2008 - Fernando Torres struck the only goal of the game as Spain beat Germany in the Final of the European Championships in Vienna, with Xabi Alonso coming on as a substitute.
1997 - Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel appeared as Brazil beat host nation Bolivia 3-1 to claim the Copa América in the Final in La Paz.

A happy day for Shanks
1944 - Bill Shankly married Agnes ‘Nessie’ Fisher. They were happily married for 37 years until Bill’s death. Nessie herself passed away in August 2002.

Red death
1949 - Inside-forward Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers died aged 53. He joined the club in April 1915 and won two League titles in his time at Anfield, scoring 151 goals in his 339 reds appearances before joining West Bromwich Albion in March 1928.

Ton up for Dirk
2014 – Ex-red Dirk Kuyt reached a century of full internationals as the Netherlands beat Mexico 2-1 in a World Cup Round of Sixteen game in Brazil, with future red Gini Wijnaldum also in action.

In and out
2006 - Bruno Cheyrou officially left the reds, joining Stade Rennais after a season-long loan with Girondins de Bordeaux. He had netted five times in 48 reds games since signing from Lille OSC Métropole for £3.7m in May 2002. On the same day, Malcolm Elias was appointed Academy Director of Recruitment. He arrived from Southampton with a track record of more than twenty years in youth football, although he only remained with the reds for three years.

1978 - Kevin Sheedy signed from Hereford United for £80,000. He only made five first-team appearances for the reds before crossing Stanley Park in May 1982, where he found much greater success.

Frank departs
2007 - Joint Chief Scout Frank McParland left the club to become General Manager at Bolton Wanderers, although he only remained there three months, and has since returned to the reds’ Academy. He started out in 1995 by assisting John Owens with the Under-14’s. When the Academy opened in 1999, he was handed a full-time role as head of the community coaching department. He returned to Melwood as Director of Academy and Player Development in May 2011, remaining in that role until his departure last November.

Also at the World Cup
2010 - Raul Meireles won his last cap as a Porto player as Portugal lost 1-0 to Spain in their Round of Sixteen encounter in Cape Town. Fernando Torres and ex-red Xabi Alonso both featured on the winning side.
1998 - Christian Ziege won his last cap as an AC Milan player as Germany beat Mexico 2-1 in Montpellier to reach the Quarter-finals. Fellow future reds Markus Babbel and Dietmar Hamann both also played.
1950 – Laurie Hughes played for England as they famously lost 1-0 to the USA in a group game in Brazil.

1982 - Phil Thompson was the only red on duty at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid as England were held to a goalless draw by West Germany in the first of their two Second Round games. Their inability to score was to prove costly, as they failed to progress to the next stage.
1997 – Gérard Houllier took charge of France Under-20’s with Christian Damiano as they lost a penalty shoot-out to Uruguay after their World Championship Finals Quarter-final ended 1-1 in Malaysia. On the same day, future red Brad Friedel featured as the USA drew a World Cup qualifier 1-1 in El Salvador.
2011 – Tom King featured for Australia Under-17’s as they were thumped 4-0 by Uzbekistan to bow out of the World Championship Finals in the last sixteen.
2013 – Conor Coady skippered England Under-20’s as they lost 2-0 to Egypt in a World Championship Finals group game in Turkey.

Final caps
2009 – Future red James Milner set a new record for the number of England Under-21’s caps that still stands as he featured for the 46th time. Unfortunately, he was on the wrong end of a 4-0 score line in the European Championships Final in Malmo.

1966 - Gerry Byrne won his second and final England cap as they thumped Norway 6-1 in a pre-World Cup friendly in Oslo. Roger Hunt also played.
2018 – Future red Ozan Kabak was on target while winning his eleventh and last cap for Turkey Under-18’s as they beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-2 in a friendly.

Djibril versus Rigo
2003 - France beat Cameroon in the Confederations Cup Final thanks to a golden goal from Thierry Henry. Ex-red Rigobert Song faced future red Djibril Cissé during the game at the Stade de France.
2017 – Emre Can featured as Germany beat Mexico 4-1 in the Semi-final of the same tournament in Russia.

Euro success
2021 - Jordan Henderson played as England beat Germany 2-0 in the European Championship Finals Round of 16 at Wembley, with Raheem Sterling on target as fellow ex-red Emre Can also featured.

King Kenny gets the boot
2000 - Kenny Dalglish was sacked as Director of Football at Celtic. He had been in that role for a little over a year, during which time John Barnes had come and gone as Manager, while Kenny himself had led the Hoops to the League Cup, although Celtic finished 21 points behind Rangers in the League that season.

Penalty heartache
2000 - Future red Bolo Zenden played as the Netherlands lost 3-1 to Italy on penalties after their Euro 2000 Semi-final ended goalless after two hours in Amsterdam.
2019 – Ex-red Luis Suárez missed in the shoot-out as Uruguay lost 5-4 to Peru after their Copa América Quarter-final ended goalless in Brazil.

Raisbeck steps down
1929 - Turn-of-the-century reds centre-half Alex Raisbeck left as Secretary/Manager of Bristol City. He had been in charge for more than eight years.

On the move
1988 - Future red Neil Ruddock re-signed for Millwall from Tottenham Hotspur for £300,000. He only made six senior appearances in this second spell at The Den, moving on to Southampton eight months later.
2011 – Midfielder Gini Wijnaldum joined PSV Eindhoven from Feyenoord for €5m after 25 goals in 134 games for the side from Rotterdam.
2012 - Danny Guthrie signed for Reading, having been released by Newcastle United earlier that month. He struck five times in 69 outings for the Royals before being released in May 2015.
2014 – Sammy Lee was appointed as Ronald Koeman’s First-Team Assistant Coach at Southampton, two days after having been announced as Sami Hyypiä’s Assistant at Brighton & Hove Albion.

2015 – Ex-reds full-back Julian Dicks was appointed First-team Coach of West Ham United, moving on from managing their Ladies side.
2019 – Ex-reds forward Jerome Sinclair joined Dutch side VVV-Venlo on loan from Watford, failing to score in 23 appearances.
2020 – Future loanee midfielder Arthur Melo joined Juventus from Barcelona for an initial €72m, netting once in 63 outings for the Turin side before arriving on loan in September 2022.
2023 - Robbie Fowler was appointed Manager of Al-Qadsiah, However, he only lasted four months in Saudia Arabia before being sacked, despite leading them to six wins and two draws in eight games in charge.

Birth and death
2007 - Dirk Kuyt’s father Dirk died of cancer.
1985 – First-team Fitness Coach Murtagh Dr. Conall Murtagh was born in Belfast. He joined the Academy in July 2012, moving up to the first team five years later.
