His performance may have been affected by receiving a telegram shortly before kick-off to inform him that his wife had been taken to hospital with heart trouble. On the same day, Alan A’Court played in England’s goalless draw with Brazil in Gothenburg. 1997 - Haukur Ingi Guðnason won his last cap for Iceland Under-21’s cap as a Keflavík player in their 3-0 European Championships qualifying defeat by Lithuania. 2013 – Jonjo Shelvey made his last appearance for England Under-21’s as a red as they lost 1-0 to Israel in a European Championships Finals group game in Jerusalem, with future red Nathaniel Clyne winning his eighth and last cap at this level. Jordan Henderson, Andre Wisdom and ex-red Tom Ince also featured. Dejan Lovren, ex-red Joe Allen and future red Thiago Alcântara all played in World Cup qualifiers that day. 2021 - Marko Grujic won his final cap before leaving the reds permanently, facing Takumi Minamino as Japan beat Serbia 1-0 in Kobe. 2022 – Neco Williams won his last cap as a red player as Wales drew their UEFA Nations League group game with Belgium 1-1 in Cardiff, with Joe Allen appearing for the final time while with Stoke City. Ex-red Raheem Sterling skippered England in their goalless encounter with Italy in the same competition at Molineux. Mark off the mark 2003 - Future reds winger Mark González grabbed his first international goal while winning his second cap in Chile’s 2-1 friendly defeat of Honduras 2-1 in San Pedro Sula. R.C.D. Espanyol’s Maxi Rodríguez also featured in friendly action that day. 2009 – He represented his country again as Chile beat Bolivia 4-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Santiago, winning his last cap while with Real Betis Balompié. Red endings 1914 – Centre-half Joe McQue died aged just forty following an operation at the Victoria Infirmary in Glasgow. He signed from Celtic in August 1892, netting fourteen times in 142 games before returning north of the border in September 1898 to sign for Third Lanark having helped us to claim the Second Division title twice. 1952 - Outside-right Archie Rawlings died. He signed from Preston North End in March 1924, striking ten times in his 67 reds games before moving on to Walsall in June 1926. 1909 - Stalwart centre-half Alex Raisbeck was sold to Partick Thistle for £500. He netted nineteen times in 341 games in eleven years, becoming our first skipper to lift the League title in 1901. He went on to win a further League title five years later, as well as a Second Division championship. He returned to Anfield in 1939 as a scout, staying in that role until his death ten years later. 2003 - Reserves forward Mark Peers joined Raith Rovers on a free transfer. He made just eight senior appearances for them, only netting once, before returning south of the border to join Conference side Leigh RMI in February 2005. Forwards in and out 1897 - Joe Lumsden signed from Burton Wanderers, scoring twice in just eight senior outings before moving on to Glossop North End in May 1898. 1937 - Vic Wright left the reds for Plymouth Argyle. He had struck 33 times in 85 reds games after signing from Rotherham United in March 1934. Kenny bows out in Argentina 1978 - Kenny Dalglish scored as Scotland beat the Netherlands 3-2 in the World Cup in Mendoza, but it was not enough to take them through to the next round. Graeme Souness also played in this game. The Dutch went on all the way to the Final to face hosts Argentina. 2017 – Sheyi Ojo won his fifth and last England Under-20’s cap as they beat Venezuela 1-0 in the World Championships Final in South Korea, with future red Dominic Solanke also featuring. Happy birthdays 1875 – Forward Dan Cunliffe was born in Bolton. He signed from Oldham County in 1897 and struck six times in eighteen games before moving to New Brighton Tower the following year. 1953 – Bob Paisley’s first signing as boss, keeper Peter McDonnell was born in Kendal. He arrived from Bury in July 1974 for £20,000 but never made the first team, sitting on the bench at the European Cup Final in Rome in 1977, and on another 27 occasions, including both legs of the 1976 UEFA Cup Final, three FA Charity Shields and both legs of the UEFA Super Cup Final in 1977. He left Anfield to join Oldham Athletic in August 1978. 1875 – Forward Sam Raybould was born in Staveley, Chesterfield. He signed from New Brighton Tower for £250 in January 1900, scoring 130 times in 226 reds games and helping us to claim two League titles before moving on to Sunderland in May 1907. Pelle’s debut 1997 - Future red Mauricio Pellegrino won the first of his three caps for Argentina in their goalless draw with Ecuador in the Copa América in Bolivia. Future red Milan Baroš appeared for the Czech Republic Under-15’s on the same day. Red against red in Cagliari 1990 - John Barnes, Peter Beardsley and Steve McMahon all featured for England as they drew a World Cup group game 1-1 with a Republic of Ireland side that included goalscoring ex-red Kevin Sheedy as well as Ray Houghton, Steve Staunton and ex-red John Aldridge. 1986 – Future red Beardsley also played in the World Cup Finals as England beat Poland 3-0 in Monterrey. Also at the World Cup 2002 - Germany beat Cameroon 2-0 in Shizuoka to progress to the last sixteen of the World Cup. Dietmar Hamann and ex-reds Rigobert Song and Christian Ziege all played, with Rigo winning his final cap as a West Ham United player. Future red Robbie Keane struck in the Republic of Ireland’s 3-0 defeat of Saudi Arabia in Yokohama to also progress from the same group, with future red Steve Finnan and ex-reds Jason McAteer and Steve Staunton also featuring. Senegal drew 3-3 with Uruguay, after leading by three goals. El-Hadji Diouf won a penalty for the first goal, while Salif Diao was suspended for this game. Future red Djibril Cissé won his fifth full international cap as a substitute in France’s 2-0 defeat by Denmark in Incheon, as they crashed out of the tournament without scoring. Christian Poulsen won his final cap as an F.C. København player in this game. 1998 – Future red Song also played in the World Cup in Cameroon’s 1-1 draw with Austria in Toulouse. 2006 - Future red Dirk Kuyt played as the Netherlands beat Serbia & Montenegro 1-0 in Leipzig. 2010 – Ex-red Nicolas Anelka faced future red Luis Suárez as France and Uruguay shared a goalless draw in Cape Town. In Euro action 2012 – Roy Hodgson took charge of an England side skippered by Steven Gerrard, with Jordan Henderson, Glen Johnson and future reds James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also featuring against ex-red Alou Diarra’s France. This European Championships Finals group game ended 1-1 in Donetsk. On the same day, ex-red Andriy Voronin featured for the Ukraine as they beat Sweden 2-1 in the same group in Kyiv. 2016 – Hodgson’s England drew 1-1 with Russia in Marseille, with Adam Lallana, James Milner and ex-red Raheem Sterling all featuring. Tony on a run 1969 - Ex-red Tony Hateley scored in the fourth of all seven games of an FA Tour, grabbing a hat-trick as England thumped New Zealand 5-0 in Auckland. In Toulon 1993 - Jamie Redknapp and future reds Academy coach Mike Sheron played for England Under-21’s in the Toulon Tournament as they held Brazil to a goalless draw. 1989 - Future red Neil Ruddock appeared as the USA clinched third place with a 2-0 defeat of England. 1987 – Nottingham Forest’s Nigel Clough was in the side that lost 2-0 to France in the same competition. Luis on target 2011 – Luis Suárez netted in an unofficial international as Uruguay thumped Plaza Colonia 5-0. More youngsters on the international stage 2005 - Future reds Gabriel Paletta and Nabil El Zhar were both on the losing side in group stage games in the Under-20’s World Championship Finals in the Netherlands. 2007 - Scott Carson and future red James Milner played for England Under-21’s as they held the Czech Republic to a goalless draw in the European Championships Finals in the same country. Alberto Aquilani played for Italy in the same competition as they lost 1-0 to Serbia. Jen under way 2012 - Jen Chang started work as the club’s Corporate Relations and Communications Director. However, he only lasted in the role for five months before leaving “by mutual consent”. Also in international action 1978 – Future reds Joe Corrigan and Alan Kennedy both played for England B as they won 3-1 in Nez Zealand. 1994 – Ex-red Jim Magilton played for Northern Ireland as they lost 2-0 to Mexico in Miami, with Roy Hodgson taking charge of Switzerland on the same day as they drew 0-0 with Bolivia in Canada. 2015 - Future red Danny Ings played for England Under-21’s in their 1-0 defeat of Belarus in Barnsley. Meanwhile, ex-red Mikel San José played for the full Spanish side as they beat Costa Rica 2-1 in a friendly in Leon. 2018 – Sadio Mané played for Senegal as they beat South Korea 2-0 in Austria. Honoured 2021 – Jordan Henderson and ex-red Raheem Sterling were both awarded MBEs in the Queen’s birthday honours, with Roy Hodgson made a CBE. On the same day, Mohamed Salah was named Premier League PFA Fans’ Player of the Year for the second time.

Happy birthday Marks 1957 - Mark Lawrenson was born in Preston. He joined us for a then-record fee of £900,000 from Brighton & Hove Albion in August 1981, going on to make 356 appearances, netting eighteen times while helping us to win four League titles, one European Cup, one FA Cup, three League Cups, the FA Charity Shield and Screen Sport Super Cup in his time at Anfield, before taking over as Oxford United boss in March 1988. 1964 - Mark Everton Walters was born in Birmingham. The most famous of his 124 games in a red shirt came when he inspired a UEFA Cup comeback against Auxerre in 1991, as he remained on the bench for both the 1992 FA Cup Final and League Cup Final in 1995. He also scored the crucial second goal in our defeat of Manchester United that handed the title to Leeds United in April 1992, one of his nineteen reds strikes after signing from Rangers for £1.25m in August 1991. He left Anfield to join Southampton on a free transfer in January 1996. 1867 - David Ashworth was born in Poulton-le-Fylde. He was appointed as reds boss in December 1919. He had previously guided Oldham Athletic from non-League into the top flight, to whom he returned in December 1922 with the reds en route to retaining the League title he had led them to the previous season. 1948 – Full-back Stuart Mason was born in Whitchurch, Shropshire. He signed with left-back Peter Wall from Wrexham for a combined £35,000, never managing to make the first team. He went on to make over a century of League appearances for both Wrexham and Chester. In comes Titi 1999 - Aboubakar ‘Titi’ Camara signed from Marseille for £2.6m. He scored ten times in 37 reds games, most famously the only goal of the game at home to West Ham United on the day his father died. He joined the Hammers for £2.2m in December 2000, although he only made fourteen appearances for them, before being loaned to Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia. More arrivals 2014 – Kirkby-born forward Rickie Lambert signed from Southampton for an initial £4m, although he only managed to strike three times in 36 outings across his one season with the reds, with only twelve of these being starts. He moved on to West Bromwich Albion in July 2015. 1997 - Attacking midfielder Øyvind Leonhardsen signed from Wimbledon for £3.5m. He stayed at Anfield for two years, making 49 appearances, many in an uncomfortable left-sided role. He scored seven times before being sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £3m in August 1999. 1923 – Inside-forward Billy McDevitt signed from Swansea Town, being converted into a centre-half, but played just four times before moving on to Exeter City for a club record fee in May 1925. Six farewells 2003 - Pegguy Arphexad, Patrik Berger, Bernard Diomède, Vegard Heggem, Stephen McNulty and Mark Peers were all released by the club. Heggem had netted three times in a total of 65 reds games, but injury brought his career to an end, while Berger had struck 35 goals in 196 appearances. Back in black 1936 - We wore a black kit as we beat Romanian side Ripensia Timisoara 2-1 in a friendly as Alf Hanson netted in his third consecutive game of our Eastern European tour, with Syd Roberts also on target. 1939 - We thumped a Swedish Combination side 6-0. Reds in the World Cup 2002 - England drew their opening World Cup match with Sweden 1-1 in Saitama. Robbie Keane won his first cap after his permanent move to Leeds United in the Republic of Ireland’s 1-1 qualifying draw with Portugal. He was not kept on when Steve Bruce took charge four months later. 2018 – Ex-reds centre-half and coach Mauricio Pellegrino was appointed Manager of Club Deportivo Leganés, leading them to thirteenth place in his first campaign, their highest ever La Liga finish. We won the return by the same score. Happy birthdays 1983 - Philipp Degen was born in Hölstein. The Swiss right-back made just thirteen appearances for the first team as his time at Anfield was blighted by injury following his free transfer from Borussia Dortmund in July 2008. His contract was cancelled by mutual consent in August 2011 after he had spent the previous campaign on loan at VfB Stuttgart. 1986 - Former centre-back Gabriel Paletta was born in Buenos Aires. He signed from Club Atlético Banfield for £2m in July 2006, but only featured eight times for the first team before returning to his native land to join Boca Juniors in August 2007. A change at the top 1928 - Matt McQueen resigned as Manager after five years in charge. He had previously played for the reds in every position on the park, as well serving as a Director. He led us to our fourth League title in his first season. Harry Race scored on his reds debut on the same day, in a 3-2 League win at Derby County, to add to a brace from Dick Edmed. Joe’s treble 1908 - Joe Hewitt scored a hat-trick in a 4-1 home League win over Woolwich Arsenal, with Jim Bradley also on the scoresheet, while outside-left Michael Griffin played his first reds game. Tim Coleman netted one of his nine goals past us. 1964 - We also beat the Gunners, with Ian St. John heading the only goal of our FA Cup Fifth Round tie at Highbury after fifteen minutes, as Roger Hunt had a last-minute penalty saved by ex-red Jim Furnell. Ron Yeats and Gunners striker Joe Baker were both dismissed in the first half following a mêlée brought on by a Baker tackle on Yeats, with the reds skipper vehemently protesting his innocence afterwards. Unfortunately, Swansea Town knocked us out at Anfield at the next hurdle. Walsh walks 1987 - Paul Walsh was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £500,000. He had struck 37 times in 112 reds games after arriving from Luton Town for £700,000 in May 1984, winning a League title and the Screen Sport Super Cup during his time at Anfield. Alan Shearer had put the home side ahead with the first of his eight goals against the reds. In comes Igor 2000 - Igor Bišcan signed from Dinamo Zagreb for £5.5m. The big Croat helped us to the Worthington Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield in 2001, and the Worthington Cup again two years later, as well as playing a key role in our Champions League triumph in 2005. He left for Panathinaikos in July 2005 after three goals in 118 reds games. 1897 – Right-back General Stevenson signed from Padiham, playing 22 times without scoring before joining Barnsley in June 1900. 1936 – South African keeper Dirk Kemp signed from Transvaal, although he only played thirty senior and ten Wartime games for the reds. 1905 – Scottish left-back David Murray was sold to Leeds City for £130. He had arrived from Everton on a free transfer in August 1904, helping us to clinch the Second Division title, playing fifteen senior games. Buchan-eering 1912 - Charlie Buchan scored five goals for Sunderland as they thrashed us 7-0 in a top-flight fixture at Roker Park, his first strikes past us. Three of his goals came in the final ten minutes when left-back Donald McKinlay had gone off injured and dusk had fallen. This remains the most ever scored by one player in a match against the reds. He in fact scored a total of eighteen times against the reds in his Sunderland career, as well as another three when with Arsenal, and bagged a treble in the reverse fixture later that season. Jackie Mordue netted one of his six goals past us, with Harry Martin also netting. The perfect group 2021 – We became the first English side to win all six UEFA Champions League group games in a season by winning 2-1 at AC Milan, despite falling behind to a Fikayo Tomori goal. Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi struck either side of half time as Sadio Mané played his fiftieth game in the competition for the reds, with forward Max Woltman debuting as a late substitute. We progressed all the way to the Final in Paris that campaign. Centre-backs at each end 2013 – We beat West Ham United 4-1 at Anfield, going ahead through a Guy Demel own goal just before the break. Mamadou Sakho bagged his first reds goal before Martin Škrtel put through his own net. However, Luis Suárez struck twice to secure the victory. Glen Johnson took over the captain’s armband when Steven Gerrard was substituted early in the second half, while Kevin Nolan was sent off for the visitors late on. Wolves win again 1946 - Wolverhampton Wanderers won for the third consecutive League season at Anfield, interrupted by the war, going home with a 5-1 victory in this clash of the top two in the League. Wallasey-born Dennis Westcott scored four first-half goals for Wolves and had another strike wrongly ruled out for offside, with Jack Balmer nabbing our consolation from the spot. Remarkably, Westcott also grabbed four goals in his next game, against Bolton Wanderers. These were the last of his nine strikes past us. Nicol the winner 1996 - Steve Nicol was on the winning side for Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield, when Guy Whittingham struck the only goal of the game. Nicol got a nasty elbow in the face from Neil Ruddock during this game. Happy birthdays 1949 – Former reserve team boss John McMahon, Steve’s brother, was born in Manchester. He played more than 250 League games for Preston North End, also playing for Wigan Athletic and Tranmere Rovers before moving into coaching with Rovers and then Shrewsbury Town. He was in charge of the reserves between June 2009 and March 2011. 1972 - Sean Dundee was born in Durban. He arrived at Anfield for £1.8m in June 1998, but only made five appearances off the bench before leaving for VfB Stuttgart for £1m a year later. Off the mark quickly 1935 - Bob Glassey scored five minutes into his reds bow as we beat Preston North End 2-1 at Anfield. Jack Balmer nabbed our other goal, also his first reds strike. A lowly record 1895 - We recorded our lowest ever League attendance at Anfield, with just 1,000 turning up to see Frank Becton net the only goal of our Second Division encounter with Loughborough Town. Scottish reds 1965 - Ron Yeats won his second and final cap for Scotland as they beat Italy 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Naples. 1938 - Preston North End’s Bill Shankly won his fourth cap as the Scots beat Hungary 3-1 in a friendly at Ibrox. Full-back Andy Beattie, who guested for the reds during the war and later joined our backroom staff, won his seventh and final official cap for the Scots in the same game. Mo Johnston equalised almost immediately, before ex-red Peter Beardsley struck the winner after being played in by fellow ex-red Gary Ablett to become only the second player to score for both sides in this fixture. Also in Europe 2000 - Emile Heskey and Nick Barmby struck as we beat Olympiacos 2-0 at Anfield to reach the Fourth Round of the UEFA Cup, 4-2 on aggregate. Irish English 1932 – Future reds forward Sam English netted his only goal for Northern Ireland while winning his second and final cap as they lost 4-1 to Wales in the British International Championships in Wrexham, with reds keeper Elisha Scott also on the losing side. Future red Ernie Blenkinsop played for England as they beat Austria 4-3 in a friendly at Stamford Bridge on the same day. 2011 – Future red Mohamed Salah scored for Egypt Under-23’s in their 3-2 defeat by Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations Semi-final in Marrakesh. Another big win 1918 - We thumped Oldham Athletic 5-1 at Anfield in a Wartime League fixture at Anfield, thanks to two apiece from Donald McKinlay and Thomas Green, and a goal from Harold Wadsworth. Other reds games 2002 – We lost 2-0 to Charlton Athletic at The Valley thanks to goals from Jason Euell and future red Paul Konchesky. 1929 – Gordon Hodgson opened the scoring but Burnley beat us 3-1 at Anfield. George Beel netted the last two of his eight goals against the reds, with Louis Page bagging one of his seven past us. 1901 – Sam Raybould struck as we were beaten 2-1 at Sheffield United. Alf Common scored the first of his five goals against us, with Walter Bennett scoring one of his four. Young reds in opposition 2000 - John Welsh and Mark Peers played for England Under-16’s as they lost 2-0 to France at The Valley, with future red Anthony Le Tallec bagging one of the goals. Management moves 1987 – It was announced that Peter Robinson had extended his contract as Club Secretary until 1995. 2005 - Steve McMahon quit as Perth Glory boss, following a combination of media speculation, poor transfer signings, the team’s indifferent form and an apparent disagreement with the board. 2008 – John Barnes managed Jamaica as they were held to a 1-1 draw in the Digicel Caribbean Championships in Trelawny by Trinidad & Tobago. 2015 - Nigel Clough was appointed Manager of Burton Albion for a second time, having been in charge originally between October 1998 and January 2009. The birth of a great keeper 1940 - Tommy ‘The Flying Pig’ Lawrence was born in Dailly, Ayrshire. The legendary keeper signed professional terms in October 1957 and played 390 times for us, winning two League title medals and an FA Charity Shield as well as being a member of the 1965 FA Cup winning side. He left the club in November 1971 to join Tranmere Rovers. 1929 - Centre-forward Louis Bimpson was born in Rainford. He scored 39 goals in his 102 first-team appearances after signing on a free transfer from Burscough in January 1953. He moved on to Blackburn Rovers in November 1959. 1984 - Ex-reserves forward Mark Peers was born in St. Helens. He never made it into our first team and is currently playing for Canterbury United in New Zealand. The title clinched at Anfield again and again 1977 - We retained the League title, holding West Ham United to a goalless draw at Anfield, to win the championship for the tenth time. 1995 - Kenny Dalglish’s Blackburn Rovers side clinched the League despite losing 2-1 at Anfield, as Manchester United failed to beat West Ham United at Upton Park. Alan Shearer struck one of his eight goals past us before John Barnes equalised, with Jamie Redknapp scoring the goal that might have cost Rovers the League, had the Irons not held on for a draw. Up for the cup 2022 – We claimed the FA Cup for the eighth time as our Wembley meeting with Chelsea ended goalless after extra time, with both sides hitting the woodwork. We won 6-5 on penalties, with James Milner, Thiago Alcântara, Roberto Firmino and Trent Alexander-Arnold all converting before Sadio Mané’s spot-kick was saved. Diogo Jota also converted, with Kostas Tsimikas netting the decisive penalty. Managers in and out 1983 - Bob Paisley bowed out as reds boss, signing off with a 2-1 defeat at second-placed Watford, having already clinched our fourteenth League title two weeks before. Craig Johnston netted our consolation that day. Wembley disappointment 1988 - We suffered defeat in the FA Cup Final at the hands of underdogs Wimbledon, to be denied a second double in three seasons. Lawrie Sanchez scored the only goal of the game, while Peter Beardsley had a goal chalked off and Dave Beasant saved a penalty from John Aldridge - the only spot-kick we have been awarded in an FA Cup Final, and the first penalty miss in any Wembley final. This game also saw Craig Johnston’s 271st and final reds appearance. Also recently 2017 – We paid our first visit to West Ham United’s new ground, the London Stadium, thumping the Hammers 4-0 as we closed in on Champions League qualification. Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring before the break, with Philippe Coutinho bagging a brace and Divock Origi also on target. Champions League failure 2000 - Our 1-0 defeat at Bradford City, thanks to a David Wetherall goal, meant we just missed out on a first venture in the new Champions League, and ensured the Bantams’ top-flight survival. Titi Camara played his 37th and final reds game, with Dominic Matteo appearing for the 155th and last time, while Jamie Redknapp featured for the 300th time. For Clem 1980 - A testimonial match for Ray Clemence was staged at Anfield as the reds lost 8-6 to Belgians Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht, with defender Richard Money bagging his first reds goal. Kevin Keegan returned to score for the reds that night, with Howard Gayle grabbing a brace and Clem himself and ex-red Joey Jones also on the scoresheet.
