We always win in Wales 2003 - Goals from Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen handed us a 2-0 win over Manchester United as we won the Worthington Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium, to claim our seventh League Cup with Jerzy Dudek being named man of the match. John Arne Riise was playing in his hundredth reds game, while Milan Baroš suffered the rare indignity of coming on from the bench and then later himself being substituted. Happy birthdays 1994 - Lazar Marković was born in Čačak, Serbia. He signed from SL Benfica for £20m in July 2014, netting three times in 34 games before moving t

Cup final glory 1984 - Joe Fagan won his first trophy as reds boss as a Graeme Souness strike handed us the Milk Cup in a replay at Maine Road against Everton. 1902 - We also faced Everton with our friendly at Goodison ending goalless. In comes Cally 1960 - Ian Callaghan signed as a professional. He went on to make a record 857 reds appearances, netting 68 times as he helped us to five League titles, two FA Cups, one European Cup, two UEFA Cups, UEFA Super Cup and three FA Charity Shields. 1898 – Half-back Barney Battles re-signed from Dundee for £20, but only played once before j

Thumping the blues 1955 - Perhaps our most memorable game on this day came when we triumphed 4-0 at Goodison Park in the FA Cup Fourth Round, at a time when we were a division below the Blues, having been relegated the previous season. The goals came from Billy Liddell, Alan A’Court and a John Evans brace. Unfortunately, Huddersfield Town knocked us out at Anfield in the following round. 1944 - We also won there in a Wartime League fixture, with Berry Nieuwenhuys and Jack Balmer on target as we beat Everton 3-2, with Don Welsh netting from the spot. 1947 - We lost a top-flight encount

Striking legends arrive 1987 - John Aldridge signed from Oxford United for £750,000. He helped us to win the League title in 1988 and the FA Cup the following season, bagging 63 goals in 104 games before moving to Spain to join Real Sociedad for £1.1m in September 1989, becoming their first non-Basque player. 2006 - Robbie Fowler re-signed on a free transfer from Manchester City after three years with the Blues. He grabbed twelve goals in 39 outings in this second spell, but was released after two seasons, signing on with Cardiff City in July 2007. 1920 – Centre-forward Dick Johnson j

In comes Martin 2008 - Centre-back Martin Škrtel signed from Zenit St. Petersburg for £6.5m to become our most expensive defender to date. The tough Slovakian notched eighteen goals in 320 games in total, including one in our Carling Cup win at Wembley in February 2012, moving on to Fenerbahçe SK for £5.5m in July 2016. Unfortunately, he also put through his own net a joint club record eight times. On the same day, ex-red Nicolas Anelka joined Chelsea from Bolton Wanderers for £15m, netting 59 times in 185 appearances before signing for Shanghai Shenhua in December 2001. Happy birthday

Seventh heaven 2006 - We thumped Birmingham City 7-0 at St. Andrews in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup, our record away victory in the competition, and our biggest win to that date under Rafael Benítez. Sami Hyypiä put us in front in the first minute, with Peter Crouch soon also scoring with his head, to get on target in his third consecutive game. Crouch added a third just before the break, with substitute Fernando Morientes scoring on the hour. John Arne Riise belted in our fifth, with Olivier Tebily’s own goal and a shot from another sub, Djibril Cissé, completing the rout. Momo Sissoko mad

Shanks in charge 1959 - Bill Shankly took over as Manager, thirteen days after his appointment was announced. Words cannot fully explain his importance to the history of Liverpool Football Club, but his honours as reds boss included three League titles, two FA Cups, the UEFA Cup and the Second Division championship. A treble for Sir Roger 1964 - Roger Hunt scored a hat-trick as we thumped Burnley 5-1 in a top-flight meeting at Turf Moor. Geoff Strong and Chris Lawler both struck their first reds goals. Half a millennium for Stevie 2009 - Steven Gerrard played his 500th reds game as we held Blackburn Rovers to a goalless Premiership draw at Ewood Park. The closest we came was when David N’Gog rattled the crossbar. 1925 – Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers struck in the ninetieth minute as we held Blackburn Rovers to a 1-1 draw in a top-flight meeting at Ewood Park. The reds start out 1892 - We played our first ever competitive fixture, trouncing Higher Walton 8-0 in a Lancashire League fixture at Anfield, in front of a crowd of just 200. John Smith, Joe McQue and James Cameron all netted braces, with Malcolm McVean and John McBride also notching. West Derby-born Joe Pearson was the only non-Scot in this ‘Team of the Macs’. 1898 - We stepped out in red for the first time, as we beat The Wednesday 4-0 at Anfield, with centre-half Alex Raisbeck making his debut. We had played in blue and white quartered shirts until then. Left-half Bill Goldie bagged

Wembley derby joy 2012 - We came from behind to beat Everton 2-1 at Wembley in our FA Cup Semi-final with keeper Brad Jones becoming the first reds player to make his first four appearances for the club in four different competitions. Nikica Jelavić pounced on hesitation in the centre of our defence to give the Blues a half-time lead. However, Luis Suárez then capitalised on a short back-pass by Sylvain Distin, with Andy Carroll heading in a late winner to send us through to our fourteenth Final. On the way to our first European Cup 1977 - We drew closer to our first European Cup triumph. Having overcome Saint-Étienne in the previous round, we won our Semi-final first leg 3-1 at Zürich, with two goals from Phil Neal, including a spot-kick, and a Steve Heighway strike after we had gone behind to an early penalty from Peter Risi. Jordan’s ton up 2014 – Jordan Henderson reached a century of reds games as we won 2-1 at West Ham United. Steven Gerrard converted two spot kicks with ex-red Andy Carroll proving an awkward opponent. Guy Demel struck for the Hammers. Twice against
