The greatest performance ever 1988 - We trounced Nottingham Forest 5-0, just four days after we had beaten them 2-1 in the FA Cup Semi-final. It was a stunning display that the legendary Tom Finney described as “the greatest performance ever”. John Aldridge bagged a brace, to add to goals from Ray Houghton, Gary Gillespie and Peter Beardsley. Bruce Grobbelaar was playing his 400th reds game. 1929 - We also netted five, winning 5-2 at Derby County, with Henry Race and John Clark both bagging braces, and Gordon Hodgson also on the scoresheet. Harry Bedford struck two of his nine goals agains

Redders off the mark 1991 - Jamie Redknapp scored his first reds goal as we held Southampton to a 1-1 League draw at The Dell. Alan Shearer had put the home side ahead with the first of his eight goals against the reds. In comes Igor 2000 - Igor Bišcan signed from Dinamo Zagreb for £5.5m. The big Croat helped us to the Worthington Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield in 2001, and the Worthington Cup again two years later, as well as playing a key role in our Champions League triumph in 2005. He left for Panathinaikos in July 2005 after three goals in 118 reds games. 1897 – R

Happy birthdays 1937 - Right-half Gordon Milne was born in Preston. He played 282 times for us after signing for a club record £16,000 from Preston North End in August 1960, netting eighteen times and winning the League title twice, as well as the Second Division championship before joining Blackpool in May 1967. He also won fourteen England caps, and later successfully managed Coventry City and Leicester City. 1991 – Italian forward Fabio Borini was born in Bentivoglio. Michael’s golden ball 2002 - We beat Derby County 2-0 at Anfield, with double goalscorer Michael Owen being presented with the Ballon d’Or trophy for European Football of the Year before the match. A minute’s silence was also observed before kick-off, in memory of the bereaved and survivors of the Hillsborough disaster. Steven Gerrard made his hundredth League appearance in this game. On the same day, young reserves forward John Miles left for Stoke City on a free transfer. He only made one senior appearance for the Potters before moving on to Crewe Alexandra after being released at the

Nando at the treble 2008 - Fernando Torres scored a hat-trick to pass twenty goals for the season after we had fallen behind against Middlesbrough at Anfield. We went on to win 3-2, with Jérémie Aliadière sent off for the visitors for slapping Javier Mascherano. This meant we became the first team ever to score hat-tricks in all of the League, FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League in the same season. Tuncay Şanlı and future red Stewart Downing netted for the visitors. Daniel again 2014 - Daniel Sturridge scored in his seventh consecutive League game as we eventually beat Swansea Cit

Farewell Crazy Horse 2004 - Red legend Emlyn Hughes died aged 57. ‘Crazy Horse’ signed from Blackpool for a club record £65,000 in February 1967 and played 665 times in his twelve years at Anfield, netting 49 times and winning two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers for £90,000 in August 1979. His greatest season was probably 1976/77 when he captained the side to within a whisker of a unique treble, as well as being voted the Football Writers’ Player of the Year. Legends farewells 19

Goalscoring debutants 1946 - Forward Cyril Done scored on his official reds debut as we were held 1-1 by Charlton Athletic at home. He had also scored in the previous first-class reds game in which he had played - seven years before, just before the outbreak of war when the season was cancelled. Future reds boss Don Welsh netted for the visitors, having previously done so against us before the Second World War! 1907 - Harold Fitzpatrick scored on his reds debut to hand us a 1-0 home victory over Sunderland in another top-flight encounter as outside-right Arthur Goddard played his 200th red

In comes Razor 1987 - Ray Houghton signed from Oxford United for £825,000. He went on to strike 38 times in 202 reds games, helping us to two League titles, two FA Cups and the FA Charity Shield in his five years at Anfield. He was sold to Aston Villa for £900,000 in July 1992, as Graeme Souness tried to reduce the number of non-Englishmen in the squad, to comply with UEFA regulations for European competition. In comes Hugh 1894 - Centre-forward Hugh Henderson signed from Third Lanark. He only made two appearances for the reds, both convincing defeats. A new competition 1960 -
