Redders off the mark 1991 - Jamie Redknapp scored his first reds goal as we held Southampton to a 1-1 League draw at The Dell. Alan Shearer had put the home side ahead with the first of his eight goals against the reds. In comes Igor 2000 - Igor Bišcan signed from Dinamo Zagreb for £5.5m. The big Croat helped us to the Worthington Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield in 2001, and the Worthington Cup again two years later, as well as playing a key role in our Champions League triumph in 2005. Another record for St. Michael 2003 - Michael Owen became England’s youngest ever player to reach fifty caps. He captained the side, bagging a brace, including a penalty, as they beat Slovakia 2-1 in a Euro 2004 qualifier at the Riverside Stadium. Steven Gerrard and ex-red David James also played. Happy birthday Marks 1957 - Mark Lawrenson was born in Preston. He joined us for a then-record fee of £900,000 from Brighton & Hove Albion in August 1981, going on to make 356 appearances, netting eighteen times while helping us to win four League titles, one European Cup, one FA Cup, three League Cups, the FA Charity Shield and Screen Sport Super Cup in his time at Anfield, before taking over as Oxford United boss in March 1988. 1964 - Mark Everton Walters was born in Birmingham. The birth of a great keeper 1940 - Tommy ‘The Flying Pig’ Lawrence was born in Dailly, Ayrshire. The legendary keeper signed professional terms in October 1957 and played 390 times for us, winning two League title medals and an FA Charity Shield as well as being a member of the 1965 FA Cup winning side. He left the club in November 1971 to join Tranmere Rovers. 1929 - Centre-forward Louis Bimpson was born in Rainford. He scored 39 goals in his 102 first-team appearances after signing on a free transfer from Burscough in January 1953. He moved on to Blackburn Rovers in November 1959. 1
