He signed from Chelsea for £12m in January 2013, netting an impressive 67 times in 160 reds games before being released in June 2019. 2013 – He scored the only goal of David Moyes’ Manchester United’s League visit to Anfield in just the fourth minute. 1993 – Ex-reds left-back Jack Robinson was born in Warrington. He became the club’s then youngest ever player when he debuted at Hull City in May 2010 aged just sixteen years and 250 days. He was sold to Queens Park Rangers in August 2014, scoring twice in 39 outings before moving on to Nottingham Forest in June 2018. 2006 – Midfielder Afolami Onanuga was born. He joined the reds as an Under-11, turning pro in November 2023. The very beginning 1892 - We played our first ever game, beating reigning Midland League champions Rotherham Town 7-1 in a friendly that kicked off at Anfield at 5.30pm on a Thursday evening. 1894 - We played our first ever First Division game, drawing 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers, with Harry Bradshaw putting the reds in front before Coombe Hall equalised for the home side. Unfortunately, we were relegated at the end of the season. Outside-left John Drummond played the first of eighteen senior reds games, with keeper Bill McCann making the first of his seventeen outings. Rams hit for six 2007 - Ryan Babel scored his first reds goal as we thumped Derby County 6-0 at Anfield to go into the international break on top of the table for the first time in five seasons. Xabi Alonso and Fernando Torres each bagged a brace, with Andriy Voronin also on target. Birth of the Kop 1906 - Joe Hewitt bagged the only goal of our game against Stoke at Anfield as the Kop stand was used for the first time, in scorching temperatures, although it was not yet known by that name. After the previous season’s title success, the board had decided to demolish what was known as the Oakfield Road Embankment, or Walton Breck Road End, and replace it with a huge bank of rubble and cinders. Germany 1 Liverpool 5 2001 - All of England's goals in their sensational 5-1 win over Germany in Munich were scored by reds. Michael Owen grabbed a hat-trick, with Steven Gerrard nabbing his first international goal and Emile Heskey also on target. Dietmar Hamann was on the losing side, while Nick Barmby, Jamie Carragher and ex-red Steve McManaman all also appeared. Meanwhile, future reds forward Fernando Morientes bagged a brace as Spain beat Austria 4-0 in their qualifying encounter in Valencia. 2007 – Future red Mamadou Sakho scored in the penalty shoot-out as France Under-17’s lost 5-4 to Spain in their World Championship Finals Quarter-final after the game itself ended 1-1 in South Korea. Keeping debuts 1904 - Ned Doig became our oldest ever debutant, aged 37 years and 307 days, when he played in our 2-0 opening day home defeat of Burton United in the Second Division, thanks to a Robbie Robinson brace. Half-back Jimmy Hughes and left-back David Murray both also played their first reds games. 1912 - Elisha Scott signed for the reds. He played 468 times in eighteen seasons at Anfield, winning two League titles before joining Belfast Celtic as Player/Manager in June 1934. Crossing the park 1962 - Winger Johnny Morrissey was sold to Everton for £10,000. He had signed on as a professional in April 1957, netting six times in 37 reds games. He scored fifty goals in 314 appearances for the Blues, helping them to two League titles. Facing the Foxes 2018 – New keeper Alisson Becker was robbed while trying to play out from the back leading to Rachid Ghezzal’s consolation as we won 2-1 at Leicester City. Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino had both struck before the break to give us a two-goal lead. James Milner reached a century of League games for the reds. 1973 – We drew a top-flight encounter 1-1 at Filbert Street. John Toshack headed us into the lead after the break, but Alan Birchenall equalised with the last of his four goals against us. Red arrivals 1910 - William Stuart signed from Bolton Wanderers. He scored once in five outings, moving on to Wrexham in 1912. 1994 - Phil Babb signed from Coventry City for a club record £3.6m, also a British record fee for a defender. Farewell Welfare 1966 – Forward Harry Welfare died in Angra dos Reis, Brazil. He joined the reds from Northern Nomads in 1912, notching once in four outings before signing for Wrexham the following year. He later had a very successful career in Brazil, helping Fluminense to claim the title three times in succession while bagging 163 goals in just 166 games. 1933 – Scottish outside-right Danny McRorie joined Millwall on trial, moving on permanently to Rochdale a month later. He had bagged six goals in 35 reds games after signing from Morton for £1,500 in November 1930. Tommy Robertson, Charlie Satterthwaite and Sam Raybould struck the goals as Alex Raisbeck captained the side at the age of just 21 years and 249 years, remaining the club’s youngest ever captain until Curtis Jones in February 2020. 1937 – Forward Ted Harston scored his final two reds goals in our 3-2 home defeat of Portsmouth. Berry Nieuwenhuys also struck for the reds, with Jock Anderson bagging the first two of his four goals past us. 1951 – Inside-forward Willie Fagan played his 182nd and final reds game as we beat Huddersfield Town 2-1 in a First Division fixture at Anfield. Billy Liddell and Kevin Baron struck our goals, while Vic Metcalfe netted one of his six strikes against the reds. Centre-backs off the mark against the Saints 1979 - Colin Irwin scored his first senior reds goal, although it was not enough to prevent us going down to a 3-2 League defeat at The Dell, with David Johnson grabbing our other goal. Charlie George scored the last of his five goals past us, with Phil Boyer and Trevor Hebberd also on target for the home side. 1992 - Mark Wright struck his first reds goal, in a 1-1 draw at home to his former club Southampton after Kerry Dixon had put the visitors in front with his seventh and final goal against the reds. UEFA President Lennart Johansson officially opened the Centenary Stand prior to the game. 1993 - Phil Babb scored his first Coventry City goal in their 1-0 defeat of the reds at Highfield Road, as Rob Jones was sent off for receiving two yellow cards in the space of three minutes. David Burrows played his 193rd and final reds game, against one of his future employers. Hat-tricks against We conceded three hat-tricks on this day in the 1930’s. 1930 - Vic Watson netted the last four of his nine goals past us as we were crushed 7-0 at West Ham United in a game that kicked off at 6pm. Stan Earle grabbed the final two of his four strikes against the reds, with Wilfred James also scoring as keeper Arthur Riley reached a century of reds outings. 1934 - Ted Drake and Ray Bowden both grabbed trebles as we were humbled 8-1 at Arsenal who were on their way to a third consecutive League title, with outside-left Alf Hanson grabbing our consolation and Drake having another effort ruled out for a push. Cliff Bastin scored the final goal of his four against us, with Jack Crayston also netting. 1919 - We also faced the Gunners, when Harry Chambers and Fred Pagnam scored in a 3-2 home defeat. Bert White bagged a brace, with Billy Blyth also netting for the visitors. Alou and goodbye 2003 - Alou Diarra joined Bastia on loan. He eventually left Anfield permanently to join Racing Club de Lens for £2m in June 2005, without ever playing a first-class reds game. 2016 - Diarra had his contract with Charlton Athletic terminated by mutual consent after one goal in 45 outings, signing for AS Nancy-Lorraine on the same day. On the same day, Harry Wilson played for Wales for the first time since joining Fulham, having a penalty saved as they drew a friendly 0-0 with Finland in Helsinki. Future red Melkamu Frauendorf debuted for Germany Under-18’s in their 2-09 defeat of Slovakia. Sadio Mané netted as Senegal beat Togo 2-0 in the World Cup while Andy Robertson captained Steve Clarke’s Scotland as they lost a qualifier 2-0 in Denmark. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain played for England for the first time since moving to Anfield, in their 4-0 World Cup qualifying win in Malta. Meanwhile, Andy Robertson won his first cap as a reds player, scoring in Scotland’s 3-0 win in Lithuania, with Dominic Solanke playing for England Under-21’s for the first time since moving to Anfield and Rhian Brewster winning his only England Under-18’s cap. Other international reds 2001 - Don Hutchison won his first cap as a West Ham United player as Scotland were held to a goalless draw by Croatia at Hampden Park. Igor Bišcan won his fifteenth and final cap in this game with ex-red Dominic Matteo also featuring. Jerzy Dudek won his first cap as a red in Poland’s 3-0 defeat of Norway in Chorzów, with Everton’s Thomas Myhre at the other end, the first time two Merseyside keepers had been in international opposition since May 1979. Meanwhile, Jason McAteer netted the only goal of the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup qualifying defeat of the Netherlands at Lansdowne Road. On the move 2005 - Bjørn Tore Kvarme re-signed for Rosenborg BK, having left Bastia earlier in the year. He retired from the game in June 2008. 2017 – Keeper David Martin signed for Millwall, only making one senior appearance in his first campaign with the Lions. 2020 – Young keeper Kai McKenzie-Lyle signed for Cambridge United, having been released by the reds three months earlier. On the same day, centre-half Rhys Williams signed a new contract while Chief Commercial Officer Billy Hogan took over as Chief Executive Officer. Other reds games 1984 – Queens Park Rangers held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Ronnie Whelan was on target, with Paul Walsh having two goals disallowed. 1981 – Middlesbrough left L4 with a point. David Shearer bagged one of his four goals against the reds, with Phil Neal equalising from the spot. 1956 – We beat Grimsby Town 3-2 in a home Second Division encounter. Louis Bimpson struck twice, with Alan Arnell also on target as Bob Crosbie netted a brace for the visitors. 1954 – Plymouth Argyle held us to a 3-3 draw in the Second Division at Anfield. The glory of Istanbul 2005 - We claimed the European Cup for the fifth time as we came from 3-0 down against the mighty AC Milan in Istanbul to triumph after a penalty shoot-out. Paolo Maldini scored before Hernan Crespo bagged a brace, with the reds having a strong penalty claim for handball turned down as well as losing Harry Kewell to injury half-way through the first period. The fans and team inspired each other in the second half as we began our comeback through skipper Steven Gerrard, whose goal was the only header of that season’s victorious European campaign. Vladimír Šmicer then struck his nineteenth reds goal in his 184th and final game for the club, before Xabi Alonso saw his penalty saved but tucked away the rebound, just six minutes after Gerrard’s goal. We hung on to the 3-3 scoreline through the rest of normal and extra time, with Jerzy Dudek making an incredible double save from Andriy Shevchenko. An amazing night was completed as we won the penalty shoot-out 3-2, with Dietmar Hamann, Djibril Cissé and Šmicer converting their spot-kicks and Dudek dancing on the goal-line. The glory that was Rome 1977 – This day brought one of only a couple of other days that can vie with Istanbul as the most glorious day in our history, as we claimed the European Cup for the first time. Our opponents were Borussia Mönchengladbach, who we had beaten in the UEFA Cup Final four years earlier. Rainer Bonhof hit the post for the Germans before Terry McDermott opened the scoring after half an hour, although Alan Simonsen equalised shortly after half-time, capitalising on a loose Jimmy Case back-pass. After sustaining heavy German pressure, we regained the lead when Tommy Smith rose to head in magnificently from a corner, in what was then assumed to be his final outing. Seven minutes from time, Kevin Keegan, playing in his 323rd and last reds match, was felled by Berti Vogts in the area, and Phil Neal stepped up to convert from the spot. Then the party could really start. This game remains our only other first-class game on this day in history. Heading off 2006 - Fernando Morientes was sold to Valencia for a reported £3m after twelve goals in 61 reds games. He had joined for £6.3m from Real Madrid in January 2005, but failed to fully convince in a reds shirt. However, he did help us to claim the FA Cup and UEFA Super Cup in his time at Anfield. 1954 – Utility player Bill Jones’s contract with the reds expired. He signed from Hayfield St. Matthews in September 1938 and scored seventeen times in 277 games for us, with his appearances including the 1950 FA Cup Final when he was preferred to Bob Paisley. Bill won two significant medals in the 1940’s - first he was awarded a Military Medal for his part in the crossing of the Rhine in the Second World War, and then he won a League title medal in 1947 on his return to Anfield. He later scouted for the reds while his grandson Rob represented the club in defence on 243 occasions in the 1990’s. Mighty Mouse starts out 1971 - Kevin Keegan played his first reds game as we lost 3-2 at Danish side AGF Århus, with Bobby Graham and Jack Whitham netting our goals. Births and deaths 1999 – Centre-half Ibrahima Konaté was born in Paris. He signed from RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. for £36m in July 2021, notching three times in ninety outings before his 25th birthday, already helping us to claim the FA Cup and two League Cups. 1994 – Reserves forward Samed Yeşil was born in Dusseldorf. He signed for a reported £1m from Bayer 04 Leverkusen in August 2012, making two senior reds appearances before being released in June 2016. 1974 – Former sub keeper Robbie Holcroft was born in Skelmersdale. He sat on our bench five times in the early 1990’s. 1948 – Inside-forward Charlie Satterthwaite died. He signed from Burton Swifts in December 1899, bagging thirteen goals in 45 outings before moving to New Brompton in 1902 after helping us to claim the League title the year before. 1899 – Scottish left-half Jim McBride died in Manchester, aged just 25. He struck seven times in 56 games, helping us to the Second Division title in 1894 after signing from Renton in June 1892. He moved on to Ardwick in December 1894. 1890 – Scottish keeper Frank Mitchell was born in Elgin, Morayshire. He signed from Everton for £1,250 in February 1921, playing eighteen times before joining Tranmere Rovers in June 1923 after failing to permanently displace the great Elisha Scott. Thumped in Blackpool 1942 - We were trounced 8-2 at Blackpool in a Wartime League game. Billy Liddell converted a penalty, with Cyril Done also netting. Friendly scorers 2001 - Robbie Fowler was on target in England’s 4-0 friendly defeat of Mexico at Pride Park as future red Joe Cole won his first cap. Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, Emile Heskey and Michael Owen all also featured, while David James made his last appearance as an Aston Villa player. Future red Djibril Cissé and ex-red Rigobert Song also played for their countries that day. 2008 – Future red Luis Suárez bagged a brace, including a penalty, as Uruguay beat Turkey 3-2 in a friendly in Germany. 2016 - Marko Grujić won his first senior cap for Serbia as they beat Cyprus 2-1 in a friendly in Užice. On the same day, future red Takumi Minamino netted for Japan Under-23’s as they beat Guinea 2-1 in a friendly in France. Digger for England John Barnes twice played for his country on this day in history. 1985 – England lost 1-0 to Scotland in the Rous Cup at Hampden Park, while he was still a Watford player. Defensive signings 1979 - Centre-back Dave Watson signed as an apprentice. Unlike his brother Alex, he never played a senior reds game, and found greater success across the park. 1903 – Full-back Joseph Hoare arrived from Southampton for £75, playing just seven times before returning to the Saints a year later. 1894 - Full-back Abel Hughes signed for the reds. He too never made a first-team appearance. On the same day, Scottish keeper Bill McCann arrived from Abercorn, playing seventeen times before moving on the following March. Flo on target 2006 - Florent Sinama-Pongolle netted for France Under-21’s in their 3-0 defeat of Germany in a European Championships Finals group game in Portugal. Also in international action that day were Jamie Carragher, Scott Carson, Peter Crouch, future reds Joe Cole and Raul Meireles, and ex-reds David James, Jari Litmanen and Michael Owen, with Roy Hodgson taking charge of Finland. 2007 - Carson and ex-red Owen both featured for England B in their 3-1 defeat of Albania at Turf Moor. A Hungarian double 2007 - It was announced that forwards Krisztián Németh and András Simon would both sign from MTK Hungária for around £1m. Both left the club in 2010 without having made the first team. On the move 2007 - Gérard Houllier resigned as Manager of Olympique Lyonnais after two years in charge, in which time he had led them to their fifth and sixth consecutive Ligue 1 titles as well as the knock-out stages of the Champions League. Liddell’s last 1960 - Billy Liddell scored his 228th and final reds goal, becoming our oldest post-war goalscorer, aged 38 years 55 days. We beat Stoke City 5-1 in the Second Division at Anfield, with Jimmy Harrower adding a brace, and Roger Hunt and Dave Hickson also netting. Hickson was in fact on target for the fourth consecutive match, in which time he had struck six times in total. A new boss 1951 – Don Welsh was officially appointed Manager. His contract awarded him £1,500 per year, with an additional annual £500 for expenses. He took charge of 232 reds games, winning just 81, and has the indignity of being our first boss to get the sack, after presiding over our relegation from the top flight in 1954, and failing to lead us back to the promised land. A manc thrashing 2023 – We secured our record victory over Manchester United, thumping them 7-0 at Anfield, their joint worst ever defeat. Cody Gakpo gave us the lead shortly before the break, but the floodgates opened in the second half. Darwin Núñez headed in before Gakpo netted again. Mohamed Salah bagged a brace as he became our all-time top Premier League goalscorer. Núñez nodded in again, with Roberto Firmino completing the scoring. Fernando’s treble 2008 - Fernando Torres scored a hat-trick as we thumped West Ham United 4-0 at Anfield, with Steven Gerrard completing the scoring. Crazy Horse OBE 1980 - Emlyn Hughes was presented with the OBE by Her Majesty the Queen. ‘Crazy Horse’ played 665 times in his twelve years at Anfield, netting 49 times and winning two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields. His greatest season was probably 1976/77 when he captained the side to within a whisker of the treble, as well as being voted the Football Writers’ Player of the Year. Inside-forward Harry Lewis scored in his fourth consecutive game, while Arthur Metcalf was also on the scoresheet. Young champions 2010 – England Under-17’s won the Algarve Tournament after holding Portugal to a goalless draw. Conor Coady skippered the side, with Jack Robinson, Andre Wisdom and future red Conor Thomas also playing. A century on the south coast 2000 - We took part in a friendly at Bournemouth to commemorate the Cherries’ centenary year. Richie Partridge, Patrik Berger, Danny Murphy and Titi Camara all netted in our 4-0 win at Dean Court. On the same day, Brad Friedel played for the USA as they beat Peru 1-0 in a Gold Cup game in Miami. Roy in charge 1994 - Roy Evans had his first game in charge following the departure of Graeme Souness as Manager. He did not get off to an auspicious start, as we needed an Ian Culverhouse own goal to help secure a point at Norwich City, with John Barnes bagging our late leveller as we drew 2-2. City keeper Bryan Gunn was sent off for handling outside the area in the final minute, with Chris Sutton nabbing the first two of his seven goals against us. Despite admitting that Bruce Grobbelaar had not been at fault for either goal, a certain tabloid rag later alleged that he had failed to throw the game as planned, by making an ‘accidental’ save. Pepe off 2006 - Pepe Reina was sent off at Chelsea after clashing with Arjen Robben as we were beaten 2-0. Luis García came on as a substitute and was later himself substituted. Reds boss Benítez commented after that game, “I'm in a hurry and I must go to the hospital to see how Robben is, he could be in hospital for a week,” following his theatrics. William Gallas and Hernán Crespo struck for the home side. Happy birthday Pako 1963 - Former Assistant Manager Pako Ayestarán was born in Spain. He had also served in that role under Rafael Benítez at Valencia, as well as working as their fitness coach. He is now Assistant Head Coach of Aston Villa. 1884 – Centre-half Jimmy Harrop was born in Heeley, Sheffield. He joined the reds for £250 from Rotherham Town in January 1908, notching four goals in 139 games before joining Aston Villa for £600 in June 1912, with whom he won the FA Cup the following year. 2002 – Forward Fidel O’Rourke was born in Liverpool. He joined the reds at Under-14’s level, staying on the bench as we won the FA Youth Cup in 2019. 1987 - Ex-Academy full-back Calum Woods was born in Liverpool. Patrik Berger and substitute Danny Murphy were also on target, with Lee Bowyer scoring for the visitors. 1972 - We also entertained Leeds, being held to a goalless draw in our FA Cup Fourth Round tie. Unfortunately, we lost the replay at Elland Road four days later. Ton up for Brucie 1983 - Bruce Grobbelaar played his hundredth reds game as we won 3-1 at Luton Town, with Brian Stein bagging one of his four goals against us. Ian Rush, Alan Kennedy and Graeme Souness all scored for the reds. Beating the Cottagers 2005 - We beat Fulham 3-1 at Anfield, with Fernando Morientes heading in the opening goal before Andy Cole equalised to become the first player to score against Liverpool for four different Premiership teams, the last of his eleven goals against us. Sami Hyypiä and Milan Baroš were on target in the second half to secure the victory. Rafael Benítez had named an unchanged side from four days previously, something he was not to repeat for another hundred games. 1955 - We also faced Fulham with Tony Rowley and John Evans on target as we won a Second Division encounter 2-1 at Craven Cottage. On the way to more finals 1986 - Kenny Dalglish was on target as we drew 1-1 at Norwich City in the first leg of our Screen Sport Super Cup Semi-final. We won the second leg 3-1 to progress to a two-legged Final against Everton. 1992 - Dean Saunders was on target as we could only draw 1-1 at Second Division Bristol Rovers in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup. We won the replay 2-1 as we headed towards Wembley glory that season. Final despair 2017 – Future red Mohamed Salah was on the losing side as Cameroon beat Egypt 2-1 in the Africa Cup of Nations Final in Gabon. On the same day, midfielder Allan and future red Luis Díaz both played in South American Championships final stage games in Ecuador, with Brazil Under-20’s beating Venezuela 1-0 and Colombia losing 3-0 to Uruguay. Dumped out of the cup 2003 - First Division Crystal Palace knocked us out of the FA Cup in a Fourth Round replay at Anfield. We failed to convert any of the many chances we created before Palace eventually triumphed 2-0, despite being reduced to ten men during the second half after Dougie Freedman’s dismissal. Julian Gray scored for the Eagles before Stéphane Henchoz put through his own net. Wor Kev 1992 - Kevin Keegan was appointed Manager of Newcastle United for the first time. He was in charge for nearly five years, guiding them to the First Division title in his first full season in charge, and then to within a whisker of the Premiership in 1996. Thommo steps back 1974 – Phil Thompson moved from midfield to centre-half in the place of Larry Lloyd as we beat Coventry City 2-1 at Anfield in a Tuesday afternoon game, played during the three-day week. Alan Waddle hit both the bar and post, with our goals coming from an Alec Lindsay penalty and Kevin Keegan. Stalemates galore Just like yesterday, this day has proven to be a day of draws in our history, with seven of our nineteen first-class matches ending in stalemate, including three of the last seven games. Recently in and out 2021 – Kaide Gordon arrived from Derby County for a reported initial £1m. He made his senior bow in a League Cup Third Round tie at Norwich City in September 2021, so far netting once in six outings. 2020 – Midfielder Tom Hill signed as a professional. He made his senior debut in our 5-0 League Cup Quarter-final defeat at Aston Villa in December 2019. 2010 – Bulgarian keeper Nikolay Mihaylov was sold to Twente for €1.8m. He had joined the reds from PFC Levski Sofia in July 2007, but work permit problems helped ensure he never played for the first team as he joined Twente on loan just two months after arriving at Anfield. Tommy’s century 1938 – Right-back Tommy Cooper played his hundredth League game for the reds as we drew 1-1 at home to Leeds United, with Berry Nieuwenhuys on target. Ex-red Gordon Hodgson netted one of his three goals against the reds. Zico for England 1966 - Future reds legend Phil Neal played in his first trial game for the English Schools FA in Ilford. He went on to win fifty senior caps for his country. Kitted out 2003 - The club announced that its kit contract with Reebok had been extended until 2010, in a deal worth up to £100m. However, this deal was ended early. Internationals on target 1991 - Ex-reds reserves midfielder Jim Magilton netted from the spot on his senior debut for Northern Ireland as they beat Poland 3-1 in a friendly at Windsor Park. Peter Beardsley, David Burrows and future red Michael Thomas all played for England B as they beat Wales 1-0 in Swansea. 2008 – Future red James Milner struck as England Under-21’s beat the Republic of Ireland in a European Championships qualifier in Southampton. Meanwhile, Dejan Lovren skippered Croatia Under-19’s as they lost 2-0 to England in Swindon, with fellow future red Andy Carroll and ex-reds Milan Baroš and Djibril Cissé also in international action. 2013 – Future red Virgil van Dijk won his third and last cap for the Under-21’s and Luis Alberto his only one at this level. On the same day, ex-red Tom Ince struck twice with Jonjo Shelvey also scoring as England Under-21’s beat their Swedish counterparts 4-0 in a friendly in Walsall. Jordan Henderson skippered a side that also included Jack Robinson and Andre Wisdom, with Suso also playing for Spain at this level. Future red Sadio Mané also played for his country that day. Also in international action 1964 – Peter Thompson and future red Dave Wilson played for England Under-23’s in their 3-2 defeat of Scotland at St. James’ Park. 1975 – Celtic’s Kenny Dalglish played in Scotland’s 1-1 European Championships qualifying draw in Spain. 1985 – Jim Beglin, Mark Lawrenson, Ronnie Whelan and ex-red Kevin Sheedy all featured as the Republic of Ireland lost a friendly 2-1 to Italy in Dublin. 2016 – Ex-reds Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-16’s as they drew 1-1 with host nation Portugal in the Algarve Tournament. Other reds games 1927 – We beat Arsenal 3-0 at Anfield with Harry Chambers and Tommy Reid netting before Horace Cope put through his own net. 1908 – We won 3-0 at Brighton & Hove Albion in our FA Cup Second Round replay. James Bradley bagged a brace with Jack Cox also on target. We lost at Newcastle United at the next stage. Paco in charge 2009 – Former reds First Team Coach Paco Herrera was appointed Manager of Club Deportivo Castellón, although he did not manage to see out the year in charge. Mason no more 2006 - Legendary Wrexham full-back Stuart Mason died aged 57 in Wrexham. He joined the reds in a joint £26,000 deal along with Peter Wall in October 1966, but failed to break into our first team, returning to the Racecourse Ground after two years.
