Birth of a reds great 1919 - Bob Paisley was born in Hetton-le-Hole in County Durham. He made 277 reds appearances, netting twelve times and helping us to the League title in 1947 before joining the coaching staff in 1954. He took over as Manager twenty years later and remains the most successful English boss of all time, leading us to three European Cups, six League titles, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, four League Cups and five FA Charity Shields. Happy birthdays 1986 – Spanish left-back José Enrique was born in Valencia. He signed from Newcastle United for £5.5m in August 2011, notching twice in 99 reds appearances before being released in May 2016. He moved on to Real Zaragoza four months later. 1983 – Pepijn Lijnders was born in Broekhuizen in the Netherlands. He joined the reds as First-team Development Coach in 2014, leaving the club in January 2018 to take over as N.E.C. boss. However, he was sacked just four months later, returning to Melwood in June 2018 as Assistant Manager. 1883 – Keeper Peter Platt was born in Rishton. He signed from Blackburn Rovers in May 1902, playing 44 times before moving on to Luton Town in 1904. He sadly died aged just 39 in a mini-flu epidemic in Nuneaton in January 1922. Four for Harold 1932 - Centre-forward Harold Barton scored all four reds goals as we beat Chesterfield 4-2 at their Recreation Ground in a Fourth Round FA Cup tie. Unfortunately, we were knocked out by Chelsea in the Sixth Round that season. Beating the Blues 1937 - We won the Anfield derby 3-2 with Fred Howe, Phil Taylor and Jack Balmer on target, and Alex Stevenson bagging a brace for the Blues. Most recently 2022 – We won 3-1 at Crystal Palace with Virgil van Dijk and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on target before the break, with Fabinho converting a late spot kick. 2020 – We won 2-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, extending our lead at the top of the table to sixteen points with a game in hand. Jordan Henderson headed us in front early on, but Raúl Jiménez equalised after the break as we conceded our first League goal for more than twelve hours. Roberto Firmino struck the winner. Cup wins We have twice won FA Cup Fourth Round ties 3-0 on this day in history. 1971 - John Toshack, Ian St. John and Chris Lawler netted as we beat Swansea City at Anfield on our way to the Final. This was the Saint’s 425th and final game for the club. 1982 - We won at Sunderland with Kenny Dalglish grabbing a brace and Ian Rush also on the scoresheet. Unfortunately, we lost at Chelsea at the very next hurdle. Tons up 1954 – Centre-half Laurie Hughes played his 200th reds game as Tottenham Hotspur held us to a 2-2 top-flight draw at Anfield. Billy Liddell and John Evans scored with full-back Frank Lock putting through his own net and Sonny Walters nabbing the last of his four strikes past us. 1915 – We lost 2-1 to The Wednesday at Hillsborough with left-back Bob Pursell reaching a century of reds games. Fred Pagnam scored our goal, while David McLean struck one of his eight goals past us with Sam Kirkman bagging the last of his four. A crazy win 2016 – We won by the odd goal in nine at Norwich City, thanks to a stoppage-time Adam Lallana winner that led to a mass celebration on the touchline with boss Jürgen Klopp having his glasses broken. Roberto Firmino put us in front, but we found ourselves 3-1 down. We completed a turnaround to lead 4-3 thanks to goals from Jordan Henderson, a second from Firmino and James Milner. We were still ahead at the ninety-minute mark but Sébastien Bassong bagged a late leveller before the final dénouement. Off the mark 1904 – Forward John Carlin struck the first of his eight reds goals as we drew 2-2 at West Bromwich Albion, with half-back John ‘Geezer’ Hughes also on target with his second and last strike for the club. Carra going free 2006 - Jamie Carragher was awarded the Freedom of Sefton, an honour that thrilled the Bootle-born defender, which he won for his local charity work and the good example he sets young people. He became only the second person to be handed such an accolade. Other births and deaths 2013 – Right-winger Jimmy Payne died. He notched 43 times in 243 appearances for the reds, including the 1950 FA Cup Final, before moving across Stanley Park in April 1956, where he was dogged by injury before retiring to become a newsagent. 1911 – Inside-right Jock Smith committed suicide two days after the death of one of his children. He signed from Sunderland in May 1892, bagging five goals in eleven outings, moving on to The Wednesday in August 1893. 1907 – Scottish inside-forward Willie Walker died in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. He joined the reds from Leith Athletic in May 1897, netting three times in twelve reds games before he returned to his former club for free in August 1898. 1868 – Forward Fred Geary was born in Hyson Green, Nottingham. He signed from Everton for £60 in May 1895, having top scored as they won the League in 1891 and won three England caps. He bagged fourteen goals in 45 reds games, helping us to claim the Second Division title in his first season. 1904 - Left-half Jimmy McDougall was born in Port Glasgow. He signed from Partick Thistle in April 1928 and went on to be nominated into the club’s official Hall of Fame for the 1930’s, having struck twelve times in 356 games for the reds. He moved on to South Liverpool in May 1938 and later set up a successful chandlery business in Liverpool. 1961 – Former Academy Technical Manager Pep Segura was born in A Coruña, Spain. He joined the reds in June 2009 having led Olympiacos to the League and Cup double, moving on in September 2012. 1974 - One-time winger Bernard Diomède was born in Saint-Doulchard, France. He only made five first-team appearances after signing from Auxerre for £3m in June 2000. Stéph’s debut 1993 - Future red Stéphane Henchoz made his full international debut as Roy Hodgson’s Switzerland drew 1-1 with Japan B in a Carlsberg Cup game in Hong Kong, going on to win 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out. Bad boys 2006 - Abel Xavier was sacked by Middlesbrough after being found guilty of breaching UEFA’s anti-doping regulations. He served a ban and subsequently returned to the Riverside, playing 27 times for Boro in total. 2005 – Future red Daniel Agger was sent off for Denmark Under-21’s in an unofficial international against a Panama ‘A’ side, with the game ending 2-2. Four for Milan again 2003 - Milan Baroš scored four for the reserves as they trounced Bradford City 5-0 at the Deva Stadium in Chester. This was the second time that he had knocked four past the Bantams, following a similar performance the previous August. Dietmar Hamann made his comeback from injury in the same game. On the move 2021 – Midfielder Kevin Stewart signed for Blackpool, playing sixteen times in his first campaign with the Tangerines. 2020 – Victor Moses joined Internazionale on loan from Chelsea, failing to score in twenty games in Italy. 2019 – Ex-reds forward Mario Balotelli signed for Olympique de Marseille, scoring eight times in fifteen games for the French side. On the same day, full-back Ryan McLaughlin joined Rochdale from Blackpool, after eleven games for the Seasiders. Meanwhile, full-back Calum Woods joined Bradford City on a free transfer from Preston North End. 2018 – Forward David N’Gog signed for Ross County, netting once in ten outings. On the same day, left-winger Albert Riera announced his retirement from playing. 2017 – Winger Lazar Marković joined Hull City on loan, scoring twice in fourteen outings. 2009 - Emile Heskey joined Aston Villa from Wigan Athletic for £3.5m, after sixteen goals in 88 outings for the Latics. 2007 - Dominic Matteo joined Stoke City on a free transfer from Blackburn Rovers. He struck once in 25 outings for the Potters, often operating as a midfielder. 2003 - Charlie Adam signed for Rangers. He struck eighteen times in 86 games before moving to Blackpool in August 2009 for a club record £500,000, after several loan spells away from Ibrox. 2002 - Reserves defender Alan Navarro was sold to Tranmere Rovers for £225,000, playing 48 times before joining Accrington Stanley in September 2005. 1996 - Reserves forward Lee Jones re-joined Wrexham on loan. He struck nine times in 26 games while on loan at the Racecourse Ground. Reds skippers 2008 - Ex-red El-Hadji Diouf captained Senegal as they drew 2-2 with Tunisia in an Africa Cup of Nations group game in Ghana. 2006 – Diouf also featured as Senegal beat Zimbabwe 2-0 in a group game in Egypt. 2009 – Emiliano Insúa skippered Argentina as they beat Peru 2-1 in a Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventud de América” group game in Venezuela. 2013 – Oussama Assaidi featured for Morocco as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Cape Verde in their Africa Cup of Nations Finals group game in South Africa. 2015 – Ex-red Carl Medjani played for Algeria as they lost 1-0 to Ghana in another group game in Equatorial Guinea. Future red Sadio Mané also featured that day as Senegal drew 1-1 with South Africa. 2012 – Future red Assaidi played as Morocco lost 2-1 to Tunisia in Gabon. 2000 – Future red Fábio Aurélio played for Brazil as they beat Ecuador 2-0 in an Olympics qualifier. On the same day, Alberto Aquilani featured as Italy Under-15’s lost 3-1 to Brazil. 2016 – Future red Ozan Kabak played for Turkey Under-16’s in their 3-1 friendly defeat of the USA. Other reds games 1988 – Peter Beardsley and John Barnes scored as we beat Charlton Athletic 2-0 at Selhurst Park 1960 – We drew a Second Division fixture 3-3 at Middlesbrough, with Brian Clough nabbing two of his ten goals past us. Kenny Thomson put through his own net with Dave Hickson and Roger Hunt also on target to hand us a 3-1 half-time lead. Bill Harris equalised through a late spot-kick. 1926 – We beat Arsenal 3-0 at Anfield with Dick Forshaw netting twice and Cyril Oxley also scoring, while Elisha Scott saved an Alf Baker penalty. Forshaw’s second came with just fifteen seconds left, with the referee momentarily dazed so Tom Bromilow blew the final whistle! 1909 – Joe Hewitt and Ronald Orr struck as we won 2-0 at Bradford City. Bruno le père 2007 – Ex-reds midfielder Bruno Cheyrou and his wife Constance welcomed a son, Nino, in France. On the same day, Shane O’Connor played for the Irish Under-17’s, while future red Lucas captained Brazil as they beat Uruguay 3-1 in a Sudamericano Sub-20 "Juventud de América" game in Paraguay. -
Off the mark 2008 – Robbie Keane netted his first two League goals past ex-red Scott Carson as we beat West Bromwich Albion 3-0 at Anfield to hand Rafael Benítez his 150th win as reds boss in all competitions. The scoring was completed in injury time by Álvaro Arbeloa, who struck his second and final goal for the club. 1947 - Grimsby Town lost 3-1 at Anfield in a top-flight encounter with Kevin Baron notching his first reds goal, and Albert Stubbins and Bob Priday also on the scoresheet. Coady starts out 2012 – Midfielder Conor Coady made his reds bow as we lost 1-0 to the wealthy Anji Makhachkala in a UEFA Europa League group game in Moscow. Dani Pacheco came off the bench for his seventeenth and last appearance for the club, with centre-forward Adam Morgan playing for the third and final time. Lacina Traoré netted on the stroke of half time past Brad Jones. 2015 – We lost 2-1 at home to Crystal Palace as Steven Gerrard watched from the stands for the first time since leaving for LA Galaxy, with Philippe Coutinho equalising after Yannick Bolasie had given the Eagles the lead. Scott Dann headed in a late winner for the visitors, with boss Jürgen Klopp saying he felt “pretty alone” as the goal led to a mass crowd exodus. Hitting Spurs for four 1997 - Second-half goals from Steve McManaman, Øyvind Leonhardsen, Jamie Redknapp and substitute Michael Owen gave us a 4-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield, with the latter netting his first in L4. Robbie Fowler was playing his 200th reds game with Jason McAteer reaching a century of outings for the club, while beleaguered Spurs boss Gerry Francis was greeted with chants of “we want our Tottenham back”. 1952 - In fact, we have only lost one of our sixteen first-class games on this day over the years, 3-2 at Charlton Athletic. Our goals came from Bryan Williams and outside-left Ken Brierley, who were both on target for the last time. Billy Kiernan bagged the last two of his five goals against the reds, with future red John Evans netting one of his five goals past us. 1980 - Our goalless draw at home to Nottingham Forest was our fifth consecutive League stalemate that season. Happy birthdays 1981 - Joe Cole was born in Islington, London. He notched just five times in 42 reds outings after joining on a free transfer from Chelsea in July 2010, spending a season on loan at Lille OSC Métropole before returning to West Ham United for free in January 2013. He signed as a professional with the Hammers on his seventeenth birthday, on the Upton Park pitch prior to a game against Chelsea, with the stadium announcer somewhat excitedly saying, “you can tell your grandchildren you were here when Joe Cole signed”. 1999 – Left-back Adam Lewis was born in Liverpool. He made his senior bow in the FA Cup Fourth Round replay defeat of Shrewsbury Town at Anfield in February 2020, spending much of his time out on loan to date. 1918 – Forward John Shafto was born in Humshaugh. He signed from Hexham in November 1936, netting seven times in twenty outings before war intervened. Facing the Mancs 1975 - We saw off Manchester United 3-1 thanks to Steve Heighway’s fiftieth reds strike and goals from John Toshack and Kevin Keegan, with Steve Coppell netting for the visitors. The Anny Road end was separated by a metal divide for this game to give away fans their own section, following trouble at a previous match with United. One of the club’s senior directors said that their fans had achieved something Hitler’s bombers had failed to do – change Anfield. 2020 – Mohamed Salah put the reds in front from the spot as we drew 1-1 behind closed doors at Manchester City, with Gabriel Jesus equalising with one of his six goals past us before Kevin De Bruyne missed a penalty. Gordon’s century 1930 – Forward Gordon Hodgson scored his hundredth League goal for the reds in our 2-2 top-flight draw at Derby County. Archie McPherson also netted, with Harry Bedford bagging the last of his nine strikes past us and George Stephenson scoring one of his four. Tommy’s farewell 1971 - Reds keeper Tommy Lawrence moved over the water to join Tranmere Rovers. The ‘flying pig’ had kept goal on 390 occasions since signing on as a professional back in October 1957, helping us to claim two League titles, the FA Charity Shield and the club’s first ever FA Cup. New technology 2014 – Chelsea won 2-1 in L4 with Emre Can opening the scoring with a deflected strike that was his first goal for the club. Gary Cahill’s equaliser was the first goal to be given at Anfield using goal-line technology. Diego Costa bagged the second-half winner, although we were denied a strong late penalty claim for handball. Other Anfield wins We have also seen off Leyton Orient and Preston North End in L4 on this day over the years. 1924 - We beat the Lilywhites 3-1 thanks to a brace from Dick Forshaw and an Archie Rawlings strike, with keeper John Jones making the first of just four senior appearances and Forshaw scoring in the first of eight consecutive matches. Elisha Scott was forced to miss out due to injury after 132 consecutive senior appearances. 1958 - Orient were beaten 3-0 in a Second Division meeting with Geoff Twentyman, Louis Bimpson and Jimmy Melia on target, with Melia’s strike being the club’s 4,000th goal in all competitions in what was Phil Taylor’s hundredth League game in charge as keeper Tommy Younger also reached a century of reds outings. Zico the boss 1996 - Phil Neal was appointed Manager of First Division Manchester City. He was in charge for less than two months, leading them to just two wins in his ten games in charge, before being replaced by ex-Nottingham Forest boss Frank Clark. Moving towards another trophy 1983 - We were held to a 1-1 League Cup draw at Fulham. Ian Rush equalised shortly after Kevin Lock had put the home side ahead from the spot, and it took us until a second replay to finally reach the Fourth Round. Joy in the north east at last 1902 - We won at Newcastle United for the first time after six previously unsuccessful attempts. Sam Raybould and Arthur Goddard netted in a 2-1 victory. Top of the table 1986 - We climbed to the summit of the First Division for the first time that season when goals from Ian Rush, Steve Nicol and Craig Johnston secured a 3-1 victory at Queens Park Rangers as Nicol reached a century of League outings for the reds. Bells foiled 2006 - Struggling striker Craig Bellamy had a weak penalty saved as we won a League Cup Fourth Round tie at Birmingham City, with Daniel Agger grabbing the only goal of the game. Unfortunately, the night was marred by a shoulder injury suffered by Momo Sissoko. In comes Lauri 2007 – Sixteen-year old Finnish forward Lauri Dalla Valle signed from Joensuun Iloiset Peli-Pojat for a reported £600,000, going on to sign a professional contract with the reds in September 2008. He moved to Fulham in August 2010 after just one brief substitute appearance as part of the deal that brought left-back Paul Konchesky to Anfield. Future reds on the move 1983 - Future reds keeper Mike Hooper signed for his hometown club Bristol City on a free transfer from non-League Mangotsfield. He only made three first-team appearances in three seasons at Ashton Gate, moving on to Wrexham in July 1985. 1994 - Øyvind Leonhardsen joined Wimbledon from Rosenborg BK for £650,000. He had struck twenty times in 63 League games for the perpetual Norwegian champions, spending three successful seasons with Wimbledon before joining the reds. On the same day, David Thompson officially signed for the reds as a professional. Another title 2009 - Liverpool and Adrian Valles won the 2009 Superleague Formula motor racing championship at Jarama in Spain. Internationals on target 1961 - Ian St. John bagged a brace on his tenth full international appearance as Scotland beat Wales 2-0 at Hampden Park in the British International Championships. 2017 – Bobby Duncan came off the bench to score for England Under-17’s as they beat Portugal 3-2 in a friendly in Chesterfield, with Curtis Jones also featuring with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. 2018 – Future red Harvey Elliott struck his first goal for England Under-17’s in their 3-1 defeat of the Republic of Ireland in a friendly in Dublin, with his clubmate Fábio Carvalho skippering and Steve Cooper managing the side. 2013 – Trent Alexander-Arnold and Herbie Kane played for England Under-16’s as they lost a friendly 1-0 to Northern Ireland in Bournemouth. 2019 – Rigobert Song took charge of Cameroon Under-23’s as they drew 1-1 with Ghana in an Africa Cup of Nations group game in Cairo. Other birthdays 1917 - Left-back Barney Ramsden was born in Sheffield. He arrived on a free transfer from Sheffield Victoria in March 1935 and helped us to claim the first post-war League title in 1947, making a total of 63 first-team appearances without notching. He moved on to Sunderland in March 1948. 1963 - Former reds loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe was born in Washington in Tyne & Wear. He joined Southend United on a free transfer from Bradford City on his 36th birthday. He remained at Roots Hall for a year, making just six appearances before being released. Other reds games 1969 – Wolverhampton Wanderers held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. 1919 – Harry Chambers and Billy Lacey netted as we won 2-1 at Bradford Park Avenue. 1913 – Burnley held us to a 1-1 draw in L4. Bertie Freeman scored one of his nine goals against the reds with Lacey levelling. Signing on 2016 - Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kevin Stewart and Ben Woodburn all signed new contracts. Stewart left the club for Hull City for a reported £6m in July 2017 after twenty senior reds games. Alexander-Arnold has netted twelve times in 226 outings across his first six seasons, with Woodburn notching once in eleven first-team appearances as he became our youngest ever scorer aged seventeen years and 45 days, moving on to Preston North End in July 2022 Abel return 2006 - Abel Xavier re-signed for Middlesbrough. Happy birthdays 1974 - Stéphane Henchoz was born in Billens, Switzerland. He arrived for £3.5m from Blackburn Rovers in June 1999, and made a total of 205 appearances without scoring, forming a rock-solid partnership with Sami Hyypiä and helping us to claim five trophies in 2001 as well as another League Cup two years later. He joined Celtic on a free transfer in January 2005, and spent a season playing for Premiership new boys Wigan Athletic, before returning to Ewood Park for two injury-hit seasons. 1993 – Midfielder Kevin Stewart was born in Enfield. He arrived from Tottenham Hotspur in July 2014 on a free transfer, making twenty senior reds appearances without scoring before joining Hull City in July 2017. 1988 – Ex-reserves striker Craig Lindfield was born in Greasby on the Wirral peninsula. He struck in a pre-season friendly at Crewe Alexandra in July 2006 on his first appearance for the senior side, but failed to make a first-class appearance for the reds, and was released in August 2009. Trigger pulled 1995 - Birkenhead-born Jason McAteer signed from Bolton Wanderers for £4.5m, which was still their record transfer fee received until Nicolas Anelka’s £15m departure for Chelsea in January 2008, just five months after impressing against the reds in the Coca Cola Cup Final. He bagged six goals in his 139 reds games before joining Blackburn Rovers for £4m in January 1999. Four against the blues 1935 - Centre-forward Fred Howe scored four goals in our 6-0 triumph in the Anfield derby with Gordon Hodgson adding a brace. This remains the biggest ever winning margin by either side in the Merseyside derby. 1929 - Our other Anfield derby on this day ended in a 3-0 defeat. Dixie Dean bagged two of his nineteen derby goals with George Martin also on target. Red England 1977 - Six reds, plus the recently-departed Kevin Keegan, represented England in their goalless friendly draw with Switzerland at Wembley. This was England’s highest total from any one club since seven Arsenal players turned out against Italy in 1934, at Highbury. Terry McDermott made his debut alongside clubmates Ian Callaghan, Ray Clemence, skipper Emlyn Hughes, Ray Kennedy and Phil Neal. On the same day, Kenny Dalglish won his 48th Scottish cap, and his first as a reds player, as they beat East Germany 1-0 in a friendly in Berlin. King Billy starts out 1946 - We thumped Chelsea 7-4 at Anfield. Billy Liddell scored a brace on his official League debut, including one direct from a corner in the third minute as we raced into a 4-0 interval lead, with the lead eventually stretching to 6-0 before the west London outfit fought back. Bill Jones grabbed his first two reds goals with Willie Fagan also netting twice and Jack Balmer grabbing the other goal. Keeper Charlie Ashcroft also made his reds bow in this game, with Bob Paisley playing his first League game. Alex Machin bagged a brace for the visitors, with Len Goulden and Jimmy Argue also on target. 1963 - We also beat the Blues at Stamford Bridge, with Ian St. John nabbing a brace and Roger Hunt also on target in a 3-1 victory. Red trebles 1974 - Phil Boersma scored a first-half hat-trick in our 5-2 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur. Emlyn Hughes and Ray Kennedy were also on the scoresheet, with Martin Chivers netting the last of his seven goals against us, and Steve Perryman also scoring. This was Emlyn’s 300th League game for the reds. 1903 - Sydney Smith bagged a treble as we beat Manchester City 6-5 in a friendly at Anfield. Edgar Chadwick, Alex Raisbeck and Jack Cox also netted. 1921 - We also faced City, drawing 1-1 at their old Hyde Road ground, with Harry Chambers on target for the reds. Johnny signs on 1956 – Half-back Johnny Wheeler signed from Bolton Wanderers for £9,000, joining his cousin Ronnie Moran at Anfield. He made 177 appearances, bagging 23 goals. One of his greatest games came in November 1956, when he netted a four-minute hat-trick against Port Vale. He was appointed player-manager of New Brighton in May 1963, but did not take up the post, becoming Assistant Trainer at Bury instead, where he stayed until 1969. Red firsts and last 1996 - Patrik Berger made his reds bow as a substitute in our 2-1 defeat of Southampton on Graeme Souness’s first return to Anfield. Stan Collymore and Steve McManaman were on target either side of ex-red Jim Magilton’s equaliser. 2022 – Brazilian midfielder Arthur Melo came off the bench for his only reds appearance as we were beaten 4-1 at SSC Napoli in a UEFA Champions League group stage encounter. Piotr Zieliński scored from the spot before Alisson Becker saved a Victor Osimhen penalty. André-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Giovanni Simeone giving the home side a three-goal half-time lead, with Zieliński bagging his second straight after the break. Luis Díaz immediately pulled a goal back, but we still succumbed to our record defeat in the Champions League. 1985 – We beat Watford 3-1 at Anfield after falling behind to a Colin West goal. Phil Neal levelled from the spot before the break, his 59th and final reds goal, before Craig Johnston and Ian Rush secured the victory. More debutants 1895 – John McKenna took charge of the reds for the first time as left-back Tom Wilkie and forward Fred Geary both debuted in our season-opening 3-2 defeat of Notts County at Forest’s Town Ground, as Trent Bridge was being used for a cricket match. Jimmy Ross, Joe McQue and Harry Bradshaw struck for the reds. Wembley glory 1983 - We won our third consecutive League Cup, 2-1. Norman Whiteside opened the scoring for Manchester United with the first of his four goals past us before Alan Kennedy equalised at Wembley. The game went into extra time, with our fitness proving the greater as Frank Stapleton had to come back into defence with Gordon McQueen going up front, due to cramp. Ronnie Whelan, who had scored twice in the previous season’s Final, won the game for us with a beautifully curled shot past the helpless Gary Bailey. Bob Paisley was sent up to lift the trophy in his final season as boss. King Kenny’s centuries 1986 - Kenny Dalglish skippered Scotland while winning his hundredth cap in a 3-0 friendly defeat of Romania at Hampden Park. Alan Hansen and ex-red Graeme Souness both also played. On the same day, future red Mark Wright captained England as they beat the USSR 1-0 in a friendly in Tblisi. Fellow future red Peter Beardsley also played. Jan Mølby also turned out for his homeland that day, as Denmark held Northern Ireland to a 1-1 draw in another friendly, at Windsor Park. 1988 - Kenny secured another century when he led the reds to his hundredth victory as Manager, with John Aldridge and John Barnes striking in a 2-1 League defeat of Wimbledon at Anfield. We went on to win 3-2, with Jérémie Aliadière sent off for the visitors for slapping Javier Mascherano. This meant we became the first team ever to score hat-tricks in all of the League, FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League in the same season. Tuncay Şanlı and future red Stewart Downing netted for the visitors. Daniel again 2014 - Daniel Sturridge scored in his seventh consecutive League game as we eventually beat Swansea City 4-3 at Anfield. He put us in front inside three minutes, with Jordan Henderson extending our lead before ex-red Jonjo Shelvey scored a spectacular goal and Martin Škrtel put through his own net to level the scores. Sturridge headed in his second before Wilfred Bony equalised from the spot. Henderson then grabbed the winner. Luis again 2013 - Luis Suárez scored in his third consecutive game as we drew 2-2 at Arsenal. He opened the scoring early on, with Jordan Henderson giving us a two-goal lead after an hour. Births and deaths 1992 – Former reserves midfielder Tom Ince was born in Stockport. He made just one senior reds appearance, as a substitute in our humiliating Carling Cup defeat by Northampton Town, moving on to Blackpool in August 2011. 1911 – Forward Jimmy Collins was born in London. He signed from Walsall in January 1936, failing to score in seven reds games before joining Cardiff City the following May, for whom he bagged forty goals in 75 League outings. 1917 - William Barclay died. The former Secretary and Vice-Chairman of Everton was the reds’ Secretary for the first three years of the club’s existence, but the team was picked by the Board, in which time we claimed the Lancashire League and Second Division titles. 1974 – Centre-forward Danny Shone died. He signed from local amateur side Grayson’s of Garston in May 1921, netting 26 goals in 81 games as he helped us to claim the League title in his first season. He moved on to West Ham United in June 1928. Heading off 1951 – George Kay stepped down as Manager due to illness, and sadly died just three years later. He had led us to our first League title in 24 years in 1946, and the FA Cup Final four years later as we won just 142 of his 357 games in charge. Amongst the players who joined the club during his tenure were the great Billy Liddell and Bob Paisley. 1930 – Scottish outside-left John Lindsay left the reds to join Swansea Town. He had struck three times in sixteen outings since signing from Rhyl Athletic in April 1928. On the same day, defender Bill Murray moved on to Third Division North side Barrow, becoming their captain. He had signed from Clydebank in November 1927, netting once in four senior outings. Only strike 1897 – Half-back Tom Cleghorn bagged his only reds goal in our 4-3 defeat of Burton Swifts in an FA Cup First Round tie at Anfield. He only lasted a little over two months in Spain before sensationally quitting the game. 2003 - Robbie Fowler was sold to Manchester City from Leeds United for £6m, after just fourteen months at Elland Road, in which time he had netted fourteen times in 33 games. 2007 - Sean Dundee signed for Stuttgarter Kickers from Kickers Offenbach. He netted once in five League games before returning to South Africa to sign for AmaZulu. 2009 - El-Hadji Diouf joined Blackburn Rovers from Sunderland for £2.5m, after failing to score in sixteen games for the Black Cats. 2014 – Steven Gillespie was released by Fleetwood Town after four goals in 25 games. He joined from Ajax in the summer of 2018, signing his first professional contract in July 2019. Emile Heskey’s first-half header was the highlight of a barnstorming performance. Most recently 2014 - We came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Aston Villa at Anfield. Andreas Weimann scored before future red Christian Benteke grabbed one of his seven goals against us to date, with Daniel Sturridge pulling a goal back in first-half stoppage time. He left the club in the summer of 2009. 1947 - Former reserves forward Ted MacDougall was born in Inverness. He signed pro terms on his nineteenth birthday in 1966 but never made our first-team, moving on to York City for £5,000 in 1967. He enjoyed his greatest success with Norwich City, for whom he banged in 66 goals in 138 games. 1949 – Forward Steve Peplow was born in Liverpool. He signed on at Anfield as a professional on his seventeenth birthday and struck nineteen goals for the reserves in 1968/69, but only played three senior games, without finding the back of the net. He left for Swindon Town in June 1971 after a successful loan spell there. 1991 – Former Academy forward Marvin Pourié was born in Werne in Germany. He arrived from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2007 at the age of sixteen, scoring twelve times in his first year with the Under-18’s but returned to Germany in January 2009, joining Schalke 04. 1999 – Polish keeper Kamil Grabara was born in Ruda Śląska. He arrived in the summer of 2016 from Ruch Chorzów, making it to the first-team bench once before moving on to F.C. København in July 2021. 1884 - Robert Blanthorne was born in Birkenhead. He only played twice for the first team, at the end of the 1906/07 season after signing from Birkenhead in the second half of the campaign. 1932 - Left-back Tom Wilkie died. He struck once in 64 reds appearances after signing from Heart Of Midlothian in January 1895, moving on to Portsmouth in 1899. 1869 - James Kelso was born in Cardross. He only played one senior reds game, in a 4-0 Lancashire League defeat of Bury at Anfield in September 1892, and sadly committed suicide aged just 29, back in his native Scotland. Stewart’s treble 1910 – Inside-right Jimmy Stewart scored a hat-trick as we thumped Chelsea 5-1 at Anfield. Jack Parkinson added a brace. Debutants galore 2016 – Winger Ryan Kent and left-back Joe Maguire played their only senior reds games, with centre-half Tiago Ilori, winger Sheyi Ojo and midfielder Kevin Stewart also debuting as a very inexperienced side drew 2-2 at League Two side Exeter City in the FA Cup Third Round as Christian Benteke skippered the side for the only time. We twice fell behind, but the only reds goals from forward Jerome Sinclair and left-back Brad Smith drew us level each time. Most recently 2021 – We won an FA Cup Third Round tie 4-1 behind closed doors at a COVID-struck Aston Villa. Sadio Mané bagged a brace with Gini Wijnaldum and Mohamed Salah both also on target. On the same day, ex-red Gary Mackay-Steven signed for Heart Of Midlothian, netting four times in eighteen appearances in his first campaign back in Scotland. Red departures 1955 – Forward Fred Geary died. He signed from Everton for £60 in May 1895, having top scored as they won the League in 1891 and won three England caps. He bagged fourteen goals in 45 reds games, helping us to claim the Second Division title in his first season. 2010 - Andrea Dossena joined SSC Napoli for €4.25m. He had struck twice in 31 reds games after signing from Udinese for £7m in July 2008. On the same day, centre-half Zak Whitbread left Millwall for Norwich City after four goals in 119 games for the Lions. 2020 – Young midfielder Isaac Christie-Davies joined Cercle Brugge Koninklijke Sportvereniging on loan, having played just one senior reds game. He netted on his debut in a friendly, but failed to make a senior appearance, moving on permanently to Barnsley in September 2020. Stumbling towards Cardiff 2003 - Two late Michael Tonge strikes gave Sheffield United the first leg advantage in our Worthington Cup Semi-final at Bramall Lane, after Neil Mellor’s first senior goal had opened the scoring. We, of course, turned things around in the second leg, to progress to our ninth League Cup Final. More managerial ins and outs 1997 - Kevin Keegan resigned as Manager of Newcastle United for the first time. He had been in charge for nearly five years, guiding them to the First Division title in his first full season in charge, and then to within a whisker of the Premiership in 1996. 2001 - Nigel Spackman was appointed First Division Barnsley’s boss. He was in charge for nine months before being sacked. 2009 - Nigel Clough took over as Manager of Derby County, as a replacement for Paul Jewell. He remained in charge until being sacked in September 2013. Bill’s century 1949 – Bill Jones played his hundredth reds game, putting through his own net as we drew an FA Cup third Round tie 2-2 at Nottingham Forest. We were two goals behind at half time, but Willie Fagan and Bob Paisley both struck late on, before the match headed into extra time. The Shrimpers again 1958 - Right-back John Molyneux struck his first reds goal as we beat Southend United 3-2 in an FA Cup Third Round replay, as well as putting through his own net. Centre-half Dick White scored his only reds goal, with Tony Rowley netting his 38th and last goal for the club. Sammy McCrory bagged the other goal for the Shrimpers. We made it to the Sixth Round that season before falling to Blackburn Rovers. The lights go out in Bristol 1994 - Our FA Cup Third Round match at Bristol City was called off during the second half, due to floodlight failure. We were eventually knocked out by the First Division side in an Anfield replay. Mixed fortunes against Rovers We have faced Blackburn Rovers three times on this day in history, winning twice in the FA Cup. 1898 - However, we lost the first meeting 2-1, when our strike came from a William Ball own goal in a First Division match at Ewood Park. Forward Bobby Colvin made the first of his three reds appearances in this game. 1983 - We won away from home by the same score in the Third Round, with David Hodgson and Ian Rush on target. Unfortunately, we only reached the Fifth Round, going out at home to Brighton & Hove Albion. 1991 - Ray Houghton, Ian Rush and Steve Staunton were on the scoresheet as we won a Third Round replay 3-0 at Anfield. Steve McMahon was sent off in this game, as Glenn Hysén had been in the drawn first meeting. We went as far as the Fifth Round again that year before being knocked out by Everton. Evans on target and off 1955 - We drew 1-1 at Lincoln City in an FA Cup Third Round tie, with goalscorer John Evans sent off. We won the replay four days later, after extra time, as we made it to the Fifth Round before being knocked out by Huddersfield Town at Anfield. No goals against Palace We have twice faced Crystal Palace in the FA Cup Third Round on this day in history, with both matches ending goalless. 1938 – We were held at Selhurst Park in our first ever meeting with the Eagles, making it as far as the Fifth Round when we were knocked out by Huddersfield Town. 1977 – We drew in L4 when Ray Clemence made his 400th appearance for the reds. We of course reached the Final that year. On our way to Wembley 1974 - We won an FA Cup Third Round replay 2-0 at Doncaster Rovers in a game that kicked off at 1:30pm on a Tuesday, due to the three-day working week, having only just survived the first game at Anfield. Steve Heighway and Peter Cormack netted as we set off towards our second Cup triumph. Mo the best 2019 - Mohamed Salah was named as CAF African Footballer of the Year for the second consecutive year after a calendar year in which he had netted in the UEFA Champions League Final, amongst his 24 goals in 51 reds games. Naby Keïta and Sadio Mané were also named in the Team of the Year. Jermaine the record breaker 1999 - Jermaine Pennant signed for the Gunners from Notts County in a £2m deal, becoming the most expensive teenager in English football history, aged just sixteen. He only grabbed three goals for Arsenal, but they all came in his first League start as he made just 26 senior appearances, although he only played one other League game from the off. Other reds games 1972 – We lost 1-0 at Leicester City with Ally Brown heading in very early. 1966 – Ron Yeats scored a diving header, the only goal of our trip to Highbury against Arsenal. 1921 – We were held to a 1-1 draw by Manchester United in an FA Cup First Round tie at Anfield. We won the replay, but were knocked out in the next round by Newcastle United. Ex-red Tom Miller opened the scoring, but Harry Chambers nabbed our equaliser. A new contract 2007 - Young midfielder Danny Guthrie signed a new contract until June 2009. He played just seven senior reds games before being sold to Newcastle United for £2.25m in July 2008. A final cap 1995 - Rigobert Song won his eighth and final cap as a Tonnerre Yaoundé player as Cameroon were held to a goalless draw by Malawi in Douala. 2013 – Oussama Assaidi played for Morocco as they held Zambia to a goalless draw in a friendly in Johannesburg. 2017 – Future red Mohamed Salah featured in Egypt’s 1-0 friendly defeat of Tunisia in Cairo. -
Club record signing 2018 – Dutch centre-half Virgil van Dijk signed from Southampton for a club record £75m. He struck nineteen times in 222 reds games across his first six seasons, helping us to keep 96 clean sheets while claiming the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield. On the same day, Estonian centre-half Ragnar Klavan headed in his second and last goal for the club to secure a last-minute 2-1 victory at Burnley. Sadio Mané opened the scoring after an hour before Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson equalised late on. 2020 – Japanese forward Takumi Minamino signed from Red Bull Salzburg for £7.25m. He went on to score fourteen goals in 55 outings, helping us to claim the Premier League title before moving on to AS Monaco for an initial €15m in June 2022. RIP Gary 2012 - Gary Ablett died, aged just 46. He signed on at Anfield as a professional in November 1983, going on to make 147 reds appearances, scoring just once – in only his second game. He helped us to two League titles, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before being sold to Everton by Graeme Souness for £750,000 in January 1992, with whom he won a second FA Cup. He returned to the club in the summer of 2006 to take over as Reserve Team Manager, leading them to the national title in his second season, although he left at the end of the following campaign. 1992 - Ablett played his 147th and final reds game as goals from Ray Houghton and Dean Saunders resulted in a 2-1 League defeat of Sheffield United at Anfield, after Brian Deane had struck one of his eight goals against the reds. 1977 – Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson died. He struck twice in 224 games for the reds after signing from Aberdeen for £1,750 in May 1925, appearing in every outfield position, and was renowned for his on-field arguments with notoriously foul-mouthed keeper Elisha Scott! He became reds skipper in 1928, also writing a regular column for the Liverpool Weekly Post before leaving the reds in 1933 to become ordained as a Presbyterian minister. 1917 – Scottish ex-reds keeper Don Sloan died in First World War action. He signed from Everton for £300 in May 1908, failing to keep a clean sheet in six reds games before becoming Player/Manager of his old club Distillery in Belfast in July 1909. Rushie’s hat-trick 1983 - Ian Rush bagged a treble as we beat Notts County 5-1 at Anfield, with his second being his fiftieth reds strike. Kenny Dalglish netted a brace as Phil Neal missed a penalty. John Fashanu struck the first of his six goals past us. 1994 - Rushie was on target as we won 2-1 at Ipswich Town, completing his record of scoring for us in each of the six New Year’s Day matches in which he played. Neil Ruddock nabbed the other goal to complete our first away League win since August. Happy birthdays 1993 - Right-back Jon Flanagan was born in Liverpool. He struck once in 51 senior reds games since making his debut in a 3-0 home victory over Manchester City in April 2011. He joined Rangers in June 2018 after being released by the reds earlier that month. 1955 – Chief Executive Officer Peter Moore was born in Liverpool, taking on the role in June 2017, moving on in August 2020. 2001 – Left-back Yasser Larouci was born in El Oued in Algeria. He arrived from Le Havre in July 2017 as a winger, playing two senior reds games before joining Troyes in July 2021. On the same day, midfielder Elijah Dixon-Bonner was born in Harlow. He debuted in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay against Shrewsbury Town in February 2020, so far making just two senior appearances. More red trebles galore 1909 - Joe Hewitt bagged a treble against his former club as we won 4-1 at Sunderland with Arthur Goddard also scoring. Billy Hogg struck one of his five goals against the reds, with Sam Hardy also saving one of his spot-kicks. We have also twice beaten the Wearsiders 2-0 on New Year’s Day. 1949 - Billy Liddell converted from the spot at Roker Park to add to a Fred Hall own goal as right-half Phil Taylor made his 200th appearance. 1977 - Ray Kennedy and Phil Thompson both headed in goals at Anfield as Emlyn Hughes played his 400th League game for the reds. On the same day, Glenn Hysén played for Sweden Under-18’s in their 2-1 friendly defeat by Romania in Israel. 1910 - Jack Parkinson scored three, including a penalty, as we thumped Woolwich Arsenal 5-1 at Anfield, with Sam Bowyer adding a brace. Leadbetter, Matt Busby and Len Carney also on target that day. 1917 - Thomas Bennett bagged a treble as we beat Leeds City 4-0 in a testimonial for Mrs. Cameron at Elland Road, with Harry Lewis grabbing the other goal. Debuting between the sticks 1913 - Elisha Scott became our youngest ever goalkeeper at just eighteen years 131 days, keeping a clean sheet as we emerged from Newcastle United with honours even. 1896 - Harry Storer made his reds bow as we beat Manchester City 3-1 at Anfield. Jimmy Ross bagged a brace, with Malcolm McVean also on target. Luis up to a score scores 2014 - Luis Suárez became the quickest player ever to reach twenty Premier League goals in a season, taking just fifteen games to do so as he converted a second-half free-kick. We beat Hull City 2-0 at Anfield with Daniel Agger heading in from a corner before the break. Other debuts 1927 - Right-back Bob Done and left-winger George Pither both debuted as we lost 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers, with Dick Edmed nabbing our consolation and Fred Baron playing his twentieth and final reds game. John Smith netted two of his seven goals against the reds. 1920 - Right-half Jock McNab made his reds bow as Manchester United held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. We have faced the Mancs on two further occasions on New Year’s Day 1966 – We won 2-1 at Anfield with Tommy Smith and Gordon Milne netting, after Denis Law had given the visitors an early lead with one of his six strikes past us. 1989 - John Barnes struck our consolation as we lost 3-1 at Old Trafford. Mark Hughes bagged one of his nine strikes past us, with Brian McClair and Russell Beardsmore also on target. Twice against the Foxes 2015 – Steven Gerrard converted two first-half penalties, with the first wrongly awarded and the second being the reds’ hundredth successful conversion in the Premier League, as we became the first club to reach this milestone. However, David Nugent and Jeff Schlupp both struck after the break as the game ended 2-2. 1974 – We were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Leicester City. Peter Cormack struck with Keith Weller nabbing one of his six goals past us, while Kevin Keegan reached a century of League games for the reds. Up against the Trotters 2011 – We secured a last-minute 2-1 victory over Bolton Wanderers in front of 35,400, the lowest League attendance at Anfield since Portsmouth visited on a Tuesday evening in December 2004. Kevin Davies headed the visitors in front with the last of his four goals against us, but Fernando Torres equalised early in the second half, with Joe Cole grabbing a dramatic late winner. 2007 - We won 3-0 at Anfield, thanks to a fantastic scissor-kick volley from Peter Crouch and strikes from Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt, with all the goals coming in the second half. Dirk’s goal was our 900th in the Premier League. We have faced Bolton on three more occasions on this day in history. 1897 – We won 4-1 at Burnden Park with George Allan bagging a brace and John McCartney and Fred Geary also on target. 1907 - We lost 3-0 at Burnden Park. 2002 - We were held to a draw at Anfield with scouser Kevin Nolan cancelling out Steven Gerrard’s opener, which was our 150th goal in League encounters with Bolton. Up against the Blues We have entertained Chelsea three times on this day in history. 2005 - They completed their second League double over the reds, and first since 1919, when another deflected Joe Cole goal handed them victory at Anfield. 1924 - Danny Shone, Jimmy Walsh and Joe Keetley struck as we won 3-1. This was Keetley’s second and final reds goal. 1938 - John Shafto and Willie Fagan netted as we drew 2-2. Harry Burgess struck one of his nine goals against the reds, with Wilf Chitty also scoring. 1997 - We also visited Stamford Bridge, with Roberto Di Matteo grabbing the only goal of the game. In white 1906 - We beat Stoke 3-1 at Anfield, having to start the match with just ten men as left-back Billy Dunlop arrived late. The team played in white as the visitors had turned up in red jerseys. Not a ‘sir’ just yet 2000 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt was finally awarded an MBE for his services in the 1966 World Cup, one of the final five World Cup winners to receive this honour. 1983 - Ex-reds centre-forward John Toshack received the same honour. 1975 – Reds legend Ian Callaghan was also awarded an MBE. Double treble trouble 1934 - Jimmy Richardson and Sam Weaver both scored hat-tricks for Newcastle United as they thumped us 9-2 at St. James’ Park. The score was 2-2 at half-time, with Harold Taylor netting for the reds, to add to an Alec Betton own goal. Tommy Lang struck the last of his four goals past us, with Jimmy Boyd and Ron Williams also scoring for the home side. 2003 - A Laurent Robert free-kick deflected off Milan Baroš past Chris Kirkland as the Geordies won 1-0 on a sodden pitch. Salif Diao was sent off shortly after an hour for a wild challenge, while Grégory Vignal made his twentieth and final reds appearance as a late substitute. A rare defeat 1972 - Leeds United beat us 2-0, one of just eleven home League defeats we suffered during the whole of the 1970’s. Allan Clarke and Mick Jones each bagged one of their seven strikes past us. Other birthdays 1955 - Assistant Chief Scout Mike McGlynn was born in Liverpool. He was a senior coach with the FA for 20 years before becoming northern scout for West Ham United. He was initially in a part-time role for the reds before joining full time in 2007. 1881 – Welsh international half-back George Latham was born in Newtown. He joined the reds as an amateur in December 1902, signing on professionally the following year. He played nineteen reds games without scoring before joining Southport Central in 1909. Mølby foiled 1986 - Ian Rush ended a barren spell of eight games without a goal to draw us level at Sheffield Wednesday, before Martin Hodge saved a Jan Mølby spot-kick. Paul Walsh scored with his first touch from off the bench, but we were eventually held 2-2. Beating the Blues We have twice won wartime derby matches on this day in history. 1918 - Forward Thomas Bennett scored in his third consecutive game as we won 4-1 at Anfield, with Harry Lewis netting a brace and Jack Waine also on target. 1919 - We won 2-1 at Goodison Park thanks to goals from Harry Lewis and Arthur Metcalf. In and out 1949 – Half-back Jack Heydon signed on a free transfer from Everton, playing 67 times before moving to Millwall in May 1953. 2006 - John Welsh signed for Hull City in a swap deal for winger Paul Anderson. Welsh had played ten senior games for the reds, while Anderson made it onto the first-team bench just twice, both in Champions League matches. He signed for League One Nottingham Forest in June 2009, having spent the previous campaign on loan with them. 2011 – Reserves keeper Charles Itandje officially signed for Greek Super League side P.A.E. A.P.S. Atromitos Athens after dramatically falling out of favour at Anfield. 2013 – Ex-reserves forward Jon Newby was sacked as Manager of Colwyn Bay, having been in charge since November 2011. 2014 - Djibril Cissé signed for Bastia, scoring twice in eleven outings during the rest of his first campaign in Corsica. 2015 – Forward Jack Dunn, centre-half Lloyd Jones and midfielder Kevin Stewart all joined Cheltenham Town on loan, making a total of fifteen appearances between them. Red farewells 2008 - Club Secretary Sheila Walsh died of cancer. Those who paid tribute to her included boss Rafael Benítez, who said, “Sheila worked as a Secretary to seven different managers at Liverpool Football Club during her 26 years with us. I was privileged to work with her during these last four years. During my time as the manager here I found Sheila to be professional, committed, warm, friendly and above all courageous in the face of her suffering.” 2023 – Scottish forward Frank McGarvey died from cancer. He arrived from Celtic for £300,000 in May 1979 after bagging 113 goals in 245 League games for the Hoops. However, he never broke into the first team at Anfield, moving back to Celtic for £270,000 in March 1980, becoming Scotland’s most expensive footballer. 1901 – Romany right-half Rab Howell played his 67th and last reds game in our 3-1 home victory over Stoke. Jack Cox, Andy McGuigan and right-back Tom Robertson all netted, with Robertson also missing a penalty as winger Tommy Robertson reached a century of reds games. 1912 – We beat Bradford City 1-0 at Anfield thanks to a goal from Harold Uren, his second and last for the club. 1914 – The Bantams won 1-0 in L4 thanks to one of Dickie Bond’s four goals against the reds. 1898 - Right-half John McCartney struck his seventh and final goal for the club as West Bromwich Albion held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield, with centre-half Joe McQue reaching a century of League games for the reds as inside-forward Willie Walker appeared for the twelfth and last time. 1903 – The Baggies won 2-0 in L4 with George Dorsett netting the first of his five goals past us, and Billy Lee also scoring. 1895 – We beat Albion 4-0 at home, with all the goals coming in the second half. Harry Bradshaw struck twice before Jimmy Ross and Davy Hannah scored late on. Forest four times 1996 – We beat Nottingham Forest 4-2 in a Premiership encounter at Anfield with Steve Stone and Ian Woan giving the visitors an early two-goal lead. A Robbie Fowler headed brace drew us level before half-time, with Stan Collymore putting us in front before Colin Cooper put through his own net. 1990 – We were held to a 2-2 draw at the City Ground, despite Ian Rush netting twice to hand us a two-goal half-time lead. Steve Hodge nodded in one of his six goals against us after the break, before future red Nigel Clough converted a penalty. Steve McMahon played his 200th game for the reds. 1987 – We drew 1-1 at Forest with youngster Phil Starbuck opening the scoring. Ian Rush bagged a late leveller. 1908 – We shared a goalless draw in L4. John Aldridge and Ray Houghton also got on the scoresheet past ex-red Steve Ogrizovic to send us thirteen points clear at the top of the table. 1985 – We were held to a 1-1 draw at Watford. Luther Blissett scored a first-half penalty, but Ian Rush headed in a late leveller. 1955 – We beat Derby County 2-0 in a home Second Division encounter, with Brian Jackson and Billy Liddell scoring. 1948 – Charlton Athletic won 3-2 at Anfield. Ray Minshull put through his own net before Charlie Vaughan handed the Addicks a two-goal half-time lead with the first of his four strikes against us. Bill Robinson extended their lead further, before Albert Stubbins reduced the arrears with a late brace. 1935 – We lost 2-0 at Middlesbrough, with Tim Coleman netting two of his nine goals past us. 1926 – Aston Villa lost 3-1 at Anfield as Dick Forshaw netted twice with Cyril Oxley also scoring before the break. Len Capewell then scored a consolation with one of his of his six goals against us. 1921 – We won 2-0 at Villa Park thanks to first-half goals from Dick Johnson and Harry Chambers. Uncle Joe’s debut 1946 - Joe Fagan made his debut for Manchester City in a 4-0 defeat of Fulham at Maine Road. He made 168 appearances for them over the next four years, skippering the side for the last three seasons. -
Crossing the Pennines 2017 – Left-back Andy Robertson signed from Hull City for an initial £8m, scoring eight goals in 267 outings across his first six seasons as he has so far helped us to claim the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield. On the same day, midfielder Kevin Stewart made the reverse journey for a reported £6m, having made twenty senior appearances for the reds since arriving in July 2014 after his contract with Tottenham Hotspur expired. Happy birthday Mike 1969 - Mike Marsh was born in Kirkby. He bagged six goals in 101 reds games before being part of the deal that brought Julian Dicks to Anfield from West Ham United in September 1993. He left Melwood in June 2015, having risen to First Team Coach after progressing rapidly through the Academy coaching ranks. Welcome Vedgy 1998 - Vegard Heggem arrived from Rosenborg BK for £3.5m, the only signing made by the joint management team of Roy Evans and Gérard Houllier. His five years at Anfield were ravaged by hamstring injuries, and he could only make 65 appearances, scoring three times. 2010 – Joe Cole signed on a free transfer from Chelsea. Other birthdays 1979 - Andriy Voronin was born in Odessa. The Ukrainian forward arrived from Bayer 04 Leverkusen on a free transfer in July 2007 and bagged six goals in 28 outings in his first season, before being loaned out to Hertha BSC Berlin, whom he helped to a fourth-placed finish in the Bundesliga, netting eleven times in 26 games. He then returned to Anfield where he failed to score in another twelve games before being sold to Dinamo Moskva in January 2010 for £1.8m. 1961 – Former reserves midfielder Mick Halsall was born in Bootle. He left Anfield in 1983 after six years as a professional to forge a successful career with Birmingham City, Carlisle United and Peterborough United. He is now head of Academy coaching for West Bromwich Albion. Signing on 2010 - Young centre-back Danny Wilson signed from Rangers for an initial £2m fee. He made nine first-team reds appearances, as well as breaking into the senior Scotland side in his first season. However, he moved on to Heart Of Midlothian in May 2013 after a series of loan spells away from Anfield. 2021 – Ethiopian-born, German international midfielder Melkamu Frauendorf signed as a professional with the reds, making his senior bow from the bench in an FA Cup defeat of Shrewsbury Town in January 2022, so far making two first-team appearances. Lonergan’s lone outing 2019 – Keeper Andy Lonergan made his only first-team appearance, playing the first half of our 2-1 defeat by Sevilla in Boston, with the Spaniards having Joris Gnagnon dismissed for a horror tackle on Yasser Larouci. Nolito opened the scoring with Divock Origi equalising before the break. However, Alejandro Pozo struck a late winner. Roy’s stalemate start 2010 – Roy Hodgson took charge of the reds for the first time as we were held to a goalless draw at Grasshopper-Club Zürich. Forwards David Amoo and Lauri Dalla Valle, midfielders Tom Ince, Victor Pálsson and Jonjo Shelvey and centre-back Steven Irwin all made their first senior appearances for the club. Justice denied 2000 - Former South Yorkshire Police Superintendent Bernard Murray was cleared of manslaughter at Leeds Crown Court over his part in the Hillsborough disaster. The jury took longer to come to a conclusion on former Chief Superintendent David Duckenfield, although he was also eventually not convicted. Striking out 2007 - Robbie Fowler signed for Cardiff City, after twelve strikes in 39 games in his second reds spell. He netted six times in just sixteen outings in a season that was once again hampered by injury. 2014 – Iago Aspas joined Sevilla on loan after netting just once in fifteen reds games since arriving from Real Club Celta de Vigo for £7.7m in June 2013. He returned to his former club two years later for €5m. Reds farewells 2006 - Former keeper Bert Slater died in Brechin. He arrived from Falkirk in swap deal for Tommy Younger in June 1959 and played 111 times, winning a Second Division title medal in 1962, before returning to Scotland to join Dundee that July. 2021 – Scottish left-half Tommy Leishman died. He had won the Scottish Cup with St. Mirren, signing for £10,000 in November 1949. He helped us back to the First Division in 1962, although he then only made eleven top-flight appearances before returning north of the border, to Hibernian, in January 1963 after a total of seven goals in 118 reds games, including our first ever League Cup strike. Bowyer deal off 2002 - Liverpool pulled out of the controversial deal to bring Lee Bowyer to Anfield. A club spokesman said, “Liverpool Football Club have decided not to go ahead with the proposed transfer of Lee Bowyer for a variety of reasons. Manager Gérard Houllier was not convinced the player had either the hunger or desire to play for the club, qualities which are essential for any Liverpool player.” Reds in action 2007 - A Liverpool XI played in a testimonial match for Peterborough United’s long-serving keeper Mark Tyler at London Road. Martin Hansen saved a penalty as the game ended goalless. Dioufy on target 2001 - El-Hadji Diouf netted in Senegal’s 5-0 thumping of Namibia in a World Cup qualifier in Windhoek. Fellow future red Salif Diao also played. Youngsters on the mark 2010 – Dani Pacheco nabbed a brace as Spain Under-19’s beat Portugal 2-1 in a European Championship Finals group fixture in France, with future red Thiago Alcântara also in action. Meanwhile, Chris Mavinga played as France thumped Austria 5-0 and future reds Steven Caulker and Nathaniel Clyne both featured in England’s 1-0 defeat by the Netherlands in the same competition, with future red Fabio Borini playing for Italy in their goalless draw with Croatia. 2000 - Future red Milan Baroš was on the scoresheet as the Czech Republic Under-18’s beat their Finnish counterparts 3-2 in a European Championship Finals group game in Germany. His future clubmate Daniel Sjölund was on the losing side. 2002 - Fernando Torres featured as Spain Under-19’s drew 1-1 with the Czech Republic in a group encounter in Norway. Babb steps up 1992 - Phil Babb joined Coventry City from Bradford City for £500,000. He had played as a midfielder at Valley Parade, scoring fourteen times in 93 appearances. He looked an accomplished centre-back at Highfield Road, grabbing four goals in 84 appearances before arriving at Anfield. Knocked out 2007 - Harry Kewell came off the bench as Australia were held to a 1-1 draw by Japan in the Quarter-final of the AFC Asian Cup in Vietnam. Extra time brought no further goals, with Japan eventually winning 4-3 on penalties. Meanwhile, future red Mikel San José featured as Spain Under-19’s were held to a goalless draw by Greece in a European Championship Finals group game in Austria. 2016 – Sheyi Ojo, Jordan Rossiter and future red Dominic Solanke all played for England Under-19’s as they lost 2-1 to Italy in their European Championships Semi-final in Germany. These were Ojo and Rossiter’s final caps at this level, while Rossiter was captaining the side. Ex-reds on the move 1988 - Former reserves forward Paul Jewell joined Bradford City from Wigan Athletic for £80,000. He netted 66 times in 311 games for the Bantams, his final League club. 1997 - Former reserves striker Mike Newell signed for Aberdeen from Birmingham City for a fee of £160,000. He had two seasons at Pittodrie, bagging fourteen goals in 54 games, before joining Crewe Alexandra on a free transfer. 2009 – Winger Richie Partridge signed for MK Dons on a free transfer from Chester City. He had nabbed seven goals in 68 outings for the Blues. 2016 – Left-back Paul Konchesky signed for Gillingham from Leicester City on a free transfer after five goals in 155 games for the Foxes. 2017 – Right-back Javier Manquillo joined Newcastle United from Club Atlético de Madrid, after seventeen senior games for the Spanish side. Also in international action 2003 – Future red Daniel Agger played as Denmark Under-20’s lost 2-0 to Brazil in an NI Milk Cup game in Northern Ireland. 2004 – Ex-red Arnaud Bühler featured for Switzerland Under-19’s as they lost 3-2 to Turkey in their European Championships Semi-final in Fribourg. 2009 – Future red Thiago Alcântara represented Spain Under-19’s in their 2-1 defeat of Turkey in a European Championship Finals group game in the Ukraine. -
Final joy and despair 2010 - Fernando Torres and ex-red Xabi Alonso helped Spain to a 1-0 defeat of the Netherlands in the World Cup Final in Johannesburg, with Dirk Kuyt on the losing side. 2021 – England drew 1-1 with Italy in the European Championships Final at Wembley, but lost out on penalties. Jordan Henderson came on as a substitute and was later himself replaced, with ex-red Raheem Sterling also in action. In comes Dom 2017 – Forward Dominic Solanke signed from Chelsea, finally netting his first senior goal in his 27th and last outing as we thumped Brighton & Hove Albion 4-0 at Anfield in May 2018, moving on to Bournemouth for £19m in January 2019. Departures 2008 – Peter Crouch was sold to Portsmouth for a fee of up to £11m, after 42 goals in 134 outings since his £7m capture from Southampton in July 2005. He netted sixteen times in 49 games in his second spell with Pompey before moving back to Tottenham Hotspur for around £9m a year later. 1933 – Full-back Tommy Lucas left the reds for Clapton Orient. He had signed from Alexandra Victoria in 1916 and played 366 reds games, netting three times, winning one League title and captaining England in his time at Anfield. 2016 – Right-back Fred Perry died. He signed from Worthing in July 1954, but made just one senior appearance before joining Sittingbourne in January 1957. Winning run comes to an end 2020 – We were held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley behind closed doors at Anfield, ending a record run of 24 consecutive home League victories. Andy Robertson put the reds in front before the break, but Jay Rodriguez equalised in the second half, the latest of his four goals past us to date. Happy birthday Titi 1972 - Aboubakar ‘Titi’ Camara was born in Conakry, Guinea. He scored ten times in 37 reds games after signing from Olympique de Marseille for £2.6m in June 1999, most famously the only goal of the game at home to West Ham United on the day his father died in October of that year. He was sold to the Hammers for £2.2m in December 2000, although he only made fourteen appearances for them, before being loaned to Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia. 1931 - Centre-half Fred Tomley was born in Liverpool. He signed from Litherland in September 1953 but only made two senior appearances before joining Chester in July 1955. More red arrivals 2008 – Brazilian keeper Diego Cavalieri signed from Palmeiras for £3.5m. He only made ten senior appearances, keeping four clean sheets, but sat on the bench on a further 103 occasions. He moved to Cesena for £1.2m in August 2010. 1934 – Keeper Stanley Kane signed on at Anfield. He only played six first-team games before leaving for Southend United in April 1936. At the World Cup 1966 - Roger Hunt played in England’s goalless draw with Uruguay at Wembley, the opening game of their victorious World Cup campaign. 2018 – Dejan Lovren reached the World Cup Final as Croatia beat England 2-1 after extra time in their Semi-final in Moscow, with Jordan Henderson and ex-red Raheem Sterling on the losing side. Off the mark 2019 - Rhian Brewster scored his first two senior goals as we thumped Tranmere Rovers 6-0 at Prenton Park in our opening pre-season friendly, with Bobby Duncan netting while playing for the senior side for the first time. Nathaniel Clyne, Curtis Jones and Divock Origi also scored as forward Paul Glatzel, keeper Vítězslav Jaroš and left-backs Yasser Larouci and Adam Lewis featured for the first-team for the first time. Also debuting at this level was keeper Daniel Atherton, who actually came on as a forward! New club channel 2007 - The launch of the club’s own TV channel, LFC TV was announced. This was the result of a three-year deal with Setanta. Rick Parry said, “The channel heralds a new era for Liverpool Football Club. We always welcome the opportunity to engage with our fantastic fan-base and LFC TV will bring them closer to the club and the team they love, at what is a very exciting time both on and off the pitch.” Kevin and out 2015 – Midfielder Kevin Stewart signed a new contract with the club, joining Swindon Town on loan on the same day. He played seven times for the Robins before returning to Anfield, going on to play twenty senior reds games before being sold to Hull City for a reported £6m in July 2017. 2016 – Keeper Danny Ward signed a new contract with the reds and then joined Championship side Huddersfield Town on loan for the season. He made 46 senior outings for the Terriers, saving a spot-kick as they were promoted to the top flight via a penalty shoot-out in the Play-off Final at Wembley. Luis at the treble 2012 – Luis Suárez scored a hat-trick as the Uruguay Olympic XI beat a Chile Under-25’s side 6-4 in Maldonado, with clubmate Sebastian Coates also in action. Heading off 2006 - Dietmar Hamann officially joined Bolton Wanderers for £500,000. However, he moved on to Manchester City before the ink was dry on his contract. Meanwhile, Chris Kirkland joined Wigan Athletic on loan. He signed permanently in October 2006, playing 134 times for the Latics in total, again suffering from injuries before moving to Sheffield Wednesday in May 2012. Also that day, ex-reds winger Mark Kennedy joined Crystal Palace on a free transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers. He turned out 48 times for the Eagles, grabbing just one goal before being released in May 2008. 2022 – Welsh right-back Neco Williams was sold to Nottingham Forest for a reported £17m, having played 33 reds games, helping us to claim the Premier League title. Ex-reds on the move 1991 - John Aldridge joined Tranmere Rovers from Real Sociedad for £250,000. He scored 174 times for them in 295 appearances and was also their Manager for five years. 1996 - Nigel Spackman joined First Division Sheffield United as a player, and as Assistant Manager to Howard Kendall. He played 27 times in his two seasons at Bramall Lane, taking over as the boss the following June. 2019 – Midfielder Danny Guthrie joined Walsall from Indonesian side Persatuan Sepakbola Mitra Kukar on a free transfer, netting once in 28 outings in his first campaign with the Saddlers. 2014 – Forward Dani Pacheco joined Real Betis Balompié from AD Alcorcón, playing 25 times as they were promoted back to La Liga, moving on to Getafe in July 2016. On the same day, defender Gareth Roberts signed for Chester, playing 47 times before being released at the end of the season. 2000 - Steve Harkness left Sheffield Wednesday, joining Conference side Chester City on a free transfer, under the management of his former Anfield team-mate Mark Wright. He only made ten appearances before retiring from the game later that year. 1999 - David James left Aston Villa for West Ham United in a £3.5m deal, after just under two years at Villa Park. He played 102 times for the Hammers before moving on again to Manchester City in January 2004. Triple youth captures 2007 - Forward Michael Collins and keeper Martin Hansen both signed on as professionals. Meanwhile, striker David Amoo joined the reserves set-up from Millwall. Also, Angel Vales joined the club as reserve team coach and head of technical analysis. Welsh makes his debut 2000 - John Welsh made his debut for England Under-16’s as they beat Thailand 3-0 at York City’s Bootham Crescent in the opening fixture of a Nationwide-sponsored tournament that also featured Brazil. New deals 2009 – Nabil El Zhar signed a new contract until 2012. The French-born Moroccan international struck once in 32 reds games, moving on to Spanish side Levante U.D. in August 2011. 2002 - John Arne Riise signed an extension to his Liverpool contract to keep him at Anfield until 2007. He signed from AS Monaco for £4m in June 2001 and netted 31 times in his 348 first-team appearances, at either left-back or on the left side of midfield, but left for Roma for the same fee he was signed for in June 2008. He helped us to claim the Champions League, FA Cup, two UEFA Super Cups, League Cup and two FA Charity Shields. Bolo at last 1998 - Bolo Zenden grabbed his first international goal, while winning his last cap as a PSV Eindhoven player, and tenth in total. The Netherlands lost 2-1 to Croatia in the World Cup Finals Third-place play-off in Paris. Future reds on the move 1985 - John Scales joined Bristol Rovers from his first club Leeds United on a free transfer. He notched twice in 85 games for the Pirates, before moving on to Wimbledon in July 1987. 2004 - Roy Hodgson was appointed Manager of Viking F.K. Stavanger. He led them to ninth and fifth place finishes before taking charge of Finland in January 2006. 2011 - Lazar Marković signed a five-year deal as a professional for Partizan, going on to net fourteen times in 65 games, helping them to claim two League titles before joining SL Benfica for £20m three years later. On the same day, future reds scout Jonathan Woodgate joined Stoke City, playing 21 times without scoring in his one season with the Potters. 2015 – Dutch midfielder Gini Wijnaldum joined Newcastle United from PSV Eindhoven for a reported £14.5m. He netted eleven times in forty games for the Geordies as they were relegated, moving on to Anfield for an initial £23m in July 2016. Other red internationals 2007 - Javier Mascherano featured as Argentina beat Mexico 3-0 in their Copa América Semi-final in Venezuela. Ex-red Antonio Barragán was on the winning side as Spain beat Brazil 4-2 after extra time at the same stage. 2011 – Mascherano played in a 3-0 victory over Costa Rica in a Copa América group game in Córdoba. 2016 – Midfielder Joe Allen was named in UEFA’s team of the tournament for Euro 2016 after Wales’s run to the Semi-final. 2004 - Future red Martin Škrtel played for Slovakia as they lost 2-0 to Serbia & Montenegro in the Kirin Challenge Cup in Japan. 1995 - Future red Brad Friedel played as the USA lost 1-0 to Bolivia in a Copa América group game in Uruguay. 1925 - Forward Jimmy Walsh featured in England’s 8-2 thrashing of Australia in an FA Tour game in Maitland. Happy days 2009 – Xabi Alonso married Nagore Aranburu in San Sebastián. 2013 – Ex-reserves midfielder Tom Ince, Paul’s son, became a father for the first time when his partner, Charly Cottrell, gave birth to Halle Rae at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport, where Ince himself had been born 21 years earlier.
