Happy birthday Quasi 1961 - Peter Beardsley was born in Newcastle. He arrived at Anfield from Newcastle United for a British record £1.9m fee in July 1987, winning two League titles, an FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields, scoring 59 times in 175 games. He was controversially sold by Graeme Souness to Everton for £1m in August 1991. 2002 – Dutch defender Ki-Jana Hoever was born in Amsterdam. He joined from Ajax in the summer of 2018, signing his first professional contract in July 2019. He scored once in four senior appearances before moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers for an initial £9m l

Jimmy’s treble 1975 - Jimmy Case scored a hat-trick as we beat Polish side Slask Wroclaw 3-0 at Anfield in our UEFA Cup Third Round second leg tie, with Ray Clemence a virtual spectator, to progress 5-1 on aggregate on our way to claiming the trophy for the second time. 3,000 up 1949 - Willie Fagan struck our 3,000th League goal as we lost 3-2 at Huddersfield Town, with Ken Brierley also on target. Vic Metcalfe netted the first of his six goals against the reds, with John McKenna and Jeff Taylor also on the scoresheet. If you like Croatian players 2000 - Igor Bišcan made his re

An epic swindle 2010 – The sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures under the leadership of John W. Henry was completed, after a chaotic few days of court cases. On the same day, Jamie Carragher signed a contract extension tying him to the club until 2013, while future reds Emre Can and Samed Yeşil both played as Germany Under-17’s won a European Championships qualifier 5-0 in Estonia. Michael at the treble 1983 - Michael Robinson netted a hat-trick, his first League goals for the reds, as we won 3-1 at West Ham United, despite Craig Johnston being sent off just after the hour

Happy birthday Sami 1973 – Ex-reds centre-half Sami Hyypiä was born in Helsinki. The mighty Finn played 464 reds games, netting 35 times and helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two League Cups and two UEFA Super Cups following his £2.5m bargain capture from Dutch side Willem II in May 1999. He left the club in the summer of 2009 to sign for Bayer 04 Leverkusen on a free transfer, subsequently moving into management. Other reds celebrating 1998 – Trent Alexander-Arnold was born in Liverpool, signing pro terms on his seventeenth birthday. He has been at the Acad

The greatest performance ever 1988 - We trounced Nottingham Forest 5-0, just four days after we had beaten them 2-1 in the FA Cup Semi-final. It was a stunning display that the legendary Tom Finney described as “the greatest performance ever”. John Aldridge bagged a brace, to add to goals from Ray Houghton, Gary Gillespie and Peter Beardsley. Bruce Grobbelaar was playing his 400th reds game. 1929 - We also netted five, winning 5-2 at Derby County, with Henry Race and John Clark both bagging braces, and Gordon Hodgson also on the scoresheet. Harry Bedford struck two of his nine goals agains

Semi-final joy and despair 2001 - We played in our 21st FA Cup Semi-final, beating Wycombe Wanderers 2-1 at Villa Park, with Emile Heskey and Robbie Fowler scoring after the underdogs had kept us out for nearly eighty minutes. Keith Ryan bagged a late consolation for Wanderers. 1981 - We were held to a goalless draw at home by Bayern München in the European Cup with Kurt Niedermayer rattling the crossbar, but we went through on away goals after the return in Germany. This game marked Steve Heighway’s 475th and final reds game, as he came on at half time to replace Terry McDermott, while Gr

Yanks in 2007 - Liverpool FC announced that George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks now owned 98.6% of the club’s shares and intended to compulsorily acquire the remaining shares. Chief Executive Rick Parry said, “The incredibly high level of acceptance of the offer shows shareholders have faith in the vision outlined for the club by George Gillett and Tom Hicks.” The two Americans remained in control until October 2010. We’re all on our way to Wembley 1965 - We beat Chelsea 2-0 in a Villa Park Semi-final en route to our first ever FA Cup triumph. John Mortimore had a goal disallowed for the
