Souey on his way out
1994 - Graeme Souness took charge of his final game as Manager as we were humbled at home by First Division Bristol City, who won an FA Cup Third Round replay 1-0 thanks to Brian Tinnion’s second-half goal.

Heading to finals
2005 - Steven Gerrard grabbed the only goal of our Carling Cup Semi-final second leg at Watford, with Igor Bišcan playing his hundredth reds game. Florent Sinama-Pongolle came on as a substitute for Milan Baroš and was later himself substituted just four minutes later having damaged a cartilage in his knee.
2012 – We drew 2-2 with Manchester City in the second leg of our Carling Cup Semi-final at Anfield. Nigel de Jong levelled the tie on aggregate after half an hour before Steven Gerrard scored from the spot. Edin Džeko struck before Craig Bellamy netted the crucial goal.

Legend signs on
1910 - Left-back Donald McKinlay signed from Newton Villa in Glasgow. He made 434 appearances across two decades, and scored 34 times, including one struck spectacularly from ten yards inside his own half at West Ham United in January 1926! He skippered us to two League titles, and also played in our first FA Cup Final, in 1914. He returned to the amateur game in July 1929 with Prescot Cables.
1930 – Scottish centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw signed from Bury for £8,000. He struck four times in 291 appearances at centre-half. He returned to his native land in September 1938, joining Third Lanark.

Derby despair
2009 – We were held to a 1-1 draw in our FA Cup Fourth Round tie at Anfield, after being drawn against Everton in the competition for the sixteenth time, more than any other club. Joleon Lescott opened the scoring with Steven Gerrard bagging our equaliser.

Kirks out again
2003 - Chris Kirkland suffered a posterior knee ligament injury in our goalless FA Cup Fourth Round draw at Crystal Palace that kept him out of the side for nine months. Worse was to follow, as we lost the Anfield replay.

First and lasts
1896 - Winger Ben Bull scored on his only reds appearance as we thumped Lincoln City 6-1 in a Second Division fixture at Anfield. Fred Geary, Frank Becton and George Allan were also on target, with Jimmy Ross netting a brace. Ben Gillespie struck the first of his six goals against us, with the other five coming with Manchester City.
1939 – Forward Ron Jones played his fifth and last reds game as we lost 2-1 to Bolton Wanderers in the top flight at Anfield, with Willie Fagan nabbing our consolation. George Hunt struck the last of his five goals past us before Thomas Sinclair put the visitors two ahead.
1964 – Full-back Bobby Thomson appeared for the eighth and last time as we shared a goalless draw with Port Vale in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie at Anfield. We won the replay but went out to Swansea Town in the Sixth Round.

Winning on the south coast
2014 - We beat Bournemouth 2-0 in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie at the Goldsands Stadium, thanks to goals from Victor Moses and Daniel Sturridge, with Luis Suárez setting them both up. This was Moses’ second and last reds goal.

Off on loan
1985 - Gary Ablett joined Derby County on loan. He made eight appearances before returning to break through into the first team at Anfield.
2008 - Ex-reserves forward John Miles joined MK Dons on loan from Accrington Stanley, failing to score in twelve outings.

FA Cup wins
Apart from the Bristol City debacle and the games at Bournemouth and Crystal Palace, we have played six other FA Cup ties on this day, all at Anfield, winning three and losing once.
1902 - Tommy Robertson had a penalty saved by keeper George Kitchen, but scored the rebound, his 35th and final goal for the club. John ‘Sailor’ Hunter also scored as we twice led but drew 2-2 with Everton, our first meeting in the competition, with Jack Sharp bagging a late equaliser for the Blues after Sandy Young had nabbed one of his twelve goals against us. We won the Goodison replay to progress but went out to Southampton at the next stage.

Grimsby Town, Northampton Town and Burnley are the teams who have been knocked out of the cup at Anfield on this day over the years, all in the Fourth Round.
1958 - We won our first ever meeting with Northampton 3-1, thanks to goals from Billy Liddell, Louis Bimpson and a Ben Collins own goal with strange weather conditions causing the postponement of Everton’s cup tie across the park!
1947 - Albert Stubbins and Cyril Done struck as we beat Grimsby 2-0, a year in which we made it as far as the Semi-final, losing out to Burnley.
1969 - We beat Burnley 2-1 thanks to a Tommy Smith penalty and an Emlyn Hughes pile-driver, with the Clarets nearly securing a replay after Frank Casper’s header struck the bar. Leicester City knocked us out at the next hurdle, after a replay.

On our way to Wembley
1984 - We won a League Cup Fifth Round replay at home to Sheffield Wednesday as we edged towards a fourth straight triumph in the competition. Ian Rush netted twice as we won 3-0 with Michael Robinson also on target, while Craig Johnston reached a century of reds appearances.
2017 – We failed at the final hurdle as Southampton won the second leg of our League Cup Semi-final at Anfield, to progress 2-0 on aggregate. Shane Long struck the only goal in injury time, one of his four goals past us to date.

Joe’s half century
1908 – Forward Joe Hewitt bagged his fiftieth reds goal in our 1-1 top-flight draw at Birmingham City, with Arthur Mounteney netting the last of his five goals against the reds.

Beaten
1936 - We lost an FA Cup Fourth Round encounter at Anfield 2-0 to Arsenal, with the Gunners going on to lift the trophy for the second time that season. Ray Bowden nabbed the last of his four goals against us, with Joe Hulme netting the last of his ten. A minute’s silence was observed before kick off in honour of the late King George V. Reds boss George Patterson missed the game due to being on a fruitless transfer mission to Sunderland.

Jari the centurion
2006 - Ex-red Jari Litmanen won his hundredth cap as Roy Hodgson’s Finland lost 1-0 to South Korea in a tournament game in Saudi Arabia. On the same day, Rigobert Song played his 101st game for Cameroon in their 2-0 defeat of Togo in the Africa Cup of Nations Finals in Cairo.

Beating the Mancs
1930 - Harry Race grabbed his eighteenth and last goal as we beat Manchester United 1-0 in a First Division encounter at Anfield, with centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw and half-back Tommy Gardner both making their reds bows.
1919 - Robert Matthews netted as we were held to a draw in a Wartime League match in L4.

Harold’s treble
1933 – Centre-forward Harold Barton scored a hat-trick as we beat SK Rapid Wien 5-2 in a friendly at Anfield. Syd Roberts and Alf Hanson also netted.

Ryan departs
2011 - Ryan Babel was sold to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim for £6m. He signed from Ajax for £11.5m in July 2007, proving a very useful asset in his first season, especially from the bench, as he equalled Djibril Cissé’s club record of seven strikes in a season as a substitute. However, subsequent campaigns were far less productive, and he struck a total of 22 times in 146 appearances. On the same day, reserves forward David Amoo joined MK Dons on loan, making three substitute appearances.

Happy birthday Bobby
1936 - Short-lived reds forward Bobby Murdoch was born in Garston. He struck seven times in nineteen reds games after signing as a professional in May 1957, as we struggled in the Second Division. He moved on to Barrow in September 1959.
1988 – Ex-reserves winger Adam Hammill was born in Liverpool. He was part of the victorious FA Youth Cup winning side in 2006 and was sold to Barnsley in August 2009 after several loan spells away from Anfield, including one at Oakwell.

Managers in and out
2005 - Steve McMahon was appointed Manager of Perth Glory. He remained in the post for eleven months. On the same day, ex-red Frode Kippe played as Norway won a friendly 1-0 in Bahrain.
2006 - Mark Wright was suspended as Manager of Peterborough United. Six days later he was sacked for gross misconduct after failing to appear before the board. It is alleged that he made a racist comment to one of his staff, although he has always denied the charge.
2022 - Roy Hodgson came out of retirement to become Watford’s new boss but was unable to save them from relegation from the top flight.

On the move
2007 - Salif Diao joined Stoke City on a free transfer, having made seventeen appearances while on loan at the Britannia Stadium. On the same day, ex-reds reserves forward Jon Newby joined Southport from Wrexham. He struck just once in eleven outings before moving on to Morecambe.
2013 – Reserves forward Michael Ngoo joined Heart Of Midlothian on loan, netting five times in seventeen games for the Scottish side. On the same day ex-reds left-back Emiliano Insúa joined Club Atlético de Madrid from Sporting Clube de Portugal for €3.5m after six goals in sixth outings while with the Lisbon outfit.

2017 – Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho signed a new five-year contract. He moved on to Barcelona for a mammoth initial £105m fee in January 2018 after 54 goals in 201 reds games since arriving from Internazionale for £8.5m in January 2013.
2018 – Left-back Tony Gallacher signed from Falkirk for £200,000, making his senior bow in our League Cup tie at Aston Villa last December.
2019 – Ex-reds loanee winger Victor Moses joined Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü on another temporary switch from Chelsea, scoring four times in sixteen appearances that season.

African reds
2022 – Sadio Mané struck as Senegal beat Cape Verde 2-0 in their Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 game in Cameroon.
2017 – Future red Mohamed Salah netted the only goal of Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations group game against Ghana in Gabon.
2013 – Future reds loanee Victor Moses played in Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Zambia in South Africa.
2008 - Momo Sissoko won his final cap as a red as Mali held Nigeria to a goalless draw in an Africa Cup of Nations group game in Ghana, with future red Kolo Touré playing as Ivory Coast beat Benin 4-1.

2004 - Ex-red Titi Camara netted as Guinea beat DR Congo 2-1 in their Africa Cup of Nations opener in Tunis. On the same day, ex-red Rigobert Song skippered Cameroon as they were held 1-1 by Algeria in Sfax, winning his fiftieth cap.
2002 - Song captained his country in the previous tournament as they beat the Ivory Coast 1-0 in Mali, with future red Kolo Touré on the losing side.
2001 - Rigobert Song won his first cap as a West Ham United player, his fiftieth for his country, as Cameroon won a friendly 3-1 in Benin.

Harry on target
2011 – Ex-red Harry Kewell netted as Australia thumped Uzbekistan 6-0 in their AFC Asian Cup Finals Semi-final in Qatar. On the same day, future reds coach Gary O’Neil joined West Ham United from Middlesbrough. He struck three times in 56 outings for the Hammers until being released in June 2013.

Other reds games
1975 – We lost 1-0 at Ipswich Town with Mick Mills nabbing the only goal of our FA Cup Fourth Round tie late on at Portman Road.
1913 – We beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 in a top-flight match in L4 with Tom Miller netting twice.

Young reds in action
2003 - Current and future reds were in action in the Under-17’s UEFA-CAF Meridian Cup in Egypt. David Raven was on target in England’s 3-2 defeat of Burkina Faso in Al-Misry. Meanwhile, future reds defenders Carl Medjani and Arnaud Bühler both featured for their countries. Medjani’s France beat Nigeria 3-2, while Bühler played as Switzerland beat host nation Egypt 2-0.

2009 – Emiliano Insúa skippered Argentina as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Colombia in a Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventud de América” group game in Venezuela.
2007 – Insúa played in the same tournament in a goalless draw with Colombia in Paraguay, with future red Lucas playing for Brazil in the same tournament that day as they beat the host nation 1-0.
1999 – Future red Christian Poulsen won his fourth and last cap for Denmark Under-19’s as they lost 1-0 to the USA in a friendly in Spain.
