Steve McManaman was playing in his 106th consecutive reds game but missed Wimbledon’s visit three days later. This game was postponed from a month earlier. Neil Ruddock reached a century of League outings for the reds. A new stadium 1999 - We played our first official game at Sunderland’s new Stadium Of Light, as goals from Michael Owen and Patrik Berger gave us a 2-0 win. A win at the Bridge 2011 – We won 2-1 at Chelsea when Maxi Rodríguez opened the scoring. Future red Daniel Sturridge equalised, with ex-Blue Glen Johnson nabbing the late winner. An unwelcome European record 2001 - An early Michael Owen strike counted for nothing when Barcelona treated the Anfield crowd to a virtuoso display of attacking football, winning 3-1 in our Champions League group game. This remains the joint highest number of goals we have conceded at home in European competition. Patrick Kluivert, Fabio Rochemback and Marc Overmars struck for the visitors. Half a millennium against 2004 - We conceded our 500th goal in the Premier League when Chris Riggott struck in our 2-0 defeat at Middlesbrough. Future red Bolo Zenden added the second. Al’s milestone 2021 – Alisson Becker reached a half century of clean sheets in the League as we thumped Arsenal 4-0 at Anfield. Sadio Mané headed in the opener before the break, with Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah and Takumi Minamino all on target in the second half. 1965 – We were held to a goalless draw at Stoke City, with Ian St. John playing his 200th reds game. Double treble 1943 - Robert Beattie and future reds Manager Don Welsh both scored hat-tricks as we thumped Southport 9-0 in a Wartime League game at Anfield. Berry Nieuwenhuys, Cyril Done and Jackie Campbell netted the others. Tommy in 1959 – Left-half Tommy Leishman signed from St. Mirren for £10,000, having won the Scottish Cup with them. He helped us back to the First Division in 1962, although he then only made eleven top-flight appearances before returning north of the border, to Hibernian, in January 1963 after a total of seven goals in 118 reds games, including our first ever League Cup strike. Reds firsts 1897 – Forward Pat Finnerhan struck his only reds goal in the final minute, the only score in our top-flight meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield. 1937 – Irish right-back Billy Hood played the first of his three reds games as we lost a top-flight encounter with Huddersfield Town 1-0 at Anfield. Four against Vale 1991 - We won 4-1 at Port Vale in a League Cup Third Round replay, with Steve McManaman, Mark Walters, Ray Houghton and Dean Saunders grabbing our goals. Unfortunately, we were knocked out by Third Division Peterborough United in the next round. Royal approval 2005 - Prince Charles and the Duchess of York visited Anfield to meet participants in the Prince’s Trust football initiative. As part of their visit, they posed for pictures on the pitch with Chairman David Moores, Manager Rafael Benítez, club captain Steven Gerrard and the European Cup. Births and death 1961 - Ex-reserves centre-back Dave Watson was born in Liverpool. He never broke through into the reds first team and went on to far greater success with Norwich City and across Stanley Park. 1993 – Former reserves forward Henoc Mukendi was born in Zaire. He joined the youth system in 2007, signing a new two-year contract in May 2012, but never managed to make the breakthrough, moving into non-League football. 1998 – Outside-right Fred Morris died. He bagged fourteen goals in 48 reds games after joining from Mansfield Town for £7,000 in May 1958, before moving to Crewe Alexandra for £4,000 in June 1960. On the move 1992 - Stan Collymore joined First Division Southend United from Crystal Palace for £150,000. He struck eighteen times in 33 games in his one season with the Shrimpers, before joining Nottingham Forest in a £2m deal in July 1993. 2017 – The departure of Andy Renshaw as Head of Physiotherapy was announced. He had been with the club since 2009. Nottingham wins 1954 - Billy Liddell grabbed the only goal of the game from the spot at Anfield as we beat Nottingham Forest in a Second Division fixture with keeper Doug Rudham making his reds bow. 1982 - Craig Johnston and Kenny Dalglish were on target as we won 2-1 at Notts County. Also recently 2010 – We beat West Ham United 3-0 at Anfield, with all the goals coming before the break. Ex-Hammer Glen Johnson opened the scoring before Dirk Kuyt converted a penalty, with Maxi Rodríguez also heading in. International goalscorers 1974 - John Toshack was on target as Wales thumped Luxembourg 5-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Swansea. Ray Clemence, Steve Heighway and Emlyn Hughes also played in qualifiers that day. 1929 – Forward Tosh Johnson bagged a brace as England thumped Wales 6-0 in the British International Championships at Stamford Bridge while winning his final cap as a Manchester City player. Fellow future red Ernie Blenkinsop also played. Final caps 2002 - Milan Baroš struck as the Czech Republic were held to a 3-3 friendly draw in Teplice by Sweden, with clubmate Vladimír Šmicer also playing. Former reserves forward Haukur Ingi Gudnason won his eighth and final cap as Iceland lost a friendly 2-0 in Estonia. Jerzy Dudek and John Arne Riise were also in international action that day, as were future reds Yossi Benayoun, Steve Finnan, Paul Jones, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Christian Poulsen, Andriy Voronin and Bolo Zenden, as well as ex-red Øyvind Leonhardsen. 2018 – Dominic Solanke netted a brace while winning his last England Under-21’s cap as a reds player in their 5-1 thrashing of Denmark in Esbjerg. On the same day, Danny Ward played for Wales for the first time since moving to Leicester City in their 1-0 friendly defeat in Albania, while Mamadou Sakho won his first cap as a Crystal Palace player as France beat Uruguay 1-0 in a friendly in Paris. Future red Diogo Jota was on target while skippering Portugal Under-21’s, winning his twentieth and last cap at this level as they lost 3-1 in a European Championships Play-off to Poland. Tom Clayton played for Scotland Under-19’s for the third and last time as they drew 2-2 with Sweden in a qualifier in Rhyl, while future red Cody Gakpo struck while winning his fifth and last cap for the Dutch Under-20’s as they beat Italy 3-2 in an Elite League group game. Ajax’s Ryan Gravenberch was on target for the Dutch Under-19’s in their 2-1 friendly defeat or Portugal in Armenia. Also in action that day were Rafael Camacho, Roberto Firmino, Kamil Grabara, Kai McKenzie-Lyle, Andy Robertson, Harry Wilson, Ben Woodburn, future reds Arthur Melo, Takumi Minamino and Sepp van den Berg and ex-reds Joe Allen and Luis Suárez. Facing the Latics 1946 – We were held to a 3-3 draw in the Second Round of the Lancashire Senior Cup at Anfield, with Bill Jones bagging a brace and Billy Liddell also on target. We won the replay, going on to claim the trophy for the seventh time. 1915 – We won a Wartime League fixture 2-1 at Boundary Park, thanks to a William Banks brace. Kenny and Souey for the Scots Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness have both played for Scotland at Hampden Park twice on this day in history. 1974 - They both featured in a 2-1 defeat by Spain in a European Championships qualifier, before either of them had joined the reds. 1985 - Kenny won his 99th cap as Sampdoria’s Souness skippered Scotland to a 2-0 World Cup Play-off win over Australia. Steve Nicol also played. Other reds games 1976 – Ray Kennedy netted a late equaliser as we drew 1-1 at Arsenal. 1971 – We won 2-0 at Coventry City, thanks to a Jack Whitham brace, with Ernie Hunt sent off for the home side. 1948 – Cyril Done struck as Charlton Athletic left L4 with a point, with future red Frank Lock netting for the Addicks. 1926 – We beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 at Anfield as the two bottom side faced each other. Gordon Hodgson and Harry Chambers were on target. 1920 – We lost 2-0 at Newcastle United. 1909 – Arthur Goddard and Jimmy Stewart scored as we beat Preston North End 2-0 in L4. Other internationals 2022 - Caoimhín Kelleher kept a clean sheet as the Republic of Ireland won a friendly 1-0 in Malta. Future red Dominik Szoboszlai plated as Hungary beat Greece 2-1 in Budapest on the same day. 2015 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s as they beat Germany 2-1 in a friendly in Rotherham. 2014 – Cooper managed England Under-16’s in their 2-1 defeat of Scotland in the Victory Shield in Yeovil, with young red Adam Lewis featuring. 2013 – Luis Suárez featured in Uruguay’s goalless draw with Jordan in the second leg of their World Cup Play-off in Montevideo as they reached the Finals in Brazil. 2008 – Future red Raul Meireles played for Portugal in their 6-2 friendly defeat in Brazil. 2007 – Javier Mascherano and future red Maxi Rodríguez played in Argentina’s 2-1 World Cup qualifying defeat in Colombia. Le Boss taken ill 2001 - Gérard Houllier was admitted to Broadgreen Hospital with chest pains during our Anfield fixture with Leeds United. Thankfully he went on to make a full recovery. Future red Harry Kewell scored for the Yorkshire outfit, before Danny Murphy equalised, handing us our 600th Premiership point. The reds therefore became the third team, after Manchester United and Arsenal, to reach this milestone. First ever Merseyside derby 1894 - We played Everton for the first time in a senior game, unfortunately going down 3-0 at Goodison Park in our ninth ever game in the top flight, at the end of which we were still seeking our first win at that level. Tom McInnes went down in history as the first derby goalscorer, with right-winger Alex Latta and left-winger John Bell also netting. The victors received a silk hat each, valued at twenty shillings, on top of their usual win bonus! 1923 - We also lost 2-1 to them in a First Division fixture at Anfield with Jimmy Walsh netting our consolation. Outside-left Fred Hopkin made his hundredth reds appearance in this game. Drama in court 2010 – The prospective sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures went through a dramatic day. First, current club owners George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks obtained a Temporary Restraining Order from a Texas District Court to stop the sale of the club to NESV, before the High Court ruled against Gillett and Hicks. The sale was finally completed two days later. Foxes run off with the points again 1964 - Leicester City came out on top for the third consecutive League season at Anfield, this time winning 1-0, with Mike Stringfellow nabbing one of his five goals against the reds. 1962 - We also lost, going down 3-0 at Filbert Street. Beginnings and end 1955 - Richard Money was born in Lowestoft. The defender spent two years at Anfield after signing from Fulham for £50,000 in May 1980 but was unable to displace either Alan Kennedy or Phil Neal at full-back, making only seventeen first-team appearances before joining Luton Town in April 1982. 2002 – Midfielder Tom Hill was born in Formby. He made his senior debut in our League Cup Quarter-final defeat at Aston Villa in December 2019, signing a new contract in August 2020. 1936 - Forward Bob McDougall died. He signed from St. Cuthbert Wanderers in November 1913, netting once in eight outings before moving on to Falkirk in October 1915. 2020 – Forward Harvey Blair signed as a professional, having joined at Under-12’s level from Manchester United. He signed an extension to his deal the following March, making his senior bow in a League Cup tie at Preston North End in October 2021. Into Europe 1965 - We reached the First Round proper of the European Cup Winners’ Cup when first-half goals from Chris Lawler and a Geoff Strong 25-yard screamer handed us a 2-0 Anfield victory over Juventus, to progress 2-1 on aggregate. Firsts and last 1956 – Forward Eric Anderson played his 76th and final reds game as we lost a Second Division match 2-1 at Bristol City, with Johnny Wheeler bagging his first reds goal. 1900 – Right-half Maurice Parry debuted as Bolton Wanderers lost 2-1 at Anfield. Jack Cox netted with Charlie Satterthwaite nabbing the winner, although he had to be carried off as a result of a collision with Trotters’ keeper John Sutcliffe. Four for young Mickey 1996 - Michael Owen grabbed all four goals as England Under-18’s beat Northern Ireland 4-0 in a European Championships qualifier at York City’s Bootham Crescent. 2010 – Michael Ngoo struck as England Under-19’s lost 2-1 to Belgium in a European Championships qualifier in Visé. Skipper Jonjo Shelvey had a penalty saved, while Andre Wisdom also featured. Misery on the South coast We have twice lost to Southampton at The Dell on this day in history. 1973 - We went down to a 1-0 defeat in a top-flight encounter, with Mick Channon on target with one of his seven strikes past us. 1999 - We lost 2-1 in a Third Round League Cup tie when Michael Owen put us ahead to reach a half century of goals for the club before the home side scored through Dean Richards and Trond Egil Soltvedt. Managerial moves 2007 - It was announced that Assistant Manager Pako Ayestarán was to step down from his role, although he remained contracted to the club until June 2008. Chief Executive Rick Parry said, “The club want to thank Pako for his hard work and contribution to our success over the past three years.” 2014 – Former Academy Manager Steve Cooper was appointed Manager of England Under-16’s. He later took charge of the Under-17’s, leading them to victory in the World Cup Finals in India in October 2017. Goals galore 1917 - We trounced Preston North End 6-0 in a Wartime League match at Deepdale, with Arthur Metcalf grabbing a brace and Jack Waine, Thomas Bennett, Harry Lewis and John Bamber also scoring. 1934 - We beat Birmingham City by the odd goal in nine in a First Division match at Anfield, with our goals coming from Vic Wright, Jimmy McDougall, Sam English and a Gordon Hodgson brace, which included a penalty. Dave Mangnall bagged a treble for the visitors, the last three of his seven goals against the reds, with his second being the 2,000th we had conceded in the top flight, with Harold Booton also netting. 1951 - Jimmy Payne struck twice with John Smith and Billy Liddell also on the scoresheet as we beat Fulham 4-0 in another top-flight fixture in L4. Sheyi Ojo, Jordan Rossiter and future red Dominic Solanke all played for England Under-19’s in a European Championships qualifier on the same day, with future red Marko Grujic playing for Serbia Under-21’s. 2013 – Future reds Charles Itandje and Joël Matip both played as Cameroon drew the first leg of their World Cup play-off 0-0 in Tunisia. 1998 - Frode Kippe won his last Under-21’s cap as a Lillestrøm player as Norway beat Albania 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Drammen. 2019 – Dejan Lovren won his last cap as a reds player as Croatia drew a European Championships qualifier 1-1 in Wales, with Harry Wilson and ex-red Joe Allen featuring for the home side. Andy Robertson captained a Scotland side managed by ex-red Steve Clarke, with Gini Wijnaldum bagging a brace as the Netherlands won a qualifier 2-1 in Belarus. Ex-red Emre Can was sent off as Germany won 3-0 in Estonia, with Fabinho, Roberto Firmino, Virgil van Dijk, future reds Arthur Melo and Dominik Szoboszlai, and ex-reds Ryan Babel, Christian Benteke, Philippe Coutinho and Péter Gulácsi also in action. 2018 – Emre Can won his first cap since moving to Juventus, with skipper Virgil van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum both on target as the Netherlands beat Germany 3-1 in a UEFA Nations League group game in Amsterdam. Owen Beck won his only Under-17’s cap as Wales lost 1-0 to Kazakhstan in Portugal. Ex-reds Ryan Babel and Martin Škrtel both also played in the competition that day, with Academy keeper Kai McKenzie-Lyle, Sadio Mané and future reds Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai all also in international action as Abel Xavier took charge of Mozambique. International reds on target 2014 – Luis Suárez bagged his first two goals for Uruguay as a Barcelona player as they won a friendly 3-0 in Oman, while Xherdan Shaqiri bagged his last goal while playing for Bayern München as Switzerland won a European Championships qualifier 4-0 in San Marino. No more silent knight for England 1971 - Chris Lawler won his fourth and final cap for England as they won a European Championships qualifier 3-2 in Switzerland. 2-1 again 1906 - We lost 2-1 at The Wednesday, our fifth defeat by that score in consecutive fixtures that season. He made 24 appearances, staying at the Britannia Stadium for the rest of the season as the Potters narrowly missed out on promotion to the First Division. The road to Germany 2004 - Ex-red Michael Owen struck the only goal of England’s win in Azerbaijan, with future red Joe Cole also playing. Future red Robbie Keane bagged both goals, including a penalty, as the Republic of Ireland beat the Faroe Islands 2-0 in another qualifier, with Steve Finnan also featuring. Also in World Cup qualifying action that day were Alou Diarra, Jerzy Dudek, Sami Hyypiä, John Arne Riise, future reds Craig Bellamy, Dirk Kuyt, Javier Mascherano, Christian Poulsen, Fernando Torres and Andriy Voronin and ex-red Paul Jones, with Alex Manninger winning his last cap as a Bologna player as Austria drew 3-3 in Northern Ireland. A rare defeat 1993 - Ronnie Whelan and ex-reds Ray Houghton and Steve Staunton all featured as the Republic of Ireland suffered their first competitive defeat at Lansdowne Road for eight years, losing 3-1 to Spain in a World Cup qualifier. Stig Inge Bjørnebye, Ronnie Rosenthal, ex-red Jim Magilton and future reds Brad Friedel, Paul Ince and Gary McAllister all also played for their countries, with Gérard Houllier in charge as Ronnie Rosenthal’s Israel beat France 3-2 at the Stade de France. Starting out and finishing 1981 - Paul Stewart signed as a professional for Blackpool. He played 225 times for the Seasiders, scoring 62 times before being sold to Manchester City in March 1987. His greatest moment came when he scored Tottenham Hotspur’s equaliser in the 1991 FA Cup Final, but he failed to shine at Anfield. 1986 - Reserves winger John Jeffers turned pro at Anfield. He did not break into our first-team, but went on to carve out a career with Port Vale and Stockport County. 2008 - Ex-reds centre-half Stéphane Henchoz announced his retirement from football. 2022 – Midfielder Elijah Dixon-Bonner signed for Queens Park Rangers after his contract with the reds had expired in the summer. Other reds games 1979 – We won 2-1 at Ipswich Town to leave the Blues bottom of the table. Alan Hunter put through his own net, with David Johnson also on target. 1928 – Gordon Hodgson and Jimmy McDougall struck as we came from behind to beat Newcastle United 2-1 in L4 as forward Billy Millar played his third and last game for the club. Stevie in the running 2005 - Steven Gerrard was named among the thirty players short-listed for the FIFA World Player of the Year award, which was eventually retained by Ronaldinho. Papa again 2016 – Ex-reds centre-forward Christian Benteke became a father for the second time, this time to a daughter called Nylah. -
Goalscoring debutants 1946 - Forward Cyril Done scored on his official reds debut as we were held 1-1 by Charlton Athletic at home. He had also scored in the previous first-class reds game in which he had played - seven years before, just before the outbreak of war when the season was cancelled. Future reds boss Don Welsh netted for the visitors, having previously done so against us before the Second World War! 1907 - Harold Fitzpatrick scored on his reds debut to hand us a 1-0 home victory over Sunderland in another top-flight encounter as outside-right Arthur Goddard played his 200th reds game, while left-half Samuel Hignett made his only senior appearance for the club. He became the club’s then youngest ever player when he debuted at Hull City in May 2010 aged just sixteen years and 250 days. He was sold to Queens Park Rangers in August 2014, scoring twice in 39 outings before moving on to Nottingham Forest in June 2018. 2006 – Midfielder Afolami Onanuga was born. He joined the reds as an Under-11, turning pro in November 2023. The very beginning 1892 - We played our first ever game, beating reigning Midland League champions Rotherham Town 7-1 in a friendly that kicked off at Anfield at 5.30pm on a Thursday evening. 1894 - We played our first ever First Division game, drawing 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers, with Harry Bradshaw putting the reds in front before Coombe Hall equalised for the home side. Birth of the Kop 1906 - Joe Hewitt bagged the only goal of our game against Stoke at Anfield as the Kop stand was used for the first time, in scorching temperatures, although it was not yet known by that name. Michael Owen grabbed a hat-trick, with Steven Gerrard nabbing his first international goal and Emile Heskey also on target. Dietmar Hamann was on the losing side, while Nick Barmby, Jamie Carragher and ex-red Steve McManaman all also appeared. He played 468 times in eighteen seasons at Anfield, winning two League titles before joining Belfast Celtic as Player/Manager in June 1934. Crossing the park 1962 - Winger Johnny Morrissey was sold to Everton for £10,000. He had signed on as a professional in April 1957, netting six times in 37 reds games. He scored fifty goals in 314 appearances for the Blues, helping them to two League titles. He retired from the game in June 2008. 2017 – Keeper David Martin signed for Millwall, only making one senior appearance in his first campaign with the Lions. 2020 – Young keeper Kai McKenzie-Lyle signed for Cambridge United, having been released by the reds three months earlier. On the same day, centre-half Rhys Williams signed a new contract while Chief Commercial Officer Billy Hogan took over as Chief Executive Officer. Other reds games 1984 – Queens Park Rangers held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Ronnie Whelan was on target, with Paul Walsh having two goals disallowed. 1981 – Middlesbrough left L4 with a point. David Shearer bagged one of his four goals against the reds, with Phil Neal equalising from the spot. 1956 – We beat Grimsby Town 3-2 in a home Second Division encounter. Louis Bimpson struck twice, with Alan Arnell also on target as Bob Crosbie netted a brace for the visitors. 1954 – Plymouth Argyle held us to a 3-3 draw in the Second Division at Anfield. Records in the League Cup 1994 - Ian Rush scored his sixteenth and final reds hat-trick in his 600th reds game as we won 3-1 at Blackburn Rovers in a Fourth Round tie. Chris Sutton’s late consolation was one of his seven strikes against the reds. On the same day, future red Sami Hyypiä played for Finland in their 2-0 friendly defeat in Spain. 1988 - John Durnin made his third and final reds appearance, as a substitute, as we lost 4-1 at West Ham United at the same stage of the competition, our worst ever League Cup defeat. Future red Paul Ince opened the scoring with a spectacular volley, before heading in a second. John Aldridge converted a penalty, with Steve Staunton then heading into his own net, unchallenged. A Tony Gale free-kick completed the scoring. Births and death 2021 – Ray Kennedy died. After five successful years as a forward with Arsenal, Bob Paisley converted him into a left-sided midfielder following his club record £180,000 arrival as Bill Shankly’s last signing in July 1974. He won six League titles, three European Cups, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields before joining John Toshack’s Swansea City in January 1982, striking 72 times in 393 reds games. 1970 - Phil Babb was born in Lambeth. He struck once in 170 games for the reds following his club record £3.6m capture from Coventry City in September 1994, also a then British record fee for a defender. He joined Sporting Clube de Portugal after six years at Anfield. 1972 - Abel Xavier was born in Nampula in Mozambique. He crossed Stanley Park for £800,000 in January 2002 and netted twice in 21 reds games, of which we only lost three. His next club was Hannover 96 in Germany, who he joined in February 2004 after being released by the reds. 1997 – Keeper Kai McKenzie-Lyle was born in London. He joined the reds in August 2018 but was released in June 2020 and is now with Welling United. Most recently 2019 – Keeper Alisson Becker was dismissed for handling outside his area late on when we were leading Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 at Anfield thanks to a pair of Virgil van Dijk headers. Lewis Dunk beat Adrián from the resulting free-kick, but the game ended 2-1. 2005 - Momo Sissoko was sent off as we won 2-0 at Sunderland thanks to goals from Luis García and Steven Gerrard. This ensured we had gone the whole month of November without conceding a goal, a club first. 2003 - We entertained Birmingham City. Steven Gerrard scored from the spot just a minute after Mikael Forssell had opened the scoring for the visitors, before Harry Kewell netted our 150th League goal against the Blues, which was also his fiftieth League goal in England. Emile Heskey then scored a spectacular strike, his hundredth club goal, against his future employers as we won 3-1. Twice against the Canaries We have twice hosted Norwich City, winning on both occasions. 1982 – Mark Lawrenson and David Fairclough struck as we won a League Cup Fourth Round tie 2-0, with left-back Alan Kennedy playing his 200th reds game as Bob Paisley took charge for the 500th time. 1991 – Jan Mølby scored his fiftieth reds goal with Ray Houghton also on the scoresheet in a 2-1 League victory. New arrivals 1951 – Left-winger Mervyn Jones, one of the smallest players to ever play for the club at just five feet four inches, signed from Bangor City. However, he moved on to Southampton in July 1953 after just five reds outings. 2000 – Forward Daniel Sjölund signed from West Ham United for £1m. He never so much as made a first-team match-day squad, moving on to Swedish side Djurgårdens IF in January 2004. Beating the Villains 1901 - We beat Aston Villa at Anfield, with Sam Raybould grabbing the only goal of the game. Inside-forward Charlie Satterthwaite played his 45th and final reds game. 1912 - Donald McKinlay struck as we won another First Division meeting 2-0 in L4, with our other score coming from a Freddie Miles own goal. Derby joy 1938 – We beat Everton 2-1 in the second replay of our Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round tie at Anfield, with E. Patterson and Ron Jones netting for the reds. Keech’s farewell 1895 – Half-back Bill Keech played his sixth and final reds game as we lost 2-0 at Leicester Fosse, on our way to claiming the Second Division title. On the move 1989 - Nigel Spackman was signed for Rangers by Graeme Souness, arriving from Queens Park Rangers for £500,000. He spent three years at Ibrox, helping them to three straight League titles. 1927 – Scottish centre-half David Pratt left the reds for Bury. He had played 84 times after signing from Bradford City in January 1923, scoring just once and being known for his long throw-ins. Wark walks 1996 - John Wark played his final professional game as Ipswich Town lost 3-0 at Tranmere Rovers. Ex-red John Aldridge netted a brace for Rovers in that game. Bosses standing down 2010 – Chairman Martin Broughton left the club, having successfully completed the sale of the reds to New England Sports Ventures. 2001 - Mark Wright resigned as Manager of Third Division Oxford United after being suspended for alleged racial abuse of a referee. 2007 - Roy Hodgson’s contract as Manager of Finland expired. He had narrowly failed to lead them to their first major championships, but turned down the offer to stay in charge. A friendly win 1960 - We beat French side Nantes Atlantique 5-1 at Anfield in the second leg of the Friendship Cup, with Jimmy Harrower netting two penalties and Roger Hunt, Dave Hickson and Johnny Wheeler all on target. We claimed the trophy 7-1 on aggregate. Kenny back in action 1987 - Reds boss Kenny Dalglish stepped back onto the field, turning out at Parkhead for Davie Provan’s testimonial match between Celtic and Nottingham Forest, won by the visitors 3-1, despite the scores being level when the King had entered the fray! Other reds games 1997 – Steve McManaman bagged the only goal of our trip to Arsenal. 1985 – Chelsea held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Jan Mølby scored from the spot late on, but there was still time for Pat Nevin to equalise 1974 – Kevin Keegan was on target as we drew 1-1 at Coventry City. 1968 – Roger Hunt netted the only goal of our visit to Nottingham Forest. 1963 – We beat Burnley 2-0 in L4. Ian St. John struck before Roger Hunt converted from the spot, the only penalty he ever scored for the reds. 1957 – Billy Liddell struck as we drew a Second Division fixture 1-1 at Sheffield United. 1946 – We lost 3-2 at Blackpool, with Jack Balmer and Cyril Done both netting. Jimmy McIntosh scored the first of his six goals against the reds, with Stan Mortensen bagging the first of his eleven. Jimmy Blair was also on the scoresheet as we remained top of the table. 1935 – Fred Howe scored as we lost 2-1 at Portsmouth. Cliff Parker scored one of his five goals past us, with Scot Symon also on target. 1929 – We lost 2-1 at Sheffield Wednesday, with Gordon Hodgson on the scoresheet. Mark Hooper bagged one of his eight past us, with Alf Strange also scoring. At the World Cup 2022 - Alexis Mac Allister bagged his first goal for Argentina and only one as a Brighton & Hove Albion player as they beat Poland 2-0 in a World Cup Finals group game in Qatar. On the same day, Ibrahima Konaté featured as France lost 1-0 to Tunisia. Trent off 2014 – Trent Alexander-Arnold was dismissed as England Under-17’s drew 2-2 with Brazil in a friendly in Florida. Also in international action 1992 – Future red Bjørn Tore Kvarme played for Norway Under-21’s as they beat Malaysia 2-0 in Kuala Lumpur. 2011 – Future red Mohamed Salah featured as Egypt lost an Africa Cup of Nations group game 1-0 to Ivory Coast in Morocco. 2016 – Future red Ozan Kabak played for Turkey Under-17’s as they lost 4-2 to Brazil in Florida.
