The birth of LFC
1892 - Club founder John Houlding signed the Certificate of Change of Name to alter the name of the club residing at Anfield from Everton Football Club and Athletic Grounds Company Limited to Liverpool Football Club and Athletic Grounds Company Limited. We started out in the Lancashire League that September, soon rising through the divisions and heading towards glory.

Hola y adiós Rafa
2010 - Rafael Benítez left the club as boss by mutual consent. He had been in charge for six years, leading us to the European Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield during his six seasons in charge as we won 194 of his 350 games as Manager.
2015 - He was appointed Manager of Real Madrid, leading them to seventeen wins in 25 victories but remaining in charge for only seven months.

Auf wiedersehen Kev
1977 - Kevin Keegan joined German side Hamburger SV for £500,000, a record fee for a British footballer and the most expensive player to that date in the Bundesliga. He had played 323 reds games and bagged exactly a hundred goals, helping us to claim the European Cup, three League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields.

In comes Stéph
1999 - Stéphane Henchoz signed from relegated Blackburn Rovers for £3.5m, two weeks after his future partner Sami Hyypiä arrived from Dutch side Willem II. Stéph failed to score in his 205 reds appearances, but was a defensive rock, helping us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Charity Shield and two League Cups before joining Celtic in January 2005.

More red farewells
2012 – Dutch forward Dirk Kuyt was sold to Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü for €1m. He had arrived from Feyenoord for £9m in August 2006, with then Chairman David Moores having to lend the club the money for the transfer. He proved a willing worker, notching 71 times in 285 outings, including our consolation in the Champions League Final in Athens in 2007 and five derby strikes. He helped the club to claim the Carling Cup and reach the FA Cup Final in his final season in England.

1966 – Left-winger George Pither died. He struck once in twelve senior appearances after signing from Merthyr Town for £500 in November 1926, stepping in for the established Fred Hopkin. He moved to Crewe Alexandra in May 1928.
1944 - Right-back Alf West left Anfield for Reading, becoming their club captain but he only stayed for a season before returning to Anfield in May 1910. He struck six times in 141 reds games across two spells at Anfield prior to the First World War, first arriving from Barnsley St. Peter’s in November 1903 for £500. He helped us to the Second Division championship in 1905 and our second League title a year later. He only played five times in this second spell before joining Notts County in July 1911.
1919 - James Scott left the reds to sign for Dumbarton back in his native Scotland, having made just ten senior reds appearances since signing from Ardeer Thistle in 1910.

Fourteen without reply
1964 - We trounced a San Franciscan Select 14-0 on our North American tour, our record ever victory in any fixture, shortly after clinching our sixth League title. Alf Arrowsmith and Ian St. John scored four apiece at the Kezar Stadium, with our other goals coming from Alan A’Court, Ian Callaghan, Phil Chisnall, Bobby Graham, Ronnie Moran and Gordon Wallace. Trevor Roberts was in goal after Tommy Lawrence suffered a foot injury in training. Meanwhile, Chairman TV Williams was presented with the League title in London.
1948 - We were also in North America, when Billy Liddell, Jack Balmer, Bob Priday and Les Shannon struck as we beat the Montreal All Stars 4-2 at the Delorimier Stadium.

Crouchie’s treble
2006 - Peter Crouch struck three times for England and also missed a penalty in their 6-0 friendly defeat of Jamaica at Old Trafford. This was the third consecutive international in which he had scored, while ex-red Michael Owen was also on target. Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, future reds Joe Cole and Stewart Downing and ex-red David James also featured, with the latter winning his final cap while with Manchester City. Xabi Alonso, Luis García, future reds Philipp Degen and Fernando Torres and ex-red Milan Baroš also turned out in international friendlies that day.
2010 – Alonso also played for Spain as they beat South Korea 1-0 in a friendly in Austria, alongside Pepe Reina.
2012 – Alonso also played alongside fellow ex-reds Álvaro Arbeloa and Fernando Torres in a 1-0 defeat of China in Seville. Meanwhile, Daniel Sjölund featured as Finland lost the Baltic Cup Final to Latvia on penalties in Estonia, while future red Victor Moses was in World Cup qualifying action for Nigeria.

Three reds skippers in one day
2003 - Steven Gerrard and future red Joe Cole scored as England beat Serbia & Montenegro 2-1 in a friendly at the Walkers Stadium, with this being Cole’s only goal for his country and last cap as a West Ham United player. Michael Owen, Emile Heskey and Jamie Carragher all captained the side at some point during the game, as did Manchester United’s Phil Neville, with ex-red David James also playing.

International debutants
1995 - John Scales and future red Stan Collymore both made their England debuts as they beat Japan 2-1 at Wembley. They both only won a further two caps apiece. Steve McManaman and ex-red Peter Beardsley also played that day.
1991 - Future reds winger Mark Walters won his only full international cap for England as they beat New Zealand 1-0 in a friendly in Auckland.

1984 - Jim Beglin made his Republic of Ireland bow in their 1-0 defeat of China in Sapporo, Japan. He went on to win fifteen full caps before injury curtailed his career.
2011 - Krisztián Németh won his first cap as an Olympiacos player, and second to date, as Hungary won a friendly 1-0 in Luxembourg as keeper Ádám Bogdán made his senior international bow. Alberto Aquilani, future reds Fabio Borini, Ragnar Klavan, Simon Mignolet and Mamadou Sakho and ex-reds Alou Diarra and Daniel Sjölund all featured in Euro 2012 qualifiers that day.
2016 - Wataru Endō won his first cap as a Urawa Red Diamonds player in Japan’s 7-2 thumping of Bulgaria in Toyota.

In the World Cup
1978 - Kenny Dalglish played for Scotland as they lost 3-1 to Peru in Argentina.
1986 - Future red Peter Beardsley appeared in England’s 1-0 defeat by Portugal in Mexico.

Reds internationals on target
2000 - Emile Heskey netted in England’s 2-1 friendly win in Malta. Ex-red Paul Ince won his fiftieth cap, while Robbie Fowler, future red Nick Barmby and ex-red Steve McManaman all also featured for Kevin Keegan’s side. Meanwhile, Patrik Berger was on target as the Czech Republic lost 3-2 to Germany in a friendly in Nuremberg. Dietmar Hamann, Vladimír Šmicer and future reds Markus Babbel and Christian Ziege all also played. Stig Inge Bjørnebye, Titi Camara, Vegard Heggem, Sami Hyypiä and future reds John Arne Riise and Jari Litmanen all also played for their countries that day.
2021 – Future red Luis Díaz struck as Colombia 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Peru. On the same day, Ozan Kabak won his last cap while on loan with the reds in Turkey’s 2-0 friendly defeat of Moldova in Germany. Xherdan Shaqiri, Kostas Tsimikas and ex-reds Simon Mignolet and Luis Suárez all also played to their countries.

1987 - Jan Mølby netted his second and final international goal as Denmark were held 1-1 at home by Czechoslovakia in a European Championships qualifier, with Glenn Hysén also featuring in a qualifier that day.
1989 - John Barnes got on the scoresheet as England beat Poland 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley. Peter Beardsley also featured.
2005 - Carl Medjani struck as he captained France Under-20’s to a 2-1 defeat of Japan in the Toulon tournament in Hyères. Darren Potter was also in action that day, for the Irish Under-21’s.
2013 – Ex-red Alexander Kačaniklić scored the only goal of Sweden’s friendly against FYR Macedonia in Malmo.
2014 – Future red Xherdan Shaqiri netted as Switzerland beat Peru 2-0 in Lucerne, with ex-reds loanee Victor Moses also in international action.
2016 – Shaqiri played for his country again, as the Swiss beat Moldova 2-1 in a friendly in Lugano.
2018 – Roberto Firmino was on target as Brazil beat Croatia 2-0 in a friendly at Anfield, with Dejan Lovren, future red Alisson Becker and ex-red Philippe Coutinho all also in action. On the same day, ex-red Iago Aspas and future red Thiago Alcântara faced future red Xherdan Shaqiri as Spain drew 1-1 with Switzerland in Villarreal, with Liam Millar also playing for his country.

Management moves
1986 - 1960’s right-half Gordon Milne stepped down as Manager of Leicester City to become General Manager. He had been in charge for four years, leading them into the top flight in his first season, where they remained during his tenure.
2009 - Jim Magilton was appointed Manager of Queens Park Rangers. He only remained in charge for six months before being suspended after an alleged clash with a player after a game at Watford, following which he left by mutual consent.

International first and lasts in friendlies
1982 - Southampton’s Kevin Keegan captained England for the 31st and last time while winning his 62nd cap as they thumped Finland 4-1 in Helsinki. Phil Thompson and ex-red Ray Clemence also played.
1995 - Jason McAteer won his last cap as a Bolton Wanderers player, with skipper Ronnie Whelan winning his first cap while at Southend United, as the Republic of Ireland were held to a goalless draw in a European Championships qualifier in Liechtenstein. Phil Babb and ex-reds John Aldridge and Steve Staunton all also played.

1998 - Dean Saunders won his first cap as a Sheffield United player, and 62nd in total, as Wales won 3-0 in Malta 3-0 with future red Craig Bellamy netting his first goal for his country. Future red Paul Jones also played. On the same day, ex-reserves midfielder Jim Magilton won his last cap as a Sheffield Wednesday player, and 39th in total, as Northern Ireland lost 4-1 in Spain, with future red Fernando Morientes bagging a brace.
1992 - Saunders had also played for Wales as they lost 1-0 to Argentina in Japan. John Barnes, Mark Wright and future reds and Stig Inge Bjørnebye, Øyvind Leonhardsen, Jari Litmanen, Gary McAllister and Torben Piechnik also represented their countries on that day.
2019 – Keeper Caoimhín Kelleher played for the Republic of Ireland Under-21’s as they beat China Under-22’s 4-1 in a friendly in France. Future red Ibrahima Konaté played for France at the same level that day, as they beat Belgium 3-0 in Le Mans, while Porto’s Luis Díaz featured as Colombia beat Panama 3-0 in a friendly in Bogota and Club Atlético Peñarol’s Darwin Núñez played for Uruguay Under-20’s in their 3-1 defeat by Ecuador in the World Championship Finals in Poland.

Friendly victory
1984 - We beat Tottenham Hotspur 5-2 in the first leg of the Royal Swazi Sun Soccer Challenge at the Somhlolu Stadium in Swaziland. Ian Rush and South African-born Craig Johnston both netted braces, with Paul Walsh also grabbing a goal.

Champions
1991 - Future reds keeper David James played as England Under-21’s beat hosts France in the Final of the Toulon Tournament.
2022 - Thiago Alcântara’s long-range strike against Porto at Anfield was voted as the UEFA Champions League Goal of the Tournament.

On the move
1992 - Ex-reds forward Paul Walsh joined Portsmouth from Tottenham Hotspur for £400,000. He had netted 21 times in 156 games for Spurs.
2011 – Brad Friedel signed for Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer from Aston Villa, having played 131 times for the Villains.
2013 – Left-back Andy Robertson joined Dundee United from Third Division Queens Park, after two goals in 43 outings.
2019 – Keeper David Martin joined West Ham United from Millwall on a free transfer.
2022 – Daniel Sturridge was released by Perth Glory, having failed to score in just six outings as his playing time in Australia was restricted by injuries.

Also in international action
2022 – Virgil van Dijk faced ex-red Simon Mignolet as the Netherlands won a UEFA Nations League group game 4-1 in Belgium. Curtis Jones featured as England Under-21’s won a European Championships qualifier 2-1 in the Czech Republic.
2017 – Ex-red Bernard Diomède managed France Under-18’s as they were thumped 4-0 by Serbia.
2015 – Future red Marko Grujić played for Serbia Under-20’s in their 2-0 defeat of Mali in a World Championships Finals group game in New Zealand.
2008 – Ex-red Nicolas Anelka appeared in France’s 1-0 friendly defeat of Colombia at the Stade de France.
2007 – Ex-red Rigobert Song played for Cameroon in their 2-1 win in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Liberia.

2005 – Arsenal’s Kolo Touré featured as Ivory Coast shared a goalless World Cup qualifier with Libya in Tripoli.
2004 – Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both featured as France Under-21’s were held to a goalless draw by China in the Toulon Tournament.
2001 – Future red Nicolas Anelka played in France’s 4-0 thumping of Mexico in a Confederations Cup group game in South Korea. Future red Kolo Touré played for Ivory Coast on the same day in their 1-0 Africa Cup in Nations qualifying win in Libya.
1998 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Claudio Taffarel played for Brazil in their 1-1 draw with France in the Tournoi de France in Lyon.
1997 – Taffarel again represented his country as they beat Andorra 3-0 in Paris.

1994 – Roy Hodgson managed Switzerland as they lost a friendly 1-0 to Italy in Rome.
1981 – Glenn Hysén played for Sweden in their 1-0 World Cup qualifying defeat of Northern Ireland in Solna.
1977 – Joey Jones appeared for Wales as they held Northern Ireland to a 1-1 draw in the British International Championships in Belfast.
1959 – Andy Beattie took charge of Scotland as they lost a friendly 1-0 in Portugal. He guested for the reds at full-back during the Second World War, and later spent some time on our backroom staff.
