Double reds debutants 1974 - Reds legends Terry McDermott and Phil Neal both made their reds debuts as we held Everton to a goalless draw at Goodison Park. 1907 – Winger Harold Uren debuted as we drew 1-1 with Manchester City at Hyde Road, with inside-left Bill McPherson on target. Four for Jack 1946 - Jack Balmer bagged all four goals in our 4-1 win at Derby County. This was the second of his three hat-tricks in consecutive games. His third goal was his fiftieth reds strike, while Raich Carter’s late consolation was the last of his six strikes against the reds. Billy’s record 1957 – Billy Liddell played his 431st League game for the reds as we lost a Second Division encounter 3-1 at Ipswich Town, a new club record. He went on to make 492 League appearances for the club in total. Johnny Wheeler struck for the reds, with Ted Phillips bagging the first two of his five goals past us and Tommy Garneys also netting. Against the Owls We have twice faced Sheffield Wednesday in First Division encounters on this day in history, without being beaten. 1968 - We won 2-1 at Hillsborough with Chris Lawler and Ian Callaghan on target. 1986 - Ian Rush netted a minute after Lee Chapman bagged one of his six strikes against the reds as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. In comes Kevin 1984 – Scottish midfielder Kevin MacDonald signed from Leicester City for £400,000. He played 64 reds games, scoring five times, helping us to the League and FA Cup double in 1986, with skipper Alan Hansen calling him “far and away our most influential player.” He moved to Coventry City in June 1989 after a number of loan spells away from Anfield while recovering from a broken leg. Future red James Milner converted a penalty past Nikolay Mihaylov for England Under-21’s on the same day. 2003 – Future red Glen Johnson made his senior international bow as Danny Murphy won his ninth and last cap, with David James winning his final cap as a West Ham United player, and his 21st in total, in England’s 3-2 friendly defeat by Denmark at Old Trafford. Joe Cole bagged his first international goal as a Chelsea player, with Emile Heskey also featuring, while Jerzy Dudek also played in a friendly that day. 2022 – Calvin Ramsay won his first senior cap for Steve Clarke’s Scotland as Andy Robertson skippered them to a 2-1 friendly defeat in Türkiye, with Ozan Kabak on target for the first time for his country as he featured for the first time since joining TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Ex-red Dejan Lovren and future red Alexis Mac Allister also featured in friendlies that day ahead of the World Cup Finals. 2002 – Future red Jermaine Pennant made his debut for England Under-18’s in their 3-2 friendly defeat of Belgium in Bradford. 2010 – Future red Steven Caulker made his debut for England Under-21’s in their 2-0 defeat to Germany in Wiesbaden, with Martin Kelly also in action. 1994 - Steve McManaman and Neil Ruddock both played their first senior internationals as England beat Nigeria 1-0 at Wembley. It was to be Ruddock’s only full cap, while McManaman went on to win 37. John Barnes, Rob Jones and ex-red Peter Beardsley all also played. 1988 - Future red Michael Thomas made his England debut as they were held to a 1-1 friendly draw in Saudi Arabia. Peter Beardsley also played. John Aldridge, Ray Houghton and Steve Staunton all featured as the Republic of Ireland lost a World Cup qualifier 2-0 in Spain on the same day. Red endings 1935 – South African forward Lance Carr bagged his eighth and final reds goal in our 3-1 top-flight defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Tom Smalley bagged a brace, with Billy Wrigglesworth also on target for the home side. 1929 – Bill Murray struck his only reds goal as we won 3-2 at Aston Villa. Jim Smith also netted with Tommy Mort putting through his own net for us. George Brown netted one of his nine goals against the reds, with Joe Beresford scoring one of his four past us. 1949 – Future red Sammy Smyth scored his last goal for Ireland as they were thumped 9-2 by England at Maine Road in a British International Championships game that also counted as a World Cup qualifier. 2021 – Forward Louis Bimpson died. He scored 39 goals in his 102 first-team appearances after signing on a free transfer from Burscough in January 1953. He moved on to Blackburn Rovers in November 1959. Red birth 1964 – Forward David West was born. He signed from his hometown club Dorchester Town for £15,000 in March 1983. He made it to the first-team bench on two occasions without ever making a senior appearance, moving on to Torquay United in September 1985. Up against Rushie 1996 - We won 2-0 at Leeds United thanks to goals from Neil Ruddock nabbing his twelfth and last reds goal and Steve McManaman also on target. We kept our first clean sheet in two months, while Ian Rush suffered his fourteenth game in a Leeds shirt without finding the net and was booked to boot. Thumping the Baggies 1985 – Transfer-listed Paul Walsh set up Steve Nicol, Jan Mølby and Mark Lawrenson to score before himself netting as we beat West Bromwich Albion 4-1 in a top-flight fixture, after Garth Crooks had headed the Baggies in front, their most recent Anfield goal prior to April 2012, one of his four goals against the reds. Ex-red Graeme Souness was in the crowd for this game. Scottish fame 2008 - Billy Liddell and Ian St. John were both inducted into Scotland’s Hall of Fame. Liddell had bagged eight goals in 29 outings for his country, while the Saint netted nine times while winning 21 caps. Jari at the double 1994 - Ajax’s Jari Litmanen grabbed a brace in Finland’s 5-0 European Championships qualifying thumping of the Faroe Islands in Helsinki. Meanwhile, Frode Kippe won his eighteenth and final cap for Norway Under-21’s, playing alongside future red John Arne Riise as they lost a European Championships qualifying play-off 4-0 in Spain. 2004 - Scott Carson won his eighth and final England Under-21’s cap as a Leeds United player as they lost a friendly 1-0 in Spain, with future red Glen Johnson dismissed while skippering the side and fellow future reds Stewart Downing and James Milner also in action. More internationals in action 1932 – Future red Ernie Blenkinsop played for England in their goalless British International Championships meeting with Wales in Wrexham. 1966 – Roger Hunt appeared in England’s 5-1 European Championships qualifying thumping of Wales at Wembley. 1982 – Future reds John Barnes, Steve McMahon, Barry Venison and Paul Walsh all featured for England Under-21’s in their 1-0 defeat in Greece in a European Championships qualifier. 2015 – Future red Dominic Solanke played as England Under-21’s beat Switzerland 3-1 in Brighton. 2020 – Future red Ibrahima Konaté played for France Under-21’s as they beat Switzerland 3-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Caen. 2021 – Ex-red Rhian Brewster captained England Under-21’s as they lost a friendly 3-2 in Georgia, despite having been sent off in his previous appearance at this level. Happy birthday Paddy 1973 - Patrik Berger was born in Prague. He struck 35 times in 196 reds games after his £3.25m capture from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund in September 1996 following a successful Euro ‘96 with the Czech Republic, coming off the bench to help us claim the FA Cup, UEFA Cup and FA Charity Shield in 2001. However, he was later dogged by persistent knee trouble, and allowed to join Premiership new-boys Portsmouth on a free transfer in June 2003. 1981 – Sports Therapist Iván Ortega was born. He joined the reds in the summer of 2009 from Celta de Vigo, but moved on to Chelsea in July 2011. Red centurions 2007 - Rafael Benítez took charge of the reds for the 200th time as we struggled to break down Fulham at Anfield, before Fernando Torres struck a late opener. Steven Gerrard then converted a penalty to secure a 2-0 victory, Rafa’s 115th to date. 1928 – Outside-right Dick Edmed played his hundredth reds game as we won 1-0 at Portsmouth, with forward Bill Salisbury nabbing his first reds goal. Centre-half David Davidson was sent off late in the second half, but we hung on for our first victory at Fratton Park. League Cup ends 1998 - Roy Evans took charge, jointly, of his last ever game as reds boss as we were beaten 3-1 at Anfield by Tottenham Hotspur in a Fourth Round League Cup tie. Steffen Iversen and ex-red John Scales put the visitors two up inside twenty minutes, with Allan Nielsen adding a third after an hour. Michael Owen netted our late consolation. 1981 - Kevin Sheedy struck his second and final reds goal in our 4-1 defeat of Middlesbrough in a Third Round tie, with our other goals coming from Ian Rush and a David Johnson brace. Fabinho opened the scoring with a long-range strike with Mohamed Salah nodding in a second. Sadio Mané headed in after the break, with Bernardo Silva pulling a goal back late on. 2010 – We were held to a 1-1 draw at Wigan Athletic, with Fernando Torres firing us into an early lead. However, Hugo Rodallega levelled after the break with Steven Gerrard striking the crossbar late on. Carl Medjani won his first cap as a Sivasspor player in Algeria’s 3-0 World Cup qualifying defeat of Nigeria. Sadio Mané, Divock Origi, Ben Woodburn, future reds Alisson Becker, Wataru Endō and Dominik Szoboszlai, and ex-red Joe Allen also featured in internationals that day. 2021 – Terence Miles debuted for England Under-18’s as they lost a friendly 3-2 to the Netherlands in Spain. 2001 - Danny Murphy became the 54th Liverpool player to represent the full England team when he debuted in a 1-1 friendly draw with Sweden at Old Trafford, coming on as a substitute for Nicky Butt. Murphy was joined by three fellow reds, as Jamie Carragher played 85 minutes at left-back, Emile Heskey started alongside Kevin Phillips in attack and was replaced by Teddy Sheringham in the 58th minute, with Robbie Fowler coming on for Phillips at the same time. Robbie was winning his 22nd cap, and final one as a reds player. On the same day, future red Christian Poulsen won his first cap for Denmark as they were held to a 1-1 friendly draw by the Netherlands in Copenhagen. Meanwhile, Milan Baroš and Vladimír Šmicer both appeared for the Czech Republic as they lost 1-0 in a World Cup play-off in Belgium. This left Baroš needing just one more cap at full international level before he could be granted a work permit to join the reds. Pat Gallacher netted a treble, the first of his six goals against the reds, with Benny Yorston scoring the first of his five. Signing on 1893 - Forward Harry Bradshaw signed from Northwich Victoria. He struck 51 times in 138 reds games, helping us to the Second Division title on two occasions, and winning an England cap in his five years at Anfield, so becoming the first ever international red. He moved on to Southern League side Tottenham Hotspur in May 1898. 2020 – Midfielder Tom Hill signed a new contract, having been with the reds since Under-6’s level. On the same day, ex-reds right-back Nathaniel Clyne re-signed for Crystal Palace. He had turned pro with the Eagles in October 2008, netting once in 137 games before moving on to Southampton in July 2012. He returned to Selhurst Park after being released by the reds in June 2020. Court drama again 2010 – The club won a second case in the High Court against current owners George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks. Thumping the Rams 1978 - We trounced an injury-hit Derby County 5-0 at Anfield in a First Division fixture with Ray Kennedy and Kenny Dalglish each netting twice, after David Johnson had grabbed the only goal of the first half. Suspended 1895 – Centre-forward George Allan was suspended for eight matches by the Scottish FA, four months after arriving from Leith Athletic in a £100 deal. This was due to him having also signed for St. Bernard’s at the same time as moving to Anfield! Goalscoring debutants 1946 - Forward Cyril Done scored on his official reds debut as we were held 1-1 by Charlton Athletic at home. He had also scored in the previous first-class reds game in which he had played - seven years before, just before the outbreak of war when the season was cancelled. Future reds boss Don Welsh netted for the visitors, having previously done so against us before the Second World War! 1907 - Harold Fitzpatrick scored on his reds debut to hand us a 1-0 home victory over Sunderland in another top-flight encounter as outside-right Arthur Goddard played his 200th reds game, while left-half Samuel Hignett made his only senior appearance for the club. Fastest treble 2022 – Mohamed Salah scored the fastest hat-trick in UEFA Champions League history, taking just six minutes and twelve seconds to net three times in our groups stage game at Rangers. Scott Arfield gave the home side the lead, but we romped home as 7-1 winners with Roberto Firmino netting either side of the break before Darwin Núñez scored. Salah then arrived from the bench to grab his treble, with Harvey Elliott completing the scoring. Another record for Michael 2002 - Michael Owen scored his nineteenth England goal, more than any other red in history until it was equalled by Steven Gerrard in August 2010, in his 43rd game as they beat Slovakia 2-1 in their Euro 2004 qualifier in Bratislava. Europe’s best 1978 – The reds were named as European team of the year at a ceremony in Paris, having retained the European Cup at Wembley earlier that year. Reds come into the world 1867 - Right-half Rab Howell was born in Sheffield. He went on to become the only true Romany to play for England, playing 67 reds games without scoring after signing from Sheffield United for £200 in April 1898. He left for Preston North End in June 1901. 1897 - Forward Sam Bowyer was born in Northwich. He signed from Earlestown in March 1907, grabbing sixteen goals in 48 reds games before leaving for Bedminster in 1912. 1987 - Former reserves attacking midfielder Besian Idrizaj was born in Baden in Austria. He was actually a Kosovan-Albanian and was voted the best young player in the Austrian equivalent of the Championship shortly before moving to England. He signed from Linzer ASK for an initial £190,000 in August 2005 and made his first senior appearance in our friendly at Crewe Alexandra back in July 2006, netting a treble at Wrexham a year later, but failed to make the first-team squad, sadly dying aged just 22 in May 2010. Sammy the champion 1982 - Sammy Lee skippered England Under-21’s as they lost 3-2 to West Germany in Bremen in the second leg of the Final of the European Championships. Mixed fortunes against the Mancs We have faced Manchester United three times on this day in history. 1996 - David Beckham netted the only goal of the game at Old Trafford. 1968 - We beat the European Champions 2-0 at Anfield when Ian St. John and Alun Evans struck. 1895 - We thumped Newton Heath as they were then known 7-1 at home, with two apiece from Frank Becton, Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw and Fred Geary, and a goal from Jimmy Ross. New defenders 1974 - Phil Neal signed from Northampton Town for £66,000. He made 650 reds appearances, netting 59 times while becoming our most decorated player of all time, including four European Cups, eight League titles, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, four League Cups and four FA Charity Shields. 1996 - Jamie Carragher signed professional terms at Anfield. He made a total of 737 reds appearances before retiring in the summer of 2013, in a multitude of positions, and is ranked number two in the club’s all-time appearance holders list. He netted just five times as he helped us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, three League Cups and two FA Charity Shields. 1987 - Reserves defender Brian Mooney joined Preston North End on loan, later signing for them permanently for a £25,000 fee. He only ever played one senior reds game, as a substitute for Jim Beglin in a League Cup win at Fulham in October 1986, only managing to net 26 goals in 128 appearances while at Deepdale, winning their Player of the Year award in 1988/89 as they missed out on promotion to the Second Division, then moving back into the top flight to sign for Sunderland for £225,000 in 1991. Tim Cahill was sent off late on for a challenge on Xabi Alonso. 2014 – We were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield as Steven Gerrard scored in the League for the sixteenth consecutive season, a new club record. Phil Jagielka equalised for the visitors with a wonder strike from distance in stoppage time. Three off in the derby 1999 - Sander Westerveld, Steven Gerrard and Everton’s Francis Jeffers were all sent off in our 1-0 derby defeat at Anfield. Steve Staunton went in goal for the final minutes, keeping a clean sheet and saving from future red Abel Xavier. Kevin Campbell netted the only goal of the game in the fourth minute, one of his four goals against us. Losing the European Cup 1978 - We lost our grip on the European Cup, being held to a goalless draw at Anfield by League champions Nottingham Forest, with ex-red Larry Lloyd dominant in the visitors’ defence. He struck 128 times in 219 games, moving on to Bury in August 1914. 1987 – Left-winger Peter Kippax died. He left his hometown club Burnley to join the reds as an amateur in 1948, having helped Great Britain to fourth place in the Olympics football competition that summer. The central midfielder joined League Two outfit Accrington Stanley in August 2008, having featured in both of our recent victorious FA Youth Cup campaigns, but failed to break into the first–team squad. 1948 – Half-back Bill Keech died. He played just six Second Division games in late 1895, having signed from Barnsley St. Peter’s that October, helping us to claim the title that season. He later played as a forward for Leicester Fosse, before returning to the half-back line with Queens Park Rangers’ first professional team in the Southern League. 2003 – Inside-forward Harold Jones died. However, his honours as reds boss between December 1959 and July 1974 included three League titles, two FA Cups, UEFA Cup and the Second Division championship. 1936 - Centre-half John Nicholson was born in Liverpool. He signed as a professional in January 1957, but only made one senior appearance before joining Port Vale in August 1961, playing over 200 games for them. 2001 – Midfielder Jake Cain was born in Wigan. He signed as a professional in September 2019, making his senior debut in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay against Shrewsbury Town in February 2020. Spurs stuffed 1978 - Tottenham Hotspur suffered their worst ever Anfield defeat, despite including their new World Cup winners, Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricky Villa. Kenny Dalglish and substitute David Johnson both grabbed a brace, added to by Ray Kennedy and a twice-taken Phil Neal penalty, before Terry McDermott rounded off a brilliant team move to make it 7-0. Into the League 1893 - We played our first ever game in the Football League, winning 2-0 at Middlesbrough Ironopolis. Forward Malcolm McVean scored our first ever League goal after an hour, with centre-half Joe McQue nabbing the other. James Henderson played his only senior reds game, while winger Patrick Gordon and forward Jimmy Stott also made their debuts in this game. This was also the first ever League game staged at the Paradise Ground. A busy day 2013 – A whole host of transfers took place on deadline day, with forward Fabio Borini joining Sunderland on loan, while ex-reds left-back Andrea Dossena also signed for the Black Cats on a free transfer from Rafael Benítez’s SSC Napoli. Two centre-halves arrived at Anfield, with Mamadou Sakho arriving from Paris Saint-Germain for £15m and Tiago Ilori signing from Sporting Clube de Portugal for £7m. He struck seven times in nineteen reds games after signing as a professional in May 1957, as we struggled in the Second Division. 1994 - John Scales signed from Wimbledon for £3.5m. He struck four times in 94 games in his two years at Anfield, before joining Tottenham Hotspur for £2.6m in December 1996. On the same day, Paul Stewart joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan. He scored twice in ten appearances for Wolves, and later joined Burnley and Sunderland on loan, having slipped out of the first team picture at Anfield. 2014- Cameroon-born centre-back Stephen Sama left the reds to sign for VfB Stuttgart having failed to make a senior appearance since arriving from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund in July 2009. 2015 – The capture of Brazilian midfielder Allan Rodrigues de Souza from Internacional for a reported £500,000 was announced, with his loan departure to Finnish club Seinäjoen Jalkapallokerho also revealed on the same day. 2019 – Winger Ryan Kent was sold to Rangers for £7m after a successful loan spell in which he had struck six times in 43 appearances. On the same day, keeper Shamal George joined Marine on loan and forward Bobby Duncan was sold to Fiorentina for €2m. Meanwhile, Martin Škrtel was released after less than a month with Atalanta and signed for İstanbul Başakşehir on the same day. Nice one Cyril 1939 - Cyril Done scored the only goal of the game on his reds debut at home to Chelsea, the day after Germany invaded Poland, and the day before Britain declared war, which resulted in the cancellation of the football season, so he had to wait until October 1946 to make his official reds bow. Out-gunned We have faced Arsenal four times in top-flight matches on this day in history, without securing victory. 1905 - We lost 3-1 at Woolwich Arsenal with Bobby Robinson bagging our consolation, and Sam Raybould missing a penalty in our first game of the season. However, late goals from Gary Speed and one of Alan Shearer’s eight past us levelled the match. 1953 - We also faced the Geordies, leaving St. James’ Park on the wrong end of a 4-0 scoreline, with the legendary Jackie Milburn and Vic Keeble adding to the last two of Robert Mitchell’s eight strikes against the reds. He was only with South Liverpool for three days while the reds negotiated his £600 transfer to Third Lanark. 1955 – Future reds centre-forward Dave Hickson signed for Aston Villa from Everton for £17,500, netting just once in twelve games before moving to Huddersfield Town for £16,000 two months later. 2011 – Ex-reds defender Stephen Wright signed for Hartlepool United, featuring eleven times for the Monkey Hangers. Death of a true gentleman 2001 - Joe Fagan died aged eighty. He joined the coaching staff at Anfield in 1958, becoming Assistant Manager under Bob Paisley in 1974, before moving into the hot seat himself nine years later. In his first season as boss, he led the club to a unique treble of League title, European Cup and League Cup as we won 71 of his 131 games in charge. He retired in the aftermath of the Heysel tragedy in May 1985. 1958 – He was appointed Assistant Trainer under Phil Taylor’s management, replacing Dicky Dorsett. 2019 – Noel White died. He had resigned from the Board in October 2006 after leaking critical stories of Rafael Benítez’s rotation policy to the press. He had been on the Board for twenty years, including a spell as Chairman between 1990 and 1991. Final disappointments 2002 - Dietmar Hamann and ex-red Christian Ziege appeared for Germany in the World Cup Final as they went down 2-0 against Brazil in Yokohama. Hamann thus became only the second red to appear in the biggest game in world football, after ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt in 1966. 2013 – Ex-reds Álvaro Arbeloa and Fernando Torres played as Brazil beat Spain 3-0 in the Confederations Cup Final in Rio de Janeiro. On the same day, Luis Suárez and ex-red Alberto Aquilani both converted penalties in a shoot-out as Italy beat Uruguay 3-2 after their Third Place Play-off in Salvador had ended 2-2 after ninety and 120 minutes. Michael goes supernova 1998 - Michael Owen found worldwide fame as he scored ‘that’ goal for England against Argentina in their World Cup Second Round meeting in Saint-Étienne. He had already won England a penalty, and later himself converted one of the spot-kicks in the eventual shoot-out that settled the tie 4-3 in Argentina’s favour after the game ended 2-2. Clubmate Paul Ince had his penalty saved. Paddy and Vlad at Wembley 1996 - Patrik Berger scored a penalty for the Czech Republic in the Euro ‘96 Final, as they lost 2-1 to Germany thanks to a brace from Oliver Bierhoff, two months before he moved to Anfield. Vladimír Šmicer won his last cap as an SK Slavia Praha player in this game, while the German side included future reds Markus Babbel and Christian Ziege. Those six words 2000 - Evertonians cried ‘betrayal’ as Nick Barmby announced his desire for a switch across Stanley Park with the words, “I want to play for Liverpool”. He arrived at Anfield three weeks later. Coaches in and out 2008 – The appointment of Mauricio Pellegrino as first-team coach was announced by the club. He had been working as a youth team coach at Valencia. He stayed with the reds until he followed Rafael Benítez to Internazionale in the summer of 2010. 2011 – The departure of Assistant Manager Sammy Lee by mutual consent was announced. He had been in that role since May 2008. 2021 - Rafael Benítez was appointed Manager of Everton. However, he was sacked the following January, with the Blues sitting in fifteenth place. Knocked out in Rome 1990 - Ray Houghton, Steve Staunton and ex-reds John Aldridge and Kevin Sheedy all featured as the Republic of Ireland lost 1-0 to Italy in their World Cup Quarter-final in the Stadio Olimpico. Javier’s last 2006 - Javier Mascherano won his last cap as a Corinthians player as Argentina drew 1-1 with Germany in their World Cup Quarter-final in Berlin, with the host nation progressing 4-2 on penalties, as fellow future red Maxi Rodríguez converted his spot-kick. 2014 – Ex-red Victor Moses played as Nigeria lost 2-0 to France in their Round of Sixteen game in Brasilia. 2015 – Ex-red Mascherano reached the Final of the Copa América in Chile as Argentina thumped Paraguay 6-1. On the same day, Tiago Ilori was on the losing side as Sweden Under-21’s beat Portugal 4-3 on penalties after their goalless European Championships Final in Prague. This was his tenth and last cap at this level. 2018 – Mascherano played as Argentina lost 4-3 to France in a Round of Sixteen tie in Kazan, with fellow ex-red Luis Suárez helping Uruguay to defeat Portugal 2-1 in Sochi at the same stage. Births and death 1917 - Forward Harry Eastham was born in Blackpool. He signed from his hometown club in February 1936 but only notched four times in 68 games for the reds in a career interrupted by the Second World War, scoring four times. He left Anfield for Tranmere Rovers in May 1948 having helped us to claim the first post-war League title. 1890 - Scottish inside-forward Tom Miller was born in Motherwell. He signed for £400 from Hamilton Academical in February 1912 and netted 56 times in his 146 games while at Anfield, helping us to our first FA Cup Final in 1914. However, he is also remembered as being one of the players caught up in the Manchester United match-rigging scandal of 1915, whom he joined in September 1920. 2006 – Northern Irish forward Trent Kone-Doherty was born in Derry. He joined the Academy in July 2022, turning pro in October 2023. 1970 - Former reds defender Barry Jones was born. The apprentice decorator signed from his hometown club Prescot Town for a £500 donation but only ever made one senior appearance for the reds, in our 1-0 UEFA Cup defeat against Kuusysi Lahti in Finland. 1938 – Scottish inside-left Hugh Morgan died. He struck seventeen times in 68 reds games after his arrival from St. Mirren in March 1898 for £200. He was top scorer in his first full season at Anfield, also winning a second senior cap while on our books before joining Blackburn Rovers in June 1900. In and out 1900 – Right-back General Stevenson left the reds to sign for Barnsley. He had signed from Padiham in December 1897, playing 22 times without scoring. 1954 – Left-back Eddie Spicer’s contract expired. He was decorated for bravery whilst serving with the Royal Marines in the Second World War, going on to score twice in 168 reds games, helping us to the first post-war League title and playing in the 1950 FA Cup Final. Unfortunately, a second broken leg ended his career in December 1953. 1952 – Glasgow-born centre-half Joe Cadden left the reds to sign for Grimsby Town after just five games since his arrival from Brooklyn Wanderers in the USA in June 1948. 1988 – Defender Nicky Tanner signed from his hometown club Bristol Rovers for £20,000. He made a total of 59 appearances for the reds under Graeme Souness, netting his only goal at Goodison Park in December 1991. Ronnie leaves the Shrimpers 1997 - Ronnie Whelan resigned as Manager of Southend United, blaming a lack of support from the board. He had been in charge at Roots Hall for two years, but was unable to keep them in the rarefied heights of the First Division. Keepers on the move 2005 - Chris Kirkland joined West Bromwich Albion on trial. He later joined them on a season-long loan, but injury once again struck, restricting him to just twelve appearances for the Baggies. 1999 - Ex-reds reserves keeper Michael Stensgaard signed for F.C. København from Southampton on a free transfer. As at Anfield, he had failed to make the first team at The Dell. 1952 – Welsh stopper Cyril Sidlow was released, joining Notts County two months later. He played 165 reds games after signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £4,000 in February 1946, helping us claim the League title in 1947 and appearing in the 1950 FA Cup Final. On the same day, right-back Bill Shepherd moved on to Wigan Athletic. He had played 58 reds games since arriving from Elm Park in December 1945. Also on target 2007 - Harry Kewell scored as Australia won a friendly 3-0 in Singapore. He also captained his country for part of the game. Meanwhile, Emiliano Insúa featured as Argentina Under-20’s were held to a goalless draw by the Czech Republic in a World Championship Finals group game in Ottawa. 2011 - Raheem Sterling netted as England Under-17’s drew 1-1 with Argentina in their World Championship Finals Round of Sixteen game in Mexico, before triumphing 4-2 on penalties, with Adam Morgan on target in the shoot-out and Brad Smith also in action. Meanwhile, Samed Yeşil netted as Germany, skippered by Emre Can, beat the USA 4-0, while fellow future red Takumi Minamino scored as Japan Under-17’s thrashed New Zealand 6-0, also at the same stage. 2019 – Mohamed Salah struck as Egypt beat Uganda 2-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations Finals group game in Cairo. Winging in and out 2006 - Ex-red Richie Partridge signed for Rotherham United. He netted four times in 36 outings for the Merry Millers in his one season with them as they were relegated to League Two. 2007 – Forward Dani Pacheco signed from Barcelona, signing pro terms the following January. He failed to score in his seventeen senior reds appearances before moving to AD Alcorcón in September 2013. 2009 – Paul Anderson was sold to Nottingham Forest for £250,000, having spent the previous campaign on loan at the City Ground. He joined the reds from Hull City in a swap deal for John Welsh in January 2006, making it onto the first-team bench just twice, both in Champions League matches. On the same day, midfielder Lee Peltier moved to Huddersfield Town on a free transfer from Yeovil Town, having struck just once in 77 outings for the Glovers. Olympian reds 1912 - Ex-reds winger Arthur Berry and future reds left-half Joe Dines both featured in the United Kingdom’s 7-0 thrashing of Hungary at the Olympics in Stockholm. The UK team went on to retain their Olympic title that year. Also in international action 1973 - Future red Kenny Dalglish won his tenth cap for Scotland as they lost 1-0 to Brazil in a friendly at Hampden Park. 2012 – Future red Mohamed Salah featured for Egypt as they drew 1-1 with the Central African Republic in an Africa Cup of Nations play-off. Also on the move 2022 – Midfielder James Balagizi signed a new contract, joining Crawley Town on loan on the same day, scoring three goals in sixteen outings. 2019 – Turkish centre-back Ozan Kabak joined Schalke 04 from VfB Stuttgart for €15m, netting three times in 42 games before joining the reds on loan in February 2021. 2018 – Left-back Jack Robinson joined Nottingham Forest from Queens Park Rangers on a free transfer. Wembley glory 1983 - We won our third consecutive League Cup, 2-1. Norman Whiteside opened the scoring for Manchester United with the first of his four goals past us before Alan Kennedy equalised at Wembley. The game went into extra time, with our fitness proving the greater as Frank Stapleton had to come back into defence with Gordon McQueen going up front, due to cramp. Ronnie Whelan, who had scored twice in the previous season’s Final, won the game for us with a beautifully curled shot past the helpless Gary Bailey. Bob Paisley was sent up to lift the trophy in his final season as boss. King Kenny’s centuries 1986 - Kenny Dalglish skippered Scotland while winning his hundredth cap in a 3-0 friendly defeat of Romania at Hampden Park. Alan Hansen and ex-red Graeme Souness both also played. On the same day, future red Mark Wright captained England as they beat the USSR 1-0 in a friendly in Tblisi. Fellow future red Peter Beardsley also played. Jan Mølby also turned out for his homeland that day, as Denmark held Northern Ireland to a 1-1 draw in another friendly, at Windsor Park. 1988 - Kenny secured another century when he led the reds to his hundredth victory as Manager, with John Aldridge and John Barnes striking in a 2-1 League defeat of Wimbledon at Anfield. He helped us to win the European Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and two FA Charity Shields in his time at Anfield. 1979 – Brazilian left-back Fábio Aurélio was born in São Carlos. He arrived on a Bosman free transfer in July 2006, netting four goals in 134 games, helping us to claim the FA Community Shield in his very first senior appearance. Anton Zlogar’s opening goal was the 250th we conceded under the sole charge of Gérard Houllier. Owen has since been comprehensively overtaken by Steven Gerrard. He left the club to join Middlesbrough in December 1975 for £72,000. 1912 – Centre-forward Fred Howe was born in Bredbury in Cheshire. He joined on a free transfer from Hyde United in March 1935, netting 36 times in 94 outings before joining Manchester City in June 1938. He bagged three reds trebles, including notching four times in our record 6-0 derby victory at Anfield in September 1935. 1889 - Irish forward Billy Lacey was born in Enniscorthy, Wexford. He signed from Everton alongside centre-forward Tommy Gracie in a swap deal for £300 and winger Harold Uren in February 1912, going on to play 259 times for the reds, including the FA Cup Final in 1914. He helped us to two League titles in the 1920’s, netting 29 times before crossing the Mersey to join New Brighton in June 1924. 1875 - Centre-half Robert Neill was born in Govan, Glasgow. At five feet four inches he is probably our shortest ever central defender, scoring three times in 27 games after signing on loan from Hibernian in April 1895 and then permanently in May 1896. He left to join Rangers in April 1897. Debuting at Manchester City 1910 - Forward Sam Gilligan scored on his reds debut as we beat City 2-1 at their Hyde Road ground, with Jack Parkinson also on target. 1969 - Phil Boersma made his reds bow on his twentieth birthday in our 3-2 defeat at Maine Road, becoming our first ever League Cup substitute, coming on for goalscorer Alun Evans in this Third Round tie, who bagged an equaliser when George Heslop’s panicked clearance struck him on the chest and went in. Supersub back at Anfield 1985 - David Fairclough played for the visitors as Oldham Athletic lost a League Cup Second Round first leg tie 3-0 at Anfield, our hundredth match in the competition. Steve McMahon bagged a brace, with Ian Rush also on target. A rare defeat 1974 - Burnley won 1-0 at Anfield, inflicting one of just eleven home League defeats we suffered in the whole of the 1970’s. Full-back Ian Brennan stunned Ray Clemence from thirty yards with his first ever goal for the club. Signing on 1938 – Utility player Bill Jones signed from Hayfield St Matthews. He scored seventeen times in 277 games for us, with his appearances including the 1950 FA Cup Final when he was preferred to Bob Paisley. Bill won two significant medals in the 1940’s - first he was awarded a Military Medal for his part in the crossing of the Rhine in the Second World War, and then he won a League title medal in 1947 on his return to Anfield. He had arrived as an Under-16 from Sunderland. Goalscoring feats at St. James’ Park 1987 - Steve Nicol grabbed a hat-trick in our 4-1 win at Newcastle United in front of the live TV cameras, following John Aldridge’s opener, who also had another strike disallowed for offside. Neil McDonald converted from the spot for the home side. 1961 - Right-half Gordon Milne scored his first reds goal to help us to a 2-1 Second Division win there, with our other score coming from a George Heslop own goal. Kevin Lewis had a penalty saved by United keeper Dave Hollins, while centre-half Dick White played his 200th game for the club. Dirk off the mark 2006 - Dirk Kuyt grabbed his first reds goal, and 150th career strike to date, which was also our fiftieth Premier League strike against Newcastle United. We won 2-0 at Anfield, with Luis García playing his hundredth reds game. Xabi Alonso spectacularly scored from inside his own half, the second time he had managed that feat for the reds that year. Quick-fire Billy 1958 - Billy Liddell scored after sixteen seconds, with Ronnie Moran putting through his own net to level the score at Bristol City in our Second Division meeting. He added another in the second half, with wing-half Bobby Campbell grabbing the first of his two reds goals as we won 3-1. This was Liddell’s third brace in six games. Barney Rubble departs 1985 - Left-back Alan Kennedy was sold to Sunderland for £100,000. He is best remembered for his winning strikes in two European Cup Finals, but also won five League titles, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields after moving from Newcastle United for £330,000 in August 1978, netting twenty times in 359 appearances. Off the mark 2015 – Substitute Danny Ings bagged his first reds goal as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Norwich City, with Lucas Leiva playing his 200th League game for the club. Unfortunately, Russell Martin capitalised on a Simon Mignolet error to equalise. Happy birthdays 1922 - Left-back Eddie Spicer was born in Garston, Liverpool. He was decorated for bravery whilst serving with the Royal Marines in the Second World War, going on to score twice in 168 reds games, helping us to the first post-war League title and playing in the 1950 FA Cup Final. Unfortunately, a second broken leg ended his career in December 1953. 1895 - Full-back Tommy Lucas was born in St. Helens. He signed from Alexandra Victoria in 1916 and played 366 reds games, netting three times, winning one League title and captaining England in his time at Anfield. He moved on to Clapton Orient in July 1933. 2003 – Midfielder James Balagizi was born in Manchester. He signed pro terms in September 2020, having joined as an Under-11 from Manchester City. A wise move 2012 – Defender Andre Wisdom netted his only goal for the club on his reds bow as we won our UEFA Europa League group game 5-3 at BSC Young Boys, with winger Oussama Assaidi and midfielder Suso also debuting. Juhani Ojala scored an own goal after just three minutes, with Wisdom nodding us back in front after an equaliser from Raphael Nuzzolo. Ojala and then Gonzalo Zárate struck after the break to turn the game around, before Sebastián Coates headed us level, with substitute Jonjo Shelvey bagging a brace to secure victory. Thiago’s bow 2020 - Thiago Alcântara debuted as we won 2-0 behind closed doors at Chelsea, with Andreas Christensen sent off for the home side on the stroke of half time. Sadio Mané bagged a brace early in the second half, with Alisson Becker later saving a penalty from Jorginho. East end despair 2014 – We lost 3-1 at West Ham United, with Winston Reid and Diafra Sakho putting the Irons two up inside the first ten minutes, with ex-red Stewart Downing effectively man-marking Steven Gerrard. Raheem Sterling struck past future red Adrián to give the reds hope, but Morgan Amalfitano completed the scoring late on. This meant we set a new club record of scoring in seventeen consecutive away games in the top flight, a record that eventually stopped at eighteen. Happy birthday Jerome 1996 – Forward Jerome Sinclair was born in Birmingham. He arrived from West Bromwich Albion’s Academy aged fourteen in the summer of 2011, becoming our youngest ever player in September 2012, aged sixteen years and six days, when he featured in a League Cup Third Round tie at his old club. He eventually struck once in five senior appearances before he moved to Watford for £4m in June 2016. Out-foxed again 2003 - Michael Owen netted from the spot before Emile Heskey struck the winner against his old club Leicester City at Anfield for the third consecutive season as we won 2-1, with Marcus Bent bagging a very late consolation for the visitors. Disappointment at The Dell 1986 - Kevin MacDonald broke his leg shortly after coming on as a substitute as we lost 2-1 at Southampton, with Steve McMahon equalising after David Armstrong opened the scoring with the last of his four goals against the reds. However, Glenn Cockerill struck the winner for the Saints. 1980 - Graeme Souness and David Fairclough netted as we drew 2-2, with Phil Neal missing a penalty. Avi Cohen was heavily criticised in the Israeli press for playing on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. 1997 - We also drew on the south coast, with Karl-Heinz Riedle nabbing our goal before Kevin Davies equalised with the first of his four strikes past us as centre-half Mark Wright played his 210th and final game for the reds. A milestone day at Old Trafford 2004 - We lost 2-1 at Manchester United, as we benefited from a John O’Shea own goal, sandwiched between a Mikael Silvestre brace for the home side. Steven Gerrard broke a bone in his foot in front of 67,857, the largest crowd to watch the reds in the Premier League to that point. This was our 2,000th away League match, and 4,000th League game overall, as United reached 200 League goals against us, with keeper Jerzy Dudek playing his hundredth reds game, and Ryan Giggs appearing for the 600th time for United. 1893 - We had previously visited United, playing Newton Heath as they were then known in a friendly at Bank Street. Patrick Gordon, Hugh McQueen and Malcolm McVean all struck as we won 3-0. Centenary defeat 1988 - We lost 2-1 at Arsenal in the Mercantile Credit Centenary Trophy, staged to celebrate a hundred years of the Football League. Perry Groves opened the scoring in the first half with Steve Staunton bagging a late equaliser with his first reds goal, but Brian Marwood struck the winner. Charlie Boyd sat on our bench for one of only two times, on his nineteenth birthday. Derby joy 1913 - Billy Lacey struck a brace as we beat Everton 2-1 at Goodison Park in a First Division meeting, to secure our first win of the season in our fourth fixture. Full-back Sam Speakman made the first of his 26 reds appearances in this game. 2016 – Centre-half Ragnar Klavan opened the scoring with his first reds goal as we won 3-0 at Derby County in a League Cup Third Round match, as midfielder Ovie Ejaria and keeper Loris Karius made their debuts. Philippe Coutinho and Divock Origi both scored after the break. Bill begins 1924 – Defender Bill Cockburn played the first of his 67 reds games as we held Bury to a goalless draw at Gigg Lane in a top-flight meeting. Mixed fortunes against the Villains We have faced Aston Villa three times in the top flight on this day in history, winning twice. 1975 - John Toshack bagged his fiftieth League goal for the club with Kevin Keegan and Jimmy Case also netting in the final half hour as we won 3-0 at home. 1919 - Dick Forshaw bagged the only goal of the game at Villa Park to hand us victory, which was the first of his 124 reds strikes. 1930 - Gordon Hodgson struck a brace as we lost 4-2 in the Midlands. Eric Houghton scored the first of his six goals against the reds, with George Brown netting one of his nine, Billy Walker one of his five past us, and Tom Waring nabbing the first of his six. Three times against the Potters 2008 - We were held to a goalless draw by Stoke City at Anfield, with Steven Gerrard having a legitimate second-minute free-kick strike ruled out. 1969 - We saw off the Potters 3-1 at home, with Emlyn Hughes on target in his hundredth League game for the reds. Roger Hunt and Ian Callaghan also struck in our tenth consecutive League defeat of Stoke in what was Bill Shankly’s 500th game in charge of the reds. 1902 - Leigh Roose struck through the wrong net in the second minute as were held to a 1-1 top-flight draw by Stoke in L4. Beattie beaten 1983 - Andy Beattie died, aged seventy. He guested for the reds at full-back during the Second World War, and later spent some time on our backroom staff. He managed a host of clubs as well as the Scotland national side, working with Bill Shankly at Huddersfield Town, having played alongside him at Preston North End. Young Englanders 1983 - Future red Paul Walsh grabbed a brace as England Under-21’s beat their Danish counterparts 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier at Carrow Road. Ex-red Dave Watson and future red Mark Walters both made their debuts in this game, while fellow future red Mark Wright also played. 2003 - Michael Foley-Sheridan and David Raven both played for their countries at Under-19’s level in European Championships qualifiers, with the latter making his debut for England at this level. The Republic of Ireland trounced San Marino 10-1 in Serravalle, while England beat Liechtenstein 2-0 in Moscow. 2010 – Samed Yeşil scored his first goal for Germany Under-17’s as they drew a friendly 2-2 with Italy in Elversberg with fellow future red Emre Can also featuring. 1950 – Centre-half Laurie Hughes played for an England World Cup XI against the FA Canadian Touring Team in the FA Charity Shield at Stamford Bridge, with England winning 4-2. Reds aiming to go to Italy 1978 - Phil Neal scored his third goal in four England games as they won 4-3 in a European Championships qualifier in Denmark. Emlyn Hughes skippered a side that also included Ray Clemence and ex-red Kevin Keegan, who netted twice. On the same day, Steve Heighway and future red Mark Lawrenson both played in the first ever senior international between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, at Lansdowne Road. Meanwhile, Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness both appeared for Scotland in their 3-2 win in Austria, as they too opened their campaign to qualify for the finals in Italy. Nice one Cyril 1941 - Cyril Done scored a hat-trick as we beat Manchester City 4-2 in a Wartime League game at Anfield, with Dickie Dorsett netting the other. Twice against the Trotters 1897 – Forward Dan Cunliffe bagged a brace with John McCartney also on target as we beat Bolton Wanderers 3-1 in a friendly at Anfield. 1947 - The Trotters returned for a First Division fixture, with the game this time ending goalless. Jameo saves 1995 - David James saved a penalty from Michael Gray as we beat Sunderland 2-0 in a League Cup Second Round first leg match at Anfield, thanks to goals from Steve McManaman and substitute Michael Thomas. Fabs at the Olympics 2000 – Future red Fábio Aurélio played for Brazil as they beat Japan 1-0 in an Olympics match in Brisbane. Only cap 1989 – Future reds goalkeeping coach José Ochotorena won his only cap in Spain’s 1-0 friendly defeat of Poland in A Coruña. On the move 2013 – Argentine ex-reserves midfielder Gerardo Bruna signed for Spanish Segunda División B side S.D. Huesca, netting once in seventeen outings during his one season there. 2016 – Former Assistant Manager Pako Ayestarán was sacked as Head Coach of Valencia, having only been in charge for three months. 2021 – Centre-half Terence Miles, the nephew of former Academy forward John Miles, turned pro with the reds, having arrived at Under-7’s level. On the same day, Harry Kewell was sacked as Manager of National League side Barnet, having lost five and drawn two of his seven games in charge. Also in international action 2018 - Future red Mateusz Musiałowski played for Poland Under-16’s in their 3-1 defeat of the Czech Republic. 2006 – Future red Astrit Ajdarević appeared for Sweden Under-17’s as they drew 1-1 with Liechtenstein in a European Championships qualifier in Greece. 2001 - Future reds Javier Mascherano and Fernando Torres faced each other in the Under-17’s World Championship Finals in Trinidad, with Argentina beating Spain 4-2. 1977 – Joey Jones and John Toshack both featured as Wales drew a friendly 0-0 in Kuwait.
