Off to Istanbul
2005 - We headed towards our sixth European Cup Final after seeing Chelsea off in the Semi-final. Luis García converted the only goal of the tie four minutes into the second leg, with the referee clearly indicating that the ball had indeed crossed the line, despite Chelsea protests. The Anfield atmosphere remained white hot, with many supporters considering this to be the famous old ground’s greatest ever night as the reds held out for victory. Hearts were in mouths when six minutes of injury time were conjured up, especially when Eidur Gudjohnsen shot past the post deep into added-on time.

Clinching the title twice
1986 - Kenny Dalglish completed the first leg of the double by scoring the only goal at Chelsea to win our sixteenth League title, in his first season as Player/Manager. Bruce Grobbelaar played his 210th consecutive League game – a run he could not continue as he was injured at the start of the following season. Future reds Nigel Spackman and David Speedie were both in the Chelsea side that afternoon, with their Chairman stating in his programme notes that “Liverpool will win the Championship over my dead body”.

1980 - We claimed our twelfth League title, and fourth in five years, beating Aston Villa 4-1 at Anfield, who we had beaten to win the title the season before. Israeli defender Avi Cohen put through his own net, and then scored his only reds goal. David Johnson bagged a brace, to add to a Noel Blake own goal.

Reaching another Final
2022 – We won 3-2 at Villarreal to reach our third UEFA Champions League Final in five seasons, having already won the home leg 2-0. The tie was level at the break thanks to an early Boulaye Dia goal and a header from Francis Coquelin. However, Fabinho netted after an hour, his eleventh and final goal for the club, before Luis Díaz nodded in. Sadio Mané also scored, with the home side having Étienne Capoue dismissed late on.
2023 – Mohamed Salah bagged the only goal of Fulham’s visit to Anfield from the spot.

Big day for Kevin
1971 - Kevin Keegan signed for £33,000 from Sc***horpe United. He went on to score exactly a century of goals in 323 reds games, helping to fire us to the European Cup, three League titles, two UEFA Cups and an FA Cup before moving to Hamburger SV for £500,000 in June 1977.
1977 - Kevin Keegan scored his hundredth and final reds goal as we beat Manchester United 1-0 at Anfield.
1947 - We also won by the only goal, when Albert Stubbins struck against United.
1941 - Cyril Done was on target as we drew a Wartime League fixture with United at Maine Road.

After Hillsborough
1989 - Our first competitive fixture after the Hillsborough disaster was fittingly played across Stanley Park as Everton held us to a goalless League draw.

The king honoured
2017 – It was announced that the Centenary Stand would be renamed the Kenny Dalglish Stand from the following season.

Rafa’s 300 up
2009 – Yossi Benayoun opened the scoring against Newcastle United at Anfield, netting the 300th Premier League goal under Rafael Benítez. Dirk Kuyt netted before Lucas rounded off the scoring with the 200th reds goal by a substitute as we won 3-0. Joey Barton was sent off for a late challenge on Xabi Alonso, becoming the only visiting player to date to be sent off at Anfield with two different clubs in the Premier League.

Birthday boys
1881 - Forward Joe Hewitt was born in Chester. He arrived from Sunderland for £150 in January 1904 and was top scorer as we won the title in 1906, netting a total of 74 goals in 164 reds games before joining Bolton Wanderers in August 1910. He also served the reds as a coach, handyman and finally press box attendant in over sixty years’ service.

1926 - Keeper Doug Rudham was born in Johannesburg. He played 66 times for the reds after signing from Johannesburg Rangers in August 1954. He returned to his native city to turn out for Johannesburg Ramblers in May 1960.
1948 - Tom Stanton was born in Glasgow. He turned pro at Anfield in 1965, but moved to Arsenal in September 1966 having failed to make the break-through, although he also did not play a senior game for the Gunners, later finding greatest success with Bristol Rovers.

Last stands
1950 – Inside-left Willie Fagan bagged his 57th and final reds goal as we were beaten 3-2 at Anfield by Huddersfield Town to end the First Division season in seventh. Billy Liddell struck the other goal, with Vic Metcalfe nabbing one of his six past us. Albert Nightingale and Jeff Taylor also struck for the Terriers.
1961 - Inside-forward Alan Banks made his eighth and last reds appearance in our 3-1 defeat at Stoke City, with winger Johnny Morrissey featuring for the 37th and final time. Alan A’Court grabbed our consolation in a game originally postponed from Christmas. This was our final game of a season in which we finished third in the Second Division. Tony Bentley bagged a brace for the Potters, with Johnny King bagging the last of his five goals against us.

1930 - Left-half Tom Bromilow played his 375th and last reds game in a 1-0 top-flight loss at Blackburn Rovers as we ended the season in twelfth. Forward Harry Race also made his final appearance for the club, his 43rd outing.
1956 – We hosted Rovers in the Lancashire Senior Cup Final, with the match ending 4-4. After having used the reserves throughout the competition, the first team played, with Louis Bimpson, Alan Arnell, Dick White and Geoff Twentyman on target. We won the replay five months later to secure the trophy for the eighth time.

A wee strike
1902 - Future reds forward Ronald ‘Wee’ Orr netted his only senior international goal on his debut for Scotland as they drew 2-2 with England in the British International Championships at Villa Park. Reds centre-back Alex Raisbeck also played for the Scots.

Recent League fixtures
2003 - Ex-red Nicolas Anelka struck twice as we lost 2-1 to Manchester City in our final home game of the season, after Milan Baroš had given us the lead. These were the first of the Frenchman’s five goals past us.
2000 - Leicester City won at Anfield for the third season in a row, this time 2-0, as we just missed out on Champions League qualification that year. Tony Cottee nabbed the last of his eight strikes against the reds with Phil Gilchrist also on target while Pegguy Arphexad impressed Gérard Houllier in goal.

Signing off from the spot
1998 - John Aldridge scored twice, including a penalty, in his last senior game as Tranmere Rovers beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Prenton Park. He had bagged 174 goals in 294 games for the Wirral side.
1980 - Bruce Grobbelaar converted a spot-kick for Crewe Alexandra in his last ever game for them as they beat York City 2-0 at Gresty Road, having told his opposite number where he was going to place it!

Youngsters on target
1994 - Jamie Carragher scored for England Under-16’s as they drew 2-2 with the Ukraine in the Quarter-final of the European Championships in Dublin. Unfortunately, England lost 5-4 on penalties.
2001 – Future reds Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both netted braces as France Under-16’s won 4-0 at St. James’ Park in the Semi-final of the same tournament. John Welsh was sent off for England with future red Glen Johnson also playing. Meanwhile, future red Fernando Torres also struck twice as Spain beat Croatia 3-0 in Middlesbrough.

Up against Spurs
We have twice faced Tottenham Hotspur in the top flight on this day in history.
1997 - Stan Collymore struck his 35th and final reds goal with Patrik Berger also netting in the first half as we won 2-1 in our last game of the campaign at Anfield. Darren Anderton had opened the scoring for the visitors.
1982 - Kenny Dalglish netted twice as we drew 2-2 at White Hart Lane in 1982, despite going in at the break two goals down, thanks to goals from Steve’s Perryman and Archibald, with this being one of Archibald’s six goals against us.

In and out
1979 – Striker Frank McGarvey signed from Celtic for £300,000 after bagging 113 goals in 245 League games for the Hoops. However, he never broke into the first-team at Anfield.
1949 – Scottish centre-forward Sam Shields signed from Cowdenbeath, only playing once before joining Airdrieonians in July 1951.

1911 – Half-back Harry Lowe arrived from Gainsborough Trinity. He notched twice in 136 games for the reds, although he missed the 1914 FA Cup Final through injury, and he moved on to Nottingham Forest in March 1920.
1906 – Forward James Garside returned to Accrington Stanley after five outings without scoring since arriving from Stanley in March 1904.

In opposition
1941 - Bill Shankly skippered Scotland at Hampden Park as England won 3-1 in a Wartime International. Fellow future reds boss Don Welsh bagged a brace.
1969 - Tommy Lawrence won his third and final cap for Scotland as they beat Wales 5-3 at the Racecourse Ground in a British International Championships game. Future red John Toshack netted while also playing his third international.

For Ralph
1919 – We faced Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park in a benefit match for half-back Ralph Holden, who had represented both sides and lost a leg during the war, going down 2-0. All the reds players donated £2 each to the fund, and a raffle including items such as a 2lb bag of sugar and a pipe raised £15!

Silent Knight wed
1965 - Chris Lawler got married two days after helping us to claim the FA Cup for the first time in our history, and the day before the first leg of our European Cup Semi-final against Internazionale.

Into the saddle
2006 - Former reds defender Richard Money was appointed Manager of Walsall, leading them to promotion out of League Two at the first attempt. He resigned in May 2008 after it was confirmed the club could not reach the League One play-offs.

Other games on this day
1967 – We lost 2-1 at Leeds United, with Willie Stevenson opening the scoring from the spot. Jimmy Greenhoff struck the first of his five goals past us before Johnny Giles bagged the winner, one of his five against the reds.
1924 – We won 2-1 at Notts County to finish the season in twelfth. Ralph Cornwell put through his own net, with our other goal coming from Danny Shone.

Also in international action
1919 – Ex-reds keeper Sam Hardy played alongside Ephraim Longworth as England beat Scotland 4-3 in a Victory International at Hampden Park.
1993 – Future reds Assistant Manager Christian Damiano took charge of France Under-16’s as they beat Hungary 3-0 in their European Championships Quarter-final in Istanbul
2006 – Future reds Krisztián Németh and András Simon both featured as Hungary Under-17’s lost 1-0 to Russia in a European Championships Finals group game in Luxembourg.

2011 – Adam Morgan, Brad Smith and future red Emre Can all played for the Under-17’s in European Championships Finals group games in Serbia.
2017 – Future red Ozan Kabak featured for Turkey Under-17’s in their 3-2 defeat by Spain in a European Championships Finals group game in Croatia.
2019 – Ki-Jana Hoever played as the Dutch Under-17’s beat Sweden 2-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Waterford. On the same day, ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England in the same competition as they drew 1-1 with France in Longford.
