Martin born 1984 - Centre-back Martin Škrtel was born in Handlová. The tough Slovakian signed from Zenit St. Petersburg for £6.5m in January 2008 to become our most expensive defender to date. He notched eighteen goals in 320 games in total, including one in our Carling Cup win at Wembley in February 2012, moving on to Fenerbahçe SK for £5.5m in July 2016. Unfortunately, he also put through his own net a joint club record eight times. 2010 - He skippered the side for the first time as we were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Utrecht in our final UEFA Europa League group game. Aldo off 1989 - John Aldridge left for Real Sociedad for £1.1m after 63 goals in 104 reds games, to become their first non-Basque player. He was signed by ex-red John Toshack and struck 33 times in 63 games in two years before returning to Merseyside with Tranmere Rovers. Beating the Mancs 2008 – Albert Riera made his reds bow as we came from behind to beat Manchester United 2-1 at Anfield. Carlos Tévez opened the scoring for the visitors after just three minutes, with one of his four goals past us to date, with a Wes Brown own goal drawing us level before half an hour had elapsed. Birth of the legend 1913 - Bill Shankly was born in Glenbuck, Ayrshire. He was the ninth of ten children, and the youngest of five boys. Words cannot fully explain his importance to the history of Liverpool Football Club. However, his honours as reds boss between December 1959 and July 1974 included three League titles, two FA Cups, UEFA Cup and the Second Division championship. 1936 - Centre-half John Nicholson was born in Liverpool. He signed as a professional in January 1957, but only made one senior appearance before joining Port Vale in August 1961, playing over 200 games for them.

2,000 up 2004 - We hosted our 2,000th League game, with West Bromwich Albion on the receiving end of a 3-0 defeat. Steve Finnan scored his only reds goal while Luis García bagged the first of his thirty strikes, after Steven Gerrard had opened the scoring. Doss debuts 1981 - Italian left-back Andrea Dossena was born in Lodi. He signed from Udinese for £7m in July 2008 in a four-year deal. He made 31 appearances, saving his two goals for the same week, first at home to Real Madrid and then at Manchester United. He left Anfield to sign for SSC Napoli for €4.25m in January 2010. A n

A treble for Ron, Ron, Ron 1990 - Ronnie Rosenthal scored a hat-trick in his second reds appearance, and his first start, as we beat Charlton Athletic 4-0 in a League encounter at Selhurst Park. Future Addick John Barnes nabbed the other late on. Andy off the mark 2011 – We beat Manchester City 3-0 at Anfield, with right-back Jon Flanagan making his reds bow. Andy Carroll struck his first two reds goals, with Dirk Kuyt also netting before the break. 1952 – We won 2-1 at Maine Road in a First Division fixture, thanks to goals from inside-forward Kevin Baron and winger Jimmy Payne.
