Wally Hardinge bagged the last two of his four goals against the reds, with Joe Kitchen netting two of his eight strikes past us. Thumping the Rams 1978 - We trounced an injury-hit Derby County 5-0 at Anfield in a First Division fixture with Ray Kennedy and Kenny Dalglish each netting twice, after David Johnson had grabbed the only goal of the first half. Suspended 1895 – Centre-forward George Allan was suspended for eight matches by the Scottish FA, four months after arriving from Leith Athletic in a £100 deal. This was due to him having also signed for St. Bernard’s at the same time as moving to Anfield! He went on to score 56 goals in 96 reds games across two spells, and also has the distinction of being the first reds player to represent Scotland. Held at Anfield 2006 - Craig Bellamy was on target with a header against his former employers as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Blackburn Rovers at home in the League, after Benni McCarthy had given the visitors a surprise early lead. 2017 – Manchester United left L4 with a point after a disappointing goalless draw. On the same day, Steve Heighway won his second senior cap as the Republic of Ireland were held to a 1-1 draw in a European Championships qualifier at Dalymount Park. Birth of the legend 1913 - Bill Shankly was born in Glenbuck, Ayrshire. He was the ninth of ten children, and the youngest of five boys. Words cannot fully explain his importance to the history of Liverpool Football Club. However, his honours as reds boss between December 1959 and July 1974 included three League titles, two FA Cups, UEFA Cup and the Second Division championship. 1936 - Centre-half John Nicholson was born in Liverpool. He signed as a professional in January 1957, but only made one senior appearance before joining Port Vale in August 1961, playing over 200 games for them. 2001 – Midfielder Jake Cain was born in Wigan. He signed as a professional in September 2019, making his senior debut in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay against Shrewsbury Town in February 2020. Spurs stuffed 1978 - Tottenham Hotspur suffered their worst ever Anfield defeat, despite including their new World Cup winners, Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricky Villa. Kenny Dalglish and substitute David Johnson both grabbed a brace, added to by Ray Kennedy and a twice-taken Phil Neal penalty, before Terry McDermott rounded off a brilliant team move to make it 7-0. Alberto in action 2002 – Future red Alberto Aquilani played for Italy Under-19’s as they lost 1-0 to Turkey. 2005 – He featured for the Under-21’s in their European Championships qualifier against Scotland in Motherwell that ended 2-2 with three players sent off in total. The match was forfeited by the home side and recorded as a 3-0 victory to Italy. Also on the move 1938 – Scottish centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw signed for South Liverpool after four goals in 291 appearances since signing from Bury for £8,000 in January 1930. He was only with South Liverpool for three days while the reds negotiated his £600 transfer to Third Lanark. 1955 – Future reds centre-forward Dave Hickson signed for Aston Villa from Everton for £17,500, netting just once in twelve games before moving to Huddersfield Town for £16,000 two months later. 2011 – Ex-reds defender Stephen Wright signed for Hartlepool United, featuring eleven times for the Monkey Hangers. Other reds games 1980 – We thumped Bradford City 4-0 in a League Cup Second Round second leg at Anfield on our way to claiming the trophy for the first time. Kenny Dalglish struck twice, with Ray Kennedy and David Johnson also scoring. 1967 – Tony Hateley and Roger Hunt struck as we won 2-0 at West Bromwich Albion. 1964 – We came from behind to beat Leeds United 2-1 in L4. Peter Thompson and Tommy Smith were both on the scoresheet. 1933 – We beat Sheffield United 3-2 at Anfield. Sam English added to a Gordon Hodgson brace after Peter Spooner had given the Blades an early lead. Jimmy Dunne bagged one of his eleven goals past us late on after Mick Killourhy had sent a spot-kick wide. The birth of LFC 1892 - Club founder John Houlding signed the Certificate of Change of Name to alter the name of the club residing at Anfield from Everton Football Club and Athletic Grounds Company Limited to Liverpool Football Club and Athletic Grounds Company Limited. We started out in the Lancashire League that September, soon rising through the divisions and heading towards glory. Hola y adiós Rafa 2010 - Rafael Benítez left the club as boss by mutual consent. He had been in charge for six years, leading us to the European Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield during his six seasons in charge as we won 194 of his 350 games as Manager. 2015 - He was appointed Manager of Real Madrid, leading them to seventeen wins in 25 victories but remaining in charge for only seven months. Auf wiedersehen Kev 1977 - Kevin Keegan joined German side Hamburger SV for £500,000, a record fee for a British footballer and the most expensive player to that date in the Bundesliga. He had played 323 reds games and bagged exactly a hundred goals, helping us to claim the European Cup, three League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields. In comes Stéph 1999 - Stéphane Henchoz signed from relegated Blackburn Rovers for £3.5m, two weeks after his future partner Sami Hyypiä arrived from Dutch side Willem II. Stéph failed to score in his 205 reds appearances, but was a defensive rock, helping us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Charity Shield and two League Cups before joining Celtic in January 2005. More red farewells 2012 – Dutch forward Dirk Kuyt was sold to Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü for €1m. He had arrived from Feyenoord for £9m in August 2006, with then Chairman David Moores having to lend the club the money for the transfer. He proved a willing worker, notching 71 times in 285 outings, including our consolation in the Champions League Final in Athens in 2007 and five derby strikes. He helped the club to claim the Carling Cup and reach the FA Cup Final in his final season in England. 1966 – Left-winger George Pither died. He struck once in twelve senior appearances after signing from Merthyr Town for £500 in November 1926, stepping in for the established Fred Hopkin. He moved to Crewe Alexandra in May 1928. 1944 - Right-back Alf West left Anfield for Reading, becoming their club captain but he only stayed for a season before returning to Anfield in May 1910. He struck six times in 141 reds games across two spells at Anfield prior to the First World War, first arriving from Barnsley St. Peter’s in November 1903 for £500. He helped us to the Second Division championship in 1905 and our second League title a year later. He only played five times in this second spell before joining Notts County in July 1911. 1919 - James Scott left the reds to sign for Dumbarton back in his native Scotland, having made just ten senior reds appearances since signing from Ardeer Thistle in 1910. Fourteen without reply 1964 - We trounced a San Franciscan Select 14-0 on our North American tour, our record ever victory in any fixture, shortly after clinching our sixth League title. Alf Arrowsmith and Ian St. John scored four apiece at the Kezar Stadium, with our other goals coming from Alan A’Court, Ian Callaghan, Phil Chisnall, Bobby Graham, Ronnie Moran and Gordon Wallace. Trevor Roberts was in goal after Tommy Lawrence suffered a foot injury in training. Meanwhile, Chairman TV Williams was presented with the League title in London. 1948 - We were also in North America, when Billy Liddell, Jack Balmer, Bob Priday and Les Shannon struck as we beat the Montreal All Stars 4-2 at the Delorimier Stadium. Crouchie’s treble 2006 - Peter Crouch struck three times for England and also missed a penalty in their 6-0 friendly defeat of Jamaica at Old Trafford. This was the third consecutive international in which he had scored, while ex-red Michael Owen was also on target. Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, future reds Joe Cole and Stewart Downing and ex-red David James also featured, with the latter winning his final cap while with Manchester City. Xabi Alonso, Luis García, future reds Philipp Degen and Fernando Torres and ex-red Milan Baroš also turned out in international friendlies that day. 2010 – Alonso also played for Spain as they beat South Korea 1-0 in a friendly in Austria, alongside Pepe Reina. 2012 – Alonso also played alongside fellow ex-reds Álvaro Arbeloa and Fernando Torres in a 1-0 defeat of China in Seville. Meanwhile, Daniel Sjölund featured as Finland lost the Baltic Cup Final to Latvia on penalties in Estonia, while future red Victor Moses was in World Cup qualifying action for Nigeria. Three reds skippers in one day 2003 - Steven Gerrard and future red Joe Cole scored as England beat Serbia & Montenegro 2-1 in a friendly at the Walkers Stadium, with this being Cole’s only goal for his country and last cap as a West Ham United player. Management moves 1986 - 1960’s right-half Gordon Milne stepped down as Manager of Leicester City to become General Manager. He had been in charge for four years, leading them into the top flight in his first season, where they remained during his tenure. 2009 - Jim Magilton was appointed Manager of Queens Park Rangers. He only remained in charge for six months before being suspended after an alleged clash with a player after a game at Watford, following which he left by mutual consent. International first and lasts in friendlies 1982 - Southampton’s Kevin Keegan captained England for the 31st and last time while winning his 62nd cap as they thumped Finland 4-1 in Helsinki. Phil Thompson and ex-red Ray Clemence also played. 1995 - Jason McAteer won his last cap as a Bolton Wanderers player, with skipper Ronnie Whelan winning his first cap while at Southend United, as the Republic of Ireland were held to a goalless draw in a European Championships qualifier in Liechtenstein. Phil Babb and ex-reds John Aldridge and Steve Staunton all also played. 1998 - Dean Saunders won his first cap as a Sheffield United player, and 62nd in total, as Wales won 3-0 in Malta 3-0 with future red Craig Bellamy netting his first goal for his country. On the move 1992 - Ex-reds forward Paul Walsh joined Portsmouth from Tottenham Hotspur for £400,000. He had netted 21 times in 156 games for Spurs. 2011 – Brad Friedel signed for Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer from Aston Villa, having played 131 times for the Villains. 2013 – Left-back Andy Robertson joined Dundee United from Third Division Queens Park, after two goals in 43 outings. 2019 – Keeper David Martin joined West Ham United from Millwall on a free transfer. 2022 – Daniel Sturridge was released by Perth Glory, having failed to score in just six outings as his playing time in Australia was restricted by injuries. Semi-final joy and despair 2001 - We played in our 21st FA Cup Semi-final, beating Wycombe Wanderers 2-1 at Villa Park, with Emile Heskey and Robbie Fowler scoring after the underdogs had kept us out for nearly eighty minutes. Keith Ryan bagged a late consolation for Wanderers. 1981 - We were held to a goalless draw at home by Bayern München in the European Cup with Kurt Niedermayer rattling the crossbar, but we went through on away goals after the return in Germany. This game marked Steve Heighway’s 475th and final reds game, as he came on at half time to replace Terry McDermott, while Graeme Souness missed the match through injury. 1990 - We lost 4-3 to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup, also at Villa Park. This is the furthest we have ever gone in the competition as holders. We went in ahead at half time, thanks to an Ian Rush strike, and in total control, although our goalscorer had gone off injured after half an hour. However, the Eagles came out fighting in the second half. The game ended 3-3 after ninety minutes, with Steve McMahon also on target, and John Barnes scoring from spot. Future Eagles boss Alan Pardew grabbed the dramatic winner in extra time, with Mark Bright, Gary O’Reilly and Andy Gray all also on target for Palace. Tom born 1859 – Tom Watson was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He was appointed as reds boss in July 1896, doubling his salary to £300 a year from his time at Sunderland, whom he had led to three League titles and three FA Cup Semi-finals in four seasons. He went beyond the remit of Club Secretary at Anfield, involving himself in team selection, tactics and player recruitment, so becoming a Manager in all but name. He led the reds to two League titles and the Second Division championship and our first ever FA Cup Final, remaining in charge until his death in May 1915. Through to another semi 2008 - We beat Arsenal 4-2 in the second leg of our Champions League Quarter-final. Abou Diaby put the visitors ahead before Sami Hyypiä and Fernando Torres gave us the lead. Emmanuel Adebayor looked to have sent the Gunners through on the away goals rule after a storming run from Theo Walcott, with one of his five goals past us to date, but moments later Ryan Babel was brought down in the box and Steven Gerrard converted the spot-kick to score in his fourth consecutive home game in Europe, a new club record. Babel then added a fourth in stoppage time. In Bob’s honour 1999 - The Paisley Gateway was officially opened at Anfield by his widow Jessie, three years after Bob’s death, to commemorate his service to the club. As Manager, he won an incredible nineteen trophies in nine seasons. He had also played 277 times in our first team, netting twelve times. Quadruple trebles We have three times bagged hat-tricks on this day over the years. 1933 - Gordon Hodgson grabbed three in a 4-3 defeat of Blackpool, with Dave Wright also on target. Phil Watson bagged a brace for the visitors. 1905 - Jack Parkinson netted a treble in our 8-1 thrashing of Burslem Port Vale at Anfield, with Robert Robinson and Jack Cox adding braces and Sam Raybould also scoring. Defender George Latham made the first of his nineteen reds appearances in this game. 1955 - Ex-red Cyril Done bagged four in our 4-3 defeat at Port Vale, as they were by then known. Eric Anderson, Johnny Evans and Billy Liddell netted our goals. 1899 - Inside-right Johnny Walker struck three times as we beat Derby County 4-0 at Anfield, with Alex Raisbeck also on target. Outside-right Andrew McCowie played his 35th and last reds game. We have also beaten the Rams twice more in First Division matches at Anfield on this day. 1980 – David Johnson netted while playing his hundredth League game for the reds as we won 3-0, with Colin Irwin scoring and Keith Osgood putting through his own net. 1939 - Phil Taylor bagged a brace in a 2-1 victory, with Dave McCulloch netting the last of his seven goals against us. Heading to another European semi 2010 - We faced SL Benfica for the tenth time in European competition, a joint club record along with Chelsea. We overcame a first leg deficit in our UEFA Europa League Quarter-final by winning 4-1 at Anfield. Dirk Kuyt headed us in front from a corner before Lucas Leiva bagged the second. Fernando Torres then struck a brace either side of Óscar Cardozo’s consolation, so becoming the first red ever to net twice in four consecutive home games. For Gerry 1970 - A testimonial match was staged for Gerry Byrne with the reds drawing 8-8 with an All Star XI at Anfield. Bobby Graham, Chris Lawler and Ian St. John each netted a brace, with Roger Hunt and Willie Stevenson also on target. Steve Heighway played his first reds game and was so unfamiliar with his surroundings that he asked a member of the opposition which end was the Kop! Sammy starts off with a bang 1978 - Sammy Lee scored on his reds debut as a substitute for David Johnson, who tore his knee ligaments, in our 3-2 home League win over Leicester City. Tommy Smith nabbed both our other goals, his final reds strikes. Brian’s ton up 1974 – Brian Hall played his hundredth League game as we lost 1-0 at Sheffield United, with Terry Nicholl on target and Ray Clemence saving a penalty from Keith Eddy. Beaten by the Blues 2009 – We lost 3-1 at home to Chelsea in the first leg of our Champions League Quarter-final after Fernando Torres had handed us the lead, to suffer our only defeat of the season at Anfield. Branislav Ivanović twice headed in when unmarked at set pieces, with Didier Drogba rounding off the scoring late on with one of his eleven goals past us to equal our worst ever home defeat in European competition. Pepe Reina played his fiftieth European Cup game. Three off the mark 1912 – American outside-left Hugh Lester and James Scott both debuted as we won 2-0 at Bradford City in a top-flight fixture, with the former becoming the first player born outside of the British Isles to play for the reds. Forward James Speakman grabbed his only reds goal with Sam Gilligan also on the scoresheet as Dickie Bond missed a penalty for the home side. Red beginnings and ends 1944 - Outside-left Hugh McQueen died in Norwich. He had made 61 reds appearances after signing from Leith Athletic in October 1892, bagging eighteen goals and helping us to the Lancashire League and Second Division titles in successive seasons before joining Derby County in July 1895. 1889 - Inside-forward Arthur Metcalf was born in Seaham, County Durham. He signed from Newcastle United for £150 in May 1912 and netted 28 times in 63 reds games, playing in every position on the park. Most recently 2015 - Philippe Coutinho bagged the only goal of our FA Cup Sixth Round replay at Blackburn Rovers. Sadly, we crashed out to Aston Villa in the subsequent Semi-final at Wembley. 2017 – We won 2-1 at Stoke City’s rechristened bet365 Stadium, despite falling behind to the last of Jon Walters’ seven goals past us on the stroke of half time. The Brazilian pair Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino both came off the bench to score within two minutes of each other to hand us victory. Souey in charge 1986 - Graeme Souness joined Rangers as Player/Manager from Sampdoria for £300,000, scoring three times in 73 outings and leading them to three League titles and four League Cups. Mixed fortunes against Oldham We have faced Oldham Athletic three times on this day in history. 1911 - Sam Gilligan netted the only goal of our top-flight meeting at Anfield, with centre-half Jimmy Harrop playing his hundredth League game for the reds. 1916 - Dave Watson struck our consolation as we lost a Wartime League match 2-1 at Boundary Park. 1922 - We were thumped 4-0 away from home in another First Division meeting, on the way to our third League title, with left-half Tom Bromilow away on international duty. Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers played his hundredth League game for the reds as Jack Marshall bagged a treble for the home side, the last of his five goals past us, with Reuben Butler also scoring. Beating the Owls 1989 - We thumped Sheffield Wednesday 5-1 in a top-flight encounter at Anfield that kicked off at 11:30am due to it being Grand National day. Peter Beardsley was on target twice, with Steve McMahon, Ray Houghton and John Barnes also netting. This remains our joint record victory over the Hillsborough outfit. 1896 - We also beat the Owls, with Clarke netting the only goal of our friendly against The Wednesday at Anfield. Disappointment at St. James’ Park We have twice visited Newcastle United on this day in history. 1950 - Willie Fagan grabbed our consolation as we were thumped 5-1 in a top-flight match. Robert Mitchell bagged two of his eight goals against the reds, with Ernest Taylor netting the first of his five past us, with Tommy Walker and George Hannah also on target. 1893 - Our friendly ended goalless. Derby stalemate 1963 - Our top-flight trip to Goodison Park ended without score, with right-half Gordon Milne reaching a century of reds games. International beginnings 1992 - Myllykosken Pallo-47’s Sami Hyypiä won his first Under-21’s cap for Finland as they drew 1-1 in a friendly in Poland. 2007 – Future reds reserves forward Nikola Sarić won his only official cap for Denmark Under-16’s, netting in their 3-2 defeat by Georgia in Portugal. 2009 – Conor Coady played for England Under-16’s for the first time as they beat Russia 3-1 in the Montaigu Tournament.
