    New defenders 1974 - Phil Neal signed from Northampton Town for £66,000. He made 650 reds appearances, netting 59 times while becoming our most decorated player of all time, including four European Cups, eight League titles, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, four League Cups and four FA Charity Shields. 1996 - Jamie Carragher signed professional terms at Anfield.     On the way to our first European Cup 1977 - We drew closer to our first European Cup triumph. Having overcome Saint-Étienne in the previous round, we won our Semi-final first leg 3-1 at Zürich, with two goals from Phil Neal, including a spot-kick, and a Steve Heighway strike after we had gone behind to an early penalty from Peter Risi.     The birth of a legend 1871 - Forward Malcolm McVean was born in Bonhill, Dumbartonshire. McVean signed from Third Lanark in 1892, scored our first ever League goal, bagging 43 in total in 126 reds games. He helped us to the Lancashire League title and two Second Division championships before joining Burnley in March 1897 alongside inside-forward Jimmy Ross. He died back in his native Scotland in 1907 aged just 36.     Souey on his way out 1994 - Graeme Souness took charge of his final game as Manager as we were humbled at home by First Division Bristol City, who won an FA Cup Third Round replay 1-0 thanks to Brian Tinnion’s second-half goal.     The greatest performance ever 1988 - We trounced Nottingham Forest 5-0, just four days after we had beaten them 2-1 in the FA Cup Semi-final. It was a stunning display that the legendary Tom Finney described as “the greatest performance ever”. John Aldridge bagged a brace, to add to goals from Ray Houghton, Gary Gillespie and Peter Beardsley.
