African magic 2000 - A truly momentous day for Rigobert Song, who captained Cameroon to the African Cup of Nations, scoring the decisive penalty in the shoot-out in the Final against host nation Nigeria in Lagos after the game had ended 2-2 after extra-time. This was happening at the same time as we won at Highbury in the League for the final time, hanging on after Titi Camara’s strike to beat Arsenal 1-0. 2004 - Future red Momo Sissoko played for Mali as they lost their Third-place Play-off 2-1 to Nigeria in the same competition in Tunisia. New boss 1923 - Matt McQueen was appointe

In comes Martin 2008 - Centre-back Martin Škrtel signed from Zenit St. Petersburg for £6.5m to become our most expensive defender to date. The tough Slovakian notched eighteen goals in 320 games in total, including one in our Carling Cup win at Wembley in February 2012, moving on to Fenerbahçe SK for £5.5m in July 2016. Unfortunately, he also put through his own net a joint club record eight times. On the same day, ex-red Nicolas Anelka joined Chelsea from Bolton Wanderers for £15m, netting 59 times in 185 appearances before signing for Shanghai Shenhua in December 2001. Happy birthday
  3. Ablett’s able start 1986 - Gary Ablett made his reds bow, replacing the injured Alan Hansen as we held Charlton Athletic to a goalless draw at Selhurst Park. He went on to net just once in 147 games for the reds. Centre-forward Alan Irvine also made the first of his four senior reds appearances in this game. 1924 – Full-back James Garner played the first of his five senior reds games in our goalless Anfield top-flight encounter with Bolton Wanderers. Bienvenue Nicolas 2001 - Nicolas Anelka signed on loan from Paris Saint-Germain. He netted five times in 22 reds games, but was not ta
  4. Michael named Europe’s greatest 2001 - Michael Owen was named European Footballer of the Year, winning the Ballon d’Or ahead of Real Madrid’s Raúl and Bayern München keeper Oliver Khan. Lúis Figo had won it the previous year. Michael had enjoyed a fantastic year, helping us to claim five trophies, while bagging 31 goals in 49 reds games, and a further six in eight outings for England. Sander’s been and gone 2001 - Sander Westerveld left for Real Sociedad in a £3.49m deal. He had kept goal for us 103 times, helping the reds to five trophies in that year. He is currently goalkeeping coa

European semi-finals We have played three European Semi-finals on this day. 1985 - Mark Lawrenson grabbed the only goal of the game in Greece to knock Panathinaikos out 5-0 on aggregate, as we reached our fifth European Cup Final in nine years. 1997 - Our 2-0 defeat of Paris Saint-Germain in the European Cup Winners’ Cup at Anfield was not enough to overcome a three goal first-leg deficit. Robbie Fowler and Mark Wright netted our goals. Robbie’s strike was his seventh in the competition, a club record. 2018 – Mohamed Salah scored in his seventh consecutive reds game, netting twice p

Stevie off but derby joy 2006 - Steven Gerrard was sent off at home to Everton for two quick-fire yellow cards before Phil Neville put us ahead at the end of the first half with a superb headed own goal from a corner. Luis García put us 2-0 up with a beautiful lob soon after the restart, our 500th home Premiership goal. Tim Cahill headed the visitors back into the game with one of his five goals against us, also their hundredth League goal in an Anfield derby. Substitute Andy van der Meyde was sent off for elbowing Xabi Alonso just five minutes after coming on before Harry Kewell rounded off
  7. The knight departs 1969 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt was sold to Bolton Wanderers for £33,000, after ten years at Anfield. In that time, he had struck a then-record 286 times in 492 reds games, helping us to two League titles, the Second Division championship, our first FA Cup win in 1965 and an FA Charity Shield. He remains our record League goalscorer, with 245 strikes. He is also revered among older Wanderers’ fans after 25 goals in 84 games. From villain to hero 1991 - Michael Thomas signed from Arsenal for £1.5m. He spent nearly seven years at Anfield, playing 163 reds games, and scoring t

Happy birthday Jerzy 1973 - Jerzy Dudek was born in Rybnik. The big Pole in our goal made 186 reds appearances after signing from Feyenoord for £4.85m in August 2001, helping us to glory in Istanbul, as well as the Worthington Cup in 2003. He left to join Real Madrid in July 2007, although he barely featured for their first team. A new boss 1951 – Don Welsh took charge of his first reds game as Jack Haigh nabbed the only goal of our top-flight meeting with Charlton Athletic at Anfield. He had been officially appointed eighteen days earlier. Away goals galore 1985 - John Wark ne
