Tom takes charge 1896 - Tom Watson was appointed as reds boss, doubling his salary to £300 a year from his time at Sunderland, whom he had led to three League titles and three FA Cup Semi-finals in four seasons. He went beyond the remit of Club Secretary at Anfield, involving himself in team selection, tactics and player recruitment, so becoming a Manager in all but name. He led the reds to two League titles and the Second Division championship and our first ever FA Cup Final, remaining in charge until his death in May 1915. Happy McBirthday 1891 - Legendary left-back Donald McKinlay was born in Newton, Cambuslang, near Glasgow. He signed from Newton Villa in January 1910, making 434 appearances before joining Prescot Cables in July 1929. He scored 34 times, including one struck spectacularly from ten yards inside his own half at West Ham United in January 1926! He skippered us to two League titles, and also played in our first FA Cup Final in 1914. Off on loan 2008 – Two young centre-backs left the club to go out on loan. Jack Hobbs joined Leicester City, turning out 49 times as they claimed the League One title before signing on permanently in April 2009. Meanwhile, Godwin Antwi only played seven games for Tranmere Rovers, later joining Hereford United for another loan spell before leaving the reds for good for Vejle Boldklub in Denmark in December 2009. Red bows 2012 – Full-back Ryan McLaughlin played his first reds game as we lost 2-1 to Roma in a friendly at the Fenway Park baseball stadium in Boston on our North American tour, with Charlie Adam on target. 1972 - Peter Cormack made his first appearance as we won 2-0 at Chester in a game played behind closed doors. Brian Hall and Steve Heighway struck the goals. Anfield departures 1958 - Outside-right Brian Jackson was sold to Port Vale for £1,700. He had struck eleven times in 133 reds games since his arrival in November 1951 from Leyton Orient for £6,500 plus forward Don Woan. 1934 – Forward Dave Wright was sold to Hull City for £1,000 after bagging 35 goals in exactly a century of reds games since signing from Sunderland in March 1930. 1998 - Reserves winger Nicky Rizzo left Anfield for Crystal Palace on a free transfer. He netted four times in 41 games for the Eagles, before joining Italian side Ternana two years later. 2016 – Welsh midfielder Joe Allen was sold to Stoke City for £13m after seven goals in 132 reds games since his £15m arrival from Swansea City in August 2012. On the same day, ex-reds midfielder Sammy Lee was appointed Assistant Manager of England, under Sam Allardyce. Signing on 1892 – Keeper Billy McOwen arrived from Darwen. He kept eleven clean sheets in 27 appearances, helping us to claim the Second Division title. He left the reds to sign as an amateur for Blackpool in July 1894, as well as returning to his dentistry career. 1986 - Barry Venison signed from Sunderland for £200,000. He netted three goals in 158 appearances for the reds, winning two League titles, an FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields in his time at Anfield. New stadium plans 2007 - New designs for the new stadium in Stanley Park were unveiled, coinciding with the submission of the official planning application to Liverpool City Council. This was to be a 60,000-seater stadium, with 18,000 in the Kop. However, this project has since been firmly shelved. Stevie honoured 2008 - Steven Gerrard was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from Liverpool John Moores University. The reds go broadband 2000 - It was announced that Granada Media and Liverpool FC had agreed to form a new joint venture company, Liverpool FC Broadband, to exploit our new-media and commercial rights, including delayed online coverage of Premiership matches. God the champion 1993 - Robbie Fowler helped England Under-18’s to claim the European Championships for the ninth and final time to date. Tottenham Hotspur’s Darren Caskey struck the only goal of the game against Turkey at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground, with the England side also including future stars such as Sol Campbell, Julian Joachim, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes. Javier misses out 2004 - Future red Javier Mascherano played as Argentina lost the Copa América Final. The game in Lima ended 2-2, but Brazil won the penalty shoot-out 4-2. Red farewells 1900 - James Kelso committed suicide back in his native Scotland, aged just 29. He only played one senior reds game, in a 4-0 Lancashire League defeat of Bury at Anfield in September 1892. 1938 – Inside-forward Willie Michael died. He joined the reds from Heart Of Midlothian in January 1895, scoring five times in 23 reds games before returning to Tynecastle in May 1897. A new case for Jimmy 1991 - Ex-reds midfield dynamo Jimmy Case joined Third Division Bournemouth from Southampton on a free transfer. He was a virtual ever-present in his one season with the Cherries, before joining Halifax Town on a free transfer in May 1992. Young future reds on target 2002 - Fernando Torres bagged a brace as Spain Under-19’s reached the Final of the European Championships in Norway, courtesy of their 3-2 defeat of Slovakia in Drammen. 2003 – Daniel Agger converted a penalty for Denmark Under-20’s as they lost a shoot-out 5-4 to the USA in the NI Milk Cup third place play-off in Northern Ireland, after the match had ended 1-1. Partridge claims bronze 1999 - Richie Partridge featured as the Republic of Ireland Under-18’s beat Greece 1-0 in Sweden to claim third place in the European Championship Finals. 1996 - Michael Owen played in the same tournament as England drew 1-1 with Italy in a group game France, with Gérard Houllier taking charge of France, with Christian Damiano as they beat Portugal 1-0. On the move 1927 – Future reds outside-right Danny McRorie joined Stenhousemuir from Airdrieonians, having struck five times in eight League games for the Diamonds. 1996 - Future reds loanee keeper Paul Jones joined Stockport County from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £60,000. He appeared 66 times for County before following boss Dave Jones to Southampton for £900,000 a year later. 2011 – Future keeper Andy Lonergan joined Leeds United for the first time from Preston North End, playing 38 times. He became captain that season, moving on to Bolton Wanderers in July 2012. 2017 – Diogo Jota joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan from Club Atlético de Madrid, netting eighteen times in 46 games before signing on permanently in July 2018 for a reported €14m. 2018 – Ex-reds forward Jerome Sinclair joined Sunderland on loan from Watford, scoring twice in nineteen games for the Black Cats. Also in international action 1925 - Forward Jimmy Walsh appeared for an England side that beat Australia 2-0 in an FA Tour game in Melbourne. 1976 - Future red Avi Cohen played in the Olympics for Israel as they lost 4-1 to Brazil in the Quarter-final in Toronto. 1986 – Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye featured for Norway Under-16’s as they shared a goalless draw with Finland in a tournament game in Hungary. 2014 – Future red Marko Grujić played as Serbia Under-19’s beat Bulgaria 1-0 in a European Championship Finals group game in Hungary. 2021 – Alexis Mac Allister played for Argentina Under-23’s as they beat Egypt 1-0 in the Olympics in Japan, while fellow future red Wataru Endō appeared for the host nation in their 2-1 defeat of Mexico in Saitama. -
Happy birthday Danny 1992 – Forward Danny Ings was born in Winchester. He arrived from Burnley in June 2015, with the fee eventually set by a tribunal at an initial £6.5m. He only struck four times in 25 games as he suffered two serious injuries, spending a season on loan at Southampton whom he joined permanently in July 2019 for an initial £18m. 2001 – Czech keeper Vítězslav Jaroš was born in Příbram. He signed from SK Slavia Praha in August 2017, making his first appearance for the club in our 6-0 friendly win at Tranmere Rovers in July 2019, so far making it onto the first-team bench on four occasions. 1999 – Left-back Tony Gallacher was born in Glasgow. He signed from Falkirk in January 2018 for £200,000, making his senior debut in our 5-0 Carabao Cup defeat at Aston Villa in December 2019. Welcome Soto 1979 – Greek centre-half Sotirios Kyrgiakos was born in Trikala. He signed from A.E.K Athens for £2m in August 2009. He netted three times in 49 outings, becoming something of a cult favourite with fans before joining VfL Wolfsburg on a free transfer two years later. Recent debutants 2005 - Peter Crouch played his first reds game as we beat Olympiacos 4-3 in a friendly in Vaduz in Liechtenstein. Luis García and Fernando Morientes struck before Milan Baroš nabbed a brace. 2011 – Keeper Alexander Doni, winger Stewart Downing and midfielder Jordan Henderson all made their reds bows as we lost 3-0 at Hull City, with ex-red Nick Barmby featuring for the home side. 2014 – We lost 1-0 to Roma at Fenway Park in Boston, as the Italian side claimed the Buick Trophy. Reds debuting on tour The reds have twice more played overseas on this day in history. 1987 - We fell 3-0 behind before finally losing 3-2 at Bayern München in a testimonial match for Dieter Hoeneß, with John Barnes scoring in his first appearance in a red shirt late on. Peter Beardsley also made his reds bow, while John Aldridge netted our other goal. 1991 - We were held to a goalless draw at Dundalk, with Dean Saunders and Mark Wright both running out for the reds for the first time. Recently in and out 2008 – Right-back Emmanuel Mendy signed from Real Murcia on a three-year deal. The Senegal-born youngster can also play at left-back, but was released in the summer of 2012 having failed to break through to the first team. 2010 – Left-winger Albert Riera was sold to Olympiacos for an initial £3.3m after five strikes in 56 reds outings. He bagged six goals in 28 games for the Greek side, before moving on to Galatasaray in September 2011. 2012 – Reserves right-winger Toni Silva joined Barnsley on a free transfer, although he only made one senior appearance before being released in June 2013. 2018 – Young forward Taiwo Awoniyi joined KAA Gent on loan, scoring three times in 21 appearances. Sir Roger at the World Cup 1966 - Roger Hunt appeared for England as they beat Argentina 1-0 in a bad-tempered World Cup Quarter-final at Wembley. Visiting skipper Antonio Rattin was dismissed after persistent Argentine fouling shortly before half-time, allegedly for “the look on his face”, but initially refused to leave the pitch. Afterwards, Sir Alf Ramsey infamously described the South American side as “animals”. In memoriam 1993 - We kicked off our pre-season programme with a benefit match at the Don Valley Stadium against a Kevin Keegan All Star XI, in memory of a Liverpool fan killed in a road accident. We won the match 5-0, with Nigel Clough netting in his first reds match. Ian Rush bagged a brace, with Mark Walters and Steve McManaman also on target, as Neil Ruddock also made his club debut. Celebrating the Robins 1997 - We played at Ashton Gate to help commemorate Bristol City’s centenary year. The game ended 1-1, with Michael Owen netting for the reds. Danny Murphy made his inaugural reds appearance in this game. Another friendly win 2021 – Luca Kilian put through his own net for the only goal of our meeting with 1. FSV Mainz 05 in Austria, our opening full-length pre-season friendly. Happy birthday Paul 1988 – Winger Paul Anderson was born in Leicester. He signed from Hull City in a swap deal for John Welsh in January 2006, making it onto the first-team bench just twice, both in UEFA Champions League matches. He was sold to League One Nottingham Forest for £250,000 in June 2009, having spent the previous season on loan at the City Ground. Avi the Olympian 1976 - Future red Avi Cohen played in the Olympics for Israel as they drew 1-1 with France in a group game in Montreal. Free at last 2005 - Emlyn Hughes was posthumously awarded the Freedom of the Borough of Barrow. An office block on the site of a former cinema was also named in his honour, as Emlyn Hughes House! Keepers on the move 1991 - Future reds loanee Paul Jones joined Wolverhampton Wanderers from Kidderminster Harriers for £40,000. He played 44 times for them in this first spell at Molineux, before moving to Stockport County in July 1996 for £60,000. 2012 – Ex-loanee Carl Muggleton joined Gillingham as Goalkeeping Coach. 2022 – Shamal George joined Livingston on a free transfer from Colchester United after fifty senior outings for the League Two side. On the same day, ex-reds loanee centre-half Ozan Kabak moved to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim from Schalke 04, having scored three times in 42 games for Die Königsblauen. Youngsters on target 2002 - Future red Fernando Torres struck as Spain Under-19’s beat host nation Norway 3-0 in a European Championship Finals group game. 2001 - Young reds striker Daniel Sjølund opened the scoring for the Finnish Under-18’s but it was not enough to prevent them crashing to a 4-1 defeat at home to the Czech Republic. The result left them likely to bow out of the European Championships at the group stage. 2000 - Future red Milan Baroš was on the scoresheet as the Czech Republic Under-18’s lost 3-1 to Germany in the European Championship Finals in Aichach, to finish fourth in the tournament. 1996 - Michael Owen appeared for England in the same tournament, as England were held to a goalless draw by Spain in France. Meanwhile, Gérard Houllier took charge of the French side, with Christian Damiano, as they beat Hungary 2-1 in the same competition. Other young international reds 2003 – Future red Alberto Aquilani’s Italy Under-19’s beat the Czech Republic 1-0 in Vaduz to reach the European Championship Final. Meanwhile, future red Daniel Agger played for Denmark Under-20’s as they beat Northern Ireland 1-0 in the NI Milk Cup in Limavady. 2006 - Antonio Barragán appeared for Spain in the Under-19’s Finals as they drew 1-1 with Portugal in Poland to reach the Semi-finals. 2008 – Péter Gulácsi and Krisztián Németh both featured for Hungary Under-19’s as they lost 1-0 to Italy in the Semi-final in the Czech Republic. On the same day, Ryan Babel played for the Netherlands Olympic XI as they beat a Belgium Olympic XI 1-0 in Genk. 2005 - Future red David Martin was in goal as England Under-19’s beat Norway 3-2 in a European Championship Finals group game in Northern Ireland. 2018 – Adam Lewis featured for England Under-19’s as they were thumped 5-0 by France in a European Championships Finals group game in Finland. Ex-reds in charge 2015 – Harry Kewell was appointed Under-21’s Manager for Watford following the senior side’s promotion to the Premiership. He moved on to Crawley Town in May 2017 to take over as head coach. 2017 – Abel Xavier was in charge of Mozambique as they lost an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier 2-0 to Madagascar in Maputo. -
Fijne Verjaardag 1991 – Dutch centre-half Virgil van Dijk was born in Breda. He arrived from Southampton for a club record £75m in January 2018, a world record fee for a defender. He has netted nineteen goals in 222 outings across his first six seasons, helping us to claim the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield. Robbie appears 1980 - Robbie Keane was born in Dublin. He signed from Tottenham Hotspur for £19.3m in July 2008, but only netted seven times in 28 games before making the return journey for an initial £15m fee the following January. 1971 - John Achterberg was born in Utrecht, Netherlands. He was appointed reserves goalkeeping coach at Melwood in June 2009 after over a decade as player and coach with Tranmere Rovers, moving up to the first team two years later. Reds in mourning 2001 - Tom Saunders died. The former Youth Development Officer and long-standing Director also spent many years as a European ‘spy’ for the club, checking out upcoming opponents. He also managed the England Schoolboys and Under-18’s during his career and was well loved at Anfield. 2013 – Centre-forward Dave Hickson died. He made the controversial switch across Stanley Park to join the reds for £12,000 in November 1959, putting an extra 15,000 on the gate for his debut, with one fan running on to kiss him on the cheek! He scored 38 times in his 67 reds games before joining Aston Villa in July 1961. Yet another win 2020 – We won 3-1 behind closed doors at Brighton & Hove Albion, with Mohamed Salah and Jordan Henderson putting us two up inside the opening eight minutes. Leandro Trossard pulled a goal back before the break, the first of his five goals past us to date, but Salah headed in a second to secure our thirtieth League win of the season, from just 34 games. Debuting over the water 2016 - Midfielder Ovie Ejaria, keeper Loris Karius, winger Sadio Mané, centre-back Joël Matip and forward Ben Woodburn all played their first reds games as Danny Ings notched the only goal of our friendly at Tranmere Rovers. Milanese arrival 2010 - Milan Jovanović signed on a free transfer from Standard de Liège. He failed to establish himself in the first team, notching just twice in eighteen outings before moving back to Belgium to sign for RSC Anderlecht in August 2011. Masch on target again 2007 - Javier Mascherano struck for Argentina, having scored his first senior international goal just three days earlier. He was part of a side that beat Peru 4-0 in Venezuela to reach the Copa América Semi-finals. On the same day, Harry Kewell reached a quarter of a century of caps for Australia in their 1-1 AFC Asian Cup draw with Oman in Bangkok. 2011 –Luis Suárez and future red Sebastián Coates both played for Uruguay as they drew 1-1 with Chile in a Copa América group game in Argentina. New signings 2016 – Reds boss Jürgen Klopp and Assistant Managers Peter Krawietz and Željko Buvač all signed new contracts. Buvač left the club in April 2018, with Klopp and Krawietz remaining at Anfield. 2005 - Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard both signed new four-year contracts. Our captain moved on to LA Galaxy this summer, having played 710 senior games, but Carragher retired a year ago after 737 reds appearances in total. 2009 – Gerrard renewed his contract again, this time until 2013, which was of course further renewed. 2008 - Midfielder Zsolt Poloskei signed on loan from MTK Hungária. He failed to appear for the reserves in his first season due to injury, renewing his loan spell for a second campaign when once again he was ruled out for most of the campaign. He has since returned to Hungary. 2011 – Right-back Jon Flanagan signed a new contract until 2015, which was subsequently extended. He played 51 senior reds games, notching once, before being released in June 2018. 1996 – Defender Stephen Wright signed for the reds. He netted once in 21 reds appearances before moving to Sunderland for £3m in August 2002, for whom he turned out on 105 occasions. Double departure 2004 - Two of the coaching staff left the club. Sammy Lee took up a position as a full-time National Coach at the FA, with goalkeeping coach Joe Corrigan also moving on, ending up at West Bromwich Albion. Happy birthdays 1988 - Catalan centre-back Miki Roqué was born in Tremp. He was part of the victorious FA Youth Cup winning side in 2005 and made his senior debut in our Champions League defeat at Galatasaray in December 2006. He was released in June 2009 after spending much of his time out on loan, sadly dying in June 2012, aged just 23. 1980 - Patrice Luzi was born in Ajaccio. He signed on a free transfer from Monaco in July 2002, but made just one first-team appearance, as a substitute for the injured Jerzy Dudek in our long overdue League win at Chelsea in January 2004, leaving the club after three years in the reserves. Six unveiled 1999 - Six new signings were presented to the press as Gérard Houllier’s revolution took shape - Titi Camara, Stéphane Henchoz, Sami Hyypiä, Erik Meijer, Vladimír Šmicer and Sander Westerveld. Le Boss said, “Some have turned down the chance of playing in the Champions League, others the UEFA Cup. Some of them rejected higher profile clubs than we are at the moment. We are very happy they accepted the challenge.” 2003 - Steve Finnan, Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle all reported for the start of pre-season training for the first time. Another new arrival at Anfield was coach Christian Damiano, who joined from Fulham. Maxi the champion 2001 – Future red Maxi Rodríguez netted the second as Argentina Under-20’s beat Ghana 2-0 in the Final of the World Championships in Buenos Aires. Red arrivals 1996 - Defender Stephen Wright joined the Academy. He went on to play 21 first-team games before signing for Sunderland for £3m in August 2002. 2013 - Andy Hughes started work as the club’s Chief Financial Officer. Other moves 2021 – Forwards Joe Hardy and Liam Millar both left the reds, with both having made one senior appearance in the FA Cup. Hardy joined Accrington Stanley while Millar moved to Basel for a reported £1.3m, netting ten times in 44 games in his first season in Switzerland. On the same day, ex-reds centre-half Mikel San José signed for Sociedad Deportiva Amorebieta, scoring once in 27 outings in his first campaign back in Spain. 2005 - Craig Bellamy signed for Blackburn Rovers from Newcastle United for £5m. He bagged seventeen goals in 32 games while at Ewood Park, before the reds activated the £6m get-out clause in his contract. 2022 – Bellamy was appointed Assistant Manager of Burnley under Vincent Kompany. On the same day, ex-reds midfielder Joe Allen re-signed for Swansea City on a two-year deal. 2019 – Midfielder Jordan Rossiter joined Fleetwood Town on loan from Rangers, playing nineteen times for the Fishermen. On the same day, forward David Amoo signed for Port Vale on a free transfer from Cambridge United. He scored five times in 37 games in his first campaign with Vale. 2013 – Winger Paul Anderson joined Ipswich Town from Bristol City in a swap deal for Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, netting five times in 33 outings for the Tractor boys. 1999 - Ex-reds winger Mark Kennedy joined Manchester City from Wimbledon for £1m. He netted eleven times in 77 games whilst at Maine Road and is now on Ipswich Town’s coaching staff. 1993 - Future loanee keeper Alec Chamberlain joined Sunderland on a free transfer from Luton Town. He made 108 appearances for the Wearsiders. He is now coaching at Watford, having made 288 appearances for the Hornets. Ablett in charge 2009 - Gary Ablett was appointed Manager of Stockport County, having recently been sacked as our reserves boss. He left his role at Edgeley Park in June 2010 by mutual consent, following a takeover of the club, having led them to relegation from League One. Stan out of pocket 2002 - A Spanish court ruled that Stan Collymore was in breach of his contract when he had quit Real Oviedo to return to England, walking out just months into a four-year contract. He was ordered to pay the Spanish club £200,000 compensation. Nando the dad 2009 - Fernando Torres became a father to Nora when his wife Olalla gave birth at the Hospital La Rosaleda Compostelan in Santiago de Compostela. -
Nando the champion 2008 - Fernando Torres struck the only goal of the game as Spain beat Germany in the Final of the European Championships in Vienna, with Xabi Alonso coming on as a substitute. A happy day for Shanks 1944 - Bill Shankly married Agnes ‘Nessie’ Fisher. They were happily married for 37 years until Bill’s death. Nessie herself passed away in August 2002. Red death 1949 - Inside-forward Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers died aged 53. He joined the club in April 1915 and won two League titles in his time at Anfield, scoring 151 goals in his 339 reds appearances before joining West Bromwich Albion in March 1928. Ton up for Dirk 2014 – Ex-red Dirk Kuyt reached a century of full internationals as the Netherlands beat Mexico 2-1 in a World Cup Round of Sixteen game in Brazil, with future red Gini Wijnaldum also in action. In and out 2006 - Bruno Cheyrou officially left the reds, joining Stade Rennais after a season-long loan with Girondins de Bordeaux. He had netted five times in 48 reds games since signing from Lille OSC Métropole for £3.7m in May 2002. On the same day, Malcolm Elias was appointed Academy Director of Recruitment. He arrived from Southampton with a track record of more than twenty years in youth football, although he only remained with the reds for three years. 1978 - Kevin Sheedy signed from Hereford United for £80,000. He only made five first-team appearances for the reds before crossing Stanley Park in May 1982, where he found much greater success. Frank departs 2007 - Joint Chief Scout Frank McParland left the club to become General Manager at Bolton Wanderers, although he only remained there three months, and has since returned to the reds’ Academy. He started out in 1995 by assisting John Owens with the Under-14’s. When the Academy opened in 1999, he was handed a full-time role as head of the community coaching department. He returned to Melwood as Director of Academy and Player Development in May 2011, remaining in that role until his departure last November. Also at the World Cup 2010 - Raul Meireles won his last cap as a Porto player as Portugal lost 1-0 to Spain in their Round of Sixteen encounter in Cape Town. Fernando Torres and ex-red Xabi Alonso both featured on the winning side. 1998 - Christian Ziege won his last cap as an AC Milan player as Germany beat Mexico 2-1 in Montpellier to reach the Quarter-finals. Fellow future reds Markus Babbel and Dietmar Hamann both also played. 1950 – Laurie Hughes played for England as they famously lost 1-0 to the USA in a group game in Brazil. 1982 - Phil Thompson was the only red on duty at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid as England were held to a goalless draw by West Germany in the first of their two Second Round games. Their inability to score was to prove costly, as they failed to progress to the next stage. 1997 – Gérard Houllier took charge of France Under-20’s with Christian Damiano as they lost a penalty shoot-out to Uruguay after their World Championship Finals Quarter-final ended 1-1 in Malaysia. On the same day, future red Brad Friedel featured as the USA drew a World Cup qualifier 1-1 in El Salvador. 2011 – Tom King featured for Australia Under-17’s as they were thumped 4-0 by Uzbekistan to bow out of the World Championship Finals in the last sixteen. 2013 – Conor Coady skippered England Under-20’s as they lost 2-0 to Egypt in a World Championship Finals group game in Turkey. Final caps 2009 – Future red James Milner set a new record for the number of England Under-21’s caps that still stands as he featured for the 46th time. He was only in charge for one season, guiding the Cottagers to the Second Division title. 1991 - Ex-reds wing-half Bobby Campbell resigned as Manager of Chelsea. He was sold to Chelsea in July 2010 for a reported £5m. 1933 – South African half-back Hugh Gerhardi was born. He signed from Johannesburg-based Thistle in August 1952 but only played six senior games before returning to his homeland after just one season. 1994 – Spanish loanee right-back Javier Manquillo was born in Madrid. He arrived from Falkirk in a swap deal for Tommy Younger in June 1959 and played 111 times, winning a Second Division title medal in 1962, before returning to Scotland to join Dundee that July under the management of his brother Bob. 1881 – Left-half Jim Bradley was born in Goldenhill, Staffordshire. He signed from Stoke in September 1905, helping us to claim the League title in his first season and scoring eight times in 186 reds appearances before joining Reading in June 1911. 1876 - Inside-right George Livingstone was born in Dumbarton. He moved on to Manchester United in December 1937. 1958 - Inside-forward Willie Carlin signed as a professional. He played just one senior game before joining Halifax Town in August 1962, going on to play more than 400 League games for a series of clubs. 1932 – Outside-right Dick Edmed left the reds to join Bolton Wanderers. He signed from his hometown club Gillingham for £1,800 in January 1926 and netted 46 times in 170 reds. 2013 – Forward Alan Arnell died. He had struck 35 times in 75 reds games after arriving from non-league Worthing in March 1953. He stayed with the club until February 1961 when he was sold to Tranmere Rovers. Award winners 2009 - Steven Gerrard was named the PFA Fans’ Player of the Year, after netting 24 times in 44 outings that season. 2019 – On-loan winger Ryan Kent was named as the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year after scoring six goals in 43 games in a successful season with Rangers. 2022 - Mohamed Salah was presented with the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award for the second time in a campaign in which he struck 31 times in 51 outings as he helped us to claim the FA Cup and League Cup, as well as reach another UEFA Champions League Final. Final victory 1959 – We beat Everton in the Lancashire Senior Cup Final at Anfield, with Billy Liddell nabbing the only goal of the game. Derby disappointment 2013 – We were held to a goalless draw by Everton at Anfield, with Sylvain Distin having a header ruled out for a Victor Anichebe foul on Pepe Reina. At the double 2006 - Krisztián Németh bagged a brace for Hungary Under-17’s as they beat Luxembourg 4-0 in the European Championships Finals in Mondorf Les Bains with fellow future red Péter Gulácsi also playing. Miles away 2003 - Ex-reds reserves forward John Miles signed for Macclesfield Town on a free transfer from Crewe Alexandra, following a loan spell. Roy in charge 1999 - Roy Hodgson was reappointed Manager of Internazionale, in a caretaker role, before returning to Switzerland to coach Grasshopper Club Zürich. Also in international action 1945 – Future reds keeper Cyril Sidlow played as Wales lost a Wartime International 3-2 to England at Ninian Park. 1954 – Andy Beattie took charge of Scotland for their 1-0 friendly defeat of Norway at Hampden Park. He had guested with the reds during the war, and later joined the backroom staff at Anfield after a successful management career. 1987 – Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye played for Norway Under-19’s as they beat Scotland 2-0 in Newport. 1993 – Future Assistant Manager Christian Damiano took charge of France Under-16’s as they lost 2-1 to Poland after extra time in their European Championships Semi-final in Istanbul 2002 – Carl Medjani featured for France Under-17’s as they beat Germany on penalties after their European Championships Quarter-final ended 1-1 in Denmark. On the same day, fellow future red was also on the winning side as Switzerland beat Georgia 3-0 in the same competition. -
Off to Istanbul 2005 - We headed towards our sixth European Cup Final after seeing Chelsea off in the Semi-final. Luis García converted the only goal of the tie four minutes into the second leg, with the referee clearly indicating that the ball had indeed crossed the line, despite Chelsea protests. The Anfield atmosphere remained white hot, with many supporters considering this to be the famous old ground’s greatest ever night as the reds held out for victory. Hearts were in mouths when six minutes of injury time were conjured up, especially when Eidur Gudjohnsen shot past the post deep into added-on time. Clinching the title twice 1986 - Kenny Dalglish completed the first leg of the double by scoring the only goal at Chelsea to win our sixteenth League title, in his first season as Player/Manager. Bruce Grobbelaar played his 210th consecutive League game – a run he could not continue as he was injured at the start of the following season. Future reds Nigel Spackman and David Speedie were both in the Chelsea side that afternoon, with their Chairman stating in his programme notes that “Liverpool will win the Championship over my dead body”. 1980 - We claimed our twelfth League title, and fourth in five years, beating Aston Villa 4-1 at Anfield, who we had beaten to win the title the season before. Israeli defender Avi Cohen put through his own net, and then scored his only reds goal. David Johnson bagged a brace, to add to a Noel Blake own goal. Reaching another Final 2022 – We won 3-2 at Villarreal to reach our third UEFA Champions League Final in five seasons, having already won the home leg 2-0. The tie was level at the break thanks to an early Boulaye Dia goal and a header from Francis Coquelin. However, Fabinho netted after an hour, his eleventh and final goal for the club, before Luis Díaz nodded in. Sadio Mané also scored, with the home side having Étienne Capoue dismissed late on. 2023 – Mohamed Salah bagged the only goal of Fulham’s visit to Anfield from the spot. Big day for Kevin 1971 - Kevin Keegan signed for £33,000 from Sc***horpe United. He went on to score exactly a century of goals in 323 reds games, helping to fire us to the European Cup, three League titles, two UEFA Cups and an FA Cup before moving to Hamburger SV for £500,000 in June 1977. 1977 - Kevin Keegan scored his hundredth and final reds goal as we beat Manchester United 1-0 at Anfield. 1947 - We also won by the only goal, when Albert Stubbins struck against United. 1941 - Cyril Done was on target as we drew a Wartime League fixture with United at Maine Road. After Hillsborough 1989 - Our first competitive fixture after the Hillsborough disaster was fittingly played across Stanley Park as Everton held us to a goalless League draw. The king honoured 2017 – It was announced that the Centenary Stand would be renamed the Kenny Dalglish Stand from the following season. Rafa’s 300 up 2009 – Yossi Benayoun opened the scoring against Newcastle United at Anfield, netting the 300th Premier League goal under Rafael Benítez. Dirk Kuyt netted before Lucas rounded off the scoring with the 200th reds goal by a substitute as we won 3-0. Joey Barton was sent off for a late challenge on Xabi Alonso, becoming the only visiting player to date to be sent off at Anfield with two different clubs in the Premier League. Birthday boys 1881 - Forward Joe Hewitt was born in Chester. He arrived from Sunderland for £150 in January 1904 and was top scorer as we won the title in 1906, netting a total of 74 goals in 164 reds games before joining Bolton Wanderers in August 1910. He also served the reds as a coach, handyman and finally press box attendant in over sixty years’ service. 1926 - Keeper Doug Rudham was born in Johannesburg. He played 66 times for the reds after signing from Johannesburg Rangers in August 1954. He returned to his native city to turn out for Johannesburg Ramblers in May 1960. 1948 - Tom Stanton was born in Glasgow. He turned pro at Anfield in 1965, but moved to Arsenal in September 1966 having failed to make the break-through, although he also did not play a senior game for the Gunners, later finding greatest success with Bristol Rovers. Last stands 1950 – Inside-left Willie Fagan bagged his 57th and final reds goal as we were beaten 3-2 at Anfield by Huddersfield Town to end the First Division season in seventh. Billy Liddell struck the other goal, with Vic Metcalfe nabbing one of his six past us. Albert Nightingale and Jeff Taylor also struck for the Terriers. 1961 - Inside-forward Alan Banks made his eighth and last reds appearance in our 3-1 defeat at Stoke City, with winger Johnny Morrissey featuring for the 37th and final time. Alan A’Court grabbed our consolation in a game originally postponed from Christmas. This was our final game of a season in which we finished third in the Second Division. Tony Bentley bagged a brace for the Potters, with Johnny King bagging the last of his five goals against us. 1930 - Left-half Tom Bromilow played his 375th and last reds game in a 1-0 top-flight loss at Blackburn Rovers as we ended the season in twelfth. Forward Harry Race also made his final appearance for the club, his 43rd outing. 1956 – We hosted Rovers in the Lancashire Senior Cup Final, with the match ending 4-4. After having used the reserves throughout the competition, the first team played, with Louis Bimpson, Alan Arnell, Dick White and Geoff Twentyman on target. We won the replay five months later to secure the trophy for the eighth time. A wee strike 1902 - Future reds forward Ronald ‘Wee’ Orr netted his only senior international goal on his debut for Scotland as they drew 2-2 with England in the British International Championships at Villa Park. Reds centre-back Alex Raisbeck also played for the Scots. Recent League fixtures 2003 - Ex-red Nicolas Anelka struck twice as we lost 2-1 to Manchester City in our final home game of the season, after Milan Baroš had given us the lead. These were the first of the Frenchman’s five goals past us. 2000 - Leicester City won at Anfield for the third season in a row, this time 2-0, as we just missed out on Champions League qualification that year. Tony Cottee nabbed the last of his eight strikes against the reds with Phil Gilchrist also on target while Pegguy Arphexad impressed Gérard Houllier in goal. Signing off from the spot 1998 - John Aldridge scored twice, including a penalty, in his last senior game as Tranmere Rovers beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Prenton Park. He had bagged 174 goals in 294 games for the Wirral side. 1980 - Bruce Grobbelaar converted a spot-kick for Crewe Alexandra in his last ever game for them as they beat York City 2-0 at Gresty Road, having told his opposite number where he was going to place it! Youngsters on target 1994 - Jamie Carragher scored for England Under-16’s as they drew 2-2 with the Ukraine in the Quarter-final of the European Championships in Dublin. Unfortunately, England lost 5-4 on penalties. 2001 – Future reds Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both netted braces as France Under-16’s won 4-0 at St. James’ Park in the Semi-final of the same tournament. John Welsh was sent off for England with future red Glen Johnson also playing. Meanwhile, future red Fernando Torres also struck twice as Spain beat Croatia 3-0 in Middlesbrough. Up against Spurs We have twice faced Tottenham Hotspur in the top flight on this day in history. 1997 - Stan Collymore struck his 35th and final reds goal with Patrik Berger also netting in the first half as we won 2-1 in our last game of the campaign at Anfield. Darren Anderton had opened the scoring for the visitors. 1982 - Kenny Dalglish netted twice as we drew 2-2 at White Hart Lane in 1982, despite going in at the break two goals down, thanks to goals from Steve’s Perryman and Archibald, with this being one of Archibald’s six goals against us. In and out 1979 – Striker Frank McGarvey signed from Celtic for £300,000 after bagging 113 goals in 245 League games for the Hoops. However, he never broke into the first-team at Anfield. 1949 – Scottish centre-forward Sam Shields signed from Cowdenbeath, only playing once before joining Airdrieonians in July 1951. 1911 – Half-back Harry Lowe arrived from Gainsborough Trinity. He notched twice in 136 games for the reds, although he missed the 1914 FA Cup Final through injury, and he moved on to Nottingham Forest in March 1920. 1906 – Forward James Garside returned to Accrington Stanley after five outings without scoring since arriving from Stanley in March 1904. In opposition 1941 - Bill Shankly skippered Scotland at Hampden Park as England won 3-1 in a Wartime International. Fellow future reds boss Don Welsh bagged a brace. 1969 - Tommy Lawrence won his third and final cap for Scotland as they beat Wales 5-3 at the Racecourse Ground in a British International Championships game. Future red John Toshack netted while also playing his third international. For Ralph 1919 – We faced Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park in a benefit match for half-back Ralph Holden, who had represented both sides and lost a leg during the war, going down 2-0. All the reds players donated £2 each to the fund, and a raffle including items such as a 2lb bag of sugar and a pipe raised £15! Silent Knight wed 1965 - Chris Lawler got married two days after helping us to claim the FA Cup for the first time in our history, and the day before the first leg of our European Cup Semi-final against Internazionale. Into the saddle 2006 - Former reds defender Richard Money was appointed Manager of Walsall, leading them to promotion out of League Two at the first attempt. He resigned in May 2008 after it was confirmed the club could not reach the League One play-offs. Other games on this day 1967 – We lost 2-1 at Leeds United, with Willie Stevenson opening the scoring from the spot. Jimmy Greenhoff struck the first of his five goals past us before Johnny Giles bagged the winner, one of his five against the reds. 1924 – We won 2-1 at Notts County to finish the season in twelfth. Goss makes history 1994 - Norwich City’s Jeremy Goss became the last player to score in front of the standing Kop as the Canaries won 1-0. Goss said: “I’ve put that day down as the proudest moment of my footballing career.” The very last person to score was actually Kopite John Garner who took to the field in an odd outfit that incorporated a fez, dodging stewards and coppers to net in front of those left long after the match had ended. For the 97 1989 - We played our first game since Hillsborough, at Celtic in aid of the Hillsborough Disaster Appeal. Clinching the title 1966 - We clinched our seventh League title as Roger Hunt bagged a brace in our 2-1 defeat of Chelsea at Anfield despite a Bert Murray equaliser after an hour. 1988 - We also played the Blues, with John Barnes equalising with a 30-yard free-kick after Gordon Durie’s penalty at Stamford Bridge, one of his five strikes against the reds, in our first game since we clinched our seventeenth League title. Peter Beardsley had a late spot-kick saved that would have handed us victory. 1983 - We claimed our fourteenth championship with three games to play, despite Steve Archibald bagging two of his six goals past us in our 2-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur, as our closest rivals Manchester United dropped points at Norwich City meaning that no team could catch us. 1927 - We also faced Spurs in the top flight, with Dick Edmed bagging the only goal of the game at Anfield. Harry Kane bagged the most recent of his nine goals past us before the break, with Son Heung-min netting one of his six against the reds in the second half. Ex-Toffee Richarlison nodded in a stoppage-time leveller, but Diogo Jota had the late, late final say. Happy birthdays 1931 – Left-winger Mervyn Jones was born in Bangor, one of the smallest players to ever play for the club at just five feet four inches. He signed from Bangor City in November 1951, moving on to Southampton in July 1953 after just five reds outings. 1991 – Former Icelandic reserves midfielder Victor Pálsson was born in Reykjavik. He joined the reds from AGF Århus in January 2009 but failed to make the first team, joining Hibernian two years later after a loan spell with Dagenham & Redbridge. Storming back to the top flight 1962 - Roger Hunt and Alan A’Court both struck in our 2-1 win over Charlton Athletic, bringing us to 68 League goals at Anfield for the season, a club record. We were presented with the Second Division title that day. Red centurions 2005 - John Arne Riise played his 200th reds game as Steven Gerrard equalised with a 35-yard thunderbolt past future reds stopper Brad Jones in a 1-1 League draw with Middlesbrough at Anfield. Szilárd Németh had given the visitors an early lead. 1949 – Albert Stubbins reached a century of reds outings, netting after Jack Balmer had opened the scoring late on as we won 2-0 at Burnley. For the Saint 1973 - A testimonial match for Ian St. John was staged as the reds beat Chelsea 4-2 at Anfield, with the Saint grabbing a brace and Brian Hall and Roger Hunt also netting. 1924 - We played in another testimonial, drawing 1-1 at Aberdeen in a game staged for the Dons’ Scottish international defender John Hutton. 1951 - Our other such game on this day saw Billy Liddell strike in a 1-1 draw at Brighton & Hove Albion, in a game in aid of Harry Baldwin, Jack Ball and Jack Dugnolle. Most recent wins 1986 - Our most recent first-class victory on this day was a 2-0 League win at Leicester City. Goals from Ian Rush and Ronnie Whelan kept us on course for the double. 2022 – Naby Keïta struck the only goal of our League visit to Newcastle United, his last ever reds strike. This result was enough to keep us in the top flight, thanks to a goal from ex-Toon inside-left ‘Wee’ Ronald Orr. He had bagged eighty goals since signing from Blackpool for £150 in December 1897, helping us to two League titles and the Second Division championship before returning to Bloomfield Road as Player/Manager that May. Ins and outs 2018 – The club announced that Assistant Manager Željko Buvač was to take a leave of absence for the rest of the season, with his departure later made permanent. 1906 – Full-back Percy Saul signed from Plymouth Argyle, netting twice in 83 reds games, moving on to Coventry City in July 1909. 1898 - Centre-half Alex Raisbeck signed from Hibernian for £350. He played 341 times in eleven years, netting nineteen times and becoming our first skipper to lift the League title in 1901. He won a further League title five years later, as well as a Second Division championship, returning to the club in 1939 as a scout until his death ten years later. 1897 – Inside-forward Willie Michael returned to Heart Of Midlothian. He had joined the reds from Tynecastle in May 1896, scoring five times in 23 reds games. 1894 – Keeper Billy McOwen left the reds to sign as an amateur for Blackpool, as well as returning to his dentistry career, after eleven clean sheets in 27 appearances since arriving from Darwen in July 1892, helping us to claim the Second Division title. Glory for the kids 1996 - We took a step towards winning the FA Youth Cup for the first of three times to date. We won 2-0 at West Ham United, going on to win the return leg 2-1 at Anfield. Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen were both in the victorious side. Shanks at Wembley 1938 - Bill Shankly won an FA Cup winner’s medal as Preston North End beat Huddersfield Town 1-0 at Wembley thanks to a penalty in the last minute of extra time, making up for their defeat the year before. This was the first Final to be televised in its entirety. International debuts 2003 - Future reds midfielder Xabi Alonso made his senior international debut as Spain beat Ecuador 4-0 in a friendly in Madrid. Fellow future red Fernando Morientes grabbed a treble, taking him onto twenty senior international goals, after just 28 caps. 1997 - Bolo Zenden won his first cap for the Netherlands as they thumped San Marino 6-0 in a World Cup qualifier. He had originally joined as Bobby Houghton’s Assistant, but only lasted four months in the top job. Half a century for Gary Mac 1997 - Future red Gary McAllister won his fiftieth cap, captaining Scotland in their 2-1 World Cup qualifying win in Sweden. Stig Inge Bjørnebye, Mark Kennedy, Jamie Redknapp, future reds Sami Hyypiä, Paul Ince, Jari Litmanen and Christian Ziege, and ex-reds Ray Houghton and Steve Staunton all also represented their countries in qualifiers that day. Rushie yet again 1985 - Ian Rush scored in his third consecutive international, bagging a brace as Wales beat Spain 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Wrexham. Future red Mark Walters represented England Under-21’s on the same day. Djibril on target 2003 - Future red Djibril Cissé netted in France’s 5-0 friendly defeat of Egypt at the Stade de France. On the same day, Steve Finnan won his 22nd Republic of Ireland cap, and last as a Fulham player, in their 1-0 friendly defeat of Norway at Lansdowne Road. Ex-red Øyvind Leonhardsen and future red Robbie Keane also played. Also on the international scoresheet that day were Milan Baroš and Vladimír Šmicer as the Czech Republic beat Turkey 4-0 in Teplice. Ex-red Jari Litmanen netted in Finland’s 3-0 defeat of Iceland in Helsinki. Meanwhile, Salif Diao, Alou Diarra, El-Hadji Diouf, Sami Hyypiä, Anthony Le Tallec, Florent Sinama-Pongolle, Grégory Vignal, future reds Yossi Benayoun, Charles Itandje, Ragnar Klavan, Andriy Voronin and Bolo Zenden, and ex-red Don Hutchison all also featured for their countries. 2001 – Future reds Le Tallec and Sinama-Pongolle both played as France Under-16’s beat Russia 2-0 in the Quarter-final of the European Championships Finals in York, on their way to reaching the Final. More farewells 1955 – Ex-reds forward Bert Goode died in Wrexham. He struck once in seven reds outings after signing from his hometown club in May 1908, moving on to Wrexham in June 1910. He scored 136 goals in 276 matches in his three spells at Wrexham, including playing in their first ever Football League match in August 1921, and is remembered as one of the greatest strikers in their history. 2011 – Australian keeper Dean Bouzanis left the club by mutual consent. He joined League One side Oldham Athletic seven months later. Player of the year 2008 - On-loan winger Paul Anderson was named Swansea City’s Young Player of the Year after helping them to the League One title. Beginnings and ends 2007 - Left-back Emiliano Insúa made his reds debut as we lost 2-1 at Portsmouth, with Robbie Fowler having a goal ruled out for offside. He signed from Sunderland in November 1894 and struck twelve times in 33 reds games, sometimes alongside his cousin, right-back Andrew Hannah. Davy helped us to the Second Division title in 1896 before moving to Dundee the following year. 1974 - Dominic Matteo was born in Dumfries. He netted twice in 155 games for us before leaving for Leeds United in a £4m deal in August 2000. 2020 – Gini Wijnaldum became a father for the third time, to Julian Emilio. 2006 – Welsh forward Tony Rowley died. He bagged a treble on his debut after signing from Stourbridge in October 1953, going on to net 38 times in 61 reds games. Hammerings 2023 – We beat West Ham United 2-1 at the London Stadium, despite falling behind to Lucas Paquetá’s strike. Cody Gakpo soon levelled, with Joël Matip heading in a second-half winner. 2006 - Luis García and West Ham United’s Hayden Mullins were both sent off at Upton Park, with Mullins becoming the fifteenth opposition player sent off against us that season. Both therefore had to sit out the FA Cup Final two weeks later as a result. Djibril Cissé bagged a brace either side of a Nigel Reo-Coker goal as we won 2-1. The game was preceded by a perfectly observed minute’s silence for former Hammers manager John Lyall, who died the week before. Four for St. Michael 2003 - Michael Owen bagged four goals, including his hundredth League goal, as we trounced West Bromwich Albion 6-0 at The Hawthorns, our record win over the Baggies. Gary’s treble 1986 - Defender Gary Gillespie scored a second-half hat-trick past David Seaman, including a penalty, as we thumped already relegated Birmingham City 5-0 at Anfield. Ian Rush opened the scoring, with Jan Mølby also on target from the spot. Future red Julian Dicks was on the losing side that day. This win kept us on course for our sixteenth League title. Mark Walters wins the title for Leeds 1992 - Mark Walters scored the decisive second goal that handed the League title to Leeds United, as we beat Manchester United 2-0 at Anfield despite both Nicky Tanner and Ian Rush having to be substituted inside the first half hour. Ian Rush had scored the first, his first ever goal against the Mancs. The Kop crowed “now you’re gonna believe us, you’ll never win the League”, while Ray Houghton played his 200th game for the club while Barry Venison appeared for the 158th and last time. 2002 - Walters joined Bristol Rovers from Swindon Town on a free transfer. We were able to take our feet off the gas towards the end, as John Welsh made his Champions League debut and we ended the match with Antonio Núñez at right-back and Igor Bišcan alongside Welsh in the centre of defence, although Jacek Krzynówek grabbed a late consolation – cue “Rocking All Over The World”! Rafa was also able to replace Dietmar Hamann with Vladimír Šmicer on the hour, in a replica of the switch made by his predecessor three years earlier that some people claimed had tipped the balance towards the German outfit. Happy birthdays 1960 - Craig Johnston was born in Johannesburg in South Africa. The Aussie battler arrived from Middlesbrough for a club record £650,000 fee in April 1981 and grabbed forty goals, including one in the 1986 FA Cup Final, in 271 reds games. He won the European Cup, five League titles, the FA Cup and two League Cups in his time at Anfield. 1973 - Jamie Redknapp was born in Barton-on-Sea, Hampshire. He struck 41 times in his 308 first-team appearances after signing from Bournemouth in June 1990. Although he only won one winners’ medal in his time at Anfield, the Coca Cola Cup in 1995, he was a popular member of the squad, and was club captain during the historic treble season of 2000/01, going up to lift the FA Cup at the Millennium Stadium with Robbie Fowler. He retired from the game in June 2005 after brief spells with Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton and is now a regular on Sky Sports. 2001 – Forward Bobby Duncan was born in Whiston. He joined from Manchester City in August 2018, moving on to Fiorentina for €2m thirteen months later. 1927 - Keeper Russell Crossley was born in Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire. He joined the reds from Army football twenty years later, but made just 73 appearances in his seven seasons at Anfield. 1906 - Outside-right Danny McRorie was born in Glasgow. Departures 1934 - Legendary keeper Elisha Scott left Anfield to become Player/Manager for Belfast Celtic, after 22 years with the club. He had arrived at Liverpool after being rejected by Everton for being too small and went on to play 468 times for the reds, winning the League title in 1922 and 1923. During those two seasons he only conceded 61 goals in 81 games. He was one of the first players to inspire a Kop chant – the simple “Lisha, Lisha”. 1940 - England international right-back Tommy Cooper was killed in a road accident while with the military police. He had played 160 times for the reds after signing from Derby County for £7,500 in December 1934, as well as becoming club captain. An inquiry into his death led to the ruling that all Army despatch riders had to wear crash helmets. 1926 – Welsh full-back Ted Parry moved on to Walsall. Managerial ins and outs 1984 - 1950’s centre-half Keith Burkinshaw resigned as Manager of Tottenham Hotspur after eight years in charge, during which time he had led them to two FA Cups and the UEFA Cup, as well as signing two World champions in Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricky Villa. He left in the aftermath of Spurs’ stock market flotation. 2007 - Paul Ince was named as MK Dons boss, having resigned from Macclesfield Town a day before. World Cup winners 1966 - Our very own centre-forward ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt won a World Cup winner’s medal as England famously defeated West Germany 4-2 at Wembley, after extra-time. On the same day, former reserves forward George Scott married Carole. Bill Shankly called him “the best player ever to play for my reserves”, but he failed to break through to the first team, later turning out for Aberdeen and Tranmere Rovers. 1997 - Karl-Heinz Riedle, who had won the World Cup with West Germany in 1990, was signed from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund for £1.8m. He scored fifteen times in 76 reds games, and also had a great influence on the young Michael Owen, before leaving Anfield for Fulham in a £200,000 deal in September 1999. Taking the shield 2022 - Darwin Núñez scored on his reds bow with Fábio Carvalho also debuting as we beat Manchester City 3-1 in the FA Community Shield in Leicester. Trent Alexander-Arnold opened the scoring in the first half with Julián Álvarez equalising after the break. Mohamed Salah converted a penalty before Núñez headed in in stoppage time. Double debutants 2008 – Forwards Robbie Keane and David N’Gog played their first reds games as we shared a goalless draw at Villarreal. 2014 – We drew 2-2 with Manchester City in an International Champions Cup group game at New York’s Yankee Stadium, with Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling both on target. He joined the reds in 2006, but moved on in 2016 for spells with Crystal Palace and Arsenal, before returning as a First Team Physiotherapist in August 2020. The Pope is a red 2001 - liverpoolfc.tv website statistics revealed that six priests from the Vatican had signed up to the club’s official site. A spokeswoman for the Roman Catholic Church said, “The Pope is well known as a big football fan and there are computers in every office in the Vatican. It is likely he signed up for the Liverpool website and I wouldn’t be surprised if he did follow their progress.” In and out 1998 - Neil Ruddock was sold to West Ham United for £100,000 after twelve goals in 152 first-team appearances. The game was arranged as part of a deal that took Synan Braddish, Derek Carroll and Brian Duff to Anfield for a combined £50,000 fee in 1978. Welcome Dejan 2014 – Croatian centre-half Dejan Lovren signed from Southampton for £20m. He struck eight times in 185 appearances, helping us to claim the Premier League title, as well as remaining on the bench as we won the UEFA Champions League in Madrid in June 2019. 2020 – Lovren was sold to Zenit St. Petersburg for £10.9m. On the same day, keeper Andy Lonergan was released, having failed to make a senior appearance, while Adam Lallana left the reds to sign for Brighton & Hove Albion. He signed from Southampton in July 2014 for £23m, notching 22 times in 178 outings for the reds, helping us to claim the Premier League title and FIFA Club World Cup. Arrival of a legend 1938 - Billy Liddell signed as an amateur from Lochgelly Violet for £200, turning professional nine months later. He left the club in 1961, having struck 228 times in 534 games. His only club honour was the League title in 1947, although he also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. 1932 - Forward Harold Taylor joined the reds from Stoke City. For Sir John 1996 - We were beaten 2-0 at Anfield by Porto in the opening match of a friendly tournament to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Sir John Moores CBE. Reds in Europe 2022 – We lost 1-0 at Red Bull Salzburg, with Benjamin Šeško netting the goal. 2002 - German side Wolfsburg held us to a 1-1 draw in Austria. Departures 1896 – Director John McKenna resigned as Secretary, having been in charge for 36 games as we claimed the Second Division title. He then confined himself to board duties until July 1921, having two lengthy spells as the club’s Chairman. He struck twelve times in 47 games for the west London outfit before joining Portsmouth for £1.25m a year later. Ex-reds on the move 2018 – Left-back Aly Cissokho signed for Turkish side Antalyaspor, playing 22 times before returning to France to join A.F.C. Blois 1995 in July 2020. 2015 – Ex-loanee right-back Javier Manquillo joined Olympique de Marseille on loan from Club Atlético de Madrid, going on to play 43 times for the French side that season. 2009 – Right-back Steve Finnan was released by R.C.D. Espanyol after just one season and four La Liga appearances in Spain.
