Red arrivals 1914 - Inside-right Fred Pagnam joined from Blackpool for £75. He struck an astonishing thirty times in just 39 reds games, moving to Arsenal in October 1919. He later had a successful managerial career with Watford and the Turkish national side, amongst others. 1937 – Scottish left-winger George Paterson signed from the Hall Russell’s works team. He struck once in three outings, moving on to Swindon Town for their record fee in October 1946. He later returned to Anfield in a coaching role under Bill Shankly. Ephraim the first 1921 - Full-back Ephraim Longworth became the first red to captain England, aged 33 years and 231 days, as he won his second cap in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Belgium in Brussels. Clubmate Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers netted his first England goal in the same game. Wembley disappointment 1977 - Our first treble dream died as we lost the FA Cup Final to Manchester United. Jimmy Case equalised just two minutes after Stuart Pearson had given United the lead. However, only three minutes later Jimmy Greenhoff scored the winning goal, one of his five past us, to take the cup to Old Trafford for the first time in fourteen years. This remains our only first-class game on this day in history. Farewell Lucas 2017 – Lucas Leiva played his 346th and last reds game as we beat Middlesbrough 3-0 at Anfield to secure UEFA Champions League football for the next season and relegate the visitors. Gini Wijnaldum opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time, with Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana on target after the break. Striking first caps 1980 - Ian Rush won his first full cap for Wales, as a substitute in their 1-0 defeat by Scotland in the British International Championships at Hampden Park. Kenny Dalglish and ex-red Joey Jones both also featured. 1975 – Ipswich Town’s David Johnson netted a brace on his England debut as they drew 2-2 with Wales in the same competition. John Toshack bagged his final goal as a reds player in this game, while Ray Clemence also played. Bobby the boss 1982 - 1950’s wing-half Bobby Campbell was appointed Manager of Portsmouth. He stayed in charge for two years, with his signings including Neil Webb and Mark Hateley. He led them to the old Third Division title in his first season in charge, and kept them up the following season, but was then sacked and replaced by Alan Ball. Births and death 1963 - Danish defender Torben Piechnik was born in Copenhagen. He only played 24 times after Graeme Souness signed him from F.C. København for £500,000 in September 1992, having helped his country to a shock win at Euro ’92, but Roy Evans released him after just two seasons at Anfield. 1896 – Inside-left Hector Lawson was born in Shettleston, Glasgow. He signed from Rangers in January 1924, failing to score in sixteen outings before joining Airdrieonians in August 1925. 1994 – Scottish centre-half Norman Low died. He joined the reds in October 1933 but only played thirteen times while at Anfield, deputising for Tom Bradshaw, before moving on to Newport County in November 1936. Award winners 2001 - Gérard Houllier was given a special Nationwide award, having bizarrely been pipped to the Manager Of The Year trophy by Ipswich Town boss George Burley despite leading the reds to a cup treble and third place in the League. 2018 - Mohamed Salah was named PFA Fans’ Player of the Year for the first time, after a stunning 44 goals in 52 games in his first campaign with the reds. More reds on target 1998 - Vladimír Šmicer scored in his third consecutive Czech Republic game as they beat Paraguay 1-0 in a Kirin Cup game in Japan. 2002 - Michael Owen netted as skipper in England’s 1-1 draw with South Korea in a pre-World Cup friendly. Emile Heskey, Danny Murphy, ex-red David James and future red Joe Cole all also played. Milan Baroš featured as the Czech Republic Under-21’s drew 1-1 with Greece in the European Championships in Switzerland on the same day. 2008 – Reserves forward Krisztián Németh grabbed a brace, including a penalty, as Hungary Under-19’s beat Cyprus 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Székesfehérvár, with clubmate András Simon making an appearance from off the bench. 2010 – Future red Fabio Borini netted for Italy Under-19’s in their 2-0 friendly defeat of the Czech Republic in Udine, while Jari Litmanen won his 132nd cap for Finland as they lost 2-0 in Estonia. On the same day, Conor Coady skippered England Under-17’s as they beat Greece 1-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Liechtenstein, with Andre Wisdom also featuring. European champions 2014 – Future red Dominic Solanke netted his last goal at this level as England Under-17’s beat the Netherlands on penalties after their European Championships Final finished 1-1 in Malta, with fellow future red Joe Gomez also featuring. Wrong and right for Wright 1991 - Future red Mark Wright skippered England for the only time, scoring an own goal as they beat the USSR 3-1 in a friendly at Wembley. John Barnes and Peter Beardsley both also played. 1988 - Barnes and Beardsley both also represented their country when England beat a Scotland side that included Steve Nicol 1-0 in the Rous Cup at Wembley. Poland for Wales 1939 - Future reds keeper George Poland won his second and final official cap for Wales as they lost 2-1 to France in a friendly in Paris. He played a further four times in Wartime games while on our books. Saint turned sinner 1961 – Ian St. John scored and was then sent off for kicking out as we drew a friendly 1-1 at Slovakian side Tatran Prešov. For Stan and Tony 2000 - We took part in a testimonial match for Steve Staunton and Tony Cascarino, losing 4-2 to an Irish XI at Lansdowne Road. Our goals came from Emile Heskey and Michael Owen. Derby joy 1944 - We beat Everton 5-2 in a friendly at Anfield in aid of the Lord Mayor’s War Fund. Don Welsh bagged a treble, with Billy Liddell and Jack Balmer also on target as all five goals came within an eight-minute spell. Taylor for England Phil Taylor twice represented his country on this day in history. 1947 - He featured in a goalless B international in Switzerland. 1950 - He played alongside clubmate Jimmy Payne as England B won an unofficial international 2-1 in Luxembourg, with Billy Liddell also in international action. On the move 1999 - Former reserves forward Paul Dalglish, King Kenny’s son, was sold to Norwich City from Newcastle United for £300,000, after a successful loan spell. However, he only bagged two goals in a total of 48 games for the Canaries. 2001 - Robbie Keane was sold to Leeds United from Internazionale for £12m, after nine goals in twenty outings during a loan spell at Elland Road the previous season. 2007 - Ex-reds reserves forward John Miles signed for Accrington Stanley on a free transfer from Macclesfield Town. He netted just seven times in 111 games for them before joining Conference National side Fleetwood Town in June 2010. 2015 - Ex-reds midfielder Danny Guthrie was released by Reading after five goals in 69 games. On the same day, Jordon Ibe signed a new contract with the reds. 2016 – Reserves forward Jerome Sinclair agreed to sign for Watford on 1st July, having become our youngest ever player in September 2012 aged sixteen years and six days. He struck once in five senior reds games in total and netted once in fourteen outings for the Hornets before his contract expired in the summer of 2021, spending much of his time out on loan. Robbo for the Irish Future red Michael Robinson played for the Republic of Ireland in friendlies on this day in consecutive years. 1981 - They lost 3-0 to West Germany B in Bremen 1982 – He played in a 1-0 defeat in Chile, with future reds Assistant Manager Sean O’Driscoll making his debut. Tony starts a run 1969 - Ex-red Tony Hateley scored in the first of all seven games on an FA Tour, grabbing a treble as an England side beat Tahiti 4-1 in Papeete. He netted a total of seventeen goals on the trip. 1961 – Alan A’Court also played in an FA Tour game as England won 4-2 in Hong Kong. European disappointment 2008 – Ex-red Nicolas Anelka had a penalty saved in the UEFA Champions League Final for Chelsea as they lost 6-5 in the shoot-out to Manchester United in Moscow, after the game had ended 1-1 at both full time and after extra time. Future red Joe Cole also featured for the losing side. Also in international action 1938 – Future reds boss Don Welsh played for England as they lost a friendly 2-1 in Switzerland. 1977 – Glenn Hysén played for Sweden Under-18’s in their 4-1 defeat by Bulgaria in a European Championships Finals group game in Belgium. 1978 – Steve Heighway and future red Mark Lawrenson both featured as the Republic of Ireland shared a goalless friendly with Norway in Oslo. 1985 – Future red Barry Venison appeared for England Under-21’s in their 3-1 defeat in a European Championships qualifier in Finland. 1997 – Mark Kennedy and ex-reds Ray Houghton and Steve Staunton all played for Ireland in their 5-0 World Cup qualifying thumping of Liechtenstein at Lansdowne Road, with future red Vegard Heggem featuring for Norway Under-21’s as they lost 3-1 to Denmark in Grimstad. 2003 – John Welsh played for England Under-19’s, with Jon Otsemobor turning out for the Under-20’s in the same day. 2006 – John Toshack took charge of a Wales side that beat the Basque Country 1-0 in Bilbao, with future reds Craig Bellamy and Paul Jones both in action. 2019 - Rhys Williams played for England Under-18’s as they drew 2-2 in Slovakia. -
In comes Jocky 1977 - Alan Hansen signed from Partick Thistle for £100,000. He went on to make 620 reds appearances, netting fourteen times as he helped us to three European Cups, eight League titles, two FA Cups, three League Cups and four FA Charity Shields. Final strikes 1996 - Ian Rush scored his 346th and final reds goal in a 2-2 draw at Manchester City, with our other strike being a Steve Lomas own goal, the hundredth time we had benefited to date in this way in the League, as City were relegated. We were actually two goals up before Uwe Rosler and Kit Symons struck for the home side. 1981 – Centre-half Colin Irwin bagged his third and last goal while playing his 44th and final game for the club, with defender Richard Money appearing for the seventeenth and final time. Ray Kennedy also scored as we won 2-1 at Middlesbrough. David Shearer netted one of his four goals past us as Terry McDermott played his 200th League game for the reds. European disappointment 1966 - We played our first European final against Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund at Hampden Park in the European Cup Winners’ Cup. The game ended 1-1 after ninety minutes, with Roger Hunt bagging our equaliser after Siegfried Held’s goal, but with eleven minutes of extra time remaining, Reinhard ‘Stan’ Libuda’s shot hit the crossbar, and rebounded off Ron Yeats to hand the cup to Dortmund, who became the first German side to claim a European trophy. 1981 - A commemorative match was staged at the Westfalenstadion in aid of the children’s holiday party in Dortmund, an event organised for children staying at home during the summer break! Wembley disappointment 2012 – We lost the FA Cup Final 2-1 to Chelsea, falling behind to an early goal from Ramires. Didier Drogba struck his eleventh and final goal against us after the break. Substitute Andy Carroll pulled a goal back, his eleventh and last one for the reds, before his late header was deemed not to have crossed the line when pushed onto the bar by keeper Petr Čech. Heading to another European final 2016 – We beat Villarreal 3-0 at Anfield to reach the UEFA Europa League Final in Basel, 3-1 on aggregate. Bruno Soriano diverted a Daniel Sturridge strike into his own net early on, with Sturridge putting us ahead after an hour before Víctor Ruiz was sent off for the visitors. Adam Lallana completed the scoring. The dream is over 2014 - Joe Allen scored a club record 59th first-half goal in a season at Crystal Palace, with Damien Delaney putting through his own net after the break. Two minutes later, Luis Suárez scored his 82nd and final reds goal, a club record fourteenth away goal of the season and joint all-Premier League record 31st goal in a campaign as we took a three-goal lead, reaching a new club record of 48 away League goals. This was an all-Premier League record 21st time in a season that we had scored three or more goals in a game. However, Delaney pulled one back with just eleven minutes remaining before Dwight Gayle nabbed a brace as the game ended 3-3 to deliver our League title hopes a near-decisive blow, two of his five goals past us to date, although we went back to the top of the table with less than a week of the season to go. Victor Moses came off the bench for his 22nd and last reds game on loan from Chelsea. Happy birthday Yossi 1980 - Israeli midfielder Yossi Benayoun was born in Dimona. He arrived from West Ham United in a £5m deal in July 2007, and bagged 29 goals in 134 reds games, including hat-tricks against Beşiktaş JK, Havant & Waterlooville and Burnley. He was sold to Chelsea in July 2010 for a reported £5m. 1933 – South African half-back Hugh Gerhardi was born. He signed from Johannesburg-based Thistle in August 1952 but only played six senior games before returning to his homeland after just one season. 1994 – Spanish loanee right-back Javier Manquillo was born in Madrid. He arrived from Club Atlético de Madrid in August 2014 for a potential two-year spell, making nineteen senior appearances before returning after a single campaign. Treble hat-tricks 1990 - John Barnes scored a hat-trick as we came from behind in our 6-1 win at Coventry City, taking him to 22 League goals that season, with Kevin Gallacher bagging the home side’s opener. Ronnie Rosenthal netted a brace, with Ian Rush also on target in our final game of the season, in which we had clinched the title for the eighteenth and most recent time. This was Kenny Dalglish’s 200th League game in charge. 2001 - Michael Owen scored a hat-trick as we beat Newcastle United 3-0 at Anfield in Gérard Houllier’s hundredth League game in sole charge. 1930 – Jimmy Smith struck four times in our 6-0 thumping of Tranmere Rovers in a Birkenhead Hospitals Cup game at Prenton Park. Robert Done converted a penalty, with Dave Wright also netting. Despair against the Mancs 1928 - We were thrashed 6-1 at Manchester United to end the season in fifteenth, with Joe Spence netting three of his five goals past us. Gordon Hodgson grabbed our goal with Bill Rawlings bagging a brace and Jim Hanson also scoring for the home side. Right-half David McMullan played his 35th and last reds game. 1999 - We also played United, with Jamie Redknapp and ex-United star Paul Ince netting as we came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Anfield, with Denis Irwin sent off for the Mancs, after converting a penalty. Dwight Yorke had opened the scoring with one of his eight goals against the reds. The Walton Breck Road reverberated to cries of “you lost the League on Merseyside” after the match, which sadly did not prove true. Defeat at the Cottage 2007 - Papa Bouba Diop was sent off for Fulham as Craig Bellamy played the last game of his first spell at Anfield, with Mark González and Gabriel Paletta also making their final appearances for the reds in our 1-0 defeat that came just four days after we had seen off Chelsea to reach Athens. Harry Kewell played his first game since the previous season’s FA Cup Final, while young left-back Emiliano Insúa played just his second game. Clint Dempsey struck the only goal of the game. More happy birthdays 2003 – Midfielder Dominic Corness was born in Liverpool. He turned professional in February 2021 and is now playing regularly for the Under-18’s. 1936 - Keeper Bert Slater was born in Musselburgh, Midlothian. He arrived from Falkirk in a swap deal for Tommy Younger in June 1959 and played 111 times, winning a Second Division title medal in 1962, before returning to Scotland to join Dundee that July under the management of his brother Bob. 1881 – Left-half Jim Bradley was born in Goldenhill, Staffordshire. He signed from Stoke in September 1905, helping us to claim the League title in his first season and scoring eight times in 186 reds appearances before joining Reading in June 1911. 1876 - Inside-right George Livingstone was born in Dumbarton. He signed from Celtic in May 1902 and bagged four goals in 32 games the following season. He moved on to Manchester City after just one year at Anfield, helping them to claim the FA Cup in 1904. Farewell Jimmy 1965 - Club Secretary Jimmy McInnes sadly hanged himself above the Archway Stile, the old turnstile between the Kop and Kemlyn Road stands, just four days after we had claimed the FA Cup for the first time. He had been in this role for a decade, having previously been on our books as a left-half during the Second World War. Title joy 1951 – Tottenham Hotspur were presented with the championship trophy by Football League President Arthur Drewry, having secured the title in the previous game after being promoted as Second Division champions only the previous season. We lost 3-1 at White Hart Lane that day, with Albert Stubbins on target late on. Sonny Walters struck the first of his four goals against the reds, with Peter Murphy and Len Duquemin also scoring. The greatest at St. Andrews 1984 - Muhammad Ali was in the crowd to watch us play out a goalless draw at Birmingham City. Mixed fortunes against the Latics 1993 - We lost a Premiership fixture 3-2 at Oldham Athletic, with Ian Rush on the scoresheet twice at Boundary Park. David James scored an own goal while Don Hutchinson was sent off, our sixth dismissal that season. Darren Beckford and Ian Olney also struck for the home side. This game had originally been postponed back on Boxing Day. 1945 - We beat Oldham 3-2 in a Wartime League match at Anfield. Phil Taylor, Berry Nieuwenhuys and Les Shannon grabbed our goals. Beginnings and ends 1931 – Right-half Ted Savage signed from Lincoln City for £2,750. He struck twice in 105 reds games, with both his goals coming on his debut! He moved on to Manchester United in December 1937. 1958 - Inside-forward Willie Carlin signed as a professional. He played just one senior game before joining Halifax Town in August 1962, going on to play more than 400 League games for a series of clubs. 1932 – Outside-right Dick Edmed left the reds to join Bolton Wanderers. He signed from his hometown club Gillingham for £1,800 in January 1926 and netted 46 times in 170 reds. 2013 – Forward Alan Arnell died. He had struck 35 times in 75 reds games after arriving from non-league Worthing in March 1953. He stayed with the club until February 1961 when he was sold to Tranmere Rovers. Award winners 2009 - Steven Gerrard was named the PFA Fans’ Player of the Year, after netting 24 times in 44 outings that season. 2019 – On-loan winger Ryan Kent was named as the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year after scoring six goals in 43 games in a successful season with Rangers. 2022 - Mohamed Salah was presented with the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award for the second time in a campaign in which he struck 31 times in 51 outings as he helped us to claim the FA Cup and League Cup, as well as reach another UEFA Champions League Final. Final victory 1959 – We beat Everton in the Lancashire Senior Cup Final at Anfield, with Billy Liddell nabbing the only goal of the game. Derby disappointment 2013 – We were held to a goalless draw by Everton at Anfield, with Sylvain Distin having a header ruled out for a Victor Anichebe foul on Pepe Reina. At the double 2006 - Krisztián Németh bagged a brace for Hungary Under-17’s as they beat Luxembourg 4-0 in the European Championships Finals in Mondorf Les Bains with fellow future red Péter Gulácsi also playing. Other game on this day 1979 – Phil Neal struck twice as we beat Southampton 2-0 at Anfield. Miles away 2003 - Ex-reds reserves forward John Miles signed for Macclesfield Town on a free transfer from Crewe Alexandra, following a loan spell. Roy in charge 1999 - Roy Hodgson was reappointed Manager of Internazionale, in a caretaker role, before returning to Switzerland to coach Grasshopper Club Zürich. Also in international action 1945 – Future reds keeper Cyril Sidlow played as Wales lost a Wartime International 3-2 to England at Ninian Park. 1954 – Andy Beattie took charge of Scotland for their 1-0 friendly defeat of Norway at Hampden Park. He had guested with the reds during the war, and later joined the backroom staff at Anfield after a successful management career. 1987 – Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye played for Norway Under-19’s as they beat Scotland 2-0 in Newport. 1993 – Future Assistant Manager Christian Damiano took charge of France Under-16’s as they lost 2-1 to Poland after extra time in their European Championships Semi-final in Istanbul 2002 – Carl Medjani featured for France Under-17’s as they beat Germany on penalties after their European Championships Quarter-final ended 1-1 in Denmark. On the same day, fellow future red was also on the winning side as Switzerland beat Georgia 3-0 in the same competition. -
Michael’s golden ball 2002 - We beat Derby County 2-0 at Anfield, with double goalscorer Michael Owen being presented with the Ballon d’Or trophy for European Football of the Year before the match. A minute’s silence was also observed before kick-off, in memory of the bereaved and survivors of the Hillsborough disaster. Steven Gerrard and Danny Murphy both made their hundredth League appearances for the reds in this game. On the same day, young reserves forward John Miles left for Stoke City on a free transfer. He only made one senior appearance for the Potters before moving on to Crewe Alexandra after being released at the end of that season. On the way to Rome 1977 - We reached our first European Cup Final after beating Zürich 3-0 at Anfield in the second leg of our Semi-final, with Jimmy Case netting a brace and Kevin Keegan grabbing the other, to go through 6-1 on aggregate as forward Alan Waddle made his 22nd and final reds appearance, as a substitute. Keegan said afterwards, “The only reason I have stayed here is to get to the European Cup Final, and now I’ve done that.” Trouncing the Toffees 2016 – Daniel Sturridge reached a half century of reds goals as we thumped Everton 4-0 at Anfield. Divock Origi and Mamadou Sakho, in his final reds game, both headed in shortly before the break before Ramiro Funes Mori was dismissed and then Sturridge struck. The scoring was rounded out by Philippe Coutinho. 1974 - We were held to a goalless draw in the Anfield derby. We go again 2014 – We secured a joint club record eleventh consecutive League win when we won 3-2 at Norwich City, also a joint club record sixth straight away League victory. This was also a joint club record 25th consecutive top-flight League game in which we had netted. Raheem Sterling and Luis Suárez struck early on as the Uruguayan became the first red to score thirty League goals in a season since Ian Rush in 1987, with Gary Hooper pulling a goal back after the break. Sterling netted again with Robert Snodgrass heading in as we hung on for victory. This left the reds needing just seven points from the last three games to claim the title. Happy birthdays 1902 - Left-back Ernie Blenkinsop was born in Cudworth, Yorkshire. He played 71 reds games without scoring, having won 26 England caps by the time he arrived from Sheffield Wednesday for £6,500 in March 1934. He moved on to Cardiff City in November 1937. 1996 – Brazilian loanee midfielder Arthur Melo was born in Goiânia. He joined on loan from Juventus for €4.5m in September 2022, but only made one senior reds appearance as a late substitute at SSC Napoli later that month, due to injury. Red centurions 2005 - Milan Baroš played his hundredth reds game as we won 2-1 at Portsmouth in a League match, with Fernando Morientes scoring before Diomansy Kamara equalised, with Luis García bagging the winner. 1896 – Forward Malcolm McVean reached a century of reds appearances as we were held to a goalless draw at Small Heath’s Coventry Road ground in a Test Match as we attempted to make it back into the top flight, eventually unsuccessfully. A new boss 1991 - Graeme Souness got off to a good start as Manager as we beat Norwich City 3-0 at Anfield in his first match in charge. The goals came from John Barnes, Ray Houghton and Ian Rush. 1988 - We also faced the Canaries, holding them to a goalless draw at Carrow Road as they became the first team against whom we had twice drawn a blank in the League that season, so holding off our League title celebrations for another three days. Reds debutants 1910 - Left-back Donald McKinlay made the first of his 434 reds appearances in a top-flight fixture with Nottingham Forest at Anfield, with Jack Parkinson scoring four goals in our stunning 7-3 win. Sam Bowyer added a brace, with Jimmy Stewart also on target. John Derrick struck twice for the visitors, with Tom Marrison also on target. 1957 - We also entertained Forest, winning our Second Division meeting 3-1, thanks to goals from Alan A’Court, Billy Liddell and Tony Rowley. James Barratt bagged the last of his four goals past us. 1968 - Doug Livermore, who became the club’s Assistant Manager under Roy Evans, made his reds bow in a 1-0 League defeat at West Ham United, with Martin Peters netting one of his fourteen strikes against the reds. Livermore only played eighteen games for us during his five-year spell as a player at Anfield. Racing to a hat-trick 1929 - Harry Race netted three goals in our 5-2 home League win over Sunderland. Gordon Hodgson bagged our other two goals, with Dave Halliday netting two of his thirteen goals against the reds. Adam Allan was dismissed for the visitors. 1931 – Gordon Hodgson grabbed a treble as we thumped Norwich City 6-0 in a Monday night Hospital Charity Cup encounter at their old ground, The Nest. Gordon Gunson bagged a brace with Dave Wright also on target. George returns 1898 - Centre-forward George Allan re-signed for the club from Celtic for £50. He had originally joined from Leith Athletic for £100 in June 1895 and was the first red to be capped by Scotland, top scoring as we claimed the Second Division title in 1896, and again the following season. He returned north of the border in May 1897 for just a season, bagging a total of 56 goals in 96 reds games before sadly dying of tuberculosis in October 1899 aged just 24. Beginning and end 1985 – Gary Gillespie grabbed the first of his sixteen reds goals as we beat Newcastle United 3-1 at Anfield, with John Wark and Paul Walsh also on the scoresheet. 1963 – Full-back Allan Jones played his fifth and last reds game as we drew 0-0 at Fulham, with inside-forward Jimmy Melia making his 105th consecutive appearance for the reds. Bruce gets the elbow 1987 - Bruce Grobbelaar broke his elbow as we lost 1-0 at Manchester United, with Peter Davenport bagging the late winner. 1953 - We also visited Old Trafford for a First Division match, with Sammy Smyth on target as we lost 3-1. He arrived from Roma for £10.4m in July 2012 to become new boss Brendan Rodgers’ first capture. Beating the Mancs 1930 - Harry Race grabbed his eighteenth and last goal as we beat Manchester United 1-0 in a First Division encounter at Anfield, with centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw and half-back Tommy Gardner both making their reds bows. 1919 - Robert Matthews netted as we were held to a draw in a Wartime League match in L4. Harold’s treble 1933 – Centre-forward Harold Barton scored a hat-trick as we beat SK Rapid Wien 5-2 in a friendly at Anfield. Syd Roberts and Alf Hanson also netted. Ryan departs 2011 - Ryan Babel was sold to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim for £6m. He signed from Ajax for £11.5m in July 2007, proving a very useful asset in his first season, especially from the bench, as he equalled Djibril Cissé’s club record of seven strikes in a season as a substitute. However, subsequent campaigns were far less productive, and he struck a total of 22 times in 146 appearances. A European first 1972 - We played our first game in the new UEFA Cup, beating West Germans Eintracht Frankfurt, who were playing their first competitive fixture of the season. Ex-reds keepers in opposition 2003 - Two ex-reds custodians, David James and Tony Warner, played against each other as West Ham United drew 1-1 with Millwall in a First Division fixture at Upton Park. 2012 - David James signed for Bournemouth. He stayed until the following March, playing nineteen times for the Cherries. 2015 – Keeper Lawrence Vigouroux had his loan spell terminated by Swindon Town for paying a £50 fine in pennies, although he was reinstated after he apologised. Other reds games 1991 – Ray Houghton netted as Sheffield Wednesday held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. 1988 – Gary Gillespie bagged the only goal of Walsall’s visit in the first leg of our League Cup Second Round tie. Neil McDonald converted from the spot for the home side. 1961 - Right-half Gordon Milne scored his first reds goal to help us to a 2-1 Second Division win there, with our other score coming from a George Heslop own goal. Kevin Lewis had a penalty saved by United keeper Dave Hollins, while centre-half Dick White played his 200th game for the club. Dirk off the mark 2006 - Dirk Kuyt grabbed his first reds goal, and 150th career strike to date, which was also our fiftieth Premier League strike against Newcastle United. We won 2-0 at Anfield, with Luis García playing his hundredth reds game. Xabi Alonso spectacularly scored from inside his own half, the second time he had managed that feat for the reds that year. Quick-fire Billy 1958 - Billy Liddell scored after sixteen seconds, with Ronnie Moran putting through his own net to level the score at Bristol City in our Second Division meeting. He added another in the second half, with wing-half Bobby Campbell grabbing the first of his two reds goals as we won 3-1. This was Liddell’s third brace in six games. Barney Rubble departs 1985 - Left-back Alan Kennedy was sold to Sunderland for £100,000. He is best remembered for his winning strikes in two European Cup Finals, but also won five League titles, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields after moving from Newcastle United for £330,000 in August 1978, netting twenty times in 359 appearances. He signed from Alexandra Victoria in 1916 and played 366 reds games, netting three times, winning one League title and captaining England in his time at Anfield. He moved on to Clapton Orient in July 1933. 2003 – Midfielder James Balagizi was born in Manchester. He signed pro terms in September 2020, having joined as an Under-11 from Manchester City. A wise move 2012 – Defender Andre Wisdom netted his only goal for the club on his reds bow as we won our UEFA Europa League group game 5-3 at BSC Young Boys, with winger Oussama Assaidi and midfielder Suso also debuting. Juhani Ojala scored an own goal after just three minutes, with Wisdom nodding us back in front after an equaliser from Raphael Nuzzolo. Ojala and then Gonzalo Zárate struck after the break to turn the game around, before Sebastián Coates headed us level, with substitute Jonjo Shelvey bagging a brace to secure victory. Happy birthday Jerome 1996 – Forward Jerome Sinclair was born in Birmingham. He arrived from West Bromwich Albion’s Academy aged fourteen in the summer of 2011, becoming our youngest ever player in September 2012, aged sixteen years and six days, when he featured in a League Cup Third Round tie at his old club. He eventually struck once in five senior appearances before he moved to Watford for £4m in June 2016. Out-foxed again 2003 - Michael Owen netted from the spot before Emile Heskey struck the winner against his old club Leicester City at Anfield for the third consecutive season as we won 2-1, with Marcus Bent bagging a very late consolation for the visitors. Disappointment at The Dell 1986 - Kevin MacDonald broke his leg shortly after coming on as a substitute as we lost 2-1 at Southampton, with Steve McMahon equalising after David Armstrong opened the scoring with the last of his four goals against the reds. However, Glenn Cockerill struck the winner for the Saints. 1980 - Graeme Souness and David Fairclough netted as we drew 2-2, with Phil Neal missing a penalty. Avi Cohen was heavily criticised in the Israeli press for playing on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. 1997 - We also drew on the south coast, with Karl-Heinz Riedle nabbing our goal before Kevin Davies equalised with the first of his four strikes past us as centre-half Mark Wright played his 210th and final game for the reds. A milestone day at Old Trafford 2004 - We lost 2-1 at Manchester United, as we benefited from a John O’Shea own goal, sandwiched between a Mikael Silvestre brace for the home side. Steven Gerrard broke a bone in his foot in front of 67,857, the largest crowd to watch the reds in the Premier League to that point. This was our 2,000th away League match, and 4,000th League game overall, as United reached 200 League goals against us, with keeper Jerzy Dudek playing his hundredth reds game, and Ryan Giggs appearing for the 600th time for United. 1893 - We had previously visited United, playing Newton Heath as they were then known in a friendly at Bank Street. Patrick Gordon, Hugh McQueen and Malcolm McVean all struck as we won 3-0. Centenary defeat 1988 - We lost 2-1 at Arsenal in the Mercantile Credit Centenary Trophy, staged to celebrate a hundred years of the Football League. Perry Groves opened the scoring in the first half with Steve Staunton bagging a late equaliser with his first reds goal, but Brian Marwood struck the winner. Charlie Boyd sat on our bench for one of only two times, on his nineteenth birthday. Derby joy 1913 - Billy Lacey struck a brace as we beat Everton 2-1 at Goodison Park in a First Division meeting, to secure our first win of the season in our fourth fixture. Full-back Sam Speakman made the first of his 26 reds appearances in this game. 2016 – Centre-half Ragnar Klavan opened the scoring with his first reds goal as we won 3-0 at Derby County in a League Cup Third Round match, as midfielder Ovie Ejaria and keeper Loris Karius made their debuts. Philippe Coutinho and Divock Origi both scored after the break. Bill begins 1924 – Defender Bill Cockburn played the first of his 67 reds games as we held Bury to a goalless draw at Gigg Lane in a top-flight meeting. Mixed fortunes against the Villains We have faced Aston Villa three times in the top flight on this day in history, winning twice. 1975 - John Toshack bagged his fiftieth League goal for the club with Kevin Keegan and Jimmy Case also netting in the final half hour as we won 3-0 at home. 1919 - Dick Forshaw bagged the only goal of the game at Villa Park to hand us victory, which was the first of his 124 reds strikes. 1930 - Gordon Hodgson struck a brace as we lost 4-2 in the Midlands. Eric Houghton scored the first of his six goals against the reds, with George Brown netting one of his nine, Billy Walker one of his five past us, and Tom Waring nabbing the first of his six. Three times against the Potters 2008 - We were held to a goalless draw by Stoke City at Anfield, with Steven Gerrard having a legitimate second-minute free-kick strike ruled out. 1969 - We saw off the Potters 3-1 at home, with Emlyn Hughes on target in his hundredth League game for the reds. Roger Hunt and Ian Callaghan also struck in our tenth consecutive League defeat of Stoke in what was Bill Shankly’s 500th game in charge of the reds. 1902 - Leigh Roose struck through the wrong net in the second minute as were held to a 1-1 top-flight draw by Stoke in L4. Beattie beaten 1983 - Andy Beattie died, aged seventy. He guested for the reds at full-back during the Second World War, and later spent some time on our backroom staff. He managed a host of clubs as well as the Scotland national side, working with Bill Shankly at Huddersfield Town, having played alongside him at Preston North End. Young Englanders 1983 - Future red Paul Walsh grabbed a brace as England Under-21’s beat their Danish counterparts 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier at Carrow Road. Ex-red Dave Watson and future red Mark Walters both made their debuts in this game, while fellow future red Mark Wright also played. 2003 - Michael Foley-Sheridan and David Raven both played for their countries at Under-19’s level in European Championships qualifiers, with the latter making his debut for England at this level. The Republic of Ireland trounced San Marino 10-1 in Serravalle, while England beat Liechtenstein 2-0 in Moscow. 2010 – Samed Yeşil scored his first goal for Germany Under-17’s as they drew a friendly 2-2 with Italy in Elversberg with fellow future red Emre Can also featuring. 1950 – Centre-half Laurie Hughes played for an England World Cup XI against the FA Canadian Touring Team in the FA Charity Shield at Stamford Bridge, with England winning 4-2. Reds aiming to go to Italy 1978 - Phil Neal scored his third goal in four England games as they won 4-3 in a European Championships qualifier in Denmark. Emlyn Hughes skippered a side that also included Ray Clemence and ex-red Kevin Keegan, who netted twice. On the same day, Steve Heighway and future red Mark Lawrenson both played in the first ever senior international between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, at Lansdowne Road. Meanwhile, Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness both appeared for Scotland in their 3-2 win in Austria, as they too opened their campaign to qualify for the finals in Italy. Nice one Cyril 1941 - Cyril Done scored a hat-trick as we beat Manchester City 4-2 in a Wartime League game at Anfield, with Dickie Dorsett netting the other. Twice against the Trotters 1897 – Forward Dan Cunliffe bagged a brace with John McCartney also on target as we beat Bolton Wanderers 3-1 in a friendly at Anfield. 1947 - The Trotters returned for a First Division fixture, with the game this time ending goalless. Jameo saves 1995 - David James saved a penalty from Michael Gray as we beat Sunderland 2-0 in a League Cup Second Round first leg match at Anfield, thanks to goals from Steve McManaman and substitute Michael Thomas. Fabs at the Olympics 2000 – Future red Fábio Aurélio played for Brazil as they beat Japan 1-0 in an Olympics match in Brisbane. Only cap 1989 – Future reds goalkeeping coach José Ochotorena won his only cap in Spain’s 1-0 friendly defeat of Poland in A Coruña. On the move 2013 – Argentine ex-reserves midfielder Gerardo Bruna signed for Spanish Segunda División B side S.D. Huesca, netting once in seventeen outings during his one season there. 2016 – Former Assistant Manager Pako Ayestarán was sacked as Head Coach of Valencia, having only been in charge for three months. 2021 – Centre-half Terence Miles, the nephew of former Academy forward John Miles, turned pro with the reds, having arrived at Under-7’s level. On the same day, Harry Kewell was sacked as Manager of National League side Barnet, having lost five and drawn two of his seven games in charge. Other reds game 1952 – We beat Middlesbrough 4-1 at Anfield, with Jimmy Payne, Jack Smith, Bryan Williams and Kevin Baron all on target. Also in international action 2018 - Future red Mateusz Musiałowski played for Poland Under-16’s in their 3-1 defeat of the Czech Republic. 2006 – Future red Astrit Ajdarević appeared for Sweden Under-17’s as they drew 1-1 with Liechtenstein in a European Championships qualifier in Greece. 2001 - Future reds Javier Mascherano and Fernando Torres faced each other in the Under-17’s World Championship Finals in Trinidad, with Argentina beating Spain 4-2. 1977 – Joey Jones and John Toshack both featured as Wales drew a friendly 0-0 in Kuwait. -
New double act 1998 - The first official reds game under the joint command of Roy Evans and Gérard Houllier took place. We won 2-1 at Southampton, thanks to goals from Karlheinz Riedle and Michael Owen. Their first signing as joint bosses, Norwegian right-back Vegard Heggem, made his debut in this game. Egil Ostenstad had opened the scoring for the home side. Losing League starts 1975 - Joey Jones made his reds debut as we went down 2-0 in our season opener at Queens Park Rangers, who ended the season in second place, just one point behind the mighty reds. Gerry Francis scored a goal at the end of a slick passing move that was later named as the BBC’s Goal of the Season, with substitute Mick Leach adding the second. 1992 - David James made his debut in our 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest, our first game in the newly-formed Premiership. This was also the first Premiership game to be screened live on Sky with Teddy Sheringham netting one of his seven goals against us. Birth and death 1964 - Barry Venison was born in Consett. He signed from Sunderland for £200,000 in July 1986 and made 158 appearances for the reds, scoring three times and helping us to claim two League titles, the FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields in his time at Anfield. He moved on to Newcastle United for £250,000 in July 1992. 1999 – Scottish left-winger Tommy McLeod died. He joined the reds from the Army in October 1945, but only made seven senior appearances before joining Chesterfield in June 1951. Mersey Charity 1986 - Three months after beating the Toffees at Wembley to complete our first ever League and Cup double, the two sides met again there for the FA Charity Shield. Ian Rush equalised in our 1-1 draw after Adrian Heath had scored with just ten minutes remaining, with the trophy being shared by the two clubs. Bruce Grobbelaar was replaced by substitute Mike Hooper just before the hour mark, who was making his debut, so ending Bruce’s run of 310 consecutive reds games. New signing Barry Venison also made his first-class reds bow in this match, on his 22nd birthday, while Craig Johnston played his 200th game for the club. Ins and out 2014 – Left-back Alberto Moreno signed from his hometown club Sevilla for £12m. He struck three times in 141 outings before being released in June 2019. 1961 – Centre-half John Nicholson was sold to Port Vale, having only made one senior reds appearance since turning pro in January 1957. He played over 200 games for the Valiants. 1893 – Forward Albert Worgan signed for the reds. He struck twice in two senior outings before moving on in 1895. Most recently 2009 – Centre-half Daniel Ayala and right-back Glen Johnson both debuted as we lost 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur in our season opener. Ayala came off the bench when Martin Škrtel had to go off following a clash of heads with Jamie Carragher. Steven Gerrard bagged our goal from the spot. 2008 – Fernando Torres struck the only goal of the game late on as we won at Sunderland in our opening League game of the season. Back up north 1939 – Left-half John Browning moved on to Southern League side Gillingham. He had signed from Dunoon Athletic in March 1934, making just nineteen appearances. 1962 – Right-back John Molyneux was sold back to Chester, having signed from there for £5,500 in June 1955. He bagged three goals in 249 games, but did not survive Bill Shankly’s early clear-out. Ephraim on the mark 1924 - Legendary full-back Ephraim Longworth scored one of his four only recorded goals in a public practice game for Stripes vs. Reds. He signed in June 1910 from Leyton Orient, playing 370 times between then and 1928, and becoming the first red to captain England. He then served as Reserve team trainer, before joining the ground staff. Kennedy double 1980 - Both Alan and Ray Kennedy scored in our 3-0 defeat of Crystal Palace at Anfield after Kenny Dalglish had opened the scoring. 1969 - We also won in the top-flight, with Emlyn Hughes and Chris Lawler on target in our 2-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur. Beating the Imps 2006 - A Liverpool XI won 2-1 at Lincoln City, a game arranged as part of the Jack Hobbs transfer a year earlier. Mark González and Besian Idrizaj scored for the reds. Personal honours 2001 - Reds trio Sami Hyypiä, Gary McAllister and Michael Owen were all honoured by legendary French sports paper L’Équipe for the role they played in the club’s unprecedented treble success, being named in their star-studded team of the season. World star Rigo 2000 - Rigobert Song was in action for a FIFA World Stars XI as they were handed a 5-1 beating by France in Marseille. Future red Nicolas Anelka scored while winning his first cap as a Paris Saint-Germain player, with David Trezeguet bagging a hat-trick. Final caps 2000 - Finland beat Norway 3-1 with future red Jari Litmanen bagging a brace. Stig Inge Bjørnebye was sent off as he won his 74th cap, his first as a Blackburn Rovers player following his departure from Anfield two months earlier, while John Arne Riise was winning his final cap as an AS Monaco player. The game was staged to officially open the new FinnAir Stadium in Helsinki, with Sami Hyypiä also in action. On the same day, Brad Friedel won his final cap as a reds player, his 66th in all, as the USA thumped Barbados 7-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Boston. Meanwhile, Dietmar Hamann, ex-red Jim Magilton and future reds Yossi Benayoun, Igor Bišcan, Jerzy Dudek and Alex Manninger were also in friendly action. 1995 - Friedel won his last cap whilst with Danish side Brøndby IF, his 35th to that point, as they lost 1-0 to Sweden in a friendly in Norrköping. 2005 – Future red Stewart Downing won his eighth and last England Under-21’s cap as they won 1-0 in Denmark, with Scott Carson and future red James Milner also featuring. 2006 - Dirk Kuyt won his final cap while with Feyenoord as the Netherlands beat Steve Staunton’s Republic of Ireland 4-0 at Lansdowne Road, with Steve Finnan on the losing side. Olympian reds 2008 – Ryan Babel captained the Netherlands as they lost 2-1 to Javier Mascherano’s Argentina after extra time in the Quarter-final of the Olympics Finals in Shanghai. Meanwhile, Lucas Leiva featured in Brazil’s 2-0 defeat of Cameroon at the same stage in Shenyang. First caps 1995 - Stéphane Henchoz won his first cap as a Hamburger SV player, and eleventh in all, as Roy Hodgson’s Switzerland won 2-0 in a Euro ’96 qualifier in Iceland. István Kozma played for Hungary for the first time while with APOEL in their 2-0 home friendly defeat by Israel. Meanwhile, future reds Patrik Berger, Øyvind Leonhardsen and Gary McAllister all also featured in qualifiers. 1992 – Hodgson also took charge of the Swiss as they thumped Estonia 6-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Tallinn. 2000 - Henchoz also represented his country, making his 43rd appearance in a 2-2 friendly draw with Greece in Saint-Gallen. Crouchie on target again 2006 - Peter Crouch bagged a brace as England beat Greece 4-0 in a friendly at Old Trafford, with Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard and future red Stewart Downing also featuring, and Chris Kirkland making a belated first senior international appearance, while Sotirios Kyrgiakos won his first cap as an Eintracht Frankfurt player, and twentieth to date. On the same day, Sami Hyypiä won his fiftieth cap as a reds player, and 76th in all, captaining Roy Hodgson’s Finland to a 2-1 home defeat to Northern Ireland. Also in international action that day were Daniel Agger, Jerzy Dudek, John Arne Riise, ex-red Rigobert Song and future reds Charlie Adam, Philipp Degen, Ragnar Klavan, Nikolay Mihaylov and Kolo Touré. Ayre apparent 2007 - Commercial Director Ian Ayre started work in his new job for the club. He had previously been Chief Executive of Total Sports Asia, a brand solutions company advising international companies on rolling out Asian sports and entertainment campaigns, having once been Chief Executive and Chairman of Huddersfield Town. He said on being appointed that, “being Liverpool born and bred, this is a dream job for me”. He was promoted to Managing Director in May 2014, leaving the club in February 2017 to take charge of TSV 1860 München. Youngsters on target 2005 - Anthony Le Tallec struck as France Under-21’s drew 2-2 with Italy in a friendly in Libourne, with fellow red Carl Medjani also featuring. On the same day, Besian Idrizaj won his last Under-19’s cap for Austria as a Linzer ASK player, scoring in their friendly defeat of Northern Ireland in Gussing. On the move 1995 - Paul Jewell joined First Division Grimsby Town on loan from Bradford City. He netted once in six appearances for the Mariners. 2002 - John Miles signed for Crewe Alexandra on a free transfer from Stoke City. He netted just once in eight games in his one season at Gresty Road. 2011 – Centre-half Daniel Ayala was sold to Norwich City for £850,000 after five senior reds games. He only played ten times for the Canaries before joining Middlesbrough in January 2014 after a successful loan spell. 2014 – Former loanee winger Victor Moses joined Stoke City for the season from Chelsea, going on to bag four goals in 23 games for the Potters. 2017 – Young winger Sheyi Ojo joined Fulham on loan, netting four times in 24 games for the Cottagers. 2021 – Centre-half Ben Davies joined Sheffield United on loan, netting once in 23 outings for the Blades. On the same day, midfielder Leighton Clarkson moved to Blackburn Rovers for the season, with whom he only played twice before returning to Anfield in January 2022.
