Cup final glory 1984 - Joe Fagan won his first trophy as reds boss as a Graeme Souness strike handed us the Milk Cup in a replay at Maine Road against Everton. 1902 - We also faced Everton with our friendly at Goodison ending goalless. In comes Cally 1960 - Ian Callaghan signed as a professional. He went on to make a record 857 reds appearances, netting 68 times as he helped us to five League titles, two FA Cups, one European Cup, two UEFA Cups, UEFA Super Cup and three FA Charity Shields. 1898 – Half-back Barney Battles re-signed from Dundee for £20, but only played once before joining Celtic for a third spell seven months later. He had won the title two years running in Scotland, for Hearts in 1895 and then Celtic, joining the reds for six weeks for the first time on loan at the end of the 1895/96 season where he featured in two Second Division games and three of the four Test matches as we secured promotion, for which he received a special gold medal and a cheque for a “handsome sum”. 1894 – Keeper John Whitehead signed from Everton. He only made three senior appearances across two seasons with the reds. Semi-final glory 1914 - We reached our first Cup Final, beating Aston Villa 2-0 at White Hart Lane thanks to a brace from James Nicholl. Ex-red Sam Hardy was in the Villa goal that day. 1908 - Anfield hosted the biggest ever FA Cup Semi-final win as Newcastle United beat Fulham 6-0. Reds debuts 1936 - Future boss Phil Taylor netted very late on to secure a point on his first-team bow, with Fred Howe also on target in our 2-2 draw at Derby County. Matt Busby missed a penalty as Sammy Crooks bagged one of his six goals against the reds, with Reg Stockill also on target. 1932 – Forward Ted Hancock debuted as we lost 3-0 to Huddersfield Town at Anfield, with Wilf Bott scoring the first of his five goals past us, Dave Mangnall netting the first of his seven against the reds, and George Crownshaw also on the scoresheet. 1953 - Forward Eric Anderson made the first of his 76 reds appearances as we were beaten 2-1 by Charlton Athletic at Anfield, with Jimmy Payne nabbing our consolation. Future red John Evans bagged one of his six goals against the reds, with Stuart Leary netting the first of his six past us. 1988 – Vitor Matos was born in Vila Nova de Gaia in Portugal. He joined the reds as Elite Development Coach in October 2019. 1866 - Scottish inside-right Jimmy Ross was born in Edinburgh. The ‘little demon’ signed from the ‘invincible’ Preston North End for a club record £75 in August 1894, helping us to the Second Division title, scoring 39 times in 85 reds games and captaining the side before joining Burnley in March 1897. He was a key player in the formation of the Association Footballers’ Union in February 1898, founded in protest at wage restrictions imposed by the FA, and sadly died aged just 36 in June 1902 having succumbed to an acute skin disease. 1895 - Keeper John Jones was born in Holyhead. He signed from his hometown club in September 1924, but only managed four senior appearances while Elisha Scott was injured. He returned to Holyhead in 1925. Trebles galore 1962 - Ian St. John scored a second-half hat-trick as we beat Rotherham United 4-1 in a Second Division game at Anfield, after Roger Hunt had opened the scoring in our most recent League meeting with the Merry Millers. This was his 37th League strike of the season, beating Gordon Hodgson’s club record of 36 set during 1930/31. Don Weston bagged one of his four goals against the reds in a game originally postponed from Christmas. 1942 - Billy Liddell bagged a treble in a 5-2 Wartime League defeat of Rochdale at Anfield. Dicky Dorsett and Stan Polk also struck. 1896 - Centre-forward George Allan netted a hat-trick as we achieved our record equal away League win, 7-0 at Crewe Alexandra. Malcolm McVean bagged a brace, with Joe McQue and Frank Becton also on target that day in what remains the most recent League encounter between the two sides. First and last goals 1959 - Louis Bimpson grabbed his 39th and final reds goal as we lost 2-1 at Lincoln City in a Second Division meeting. Andy Graver struck one of his five goals against the reds, with Roy Chapman also scoring. 1925 – Forward Tom Scott struck the first of his four reds goals as we lost 4-1 at Leeds United. Thomas Jennings scored the first of his seven goals past us, with Russell Wainscott nabbing the first of his five. Jack Armand and Jack Harris also scored for the home side as Matt McQueen took charge of the reds for the hundredth time. 1908 – Forward Charlie Hewitt netted his sixth and last goal for the reds in our 3-1 top-flight defeat at Bury. Tom Kay nabbed one of his five goals past us, with Billy Hibbert netting the first two of his thirteen. George Latham played his nineteenth and final reds game. 1894 – Left-back Duncan McLean bagged his sixth and final reds goal in our 3-2 Second Division win at Northwich Victoria. John Givens and Hugh McQueen also got on the scoresheet. Mixed fortunes against the Mackems 2010 – We beat Sunderland 3-0 in a Premiership game at Anfield. Fernando Torres bagged a brace, with his first strike being a spectacular effort from distance, while Glen Johnson was also on target. 1910 – We lost 2-1 in another top-flight encounter, with inside-forward Jimmy Stewart bagging our goal at Roker Park and defender Tom Chorlton putting through his own net. Willie Clark also struck for the home side. Off, off and off 1998 - Barnsley had Darren Bernard, Chris Morgan and Darren Sheridan all sent off as we won 3-2 at Oakwell, thanks to a Karl-Heinz Riedle brace and a last-minute goal from Steve McManaman. Neil Redfearn struck twice, including one from the spot. End of the road for Heighway 1981 - Steve Heighway made his 331st and final League appearance for the reds as we lost at Arsenal, with Alan Sunderland netting the only goal of the game, one of his six against the reds. 1967 - We also visited Highbury with Alf Arrowsmith on target in a 1-1 draw, a day after our goalless meeting at Anfield. Future Gunners boss George Graham struck one of his four goals past us. Up against the Foxes 2004 - We held Leicester City to a goalless draw at the Walkers Stadium, with Dietmar Hamann playing his 200th reds game. 1964 - Roger Hunt and Alf Arrowsmith were on target as we won 2-0 at Filbert Street, despite being without suspended skipper Ron Yeats. Gordon’s last 1931 - Gordon Hodgson won his third and final cap for England as they lost 2-0 to Scotland in a British International Championships game at Hampden Park. Future reds left-back Ernie Blenkinsop also played for England. On the same day, forward Bob Clark struck his eleventh goal in his 42nd and final reds game as we beat Portsmouth 3-1 at Anfield, with Jimmy McDougall and Dave Wright also on target. 1891 – Future red James Cleland won his only Scotland cap as they beat Ireland 2-1 in the British International Championships at Celtic Park. Digger’s half century 1990 - John Barnes won his fiftieth cap for England as they beat Brazil 1-0 in a friendly at Wembley. Clubmates Peter Beardsley and Steve McMahon both also featured. On the same day, the Republic of Ireland secured their first win over Wales, at the fifth attempt. Ronnie Whelan skippered a side that also included Steve Staunton and ex-red Kevin Sheedy, while Ian Rush was on the losing side. Young debutants 1987 – Future red Øyvind Leonhardsen won his first cap for Norway Under-16’s in their 2-0 defeat by England at Lilleshall. 1995 - Vladimír Šmicer debuted for the Czech Republic Under-21’s as they beat Belarus 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier. On the same day, Sami Hyypiä grabbed a brace as Finland won 6-0 in San Marino, the fourth of five consecutive Under-21’s games in which he was on target. 2011 – Ex-reds winger Adam Hammill won his first cap for England Under-21’s as they lost 2-1 to Iceland in a friendly at Deepdale. On the same day, Adam Morgan, Brad Smith and Raheem Sterling all featured for England Under-17’s as they won 2-1 in Belgium in a European Championships Elite Round qualifier, while ex-red Mikel San José and future reds Thiago Alcântara and Christian Benteke also played for their countries. 2022 – Ex-reds left-back Yasser Larouci netted his only goal at this level on his debut for France Under-21’s as they thrashed Northern Ireland 5-0, with Oakley Cannonier winning his second and final cap for England Under-18’s as they drew 3-3 with Denmark in a tournament in Málaga. Kostas Tsimikas and future red Dominik Szoboszlai also featured in international action. Cut by the Blades We have twice been beaten by Sheffield United in this day in history. 1903 - Jack Cox and Sam Raybould were on target in a 4-2 defeat at Anfield. Walter Bennett scored the last of his five goals against the reds, with Ernest Needham converting a penalty and Archie Needham and Bert Lipsham also scoring as keeper Bill Perkins played his 117th and last reds game, while forward Sam Raybould appeared for the hundredth time. 1992 - We lost 2-0 at Bramall Lane, with Brian Deane bagging two of his eight goals against us. On the move 1995 - Dominic Matteo joined Sunderland on loan. He played just one first-team game while on Wearside, returning to establish himself at Anfield. 2002 - Maxi Rodríguez joined R.C.D. Espanyol from Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys for £4m. John Ritchie struck the last of his five goals against the reds with Harry Burrows putting through his own net before the break. Another award for Stevie 2007 - Steven Gerrard’s autobiography won the Tesco Sports Book of the Year at the Galaxy British Book Awards. Jones back to Wales 2002 - Ex-reserves forward Lee Jones re-joined Wrexham from Barnsley on a free transfer. He netted nineteen times in 56 games during this spell at the Racecourse Ground. Spurred into action 1988 – John Barnes and Kenny Dalglish both turned out as guests for a Tottenham Hotspur XI against Manchester United in a testimonial match for Danny Thomas, with United winning 3-2. Also in international action 1903 – Richard Morris played for Wales as they lost 2-0 to Ireland in the British International Championships in Belfast. 1973 – John Toshack featured as Wales beat Poland 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Cardiff. 1979 – Future red Avi Cohen played for Israel as they lost an Olympics qualifier 2-0 in Jaffa. 1984 – Future red Paul Walsh and ex-red Dave Watson featured for England Under-21’s in their 1-0 defeat of France in the second leg of their European Championships Quarter-final in Rouen to progress 7-1 on aggregate.

Birth of a reds great 1919 - Bob Paisley was born in Hetton-le-Hole in County Durham. He made 277 reds appearances, netting twelve times and helping us to the League title in 1947 before joining the coaching staff in 1954. He took over as Manager twenty years later and remains the most successful English boss of all time, leading us to three European Cups, six League titles, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, four League Cups and five FA Charity Shields. Happy birthdays 1986 – Spanish left-back José Enrique was born in Valencia. He signed from Newcastle United for £5.5m in August 2011, notching twice in 99 reds appearances before being released in May 2016. He moved on to Real Zaragoza four months later. 1983 – Pepijn Lijnders was born in Broekhuizen in the Netherlands. He joined the reds as First-team Development Coach in 2014, leaving the club in January 2018 to take over as N.E.C. boss. However, he was sacked just four months later, returning to Melwood in June 2018 as Assistant Manager. 1883 – Keeper Peter Platt was born in Rishton. He signed from Blackburn Rovers in May 1902, playing 44 times before moving on to Luton Town in 1904. He sadly died aged just 39 in a mini-flu epidemic in Nuneaton in January 1922. Four for Harold 1932 - Centre-forward Harold Barton scored all four reds goals as we beat Chesterfield 4-2 at their Recreation Ground in a Fourth Round FA Cup tie. Unfortunately, we were knocked out by Chelsea in the Sixth Round that season. Beating the Blues 1937 - We won the Anfield derby 3-2 with Fred Howe, Phil Taylor and Jack Balmer on target, and Alex Stevenson bagging a brace for the Blues. Most recently 2022 – We won 3-1 at Crystal Palace with Virgil van Dijk and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on target before the break, with Fabinho converting a late spot kick. 2020 – We won 2-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, extending our lead at the top of the table to sixteen points with a game in hand. Jordan Henderson headed us in front early on, but Raúl Jiménez equalised after the break as we conceded our first League goal for more than twelve hours. Roberto Firmino struck the winner. Cup wins We have twice won FA Cup Fourth Round ties 3-0 on this day in history. 1971 - John Toshack, Ian St. John and Chris Lawler netted as we beat Swansea City at Anfield on our way to the Final. This was the Saint’s 425th and final game for the club. 1982 - We won at Sunderland with Kenny Dalglish grabbing a brace and Ian Rush also on the scoresheet. Unfortunately, we lost at Chelsea at the very next hurdle. Tons up 1954 – Centre-half Laurie Hughes played his 200th reds game as Tottenham Hotspur held us to a 2-2 top-flight draw at Anfield. Billy Liddell and John Evans scored with full-back Frank Lock putting through his own net and Sonny Walters nabbing the last of his four strikes past us. 1915 – We lost 2-1 to The Wednesday at Hillsborough with left-back Bob Pursell reaching a century of reds games. Fred Pagnam scored our goal, while David McLean struck one of his eight goals past us with Sam Kirkman bagging the last of his four. A crazy win 2016 – We won by the odd goal in nine at Norwich City, thanks to a stoppage-time Adam Lallana winner that led to a mass celebration on the touchline with boss Jürgen Klopp having his glasses broken. Roberto Firmino put us in front, but we found ourselves 3-1 down. We completed a turnaround to lead 4-3 thanks to goals from Jordan Henderson, a second from Firmino and James Milner. We were still ahead at the ninety-minute mark but Sébastien Bassong bagged a late leveller before the final dénouement. Off the mark 1904 – Forward John Carlin struck the first of his eight reds goals as we drew 2-2 at West Bromwich Albion, with half-back John ‘Geezer’ Hughes also on target with his second and last strike for the club. Carra going free 2006 - Jamie Carragher was awarded the Freedom of Sefton, an honour that thrilled the Bootle-born defender, which he won for his local charity work and the good example he sets young people. He became only the second person to be handed such an accolade. Other births and deaths 2013 – Right-winger Jimmy Payne died. He notched 43 times in 243 appearances for the reds, including the 1950 FA Cup Final, before moving across Stanley Park in April 1956, where he was dogged by injury before retiring to become a newsagent. 1911 – Inside-right Jock Smith committed suicide two days after the death of one of his children. He signed from Sunderland in May 1892, bagging five goals in eleven outings, moving on to The Wednesday in August 1893. 1907 – Scottish inside-forward Willie Walker died in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. He joined the reds from Leith Athletic in May 1897, netting three times in twelve reds games before he returned to his former club for free in August 1898. 1868 – Forward Fred Geary was born in Hyson Green, Nottingham. He signed from Everton for £60 in May 1895, having top scored as they won the League in 1891 and won three England caps. He bagged fourteen goals in 45 reds games, helping us to claim the Second Division title in his first season. 1904 - Left-half Jimmy McDougall was born in Port Glasgow. He signed from Partick Thistle in April 1928 and went on to be nominated into the club’s official Hall of Fame for the 1930’s, having struck twelve times in 356 games for the reds. He moved on to South Liverpool in May 1938 and later set up a successful chandlery business in Liverpool. 1961 – Former Academy Technical Manager Pep Segura was born in A Coruña, Spain. He joined the reds in June 2009 having led Olympiacos to the League and Cup double, moving on in September 2012. 1974 - One-time winger Bernard Diomède was born in Saint-Doulchard, France. He only made five first-team appearances after signing from Auxerre for £3m in June 2000. Stéph’s debut 1993 - Future red Stéphane Henchoz made his full international debut as Roy Hodgson’s Switzerland drew 1-1 with Japan B in a Carlsberg Cup game in Hong Kong, going on to win 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out. Bad boys 2006 - Abel Xavier was sacked by Middlesbrough after being found guilty of breaching UEFA’s anti-doping regulations. He served a ban and subsequently returned to the Riverside, playing 27 times for Boro in total. 2005 – Future red Daniel Agger was sent off for Denmark Under-21’s in an unofficial international against a Panama ‘A’ side, with the game ending 2-2. Four for Milan again 2003 - Milan Baroš scored four for the reserves as they trounced Bradford City 5-0 at the Deva Stadium in Chester. This was the second time that he had knocked four past the Bantams, following a similar performance the previous August. Dietmar Hamann made his comeback from injury in the same game. On the move 2021 – Midfielder Kevin Stewart signed for Blackpool, playing sixteen times in his first campaign with the Tangerines. 2020 – Victor Moses joined Internazionale on loan from Chelsea, failing to score in twenty games in Italy. 2019 – Ex-reds forward Mario Balotelli signed for Olympique de Marseille, scoring eight times in fifteen games for the French side. On the same day, full-back Ryan McLaughlin joined Rochdale from Blackpool, after eleven games for the Seasiders. A black day for the club 1981 - Bill Shankly died. Undoubtedly the greatest ever influence on the reds, he arrived as Manager in December 1959 and shook the club to its roots. He took us out of the Second Division in 1962 as champions and three years later led us to our first ever FA Cup. He also led us to three League titles, the UEFA Cup and another FA Cup before retiring in July 1974. Luis at the treble 2012 - Luis Suárez scored a hat-trick as we won 5-2 at Norwich City, becoming the first red to score three goals in the same away League fixture in successive seasons, with Nuri Şahin bagging the last of his three reds strikes and Leon Barnett deflecting a Steven Gerrard shot into his own net. Aldo’s treble 1987 - John Aldridge scored a hat-trick past Peter Shilton, including two penalties, in our 4-0 defeat of Derby County. He joined the Academy at the age of seven, playing in the FA Youth Cup Final in May 2021 after turning pro the previous January. He signed a new contract in May 2022, making two senior appearances in cup competitions before moving on to Oxford United earlier this month. 1895 – Inside-left Dick Forshaw was born in Preston. He joined the reds in July 1919, winning two League titles while with the reds, scoring an impressive 124 times in 288 games. He has the unique honour of being the only player ever to claim League championship medals with both Merseyside clubs, helping the Blues to one in 1928 after he had crossed Stanley Park for £3,750 in March 1927. 1888 – Forward Harry Welfare was born in Wavertree, Liverpool. He signed from Northern Nomads in 1912, notching once in four outings before moving to Wrexham the following year. Glory in Rome again 1984 - We clinched the European Cup for a fourth time, becoming the first English side to complete a treble, having already claimed the title and League Cup that season. Phil Neal put us ahead after a quarter of an hour with a scrappy goal, but Roberto Pruzzo headed an equaliser for Roma before half-time. The game ended 1-1 after extra-time, and so the cup was to be decided with a penalty shoot-out. Steve Nicol missed our first kick, but his failure was matched by two Italians before Bruce Grobbelaar’s wobbly legs helped put off a third kicker, Ciccio Graziani. Alan Kennedy stepped up to take the decisive spot kick, as we won the big cup right in the heart of the lions’ den. Heysel: a black day in our history 1985 - If April 15th is the saddest day in the club’s history, May 29th is surely the lowest. 39 football fans died at the Heysel stadium in Brussels before our European Cup Final against Juventus. Although many factors contributed to the tragedy, it is inescapable that violence by reds fans played a major role in the deaths of 32 Italians, four Belgians, two Frenchmen and one man from Northern Ireland. Fourteen British people were later convicted of manslaughter and assault, with three Belgian officials also facing charges relating to the policing of the event. R.I.P. Unbeknownst to everyone, Ray Clemence was making his 665th and final reds appearance, keeping his 335th clean sheet, with Jimmy Case also playing his 269th and last reds game. Tommy’s testimonial 1977 - Two days after we won the European Cup for the first time, Anfield hosted a testimonial match for Tommy Smith, who had intended to retire. The game featured Liverpool playing a Bobby Charlton Select XI, ending 9-9 with both Tommy Smith and Ray Clemence grabbing a brace! Spud was nearly on his way out early into his Anfield career, but later established himself as a vital squad member. He made a total of 249 first-team appearances, notching 44 times, helping us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield before moving to Charlton Athletic for £2.5m in August 2004. Only four other reds have scored five times in the same game. A premier millennium 2008 – We went in 2-0 down at half time at Manchester City. A Stephen Ireland volley was City’s hundredth home League goal against the reds, while a Javier Garrido free-kick four minutes before the break ensured City reached 200 goals against us in all competitions. Fernando Torres netted our thousandth goal in the Premier League before heading in a second to draw us level after Pablo Zabaleta was dismissed for a foul on Xabi Alonso. Dirk Kuyt grabbed a dramatic stoppage-time winner as we won 3-2, while Martin Škrtel suffered a posterior cruciate ligament injury that kept him out of action for over two months. 1914 – We thumped City 6-3 in our Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round tie at their old Hyde Road ground. Jimmy Nicholl and Fred Pagnam bagged a brace each, with Phil Bratley and Billy Lacey also on target. James Maddison equalised late on, but James Milner converted a stoppage-time penalty to secure victory after Mané was felled, our eighth straight League win from the start of the season. 1929 – We lost a First Division encounter 2-1 at Filbert Street, despite Jimmy Smith giving us an early lead. After the break, Arthur Lochhead scored one of his five goals past the reds with Ernie Hine netting one of his ten for Leicester against us as we came under the cosh. Stevie again 2013 - Steven Gerrard scored in his fifteenth consecutive League season, a new club record, converting a penalty as we beat Crystal Palace 3-1 at Anfield. Luis Suárez and Daniel Sturridge had both already struck as we raced into a three-goal lead. Dwight Gayle headed in a second-half consolation, the first of his five goals past us to date. Happy birthday to the long pork sausage 1971 – Former first-team coach and centre-back Mauricio Pellegrino was born in Leones in Argentina. He arrived at Anfield with an impressive reputation, having previously won the Spanish League three times and the UEFA Cup, as well as appearing in two Champions League Finals. However, he rarely impressed in his thirteen reds games, and moved on to Deportivo Alavés after just five months in L4. He returned to the club in a coaching capacity in June 2008, following Rafael Benítez to Internazionale in the summer of 2010. Double treble 1940 - Denis Westcott scored four goals and South African outside-right Berry Nieuwenhuys netted a hat-trick as we trounced Chester 9-1 in a Wartime League fixture at Anfield. Bob Paisley and George Drury netted the others. Other birthdays 1905 - Scottish forward Dave Wright was born in Kirkcaldy. He bagged 35 goals in exactly a century of reds games after signing from Sunderland in March 1930. He remained at Anfield until July 1934, when he joined Hull City for £1,000. 1938 - Inside-forward Alan Banks was born in Liverpool. He signed from Rankin Boys in August 1956, turning professional in May 1958. He struck six times in just eight games for the reds, leaving for Cambridge City in July 1961 and going on to enjoy far greater success in the lower divisions, netting more than two hundred goals. 1968 - Reserves winger John Jeffers was born in Liverpool. He never made our first-team, but was a regular for Port Vale after moving there in December 1988. He also turned out for Shrewsbury Town and Stockport County. 2004 - Kaide Gordon was born in Derby. He arrived from Derby County in February 2021 for an initial fee reported to be £1m, making his senior bow in our League Cup Third Round tie at Norwich City seven months later. He struck once in four outings across 2021/22. Mixed derby fortunes 1907 - Jack Cox, brothers Charlie and Joe Hewitt, and Alex Raisbeck all struck as we won 4-2 at Goodison Park. Jimmy Settle netted the last of his eleven goals past us, with Harry Makepeace also on target. 1912 - We lost 2-0 in another First Division meeting, this time at home. In comes Roy 1965 - Reds stalwart Roy Evans signed on at Anfield as a professional, the day after his seventeenth birthday. One of the club’s greatest servants, he served as fan, left-back, reserves coach, Assistant Manager and then finally the top job for four years. He only made eleven first team appearances before injury cut his career short. A rare excursion up front 1899 - Centre-half Alex Raisbeck played the first of two matches at centre-forward, in our 2-1 defeat by Notts County at Trent Bridge, with Jack Cox netting our consolation as Tom Watson reached a century of League games in charge. Big post-war wins 1946 - We thumped Grimsby Town 6-1 at Blundell Park, thanks to a brace apiece from Albert Stubbins and Billy Liddell, a Willie Fagan penalty and a Jack Balmer goal. 1957 - We hit five without reply at home to Doncaster Rovers in a Second Division fixture, with Tony Rowley and Jimmy Melia both netting twice and Louis Bimpson also on the scoresheet. 1963 - Ian St. John scored as he reached a century of reds outings, with Ian Callaghan and Peter Thompson also on target as we beat Aston Villa 5-2 at Anfield, with the scoring rounded out by a double from Roger Hunt. Chico’s farewell 1994 - Forward Lee Jones made his reds bow as a substitute for Steve McManaman in a 4-1 League Cup win at Burnley as we reached the Third Round 6-1 on aggregate. Jamie Redknapp bagged a brace with Robbie Fowler on target and Nigel Clough scoring his ninth and final reds goal. Liam Robinson bagged a late consolation for the Clarets while Steve Nicol appeared for the 468th and last time. 1968 - We also won at Burnley when Peter Thompson and Geoff Strong struck in our 4-0 top-flight win, after Roger Hunt had grabbed a first-half brace. Underneath the floodlights 1960 - We won the first leg of the Floodlight Challenge Cup, beating Everton 3-1 at Anfield. Dave Hickson, Roger Hunt and Johnny Morrissey bagged our goals. The return was not played for another year, when we drew 2-2 to claim the trophy for the third and final time. Management moves 1995 – Roy Hodgson was appointed Manager of Internazionale. He led them to seventh in his first season, and then to third and the UEFA Cup Final in the following campaign. He was then tempted to return to England to take over at Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 1997. 2009 - Steve Staunton was named as Darlington boss, taking over two days later. He was sacked in March 2010 with the Quakers at the bottom of the League and facing relegation to the Conference. He had won just four of his 23 League matches in charge. 2022 – Xabi Alonso was appointed Manager of Bayer 04 Leverkusen, keeping them up in the Bundesliga and leading them to the Semi-final of the UEFA Europa League in his first season in charge. Young debutants 2011 – Jack Robinson struck his first goal for England Under-19’s while winning his fifth cap in their 2-2 draw with France in the Limoges Tournament. Adam Morgan made his debut at this level, with Conor Coady skippering the side. On the same day, future red Tiago Ilori struck his only goal for Portugal at this level in the same competition as they drew 1-1 with Ukraine. 2001 - Chris Kirkland won his first England Under-21’s cap as a reds player, playing alongside future red Jermaine Pennant in their 2-1 defeat of Greece in a European Championships qualifier at Ewood Park. Happy birthdays 1960 – Scottish centre-back Gary Gillespie was born in Bonnybridge. He was Joe Fagan’s first signing, arriving from Coventry City for £325,000 in July 1983. He won three League titles in his eight years at Anfield, scoring 16 times in his 214 appearances, before moving back north to his boyhood heroes Celtic for £925,000 in August 1991. 1989 – Croatian centre-half Dejan Lovren was born in Zenica. He arrived from Southampton for £20m in July 2014, notching eight times in 185 outings and helping us to claim the Premier League title before moving on to Zenit St. Petersburg for £10.9m in July 2020. 1992 – Spanish left-back Alberto Moreno was born in Seville. He signed on a month later than Lovren for £12m from his hometown club Sevilla, netting three times in 141 reds games before being released in June 2019. New club records 2020 – We beat Aston Villa behind closed doors 2-0 at Anfield, our 24th consecutive League win, a new club record and also a record for any club in the top flight. Sadio Mané and Curtis Jones both struck past ex-reds custodian Pepe Reina. 1967 - Tony Hateley signed from Chelsea for a then club record £96,000 fee. In his first season he grabbed 27 goals in 52 games, but injuries took their toll, and he was sold to Coventry City in September 1968 after a total of 28 strikes in 56 outings. In comes Ned 1904 - Ned Doig signed from Sunderland for £220. He went on to make 53 reds appearances, helping us to the Second Division title in 1905, and playing on until 1908, finishing as our oldest ever player aged 41 years and 165 days. In comes Fabs 2006 - Left-back Fábio Aurélio signed from Valencia on a free transfer. He made 134 appearances, notching four times and helping us to claim the FA Community Shield, but suffered from a succession of injuries before returning to his native Brazil to sign for Grêmio in May 2012. On the same day, winger Mark González was granted a work permit and Fernando Morientes officially signed for Valencia. González struck three times in 36 games, but left the club in July 2007 to join Real Betis Balompié. Heading off 2005 - Steven Gerrard announced his desire to leave Liverpool, after a second successive summer of transfer turmoil. Fortunately, he changed his mind the next day and bagged a total of 186 goals in 710 reds games before moving on to LA Galaxy in the summer of 2015, helping us to claim the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, three League Cups and the FA Community Shield. 2022 – Belgian forward Divock Origi signed for AC Milan after 41 goals in 175 reds games, including a crucial goal as we won the UEFA Champions League in Madrid in June 2019 and six derby strikes. He also helped us to claim the Premier League title, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and League Cup since arriving from Lille OSC Métropole for £9.8m in July 2014. 1954 – Centre-half Joe Maloney was sold to Shrewsbury Town, for whom he played 237 League games. He had signed on at Anfield as a professional in January 1951, but only made twelve senior reds games. International firsts 2007 - Javier Mascherano scored his first senior international goal while winning his 27th cap. Argentina beat Paraguay 1-0 in their final Copa América group game in Venezuela as they qualified for the next stage on maximum points. 1996 – Future red John Arne Riise debuted for Norway Under-15’s as they lost 1-0 to Sweden in Sandefjord. The end of the road for Mighty Mouse 1982 - Phil Thompson played in England’s goalless draw with Spain in the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid, which dumped England out of the World Cup. Late cameos from Trevor Brooking and ex-red Kevin Keegan could not result in the break-through goal. Keegan was winning his 63rd and final international cap. World Cup progress 2014 – Ex-red Dirk Kuyt played as the Netherlands required a penalty shoot-out to see off Costa Rica in their Quarter-final in Salvador, with future red Gini Wijnaldum also in action. Meanwhile, Divock Origi won his last cap before joining the reds as Belgium lost 1-0 to ex-red Javier Mascherano’s Argentina in Brasilia. Heading to the Final 2021 – Fabinho featured from the bench as Brazil beat Peru 1-0 in their Copa América Semi-final in Rio de Janeiro, although they then lost to Argentina. Reds on the move again 2000 - John Scales left Tottenham Hotspur for Ipswich Town on a free transfer. He had only made 33 starts in his three and a half years at White Hart Lane, going on to make just four appearances for the Suffolk club. 2002 - Steve Harkness was released by Sheffield Wednesday. A club spokesman said, “The club thanks Steve for his contribution over the past two seasons and wishes him well for the future.” He had played 32 times for the Owls during his two seasons at Hillsborough. 2012 – Defender Jon Otsemobor joined MK Dons on a free transfer from Sheffield Wednesday after 37 outings for the Owls. Internationals on target 1966 - Roger Hunt grabbed the only goal of England’s friendly in Poland as they warmed up for the World Cup Finals later that month. 2019 - Sadio Mané had a penalty saved having already scored the only goal as Senegal beat Uganda in their Africa Cup of Nations Finals Round of 16 game in Cairo, having also had a spot-kick foiled in his previous game. Didi in charge 2011 - Dietmar Hamann was appointed Manager of Stockport County. He led them to just three wins in twenty games before resigning four months later following the failure of a proposed takeover. New deal for Sami 2002 - Sami Hyypiä signed a new four-year deal, which was subsequently extended twice further until the summer of 2009 when he joined Bayer 04 Leverkusen. He made 464 appearances for the reds, netting 35 times. On the move 1993 - Stan Collymore joined Nottingham Forest from Southend United for £2m. He went on to net an impressive 45 goals in 78 games for Forest. 2005 – Left-back Paul Konchesky moved to West Ham United from Charlton Athletic for £1.5m after six strikes in 169 outings for the Addicks. 2007 – Midfielder Nuri Şahin joined Feyenoord on loan from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund, where he scored six times in 34 games. Meanwhile, keeper Daniele Padelli joined Pisa 1909 on loan from Sampdoria, playing eight times for the Serie B side. 2011 – Ex-reserves forward András Simon signed for top-flight side Győri ETO back in his native Hungary. He only played four League games, spending most of his three years out on loan. 2013 – Ex-reserves forward Lauri Dalla Valle signed for Belgian side Koninklijke Sint-Truidense Voetbalvereniging having been released by Norwegian club Molde earlier in the month. 2014 – Keeper Ian Dunbavin was released by Accrington Stanley. 2016 – Forward Fernando Torres re-joined Club Atlético de Madrid permanently after a successful loan spell. He struck 38 times in 160 games this time around. 2018 – Future keeper Andy Lonergan was released by Leeds United after nine first-team outings since signing for his second spell on a free transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers in August 2017. Starting out 2021 – Left-back Luke Chambers signed pro terms with the reds, having joined the Academy at the age of six. He also sometimes plays at centre-back and is the regular penalty taker for the Under-18’s. On the same day, midfielder Liam Coyle left Anfield to sign for Accrington Stanley on a free transfer, netting once in 22 appearances in his first season with Accy. 1991 - Future reserves forward Lee Jones signed for Wrexham as a professional. He bagged thirteen goals in 49 games in his first period with the Dragons. Death of a legend 2001 - Legendary forward Billy Liddell died in Liverpool of Alzheimer’s disease. He joined the reds in July 1938 while still only sixteen, and left the club 23 years later, having struck 228 times in 534 games. His only club honour was the League title in 1947, although he also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. 1984 – Scottish left-half Jimmy McDougall died in Allerton. He signed from Partick Thistle in April 1928 and went on to be nominated into the club’s official Hall of Fame for the 1930’s, having struck twelve times in 356 games for the reds. He moved on to South Liverpool in May 1938 and later set up a successful chandlery business in Liverpool. Moving out 2007 - Luis García re-signed for Club Atlético de Madrid for around £4m after thirty strikes, including five in our glorious Champions League campaign in 2005, in 121 games. He had also helped us to claim the UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield. On the same day, keeper Nikolay Mihaylov signed from Levski Sofia. However, he was sold to Twente in the Netherlands for €1.8m in February 2010 after a loan spell, as work permit problems meant he was unable to feature for the reds. 2013 – Jonjo Shelvey left for Swansea City for an initial £5m fee, after seven strikes in 69 reds outings since signing from Charlton Athletic for £1.7m in May 2010. He had signed from Newcastle United for £3,000 in January 1928, having helped them to the League title the year before. 2021 – Polish reserves keeper Kamil Grabara left the club for Danish side F.C. København, playing 76 times in his first two seasons. Can he? 2014 – Midfielder Emre Can signed from Bayer 04 Leverkusen for £9.75m. He struck fourteen times in 167 outings, moving on to Juventus in June 2018 after his contract expired. Defensive signings 2008 – Right-back Philipp Degen signed on a free transfer from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund on a four-year deal. Injuries restricted him to just thirteen largely unconvincing senior outings. 1894 – Scottish keeper Harry McNaughton signed from St. Bernard’s. He only made one senior appearance, keeping a clean sheet in the Anfield derby in the October of that year. Warnock sent to Coventry 2003 - Stephen Warnock joined Coventry City on loan. He struck three times in 49 games for the Sky Blues as they finished twelfth in the First Division, becoming their Player of the Year. He finally made the break-through at Anfield under Rafael Benítez, but only bagged one goal in 67 reds games before leaving for Blackburn Rovers in January 2007. On the same day, ex-reserves forward Jon Newby joined Huddersfield Town on a free transfer from Bury. He failed to find the net in fifteen games for the Terriers. 2004 - Bruno Cheyrou joined Olympique de Marseille on loan. He had struck five times in 48 games in his one year at Anfield and bagged one goal in nineteen League games for the Mediterranean outfit.
