He signed for the reds on loan from West Ham United in January 2007, joining permanently thirteen months later. A hat-trick for Michael 1998 - Michael Owen bagged a hat-trick as we beat Newcastle United 4-1 at St. James’ Park, to spoil Ruud Gullit’s first game in charge. Stéphane Guivarc’h replied for the home side with Patrik Berger rounding out the scoring, which all took place in the first half. The Saint off the mark 1961 – Ian St. John struck his first two reds goals as we trounced Sunderland 4-1, with Roger Hunt also on target twice and Brian Clough netting the last of his ten goals past us. 1958 – We were beaten 2-1, when Billy Liddell grabbed our consolation at Roker Park. 1922 - We also lost 1-0 on another visit to the North East. Carra’s half century 2012 - Jamie Carragher played his fiftieth game in Europe’s second tier competition as Heart Of Midlothian held us to a 1-1 draw in the second leg of our UEFA Europa League play-off at Anfield. David Templeton’s strike that evaded Pepe Reina with just six minutes remaining looked to have secured extra time, but Luis Suárez scored to send us through. 1980 – Left-back Alan Kennedy reached a century of reds appearances, also scoring in our 4-1 defeat of Norwich City at Anfield with Alan Hansen, Terry McDermott and David Johnson also on target. Loaned out 2012 – Centre-forward Andy Carroll joined West Ham United on loan after bagging eleven goals in 58 reds games since his club record £35m capture on transfer deadline day in January 2011. He netted seven times in 24 games for the Irons, before signing on permanently for £15.5m in June 2013, their record fee paid to date. On the same day, young forward Samed Yeşil moved to Anfield from Bayer 04 Leverkusen for a reported £1m. He made two senior reds appearances before being released in June 2016. Meanwhile, ex-red Ryan Babel was released by TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, later re-joining Ajax. 2015 – Forward Lazar Marković joined Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü on loan, netting twice in twenty outings. Out of Anfield 2002 - Jari Litmanen rejoined his old club Ajax on a free transfer. He had only managed to make nineteen starts in as many months at Anfield, notching nine goals in 43 appearances in all, and failed to really establish himself back in the Netherlands. 2006 - Neil Mellor joined Preston North End for a reported £0.5m. He netted 43 times in 151 outings before having to retire due to injury in May 2012. 1999 - Bjørn Tore Kvarme signed for Saint-Étienne on a free transfer. He had made 54 reds appearances but was not the defensive missing link we were searching for. He spent two seasons in France before joining Sander Westerveld at Real Sociedad, retiring from the game in June 2008 after a spell back with his first club, Rosenborg BK. 1990 - Reserves defender Alex Watson joined Derby County on loan, going on to make five appearances for the Rams. His brother Dave, another ex-reds reserve, went on to far greater success with Everton. 1911 – Forward Herbert Leavey left the reds to join Barnsley after just five senior games since arriving from Plymouth Argyle in June 1910. Also off the mark 1919 – George Patterson took charge of the reds for the first time as inside-forward Harry Lewis, Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers and outside-left Albert Pearson all scored on their reds debuts, as we won 3-1 at Bradford City as another season began, with Jimmy Marshall nabbing one of his five goals against the reds. Lewis also missed a penalty, while full-back William Jenkinson also made his reds bow with forward Billy Lacey playing his hundredth League game for the club. 1933 - Forward Sam English scored his first reds goal in our 1-1 draw with Stoke City at Anfield, the first time we had faced them since their name change from the simpler Stoke. Tommy Sale struck the first of his five goals past us that day. We have beaten Stoke City twice more on this day over the years. 1947 - Billy Liddell struck a brace as we won 2-0 at the Victoria Ground. 1952 - We won 3-2 in L4 with Jack Smith, Kevin Baron and Billy Liddell on the scoresheet. Frank Bowyer struck one of his four goals against the reds, with Les Johnston also netting. Happy birthdays 1986 - Winger Sebastián Leto was born in Alejandro Korn in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He signed from Club Atlético Lanús for £1.85m in January 2007, although the transfer was not formally completed until seven months later. He made just four senior appearances and moved permanently to Panathinaikos in July 2009 after spending the previous season on loan at Olympiacos. 2002 – Portuguese forward Fábio Carvalho was born in Torres Vedras. He signed from Fulham for an initial £5m in July 2022, debuting as we won the FA Community Shield later that month and scoring a total of three times in 21 games in his first season with the reds. Out-foxed We twice visited Filbert Street to play Leicester City on this day in the 1970’s, without winning. 1972 - We lost 3-2 with John Toshack bagging an early brace to put us two goals ahead, before Keith Weller struck a hat-trick, the first of his six goals against the reds. 1975 - We were held 1-1, with Kevin Keegan nabbing our goal. Two minutes earlier he had converted a penalty, but had to retake it, and failed with his second attempt. Keith Weller netted against the reds again, the last of his six strikes against us. Losing out to the Villains We twice faced Aston Villa on this day in the 1920’s, without winning. 1924 - Donald McKinlay and Danny Shone netted as we lost 4-2 at Anfield in our opening match of the season. Billy Walker struck two of his five goals against the reds, with Billy Kirton and Arthur Dorrell also on target. 1926 - Dick Forshaw was on target as we drew 1-1 at Villa Park, with Len Capewell scoring one of his six strikes past us. Heading towards Wembley 1977 - Kenny Dalglish and Jimmy Case were on the scoresheet as we beat Chelsea 2-0 at Anfield in a League Cup Second Round fixture. We went on to reach the Final of the competition for the first time that season. East end Hutch 1994 - Don Hutchison left Anfield for West Ham United for £1.5m after ten goals in sixty reds games. 2001 - He moved back to Upton Park, joining from Sunderland for £5m, having also played for Sheffield United and Everton in the meantime. Starting off well 1930 - Jim Smith netted twice as we beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 at Anfield in our opening fixture of the season, with outside-left Fred Hopkin playing his 300th League game for the reds. Jack Bruton scored one of his four goals past us. Beaten to a trophy 1989 - The reds lost 2-0 to Real Madrid in the eleventh Trofeo Internacional “Santiago Bernabéu”, thanks to goals from Hugo Sánchez and Emilio Butragueño. Other reds games 1995 – Neil Ruddock netted the only goal of Queens Park Rangers’ visit to Anfield. 1986 – We beat Arsenal 2-1 in L4. Jan Mølby converted a penalty before Tony Adams equalised. Ian Rush grabbed the winner. 1969 – Chris Lawler headed in as we drew 1-1 at Sheffield Wednesday. 1966 – We beat Manchester City 3-2 at home with Roger Hunt and Geoff Strong both scoring early on. Matt Gray pulled a goal back after the break with Hunt netting again before Jimmy Murray bagging the last of his four goals against the reds. 1950 – We lost 1-0 at Manchester United. A Gray day 1910 - 1930’s defender Alf Gray was born in Westhoughton, Bolton. He failed to break into our first team. On the move 2005 – Brazilian keeper Alexander Doni joined Roma from Juventude in his native land for US$18,000. 2003 - Steve McManaman signed for Manchester City from Real Madrid on a free transfer. He appeared just 44 times for them without scoring before being released. 2002 - Øyvind Leonhardsen joined Aston Villa from Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer. He left Villa Park two years later, after three goals in 23 games. 1997 - Reserves winger Nicky Rizzo signed from Sydney Olympic. He never made our first team, and is currently back in his homeland, running a soccer school. 2006 – Future reds scout Jonathan Woodgate joined Middlesbrough on loan from Real Madrid, making the move permanent for £7m the following summer. He played 52 times without scoring, moving on to Tottenham Hotspur for a reported £8m in January 2008. 2018 – Keeper Caoimhin Kelleher and winger Sheyi Ojo both signed new contracts, with Ojo then completing a loan move to Stade de Reims on the same day, where he scored once in eighteen games for their first team. 2021 – Left-back James Norris signed a new contract with the reds, having already made one senior appearance. On the same day, centre-half Ozan Kabak joined Norwich City on loan from Schalke 04, playing twelve times as they were relegated from the Premier League. 2022 - Dutch centre-half Sepp van den Berg penned a new deal, also joining Schalke 04 on loan on the same day, scoring once in nine games while in Germany. First caps 1996 - Brad Friedel won his first cap as a Columbus Crew player, and fortieth in total, as the USA beat El Salvador 3-1 in a friendly in Los Angeles. 2006 – Future reds loanee Victor Moses played for England Under-17’s for the first time, in their 2-2 friendly draw with Turkey. On the same day, future red Alex Manninger played for Austria Under-21’s in their 4-0 European Championships qualifying defeat of Scotland in Amstetten. Also in international action 2015 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s as they lost a friendly 7-3 to Portugal in Burton, with Adam Lewis playing.

He was appointed in April 2010 to locate a buyer for the club from George Gillett and Tom Hicks, which he succeeded in finding in New England Sports Ventures in October 2010, following a series of legal battles. He left his role in the following month and was knighted for his services to business in December 2010. 1982 – Albert Riera was born in Manacor in Mallorca. He signed from R.C.D. Espanyol for an initial £5.5m on transfer deadline day in September 2008, notching five times in 56 reds games before moving to Olympiacos for an initial £3.3m fee in July 2010. Harry’s treble 1922 - We beat Cardiff City 5-1 at Anfield, our first ever meeting with the Bluebirds. Forward Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers scored a hat-trick, with Jock McNab bagging his first reds goal and Tom Bromilow also on target. Ex-Toffee Joe Clennell bagged one of his seven goals against the reds. 1927 - We again thumped five past City, this time without reply, our record defeat of the Welsh side. Tommy Reid bagged a brace, with Gordon Hodgson and Dick Edmed also on the scoresheet to add to a Tommy Lucas penalty, his third and final goal for the club. A thumping defeat 1963 - Jimmy Greaves scored the first four of his twelve goals against us, including a penalty, for Tottenham Hotspur in their 7-2 First Division win at White Hart Lane. Roger Hunt bagged both our consolation goals as Cliff Jones netted two of his five goals past us, with Frank Saul also on target for the home side. In comes Phil 1964 - Phil Chisnall signed from Manchester United for £25,000, after ten goals in 47 United games. However, he never established himself at Anfield, netting twice in nine appearances, leaving for Southend United in August 1967. A McEnglish debut 1893 - Keeper Billy McOwen made his reds bow as we drew 1-1 at Southport Central in our final ever Lancashire League fixture, with forward John Miller scoring his 25th and last goal in his 24th and final outing for the club. McOwen was the only Englishman to feature regularly in our ‘team of the Macs’, making 27 appearances in total. Midfielder Philip Kelly was playing his third and last reds game, with outside-right Tom Wyllie appearing for the 25th and last time. Most recently 1978 – We drew 1-1 at Bristol City in our most recent full game on this day, with Steve Heighway on target. Bob Paisley said afterwards, “City must have thought it was Christmas all over again. We presented them with a point.” Ex-red Peter Cormack struck for the home side, as well as missing a penalty, while Phil Neal played his 200th reds game. 1905 - We also visited Ashton Gate when Jack Cox struck the only goal to hand us victory in our Second Division encounter. This was our thirteenth away League win of the season, a club record since equalled in May 2009. Twice at Roker Park 1970 - Chris Lawler netted the only goal of the game late on to beat the Wearsiders. 1933 - We left Sunderland with a goalless draw in another top-flight meeting. Derby joy We have twice entertained Everton on this day in history. 1944 - Michael Hulligan bagged a brace with Cyril Done also on the scoresheet as we won a Liverpool Cup First Round second leg 3-0, with a further 45 minutes not adding to the score as the tie ended level. Reds farewells 1968 - Alf Arrowsmith played his 56th and final reds game in our 1-1 Easter Monday First Division draw at Sheffield United. Geoff Strong struck our goal from the spot, with Tony Currie on target for the home side. 1931 – Outside-left Fred Hopkin made his 360th and last appearance for the reds as we were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Birmingham City. 1911 – Forward Herbert Leavey played his fifth and last reds game as we beat Bury 2-0 at Anfield. Bill’s century 1949 - Bill Jones reached a century of League games for the reds as we lost 1-0 to Huddersfield Town at Anfield. Jimmy Glazzard bagged the first of his five reds strikes against the reds. Sami the best 2002 - Sami Hyypiä and future red Steve Finnan were both named in the PFA Team of the Year, while Steven Gerrard finished third in the vote for the Young Player of the Year, which was won by future red Craig Bellamy. First and last 1914 – Right-back Frank Grayer played his only reds game, with Jimmy Dawson netting his third and final goal in his fourteenth and last game for the club as we lost 2-1 at home to Manchester United, with George Wall bagging one of his ten goals against us and George Travers also netting. Grayer was so badly wounded during the First World War that he was unable to play football again. Red Scots in action 1950 - Billy Liddell played as Scotland lost a British International Championships encounter 1-0 to England at Hampden Park, with the game also counting as a World Cup qualifier. 1961 - Future red Ian St. John was in the Scotland side that trounced England 9-3 in a British International Championships game at Wembley Stadium. 1939 - Bill Shankly represented his country in another home international at Hampden, with England winning 2-1. Other internationals 1992 – Future red Jari Litmanen played for Finland in their 3-1 defeat by Brazil in Cuiabá. 1987 – Future red Øyvind Leonhardsen featured as Norway Under-16’s lost 2-0 to Cyprus in a tournament game in Austria. On the move 2015 - Future reds boss Jürgen Klopp announced his departure from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund at the end of that season, after seven campaigns in charge, having led them to two Bundesliga titles, the DFB-Pokal and two DFL-Supercups.

Macca the Manc 1991 - Steve McMahon was sold to Manchester City for £900,000. He had been Kenny Dalglish’s first signing, from Aston Villa for £350,000 in September 1985, and won three League titles, FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields in his six years at Anfield, netting fifty times in 277 reds games. Treble from out wide 1898 - Scottish outside-left Tommy Robertson scored a hat-trick as we won 3-1 at Blackburn Rovers in a First Division fixture. He bagged a total of 34 goals in 141 reds games. Fastest ever Toffee 1949 - Peter Farrell scored Everton’s fastest ever derby goal, after twelve seconds at the Kop end. The Blues led at half-time but two goals from Willie Fagan and another from Kevin Baron ensured we maintained our unbeaten home record that season as we won 3-1. A rare win at the Bridge 1966 - Our most recent game on Christmas Eve saw a Marvin Hinton own goal and a Geoff Strong strike give us a 2-1 win at Chelsea. 1938 - We also visited Stamford Bridge on Christmas Eve, when Jack Balmer nabbed our consolation in a 4-1 defeat. Joe Payne bagged a brace, with Harry Burgess scoring the final one of his nine goals past us and Dickie Spence netting the last of his six strikes against the reds. Signing on 1897 – Winger Jack Cox signed from Blackpool for £150, after netting twelve times in seventeen Second Division outings. He struck eighty times in 361 reds games, helping us to two League titles and the Second Division championship before returning to Bloomfield Road as Player/Manager in May 1909. 1895 – Keeper Harry Storer signed from Woolwich Arsenal for £75, taking over from the versatile Matt McQueen between our sticks. He made a total of 121 reds appearances before retiring in 1901. Unfortunately, he died in April 1908 aged just 37. At home for a change 1927 - Our only other home game of the eleven first-class games we have had on Christmas Eve over the years saw Tom Scott score his fourth and last reds goal with Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers also scoring to hand us a 2-0 top-flight victory over Manchester United. Disappointment down the East Lancs We have twice visited Manchester United on this day in history. 1921 – We held them to a goalless draw at Old Trafford. 1904 - We lost 3-1 in a Second Division meeting at their old Bank Street ground, with Jack Parkinson on target for the reds. Births and death 1998 – Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Aliister was born in Santa Rosa. He signed from Brighton & Hove Albion for a reported initial £35m in June 2023. 1942 - Short-lived outside-right Dave Wilson was born in Nelson. He signed from Preston North End for £20,000 in February 1967, having played in the FA Cup Final in 1964. However, he only made one senior appearance in his fifteen months at Anfield before returning to Deepdale. 1979 – Forward Tom Scott died. He arrived from Darlington in February 1925, despite Everton believing they had a deal in place to sign him. He struck four times in eighteen games before moving on to Bristol City in October 1928. Starting the holidays with a win 1892 - A Tom Wyllie goal was enough for us to win our first ever game on Christmas Eve, a Lancashire League match at South Shore. On the move 2014 - Emile Heskey signed for Bolton Wanderers, netting just three times in 48 appearances before being released in the summer of 2016. 2016 – Ex-reds winger Oussama Assaidi signed for Twente, netting nine times in 45 outings for the Dutch side. Wedding bells 2013 – Future red Adam Lallana married Emily Jubb at Poole Register Office in Dorset. 1897 – Future reds forward Sam Raybould married Selima Wilkes.

Happy birthdays 1971 - Full-back Rob Jones was born in Wrexham. The grandson of post-war utility man Bill Jones, he signed from Crewe Alexandra for £300,000 in October 1991 and played 243 times for the reds without ever getting on the scoresheet, before injury ended his career. He helped us to win the FA Cup and Coca Cola Cup in his eight years at Anfield. 1911 - Outside-right Berry Nieuwenhuys was born in Kroonstad in South Africa. He signed from Germiston Calies in September 1933 and struck 79 times in 257 reds games, helping us to the League title in 1947 before joining Arsenal later that year. He in fact scored on his 27th birthday as we drew 1-1 at Portsmouth, with Jock Anderson bagging one of his four goals against the reds as keeper Arthur Riley played his 300th League game for us. 1886 – Forward Herbert Leavey was born in Guildford. He signed from Plymouth Argyle in June 1910, only making five appearances before joining Barnsley in August 1911. 300 up for Stevie 2005 - Steven Gerrard played his 300th reds game, converting a late penalty with Xabi Alonso then also scoring as we won 2-0 at Aston Villa. First ever defeat 1892 - We registered our first ever competitive defeat as we lost 3-0 to Blackpool in the Lancashire League at their Raikes Hall Gardens ground. 1904 - We beat the Seasiders by the same score with Bobby Robinson netting a brace and Jack Parkinson also on target at Bloomfield Road. This was the sixth consecutive game in which Robinson had scored, in which time he had struck a total of ten times. Rushie back in action 1988 - Ian Rush scored his first goal since his return from Juventus as we beat newly promoted Middlesbrough 3-0 at Anfield to remain in fourth spot. John Aldridge and Peter Beardsley were also on target. 1910 - Sam Bowyer and Arthur Goddard struck as we left Ayresome Park with a top-flight point. George Elliott netted one of his eight goals against the reds, with Samuel McClure also on target. On the way to Gay Paree 1980 - We thumped Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen 4-0 at Anfield to progress to the Third Round of the European Cup 5-0 on aggregate. We scored through a Willie Miller own goal, Phil Neal, Kenny Dalglish’s header and Alan Hansen. Our next opponents were Bulgarians CSKA Sofia the following March. Most recently 2019 – Gini Wijnaldum opened the scoring as we beat Koninklijke Racing Club Genk 2-1 in a UEFA Champions League group game at Anfield. Mbwana Samatta headed in an equaliser before the break, but Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain secured victory in the second half. 2015 – Jordon Ibe struck the first of his four reds goals as we won 1-0 at Rubin Kazan in a UEFA Europa League group game. 2011 – Pepe Reina kept his 150th reds clean sheet as we were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Brendan Rodgers’ Swansea City, with Andy Carroll striking the crossbar early on. First and last 1932 - Forward Harold Taylor made the first of his 72 reds appearances as Leeds United’s Harry Duggan struck the only goal of our First Division encounter at Anfield, the first of his five goals against us. 1898 – Right-winger Bobby Marshall played his 21st and final reds game as we lost 3-0 at Newcastle United. Jock Peddie netted the first two of his five goals past the reds, with Sandy MacFarlane also on target. A rare defeat 1977 - We lost one of just eleven home League games throughout the whole of the 1970’s when Aston Villa won 2-1, with the reds benefiting from a Frank Carrodus own goal. Jimmy Case played his hundredth reds game, with Andy Gray bagging a brace for the visitors, the last of his four goals against us. Out of Europe 1974 - We returned from Hungary with a goalless draw after our European Cup Winners’ Cup Second Round meeting with Ferencvárosi, with two penalty shouts on Ray Kennedy waved away. Unfortunately, the 1-1 score from the Anfield first leg put us out on the away goals rule. Tommy Smith was later fined and given a European ban for allegedly feigning injury after a bottle was thrown onto the pitch late on. Devlin’s last 1927 – Centre-forward Willie Devlin grabbed his fifteenth and final reds goal as we drew a top-flight meeting 1-1 at Cardiff City. Shanks the boss 1956 - Bill Shankly was appointed Manager of Huddersfield Town. He led them to 49 wins in 129 League games in charge but could not get them out of the Second Division. He resigned after three years in the job to take over at Anfield, and the rest is history! An unhappy millennium 1955 - We lost 2-1 at Swansea Town in a Second Division fixture with Alan Arnell on target. This was our 1,000th away League game and Don Welsh’s 200th game in charge of the reds. Len Allchurch struck one of his five goals against the reds, with Terry Medwin also netting. Beating Forest twice We have twice entertained Nottingham Forest on this day in history, winning both encounters. 1994 - Robbie Fowler grabbed the only goal of the game. 1966 - Roger Hunt struck twice as we triumphed 4-0, with Geoff Strong and Peter Thompson also on target.
