African magic 2000 - A truly momentous day for Rigobert Song, who captained Cameroon to the African Cup of Nations, scoring the decisive penalty in the shoot-out in the Final against host nation Nigeria in Lagos after the game had ended 2-2 after extra-time. This was happening at the same time as we won at Highbury in the League for the final time, hanging on after Titi Camara’s strike to beat Arsenal 1-0. 2004 - Future red Momo Sissoko played for Mali as they lost their Third-place Play-off 2-1 to Nigeria in the same competition in Tunisia. New boss 1923 - Matt McQueen was appointed Manager after David Ashworth’s departure for Oldham Athletic two months earlier. He helped the reds to retain the League title at the end of that season, taking charge of the team on 229 occasions in all. He had played for the club in its first eight years of existence, making 103 appearances in every position on the park and scoring seven times, then joining the club’s board towards the end of the First World War. Red milestones 2023 – Fabinho played his 200th reds game as we beat Everton 2-0 at Anfield with Cody Gakpo bagging his first goal for the club as Jürgen Klopp secured his 250th victory as boss. Mohamed Salah scored before the break, with Gakpo netting early in the second half. Happy birthday Mamadou 1990 – Centre-half Mamadou Sakho was born in Paris. He signed from Paris Saint-Germain for £15m in September 2013, netting three times in eighty games before falling out with boss Jürgen Klopp and being sent off to Crystal Palace on loan in February 2017, making the move permanent for an initial £24m six months later. 1870 – Half-back Tom Cleghorn was born in Edinburgh. He signed from Blackburn Rovers in March 1896, scoring once in seventy games before moving to Portsmouth in August 1899. He helped Pompey to claim both the Southern Football League First Division and Western Football League First Division titles in 1901/02. Carra dismissed 1999 - We lost 1-0 to Charlton Athletic, our first match at The Valley since 1961. Jamie Carragher was sent off for a supposed elbow, while John Barnes made his debut for the Addicks, as a substitute. Keith Jones was on target to net the first Charlton goal in this fixture since 1960. 1954 - We also lost to Charlton, being beaten 3-2 at Anfield. Ex-Addick Johnny Evans and inside-forward Eric Anderson struck for the reds, while keeper Russell Crossley played his 73rd and final reds game. Eddie Firmani bagged a brace, with Syd O’Linn also on target. Fred’s treble 1915 - Fred Pagnam grabbed a hat-trick as we shared six goals with Chelsea in a League game at Anfield. Donald McKinlay put through his own net, with Harold Halse scoring the last of his four goals against the reds and Bobby Thomson also netting for the Blues as Elisha Scott saved a late penalty from Robert Abrams. 1982 - We also faced the Blues, losing an FA Cup Fifth Round tie 2-0 to the then-Second Division outfit at Stamford Bridge. Peter Rhoades-Brown and Colin Lee struck the goals. Super sub’s ton up 1979 – David Fairclough reached a century of reds games in our League meeting with Birmingham City, originally postponed from a month earlier. Graeme Souness struck the only goal at Anfield. Also recently 2022 – Fabinho bagged the only goal of our trip to bottom-of-the-table Burnley from a corner. Luther at last 1988 - Luther Blissett finally breached the reds’ defence in a League game at Watford to score the first goal against us in all competitions for 994 minutes, a then club record. We still won comfortably in a mud bath, 4-1, with Peter Beardsley bagging a brace to take his tally to eight in as many games, to add to goals from John Aldridge and ex-Hornet John Barnes. Mixed FA Cup fortunes We have won three of our four FA Cup ties on this day over the years, with the other tie being our defeat at Chelsea in 1982. 1971 - A Chris Lawler goal saw off Southampton in the Fifth Round at Anfield, as we headed towards Wembley. 1993 - We visited The Dell in a League game, losing 2-1 with Don Hutchison netting for the reds. 1932 - Outside-left Gordon Gunson scored to defeat Grimsby Town at Anfield, in another Fifth Round tie, just a week after we had been thumped 5-1 by them in a top-flight fixture at Blundell Park. We were then knocked out by Chelsea at Anfield in the next round. 1897 - Our first cup tie on this day was played at West Bromwich Albion’s Stoney Lane ground, with Malcolm McVean bagging his 43rd and final goal for the club and centre-half Robert Neill also scoring in our 2-1 win. Willie Donnelly made his eighth and final appearance in our goal, with inside-right Jimmy Ross playing for the 85th and last time. The reds prepared for this game by spending the week in Worcestershire, going straight there from our away match at Stoke City the previous Saturday. We lost out to Aston Villa that season after reaching our first ever Semi-final. Cyril’s treble 1943 - Cyril Done grabbed a hat-trick as we beat Tranmere Rovers 4-1 in a Wartime League game at Anfield. Michael Hulligan bagged our other goal. Firsts and last 2021 – Loanee centre-half Ozan Kabak made his reds bow as we lost 3-1 at Leicester City behind closed doors. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring after the break, but James Maddison and Harvey Barnes struck either side of one of Jamie Vardy’s ten goals against us in what was Jürgen Klopp’s 300th game in charge of the reds. 1904 – Right-half Bobby Robinson played the first of his 271 reds games as we were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Stoke. Forward Joe Hewitt also debuted in this game, the first of his 164 appearances. 1909 - Left-half Jim Bradley struck his eighth and final reds goal in the first minute of our 4-1 thumping of Leicester Fosse at Anfield, with full-back Bob Crawford making his reds bow and outside-left Michael Griffin playing his fourth and final reds game. Arthur Goddard nabbed a brace, with Sam Bowyer also on target. 1890 – Frank Grayer was born in Southampton. He signed from his hometown club for £100 in July 1912 but only played one senior reds game, as right-back in our 2-1 home defeat to Manchester United in April 1914. He was so badly wounded during the First World War that he was unable to play football again. International debuts 2019 – Oakley Cannonier played for England Under-15’s for the only time as they lost a friendly 3-1 to Belgium at St. George’s Park. 2002 – Future red Sotirios Kyrgiakos won his first senior cap as Greece drew 2-2 with Sweden in a friendly in Thessaloniki. 1937 - Future reds right-back Billy Hood won his only international cap, playing for Ireland as they thumped England 5-1 in an amateur international in Belfast. 1909 - Ex-reds winger Arthur Berry won his only cap for England as they beat Ireland 4-0 in the British International Championships at Valley Parade. Reds keeper Sam Hardy also played for the home side, while future red Billy Lacey made his debut for Ireland in the same game. Friendly scoring for their countries 2002 - Dietmar Hamann netted in Germany’s 7-1 defeat of Israel in Kaiserslautern. Substitute Vladimír Šmicer was on target on the same day as the Czech Republic won 4-3 in Cyprus, with Milan Baroš also playing. Real Madrid’s Fernando Morientes struck as Spain drew 1-1 with Portugal in Barcelona. Meanwhile, future red Djibril Cissé bagged a brace as France Under-21’s thumped their Belgian counterparts 5-1 in Boulogne. This was the third consecutive international in which he had found the net. Another future red, Craig Bellamy, scored as Wales held Argentina to a 1-1 draw in a friendly in Cardiff. Also playing for their countries that day were Steven Gerrard, Emile Heskey, David Raven, John Arne Riise and Mark Smyth, as well as ex-reds Brad Friedel, David James, Jim Magilton and Øyvind Leonhardsen, and future reds Yossi Benayoun, Joe Cole, Ádám Hajdú and Paul Jones. Final caps 1926 - Ted Parry won his fifth and final cap for Wales as they lost 3-0 to Northern Ireland in the British International Championships in Belfast. Ex-red Billy Matthews also won his final Welsh cap in this game, and only one while playing for Bradford Park Avenue, while David McMullan and Elisha Scott both played for the home side. 2002 - Ex-red Mark Kennedy won his 34th and final cap for the Republic of Ireland as they beat Russia 2-0 in a friendly at Lansdowne Road, with future red Robbie Keane on target. Steve Staunton, future red Steve Finnan and ex-red Jason McAteer all also played. Other reds games 1965 – We beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Roger Hunt and Chris Lawler. 1963 – We thumped Aston Villa 4-0 in L4 with Roger Hunt and Ian St. John both scoring twice. 1960 – Dave Hickson netted as we drew 1-1 at Plymouth Argyle in a Second Division meeting 1937 – Middlesbrough won 2-0 at Anfield with Mickey Fenton bagging the first two of his nine goals against us. 1929 – We lost 3-2 to Manchester United at home with ex-red Tommy Reid scoring the first two of his four goals against us, with Harry Thomas also netting for the visitors. Gordon Hodgson was on target for the reds as Bob Done converted a penalty, with all five goals coming before the break. 1926 – We defeated Burnley 3-2 in L4, going three goals ahead through Harry Chambers and a Dick Forshaw brace before Louis Page netted the first of his seven goals against the reds. Jack Bruton then struck the first of his four past us. More youngsters in action 2010 – Conor Coady captained England Under-17’s as they drew 1-1 with France in the Algarve Tournament, with Jack Robinson and Andre Wisdom also playing. 2013 – Future red Dominic Solanke featured as England Under-16’s lost 4-3 to Germany in Cologne. 2017 – Reserves keeper Vítezslav Jaroš appeared for the Czech Republic Under-16’s as they lost a friendly 5-3 in Israel. 2018 – Bobby Duncan played for England Under-17’s in their 2-0 defeat of the Netherlands in the Algarve Tournament with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. Razor heads south 1989 - Neil Ruddock signed for Southampton from Millwall for £250,000. He struck thirteen times in 138 games while at The Dell before rejoining Tottenham Hotspur for £750,000 in July 1992. -
Strikers on the move 1961 - Ian St. John signed from Motherwell for a club record £37,500. He went on to bag 118 goals in 425 reds games, helping us to two League titles, our first ever FA Cup, Second Division championship and FA Charity Shield before joining South African side Hellenic in February 1971. 1897 – Scottish inside-forward Willie Walker arrived from Leith Athletic. He struck three times in twelve reds games, returning to his former club for free in August 1898 1938 – Bill Kinghorn joined the reds from Queen’s Park. He netted four times in nineteen reds games, and another three times in eleven wartime matches. 1979 - Future red John Aldridge signed for Newport County from South Liverpool for £3,500. He netted 83 times in 198 games for County. Cally honoured 1974 - Ian Callaghan was named as the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, surprisingly becoming the first red ever to win this honour since its launch in 1948. 2008 - Fernando Torres was voted runner-up in the same awards, with ex-red David James in third. Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo was the winner. Happy birthdays 1981 - Chris Kirkland was born in Leicester. He only appeared 45 times between our sticks after signing from Coventry City for £6m in August 2001, while suffering from a succession of injuries, and moved to Wigan Athletic in October 2006 for a reported £3.5m after a successful loan spell. 1904 - Outside-right Cyril Oxley was born in Worksop. He signed from Chesterfield for £2,000 in October 1925 and bagged six goals in 34 games before moving to Southend United in September 1928. 1997 – Midfielder Matty Virtue was born in Epsom. He was Under-23’s skipper, moving on to Blackpool in January 2019. Red farewells 2018 – Ragnar Klavan featured in his 53rd and last reds game as we lost the second leg of our UEFA Champions League Semi-final 4-2 at Roma, our first defeat in the competition that season, to progress 7-6 on aggregate. Sadio Mané and Gini Wijnaldum both scored inside the first half hour, either side of an unfortunate James Milner own goal. Edin Džeko gave the home side hope with the latest of his five goals past us before Radja Nainggolan added two late strikes, including a stoppage-time penalty. 2010 – Yossi Benayoun played his 134th and final reds game prior to joining the visitors as we meekly surrendered 2-0 to Chelsea at Anfield, thus helping to ensure they won the League title ahead of Manchester United and that we could not qualify for the following season’s Champions League. Didier Drogba pounced on a stray Steven Gerrard back-pass to open the scoring with one of his eleven goals past us, with Frank Lampard also on target with last of his eight. Daniel Ayala also made his final senior appearance, his fifth. 2004 - Danny Murphy scored his 44th and last reds goal, converting a spot-kick in a 2-0 defeat of Middlesbrough at Anfield, to continue his hundred per cent record at penalties for us, with his eighth successful conversion. Emile Heskey grabbed the other goal. 1956 – Don Welsh took charge of the reds for the last time as we lost our final game of the season 2-0 at Lincoln City to finish the season in third in the Second Division. 1925 – Full-back Ted Parry made his thirteenth and final reds appearance as we drew 1-1 at League champions Huddersfield Town, benefiting from a Tommy Wilson own goal as we finished the season in fourth. Five against the Hammers 1998 - We thumped West Ham United 5-0 at home in the Premiership. Michael Owen, Jason McAteer, with a brace that included his final reds goal, and Øyvind Leonhardsen all scored before the break, with ex-Hammer Paul Ince wrapping up the scoring in the second half to ensure our place in the UEFA Cup for the next season. 1931 - We also played the Hammers as Gordon Hodgson struck twice in our final game of the season to hand us a 2-0 win at Anfield, as we finished ninth in the top flight. This was the sixth consecutive game in which he had netted. The worst season ever 1955 - We finished the season with a 6-1 thumping at Rotherham United, ending up in our worst ever final League position, eleventh in the Second Division. The great Billy Liddell bagged our consolation with Ian Wilson netting four goals, with Jack Grainger and Dennis Pell also on target for the Millers. Champions! 1988 - We were presented with the League Championship trophy, along with the new Barclays trophy, before our 1-1 Bank Holiday Monday home draw with Southampton. John Aldridge put us in front just before half-time, with Rod Wallace equalising with the first of his five strikes against the reds. Also recently 2015 - Philippe Coutinho gave us a first-half lead over Queens Park Rangers before Leroy Fer equalised after the break. Nedum Onuoha was sent off for the visitors and Steven Gerrard had a penalty saved by Robert Green, although he went on to head in a late goal as we won 2-1 with Lazar Marković making his 34th and last reds appearance. 2021 – Our League visit to Manchester United, due to be played behind closed doors due to COVID restrictions, was called off before kick-off due to protests by the home fans against their owners. Colin for the only time 1981 - Forward Colin Russell played his only reds game as Sunderland won 1-0 at Anfield, thanks to a Stan Cummins goal. Future Bolton Wanderers boss Sam Allardyce played his final game for the visitors. A Tiny mistake 1936 - We lost 2-1 in our final game of the season as we finished nineteenth with Stoke City securing their joint highest ever League placing, ending up fourth in the top flight. Fred Howe netted for the reds with centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw putting through his own net and Jim Westland also on target for the home side. This was George Patterson’s last game in his second spell in charge of the reds. Injured 1992 – John Barnes had to limp off during our goalless draw at Sheffield Wednesday with an injury that ruled him out of the FA Cup Final the following weekend. Danny stays 2009 – Centre-half Daniel Agger agreed a new contract until 2014, later further extended. He struck fourteen times in 232 reds games since signing from Brøndby IF for £5.8m in January 2006, before returning there for a reported £3m in August 2014. Reds against reds 1984 - Alan Kennedy and Sammy Lee faced Ian Rush in a British International Championships game at the Racecourse Ground. It was Barney’s second and final cap. Future red Mark Wright made his England debut, while his future clubmate Paul Walsh won his fifth and last cap. Ex-red Joey Jones also played as the home side won 1-0 thanks to a Mark Hughes goal. Future red Glenn Hysén and ex-red Dave Watson both also featured in internationals that day. First and last caps 1979 - John Toshack won his first cap as a Swansea City player, and 35th overall, in Wrexham, coming on as a substitute in their 2-0 defeat by West Germany in a European Championships qualifier. Fellow ex-red Joey Jones also played. 1989 – Øyvind Leonhardsen debuted for Norway Under-21’s as they lost 2-1 to Poland, with fellow future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye also in action. 2004 - David Raven won his sixth and last cap for England Under-19's as they drew a European Championships qualifier with Ukraine 1-1 in Slovenia. Ins and out 2011 – Sami Hyypiä announced his retirement from playing, having bagged three goals in 61 outings for Bayer 04 Leverkusen after leaving Anfield two years earlier. On the same day, it was announced that Club Secretary Ian Silvester was to leave by mutual consent, having been in that role for two years. 1980 – Defender Richard Money arrived from Fulham for a £50,000 fee. However, he was unable to displace either Alan Kennedy or Phil Neal at full-back, making only seventeen first-team appearances before joining Luton Town in April 1982. 1908 – Scottish keeper Don Sloan signed from Everton for £300, failing to keep a clean sheet in six reds games before becoming Player/Manager of his old club Distillery in Belfast in July 1909. 1896 – Scottish centre-half Robert Neill signed on loan from Hibernian, having joined on loan in April 1895. At five feet four inches he is probably our shortest ever central defender, scoring three times in 27 games. He left to join Rangers in April 1897. More disappointments on this day 1995 – We shared a goalless draw with Wimbledon at Selhurst Park. 1987 – We lost 1-0 at Coventry City, with Nick Pickering scoring shortly after the break. 1983 – Peter Davenport bagged the only goal of our trip to Nottingham Forest as we fell to our fourth consecutive defeat, with the League title already in the bag. 1963 – Ian St. John scored as we lost 2-1 at Leyton Orient, although the O’s were still relegated after just one season in the top flight. 1921 – We shared a goalless draw with Arsenal at Highbury. Young uncle Roy on target 1964 - Roy Evans netted for England Schoolboys as they beat their Scottish counterparts 4-2 in Dundee. Also in international action 1956 – Future reds keeper Tommy Younger played for Scotland in their 1-1 friendly draw with Austria at Hampden Park. 1962 – Ian St. John featured as Scotland lost 3-2 to Uruguay at the same venue. 1978 – Future reds coach Joe Corrigan played for England Under-21’s as they drew the second leg of their European Championships Semi-final 1-1 with Yugoslavia at Maine Road, losing out 3-2 on aggregate. 2002 – Carl Medjani captained France Under-17’s as they lost 2-1 to fellow future red Arnaud Bühler’s Switzerland in a European Championships Finals group game in Denmark. 2006 – Jerzy Dudek played for Poland as they lost a friendly 1-0 to Lithuania in Bełchatów. 2007 – Future reds Victor Moses and Mamadou Sakho both played in European Championships Finals group games in Belgium. 2019 – Luke Chambers and Isaac Mabaya played for England Under-15’s as they lost a penalty shoot-out after their friendly meeting with the USA ended 1-1. -
An Anfield farewell 1996 - Ian Rush played his final reds game at Anfield, with Stan Collymore scoring the only goal of the game against Middlesbrough. He was applauded onto the pitch by a ‘guard of honour’ from both teams. Heading to Istanbul 2005 - We held Chelsea to a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge in the first leg of our Champions League Semi-final. The evening was only slightly spoiled by Xabi Alonso’s unwarranted booking that would rule him out of the Anfield return. Steven Gerrard had an emergency dental operation on the morning of the game. FA Cup semi-finals We have twice played FA Cup Semi-finals on this day over the years. 1963 - We lost 1-0 to Leicester City at Hillsborough, with Mike Stringfellow heading in the winner, the first of his five goals against the reds, and Gordon Banks keeping the reds at bay. Winger Kevin Lewis made his 82nd and final reds appearance that day. 1977 - We beat Everton 3-0 at Maine Road in a replay, to keep on course for the treble. Our goals came from a Phil Neal penalty, Jimmy Case and Ray Kennedy that day. Both sides also had strong penalty claims turned down. Title blow 2014 – We lost 2-0 to Chelsea at Anfield to deal our title chances a major blow. The visitors were time-wasting from the first minute as we felt the absence of the suspended Jordan Henderson. Steven Gerrard slipped at the end of the first half to allow Demba Ba a clear run on goal, and he slipped the ball past Simon Mignolet. We failed to break down the Blues’ blanket defence, with Willian nabbing a stoppage time second, the first of his four goals past us. Iago Aspas made his fifteenth and final reds appearance, from the bench with future red Mohamed Salah and ex-red Fernando Torres both featuring for the visitors. On the same day, Luis Suárez was named PFA Player of the Year for a season in which he struck 31 times in total in 37 reds outings. He was also included in the Team of the Year, alongside Steven Gerrard, Daniel Sturridge and future red Adam Lallana. This was Gerrard’s eighth and last appearance in this list, a record in the Premier League era. Happy birthdays 1990 - Defender Martin Kelly was born in Whiston. He made his senior bow as a sub in our Champions League win at PSV Eindhoven in December 2008, striking once in 62 reds games before joining Crystal Palace in August 2014 for a reported £2m. 1904 - Right-back Bob Done was born in Runcorn. He struck thirteen times in 155 reds games following his arrival from his hometown side in April 1926. He left for Reading for £150 in May 1935. 1873 – Wing-half Charlie Wilson was born in Sutton, St Helens. He signed from Stockport County on a free transfer in December 1897, bagging three goals in 91 reds games before becoming a Scout at Anfield in 1905, a role he held until the Second World War. 1959 – Academy Director Frank McParland was born in Liverpool. He started out in 1995 by assisting John Owens with the Under-14’s. When the Academy opened in 1999 he was handed a full-time role as head of the community coaching department. Gérard Houllier later gave him a scouting role before Rafael Benítez made him Joint Chief Scout, moving to Bolton Wanderers as General Manager in July 2007, although he only remained there three months. He returned to Melwood in May 2009, moving up to be Director of Academy and Player Development two years later. He left the club again in November 2013. Another title disappears from view 2002 - Michael Owen made his 150th League appearance as we lost 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur, thanks to a Gus Poyet goal. It was our first defeat in fifteen League games and made winning the title a near impossibility. This was also Jari Litmanen’s 43rd and final game in a reds shirt. Meanwhile, a Neil Mellor brace sent the Under-19’s into the Final of the National Play-offs, as we overcame Nottingham Forest 2-1, to set up a two-legged tie with Arsenal. These goals took the boy Mellor to 44 goals for the season. On the same day, future Anfield star Anthony Le Tallec was on target for Le Havre as the French outfit were promoted into the top division by beating Laval 4-1. Thumping the Geordies 2013 - Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson struck twice each, with Daniel Agger and Fabio Borini also on target as we won 6-0 at Newcastle United, with Mathieu Debuchy sent off for the home side late on. In the best team 2008 - Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and ex-red David James were all named in the PFA Team of the Year. 2003 – Ex-reds keeper Brad Friedel was voted into the PFA Team of the Year, having kept fifteen clean sheets in the League for Blackburn Rovers. Up and down 1895 - We lost a Test Match 1-0 to Bury at Ewood Park that relegated us after just one season in the top flight. Robert Neill made his reds bow in this game. He was possibly our shortest ever centre-half, standing at just five foot four inches. Also debuting were keeper John Whitehead and forward John Cleland, who played his only senior reds game while on loan from Edinburgh side St. Bernard’s, while outside-left John Drummond made his eighteenth and final appearance. Bury keeper Archie Montgomery was sent off late on for kicking out at Harry Bradshaw. This was William Barclay’s last game in charge of the side. 1896 – John McKenna managed the reds for the final time as we lost another Test Match, going down 2-0 at West Bromwich Albion’s Stoney Lane ground. However, previous results were enough to ensure our promotion. Milestone games 1908 - We played our 500th League game, beating Bury 2-1 at Anfield in our final game of the season thanks to a Ronald Orr brace, with Billy Hibbert bagging one of his thirteen goals against the reds. We ended the season in eighth position. 1985 – Alan Hansen played his 400th reds game as we drew 0-0 at Ipswich Town. 2022 – Jordan Henderson featured in the UEFA Champions League for the fiftieth time as we beat Villarreal 2-0 in the first leg of our Semi-final at Anfield, on our way to reach the Final for the tenth time. The score was level at the break, with Pervis Estupiñán deflected a Henderson cross into his own goal before Sadio Mané double our lead. Sam’s last 1912 – Forward Sam Gilligan bagged his sixteenth and final reds goal in the second minute of our 1-0 top-flight victory at Oldham Athletic. Disaster in North London 1935 - Willie Evans scored a hat-trick for Tottenham Hotspur as they trounced us 5-1 at White Hart Lane. Berry Nieuwenhuys grabbed our consolation while forward Sam English played his fiftieth and final reds game. George Hunt struck one of his five goals past us, with Len Bolan also on the scoresheet. Left-back John Glover and inside-right George Livingstone both played their last reds games. For Razor 1991 - A testimonial match for Ray Kennedy was staged at Highbury. A reds team beat Arsenal 3-1, with Jan Mølby, David Speedie and Peter Beardsley on the scoresheet. A treble for Jimmy 1931 - Left-half Jimmy McDougall grabbed a hat-trick as we were beaten 8-4 by Yeovil & Petters United at their Huish Park Stadium in a friendly, with Cyril Done nabbing our other goal. First and last times with the armband 1982 - Phil Thompson skippered England for the sixth and final time as they beat Wales 1-0 in the British International Championships in Cardiff. Joe Corrigan, ex-red Joey Jones, Terry McDermott, Phil Neal and Ian Rush all also featured. 1977 - Future red Kenny Dalglish captained Scotland for the first time as they beat Sweden 3-1 in a friendly at Hampden Park. In and out 1936 – Keeper Stanley Kane was sold to Southend United. He had only made six senior appearances after signing on in July 1934, having left Birmingham. 1920 – Forward Peter McKinney signed from Consett Celtic. He struck once in three reds appearances, all in 1920/21, and later emigrated to the USA to join New York Giants. 1999 - Stephen Warnock signed as a professional. He played 67 reds games, notching once, before moving to Blackburn Rovers in January 2007 for £1.5m, although he moved on to Aston Villa in August 2009. Twice against the Blades and Hammers We have twice ended the season by playing Sheffield United in the top flight at Anfield on this day over the years. 1907 - We drew 2-2 with forward Sam Raybould on target in his 226th and final reds game. Alec Lindsay had a penalty saved by Mervyn Day in the first half. Trevor Brooking and Frank Lampard both struck for the home side. International debut once more 1927 - Ex-red Billy Lacey represented his third different country, playing in the Republic of Ireland’s second ever senior international, as they lost 2-1 to Italy ‘B’ in Dublin. This followed eighteen caps he had won for Ireland and another eight for Northern Ireland. Beaten by Rovers We have twice lost to Blackburn Rovers on this day in history. 1929 - Birthday boy Bob Done converted a penalty as we lost a top-flight meeting 2-1 at Ewood Park. 1893 - We lost an Anfield friendly 1-0. Other reds games 1968 – We beat Fulham 4-1 at Anfield with Allan Clarke putting the visitors in front with one of his seven goals against the reds, despite appearing to be offside. Young England reds 2018 – Future red Harvey Elliott struck for England Under-15’s as they beat the Czech Republic 6-4 in a tournament game in Italy. 2016 – Bobby Duncan scored as England Under-15’s drew 1-1 with Russia in Italy. 2002 - Mark Smyth was on target as England Under-17’s beat Finland 3-2 in a European Championships Finals game in Denmark. Clubmate David Raven was skipper and David Mannix also played. 1993 – Future reds Academy coach Mike Sheron bagged a brace as England Under-21’s beat the Netherlands 3-0 in a European Championships qualifier at Fratton Park. Rob Jones also featured. On the same day, future red Bjørn Tore Kvarme played for Norway Under-21’s in their 5-1 thumping of Turkey in a European Championships qualifier. 1988 - Gary Ablett won his only Under-21’s cap as England drew 2-2 with France in the Semi-final of the European Championships at Highbury. Unfortunately, France won 6-4 on aggregate. Future red Michael Thomas also played. Splashing about 1894 - Outside-left Hugh McQueen nearly died when he dived off a springboard at Southport baths where the team were training, as he could not swim! He made 61 reds appearances in total after signing from Leith Athletic in October 1892, bagging eighteen goals and helping us to the Lancashire League and Second Division titles in successive seasons before joining Derby County in July 1895. Potter for the Irish 2004 - Darren Potter made his debut for the Republic of Ireland’s Under-21’s as they drew 2-2 in a friendly in Poland. Ex-red Daniel Sjölund struck as the Finnish Under-21’s beat Bosnia & Herzegovina 3-1 away from home. Robbie Foy played for Scotland at the same level while Jimmy Ryan featured for the Irish Under-16’s on the same day, with future red Daniel Agger in action for Denmark Under-20’s and future red Ragnar Klavan playing for the senior Estonia side. Other internationals 1983 – Glenn Hysén, Mark Lawrenson, Sammy Lee, Phil Neal, Ian Rush and Ronnie Whelan all played for their countries, with ex-red Joey Jones reaching half a century of caps for Wales in their 1-0 European Championships qualifying defeat of Bulgaria in Wrexham. 1991 - Future red Nigel Clough netted the only goal of the game as England B beat Iceland in a friendly at Vicarage Road. Fellow future red Paul Stewart also featured. 1998 – Future red Milan Baroš featured for the Czech Republic Under-17’s as they lost 2-1 to Italy in a tournament in Slovenia. 2001 – Future red Anthony Le Tallec scored twice for France Under-16’s in their 5-0 thumping of Finland in the European Championships Finals in Grimsby. 2015 - Future red Kamil Grabara saved two penalties in a shoot-out as Poland Under-16’s beat Turkey 7-6 after their friendly ended 1-1 in Israel. On the same day, ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-16’s as they beat Saudi Arabia Under-15’s 2-0 at St. George’s Park. 2017 – Future red Dominik Szoboszlai captained Hungary Under-167’s in their goalless friendly draw with Turkey in Telki. 2019 – Isaac Mabaya featured for England Under-15’s in a 2-1 friendly defeat in Italy. -
European semi-finals We have played three European Semi-finals on this day. 1985 - Mark Lawrenson grabbed the only goal of the game in Greece to knock Panathinaikos out 5-0 on aggregate, as we reached our fifth European Cup Final in nine years. 1997 - Our 2-0 defeat of Paris Saint-Germain in the European Cup Winners’ Cup at Anfield was not enough to overcome a three goal first-leg deficit. Robbie Fowler and Mark Wright netted our goals. Robbie Fowler scored his seventh in the competition, a club record with Mark Wright bagging his first goal in his 200th LFC game. 2018 – Mohamed Salah scored in his seventh consecutive reds game, netting twice past future reds keeper Alisson Becker before the break as we beat his former club Roma 5-2 in the first leg of our UEFA Champions League Semi-final. Sadio Mané also scored before Roberto Firmino added a brace to reach fifty goals for the reds. However, the visitors pulled two late goals back through one of Edin Džeko’s five goals past us to date and a Diego Perotti spot-kick. Sadly, the night was spoiled by an injury to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain that kept him out of action for a full year. Divock again 2022 – We beat Everton 2-0 at Anfield with Andy Robertson headed in the opener after an hour. Divock Origi nodded in his eleventh Premier League goal from off the bench, a club record. This was his 41st and final strike for the club, six of which had come against the Blues. Going down 1954 – Bill Jones played his 277th and final reds game in our 3-0 defeat at Blackpool to confirm relegation to the Second Division, with inside-right Sammy Smyth appearing for the 44th and last time. Stan Mortensen bagged a brace, the last of his eleven goals against us, with Allan Brown also scoring. Billy Liddell played his 300th League game for the reds. Mixed fortunes against the Mancs We have twice visited Manchester United for top-flight fixtures on this day in history. 2004 - Danny Murphy scored the only goal for the third time in four League meetings at Old Trafford, this time from the penalty spot after Gary Neville brought down Steven Gerrard. This was Stéphane Henchoz’s 200th reds game, John Arne Riise’s hundredth League game for us, and Bruno Cheyrou’s 48th and final reds appearance, after he came off the bench to replace Harry Kewell. 1965 - Unfortunately, we lost 3-0 as United went on to claim the title. Denis Law bagged the first two of his six goals past us with United also having two strikes ruled out, hitting the post twice and having two shots cleared off the line. John Connelly netted the other goal for the home side. Rafa honoured 2006 - Rafael Benítez was named Coach of the Year for 2005 by la Comunidad de Madrid at the annual Seven Stars of Sport Awards ceremony. This was in recognition of leading us to stunning Champions League success in Istanbul in his first season in charge at Anfield. Banned 2013 - Luis Suárez was banned by the FA for ten matches after being found guilty of biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanović at Anfield two days earlier. Gary Mac the boss 2002 - Gary McAllister was named Coventry City’s new player-manager, although he would remain at Anfield until the end of the season. He remained in the post until he had to step down due to his wife’s illness in January 2004. Happy birthday 1976 - Steve Finnan was born in Limerick. He made 217 appearances after signing from Fulham for £3.5m in July 2003, notching once. He helped us to claim the UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield before joining R.C.D. Espanyol in September 2008. A rare defeat 1974 - We lost 1-0 at home to Arsenal with future red Ray Kennedy on target, one of just eleven League defeats at Anfield during the whole of the 1970’s, with the Gunners inflicting three of these. This game was in fact our hundredth meeting in the League. Red endings 1915 - Billy Banks played his 26th and final reds game as we won 2-0 at Oldham Athletic in a top-flight match, with forward Jimmy Nicholl appearing for the 59th and last time as Fred Pagnam bagged a brace. This was future reds boss David Ashworth’s final game in charge of the home side, with Tom Watson managing the reds for the last time, while the result ensured that Everton were crowned champions, rather than the Latics. 1937 – Centre-forward Fred Howe struck his 36th and final goal for the club as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Huddersfield Town. Bobby Barclay netted one of his five goals against the reds. 1948 – We lost 2-1 at Aston Villa as right-winger Alex Muir played for the fourth and last time. Albert Stubbins gave us the lead before Trevor Ford struck two of his seven goals against the reds. 2020 – Outside-right Don Woan died. He signed from Bootle Athletic for £1,000, but only played two senior games before moving on to Leyton Orient in November 1951. 1969 – Left-back Ernie Blenkinsop died. He played 71 reds games without scoring, having won 26 England caps by the time he arrived from Sheffield Wednesday for £6,500 in March 1934. He moved on to Cardiff City in November 1937. 1999 – Sean Dundee featured for the reds for the fifth and last time as we won 3-1 at Blackburn Rovers, with Steve McManaman, Jamie Redknapp and Øyvind Leonhardsen all on target in the first half before Damien Duff pulled a goal back after an hour. 1894 – We lost 3-1 at home to Rovers in a Palatine League game, with the reds fielding a reserves side containing just nine players! In and out 1895 – Scottish centre-half Robert Neill signed on loan from Hibernian, arriving permanently in May 1896. At five feet four inches he is probably our shortest ever central defender, scoring three times in 27 games. He left to join Rangers in April 1897. 2009 – Reserves centre-half Jack Hobbs joined Leicester City for £400,000 after spending the whole of the season on loan at the Walkers Stadium. He had made just five senior reds appearances. All-star SteG 2005 - Steven Gerrard was named in the PFA Team of the Year for the second season running, the only reds player to be so honoured. He was eventually named in the team eight times, a record in the Premier League era. International beginning 1977 - Future red Mark Lawrenson made his senior debut for the Republic of Ireland as they were held to a goalless draw in Dublin by Poland. He went on to amass a total of 39 caps. 2008 – Future reds reserves forward Nikola Sarić played for Denmark Under-19’s as they lost 2-1 to Estonia in Tallinn. 2019 – Curtis Jones scored, with Bobby Duncan also playing, as England Under-18’s beat Mexico 3-2 in a friendly in Dubai. Disappointment against the Trotters 1893 - We drew 1-1 with Bolton Wanderers in a friendly at Anfield with Hugh McQueen notching our goal. 1943 - We thumped Wanderers 6-3 in a Wartime League match at Burnden Park that also counted for the Lancashire Cup. Cyril Done and Don Welsh both bagged braces, with George Kaye and Michael Hulligan also on the scoresheet. Youngsters in Euro action 2001 – John Welsh and future reds Alberto Aquilani and Glen Johnson all represented their country at Under-16’s level in the European Championships Finals, with England beating Switzerland 2-0 in Huddersfield, and Italy losing 4-3 to Hungary in Harrogate. Meanwhile, Christian Poulsen played for Denmark Under-21’s as they lost 2-0 to Slovenia in a friendly in Farum, while fellow future red Fernando Torres struck twice as Spain Under-21’s thumped Belgium 5-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Durham. Harry for the League 1897 - Forward Harry Bradshaw played for the Football League as they lost 3-0 to a Scottish League side. Red beginnings 1942 - The legendary Ian Callaghan was born in Toxteth. He signed professional terms in March 1960 and made a record 857 reds appearances, bagging 68 goals while helping us to five League titles, two FA Cups, one European Cup, two UEFA Cups, UEFA Super Cup and three FA Charity Shields, as well as winning the Football Writers’ Player of the Year award in 1973/74. 1992 – Senegalese forward Sadio Mané was born in Sédhiou. He signed from Southampton for an initial £30m in June 2016, netting 120 times in 269 outings before moving on to Bayern München for an initial €32m in June 2022. He had helped us to claim the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup and League Cup. 1930 - Keeper Tommy Younger was born in Edinburgh. He arrived from Hibernian in June 1956 for £9,000 and made 127 reds appearances, as well as winning 24 caps for Scotland. He returned north of the border after three years at Anfield to join Falkirk, and later became the President of the Scottish FA. He died in January 1984. 1926 – Defender Bert Shears played the first of his sixteen reds games with outside-right Archie Rawlings appearing for the 67th and last time as we won 1-0 at Bury thanks to a late Harry Chambers goal. 1915 – Left-half John Shield was born in South Shields. He moved from Bishop Auckland in ecember 1935, but only played one senior game before returning to his former club in October 1936. 1908 – Forward Charlie Hewitt was born in Greatham. He signed from Tottenham Hotspur for £75 in May 1907, bagging six goals in sixteen outings before joining West Bromwich Albion for the same fee the following April. Digger honoured 1988 - John Barnes was named the PFA Player of the Year, with Steve McMahon and Peter Beardsley rounding out the top three, and Alan Hansen also nominated in the shortlist of six contenders. Another Euro semi 2018 – We won 2-1 at Manchester City in the second leg of our UEFA Champions League Quarter-final, to progress 5-1 on aggregate. Gabriel Jesus gave the home side a very early lead on the night, one of his six goals past us to date, before Leroy Sané had a goal incorrectly rules out for offside, a decision that led to City boss Pep Guardiola being sent to the stands for his protests. Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino both scored after the break to take us through to a Semi-final against Roma. 2022 – We drew a League 2-2 at the Etihad Stadium, with Kevin de Bruyne giving the home side an early lead thanks to a deflection, one of his four strikes against us, before Diogo Jota equalised. Gabriel Jesus restored City’s lead just before the break, but birthday boy Sadio Mané levelled the scores again straight after half time to leave City one point ahead in the title race with seven games remaining. Beating the Potters 2016 – We thumped Stoke City 4-1 at Anfield, with Albert Moreno and Daniel Sturridge netting either side of Bojan Krkić’s headed goal before the break. This was Moreno’s third and final reds strike. Divock Origi bagged a second-half brace. 1971 - Peter Thompson struck the only goal of our top-flight trip to City’s old Victoria Ground stadium, his 54th and last goal for the club. Another keeper walks 2012 – Maxi Rodríguez scored his last two reds goals as we raced into a two-goal lead at Blackburn Rovers. However, following Pepe Reina’s dismissal in the previous game, his stand-in Alexander Doni was then sent off, with Brad Jones coming on to save a Yakubu penalty with his first touch, although he then drew the home side level with a brace that included another spot kick. Andy Carroll headed in a stoppage-time winner. Tonking City 1982 - Sammy Lee, Craig Johnston, Alan Kennedy and Ian Rush all netted as we thumped Manchester City 5-0 at Maine Road, with Phil Neal scoring from the spot. Mo again 2021 – Mohamed Salah scored in his third consecutive reds game as we came from behind to beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Anfield behind closed doors. Ollie Watkins gave the visitors the lead with one of his five goals past us to date, with Trent Alexander-Arnold bagging an injury time winner. 1976 – We shared a goalless draw at Aston Villa, with The Guardian stating that the reds “once more… employed their scorched earth policy for away matches”. Seventh heaven 2006 - We thumped Birmingham City 7-0 at St. Andrews in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup, our record away victory in the competition, and our biggest win to that date under Rafael Benítez. Sami Hyypiä put us in front in the first minute, with Peter Crouch soon also scoring with his head, to get on target in his third consecutive game. Crouch added a third just before the break, with substitute Fernando Morientes scoring on the hour. John Arne Riise belted in our fifth, with Olivier Tebily’s own goal and a shot from another sub, Djibril Cissé, completing the rout. Momo Sissoko made his comeback from his eye injury at SL Benfica a month earlier, while attempting to wear a set of protective goggles! New boss 1951 – Don Welsh took over as the club’s Manager. He had guested for the reds during the Second World War, and was in charge at Anfield for 232 games. He has the indignity of being our first Manager to be sacked, in May 1956, after presiding over our relegation from the top flight in 1954, before failing to lead us back to the promised land. European victories 1984 - A superb reds victory came as we won 4-1 at SL Benfica, then led by Sven-Göran Eriksson, in the second leg of our European Cup Third Round tie. Shaun Derry and ex-red Djibril Cissé both headed in before Jamie Mackie scored a last-gasp winner. Beaten down the East Lancs 2010 - We lost 2-1 at Manchester United as Fernando Torres headed us in front before Wayne Rooney converted the rebound of a penalty saved by Pepe Reina, one of his seven goals past us. Ji-Sung Park struck the winner after an hour with Torres and Yossi Benayoun both wasting good chances to draw us level. Signing on 1995 - Mark Kennedy signed from Millwall for £1.5m. He joined from his hometown club in the summer of 2016 and has struck once in 29 solid senior appearances by the time of his 27th birthday. 1929 – Scottish centre-forward Sam Shields was born in Denny, Stirlings. He signed from Cowdenbeath in May 1949, only playing once before joining Airdrieonians in July 1951. 1918 – Winger Harman van den Berg was born in Cape Town. He signed from South African side Peninsular in October 1937, but only managed to score three times in nineteen games before injuries and the Second World War intervened. 1886 - John Bovill was born in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire. He signed from Chesterfield Town in April 1911 and went on to bag seven goals in 29 reds games before leaving for Linfield in 1914. 1924 – Scottish forward ‘Wee’ Ronald Orr died. He netted 39 times in 112 reds games after signing from Newcastle United for £350 in April 1908. Shown the door 1983 - Emlyn Hughes was sacked as Manager of Rotherham United as they headed towards the old Third Division. More international firsts and lasts 1891 - Future reds player, Manager and Director Matt McQueen won his second and final cap for Scotland as they beat Wales 4-3 in the British International Championships in Wrexham. 1896 - Ex-reds left-back Duncan McLean won the first of his two caps as the Scots thumped Wales 4-0 in Dundee in the same competition, with Robert Neill bagging a brace as he won the first of two senior caps, and only one on loan with the reds from Hibernian. 2018 – Future red Cody Gakpo debuted for the Dutch Under-19’s as they thumped Norway 6-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Germany. On the same day, Adam Lewis debuted for England at the same level as they thumped Hungary 4-1 in a qualifier in North Macedonia. 2019 – Ibrahima Konaté debuted for France Under-21’s as they drew 2-2 with Germany in Essen, while fellow future red Dominik Szoboszlai made his senior bow for Hungary in their 2-0 European Championships qualifying defeat in Slovakia, with ex-red Péter Gulácsi also featuring. Dominic Solanke won his first England Under-21’s cap as a Bournemouth player as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Poland at Ashton Gate, with Kamil Grabara in the visitors’ goal. On the same day, Ryan Babel won his first cap as a Fulham player as the Netherlands thumped Belarus 4-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Rotterdam, with skipper Virgil van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum both on target. Also in international action 1904 – Fred Morris and Maurice Parry both played for Wales as they lost 1-0 to Ireland in the British International Championships in Bangor. 2963 – Ian Callaghan played for England Under-23’s in their goalless friendly draw with Yugoslavia at Old Trafford. 2007 – Adam Hammill played for England Under-19’s in their 1-0 defeat of Turkey in Doncaster, while future red Kolo Touré won his fiftieth senior cap as the Ivory Coast won a friendly 3-0 in Mauritius. 2008 – Future red Nikola Saric featured for the Danish Under-17’s in their 1-0 defeat by Switzerland in a European Championships qualifier in Croatia. 2015 – Future red Caoimhín Kelleher played as the Republic of Ireland Under-17’s drew 2-2 with Greece in a European Championships qualifier in Poland. 2016 – Ben Woodburn featured as Wales Under-17’s lost a European Championships qualifier 1-0 to Sweden in Croatia. 2017 – Future red Dominik Szoboszlai played for Hungary Under-17’s as they lost a European Championships qualifier 1-0 to Israel. -
We always win in Wales 2003 - Goals from Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen handed us a 2-0 win over Manchester United as we won the Worthington Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium, to claim our seventh League Cup with Jerzy Dudek being named man of the match. John Arne Riise was playing in his hundredth reds game, while Milan Baroš suffered the rare indignity of coming on from the bench and then later himself being substituted. Happy birthdays 1924 - Centre-half Laurie Hughes was born in Liverpool, just off Everton Road. He signed from Tranmere Rovers in February 1943 and made 326 reds appearances, netting just once. He helped us to the first post-war League title and the FA Cup Final three years later and was the first red to appear in the World Cup Finals later that year. 1994 - Lazar Marković was born in Čačak, Serbia. He signed from SL Benfica for £20m in July 2014, netting three times in 34 games before moving to Fulham on a free transfer in January 2019 after a series of loan spells away from Anfield. 1955 - Forward Kevin Kewley was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in March 1972 but only ever made one senior appearance for the reds, as a substitute for Terry McDermott against Middlesbrough at Anfield in February 1978. He was sold to Dallas Tornado for £18,000 on his 23rd birthday, playing there for five years before moving to indoor side Wichita Wings. He retired from playing in 1990 and was last heard of coaching youth soccer and working in Wichita, Kansas. 1892 - Full-back William Jenkinson was born in Golborne, Lancashire. He signed from South Liverpool in 1916 but only played thirteen times before moving to Wigan Borough in June 1921. 1989 – Ex-reserves midfielder Ray Putterill was born in Liverpool. He starred in the victorious 2007 FA Youth Cup campaign and started training at Melwood later that summer. He scored on his first appearance for the senior side, in a 3-0 friendly win at Crewe Alexandra in August 2007, and featured on the bench in our Carling Cup tie at Reading a month later. He was released in the summer of 2009. Luis at the treble 2013 – Luis Suárez scored a hat-trick in our 4-0 win at Wigan Athletic to take him past twenty League goals for the season, after Stewart Downing had headed in an early opener. Most recently 2022 – We beat Norwich City 2-1 in the FA Cup Fifth Round at Anfield on our way to claiming the trophy for the eighth time. Takumi Minamino struck twice in the first half. To and fro with the Toffees 1934 – Forward Tosh Johnson signed from Everton, with whom he had won the League and FA Cup. However, he was past his best by the time he arrived at Anfield. He played 38 times for us, notching eight times before joining Darwen in August 1936. 1927 – Inside-left Dick Forshaw was sold to Everton for £3,750. He won two League titles after joining the reds in July 1919, scoring an impressive 124 times in 288 games. He has the unique honour of being the only player ever to claim League championship medals with both Merseyside clubs, helping the Blues to the title in his first full season across the park. 1922 – Welsh forward Billy Matthews moved on to Bristol City. After eight goals in thirteen Wartime reds games, he signed on from Colwyn Bay in 1918, netting four times in nine senior outings. A Fab strike 2008 - Fábio Aurélio scored his first reds goal as we won 3-1 at Bolton Wanderers. We opened the scoring when keeper Jussi Jääskeläinen spilled a Steven Gerrard shot that was heading wide and knocked it into his own net. Ryan Babel also got on the scoresheet as he completed his first full ninety minutes in the League, while Avi Cohen’s son Tamir scored for the Trotters. Red centurions 2016 – Keeper Simon Mignolet played his hundredth League game for the reds as we gained some revenge for our League Cup Final defeat three days earlier by beating Manchester City 3-0 at Anfield. Adam Lallana and James Milner scored in the first half, with Roberto Firmino on target after the break. 1907 – We lost a top-flight encounter 1-0 at Manchester City’s old Hyde Road ground, with Ned Doig saving a penalty from George Dorsett. 1968 - Tommy Smith made his 150th consecutive reds appearance, in a 1-1 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Roger Hunt bagged our goal, with Derek Dougan netting one of his four against the reds. 1985 – John Wark netted the only goal of Nottingham Forest’s visit to Anfield from the spot as Ian Rush played his 200th game for the club. Back to the Cottage 2002 - We beat Fulham 2-0 in what was billed as our last ever match at Craven Cottage, thanks to goals from Nicolas Anelka and Jari Litmanen. The game will also be remembered for a stunning last-ditch tackle from Stéphane Henchoz to deny Steve Marlet a goal. Stephen Wright played his 21st and final senior reds game that day. 1957 - We also won there in a Second Division match, with John Evans bagging his 53rd and final reds goal and Billy Liddell also on target in our 2-1 victory. Elton John’s cousin Roy Dwight scored the last of his four goals against us. Anfield trebles 1898 - Derby County trounced us 5-1 at Anfield in an FA Cup Third Round replay, with three from John Boag, one of only two FA Cup hat-tricks we have conceded and the first of his six strikes past ud. Frank Becton bagged our consolation from the spot as forwards Dan Cunliffe and Abe Hartley, and centre-half Joe McQue all played their final reds games. Steve Bloomer bagged two of his fourteen goals against us. 1895 – We won in the League by the same score in L4 when Jimmy Ross nabbed a brace and Davy Hannah, Harry Bradshaw and Neil Kerr were also on the scoresheet, with this being Kerr’s third and final goal for the reds. 1932 - A more welcome hat-trick was scored by Gordon Hodgson, one of his seventeen for the club, in a 4-1 home League win over West Bromwich Albion, when Gordon Gunson also netted. Billy ‘Ginger’ Richardson bagged the first of his nine strikes against the reds. Beginnings and ends 1986 - We won 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur live on TV with Steve Perryman playing his final Spurs game, his 655th in the League. Ian Rush bagged his twentieth goal of the season in the final minute, with Jan Mølby also netting past ex-red Ray Clemence after Chris Waddle had given the home side an early lead. 1935 – Forward Sam English netted his 26th and final reds goal as we lost 3-2 at Grimsby Town in the top flight with Gordon Hodgson also on target. Pat Glover struck twice for the Mariners, with Ben Burley also on target. 1913 - Scottish centre-half Robert Neill died. He stood at only five foot four inches but won five full international caps. He signed from Hibernian in May 1896 after a loan spell, netting three times in 27 reds games before joining Rangers in April 1897, with whom he won the League and Cup. 1912 - Forward Billy Lacey made his reds bow in a 1-1 League draw at home to Middlesbrough, with Tom Miller grabbing our goal, his first of 56 for the club. European Cup defeats 1977 - We lost 1-0 at Saint-Étienne in the Third Round first leg, but of course famously fought back to qualify for the Semi-finals in the Anfield return. Dominique Bathenay volleyed the only goal of the game, after Steve Heighway had hit the post at the other end. 1983 - We were less fortunate, losing 2-0 at Widzew Lódz at the same stage before only winning 3-2 at Anfield. Bruce Grobbelaar was culpable for the first goal as he dropped a cross. International firsts 1889 - Anfield hosted its first ever international as England trounced Ireland 6-1 in the British International Championships. 1960 - Future red Ian St. John bagged a brace on his debut for Scotland Under-23’s as they drew 4-4 with England at Ibrox. Jimmy Greaves netted a treble for the English. 2010 – Robbie Keane won his first cap while on loan with Celtic as the Republic of Ireland lost 2-0 to Brazil at the Emirates Stadium. Mario Balotelli won his sixteenth and last cap while playing alongside fellow future red Fabio Borini for Italy Under-21’s in their 2-0 European Championships qualifying defeat of Péter Gulácsi’s Hungary. David N’Gog, future red Mamadou Sakho and ex-red Mikel San José also featured for the Under-21’s on the same day, with Chris Mavinga playing for France Under-19’s. 2012 – Mohamed Salah played in Egypt’s goalless friendly draw with DR Congo in Qatar. 1901 - Right-half Maurice Parry became our first Welsh international, in their 1-1 draw with Scotland in Wrexham, with ex-reds half-back Barney Battles appearing for the Scots. 1903 - Parry won his seventh cap in their 2-1 defeat by England in Portsmouth, again in the British International Championships. On the move 1998 - Nigel Spackman resigned as Manager of Sheffield United after seven months in charge, following the sale of several players for financial reasons. 1995 - David Burrows signed for Coventry City from Everton for £1.1m. He played 130 times as the Sky Blues held their own in the top flight. 2000 - Reserves striker Jon Newby joined Crewe Alexandra on loan. He failed to score in six first-team appearances. 2012 – Defender Stephen Wright signed for Wrexham, notching once in 39 outings before moving on to Welsh Premier League side Aberystwyth Town in September 2014. 2020 - Daniel Sturridge received a four-month worldwide ban for breaching betting rules, having his contract with Trabzonspor terminated by mutual consent on the same day. Double debutants 1991 - Kenny Dalglish’s final signing David Speedie scored on his reds debut to equalise a Steve Bruce penalty as we drew 1-1 with Manchester United at Old Trafford. It was the first of his six goals in just fourteen games for us. 1894 - Left-half William Hughes made his only reds appearance in a 4-0 home League defeat of Northwich Victoria. Duncan McLean scored from the spot, with our other goals coming from Harry Bradshaw and a Jimmy Stott brace, his last goals for the club. Mixed derby fortunes 1968 - Our last defeat on this day for over fifty years came in a League derby at Goodison Park, when Howard Kendall netted the only goal of the game, with Chris Lawler making his 200th reds appearance. 2007 - We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield, with Craig Bellamy having a goal disallowed. Rafael Benítez angered Blues fans by correctly referring to them as a “smaller team” in the aftermath of this game. 1990 - Our other first-class derby brought a 2-1 win at Anfield thanks to a John Barnes goal and a penalty from Peter Beardsley, with Graeme Sharp heading in the Blues’ goal, one of his seven against us. 1945 - We lost a Wartime League fixture at Goodison, with future reds boss Phil Taylor on target in a 4-1 defeat. On the way to Wembley 1965 - We set off towards our first ever FA Cup triumph, winning our Third Round replay 2-0 at Stockport County, who were then bottom of the Fourth Division. Vladimír Šmicer opened the scoring, with Robbie Fowler netting twice. Even at the Etihad 2013 - We drew 2-2 at Manchester City. Edin Džeko opened the scoring with one of his five strikes against the reds. Ex-Sky Blue Daniel Sturridge and Steven Gerrard put us in front before Sergio Agüero levelled the scores after Pepe Reina rashly rushed off his line, one of his seven goals past us. 1973 – We were held to a goalless draw by City in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie at Anfield, before being knocked out in the replay four days later. Award winners 2008 - Martin Škrtel was named Slovakia’s Player of the Year for 2007, with boss Rafael Benítez being awarded with an Honorary Doctorate from the Miguel Hernandez University (Elche) in Spain on the same day, although he did not receive the honour for another four months. 2013 - Steven Gerrard was named the FA England Player of the Year at a ceremony at St. George’s Park, with clubmate Jordan Henderson winning the Under-21’s Player of the Year award. Half a century for Shanks 1962 - Bill Shankly led the reds to his fiftieth League win in his ninetieth game in charge. Brighton & Hove Albion were the visitors to Anfield, with Gerry Byrne scoring his first reds goal and Roger Hunt and Ian St. John also netting in our 3-1 victory, after we had been behind at half time. Earning our Spurs 1934 - Berry Nieuwenhuys struck twice as we beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at Anfield, with Gordon Hodgson netting from the spot. George Hunt struck the first of his five goals against the reds. 1996 - We entertained the north London outfit again, although this time the match ended goalless. Future Spur John Scales made his fiftieth League appearance for the reds in this game. Mixed fortunes against the Cottagers 1951 - We beat Fulham 2-0 in a First Division meeting at Anfield with Bill Jones and Billy Liddell on the scoresheet. 1912 - We lost 3-0 at Craven Cottage in a Second Round FA Cup tie, with Tim Coleman bagging the last two of his nine goals past us and Herbert Pearce also on target. This was Tom Watson’s 600th game in charge, while William Stuart appeared for the fifth and final time. Happy birthdays 1931 – Right-back John Molyneux was born in Warrington. He signed from Chester for £5,500 in June 1955, bagging three goals in 249 games, but did not survive Bill Shankly’s early clear-out, returning to his former club in August 1962. 2001 – Centre-half Rhys Williams was born in Preston. He has made nineteen senior appearances since turning pro in February 2019, also spending much of his time out on loan. On the move 1995 - Steve Harkness joined First Division Southend United on loan. He played six times while at Roots Hall, before returning to establish himself in the reds first-team. 2011 - Dietmar Hamann joined Leicester City as a First Team Coach, working under Sven-Göran Eriksson for the rest of the season. 2021 – Czech keeper Vitezslav Jaros joined Irish Premier League side St. Patrick's Athletic on loan, being named as their Player of the Year and helping them to claim the FAI Cup. In comes Harry 1936 - Right-half Harry Eastham signed from Blackpool on a free transfer. His career was badly interrupted by the Second World War as he bagged four goals in 68 reds games, but he did help us to claim the League title in 1947 before joining Tranmere Rovers in May 1948. Making the Final 2022 – Mohamed Salah captained Egypt as they were held to a goalless draw by Cameroon in their Africa Cup of Nations Semi-final in Yaoundé, before they progressed in a penalty shoot-out. Ex-red Kevin Stewart featured for Jamaica as they lost a World Cup qualifier 1-0 to Costa Rica in Kingston on the same day. Stevie’s day 1996 - Steven Gerrard made his debut for England Under-16’s, coming on as a substitute in their 4-0 thumping of Denmark. 2008 - Gerrard was named England’s best player for 2007 by the visitors to TheFA.com. 2009 – He was voted the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month for January 2009. Other reds games 1923 – We won an FA Cup Second Round tie 2-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, thanks to goals from Dick Johnson and Dick Forshaw. We were knocked out by Sheffield United at Anfield at the next hurdle. 1906 – Alf West scored as we beat Barnsley 1-0 at the same stage in a game that was moved from Oakwell to Anfield. We reached the Semi-final where we lost out to Everton that campaign. 1900 – We defeated Blackburn Rovers 3-1 in a top-flight encounter in L4. International reds 1900 – Ex-red Robert Neill won his second and last cap for Scotland in their 5-2 defeat of Wales in the British International Championships at Pittodrie. 1945 - Matt Busby skippered Scotland as they lost 3-2 to England in a Wartime international at Villa Park. Fellow reds Willie Fagan, Jim Harley and Billy Liddell all also played. 1971 – Emlyn Hughes played for England in their 1-0 European Championships qualifying win in Malta. 1988 – Future red Ronnie Rosenthal played as Israel lost a friendly 2-0 to Romania in Haifa. 2004 - Ex-red Daniel Sjölund won his first cap as an official Djurgårdens IF player, winning his third cap as a substitute in Finland’s 2-1 friendly defeat by China in Guangzhou. On the same day, ex-red Rigobert Song captained Cameroon as they drew 0-0 with Egypt in an Africa Cup of Nations Finals group game in Tunisia. Signing on 2015 – Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho signed a new contract until 2020, later further extended. He went on to notch 54 times in 201 reds games before moving on to Barcelona for a mammoth initial £105m fee in January 2018. -
Shanks starts out 1959 - Bill Shankly’s first game in charge ended in a convincing 4-0 defeat at home by Cardiff City, who were promoted ahead of us that year. A crowd of 27,291 watched the floodlit game which resulted in our eighth League defeat of the season and remained our most recent meeting with the Bluebirds until our Carling Cup tie in October 2007. Full-back Allan Jones played the first of his five reds games, with outside-right Fred Morris appearing for the 48th and last time. Derek Tapscott struck the last two of his six goals against the reds, with Johnny Watkins nabbing the final one of his four past us, and Joe Bonson one of his five. Merry Christmas Everton 2016 – Sadio Mané bagged an injury-time winner, the only goal of our game at Goodison Park. Happy birthdays 1986 - Ryan Babel was born in Amsterdam. He signed from Ajax for £11.5m in July 2007, proving a very useful asset in his first season, especially from the bench, as he equalled Djibril Cissé’s club record of seven strikes in a season as a substitute. However, subsequent campaigns were far less productive, and he struck a total of 22 times in 146 appearances before being sold to German side TSG 1899 Hoffenheim for £6m in January 2011. 1916 – Left-winger George Paterson was born in Aberdeen. He struck once in three outings after arriving from the Hall Russell’s works team in May 1937, moving on to Swindon Town for their record fee in October 1946. He later returned to Anfield in a coaching role under Bill Shankly. 1896 – Inside-forward Harry Lewis was born in Birkenhead. He scored 57 goals in 101 wartime games for the reds before netting twelve times in seventy outings. He helped us to claim the League title in 1922, moving on to Hull City in October 1923. 1865 – Scottish inside-right Jock Smith was born in Kilmarnock. He signed from Sunderland in May 1892, bagging five goals in eleven outings, moving on to The Wednesday in August 1893. Sadly, he committed suicide in January 1911 after the death of one of his children two days before. Mo again 2020 – Mohamed Salah scored in his fifth consecutive game, netting twice as we trounced Crystal Palace 7-0 behind closed doors at Selhurst Park to extend our lead at the top of the table to five points. Roberto Firmino also bagged a brace, with Takumi Minamino, Sadio Mané and Jordan Henderson also on target. Yee-haw! A new keeper 1997 - American keeper Brad Friedel signed from US side Columbus Crew for £1m. He went on to appear 31 times between our sticks before joining Blackburn Rovers in November 2000 on a free transfer. Disappointing debuts 1953 - Left-half Geoff Twentyman and keeper Dave Underwood both made their reds bows as we were thumped 5-1 by Manchester United at Old Trafford on our way down to the Second Division with Louis Bimpson grabbing our consolation. Left-back Eddie Spicer broke his leg for the second time in his career in a collision with our debutant custodian in what was to be his 168th and final reds game. In fact, he suffered nineteen fractures and was in and out of hospital for a year, having it set and reset before he was able to walk again. Tommy Taylor bagged a treble for United, the last of his four goals past us, with Jackie Blanchflower and Dennis Viollet also on target. A milestone at Leeds Road 1936 - We played our 1,500th League game, although we were thumped 4-0 at Huddersfield Town. Jimmy Richardson struck the last two of his eight goals past the reds, with Len Butt and Willie McFadyen also on the scoresheet. 1970 - We returned to Leeds Road for another top-flight fixture, this time being held to a goalless draw. Premiership records 1992 - We suffered our worst ever Premier League defeat in Graeme Souness’s hundredth game in charge, going down 5-1 at Coventry City, with Jamie Redknapp becoming our first dismissal in the newly renamed League, after scoring our goal. Stig Inge Bjørnebye made his reds debut in this game, just a day after signing for the club. Brian Borrows bagged a brace, including a penalty, with Mick Quinn also netting twice and Kevin Gallacher scoring on target. Recent dismissals 2021 – Andy Robertson saw red in our 2-2 draw at Tottenham Hotspur. Harry Kane struck one of his nine goals past us to date before Diogo Jota equalised. Robertson headed us in front before Heung-min Son scored one of his six goals against us. Robertson was then dismissed. 2009 – Javier Mascherano was dismissed in our woeful 2-0 defeat at Portsmouth, with Jamie Carragher playing his 600th game for the club and Andrea Dossena making his 31st and last reds appearance. 2007 - Peter Crouch was sent off as we lost 2-0 at Chelsea in a League Cup Fifth Round tie, our seventeenth meeting with the Blues under Rafael Benítez. Momo Sissoko played his 87th and final reds game as the deadlock was broken by a deflected Frank Lampard effort, one of his eight goals past us to date, before Andriy Shevchenko rounded off the scoring at the death. Jack Hobbs also made his last senior outing for us, only his fifth. 2004 - Lee Bowyer was sent off as we beat Newcastle United 3-1 at Anfield. Patrick Kluivert opened the scoring despite being yards offside but we levelled the scores through a Titus Bramble own goal, with Neil Mellor putting us ahead before the break with his sixth and final reds strike. Milan Baroš completed the scoring. Anfield debutants 1931 - Right-back Willie Steel made the first of his 128 reds appearances in our 1-1 draw with Derby County, when Gordon Hodgson nabbed our goal and Peter Ramage netting one of his five goals against the reds. 1896 - We also faced the Rams, when Robert Neill struck the first of his three reds goals with Bill Michael also netting as we lost 3-2 at the Baseball Ground, with Harry Bradshaw playing his hundredth reds game. Steve Bloomer struck the first of his fourteen goals past us, with John Miller and Jimmy Stevenson also on target. 1914 - Wilf Bartrop made his reds bow as we lost 2-1 to Oldham Athletic, with Fred Pagnam grabbing our goal. European disappointment 1978 - We beat European Cup Winners’ Cup holders Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht 2-1 in thick fog at Anfield in the second leg of our UEFA Super Cup tie, which meant that we lost out 4-3 on aggregate. Emlyn Hughes scored his 49th and last reds goal, with David Fairclough also striking on the night. Steve Ogrizovic played instead of Ray Clemence, who was on the bench, missing his first European fixture for the reds since November 1969, a run of 67 consecutive appearances in continental competition. François van der Elst netted for the visitors, having already struck in the first leg. 200 for Gerry 1964 - Gerry Byrne played his 200th reds game as we beat Blackburn Rovers 3-2 at home, thanks to a Tommy Smith goal and brace from Roger Hunt. Andy McEvoy struck the last of his four goals against the reds, with future Wales boss Mike England also on target. Five for Dickie 1942 - Dickie Dorsett scored five goals, including a penalty, as we beat Tranmere Rovers 6-1 in a Wartime League game at Anfield. Cyril Done struck our other goal. Starting out 1968 - Phil Neal signed professionally for Northampton Town, who were relegated to the Fourth Division that season. He often played in midfield for the Cobblers, but was versatile enough to fill a number of other positions before being signed by Bob Paisley for £66,000 in October 1974. 1925 – Gordon Hodgson made his reds bow, in a 1-0 reserves defeat at Manchester City, a few days after signing from Transvaal. Mixed fortunes against the Blades We have twice faced Sheffield United in the First Division on this day in history. 1908 - Ronald Orr netted a brace as we won 2-1 at Anfield. 1925 - Dick Forshaw struck our consolation as we lost 3-1 at Bramall Lane. Elisha Scott saved a penalty from Fred Tunstall, who also struck one of his eight goals against the reds. Harry Johnson nabbed one of his seven past us, with Bert Menlove also on target. Centre-forward Danny Shone featured for the 81st and final time. Beating the Owls We have twice defeated Sheffield Wednesday in the top flight at Anfield on this day. 1987 - Gary Gillespie grabbed the only goal of the game as we reached nineteen League games unbeaten, equalling the club record from the start of a season. 1998 - Patrik Berger and Michael Owen struck as we won 2-0. Shaken but not stirred We have twice been held to draws by Bury on this day in history. 1903 – Jack Cox bagged a brace in a top-flight encounter with the Shakers at Gigg Lane. Charles Sagar netted the last two of his four goals against the reds. 1898 – George Allan converted a first-minute penalty in a Lancashire Senior Cup game at Anfield. Ronnie for Israel 1984 - Future red Ronnie Rosenthal made his senior international debut as a substitute in Israel’s 2-0 friendly defeat of Luxembourg in Petah Tikva. Ex-red Avi Cohen played too. 1978 – Cohen was also in international action, as Israel were held to a 1-1 draw by Romania in a friendly in Jaffa. Future reds on target 1990 - Karl-Heinz Riedle struck his first goal as a S.S. Lazio player in what was Germany’s first match since reunification. They beat Switzerland 4-0 in a friendly in Stuttgart. 1997 – Future red Harry Kewell struck the goal that took Australia through to the Final of the Confederations Cup in Saudi Arabia as they beat Uruguay 1-0 courtesy of a golden goal. On the same day, future red Vladimír Šmicer was on the losing side as Brazil also reached the Final, winning 2-0. Other reds game 1973 – John Richards bagged the only goal of our League Cup Fifth Round trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers, one of his five goals against the reds. Mac the Terrier 2008 - Terry McDermott was appointed Assistant Manager of Huddersfield Town. They finished ninth in League One at the end of that season and he stayed with the Terriers until being sacked in February 2012 after Lee Clark was dismissed as Manager. Czechs bouncing 2002 - Milan Baroš and Vladimír Šmicer were named among the top ten Czech footballers in the country’s annual Player of the Year poll. Baroš came fourth in the Golden Ball awards while Šmicer was placed tenth. Borussia Dortmund’s Tomáš Rosický was the overall winner. New challenge for Newell 1996 - Former reserves forward Mike Newell joined West Ham United on loan from Birmingham City. He made seven appearances for the Hammers, including a goalless League draw at Anfield, without registering. 1997 - Defender Barry Jones joined York City on loan from Wrexham. He went on to play 134 times for them after signing permanently a month later. Also in international action 1979 – Kenny Dalglish and future red John Wark both played as Scotland lost a European Championships qualifier 3-1 to Belgium at Hampden Park. 2013 – Future red Marko Grujić featured as Serbia Under-18’s drew 1-1 with Germany. 2016 – Fulham’s Fábio Carvalho played for England Under-15’s as they lost 3-1 to Turkey at St. George’s Park. -
Left-back birthdays 1980 - John Arne Riise was born in Molde. He made 348 reds appearances, scoring 31 times, following his £4m arrival from AS Monaco in June 2001, but left for Roma for the same fee in June 2008. He helped us to win the European Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and two FA Charity Shields in his time at Anfield. 1979 – Brazilian left-back Fábio Aurélio was born in São Carlos. He arrived on a Bosman free transfer in July 2006, netting four goals in 134 games, helping us to claim the FA Community Shield in his very first senior appearance. He was released for the second time in June 2012. Jocky on the off 1977 - Alan Hansen made his reds debut as we beat Derby County 1-0 at Anfield, with Terry McDermott on the scoresheet. Zico sets a record 1983 - Phil Neal made his 417th consecutive reds appearance in our 1-0 defeat at Manchester United, with Frank Stapleton on target. It was also his 365th consecutive League appearance – both still club records. He had to miss the next month after damaging a thigh in this game. 1998 - We also lost at Old Trafford, going down 2-0 thanks to goals from Dennis Irwin and Paul Scholes. Another record for St. Michael 2003 - Michael Owen scored his 21st goal in European competition, a new club record, to hand us a 1-1 draw at Slovenian side Olimpija Ljubljana in the opening game of our UEFA Cup campaign. Anton Zlogar’s opening goal was the 250th we conceded under the sole charge of Gérard Houllier. Owen has since been comprehensively overtaken by Steven Gerrard. Most recently 2020 – Diogo Jota, Kostas Tsimikas and Rhys Williams all made their reds bows as we thumped Lincoln City 7-2 in a League Cup Third Round tie behind closed doors at the LNER Stadium. Xherdan Shaqiri netted his eighth and final reds goal with Takumi Minamino and Curtis Jones both bagging a brace. Marko Grujić scored his only goal for the club before Divock Origi scored as he captained the side for the first time, after Virgil can Dijk had left the pitch. 2016 – We trounced Hull City 5-1 at Anfield, with Adam Lallana opening the scoring. Ahmed El Mohamadi was sent off for handball with James Milner converting the resultant penalty. Sadio Mané and Philippe Coutinho both struck before Milner scored again from the spot after Daniel Sturridge was felled. 2011 – We beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Anfield. We went two goals ahead when Roger Johnson deflected in a Charlie Adam strike with Luis Suárez also on target, as Steven Fletcher pulled a goal back shortly after the break. 7,500 up 1994 – Ian Rush scored the 7,500th goal in the club’s history as we drew 1-1 at Newcastle United. Rob Lee had opened the scoring shortly after the break, with Philippe Albert dismissed for the home side late on. Ex-reds Peter Beardsley and Barry Venison both featured for the Geordies. Sent off again 2005 - We drew 2-2 at Birmingham City, with Neil Kilkenny being sent off for the home side on his debut, one of fifteen opposition players dismissed against the reds that season. Our goals came from Luis García and a Djibril Cissé penalty, with Stephen Warnock scoring an own goal and Walter Pandiani also on target. Off the mark 1892 – Forward John Miller netted on his reds bow as we thumped Bury 4-0 in a Lancashire League game at Anfield. Jonathan Cameron and Malcolm McVean also struck, while James Kelso played his only reds game. Kelso sadly committed suicide aged just 29, back in his native Scotland. 1958 – Outside-right Fred Morris scored his first reds goal as we drew 2-2 in a Second Division match at Brighton & Hove Albion, with Billy Liddell also on target. Other birthdays 1949 - Former forward, and coach under Graeme Souness, Phil Boersma was born in Kirkby. He signed professional terms in September 1968 and struck thirty times in 120 reds games, although he struggled to get picked in front of Kevin Keegan and John Toshack. He left the club to join Middlesbrough in December 1975 for £72,000. 1912 – Centre-forward Fred Howe was born in Bredbury in Cheshire. He joined on a free transfer from Hyde United in March 1935, netting 36 times in 94 outings before joining Manchester City in June 1938. He bagged three reds trebles, including notching four times in our record 6-0 derby victory at Anfield in September 1935. 1889 - Irish forward Billy Lacey was born in Enniscorthy, Wexford. He signed from Everton alongside centre-forward Tommy Gracie in a swap deal for £300 and winger Harold Uren in February 1912, going on to play 259 times for the reds, including the FA Cup Final in 1914. He helped us to two League titles in the 1920’s, netting 29 times before crossing the Mersey to join New Brighton in June 1924. 1875 - Centre-half Robert Neill was born in Govan, Glasgow. At five feet four inches he is probably our shortest ever central defender, scoring three times in 27 games after signing on loan from Hibernian in April 1895 and then permanently in May 1896. He left to join Rangers in April 1897. Debuting at Manchester City 1910 - Forward Sam Gilligan scored on his reds debut as we beat City 2-1 at their Hyde Road ground, with Jack Parkinson also on target. 1969 - Phil Boersma made his reds bow on his twentieth birthday in our 3-2 defeat at Maine Road, becoming our first ever League Cup substitute, coming on for goalscorer Alun Evans in this Third Round tie, who bagged an equaliser when George Heslop’s panicked clearance struck him on the chest and went in. Bobby Graham netted our other goal, while Neil Young scored the last of his four goals past us. Ian Bowyer and Mike Doyle also struck for the home side. Supersub back at Anfield 1985 - David Fairclough played for the visitors as Oldham Athletic lost a League Cup Second Round first leg tie 3-0 at Anfield, our hundredth match in the competition. Steve McMahon bagged a brace, with Ian Rush also on target. A rare defeat 1974 - Burnley won 1-0 at Anfield, inflicting one of just eleven home League defeats we suffered in the whole of the 1970’s. Full-back Ian Brennan stunned Ray Clemence from thirty yards with his first ever goal for the club. Signing on 1938 – Utility player Bill Jones signed from Hayfield St Matthews. He scored seventeen times in 277 games for us, with his appearances including the 1950 FA Cup Final when he was preferred to Bob Paisley. Bill won two significant medals in the 1940’s - first he was awarded a Military Medal for his part in the crossing of the Rhine in the Second World War, and then he won a League title medal in 1947 on his return to Anfield. He later scouted for the reds while his grandson Rob represented the club in defence on 243 occasions in the 1990’s. 2021 – Newcastle-born midfielder James McConnell signed pro terms with the reds. He had arrived as an Under-16 from Sunderland. Hooper steps in 1988 - Reserves keeper Mike Hooper replaced Bruce Grobbelaar, who had gone down with meningitis, as we won 3-1 at Southampton thanks to goals from John Aldridge, Peter Beardsley and Jan Mølby. Beating the Blues 1898 - Andrew McCowie bagged a brace, including a penalty, as we won 2-1 at Goodison Park. This was our first ever win across Stanley Park. Harkness on loan 1993 - Steve Harkness joined Second Division Huddersfield Town on loan. He made five appearances for the Terriers before returning to Anfield. 1987 - Reserves midfielder Ken DeMange joined Leeds United. He had never made a senior appearance while on our books, despite winning full international honours during that time. On the same day, future red Javier Mascherano featured as Argentina Under-17’s beat Mali 2-1 after extra time to reach the Semi-finals of the World Championships Finals in Trinidad & Tobago. 2007 – Future reds centre-back Danny Wilson won his fourth and final cap for Scotland Under-17’s as they thumped Belarus 5-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Cumbernauld. 2022 – Lee Jonas and Isaac Mabaya both debuted for England Under-19’s, with Oakley Cannonier bagging his first two goals at this level as they thumped Georgia 6-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Denmark. Diogo Jota scored as Portugal won a UEFA Nations League group game 4-0 in the Czech Republic, while Sadio Mané netted from the spot for Senegal while playing for the first time since joining Bayern München in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Bolivia in France. Steven Caulker captained Sierra Leone to a 4-0 friendly defeat in South Africa, his first game for them as a Fatih Karagümrük player.
