New defenders 1974 - Phil Neal signed from Northampton Town for £66,000. He made 650 reds appearances, netting 59 times while becoming our most decorated player of all time, including four European Cups, eight League titles, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, four League Cups and four FA Charity Shields. 1996 - Jamie Carragher signed professional terms at Anfield. He made a total of 737 reds appearances before retiring in the summer of 2013, in a multitude of positions, and is ranked number two in the club’s all-time appearance holders list. He netted just five times as he helped us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, three League Cups and two FA Charity Shields. 1987 - Reserves defender Brian Mooney joined Preston North End on loan, later signing for them permanently for a £25,000 fee. He only ever played one senior reds game, as a substitute for Jim Beglin in a League Cup win at Fulham in October 1986, only managing to net 26 goals in 128 appearances while at Deepdale, winning their Player of the Year award in 1988/89 as they missed out on promotion to the Second Division, then moving back into the top flight to sign for Sunderland for £225,000 in 1991. Yet another treble 1990 - Ian Rush bagged a League Cup treble in our 4-1 win at Crewe Alexandra, with his second strike taking him to 250 goals for the club. Steve Staunton also scored as we won 9-2 on aggregate to reach the Third Round. This was one of just two victories we ever enjoyed in our green and white Adidas away kit, with Steve Nicol featuring for the 300th time. Anfield debutants 2001 - Chris Kirkland made his reds bow as we lost 2-1 after extra time to Grimsby Town in the first game of our Worthington Cup defence, with all the goals coming after the ninety minutes. Gary McAllister nabbed our goal from the spot, his last reds strike, with Marlon Broomes equalising and the winner coming from boyhood red and ex-Evertonian Phil Jevons. Grégory Vignal broke his ankle early on in this game with Frode Kippe making his second and last senior appearances. 1920 - Forward Peter McKinney scored his only goal for the club on his reds debut as we drew 2-2 with Sheffield United in a top-flight fixture, with Dick Johnson also scoring. Albert Rawson struck twice for the Blades. 1929 - Centre-forward Harold Barton made his reds bow in our 1-1 First Division draw with Blackburn Rovers, with Henry Race and future red Les Bruton on target. International half centuries 1996 - Stig Inge Bjørnebye won his fiftieth cap for Norway as they beat Hungary 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Oslo. Future clubmate Øyvind Leonhardsen also featured. On the same day, ex-red Ronnie Rosenthal reached his half-century for Israel as they drew 1-1 with Russia in another qualifier in Tel-Aviv. Also in international action that day were Patrik Berger, Haukur Ingi Gudnason, Steve McManaman and future reds Markus Babbel, Paul Ince, Harry Kewell and Vladimír Šmicer. The lights come on at Goodison 1957 - The floodlights were used at Goodison Park for the first time as we lost 2-0 in a Floodlight Challenge Cup game played there to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Liverpool County FA, with both goals coming from Eddie Thomas. Two tons up 1926 - Outside-left Fred Hopkin made his 200th reds appearance as we lost 1-0 at Newcastle United, with Hughie Gallacher netting one of his eight strikes against us. 1979 – We drew 1-1 at Bolton Wanderers, with Kenny Dalglish heading in our equaliser as Phil Neal played his 200th League game for the reds. Mixed fortunes against the Mancs 1909 – Forward James Speakman made his reds debut as we beat Manchester United 3-2 at Anfield thanks to a brace from Jack Parkinson and a goal from Jimmy Stewart. Jimmy Turnbull converted a penalty, the last of his seven goals against the reds with the unrelated Sandy Turnbull scoring one of his five past us. 1965 - We lost 2-0 at Old Trafford, thanks to one of George Best’s seven goals against us and one of Denis Law’s six strikes past the reds, with both goals coming in the first half. International firsts and lasts 1999 - Dietmar Hamann won his first cap as a red, and his eighteenth in total, as Germany were held to a goalless draw by Turkey in a Euro 2000 qualifier in Munich. However, the result was enough to secure them top spot in the group, ahead of their opponents. Future reds Markus Babbel and Christian Ziege also featured. On the same day, Sami Hyypiä netted his first senior Finland goal in their 4-1 defeat of Northern Ireland in the same qualifying group, while winning his thirtieth full international cap. Future red Jari Litmanen also played, winning his sixtieth cap. Meanwhile, Bolo Zenden bagged his first goal as a Barcelona player as the Netherlands were held to a 2-2 friendly draw by Brazil at the Amsterdam ArenA. 2016 – Future red Mohamed Salah struck as Egypt won a World Cup qualifier 2-1 in the Republic of the Congo, his first goal since moving permanently to Roma from Chelsea. 1996 - Jason McAteer netted his first goal for the Republic of Ireland as they beat FYR Macedonia 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier at Lansdowne Road, the first ever meeting between these two countries. Ex-red John Aldridge came on as a substitute to win his 69th and final cap, while former red Steve Staunton and future red Robbie Keane also played. 1991 - István Kozma won his last cap as a Dunfermline Athletic player as Hungary were beaten 2-0 at home by Belgium in a friendly. 1984 - Ex-red Avi Cohen bagged his first goal for Israel, while winning his 27th cap, as they drew 2-2 with Greece in a friendly in Athens. 2020 - Takumi Minamino won his first cap as a reds player as Japan were held to a goalless draw by Cameroon in Utrecht. On the same day, Morgan Boyes played for Wales Under-21’s in their 5-0 thumping by Belgium in a European Championships qualifier in Leuven, with Kamil Grabara featuring for Poland Under-21’s. More international firsts 2004 – Ex-red Alou Diarra made his senior international debut as a substitute when France were held to a goalless draw by the Republic of Ireland in a World Cup qualifier at the Stade de France. Djibril Cissé, Steve Finnan and future red Robbie Keane all also featured. Xabi Alonso, Milan Baroš, Jerzy Dudek, Sami Hyypiä, John Arne Riise, future reds Craig Bellamy, Richard Hughes, Alex Manninger, Christian Poulsen, Maxi Rodríguez, Fernando Torres and Andriy Voronin and ex-reds Paul Jones, Michael Owen and Rigobert Song all also played in qualifiers that day. Sadio again 2021 - Sadio Mané scored in his fifth consecutive game as Senegal thumped Namibia 4-1 in a World Cup qualifier in Thiès. Xherdan Shaqiri won his first cap as a Olympique Lyonnais player as Switzerland beat Northern Ireland 2-0 in Geneva. Harvey Davies debuted for England Under-19’s in their 3-1 defeat of Mexico in Malaga. Naby Keïta, Andy Robertson and ex-red Péter Gulácsi all skippered their countries, with James Balagizi, Conor Bradley, Jakub Ojrzyński, Kostas Tsimikas and ex-red Conor Coady also in international action, with Steve Clarke taking charge of Scotland. Young champions 2011 – Conor Coady and Adam Morgan both featured as England Under-19’s won the Limoges Tournament after beating Ukraine 3-1. Abe’s farewell 1909 – Scottish forward Abe Hartley died aged just 37 after collapsing with heart failure at Southampton docks. He had joined the reds from Everton for £175 in December 1897, but only notched once in twelve outings before joining Southern League side Southampton the following May. Management moves 2009 – John Barnes was sacked as Manager of Tranmere Rovers, with his assistant Jason McAteer also losing his job. 2020 - Robbie Fowler was appointed Head Coach of East Bengal. He remained in charge until September 2021, leading them to just three victories in twenty games. More youngsters on target 2006 - Craig Lindfield grabbed a brace with Paul Anderson also netting as England Under-19’s held Austria to a 3-3 draw in a UEFA Preparatory Tournament game, with Adam Hammill also featuring and future red Adam Lallana winning his only cap at this level. Future red Jordy Brouwer also represented his country at this level on the same day. 2009 – Krisztián Nemeth struck twice as Hungary beat Italy 3-2 after extra time in the World Championship Finals Quarter-final in Egypt. The game was a fiery encounter, with Italy having three players dismissed, with one Hungarian and both coaches also being sent off. Péter Gulácsi and András Simon both also featured. Future red Andy Carroll bagged his only two Under-21’s goals as England thumped Montenegro 6-0 at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. Other reds games 1982 – Graeme Souness netted as we lost 3-1 at West Ham United. 1963 – We beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 at Anfield with Ian St. John on target either side of a Jimmy Melia goal. 1954 – We beat Rotherham United 3-1 in a Second Division fixture in L4 thanks to goals from Alan A’Court, Billy Liddell and John Evans. 1946 – We drew 2-2 at Middlesbrough as Billy Liddell struck twice to put us two up at the break. Micky Fenton netted one of his nine goals against the reds, with George Dews equalising for the home side. 1937 – We lost 1-0 to West Bromwich Albion at Anfield as Stan Wood netted the last of his five goals past us. Also in international action 2017 – Dejan Lovren, Ben Woodburn and ex-reds Joe Allen, Iago Aspas, Pepe Reina all played in World Cup qualifiers, with Corey Whelan featuring for the Irish Under-21’s on the same day. Happy birthday KHR 1965 - Karl-Heinz Riedle was born in Weiler-Simmerberg. The German striker arrived from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund for a £1.8m fee in July 1997, and struck fifteen times in 76 reds games, as well as having a positive influence on the young Michael Owen before joining Fulham for £200,000 in September 1999. 1900 – Full-back Jimmy Gray was born in Glasgow. The South African international signed from Transvaal in 1926 but only played one first-team game for the reds, a 2-1 home League defeat by Sheffield United in September 1928. He left in January 1930 to sign for Exeter City for £75, where he is remembered as one of their greatest ever players. European Anfield thumpings 1969 - Alec Lindsay scored on his debut in our 10-0 trouncing of Irish side Dundalk in the Fairs Cup. This is also the first time that Gérard Houllier witnessed the reds in action, while working as a teacher on Merseyside. He was accompanied by future reds coach Patrice Bergues. Alun Evans, Tommy Smith and Bobby Graham all grabbed a brace each, with Chris Lawler, Peter Thompson and Ian Callaghan all also on target. 1992 - Ian Rush scored four goals in our 6-1 defeat of Cypriots Apollon Limassol in our first game of that season’s European Cup Winners’ Cup campaign, in front of just 12,769 fans. Rushie’s goals made him our leading European marksman to that point on nineteen and came following a rare brace from Paul Stewart, his last strikes for the club. Phil Charnock made his reds debut, becoming our youngest ever European player. Marios Charalambous was sent off for the visitors with the score at 3-0. Stevie at the double 2008 - Steven Gerrard scored a twice-taken penalty to put us ahead at Olympique de Marseille in our Champions League group encounter after equalising with a stunning strike following Lorik Cana’s opener. We held on to claim a 2-1 victory as Stevie moved to 99 goals for the reds. Dan again 2013 – Daniel Sturridge scored in his fifth consecutive game as we drew 2-2 in a crazy game at Swansea City. Victor Moses scored on his reds bow as Mamadou Sakho also debuted, with Steven Gerrard captaining the side for the 400th time as Andre Wisdom featured for the 22nd and last time. However, he later crossed for Michu to head in the equaliser. Reds farewells 1959 - Legendary left-back Donald McKinlay died in Liverpool. He signed from Newton Villa in January 1910, making 434 appearances before joining Prescot Cables in July 1929. He scored 34 times, including one struck spectacularly from ten yards inside his own half at West Ham United in January 1926! He skippered us to two League titles, and also played in our first FA Cup Final in 1914. 1949 – Left-winger Doug McAvoy moved on to Queen Of The South. He had only made two senior reds appearances after signing from his hometown club Kilmarnock in December 1947 for £7,000. 1929 – Forward John McFarlane played his second and last reds game as we lost 3-0 at Huddersfield Town, with Harry Davies netting a treble for the Terriers, the first goals of his four past us. He remained our youngest ever player until Jack Robinson’s debut in May 2010, having debuted seven months earlier at home to Everton, aged seventeen years and 47 days. Anfield trebles 1922 - Dick Forshaw scored a hat-trick in our 5-2 top-flight defeat of Preston North End, to add to goals from Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers and Tom Bromilow. Tommy Roberts netted one of his four goals against the reds, with Alf Quantrill also on target as left-back Donald McKinlay reached 200 reds outings. 1990 - Peter Beardsley struck a treble, including his fiftieth reds goal, with John Barnes also heading in a goal as we trounced Manchester United 4-0. Keeper Les Sealey booted the ball into the crowd at the end, but the Kopite who caught it later returned the ball to the hat-trick hero. Most recently 2017 – Burnley held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield, with Mohamed Salah equalising shortly after Scott Arfield had given the visitors a shock lead. 2016 – We won 2-1 at Chelsea, taking a two-goal half-time lead thanks to a Dejan Lovren goal and a stunning strike from Jordan Henderson. Diego Costa pulled one back after an hour. 1936 – We lost a top-flight encounter 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, with Joe Bambrick netting the last two of his four goals past us for Chelsea. Treble firsts 2010 - Joe Cole bagged his first reds goal as we thumped Steaua Bucureşti 4-1 at Anfield in a UEFA Europa League group game, with Roy Hodgson becoming the first reds boss to win all of his first five games in continental competition. His goal came after just 27 seconds, our fast ever European strike as Pepe Reina captained the reds for the first time. Cristian Tanase levelled the score inside a quarter of an hour but David N’Gog converted a second-half penalty before late strikes from Lucas and N’Gog. 2014 – Mario Balotelli struck his first reds goal to open the scoring late on against Bulgarian side Ludogorets Razgrad in our opening UEFA Champions League group game at Anfield. Dani Abalo equalised in the ninetieth minute, but Steven Gerrard secured a 2-1 victory from the spot in stoppage time after Javier Manquillo was felled in the area. 300 for Rafa 2009 – Dirk Kuyt grabbed the only goal of our Champions League group game against Hungarian side Debreceni VSC at Anfield, in what was Rafael Benítez’s 300th game in charge. From the TV studio to pitch-side 1972 - TV pundit Jimmy Hill came out of the crowd to fill in for injured linesman Dennis Drewitt, during our goalless League draw at Highbury. Alf off the mark 1963 - Alf Arrowsmith and Peter Thompson both struck their first reds goals as we thumped Wolverhampton Wanderers 6-0 in a First Division fixture with Ian Callaghan and Gordon Milne also on target, and Roger Hunt bagging a brace. This remains our joint best ever victory over Wolves, with keeper Jim Furnell playing his 28th and last reds game. 1953 - We also hosted Wolves in the top flight, when Bill Jones netted his seventeenth and last reds goal in a 1-1 draw, and Dennis Wilshaw scoring one of his seven goals past us. Two derby wins We have twice beaten Everton 3-1 on this day in history. 1986 - We won the first leg of the Screen Sport Super Cup Final at Anfield by that score thanks to an Ian Rush brace and a goal from Steve McMahon. Ex-red Kevin Sheedy netted for the Blues. 1950 - Jack Balmer netted two as we won in the First Division at Goodison, with Albert Stubbins also on the mark. This season was the most recent occasion that the Blues were relegated. 1911 - We lost another top-flight encounter 2-1 across the park, with Jack Parkinson grabbing our consolation. Forward ‘Wee’ Ronald Orr injured ligaments in his right leg, leaving us down to ten men for the second half. He was out of action for six weeks. Jackie McNamara had equalised before Simon Donnelly put the home side ahead from the spot. 1981 - Our other European game on this day ended in a 1-0 defeat of Oulun Palloseura in Finland, with Kenny Dalglish nabbing the goal. Henning Berg was sent off for Rovers in this game. Thumping Boro 1931 - We beat Middlesbrough 7-2 in a First Division match at Anfield, our biggest ever win over the Teesiders. Harold Barton and Gordon Hodgson both struck twice, with the latter playing his 200th League game for the reds. Forward Jimmy Smith bagged his 38th and final reds goal, with Gordon Gunson and Tom Morrison also netting. George Camsell grabbed two of his nine strikes against the reds. Against City We have twice visited Manchester City on this day in history. 1893 - The first time came in a Second Division match at Hyde Road when they were still known as Ardwick, with Jimmy Stott netting the only goal of the game, his first reds strike. 1944 – Reginald Dix bagged a brace, including a penalty, as we drew a Wartime League game 2-2. On the same day, Ray Lambert and future reds boss Don Welsh featured as England drew 2-2 with Wales in a wartime international staged at Anfield. Red arrivals 1893 - Left-half William Hughes signed from Bootle. He only ever made one senior reds appearance, in our first season in the League. 2011 – The appointment of Gary Adlen as Foundation Director was announced. He was in charge of the expansion of the existing LFC Foundation charity to include all of the club’s community work in one place, moving on in August 2013. 2019 – Young midfielder Jake Cain signed professional terms with the club. He made his senior debut in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay defeat of Shrewsbury Town in February 2020. 2021 – Centre-half Lee Jonas turned pro with the reds. He had arrived from Everton at Under-12’s level. A youthful hat-trick 2001 - Florent Sinama-Pongolle bagged a treble for France Under-17’s in their 5-3 defeat of the USA at the World Championships in The Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago, with club-mate Anthony Le Tallec also in the team. 2016 - Rafael Camacho scored his first Under-17's goal for Portugal, converting a spot-kick in their 2-0 defeat of Wales in a European Championships qualifier. Loris debuts 2008 – Future reds keeper Loris Karius won his first cap for Germany Under-16’s in their 5-0 thumping of Belgium. Olympian reds 2000 - Future red Milan Baroš appeared for the Czech Republic in their 3-2 defeat by Kuwait in the Olympics in Brisbane. On the same day, Brad Friedel featured as the USA drew 1-1 with Cameroon in Canberra in the same group. Strikers on the move 1991 - Paul Walsh joined Queens Park Rangers on loan from Tottenham Hotspur. He only made two appearances for the R’s before returning to White Hart Lane. 1987 - Ex-reserves striker Mike Newell joined Leicester City from Luton Town for £350,000. He served as a Director from the formation of the club until July 1921, having two lengthy spells as the club’s Chairman.
