Red arrivals 1914 - Inside-right Fred Pagnam joined from Blackpool for £75. He struck an astonishing thirty times in just 39 reds games, moving to Arsenal in October 1919. He later had a successful managerial career with Watford and the Turkish national side, amongst others. 1937 – Scottish left-winger George Paterson signed from the Hall Russell’s works team. He struck once in three outings, moving on to Swindon Town for their record fee in October 1946. He later returned to Anfield in a coaching role under Bill Shankly. Ephraim the first 1921 - Full-back Ephraim Longworth became the first red to captain England, aged 33 years and 231 days, as he won his second cap in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Belgium in Brussels. Clubmate Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers netted his first England goal in the same game. Wembley disappointment 1977 - Our first treble dream died as we lost the FA Cup Final to Manchester United. Jimmy Case equalised just two minutes after Stuart Pearson had given United the lead. However, only three minutes later Jimmy Greenhoff scored the winning goal, one of his five past us, to take the cup to Old Trafford for the first time in fourteen years. This remains our only first-class game on this day in history. Farewell Lucas 2017 – Lucas Leiva played his 346th and last reds game as we beat Middlesbrough 3-0 at Anfield to secure UEFA Champions League football for the next season and relegate the visitors. Gini Wijnaldum opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time, with Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana on target after the break. Striking first caps 1980 - Ian Rush won his first full cap for Wales, as a substitute in their 1-0 defeat by Scotland in the British International Championships at Hampden Park. Kenny Dalglish and ex-red Joey Jones both also featured. 1975 – Ipswich Town’s David Johnson netted a brace on his England debut as they drew 2-2 with Wales in the same competition. John Toshack bagged his final goal as a reds player in this game, while Ray Clemence also played. Bobby the boss 1982 - 1950’s wing-half Bobby Campbell was appointed Manager of Portsmouth. He stayed in charge for two years, with his signings including Neil Webb and Mark Hateley. He led them to the old Third Division title in his first season in charge, and kept them up the following season, but was then sacked and replaced by Alan Ball. Births and death 1963 - Danish defender Torben Piechnik was born in Copenhagen. He only played 24 times after Graeme Souness signed him from F.C. København for £500,000 in September 1992, having helped his country to a shock win at Euro ’92, but Roy Evans released him after just two seasons at Anfield. 1896 – Inside-left Hector Lawson was born in Shettleston, Glasgow. He signed from Rangers in January 1924, failing to score in sixteen outings before joining Airdrieonians in August 1925. 1994 – Scottish centre-half Norman Low died. He joined the reds in October 1933 but only played thirteen times while at Anfield, deputising for Tom Bradshaw, before moving on to Newport County in November 1936. Award winners 2001 - Gérard Houllier was given a special Nationwide award, having bizarrely been pipped to the Manager Of The Year trophy by Ipswich Town boss George Burley despite leading the reds to a cup treble and third place in the League. 2018 - Mohamed Salah was named PFA Fans’ Player of the Year for the first time, after a stunning 44 goals in 52 games in his first campaign with the reds. More reds on target 1998 - Vladimír Šmicer scored in his third consecutive Czech Republic game as they beat Paraguay 1-0 in a Kirin Cup game in Japan. 2002 - Michael Owen netted as skipper in England’s 1-1 draw with South Korea in a pre-World Cup friendly. Emile Heskey, Danny Murphy, ex-red David James and future red Joe Cole all also played. Milan Baroš featured as the Czech Republic Under-21’s drew 1-1 with Greece in the European Championships in Switzerland on the same day. 2008 – Reserves forward Krisztián Németh grabbed a brace, including a penalty, as Hungary Under-19’s beat Cyprus 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Székesfehérvár, with clubmate András Simon making an appearance from off the bench. 2010 – Future red Fabio Borini netted for Italy Under-19’s in their 2-0 friendly defeat of the Czech Republic in Udine, while Jari Litmanen won his 132nd cap for Finland as they lost 2-0 in Estonia. On the same day, Conor Coady skippered England Under-17’s as they beat Greece 1-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Liechtenstein, with Andre Wisdom also featuring. European champions 2014 – Future red Dominic Solanke netted his last goal at this level as England Under-17’s beat the Netherlands on penalties after their European Championships Final finished 1-1 in Malta, with fellow future red Joe Gomez also featuring. Wrong and right for Wright 1991 - Future red Mark Wright skippered England for the only time, scoring an own goal as they beat the USSR 3-1 in a friendly at Wembley. John Barnes and Peter Beardsley both also played. 1988 - Barnes and Beardsley both also represented their country when England beat a Scotland side that included Steve Nicol 1-0 in the Rous Cup at Wembley. Poland for Wales 1939 - Future reds keeper George Poland won his second and final official cap for Wales as they lost 2-1 to France in a friendly in Paris. He played a further four times in Wartime games while on our books. Saint turned sinner 1961 – Ian St. John scored and was then sent off for kicking out as we drew a friendly 1-1 at Slovakian side Tatran Prešov. For Stan and Tony 2000 - We took part in a testimonial match for Steve Staunton and Tony Cascarino, losing 4-2 to an Irish XI at Lansdowne Road. Our goals came from Emile Heskey and Michael Owen. Derby joy 1944 - We beat Everton 5-2 in a friendly at Anfield in aid of the Lord Mayor’s War Fund. Don Welsh bagged a treble, with Billy Liddell and Jack Balmer also on target as all five goals came within an eight-minute spell. Taylor for England Phil Taylor twice represented his country on this day in history. 1947 - He featured in a goalless B international in Switzerland. 1950 - He played alongside clubmate Jimmy Payne as England B won an unofficial international 2-1 in Luxembourg, with Billy Liddell also in international action. On the move 1999 - Former reserves forward Paul Dalglish, King Kenny’s son, was sold to Norwich City from Newcastle United for £300,000, after a successful loan spell. However, he only bagged two goals in a total of 48 games for the Canaries. 2001 - Robbie Keane was sold to Leeds United from Internazionale for £12m, after nine goals in twenty outings during a loan spell at Elland Road the previous season. 2007 - Ex-reds reserves forward John Miles signed for Accrington Stanley on a free transfer from Macclesfield Town. He netted just seven times in 111 games for them before joining Conference National side Fleetwood Town in June 2010. 2015 - Ex-reds midfielder Danny Guthrie was released by Reading after five goals in 69 games. On the same day, Jordon Ibe signed a new contract with the reds. 2016 – Reserves forward Jerome Sinclair agreed to sign for Watford on 1st July, having become our youngest ever player in September 2012 aged sixteen years and six days. He struck once in five senior reds games in total and netted once in fourteen outings for the Hornets before his contract expired in the summer of 2021, spending much of his time out on loan. Robbo for the Irish Future red Michael Robinson played for the Republic of Ireland in friendlies on this day in consecutive years. 1981 - They lost 3-0 to West Germany B in Bremen 1982 – He played in a 1-0 defeat in Chile, with future reds Assistant Manager Sean O’Driscoll making his debut. Tony starts a run 1969 - Ex-red Tony Hateley scored in the first of all seven games on an FA Tour, grabbing a treble as an England side beat Tahiti 4-1 in Papeete. He netted a total of seventeen goals on the trip. 1961 – Alan A’Court also played in an FA Tour game as England won 4-2 in Hong Kong. European disappointment 2008 – Ex-red Nicolas Anelka had a penalty saved in the UEFA Champions League Final for Chelsea as they lost 6-5 in the shoot-out to Manchester United in Moscow, after the game had ended 1-1 at both full time and after extra time. Future red Joe Cole also featured for the losing side. Also in international action 1938 – Future reds boss Don Welsh played for England as they lost a friendly 2-1 in Switzerland. 1977 – Glenn Hysén played for Sweden Under-18’s in their 4-1 defeat by Bulgaria in a European Championships Finals group game in Belgium. 1978 – Steve Heighway and future red Mark Lawrenson both featured as the Republic of Ireland shared a goalless friendly with Norway in Oslo. 1985 – Future red Barry Venison appeared for England Under-21’s in their 3-1 defeat in a European Championships qualifier in Finland. 1997 – Mark Kennedy and ex-reds Ray Houghton and Steve Staunton all played for Ireland in their 5-0 World Cup qualifying thumping of Liechtenstein at Lansdowne Road, with future red Vegard Heggem featuring for Norway Under-21’s as they lost 3-1 to Denmark in Grimstad. 2003 – John Welsh played for England Under-19’s, with Jon Otsemobor turning out for the Under-20’s in the same day. 2006 – John Toshack took charge of a Wales side that beat the Basque Country 1-0 in Bilbao, with future reds Craig Bellamy and Paul Jones both in action. 2019 - Rhys Williams played for England Under-18’s as they drew 2-2 in Slovakia.

Winning the cup 1992 - We beat Second Division Sunderland 2-0 to win our fifth FA Cup. Ian Rush scored his fifth FA Cup Final goal, to break Stan Mortensen’s record, after Michael Thomas had opened the scoring, with Dean Saunders also hitting the bar. Graeme Souness led the team out just 48 hours after leaving hospital. However, the wrong medals were presented to each team, and so the two sides had to swap them afterwards! Ray Houghton was playing his 202nd and final reds game. Youngest ever 2010 - Left-back Jack Robinson became the reds’ youngest ever player, aged sixteen years and 250 days as we were held to a goalless draw at Hull City. This was Rafael Benítez’s last game in charge, and Dirk Kuyt’s 200th game for the club, while Nabil El Zhar made his 32nd and final reds appearance. 1995 – Steven Gerrard represented the reds for the first time ever, aged fourteen, as the ‘B’ team lost 2-1 at Manchester United, with the team including many winners of the FA Youth Cup a year later. Maxi’s treble 2011 - We secured our biggest every victory at Fulham, winning 5-2 after a sparkling performance. Maxi Rodríguez scored a hat-trick, netting in his third consecutive game while Dirk Kuyt struck in his fifth appearance in a row, with Luis Suárez also on target. Skipper Jamie Carragher played his 666th reds game, to move into second place on the all-time list, only behind Ian Callaghan. A quiet day Our only other two first-class games on this day in history both ended in stalemate. 1987 - We drew 3-3 at Chelsea, with Ian Rush, Steve McMahon and John Aldridge on target in our final game of the season, as we ended nine points behind Everton in second place. Gary Gillespie made his hundredth reds appearance in this game. Future red David Speedie was amongst the scorers, with Gordon Durie netting the first of his six goals past us and John Bumstead also on target. 1988 - John Aldridge struck a spectacular overhead kick as we were held 1-1 at Anfield by Luton Town to reach ninety points in our final League game of the campaign as Steve McMahon reached a century of League games for the reds. We had already clinched our seventeenth League title two weeks earlier. Nigel Spackman lined up alongside Gary Gillespie in central defence as Kenny Dalglish rested Alan Hansen ahead of the FA Cup Final, with Jan Mølby away on international duty. Unfortunately, Gillespie and Spackman collided when going for the same ball, resulting in them both taking to the Wembley turf in head bandages the following week! Before the game, the PFA’s Fair Play Trophy and a cheque for £2,000 was presented to Alan Hansen by PFA Secretary Gordon Taylor. The game was watched by 30,376 giving us an average home crowd of 39,682, the best in the division. 1973 - We were also due to play a game, but our UEFA Cup Final first leg meeting with Borussia Mönchengladbach at Anfield was postponed after only 27 minutes, due to a sodden pitch. Happy birthdays 1993 – Defender Andre Wisdom was born in Leeds. He joined the reds from Bradford City in January 2008, making 22 first-team appearances, netting on his debut at BSC Young Boys in September 2013. He left for Derby County for an initial £2m in July 2017. 1996 – Midfielder Cameron Brannagan was born in Salford. He was with the club since the age of eight, making nine senior appearances before joining Oxford United in January 2018. 1989 – Former reserves forward Michael Nardiello was born. 1968 - Neil Ruddock was born in Wandsworth, London. He played 152 games for the reds after being signed from Tottenham Hotspur for £2.5 million, bagging twelve goals and helping us to the Coca-Cola Cup in 1995 before moving on to West Ham United for £100,000 in July 1998. 1971 - Don Hutchison was born in Gateshead. He made only sixty first-team appearances following his £175,000 capture from Hartlepool United in November 1990, netting ten times, before leaving for Upton Park for £1.5m in August 1994. 1933 – Forward Arthur Rowley was born in Fazakerley in Liverpool. He joined the reds in May 1951, failing to score in eleven outings, moving on to Wrexham in November 1954. Reds trebles 1961 - Ian St. John bagged a hat-trick on his reds debut as we lost 4-3 to Everton in the Liverpool County F.A. Senior Cup Final at Goodison Park. 1942 - Cyril Done netted a treble as we beat Chester 3-0 in a Lancashire Cup First Round second leg match to progress 6-1 on aggregate. Unfortunately, Blackburn Rovers knocked us out at Anfield at the next hurdle. Beating the Hammers 2009 - We won 3-0 at West Ham United thanks to a Steven Gerrard brace and a goal from Ryan Babel. The skipper’s second goal came when keeper Robert Green saved his penalty, although he followed in to net the rebound. His first was his hundredth reds goal from open play. The comedy moment of the game came when David Di Michele performed a laughable dive that led to a booking. Ins and outs 1900 – Scottish centre-forward Peter Kyle moved on to Leicester Fosse after failing to score in five first-team games since arriving from Clyde in May 1899. 1905 – Inside-left Dickie Morris left the reds to join Leeds City, having only struck five times in 39 outings after signing from Druids in March 1902. 1906 – Forward John Lipsham arrived from Chester, failing to score in just three reds outings, returning to Chester in 1907. 1911 – Scottish international keeper Ken Campbell signed from Cambuslang Rovers for £10. He played 142 reds games before joining Partick Thistle in April 1920. 1957 – Forward Bobby Murdoch signed as a professional, having joined as an amateur two years earlier. He struck seven times in nineteen reds games as we struggled in the Second Division. He moved on to Barrow in September 1959. Sir Roger in Italy 1964 - Roger Hunt played for a Football League representative side as they lost 1-0 to an Italian League team at the San Siro in Milan. England bosses 1999 - Kevin Keegan resigned as Manager of Fulham, soon signing up as the England team boss. He had guided the Cottagers to the Second Division title, with an impressive 101 points, in his one season in charge. 2019 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s for the last time as they beat Sweden 3-1 in a European Championships Finals group game in Dublin. Testimonial defeat 1967 - We took part in a testimonial match for George Curtis and Mick Kearns, losing 2-1 to Coventry City at Highfield Road, with Roger Hunt on target. Dads again 2006 - Steven Gerrard became the father of his second daughter, Lexie. On the same day, Robbie Fowler became a dad for the fourth time, with his first son, named Jacob. For and against England 1929 – Future reds Ernie Blenkinsop and Tom Cooper both turned out for England as they won a friendly 4-1 in France. 1942 - Reds keeper George Poland played for England as they lost 1-0 to Wales at Ninian Park in a Wartime International. 2004 – Future red Besian Idrizaj played for Austria Under-17’s as they lost 1-0 to England in a European Championships Finals group game in France. 2009 – Christopher Buchtmann featured as Germany Under-17’s thumped England 4-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Jena, with future red Jonjo Shelvey on the losing side while winning his seventh and final cap at this level. 2011 – Brad Smith netted his only goal for England Under-17’s in their 3-0 win in a European Championships Finals group game in Serbia, with Adam Morgan also featuring. On the same day, Samed Yeşil scored the only goal of Germany’s meeting with Romania in the same competition, with fellow future red Emre Can also in action. 2014 – Future reds Joe Gomez and Dominic Solanke both represented England Under-17’s as they beat Malta 3-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Ta’ Qali. Also on target 2017 – Dominik Szoboszlai struck twice while captaining Hungary Under-17’s as they thumped the Faroe Islands 4-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Croatia. Fellow future red Ozan Kabak played for Turkey in the same competition in their 2-1 defeat of Italy. On their way out 1936 – Ex-reds reserves outside-left Jimmy Kelly played for the Irish Free State for the last of four times, grabbing his only two goals for them in their 5-1 friendly win in Luxembourg. 2012 – Ex-reds centre-forward Neil Mellor announced his retirement from playing, aged 29, following a serious knee injury. Avi the Olympian 1979 - Future red Avi Cohen played in Israel’s 1-1 Olympics qualifying draw against Spain in Murcia. Red tonkings 1994 - Ian Rush bagged a brace, with John Barnes, Don Hutchison and Jamie Redknapp also scoring in a 5-0 SDS Challenge Series victory over Shelbourne at Tolka Park in Dublin. 1945 - We thumped Preston North End 5-1 in a Wartime League game at Anfield, with Phil Taylor and Les Shannon both netting twice, and George Kaye bagging a penalty. First cap 2019 – Future red Melkamu Frauendorf debuted for the German Under-15’s as they lost 2-1 to the Netherlands in Drenthe. On the move 2005 - Former reserves forward Ian Armstrong was released by Port Vale after seventeen goals in 101 outings. 2011 – Future reds loanee Nuri Şahin joined Real Madrid from Borussia Dortmund for €10m. However, he only made ten senior appearances while in Spain, netting once, before returning to Dortmund. Also in international action 1937 - Andy Beattie played for Scotland in their 1-1 friendly encounter with Austria in Vienna. He guested with the reds during the war, and later joined the backroom staff at Anfield after a successful management career. 1994 – Future red Rigobert Song featured as Cameroon beat Greece 3-0 in a tournament game in Piraeus. 2016 – Future red Ozan Kabak played for Turkey Under-16’s in their 2-0 friendly defeat by Spain in Portugal. Meanwhile, ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s as they beat France 2-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Azerbaijan.

The start of it all 1892 - Everton voted to move from Anfield. John Houlding was therefore left with an empty ground, but no team to play in it. Within six months, Liverpool FC had been formed and was on its way to taking the Lancashire League by storm. God strikes again 2006 - Robbie Fowler struck the first goal of his second reds spell, opening the scoring against Fulham at Anfield. Collins John equalised before an own goal from Michael Brown put us 2-1 ahead at the break. Fernando Morientes and Peter Crouch scored late on before Stephen Warnock grabbed his only ever goal for the club as we triumphed 5-1. 1997 – Fowler grabbed the opener at Nottingham Forest, but Ian Woan equalised as this League encounter ended 1-1, with Steve McManaman playing his 200th League game for the reds while Jamie Redknapp appeared for the reds for the 200th time in total. Masch off the mark 2008 - Javier Mascherano scored his first reds goal, a thunderous strike as we came from behind to beat Reading 2-1 at Anfield. Fernando Torres headed in a Steven Gerrard free-kick to net in his fourth consecutive game, to become the first red to score twenty League goals in a season since Robbie Fowler in 1995/96. This was our seventh straight victory in all competitions. Alberto off the mark 2010 - Alberto Aquilani scored his first reds goal as we thumped Portsmouth 4-1 at Anfield. Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel had already struck in the first half before the Italian netted our third goal in a six-minute spell. Torres added his second after the break with Nadir Belhadj nabbing a late consolation. 1947 – Albert Stubbins nabbed a brace as we won 2-1 at Fratton Park in a top-flight meeting, with right-half Harry Eastham playing his 68th and final reds game. Full-back Jim Harley reached a century of reds games. Happy birthdays 1946 - David Moores was born in Liverpool. He became Chairman in August 1991, remaining in charge until he sold his 51.5% of the shares in The Liverpool Football Club and Athletic Grounds Plc to George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks in February 2007. He resigned from the Board of Directors in June 2009. 1869 – Outside-left John Drummond was born in Edinburgh. He signed from Sheffield United in August 1894, scoring once in eighteen outings before moving on to Barnsley St. Peter’s the following year. Most recently 2021 – Diogo Jota netted the only goal behind closed doors at his former club Wolverhampton Wanderers. 2023 – We lost the second leg of our UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie 1-0 at Real Madrid, to crash out 6-2 on aggregate. Karim Benzema struck the most recent of his seven goals past us to date as the Spanish side ended our hopes in the competition for the third consecutive season. Seeing off the Portuguese We have twice on this day overcome Portuguese opposition to progress in European competition. 1978 - We defeated SL Benfica 4-1 at Anfield in the European Cup Third Round to go through 6-2 on aggregate, with Ian Callaghan scoring his 68th and final reds goal and Kenny Dalglish, Terry McDermott and Phil Neal also netting as Nené scored one of his three goals for Benfica against us. McDermott reached a century of reds games that evening. 2001 - We followed up a goalless away draw with a 2-0 home win over Porto in the UEFA Cup Quarter-final, thanks to Danny Murphy and Michael Owen both grabbing their first Anfield goals in Europe during a five-minute first-half spell. Goddard’s first 1902 - Outside-right ‘Graceful’ Arthur Goddard netted the first of his 77 reds goals in only his second game, as we drew 1-1 at Grimsby Town in a top-flight match. First and last games 1924 - Outside-right Archie Rawlings made his reds bow as Blackburn Rovers held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. He went on to net ten times in 67 reds games. 1930 - Outside-left Gordon Gunson debuted in our 2-0 win at Bolton Wanderers, with Jimmy Smith bagging both goals. 1950 - Defender Frank Christie made the first of his four reds appearances in a goalless draw at Manchester United. 1958 – Outside-right Tony McNamara played his tenth and last game as Billy Liddell netted the only goal of our Second Division trip to Lincoln City. Signing on 1930 – Keeper Andrew Aitken signed from Wallsend. He only ever made one senior reds appearance, in our 3-3 draw at Blackburn Rovers in December of that year, returning to amateur football with Mickley in April 1931. 1934 – Left-back Ernie Blenkinsop signed from Sheffield Wednesday for £6,500, having already earned 26 England caps. He played 71 reds games without scoring. He moved on to Cardiff City in November 1937. 1938 – Left-half Jimmy McInnes signed from Third Lanark for £5,500. He struck once in 48 outings, joining the administrative staff after retiring from playing in 1946, taking over as Club Secretary in 1955. He stayed in this role until May 1965, when he sadly hanged himself above the Archway Stile, the old turnstile between the Kop and Kemlyn Road stands, just four days after we had claimed the FA Cup for the first time. Red centurions 1952 - Inside-forward Kevin Baron made his hundredth reds appearance in a 3-3 draw at West Bromwich Albion. Billy Liddell, Bob Paisley and Albert Stubbins all struck, with Ronnie Allen netting two of his five goals against us and Reg Ryan also on target for the Baggies. 1975 – Kevin Keegan played his 200th game for the club with Phil Thompson reaching a century as Sheffield United held us to a goalless draw at Anfield with Emlyn Hughes guilty of a lame dive in an attempt to win a late penalty. 1913 – Right-back Ephraim Longworth reached a century of League games for the reds as we beat Middlesbrough 4-2 at Anfield, with half-back Harry Lowe bagging his second and final goal for the club and defender Ernest Peake netting for the sixth and last time. Arthur Metcalf also netted, with Jack Parkinson converting a penalty. Jackie Carr bagged two of his five strikes past us. Berry passes on 1953 - Forward Arthur Berry died on this day in 1953. Arthur won Olympic gold in both 1908 and 1912 but only made four senior reds appearances across two spells at Anfield. He was the son of Edwin Berry, who was reds Chairman in the late 1900’s. Cally for the League 1967 - Ian Callaghan played for the Football League as they beat a Scottish League side 3-0. Other birthdays 1910 - Jack ‘Nipper’ Roberts was born in Blundellsands. He only made one first team appearance after signing from Southport in May 1933, moving on to Wigan Athletic in June 1934. He was an all-round sportsman, even playing baseball for England. He became famous when he escaped from a prisoner-of-war camp in Italy, walking 400 miles to freedom despite a broken neck! 1928 - Keeper Dave Underwood was born in London. He signed from Watford for £7,000 in December 1953, playing fifty reds games before returning to Vicarage Road in July 1956. Michael misses 2000 - Michael Owen saw his penalty crash back off the bar but not over the line as Aston Villa held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. Jamie Carragher was playing his hundredth reds game. Backing out 1948 - Left-back Barney Ramsden left Anfield to join Sunderland. He had arrived on a free transfer from Sheffield Victoria in March 1935, helping us to claim the first post-war League title in 1947, making a total of 63 first-team appearances without notching. 1935 – Right-back Willie Steel was sold to Birmingham City for £5,000. He failed to score in 128 reds games after signing from St. Johnstone in September 1931. Poland for Wales 1939 - Future reds keeper George Poland made his senior debut for Wales, playing in their 3-1 British International Championships defeat of Ireland in Wrexham. He only won two full caps, plus a further four in wartime while on our books. Mixed fortunes against the Seasiders We have twice faced Blackpool in Wartime League matches on this day in history. 1919 - Harry Lewis struck a brace as we won 3-1 at Anfield, with Donald McKinlay also on target. 1941 - Willie Fagan netted twice from the spot as we lost 6-4 at Bloomfield Road, with Bob Paisley and Cyril Done also on target. Parry for Wales Reds right-half Maurice Parry twice played for Wales in the British International Championships on this day in history. 1902 - They thrashed Scotland 5-1 in Greenock, with future red Richard Morris also playing. 1909 - He played alongside clubmate Ernest Peake as they lost 2-0 to England at the City Ground in Nottingham. Clubmate Sam Hardy was in the England goal. On the same day, future red Billy Lacey played for Ireland in their 5-0 thumping by Scotland in Glasgow. 1920 - Hardy also represented his country as they lost 2-1 to Wales at Highbury in another British International Championships match, by which time he was playing for Aston Villa. Other reds games 1986 – We came from behind to win 2-1 at Southampton thanks to goals from John Wark and Ian Rush. 1980 – We beat Bristol City 3-1 at Ashton Gate. Ray Kennedy scored early on, with Kenny Dalglish then bagging a brace. 1969 – Ian St. John and Alun Evans stuck as we won 2-0 at Sunderland. 1939 – We held Huddersfield Town to a 1-1 draw at Leeds Road with Berry Nieuwenhuys on target. Newell departs 2007 - Mike Newell was sacked as Manager of Luton Town after publicly asking the Board of Directors where the money received from player sales had gone. American tie-up 2007 - The club announced an affiliation with the Long Island Junior Soccer League in New York. Also in international action 1899 – Ex-red Harry Bradshaw played for and England XI as they lost 2-1 to a Scottish side in a Players’ Union International at Crystal Palace. 1977 – Glenn Hysén played for the Swedish Under-18’s as they lost 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Denmark. 2015 – Future red Bobby Adekanye played for the Dutch Under-16’s in their 3-1 defeat of the USA. 2017 – Rafael Camacho played for Portugal Under-17’s as they lost 2-0 to Spain in a European Championships qualifier in Rio Maior.

Crazy Horse trots in 1967 – Emlyn Hughes signed from Blackpool for a club record £65,000, netting 49 times in 665 games. He helped us to claim two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers for £90,000 in August 1979. His greatest season was probably 1976/77 when he captained the side to within a whisker of a unique treble, as well as being voted the Football Writers’ Player of the Year. Sadly, he died in November 2004, aged just 57. Claiming the trophy yet again 2022 – We won the League Cup for a record ninth time by beating Chelsea 11-10 in a penalty shoot-out once the Final had ended goalless after two hours. All eleven reds players converted their spot-kicks, including goalie Caoimhín Kelleher, with Blues’ keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who had been brought on from the bench especially for the shoot-out, then sending his penalty over the crossbar. Incomings 2010 – Winger Raheem Sterling signed from Queens Park Rangers for £500,000. He bagged 23 goals in 129 reds games before being sold to Manchester City for an initial £44m in July 2015. 1912 – Forward Billy Lacey and centre-forward Tommy Gracie signed from Everton for £300 with winger Harold Uren heading in the opposite direction as part of the deal. Lacey played 259 times for the reds, including the FA Cup Final in 1914. He helped us to two League titles in the 1920’s, netting 29 times before crossing the Mersey to join New Brighton in June 1924. Gracie only managed to score five times in 34 reds games, returning north of the border to join Heart Of Midlothian for £400 in May 1914. Jonjo’s day 1992 – Ex-reds midfielder Jonjo Shelvey was born in Romford. He signed from Charlton Athletic for £1.7m in May 2010, having become their youngest ever player. He struck seven times in 69 senior appearances, moving on to Swansea City for an initial £5m in July 2013. Cardiff disappointment 2005 - We were beaten by Chelsea in the Final of the Carling Cup in Cardiff, 3-2 after extra time. John Arne Riise struck in the first minute, and we led until a Steven Gerrard own goal rescued the Blues with just eleven minutes left. Didier Drogba bagged one of his eleven goals against us with Mateja Kezman also netting before Antonio Núñez bagged a consolation, his only reds goal. We have faced Chelsea twice more on this day in history, also suffering defeat each time. 1932 - We lost an FA Cup Sixth Round tie 2-0 at Anfield when Hughie Gallacher netted one of his eight goals against the reds, with George Pearson also on target. 1999 - Michael Owen grabbed the consolation in our 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge in a Premiership meeting. This was the game in which Robbie Fowler infamously bent over to taunt Graeme Le Saux, while midfielder Jean-Michel Ferri made the first of his two substitute appearances for the reds, coming on to replace Paul Ince early in the second half. Jamie Redknapp played his 200th League game for the club. Happy birthdays 1948 - Left-back Alec Lindsay was born in Bury. He signed from his hometown club for £67,000 in March 1969 and netted eighteen times in 248 reds games, helping us to the League and UEFA Cup in 1973, and FA Cup and FA Charity Shield the following year, before leaving for Stoke City in September 1977. 1912 - Outside-left Alf Hanson was born in Bootle. He signed from Everton in November 1931 and scored 52 goals in 177 reds games before we received a club record £7,500 fee from Chelsea in July 1938, although he returned to guest sixteen times for the reds during the war, bagging another three goals. Forward Bill Kinghorn was born in Strathblane on exactly the same day. The Scotsman signed from Queens Park in April 1938 and netted four times in nineteen reds games, and another three times in eleven wartime matches. 1937 - Hanson struck on his 25th birthday as we were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by Brentford, with Jack Balmer also scoring. Bobby Reid bagged one of his five goals past us as Dave McCulloch nabbed one of his seven against the reds. 1907 - Forward Ted Harston was born in Monk Bretton, Barnsley. He joined the reds for £3,000 from Mansfield Town in June 1937, striking on his reds bow as we were thumped 6-1 at Chelsea that August. He bagged a brace in his second game but only played a further three games, returning to amateur football with Shorts in the Kent League in August 1939 after suffering a broken leg that ended his professional career. In charge 1991 - Ronnie Moran remained in temporary charge following Kenny Dalglish’s resignation as Everton knocked us out of the FA Cup in a Fifth Round second replay at Goodison, the last ever to be played in the competition. Ex-red Dave Watson headed the only goal of the game. 1978 - John Toshack was appointed Player/Manager of basement side Swansea City. He remained in charge for more than five years, as the Swans won 104 of their 250 games under his management, rising from the Fourth Division to the top flight in just four years, although they were relegated back to the Second Division in his final full season. Hodgson’s debut 1926 - South African forward Gordon Hodgson made his reds bow as Dick Forshaw struck early on in our 1-1 draw at Manchester City. Ex-Evertonian Tommy Browell netted his seventh and last goal against us. Billy Gillespie scored the last of his five goals past us, with Tommy Hynds also scoring. 1943 - William Wilson Hall bagged our consolation as we lost a Wartime League fixture 3-1 at Maine Road. On the same day, ex-reds keeper George Poland played for Wales as they lost 5-3 to England in a Wartime International at Wembley. More records for Mickey 2003 - Michael Owen scored in his fifteenth different European game, a then club record, as we beat an Auxerre side that featured future red Djibril Cissé 2-0 in the UEFA Cup Fourth Round second leg at Anfield, with Danny Murphy also on target. Owen’s goal was his twentieth in Europe, equalling Ian Rush’s club record. Most recently 2019 – We thumped Watford 5-0 at Anfield, with Sadio Mané scoring twice before the break. Divock Origi was on target in the second half, before Virgil van Dijk headed in a brace, as Trent Alexander-Arnold ended the match with three assists. 2017 – We lost 3-1 at Leicester City, with Jamie Vardy bagging two of his ten goals past us to date and Danny Drinkwater also on target, as Philippe Coutinho bagged our consolation in their first game after Claudio Ranieri’s sacking. Disappointment in the East End 1965 – We lost a top-flight fixture 2-1 at West Ham United, with Roger Hunt grabbing our goal. Geoff Hurst struck one of his nine goals against us, with Eddie Presland also on the scoresheet. 2011 – We went down 3-1 at Upton Park, with ex-Hammer Glen Johnson on target after Scott Parker and Demba Ba had put the Irons two goals ahead. Sam Gilligan scored twice, with Jack Parkinson reaching a century of reds strikes. In McKenna’s honour 1937 - A tablet in honour of John McKenna was unveiled in the Anfield entrance hall by Mr W.C. Cuff, the Football League Vice Chairman and Everton Chairman. McKenna had managed the reds for our first four years, as well as serving as a Director for thirty years. Maurice’s last 1909 – We were held to a 1-1 draw by Notts County in L4 with Bobby Robinson scoring our goal as right-half Maurice Parry played his 221st and last reds game. International start and end 2012 – Future red Mohamed Salah scored his first senior goal while winning his third cap for Egypt, in their 5-0 friendly thumping of Kenya in Qatar. 1974 - Future red Joey Jones made his Under-23’s debut as Wales lost 3-0 to Scotland at the Pittodrie Stadium. 2011 – Keeper Tyrell Bedford won his second and final cap for England Under-17’s as they drew 2-2 with Portugal in the Algarve Tournament, with Jack Dunn and Matty Regan both also in action. On the same day, future red Samed Yeşil scored as Germany drew 1-1 with Romania in the same competition, with fellow future red Emre Can also featuring. Avi for Israel Avi Cohen twice represented his country on this day in history. 1985 - He won his 32nd cap as they were held to a goalless draw by the Republic of Ireland in a friendly in Tel-Aviv. Jim Beglin, Ronnie Whelan, future red Ronnie Rosenthal and ex-red Kevin Sheedy all also played. Dave Walsh struck the last of his four goals past us just before half time.
