Double reds debutants 1974 - Reds legends Terry McDermott and Phil Neal both made their reds debuts as we held Everton to a goalless draw at Goodison Park. 1907 – Winger Harold Uren debuted as we drew 1-1 with Manchester City at Hyde Road, with inside-left Bill McPherson on target. Four for Jack 1946 - Jack Balmer bagged all four goals in our 4-1 win at Derby County. This was the second of his three hat-tricks in consecutive games. His third goal was his fiftieth reds strike, while Raich Carter’s late consolation was the last of his six strikes against the reds. Billy’s record 1957 – Billy Liddell played his 431st League game for the reds as we lost a Second Division encounter 3-1 at Ipswich Town, a new club record. He went on to make 492 League appearances for the club in total. Johnny Wheeler struck for the reds, with Ted Phillips bagging the first two of his five goals past us and Tommy Garneys also netting. Against the Owls We have twice faced Sheffield Wednesday in First Division encounters on this day in history, without being beaten. 1968 - We won 2-1 at Hillsborough with Chris Lawler and Ian Callaghan on target. 1986 - Ian Rush netted a minute after Lee Chapman bagged one of his six strikes against the reds as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. In comes Kevin 1984 – Scottish midfielder Kevin MacDonald signed from Leicester City for £400,000. He played 64 reds games, scoring five times, helping us to the League and FA Cup double in 1986, with skipper Alan Hansen calling him “far and away our most influential player.” He moved to Coventry City in June 1989 after a number of loan spells away from Anfield while recovering from a broken leg. International debutants 2007 - Scott Carson won his first senior cap, with Peter Crouch bagging the only goal of England’s friendly against future red Alex Manninger in Austria. Steven Gerrard, future red Joe Cole and ex-red Michael Owen all also played. Future red James Milner converted a penalty past Nikolay Mihaylov for England Under-21’s on the same day. 2003 – Future red Glen Johnson made his senior international bow as Danny Murphy won his ninth and last cap, with David James winning his final cap as a West Ham United player, and his 21st in total, in England’s 3-2 friendly defeat by Denmark at Old Trafford. Joe Cole bagged his first international goal as a Chelsea player, with Emile Heskey also featuring, while Jerzy Dudek also played in a friendly that day. 2022 – Calvin Ramsay won his first senior cap for Steve Clarke’s Scotland as Andy Robertson skippered them to a 2-1 friendly defeat in Türkiye, with Ozan Kabak on target for the first time for his country as he featured for the first time since joining TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Ex-red Dejan Lovren and future red Alexis Mac Allister also featured in friendlies that day ahead of the World Cup Finals. 2002 – Future red Jermaine Pennant made his debut for England Under-18’s in their 3-2 friendly defeat of Belgium in Bradford. 2010 – Future red Steven Caulker made his debut for England Under-21’s in their 2-0 defeat to Germany in Wiesbaden, with Martin Kelly also in action. 1994 - Steve McManaman and Neil Ruddock both played their first senior internationals as England beat Nigeria 1-0 at Wembley. It was to be Ruddock’s only full cap, while McManaman went on to win 37. John Barnes, Rob Jones and ex-red Peter Beardsley all also played. 1988 - Future red Michael Thomas made his England debut as they were held to a 1-1 friendly draw in Saudi Arabia. Peter Beardsley also played. John Aldridge, Ray Houghton and Steve Staunton all featured as the Republic of Ireland lost a World Cup qualifier 2-0 in Spain on the same day. Red endings 1935 – South African forward Lance Carr bagged his eighth and final reds goal in our 3-1 top-flight defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Tom Smalley bagged a brace, with Billy Wrigglesworth also on target for the home side. 1929 – Bill Murray struck his only reds goal as we won 3-2 at Aston Villa. Jim Smith also netted with Tommy Mort putting through his own net for us. George Brown netted one of his nine goals against the reds, with Joe Beresford scoring one of his four past us. 1949 – Future red Sammy Smyth scored his last goal for Ireland as they were thumped 9-2 by England at Maine Road in a British International Championships game that also counted as a World Cup qualifier. 2021 – Forward Louis Bimpson died. He scored 39 goals in his 102 first-team appearances after signing on a free transfer from Burscough in January 1953. He moved on to Blackburn Rovers in November 1959. Red birth 1964 – Forward David West was born. He signed from his hometown club Dorchester Town for £15,000 in March 1983. He made it to the first-team bench on two occasions without ever making a senior appearance, moving on to Torquay United in September 1985. Up against Rushie 1996 - We won 2-0 at Leeds United thanks to goals from Neil Ruddock nabbing his twelfth and last reds goal and Steve McManaman also on target. We kept our first clean sheet in two months, while Ian Rush suffered his fourteenth game in a Leeds shirt without finding the net and was booked to boot. In and out 1960 – We lost for the first time in the new Football League Cup, in our third fixture, being beaten 2-1 at home by Southampton in the Third Round thanks to two of Terry Paine’s four goals past us, with Roger Hunt grabbing our consolation. 2012 - Corporate Relations and Communications Director Jen Chang left the club by mutual consent, following a controversial, bizarre encounter with a fan online and in person. 2018 – Ex-red First Team Coach Paco Herrera was re-appointed as Manager of Unión Deportiva Las Palmas, but only stayed in charge for four months before being sacked again. 2021 – Ex-reds centre-forward Andy Carroll signed for Reading. He scored twice in eight outings, returning to the Royals for a second spell in September 2022. Thumping the Baggies 1985 – Transfer-listed Paul Walsh set up Steve Nicol, Jan Mølby and Mark Lawrenson to score before himself netting as we beat West Bromwich Albion 4-1 in a top-flight fixture, after Garth Crooks had headed the Baggies in front, their most recent Anfield goal prior to April 2012, one of his four goals against the reds. Ex-red Graeme Souness was in the crowd for this game. Scottish fame 2008 - Billy Liddell and Ian St. John were both inducted into Scotland’s Hall of Fame. Liddell had bagged eight goals in 29 outings for his country, while the Saint netted nine times while winning 21 caps. Jari at the double 1994 - Ajax’s Jari Litmanen grabbed a brace in Finland’s 5-0 European Championships qualifying thumping of the Faroe Islands in Helsinki. On the same day, Stig Inge Bjørnebye won his fortieth cap for Norway as they won 4-0 in Belarus in another qualifier, with Øyvind Leonhardsen winning his 35th cap, and first as a Wimbledon player and ex-red István Kozma also in action. Also on target in Euro ‘96 qualifiers that day were ex-reds John Aldridge and Ronnie Rosenthal. Aldo struck as the Republic of Ireland won in Northern Ireland for the first time, 4-0 at the fourth attempt. Phil Babb, future red Jason McAteer and ex-reds Jim Magilton and Steve Staunton all also featured. Ronnie grabbed his first goal as a Tottenham Hotspur player in Israel’s 2-0 defeat of Azerbaijan in Turkey. Ian Rush, future reds Patrik Berger, Stéphane Henchoz, Gary McAllister and ex-reds István Kozma and Dean Saunders all also played in qualifiers that day, with Roy Hodgson taking charge of Switzerland. 1986 – Future reds centre-half Glenn Hysén scored for Sweden as they won a European Championships qualifier 5-0 in Malta. 2013 – Victor Moses converted a penalty and was booked as Nigeria beat Ethiopia 2-0 in the second leg of their World Cup Play-off in Calabar to reach the Finals in Brazil. Kolo Touré won his first cap as a reds player as Ivory Coast drew 1-1 with future red Sadio Mané’s Senegal in Casablanca. Also in international action that day were Joe Allen, Lucas, Pepe Reina, ex-red Xabi Alonso and future red Alberto Moreno. 2014 – Joe Allen faced Divock Origi and future red Christian Benteke in a goalless Euro 2016 qualifying draw between Belgium and Wales in Brussels, with future red Gini Wijnaldum also playing for his country that day. 2018 – Mohamed Salah scored in his eighth consecutive game for Egypt as they beat Tunisia 3-2 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Alexandria. On the same day, Gini Wijnaldum netted for the Netherlands as they beat France 2-0 in a UEFA Nations League group game in Rotterdam. Future red Diogo Jota scored while captaining Portugal Under-21’s in their 1-0 European Championships Play-off win in Poland, with future red Kostas Tsimikas winning his seventeenth and last cap for Greece Under-21’s as they lost a Play-off 1-0 to Austria in Thessaloniki. Red Bull Salzburg’s Dominik Szoboszlai netted while captaining Hungary Under-19’s as they won a friendly 3-2 in Italy. Alisson Becker, Roberto Firmino, Kamil Grabara, Vítězslav Jaroš, Virgil van Dijk, Harry Wilson, future reds Wataru Endō, Arthur Melo and Takumi Minamino, and ex-reds Joe Allen, Ryan Babel and Luis Suárez all also played for their countries that day. Final caps 1983 - Ex-red Ray Clemence played his 61st and final international game in England’s 4-0 European Championships qualifying win in Luxembourg. Sammy Lee and future red John Barnes both also played. 1977 - John Toshack won his final cap as a reds player, and 34th to date, as Wales won 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Czechoslovakia. Joey Jones was also in the side. 2007 - Nicolas Anelka played his final game for France while with Bolton Wanderers as France were held 2-2 by Morocco in a friendly. 1997 - Brad Friedel won his 53rd cap for the USA, his final one while with Columbus Crew, as they beat El Salvador 5-2 in a World Cup qualifier in Foxboro. 1999 – Future red Pepe Reina played for Spain Under-17’s for the second and last time in their 1-0 defeat by Mexico in the World Championship Finals in New Zealand. Meanwhile, Frode Kippe won his eighteenth and final cap for Norway Under-21’s, playing alongside future red John Arne Riise as they lost a European Championships qualifying play-off 4-0 in Spain. 2004 - Scott Carson won his eighth and final England Under-21’s cap as a Leeds United player as they lost a friendly 1-0 in Spain, with future red Glen Johnson dismissed while skippering the side and fellow future reds Stewart Downing and James Milner also in action. On the same day, future red Robbie Keane was on the scoresheet as the Republic of Ireland beat Croatia 1-0 in a friendly, with Steve Finnan also playing. Meanwhile, Harry Kewell faced John Arne Riise in a friendly at Craven Cottage and future red Alberto Aquilani featured as Italy Under-21’s beat Bulgaria 2-0 in Sofia. 2019 – Harry Wilson scored as Wales won a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in Azerbaijan. Virgil van Dijk and ex-red Ryan Babel both played as the Netherlands drew a qualifier 0-0 in Northern Ireland, with Steve Clarke leading Scotland to a 2-1 defeat in Cyprus and Bobby Duncan featuring for England Under-19’s. Emile at the double 1995 - Leicester City’s Emile Heskey grabbed both goals as England Under-18’s beat Latvia 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier at Wycombe’s Causeway Stadium. Off the mark 1983 - Mark Lawrenson nabbed a brace, his first international goals as a reds player, as the Republic of Ireland thrashed Malta 8-0 in a European Championships qualifier at Dalymount Park. Ex-red Kevin Sheedy netted his first Irish goal in the same game. Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush, future red John Wark and ex-reds Frank McGarvey and Joey Jones also played in qualifiers on the same day. 1977 - Kevin Keegan grabbed his first goal following his switch to Hamburger SV. England beat Italy 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley, with Emlyn Hughes captaining a side that also included Ray Clemence and Phil Neal. Derby draw 1938 – We were held to a 2-2 draw by Everton in a Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round tie at Anfield, with E. Patterson netting as we also benefited from an own goal. Harry off to Germany 2005 - Harry Kewell played in Australia’s 1-0 defeat of Uruguay in Sydney, the second leg of their World Cup Play-off. With the scores level on aggregate, the Aussies won through 4-2 on penalties, with Kewell converting his spot-kick. Ex-reds Milan Baroš and Vladimír Šmicer were also smiling as the Czech Republic beat Norway 1-0 in Prague to qualify 2-0 on aggregate. John Arne Riise won his fiftieth cap for the losing side. Xabi Alonso, Arnaud Bühler, Fernando Morientes and future reds Philipp Degen, Raul Meireles, Martin Škrtel and Fernando Torres also played in play-offs that day, while Jerzy Dudek and future reds Sotirios Kyrgiakos and Kolo Touré were in friendly action. Meanwhile, Craig Bellamy won his first cap as a Blackburn Rovers player as Wales lost a friendly 1-0 in Cyprus under the guidance of John Toshack. Young international debutants 2010 – Conor Coady skippered England Under-18’s while winning his first cap at this level as they beat Poland 3-0 in a friendly in Wycombe, with Jack Robinson and future red Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also making their Under-18’s bows. On the same day, Danny Wilson netted on his senior international debut as Scotland beat the Faroe Islands 3-0 in a friendly at Pittodrie. David N’Gog and future red Charlie Adam were also in international action that day. Other reds games 1963 – Ian St. John and Roger Hunt struck late on as we beat Fulham 2-0 at Anfield. 1912 – Notts County held us to a goalless draw in L4. Milestones in reserve 1981 - Former second-string forward Ian Armstrong was born in Fazakerley. He never made our first team and spent four years with Port Vale whom he joined from us in June 2001. 1996 - Winger John Jeffers joined Stockport County from Port Vale on a free transfer. He had also failed to make the break-through at Anfield. More internationals in action 1932 – Future red Ernie Blenkinsop played for England in their goalless British International Championships meeting with Wales in Wrexham. 1966 – Roger Hunt appeared in England’s 5-1 European Championships qualifying thumping of Wales at Wembley. 1982 – Future reds John Barnes, Steve McMahon, Barry Venison and Paul Walsh all featured for England Under-21’s in their 1-0 defeat in Greece in a European Championships qualifier. 2015 – Future red Dominic Solanke played as England Under-21’s beat Switzerland 3-1 in Brighton. 2020 – Future red Ibrahima Konaté played for France Under-21’s as they beat Switzerland 3-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Caen. 2021 – Ex-red Rhian Brewster captained England Under-21’s as they lost a friendly 3-2 in Georgia, despite having been sent off in his previous appearance at this level. Winning the cup 1992 - We beat Second Division Sunderland 2-0 to win our fifth FA Cup. Ian Rush scored his fifth FA Cup Final goal, to break Stan Mortensen’s record, after Michael Thomas had opened the scoring, with Dean Saunders also hitting the bar. Graeme Souness led the team out just 48 hours after leaving hospital. However, the wrong medals were presented to each team, and so the two sides had to swap them afterwards! Ray Houghton was playing his 202nd and final reds game. Youngest ever 2010 - Left-back Jack Robinson became the reds’ youngest ever player, aged sixteen years and 250 days as we were held to a goalless draw at Hull City. This was Rafael Benítez’s last game in charge, and Dirk Kuyt’s 200th game for the club, while Nabil El Zhar made his 32nd and final reds appearance. 1995 – Steven Gerrard represented the reds for the first time ever, aged fourteen, as the ‘B’ team lost 2-1 at Manchester United, with the team including many winners of the FA Youth Cup a year later. Maxi’s treble 2011 - We secured our biggest every victory at Fulham, winning 5-2 after a sparkling performance. Maxi Rodríguez scored a hat-trick, netting in his third consecutive game while Dirk Kuyt struck in his fifth appearance in a row, with Luis Suárez also on target. Skipper Jamie Carragher played his 666th reds game, to move into second place on the all-time list, only behind Ian Callaghan. A quiet day Our only other two first-class games on this day in history both ended in stalemate. 1987 - We drew 3-3 at Chelsea, with Ian Rush, Steve McMahon and John Aldridge on target in our final game of the season, as we ended nine points behind Everton in second place. Gary Gillespie made his hundredth reds appearance in this game. Future red David Speedie was amongst the scorers, with Gordon Durie netting the first of his six goals past us and John Bumstead also on target. 1988 - John Aldridge struck a spectacular overhead kick as we were held 1-1 at Anfield by Luton Town to reach ninety points in our final League game of the campaign as Steve McMahon reached a century of League games for the reds. We had already clinched our seventeenth League title two weeks earlier. Nigel Spackman lined up alongside Gary Gillespie in central defence as Kenny Dalglish rested Alan Hansen ahead of the FA Cup Final, with Jan Mølby away on international duty. Unfortunately, Gillespie and Spackman collided when going for the same ball, resulting in them both taking to the Wembley turf in head bandages the following week! Before the game, the PFA’s Fair Play Trophy and a cheque for £2,000 was presented to Alan Hansen by PFA Secretary Gordon Taylor. The game was watched by 30,376 giving us an average home crowd of 39,682, the best in the division. 1973 - We were also due to play a game, but our UEFA Cup Final first leg meeting with Borussia Mönchengladbach at Anfield was postponed after only 27 minutes, due to a sodden pitch. Happy birthdays 1993 – Defender Andre Wisdom was born in Leeds. He joined the reds from Bradford City in January 2008, making 22 first-team appearances, netting on his debut at BSC Young Boys in September 2013. He left for Derby County for an initial £2m in July 2017. 1996 – Midfielder Cameron Brannagan was born in Salford. He was with the club since the age of eight, making nine senior appearances before joining Oxford United in January 2018. 1989 – Former reserves forward Michael Nardiello was born. 1968 - Neil Ruddock was born in Wandsworth, London. He played 152 games for the reds after being signed from Tottenham Hotspur for £2.5 million, bagging twelve goals and helping us to the Coca-Cola Cup in 1995 before moving on to West Ham United for £100,000 in July 1998. 1971 - Don Hutchison was born in Gateshead. He made only sixty first-team appearances following his £175,000 capture from Hartlepool United in November 1990, netting ten times, before leaving for Upton Park for £1.5m in August 1994. 1933 – Forward Arthur Rowley was born in Fazakerley in Liverpool. He joined the reds in May 1951, failing to score in eleven outings, moving on to Wrexham in November 1954. Reds trebles 1961 - Ian St. John bagged a hat-trick on his reds debut as we lost 4-3 to Everton in the Liverpool County F.A. Senior Cup Final at Goodison Park. 1942 - Cyril Done netted a treble as we beat Chester 3-0 in a Lancashire Cup First Round second leg match to progress 6-1 on aggregate. Unfortunately, Blackburn Rovers knocked us out at Anfield at the next hurdle. Beating the Hammers 2009 - We won 3-0 at West Ham United thanks to a Steven Gerrard brace and a goal from Ryan Babel. The skipper’s second goal came when keeper Robert Green saved his penalty, although he followed in to net the rebound. His first was his hundredth reds goal from open play. The comedy moment of the game came when David Di Michele performed a laughable dive that led to a booking. Ins and outs 1900 – Scottish centre-forward Peter Kyle moved on to Leicester Fosse after failing to score in five first-team games since arriving from Clyde in May 1899. 1905 – Inside-left Dickie Morris left the reds to join Leeds City, having only struck five times in 39 outings after signing from Druids in March 1902. 1906 – Forward John Lipsham arrived from Chester, failing to score in just three reds outings, returning to Chester in 1907. 1911 – Scottish international keeper Ken Campbell signed from Cambuslang Rovers for £10. He played 142 reds games before joining Partick Thistle in April 1920. 1957 – Forward Bobby Murdoch signed as a professional, having joined as an amateur two years earlier. He struck seven times in nineteen reds games as we struggled in the Second Division. He moved on to Barrow in September 1959. Sir Roger in Italy 1964 - Roger Hunt played for a Football League representative side as they lost 1-0 to an Italian League team at the San Siro in Milan. England bosses 1999 - Kevin Keegan resigned as Manager of Fulham, soon signing up as the England team boss. He had guided the Cottagers to the Second Division title, with an impressive 101 points, in his one season in charge. 2019 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s for the last time as they beat Sweden 3-1 in a European Championships Finals group game in Dublin. Testimonial defeat 1967 - We took part in a testimonial match for George Curtis and Mick Kearns, losing 2-1 to Coventry City at Highfield Road, with Roger Hunt on target. Dads again 2006 - Steven Gerrard became the father of his second daughter, Lexie. On the same day, Robbie Fowler became a dad for the fourth time, with his first son, named Jacob. For and against England 1929 – Future reds Ernie Blenkinsop and Tom Cooper both turned out for England as they won a friendly 4-1 in France. 1942 - Reds keeper George Poland played for England as they lost 1-0 to Wales at Ninian Park in a Wartime International. 2004 – Future red Besian Idrizaj played for Austria Under-17’s as they lost 1-0 to England in a European Championships Finals group game in France. 2009 – Christopher Buchtmann featured as Germany Under-17’s thumped England 4-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Jena, with future red Jonjo Shelvey on the losing side while winning his seventh and final cap at this level. 2011 – Brad Smith netted his only goal for England Under-17’s in their 3-0 win in a European Championships Finals group game in Serbia, with Adam Morgan also featuring. On the same day, Samed Yeşil scored the only goal of Germany’s meeting with Romania in the same competition, with fellow future red Emre Can also in action. 2014 – Future reds Joe Gomez and Dominic Solanke both represented England Under-17’s as they beat Malta 3-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Ta’ Qali. Also on target 2017 – Dominik Szoboszlai struck twice while captaining Hungary Under-17’s as they thumped the Faroe Islands 4-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Croatia. Fellow future red Ozan Kabak played for Turkey in the same competition in their 2-1 defeat of Italy. On their way out 1936 – Ex-reds reserves outside-left Jimmy Kelly played for the Irish Free State for the last of four times, grabbing his only two goals for them in their 5-1 friendly win in Luxembourg. 2012 – Ex-reds centre-forward Neil Mellor announced his retirement from playing, aged 29, following a serious knee injury. Avi the Olympian 1979 - Future red Avi Cohen played in Israel’s 1-1 Olympics qualifying draw against Spain in Murcia. Red tonkings 1994 - Ian Rush bagged a brace, with John Barnes, Don Hutchison and Jamie Redknapp also scoring in a 5-0 SDS Challenge Series victory over Shelbourne at Tolka Park in Dublin. 1945 - We thumped Preston North End 5-1 in a Wartime League game at Anfield, with Phil Taylor and Les Shannon both netting twice, and George Kaye bagging a penalty. First cap 2019 – Future red Melkamu Frauendorf debuted for the German Under-15’s as they lost 2-1 to the Netherlands in Drenthe. On the move 2005 - Former reserves forward Ian Armstrong was released by Port Vale after seventeen goals in 101 outings. 2011 – Future reds loanee Nuri Şahin joined Real Madrid from Borussia Dortmund for €10m. However, he only made ten senior appearances while in Spain, netting once, before returning to Dortmund. Also in international action 1937 - Andy Beattie played for Scotland in their 1-1 friendly encounter with Austria in Vienna. He guested with the reds during the war, and later joined the backroom staff at Anfield after a successful management career. 1994 – Future red Rigobert Song featured as Cameroon beat Greece 3-0 in a tournament game in Piraeus. 2016 – Future red Ozan Kabak played for Turkey Under-16’s in their 2-0 friendly defeat by Spain in Portugal. Meanwhile, ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s as they beat France 2-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Azerbaijan.

In comes Johnno 2009 – Right-back Glen Johnson signed from Portsmouth for £17.5m. He bagged nine goals in 200 outings before leaving the club to join Stoke City in July 2015, helping us to claim the League Cup in 2012 as well as consolidating his position as an England regular. On the same day, Djibril Cissé joined Panathinaikos from Olympique de Marseille for €8m, helping them to claim the domestic double in his first season, their first trophies in six years. A European champion 1992 - Future red Torben Piechnik won a European Championship winners’ medal as Denmark beat Germany 2-0 in the Final in Gothenburg. Fellow future red Karl-Heinz Riedle also played. This was Piechnik’s final cap as a Boldklubben 1903 player. In comes Ronnie 1990 - Israeli forward Ronnie Rosenthal was signed from Belgian club Standard de Liège for £1m after having been on loan for several months. He netted a total of 22 times in his 97 first-team games for the reds.
