qualifier. Keeper Tommy Younger played for Scotland on the same day. 2011 - Krisztián Adorján made his debut for Hungary Under-19’s as they beat the Faroe Islands 3-1 in a friendly in Portugal. First goals 1937 - Forward John Shafto bagged the first of his three senior reds goals as we lost 4-3 at home to Brentford, their only ever Anfield victory in nine attempts. Alf Hanson and Willie Fagan struck our other goals, while Bobby Reid bagged a treble for the visitors, the last of his five strikes against the reds, with Dave McCulloch grabbing one of his seven goals past us. 1954 - Left-half Geoff Twentyman grabbed his first reds goal in our 2-1 Second Division victory over Hull City, with Eric Anderson also on target in our first ever meeting with the Tigers. Jordan’s day 1995 – Midfielder Jordan Williams was born in Bangor. He left the reds after just one senior appearance to sign for Rochdale in June 2018 after a loan spell. Scots in and out 1935 - Scottish international right-half Tom Morrison was sold to Sunderland after four goals in 254 reds games. He helped them to claim the League title in his first season on Wearside. 1897 - Forward Robert Colvin signed from Oldham County. He only ever made three senior appearances, without finding the net, and then joined Glossop North End the following year. Management moves 2002 - Steve Nicol was appointed permanent head coach of New England Revolution, a role he held for almost nine years. 2010 - Christian Ziege was sacked as Manager of DSC Arminia Bielefeld, having been in charge for just six months. 2020 - Nigel Clough was named as Manager of Mansfield Town, leading them to sixteenth in League Two at the end of his first campaign. An unlucky break 1999 - Derby County’s Stefano Eranio suffered a broken leg after a tackle from Sami Hyypiä as we won 2-0 at Anfield with goals from Danny Murphy and Jamie Redknapp. Also on the move 1987 - Future reds loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe joined Third Division Bristol City on loan from Walsall. He only made three appearances for the Robins. 2014 – Jermaine Pennant signed for Indian Super League side Pune City, playing seven times. Meanwhile, left-back Andrea Dossena joined Leyton Orient. He was released at the end of the season after netting once in fifteen outings as they were relegated to League Two. 2019 – Argentinian centre-half Gabriel Paletta signed for S.S.D. Monza 1912, netting twice in fifty outings as he helped them to get promoted from Serie C in his first season, and then consolidate in Serie B. Other reds games 2004 – Darren Anderton struck the only goal of Birmingham City’s visit. 1993 – Nigel Clough netted as we beat West Ham United 2-0 at Anfield, with Alvin Martin putting through his own net. 1976 – David Fairclough was on target as we won 1-0 at Sunderland. 1948 – We beat Portsmouth 3-1 in L4. Billy Liddell, Jack Balmer and Cyril Done were all on the scoresheet, with Peter Harris scoring the first of his eight goals against the reds. 1926 – Huddersfield Town won 3-2 at Anfield as Dick Forshaw bagged a brace. Future red Willie Devlin scored, before Billy Smith netted one of his four past us and George Brown struck one of his nine. 1909 – We were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Bury. Arthur Goddard and Jack Parkinson scored with Tom Chorlton having a twice-taken penalty saved both times. Tom Kay struck one of his four goals past us, with Angus McIntosh also scoring. Jayden’s farewell 2021 – Jayden Danns won his third and last cap for England Under-16’s as they won a friendly 3-2 in France. Stevie at the treble 2010 - Steven Gerrard scored a second-half hat-trick as we came from behind to beat SSC Napoli 3-1 in our UEFA Europa League group game at Anfield, only the second reds substitute to net a treble, which included a penalty. Ezequiel Lavezzi put the visitors ahead, who included ex-red Andrea Dossena in their ranks. Five thousand goals 1990 - Ian Rush’s second goal in our 3-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur was our 5,000th goal in top-flight League football. Peter Beardsley also netted for the reds, having come on in place of John Barnes early in the first half. Bruce Grobbelaar reached a personal milestone in this game, playing for the reds for the 500th time as we won for the tenth time in our opening eleven League matches. Gary Lineker netted Spurs’ consolation, the last of his six strikes past us. We have visited Spurs twice more for First Division matches on this day in history. 1922 - Harry Chambers bagged a brace with Cyril Gilhespy netting his third and final reds goal and Dick Forshaw also on target as we won 4-2. 1967 - Roger Hunt struck as we held them to a draw, with Welsh winger Cliff Jones bagging one of his five strikes against the reds. Recent milestones 2006 - Jamie Carragher played his 300th League game as a Dirk Kuyt brace was enough to see off Reading at Anfield in our first ever League encounter. 2009 - Andriy Voronin played his fortieth and final reds game as we held Olympique Lyonnais to a 1-1 draw in their Stade Gerland, before being replaced by goalscorer Ryan Babel. Unfortunately, Lisandro López bagged a late equaliser. 2012 – Steven Gerrard played his 600th game for the club as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Newcastle United. Yohan Cabaye put the visitors ahead just before the break, with Luis Suárez bagging a sublime equaliser midway through the second period. 2017 – Keeper Simon Mignolet skippered the side for the first time as we thumped West Ham United 4-1 at their London Stadium. Mohamed Salah and Joël Matip scored inside the first half an hour, with Manuel Lanzini pulling a goal back after the break. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain soon restored our two-goal lead, with Salah then adding his second. Razor sharpened 1987 - Ray Houghton notched his first reds goal as we drew 1-1 at Wimbledon’s Plough Lane, with Steve McMahon reaching a century of appearances for the club. Cally off the mark 1961 - Ian Callaghan struck the first of his 68 reds goals as we won 3-1 at Preston North End in a Second Division match, our most recent League visit. Preston-born Gordon Milne netted against his former club with Ian St. John also on the scoresheet as we secured our first win there in thirteen attempts. 1895 - We also visited Deepdale when Jimmy Ross netted as we lost a testimonial played for Preston’s Bob Holmes 2-1. 1907 – Preston won a Lancashire Senior Cup Semi-final 2-1 at Anfield, with left-half Jim Bradley nabbing our goal. 1911 - John Bovill bagged his first reds goals, striking twice in our 3-0 defeat of Notts County at Anfield. Arthur Goddard was also on the scoresheet. Happy birthday Gerd 1982 - Neil Mellor was born in Sheffield. He struck six times in 22 senior appearances for the reds, before moving to Preston North End in August 2006 for a reported £0.5m. Kettle’s debut 1975 - Left-back Brian Kettle made his reds debut in our 6-0 UEFA Cup Second Round thumping of Real Sociedad, as we went through 9-1 on aggregate en route to our second triumph in the competition. David Fairclough struck his first reds goal in just his second game with Phil Neal also scoring for the first time as centre-half Max Thompson appeared for the second and last time. Ray Kennedy nabbed a brace with John Toshack and Steve Heighway also on the scoresheet, while Kevin Keegan blasted a penalty over the bar. Thumping the Mancs 2001 - A Michael Owen brace and a John Arne Riise belter gave us a 3-1 win over Manchester United in an 11:30 kick off, to record our third victory over them that year, and third straight League win for the first time since December 1979. David Beckham netted for the visitors. 1944 - We also hosted them in Wartime League match with Don Welsh netting twice, including a penalty, in a 3-2 victory, as we also benefited from a Roughton own goal. Spanish stalemate 2008 - We had to rely on a stoppage-time Steven Gerrard penalty to secure a 1-1 draw with Club Atlético de Madrid in our home UEFA Champions League group game. Future red Maxi Rodríguez had given the visitors the lead, with Fernando Torres again missing out against his former club due to injury. The spot-kick we were awarded was generous, but we had already been denied two much better shouts. Ex-red Luis García featured against us. Meanwhile, new Argentina boss Diego Maradona declared that he wanted Javier Mascherano to take over as captain of his country. 2014 – We lost 1-0 at Real Madrid in another group game with Karim Benzema on target, one of his four goals past us to date. This was our third consecutive defeat and third consecutive game without scoring in Europe, both joint club records. Players of the year 2006 - Sami Hyypiä was named Finland’s Player of the Year for the sixth time in eight years. 2003 - John Arne Riise was named the Norwegian PFA Player of the Year for the second year running. Four against 2000 - Mark Viduka scored four goals as Leeds United won a 4-3 thriller at Elland Road, the first of his six strikes against us. Christian Ziege scored his first reds goal, with Sami Hyypiä and Vladimír Šmicer also on target, while Patrik Berger suffered a serious knee injury. This was the first time an opposing player had notched four times against the reds since Jimmy Greaves for Tottenham Hotspur in April 1963. For King Billy 2004 - A plaque in honour of Billy Liddell was unveiled at Anfield. Off against the Russians again 1992 - Mike Marsh was sent off late on in Spartak Moskva’s 2-0 win at Anfield as we crashed out of the European Cup Winners’ Cup 6-2 on aggregate at the Second Round stage. This followed Bruce Grobbelaar’s dismissal in the first leg, and Paul Stewart’s in our preceding game to complete an unwelcome treble. A rare strike against 1978 - Forward John Hawley scored one of only four opposition goals in the League at Anfield that season, as Leeds United left with a point after using rough-house tactics to help secure a 1-1 draw. Terry McDermott was on target for the reds from the spot. Phil Neal had earlier struck a penalty against a post as we dropped points at home for the first time that season, in our seventh home fixture. An Anfield treble 1950 - Chilean forward George Robledo scored a hat-trick for Newcastle United as they won 4-2 at Anfield, the first of his five strikes against us, with Ernest Taylor netting one of his five goals past the reds. Our goals came from Jimmy Payne and a Billy Liddell penalty as keeper Cyril Sidlow played his 165th and last reds game. 1995 - We also lost at St. James’ Park, with Ian Rush grabbing our goal in a 2-1 defeat. Les Ferdinand bagged one of his six goals past us, with Steve Watson also scoring for the Geordies. 1893 - However, we thumped them 5-1 at Anfield when Patrick Gordon struck twice with Harry Bradshaw, Douglas Dick and Jimmy Stott all also on target in our Second Division meeting, the first time we had ever faced the Geordie outfit. These were the first reds strikes for both Bradshaw and Dick. Also in Europe 1970 - We moved into the Third Round of the Fairs Cup, holding Dinamo Bucureşti to a draw on their own patch to progress 4-1 on aggregate, with our equaliser coming from substitute Phil Boersma, the first of his thirty reds goals. 1981 - A thrilling night at Anfield ended in a 3-2 defeat of the previous season’s losing UEFA Cup Finalists AZ’67 Alkmaar, as we reached the Third Round of the European Cup 5-4 on aggregate. The Dutch champions equalised twice after a Terry McDermott penalty and an Ian Rush strike before Alan Hansen won it with five minutes to go. Alkmaar’s second equaliser came from a 25-yard shot from future Nottingham Forest star Johnny Metgod that bounced down from the crossbar and onto Phil Thompson’s foot for a bizarre own goal. Kees Kist scored in both legs for the Dutch side. 1997 - We beat Racing Club de Strasbourg 2-0 at Anfield thanks to a penalty from Robbie Fowler and a late goal from Karlheinz Riedle. This was our hundredth win in Europe, excluding those secured through penalty shoot-outs or coin tosses. However, this was not enough to overcome a three goal first-leg deficit as we went out of the UEFA Cup at the Second Round stage. A rare defeat 1989 - Coventry City won at Anfield for the first time, at the 23rd attempt, when Cyrille Regis struck the only goal of the game, the last of his four strikes past us. Elisha’s last 1933 - Elisha Scott won his 27th and last cap as a reds player as Northern Ireland were held to a 1-1 draw by Wales in the British International Championships in Belfast. He went on to win 31 in total, remaining the last red to achieve full international honours with the province until Ryan McLaughlin in May 2014. Facing the Trotters We have twice faced Bolton Wanderers in the Lancashire Senior Cup in the 1930’s, without tasting defeat. 1939 – We won a First Round tie 3-1 at Burnden Park, with Phil Taylor netting twice and Willie Fagan also on target. 1931 – We were held to a 1-1 Third Round draw at Anfield, with Jimmy Smith nabbing our goal. In and out 2002 - Young ex-reds midfielder Neil Prince was released by Torquay United, just three months after arriving at Plainmoor. He had made eight appearances for the Gulls, and then moved into non-League football. 2010 – Icelandic midfielder Victor Pálsson joined Dagenham & Redbridge on loan, for whom he played three times. He left Anfield to sign for Hibernian in January 2011. 2011 – Ex-reserves forward Krisztián Németh re-signed for MTK Hungária, scoring in his only League outing before joining Dutch side RKC Waalwijk two months later. On the same day, future red Tiago Ilori played for Portugal Under-19’s as they trounced the Faroe Islands 9-1 in a friendly. 2022 - Pako Ayestarán was appointed Assistant Head Coach of Aston Villa, working under Unai Emery. 1903 - Right-back Alf West signed from Barnsley St. Peter’s for £500. He struck six times in 141 reds games across two spells at Anfield. He helped us to the Second Division championship in 1905 and our second League title a year later, joining Reading in June 1909, becoming their club captain but he only stayed for a season before returning to Anfield in May 1910. He only played five times in this second spell before joining Notts County in July 1911. Other reds games 1972 – We beat Chelsea 3-1 at Anfield with Kevin Keegan adding to a John Toshack brace. 1933 – Sam English and Gordon Hodgson netted as we won 2-1 at Birmingham City. After the game, Chairman W.H. Cartwright went into the dressing room to inform English that he had just become the father of a baby daughter. 1905 – We beat Bury 3-1 in L4 with Bobby Robinson scoring twice and John Carlin also netting. 1899 – John Hunter and Tommy Robertson were on target as Sheffield United held us to a 2-1 draw at Anfield. Youngsters for England 2021 – Jayden Danns bagged a brace, his only goals for England Under-16’s, as they beat Belgium 3-2 in a friendly in France. 1964 - Future red David Wilson won his seventh and final cap for England Under-23’s as they beat Wales 3-2 in a friendly at the Racecourse Ground. Keepers on the move 2005 - Paul Harrison joined Wolverhampton Wanderers, having been released from Anfield at the end of the previous season. He never made their first team, soon moving on to Chester City. 2003 – Aussie custodian Brad Jones joined Blackpool on loan from Middlesbrough. He played seven times, returning for another spell a year later. 1983 - Future reds loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe joined Hartlepool United on loan from Sunderland. He turned out for them three times in the Fourth Division. -

On the same day, the departures of Chris Davies, Glen Driscoll, Gary McAllister and Sean O’Driscoll from the backroom staff were all announced. All sitting comfortably 1994 - Neil Ruddock scored the first goal in front of the new all-seater Kop, as we beat Aston Villa 3-2, with Robbie Fowler bagging a brace. Guy Whittingham and ex-red Steve Staunton struck for the visitors as Jamie Redknapp reached a century of reds outings. Other centenaries 1968 - Tommy Smith and Alan Ball, with one of his eleven goals against the reds, were on the scoresheet in the hundredth League derby as we drew 1-1 at Anfield. 1898 – Full-back Archie Goldie played his hundredth reds game as we lost 2-1 at Stoke, with Jack Cox on target. Carra’s record 1999 - Jamie Carragher equalled the record number of England Under-21’s caps, held by Gary Owen, as he won his 22nd cap, captaining them for the first time in their 4-1 friendly defeat of Denmark at Valley Parade. Substitute David Thompson scored, with fellow red Steven Gerrard also in the team. Carra went on to claim 27 in total, which was still an England record until he was overtaken by Scott Carson, and more recently by James Milner who eventually made 46 appearances. 1996 - David Thompson won his first cap at Under-21’s level as a substitute in England’s goalless draw with Poland at Molineux. Future red Emile Heskey was in the starting eleven. Bowing out 1955 - Billy Liddell won his 29th and final cap as Scotland beat Northern Ireland 2-1 at Windsor Park in Belfast. Future reds keeper Tommy Younger won his fifth cap in the same game. 2013 - Craig Bellamy announced his retirement from international football after nineteen strikes in 78 games for Wales. Off the mark 1921 - Harry Beadles struck the first of his six reds goals as we drew 1-1 at Preston North End in a top-flight encounter. Right-half Francis Checkland played his fifth and final reds game that day, with Preston’s late equaliser coming from the spot from future red Archie Rawlings. 1949 – Full-back Ray Lambert bagged the first of his two reds goals, scoring from the spot in our 2-0 defeat of Middlesbrough at Anfield, with Jimmy Payne also netting. Jimmy’s treble 1930 – Jimmy Smith scored a hat-trick as we thumped Everton 5-0 in a Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round tie at Anfield, with Gordon Hodgson and Tom Bradshaw also scoring. Most recently 2022 – We lost 3-2 at Arsenal with Gabriel Martinelli opening the scoring with one of his four goals past us to date. Darwin Núñez equalised, but Bukayo Saka put the Gunners ahead again in first-half stoppage time. Roberto Firmino levelled after the break, but Saka converted a penalty to secure victory. International debuts 2009 – Future red Dejan Lovren came off the bench to make his debut in Croatia’s 3-2 friendly defeat of Qatar in Rijeka. 1997 - Bjørn Tore Kvarme won his only senior international cap as Norway were held to a goalless friendly draw in Oslo by Colombia. Clubmate Stig Inge Bjørnebye also played, with future red Milan Baroš in action for the Czech Republic Under-16’s on the same day. 1995 - Brad Friedel won his first cap as a Galatasaray player as the USA beat Saudi Arabia by the odd goal in seven in a friendly in Washington DC. Future reds Markus Babbel and Christian Ziege both played in Germany’s 6-1 thumping of Moldova in a Euro ’96 qualifier in Leverkusen on the same day. Off to Filbert Street again and again 1927 - We drew 1-1 at Leicester City with Gordon Hodgson on target and Ernie Hine bagging one of his ten strikes past us. 1932 - Hodgson struck again as we won 2-1, with Syd Roberts scoring his first reds goal, while Danny Liddle netted the first of his four goals against the reds. 1938 - Harman van den Berg netted an 89th minute equaliser, his first reds goal, as we drew 2-2 with Berry Nieuwenhuys also on target. Twice against the Robins We have twice played at Ashton Gate on this day in history, winning on neither occasion. 1955 - Bristol City won our Second Division encounter 2-1 with Tony Rowley bagging our consolation as John Atyeo bagged the first two of his five goals past us for the home side. 1974 - We were held to a goalless draw in a Third Round League Cup tie. However, we won the Anfield replay 4-0 three weeks later. More legends 2008 - Kenny Dalglish, Kevin Keegan, Bob Paisley and the 1978 reds team were all inducted into the National Football Museum’s European Hall of Fame at the Echo Arena in Liverpool. Ins and out 1991 - Winger Jimmy Carter joined Arsenal for £500,000, just nine months after signing from Millwall. Both managers played in this game, with Kenny Dalglish lining up against the Cottagers’ new player/manager Ray Lewington. 1995 - Robbie Fowler bagged four in our 5-2 defeat of Bolton Wanderers, his hundredth reds game, with Steve Harkness nabbing our other goal late on. 1939 - We also entertained the Trotters, with Jack Balmer bagging a brace and Matt Busby also on target in a 3-0 friendly victory. Reds sold 1993 - Reserves keeper Mike Hooper left Anfield after 73 reds games to join Newcastle United for £550,000. Adam Reach levelled to send the game into extra time before Suso struck his only goal in his last game for the club. Danny Ings had given us the lead before Derek Asamoah equalised before half time. Happy birthday Fred 1895 - Outside-left Fred Hopkin was born in Dewsbury, Yorkshire. He netted twelve times in 360 reds games after signing from Manchester United for £2,800 in May 1921, helping us to back-to-back League titles in the early 1920’s before re-joining former club Darlington in August 1931. On the same day, a benefit match was held for Matt McQueen at Anfield. He played 105 times for the reds between 1892 and 1899, and later became a director, before managing the side for five years in the 1920’s. An England International XI beat the reds 3-0, with Sheffield United’s Harry Hammond bagging a treble. 1931 – Welsh international centre-forward Des Palmer was born in Swansea. He signed from his hometown club in March 1959, in a £15,000 deal with right-half Roy Saunders moving in the opposite direction. Dortmund for a £1.8m fee in July 1997, and struck fifteen times in 76 reds games, as well as having a positive influence on the young Michael Owen before joining Fulham for £200,000 in September 1999. 1900 – Full-back Jimmy Gray was born in Glasgow. The South African international signed from Transvaal in 1926 but only played one first-team game for the reds, a 2-1 home League defeat by Sheffield United in September 1928. He left in January 1930 to sign for Exeter City for £75, where he is remembered as one of their greatest ever players. European Anfield thumpings 1969 - Alec Lindsay scored on his debut in our 10-0 trouncing of Irish side Dundalk in the Fairs Cup. This is also the first time that Gérard Houllier witnessed the reds in action, while working as a teacher on Merseyside. He was accompanied by future reds coach Patrice Bergues. Birth of the legend 1913 - Bill Shankly was born in Glenbuck, Ayrshire. He was the ninth of ten children, and the youngest of five boys. Words cannot fully explain his importance to the history of Liverpool Football Club. However, his honours as reds boss between December 1959 and July 1974 included three League titles, two FA Cups, UEFA Cup and the Second Division championship. 1936 - Centre-half John Nicholson was born in Liverpool. He signed as a professional in January 1957, but only made one senior appearance before joining Port Vale in August 1961, playing over 200 games for them. 2001 – Midfielder Jake Cain was born in Wigan. He signed as a professional in September 2019, making his senior debut in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay against Shrewsbury Town in February 2020. He netted 39 times in 112 reds games after signing from Newcastle United for £350 in April 1908. He returned to Scotland in January 1912, signing for Raith Rovers. 2006 – South African winger Harman van den Berg died. He signed from Peninsular in his homeland in October 1937, but only managed to score three times in nineteen games before injuries and the Second World War intervened. 2019 – Full-back Steve Parr died. He made twenty appearances without notching after signing on a free transfer from Farrington Villa in May 1948. Seven years later, he joined Exeter City, and ended his playing career with Rochdale. New manager 1936 – George Kay was appointed Manager, replacing George Patterson. He led us to our first League title in 24 years in 1946, and the FA Cup Final four years later. He was forced to retire due to illness in January 1951, and sadly died just three years later. Amongst the players who joined the club during his tenure were the great Billy Liddell and Bob Paisley. Mo yet again 2022 – Mohamed Salah scored in his sixth consecutive opening League game of the season, a Premier League first for any club, with substitute Darwin Núñez also on target as Aleksandar Mitrović struck twice, including one from the spot. In 2014 – Spanish right-back Javier Manquillo joined on a two-year loan from Club Atlético de Madrid, although he returned to his parent club in July 2015 after nineteen reds games. 2002 - Salif Diao signed from Sedan for £4.7m. He made 61 reds appearances, scoring three times, and moved to Stoke City in January 2007 after a successful loan spell there. 1982 - Reserves keeper Steve Ogrizovic joined Shrewsbury Town in a straight swap for Bob Wardle. Oggy had only made five first-team appearances for the reds, going on to play nearly a hundred times for the Shrews in his two years at Gay Meadow, before joining Coventry City. Wardle never made our first team and was forced to retire through injury inside a year. 1893 – Forward Jimmy Stott signed from Middlesbrough. He netted fourteen times in seventeen games as we won the Second Division title in our first League season, moving on to Grimsby Town in June 1894. Out 1999 - Øyvind Leonhardsen left for Tottenham Hotspur for £3m, after seven goals in 49 reds games. He said, “Things have been going pretty well in Liverpool, so it will be a bit sad to leave this club”. He struck eleven times in 72 games for Spurs, before moving on again to Aston Villa in August 2002. 2007 - Reserves centre-back Miki Roqué joined Xerez Club Deportivo SAD on loan. However, he only turned out once for them in the League and spent the following season with Cartagena, being released by the reds in June 2009. He sadly died in June 2012 aged just 23. 2014 – Midfielder Conor Coady was sold to Huddersfield Town for £375,000. He had only made two senior appearances, netting three times in 48 games for the Terriers before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers for a reported £2m in July 2015. 2015 - Spanish centre-half Rafael Páez signed for AD Alcorcón, having failed to break through at Anfield. 2016 – Centre-half Lloyd Jones signed a new two-year contract with the reds and joined Swindon Town on loan on the same day. He struck twice in 29 outings in his one season with the Robins, leaving the reds in January 2018 to sign for Luton Town. The start of a legend 1974 - Legendary reds boss Bob Paisley took charge of the reds for the first time, in a friendly against 1. FC Kaiserslautern at their Betzenbergstadion. Kevin Keegan was sent off in what the club claimed was a case of mistaken identity although we were still able to win 3-1, with Ray Kennedy, Peter Cormack and Phil Boersma on the scoresheet. We led 2-0 after thirty minutes before new signing Kennedy was scythed down by Dietmar Schwager, who was then pushed by Keegan. However, the club claimed that the referee had mistaken him for Peter Cormack, although Keegan admitted years later it had actually been him who had thrown a punch. Aldo bags a treble 1987 - John Aldridge netted a hat-trick, including a penalty, in our 4-1 friendly defeat of Norwegian side Vålerenga. Paul Walsh grabbed the other goal as we came from behind to win. 1986 - We were also in Scandinavia, drawing 1-1 with Danish side Kolding at the Mosevej Sportsplads, with Steve McMahon on target. Three Danish internationals, Allan Hansen, Allan Simonsen and Kent Nielsen, guested for the home side Belgian celebrations 1984 - We took part in a match to commemorate the eightieth anniversary of Belgian side Sporting de Charleroi. Unfortunately, we somewhat spoiled the party by thumping the home side 6-0, thanks to goals from Ian Rush, Michael Robinson, Gary Gillespie, John Wark, Steve Nicol and Ronnie Whelan. Other friendlies 1978 - We trounced Basel 6-0 at their St. Jakob-Park, with Kenny Dalglish, Jimmy Case and Emlyn Hughes all netting to add to a Robert Baldinger own goal and a brace from Ray Kennedy. 1996 - We were held to a goalless draw by Millwall at The Den. 2011 – We beat Valencia 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Andy Carroll and Sotirios Kyrgiakos. On the same day, Dani Pacheco featured as Spain thumped Australia 5-1 in a World Championship Finals group game in Colombia, with R.C.D. Espanyol’s Álvaro Vázquez scoring a hat-trick. 2016 - Sadio Mané scored his first reds goal as thumped Barcelona 4-0 in an International Champions Cup game at Wembley. We benefited from a Javier Mascherano own goal before Divock Origi and Marko Grujić completed the scoring. Not the Wright boss 2004 - Mark Wright resigned as Manager of Chester City. The Board of Directors issued a statement saying that, “Wright persistently flouted his managerial position with regard to the size and budget of the first-team squad. When he departed, Mr. Wright failed even to have the decency to enter the dressing room and address his players, choosing instead to simply drive away.” However, he subsequently had a third spell at the Deva Stadium. Personal honours 2000 - Reds defender Rigobert Song was named in a FIFA all-star squad to take on France in a charity match later in the month. The only other English-based player was Manchester City’s George Weah. 2001 - It was announced that Jerzy Dudek and Sami Hyypiä had both been nominated for UEFA awards, based on their performances in the previous season’s European competitions. A first cap 1997 - Stéphane Henchoz won his first cap as a Blackburn Rovers player, and 24th in total, as Switzerland lost 1-0 in a friendly in Slovakia. 1996 – Future red John Arne Riise nabbed a brace, his first goals for Norway Under-15’s as they thumped Finland 7-1 in a friendly in Øyer. On the move 2002 - Ex-red Paul Ince signed for Wolverhampton Wanderers, a month after being released by Middlesbrough. He played 131 times for the Molineux outfit but left in August 2006 after being overlooked for the Manager’s job. 2003 - Joe Cole joined Chelsea from West Ham United for £6.6m, after thirteen strikes in 150 outings for the Irons. 2007 – Left-back José Enrique moved to Newcastle United from Villarreal for £6.3m, after 25 games for El Submarino Amarillo. 2015 – Future reds winger Mohamed Salah joined Roma on loan from Chelsea, netting fifteen times in 42 games before making the move permanent for a reported €15m a year later. On the same day, Academy keeper Jamie Stephens signed for Barnet, so far playing 65 senior games for the Bees. 2018 – Hungarian forward Krisztián Németh joined Sporting Kansas City from New England Revolution for $350,000 in allocation money and a first-round pick in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft. 2019 – Winger Harry Wilson joined Bournemouth on loan, going on to score seven goals in 35 games as the Cherries were relegated. Carra’s new record 2011 – Jamie Carragher played his 137th European game for the club, a new British record, as we beat Sparta Praha 1-0 at Anfield in the second leg of our UEFA Europa League round of 32 encounter. Dirk Kuyt headed in the only goal of the tie late on Red centurions 1951 - Forward Jack Balmer played his 300th reds game in our 3-2 First Division win at Stoke City as we came back from two goals down. Cyril Done, Bill Jones and Billy Liddell struck our goals in what was our 2,000th first-class fixture. Les Johnston bagged a brace for the Potters. 1976 - We lost at Highbury in what was our hundredth First Division encounter with Arsenal, including sixteen when they were known as Woolwich Arsenal. John Radford struck the only goal of the game in the final minute, the last of his seven goals past us. All Done 1993 - Forward Cyril Done died. He signed from Bootle Boys Brigade in January 1938 and struck 37 times in 110 reds games, helping us to the League title in 1947 and the FA Cup Final three years later. He moved to Tranmere Rovers in May 1952, scoring nearly a century of goals for them and Port Vale. Goal of the season 1979 - Kenny Dalglish and Ray Kennedy netted as we won 2-0 at Derby County. Razor’s strike that came at the end of an eight-man passing movement was later named the BBC’s Goal of the Season. Sir Roger’s fifth treble 1962 - Roger Hunt netted his fifth hat-trick of the season in a 5-1 Second Division win over Middlesbrough at Anfield. Ian St. John bagged the other two. Most recently 2020 – We beat West Ham United 3-2 at Anfield to equal the English top-flight record of eighteen successive wins, with Gini Wijnaldum nodding us in front early on. However, we fell behind to an Issa Diop header and Pablo Fornals strike before we eventually triumphed through Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané to restore our 22-point lead at the top of the table. Reds debutants 1912 - Centre-forward Tommy Gracie scored on his reds debut in a 2-2 draw at Bury, with Jimmy Stewart also on target, while half-back John McConnell made his 53rd and final reds appearance amd winger Harold Uren played for the 45th and last time. 1954 - Full-back Tom McNulty made his reds bow as we drew 1-1 at Sheffield Wednesday, with Eric Anderson on target late on and Dennis Woodhead bagging one of his four goals against the reds. Rare goals 2018 – Emre Can headed in his fourteenth and last reds goal, our hundredth of the season to date, opening the scoring as we beat West Ham United 4-1 at Anfield. Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino scored after the break, with Michail Antonio pulling a goal back, one of his five past us to date, before Sadio Mané added another goal. Salah and Mané both also struck the woodwork while Dejan Lovren reached a century of League games for the reds. 1996 - Stan Collymore bagged a brace, with Michael Thomas netting his only goal of the season to give us a 3-2 League win at Blackburn Rovers. Stan’s first goal came from a tamely struck shot that was heading straight into the arms of Tim Flowers until it unexpectedly struck a divot and bounced into the net! Cue 5,000 travelling Kopites singing ‘England’s number one’ to the rueful keeper. Jason Wilcox struck one of his four goals against the reds, with Tim Sherwood also scoring as Rob Jones played his 200th game for the club. Happy birthdays 1878 - Inside-left Andy McGuigan was born in Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire. He signed from Hibernian in May 1900 and bagged fourteen goals in 37 reds games, including five against Stoke at Anfield in January 1902, as he became the first red ever to score so many in one game. He was part of our first League title-winning side in 1901, before joining Middlesbrough the following year. He later returned to Anfield as a scout and was a club director as we won back-to-back titles in 1922 and 1923. 2001 - Midfielder Luis Longstaff was born in Darlington. He joined the reds from Newcastle United in 2015, making his senior debut in our League Cup defeat at Aston Villa in December 2019, although he was released in June 2022. On the same day, future red Ragnar Klavan played for Estonia Under-17’s. Four for Fagan 1940 - Willie Fagan netted four goals, including a penalty, as we won 8-3 at Port Vale in a Wartime League fixture. Tosh at the Bernabeu again 1999 - John Toshack was appointed Manager of Real Madrid for the second time. He only remained in charge for nine months on this occasion before being sacked, allegedly for criticising his players in public. Mixed fortunes against the Trotters We have faced Bolton Wanderers three times on this day in history in three different competitions, with three different outcomes, each at different venues. 1937 - A Harry Gosling own goal handed us a 1-0 top-flight victory at Burnden Park. 1945 - Jackie Campbell netted as we drew a Wartime League meeting 1-1 at Anfield. 1894 – We lost an FA Cup Third Round tie 3-0 at Bolton’s old Pike’s Lane ground as forward Jimmy Stott played for the seventeenth and final time. A Dublin first 1981 - Steve Heighway and ex-red Joey Jones both played in the first ever full international to be played at Tolka Park in Dublin. Wales beat the Republic of Ireland 3-1. Other reds games 1968 – We beat Leicester City 3-1 at Anfield despite falling behind, thanks to second-half goals from Ian Callaghan, Geoff Strong and Tony Hateley. 1965 – We defeated Birmingham City by the odd goal in seven in L4 as we led on four separate occasions. Ian Callaghan scored twice, including the eventual winner, with Roger Hunt and Peter Thompson also on the scoresheet. 1934 – Sunderland held us to a 1-1 draw at home, with Raich Carter putting the visitors ahead with one of his six goals past us. Double debutants 1991 - Kenny Dalglish’s final signing David Speedie scored on his reds debut to equalise a Steve Bruce penalty as we drew 1-1 with Manchester United at Old Trafford. It was the first of his six goals in just fourteen games for us. 1894 - Left-half William Hughes made his only reds appearance in a 4-0 home League defeat of Northwich Victoria. Duncan McLean scored from the spot, with our other goals coming from Harry Bradshaw and a Jimmy Stott brace, his last goals for the club. Mixed derby fortunes 1968 - Our last defeat on this day for over fifty years came in a League derby at Goodison Park, when Howard Kendall netted the only goal of the game, with Chris Lawler making his 200th reds appearance. 2007 - We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield, with Craig Bellamy having a goal disallowed. Rafael Benítez angered Blues fans by correctly referring to them as a “smaller team” in the aftermath of this game. 1990 - Our other first-class derby brought a 2-1 win at Anfield thanks to a John Barnes goal and a penalty from Peter Beardsley, with Graeme Sharp heading in the Blues’ goal, one of his seven against us. 1945 - We lost a Wartime League fixture at Goodison, with future reds boss Phil Taylor on target in a 4-1 defeat. Brighton & Hove Albion were the visitors to Anfield, with Gerry Byrne scoring his first reds goal and Roger Hunt and Ian St. John also netting in our 3-1 victory, after we had been behind at half time. Earning our Spurs 1934 - Berry Nieuwenhuys struck twice as we beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at Anfield, with Gordon Hodgson netting from the spot. George Hunt struck the first of his five goals against the reds. 1996 - We entertained the north London outfit again, although this time the match ended goalless. Future Spur John Scales made his fiftieth League appearance for the reds in this game. This was Tom Watson’s 600th game in charge, while William Stuart appeared for the fifth and final time. He signed from Chester for £5,500 in June 1955, bagging three goals in 249 games, but did not survive Bill Shankly’s early clear-out, returning to his former club in August 1962. 2001 – Centre-half Rhys Williams was born in Preston. He has made nineteen senior appearances since turning pro in February 2019, also spending much of his time out on loan. On the move 1995 - Steve Harkness joined First Division Southend United on loan. He played six times while at Roots Hall, before returning to establish himself in the reds first-team. 2011 - Dietmar Hamann joined Leicester City as a First Team Coach, working under Sven-Göran Eriksson for the rest of the season. 2021 – Czech keeper Vitezslav Jaros joined Irish Premier League side St. Patrick's Athletic on loan, being named as their Player of the Year and helping them to claim the FAI Cup. In comes Harry 1936 - Right-half Harry Eastham signed from Blackpool on a free transfer. His career was badly interrupted by the Second World War as he bagged four goals in 68 reds games, but he did help us to claim the League title in 1947 before joining Tranmere Rovers in May 1948. Making the Final 2022 – Mohamed Salah captained Egypt as they were held to a goalless draw by Cameroon in their Africa Cup of Nations Semi-final in Yaoundé, before they progressed in a penalty shoot-out. Ex-red Kevin Stewart featured for Jamaica as they lost a World Cup qualifier 1-0 to Costa Rica in Kingston on the same day. Stevie’s day 1996 - Steven Gerrard made his debut for England Under-16’s, coming on as a substitute in their 4-0 thumping of Denmark. 2008 - Gerrard was named England’s best player for 2007 by the visitors to TheFA.com. 2009 – He was voted the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month for January 2009. Other reds games 1923 – We won an FA Cup Second Round tie 2-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, thanks to goals from Dick Johnson and Dick Forshaw. We were knocked out by Sheffield United at Anfield at the next hurdle. 1906 – Alf West scored as we beat Barnsley 1-0 at the same stage in a game that was moved from Oakwell to Anfield. We reached the Semi-final where we lost out to Everton that campaign. 1900 – We defeated Blackburn Rovers 3-1 in a top-flight encounter in L4. Jack Cox struck twice with Tommy Robertson also on target. International reds 1900 – Ex-red Robert Neill won his second and last cap for Scotland in their 5-2 defeat of Wales in the British International Championships at Pittodrie. 1945 - Matt Busby skippered Scotland as they lost 3-2 to England in a Wartime international at Villa Park. Fellow reds Willie Fagan, Jim Harley and Billy Liddell all also played. 1971 – Emlyn Hughes played for England in their 1-0 European Championships qualifying win in Malta. 1988 – Future red Ronnie Rosenthal played as Israel lost a friendly 2-0 to Romania in Haifa. 2004 - Ex-red Daniel Sjölund won his first cap as an official Djurgårdens IF player, winning his third cap as a substitute in Finland’s 2-1 friendly defeat by China in Guangzhou. On the same day, ex-red Rigobert Song captained Cameroon as they drew 0-0 with Egypt in an Africa Cup of Nations Finals group game in Tunisia. Signing on 2015 – Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho signed a new contract until 2020, later further extended. He went on to notch 54 times in 201 reds games before moving on to Barcelona for a mammoth initial £105m fee in January 2018. -
In rides a knight 1958 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt signed for the reds from Stockton Heath. He netted 285 times in 492 reds games, and his 244 League goals remain a club record. He has the honour of being the first red to win the World Cup while at Anfield, while his club medal haul includes two League championships, an FA Cup, FA Charity Shield and a Second Division title. Happy birthday Jim 1963 - Left-back Jim Beglin was born in Waterford in the Republic of Ireland. He was Bob Paisley’s last signing, from Shamrock Rovers for £20,000 in May 1983, and went on to score three times in 98 reds appearances. He helped us to four trophies in 1986, the League and FA Cup double, a shared FA Charity Shield and the Screen Sport Super Cup. After breaking his leg against Everton in January 1987, he moved on to Leeds United, and is now a regular TV commentator. In and out 2014 – Belgian forward Divock Origi signed from Lille OSC Métropole for £9.8m, immediately re-signing on loan for the following season. He netted sixteen times in total in 89 games for Les Dogues and struck 41 times in 175 reds games, including a crucial strike as we claimed the UEFA Champions League Final in Madrid in June 2019, as well as helping us to claim the Premier League title, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and League Cup before joining AC Milan in July 2022. 1974 – Keeper Peter McDonnell signed from Bury for £20,000 to become Bob Paisley’s first signing as boss. He never made the first team but sat on the bench at the European Cup Final in Rome in 1977, and on another 27 occasions, including both legs of the 1976 UEFA Cup Final, three FA Charity Shields and both legs of the UEFA Super Cup Final in 1977. He left Anfield to join Oldham Athletic in August 1978. 2015 – Defender Andre Wisdom joined Norwich City on loan, playing fourteen games for the Canaries in the following campaign. On the same day, future reds loanee centre-half Steven Caulker moved to Southampton from Queens Park Rangers on a temporary basis, but only played eight times before moving to Anfield the following January. 1930 – Scottish forward John McFarlane left the reds to sign for Halifax Town. He had signed from Aberdeen in November 1928 and became our then-youngest ever player when he debuted as we lost 2-1 at home to Everton in the League three months later, aged just seventeen years and 47 days. However, he only played one more senior game. 1894 – Forward Jimmy Stott was sold to Grimsby Town. He arrived from Middlesbrough in August 1893, netting fourteen times in seventeen games as we won the Second Division title in our first League season. Adiós amigos 2013 – Pepe Reina joined Rafael Benítez’s SSC Napoli on loan, playing 41 times in his season in Italy. He helped them to claim the Coppa Italia and to finish third in Serie A. 2009 - Álvaro Arbeloa was sold to Real Madrid for £3.5m. He had struck twice in 98 reds games after signing from Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña for £2.64m in January 2007. 2005 - Antonio Núñez was sold to Real Club Celta de Vigo, netting twice in 32 games as they finished sixth in La Liga in his first season, after notching just once in 27 reds outings. Meanwhile, reserves winger Richie Partridge signed for Sheffield Wednesday. He struck once in twenty games for the Owls as they survived in the Championship, moving on to Rotherham United in June 2006. Roy’s winning start 2010 – Roy Hodgson took charge of the reds in a first-class game for the first time as we won 2-0 at Rabotnički Skopje in the Third Qualifying Round of the UEFA Europa League, thanks to a David N’Gog brace. Forwards David Amoo, Lauri Dalla Valle and Milan Jovanović all played their first reds games as Lucas made his debut as skipper. Stephen Darby played his sixth and last reds game. Less praised arrival 2002 - Young French keeper Patrice Luzi signed from AS Monaco on a free transfer. He made just one first-team appearance for the club, as substitute for the injured Jerzy Dudek in our long overdue League win at Chelsea in January 2004. Pepe ventures out 2006 - We lost 3-2 to 1. FC Kaiserslautern in Liechtenstein. Jermaine Pennant played his first reds game, while Robbie Fowler came on as a substitute for the injured Luis García, who had previously replaced him! Pepe Reina played some of the game in midfield, while our goals were scored by García and Craig Bellamy. 2017 – Left-back Andy Robertson played his first reds game as we won 3-0 at Hertha BSC Berlin in a game staged to celebrate both clubs’ 125th anniversaries. Dominic Solanke, Gini Wijnaldum and Mohamed Salah were all on target. Back to Norway We have twice returned to Vålerenga on this day over the years. 1998 - We lost 2-0 to Rosenborg BK. 1999 - Karl-Heinz Riedle, Dietmar Hamann and Erik Meijer all netted in our 4-1 win over Vålerenga themselves to claim the Norway Cup, with the scoring completed by a Fredrik Kjølner own goal. Double debutants 2000 - Both Markus Babbel and Nick Barmby made their first reds appearances in a 4-1 win at SC Freiburg, with Barmby opening the scoring. Emile Heskey, Michael Owen and Steve Staunton also got on the scoresheet. We made a total of thirteen substitutions in the game, our second of that pre-season. A treble from the boss 1945 - Don Welsh netted a hat-trick as we drew 3-3 with a BIA 21st Army side in Hannover in the immediate aftermath of the war. He never made a senior reds appearance, but went on to take charge of the reds in 1951. In 1954 he became the first manager to lead us down a division for over fifty years, becoming the first ever reds boss to be sacked, in 1956. German trips 1994 - We won 1-0 at Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Firestone International Challenge Cup, thanks to a Neil Ruddock goal. 1995 - We returned to Germany, being trounced 5-0 by Ajax in the first round of the Mönchengladbach Trophy. Antonio the champion 2006 - Reds right-back Antonio Barragán was on the winning side as Spain Under-19’s claimed the European Championships by beating Scotland 2-1 in the Final in Poznan. This was his final cap at any level prior to moving to Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña. 2005 – Future red David Martin played for England Under-19’s for the eleventh and final time as they lost 3-1 to France in the European Championships Final in Belfast. Olympian reds 2012 – Future red Daniel Sturridge netted as Great Britain beat United Arab Emirates 3-1 in a Olympics Finals group game at Wembley, with Craig Bellamy and future reds Joe Allen and Steven Caulker also in action. This game was immediately preceded by Senegal’s 2-0 defeat of Uruguay, who were skippered by Luis Suárez and also included Sebastián Coates, with future red Sadio Mané on the winning side. Meanwhile, future red Mohamed Salah struck as Egypt were held to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford by New Zealand. A wise double 2009 – Andre Wisdom struck twice as England Under-17’s trounced the Faroe Islands 8-0 in a Nordic Tournament group game in Trondheim. His clubmate Jack Robinson made his debut at this level, with Conor Coady and future red Conor Thomas also in action. 2014 – Trent Alexander-Arnold and Herbie Kane both played as England Under-17’s drew 1-1 with Finland in a Nordic Tournament group game in Denmark, with the English winning a penalty shoot-out 5-3. 2019 – Future red Darwin Núñez netted for Uruguay Under-22’s in their 2-0 defeat of Peru in Lima in a Pan American Games group fixture. Other friendlies 2021 – We lost 4-3 to Hertha BSC Berlin in Innsbruck, with Sadio Mané, Takumi Minamino and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on target. 1989 - We beat Dynamo Kyiv 2-0 at Wembley in the first round of the Makita International Tournament that also featured Arsenal. John Barnes netted from the spot, with John Aldridge also on target. 1969 - We were held to a goalless draw at Blackpool. On the move 2021 – Polish keeper Jakub Ojrzyński joined Caernarfon Town on loan, making 28 League appearances for the Welsh side. 2016 – Ex-reds reserves defender Jakub Sokolík re-joined Southend United after two loan spells at Roots Hall. He played nine times this time around before moving on to Plymouth Argyle the following January. 2014 – Left-back Andy Robertson joined Hull City from Dundee United for £2.85m after five goals in 44 games for the Terrors. 2009 – Centre-back Kolo Touré joined Manchester City from Arsenal for £16m after netting fourteen times in 326 outings as he helped the Gunners to claim the League title, two FA Cups and two FA Community Shields. 1992 - Neil Ruddock re-signed for Tottenham Hotspur from Southampton for £750,000. He played just fifty games in this second spell at White Hart Lane, and a year later he was on his way to Anfield, where he made a total of 152 first-team appearances. 2006 - Reserves striker Michael Nardiello signed for West Bromwich Albion. Just like at Anfield, he failed to make a senior appearance for the Baggies before being released. 2000 - Michael Thomas joined First Division Wimbledon from SL Benfica on a free transfer. He could only make nine appearances in his one season with the Dons. 1996 - Former reserves striker Mike Newell left Blackburn Rovers for Birmingham City in a £775,000 deal. He was only at St. Andrews for a season, playing just twenty times, before moving on again to Aberdeen. Also in international action 1981 – Future red Glenn Hysén played for Sweden as they beat Finland 1-0 in the Nordic Championships in Halmstad. 2001 – Future red Kolo Touré featured in the Ivory Coast’s 2-1 defeat by DR Congo in a World Cup qualifier in Abidjan.
