Wembley glory at last 1965 – This day finally brought the FA Cup to Anfield for the first time in our history. The game against Leeds United was goalless after ninety minutes, with full-back Gerry Byrne playing most of the match with a broken collar-bone. Roger Hunt opened the scoring in extra time, before Billy Bremner equalised for the Yorkshire side with one of his five goals past us. With five minutes remaining, “up popped the head of Ian St. John” to win the cup. Winger Peter Thompson reached a century of reds outings in this game. 1971 – Peter Thompson played his 400th game for the club as we beat Southampton 1-0 at Anfield, thanks to an Emlyn Hughes goal as we finished the League season in fourth, ahead of the FA Cup Final. 1980 - We played in the only FA Cup Semi-final to go to a third replay, which we unfortunately lost to Arsenal courtesy of a Brian Talbot goal at Highfield Road, one of his six strikes against the reds, who went on to l1999ose the Final to Second Division West Ham United. 1996 - We also faced the Gunners, holding them to a goalless Premiership draw at Highbury. This was the first time since three substitutes were permitted for League games four years previously that we did not name a keeper on the bench, with Mark Kennedy, Ian Rush and Michael Thomas getting the nod. Luis and Mo the best 2014 - Luis Suárez was named as the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year for a season in which he struck 31 times in total in 37 reds outings as we came close to claiming the League title. 2018 - Mohamed Salah won the same award, towards the end of a season in which he notched 44 times in 52 games, helping us to reach the UEFA Champions League Final in Kyiv. On our way to Athens 2007 - Jamie Carragher played his ninetieth European game in our Champions League Semi-final second leg with Chelsea at Anfield, breaking Ian Callaghan’s club record. Daniel Agger converted a cleverly-worked free-kick to take the tie into extra time, following our single goal defeat in the first meeting. Dirk Kuyt had an effort ruled out for offside, and also hit the woodwork before Pepe Reina was the hero in a penalty shoot-out that we won 4-1, saving from both Geremi and Arjen Robben. Kuyt struck our decisive fourth spot-kick. This was the first time we had faced the same team in European competition in three consecutive seasons, as well as being the third round in a row in which Bolo Zenden had come up against a former employer, following ties with Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven. Striking legends in and out 1990 - Kenny Dalglish made his 515th and final appearance in our 1-0 home defeat of Derby County, thanks to a goal from Gary Gillespie, as we were awarded our eighteenth, and most recent, League title. He was aged 39 years 58 days, a post-war club record. This game had been postponed from February. 1972 - We also faced the Rams, losing a First Division fixture 1-0 at the Baseball Ground thanks to a goal from John McGovern. 1958 – Outside-right Fred Morris joined from Mansfield Town for a £7,000 fee. He bagged fourteen goals in 48 reds games, moving on to Crewe Alexandra for £4,000 in June 1960. 1914 – Defender Ernest Peake moved on to Third Lanark. He joined the reds as a Welsh international from his hometown club Aberystwyth Town in May 1908, netting six times in 55 games. 1899 – Forward Peter Kyle arrived from Clyde for £100, failing to score in five first-team games before moving on to Leicester Fosse in May 1900. On the same day, Scottish inside-right Andrew McCowie moved on to Woolwich Arsenal after netting eleven times in 35 games since signing from Cambuslang Hibernian in October 1896. Other arrivals 1973 - Jimmy Case signed from South Liverpool for £500. He went on to net 46 times in 269 reds games, helping us to three European Cups, four League titles, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields. 1902 – Keeper Peter Platt arrived from Blackburn Rovers, playing 44 times before moving on to Luton Town in 1904. He sadly died aged just 39 in a mini-flu epidemic in Nuneaton in January 1922. 1897 – Right-winger Bobby Marshall signed from Leith Athletic. He scored twice in 21 reds games, moving on to Portsmouth in 1899. Crashing out? 2019 – We lost 3-0 at Barcelona in the first leg of our UEFA Champions League Semi-final to leave our chances of reaching the Final in Madrid hanging by a thread, despite a decent performance. Ex-red Luis Suárez opened the scoring before Lionel Messi added a late brace. Gary Mac yet again 2001 - Gary McAllister scored for the fifth straight game in our 2-0 win at Bradford City as we headed towards the Champions League. Michael Owen nabbed the other goal in a game that was originally postponed the previous December. Also recently 2017 – Emre Can struck a spectacular goal, the only one of our trip to Watford. 2016 - We lost 3-1 at Swansea City, with left-back Brad Smith seeing red. André Ayew struck twice for the home side, with Jack Cork also on target, as Christian Benteke scored for the reds. 2012 – Brazilian left-back Fábio Aurélio played his 134th and last reds game as Fulham won for the first time at Anfield, so completing their first ever League double over us. A presentation was made to Brian Hall before the game, marking his retirement as Public Relations Manager, a post he had held since 1991. Martin Škrtel put through his own net as ex-reds reserve Alex Kačaniklić attempted to convert John Arne Riise’s cross for the only goal. 2011 - We beat Newcastle United 3-0 at Anfield. Maxi Rodríguez opened the scoring before Dirk Kuyt converted a penalty and Luis Suárez struck, with ex-Toon star Andy Carroll making a late cameo from the bench. Replay 86 2006 - The Replay 86 game was played at Anfield in front of 32,947 in aid of the Marina Dalglish Appeal. The two sides were representing the 1986 FA Cup Final teams, and the only goal came in the final minute, through former reds reserves striker John Durnin. Also against the Blues 1937 - Jack Balmer was on target as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Chelsea at Anfield in the final game of a League campaign that saw us finish in a disappointing eighteenth, just three points clear of relegation. Dickie Spence netted one of his six goals against the reds. On the same day, Bill Shankly was on the losing side at Wembley, as Preston North End lost 3-1 to Sunderland in the first FA Cup Final to be played in the month of May. Goals galore 1978 - King Kenny grabbed a hat-trick in our 4-0 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield, with Phil Neal adding a penalty. 1926 - Forward Tommy Reid scored both goals on his reds debut in our 2-2 home draw with Sheffield United, with outside-right Cyril Oxley playing his 34th and final reds game as we finished the season in sixth place. Harry Johnson scored two of his seven goals past us. 1999 - Less happily, Jamie Carragher scored an own goal as we came from 2-0 behind at half time to beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 at Anfield in the League, having already scored an own goal in the reverse fixture that season! Paul Ince struck with Steve McManaman netting his 66th and final reds goal after Jamie Redknapp’s spot-kick. Spurs’ Mauricio Taricco was sent off just before the break while Stig Inge Bjørnebye and Bjørn Tore Kvarme both played their final reds games, with the young Steven Gerrard instrumental in our comeback after coming off the bench at half time. Steffen Iversen had netted the other goal for the visitors. 1943 - Cyril Done struck for the fourth consecutive game, grabbing a brace as we beat Bolton Wanderers 4-0 in our Lancashire Cup Second Round second leg at Anfield, with Thomas Pearson and Jackie Campbell also on target. This game also counted towards the Wartime League. 1979 - We also faced the Trotters in a game originally postponed from three months earlier, when Ray Kennedy netted twice and David Johnson and Kenny Dalglish were also on the scoresheet in a 4-1 win in wintry conditions at Burnden Park, with the home side’s score coming from a Graeme Souness own goal. Bolton keeper Jim McDonagh said afterwards, “Liverpool are perfection. This team would have been good enough to win the 1978 World Cup!” Eleven in a row 1982 - We won 2-0 at home to Nottingham Forest, our eleventh successive League win - a joint club record with 2013/14, and tenth straight win in all competitions, a then club record. Craig Johnston bagged both goals. Bob off the mark 1948 – Left-half Bob Paisley struck the first of his twelve reds goals as ended the season in tenth by beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Anfield, with Jack Balmer also on target. Another trophy 1946 - We beat Everton 3-1 at Anfield to claim the Liverpool Senior Cup. Bill Jones and Harry Eastham netted for the reds, with the Blues’ Purvis putting through his own net. Jameo off 1993 - David James was dismissed at Norwich City on the hour mark with David Phillips netting the only goal of the game past Mike Hooper from the subsequent spot-kick, as he became the first substitute keeper to take the field for the reds in the Premier League, in his 73rd and final senior reds appearance. This was a vital result as we finished in sixth, three places and three points behind City who reached the UEFA Cup, which we failed to do. English reds 1964 - Roger Hunt scored in England’s 3-0 victory over ‘Young England’. 1996 - Michael Owen netted a brace for the Under-16’s as they beat Turkey 2-1 in a European Championships group game in Austria. 2002 – David Mannix and David Raven both played for England Under-17’s in their goalless draw with host nation Denmark in a European Championships Finals group game. 2012 – Ex-reds boss Roy Hodgson was appointed Manager of the senior England side. 2016 – Curtis Jones struck as England Under-15’s lost 7-5 to Croatia, with clubmates Elijah Dixon-Bonner and Bobby Duncan also featuring. 2022 – Carter Pinnington featured for England Under-15’s as they lost a friendly 3-1 to Romania. An English treble 1935 - Sam English scored a hat-trick as we beat Exeter City 3-1 in a testimonial match for former reds full-back Jimmy Gray at St. James Park. Scottish-born South African international Gray had only ever played one senior reds game, but turned out 221 times for the Grecians, helping them to finish runners up in the Third Division South in 1933. First and last caps 1985 - Michael Robinson won his first cap as a Queens Park Rangers player, and nineteenth in all, as Norway held the Republic of Ireland to a goalless draw in a World Cup qualifier in Dublin. His former clubmates Jim Beglin, Mark Lawrenson and Ronnie Whelan all also featured. Ex-red Avi Cohen and future reds John Barnes and Mark Wright all also won international caps that day. 1991 - Poland’s European Championships qualifying visit to Lansdowne Road also ended goalless. This was the twentieth meeting between the countries, with John Aldridge winning his final cap as a Real Sociedad player, and 39th in total. Ray Houghton, Steve Staunton and ex-reds reserve Kevin Sheedy also played. John Barnes, Steve Nicol, ex-red Jim Magilton and future reds Stig Inge Bjørnebye, Istvan Kozma, Øyvind Leonhardsen, Gary McAllister, Colin Pascoe, Karl-Heinz Riedle and Dean Saunders all also represented their countries on the same day. Moving on 1992 – Future reds centre-half Glenn Hysén signed for GAIS, having been released by the reds after three goals in 93 outings since signing from Fiorentina for £600,000 in June 1989. He helped us to our most recent title win in 1990, as well as the FA Charity Shield on his debut. Other games on this day 1957 – Tony Rowley and Billy Liddell netted as we beat Bristol City 2-1 in a Second Division encounter in L4, to finish the season in third place, just missing out on promotion again. 1920 – Harry Chambers nabbed the only goal of our visit to Sunderland as our season ended with a fifth-place finish, just behind the hosts. St. Michael the Dad 2003 - Michael Owen became a father when his future bride Louise Bonsall gave birth to their daughter, Gemma Rose. Other internationals 1975 – John Toshack played for Wales as they won a European Championships qualifier 3-1 in Luxembourg. 1993 – Roy Hodgson took charge of Switzerland as they beat Italy 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Bern. 1994 – Future red Rigobert Song played for Cameroon as they drew a friendly 2-2 in South Korea.

Happy birthdays 1951 – Forward David Johnson was born in Liverpool. The ex-Blue arrived from Ipswich Town in August 1976 for a club record £200,000 fee, and went on to win three League titles, European Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields, scoring 78 times in 213 reds games. He was the first player to score for both sides in Merseyside derbies and returned to Goodison in August 1982 for £100,000. 1993 – Brazilian midfielder Fabinho was born in Campinas. He signed from Monaco for an initial £39m in July 2018, scoring eleven times in 219 outings before moving on to Al-Ittihad for a reported £40m last July. He helped us to claim the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield. 1974 - Sander Westerveld was born in Enschede. The Dutch keeper made 103 reds appearances, helping us to five trophies in 2001 before being replaced by Jerzy Dudek, moving to Real Sociedad for £3.49m that December. He is now coaching for Ajax Cape Town in South Africa, where he ended his playing career. 1992 – Reserves forward Michael Ngoo was born in Walthamstow. He signed from Southend United in September 2009 for a potential fee of up to £250,000. He was released last summer after several loan spells away from Anfield, signing for Kilmarnock in August 2014. Debutants 1993 - Dominic Matteo made his reds bow in our 1-1 draw at Manchester City, when Ian Rush netted a late equaliser after David White had opened the scoring with the last of his five strikes past us. 1991 - Jamie Redknapp made his debut at the Stade de l’Abbé-Deschamps as we lost 2-0 to Auxerre in the first leg of our UEFA Cup Second Round tie with Bruce Grobbelaar in fine form to keep the score down. 1937 - Forwards Willie Fagan and John Shafto both debuted in our 1-1 draw with Leicester City, with Alf Hanson on target for the reds at Anfield. 1926 - We also entertained the Foxes in the First Division, when Harry Chambers netted the only goal of the game very late on. Milestone games 1971 - Ian Callaghan played his 500th reds game as we beat Huddersfield Town 2-0 in a League match at Anfield. Tommy Smith had a penalty saved by keeper David Lawson but he reacted quickly to score from the rebound, with Alun Evans also on target. 1909 – Forward Jack Parkinson bagged a brace as he reached a century of reds outings as we beat The Wednesday 3-1 at Anfield, with Jimmy Stewart also netting. Sam Kirkman struck the first of his four goals past us. 1976 – Ray Kennedy scored as we drew 1-1 with Leeds United at Elland Road, with Phil Neal making the first of his club record 417 consecutive appearances. Off the mark 1897 – Right-winger Bobby Marshall nabbed his only two reds goals as we beat Derby County 4-2 at Anfield after Joe McQue and Dan Cunliffe had also struck. Steve Bloomer struck one of his fourteen goals against us, with Alexander Maconnachie also on target for the Rams. Against the Addicks We have faced Charlton Athletic twice on this day in history 1996 – We returned from Selhurst Park with a 1-1 League Cup Third Round draw when Robbie Fowler grabbed our goal. 2004 - John Arne Riise and Luis García struck as we won our Premiership meeting 2-0. This was our 2,000th League match at Anfield. Keeping ends 1999 - Brad Friedel played his 31st and final reds game in our 1-1 draw at Southampton. Titi Camara grabbed our late equaliser after Norwegian midfielder Trond Egil Soltvedt had netted. 1920 - Goalkeeper Harry McNaughton played his only reds game, helping us to a home derby victory. Dick Forshaw nabbed the only goal of the game. Also in Europe 2019 – We won 4-1 at Koninklijke Racing Club Genk in the UEFA Champions League group stage with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain netting either side of half time. Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah both scored late on before Stephen Odey grabbed a late consolation. 1974 - We entertained Hungarians Ferencvárosi when Kevin Keegan struck as we were held to a draw in the Second Round of the European Cup Winners’ Cup, with keeper István Géczi in outstanding form. The visitors bagged a very late equaliser through Mate that eventually saw us crash out at this Second Round stage on the away goals rule. Egged 1965 – We lost 3-0 at West Bromwich Albion. During the game, a hard-boiled egg was thrown onto the pitch, which Tommy Smith handed over to the referee, who stopped the game while he spoke to the police, with a loudspeaker announcement threatening to call off the game. Tony Brown opened the scoring with the first of his eight goals past us, with Clive Clark bagging one of his seven and John Kaye one of his four as centre-half Ron Yeats played his 200th reds game. Ex-reds in charge 1993 - Phil Neal was appointed Manager of Coventry City following the resignation of Bobby Gould. He remained in the post for sixteen months, only losing twenty of his 67 games in charge. His major legacy to the club was selling Phil Babb to the reds, and signing Dion Dublin, as well as ex-red Mike Marsh. 2006 - Paul Ince was appointed Player/Manager of Macclesfield Town. He led them to fourteen victories in 35 games and remained in charge until June 2007, when he left to take over at MK Dons. 1998 - Nigel Clough signed for Burton Albion from Manchester City as Player/Manager. He led them into the Conference, moving on to take over at Derby County in January 2009. 2013 – Clough was appointed Manager of Sheffield United, leading them to an eleventh-place finish in League One and the FA Cup Semi-Final in his first season in charge. Gordon for the FA 1963 - Gordon Milne turned out for an England side as they faced a Rest of the World eleven in an FA Centenary game at Wembley, winning 2-1. Up against the Shakers 1915 - We lost 2-1 at Gigg Lane in a Wartime League match with Fred Pagnam grabbing our consolation. 1954 - Bury held us to a 1-1 draw in our Second Division meeting, with Eric Anderson on the scoresheet. Stan Pearson struck one of his eleven goals against the reds. Beating Boro 1948 - Jack Balmer and Albert Stubbins struck as we beat Middlesbrough 4-0 in a top-flight meeting at Anfield. Billy Liddell converted a penalty, with the scoring completed by a Billy Whitaker own goal. 2013 – Ex-reds centre-half Daniel Ayala joined Middlesbrough on loan from Norwich City, making the move permanent three months later for £350,000. Farewells 1915 - Centre-forward Tommy Gracie died in Glasgow. He signed from Everton for £150 in February 1912, but only managed to score five times in 34 appearances for the reds, returning north of the border to join Heart Of Midlothian in May 1914. 1911 – Outside-right Andrew Kelvin died aged just 42. He signed from his hometown club Kilmarnock in 1892, returning there after just six reds games the following year. 1870 – Scottish half-back Tom Cleghorn died. He signed from Blackburn Rovers in March 1896, scoring once in seventy games before moving to Portsmouth in August 1899. He helped Pompey to claim both the Southern Football League First Division and Western Football League First Division titles in 1901/02, ending his career with Plymouth Argyle. 2017 - Jörg Schmadtke resigned as Co-CEO Sports for 1. FC Köln Ltd, having been in the role since June 2013. He took over as the reds’ Sporting Director in May 2023. Other reds game 1982 – Mark Lawrenson was on target as we drew 1-1 at Stoke City with Mickey Thomas scoring a spectacular equaliser. Youngsters in action 2018 - Future red Jakub Ojrzyński debuted for Poland Under-16’s in their 4-1 friendly win over Austria. 2015 – Herbie Kane won his fifteenth and last cap for England Under-17’s as they drew 0-0 with South Korea in a World Championship Finals group game in Colombia, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. 2010 - Adam Morgan, Matty Regan and Raheem Sterling all featured as England Under-17’s beat Poland 1-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Georgia. 2002 – Future reds coach Gary O’Neil scored on his debut for England Under-20’s as they won a friendly 2-1 in Germany. Michael is officially the best 2000 - Michael Owen was named the Premiership’s Young Player of the Month for September. He had scored six goals during the month, including a hat-trick against Aston Villa, and he was the unanimous choice of the League Managers’ Association to secure the award.

Thommo off the mark 1973 – Phil Thompson bagged his first reds goal in our 2-0 home defeat of Derby County, with Kevin Keegan adding a late penalty. Ray Clemence was playing his 200th reds game. 1979 – We thumped Tranmere Rovers 4-0 in a League Cup Second Round second leg at Anfield after the first game ended goalless. Phil Thompson struck his thirteenth and final goal for the club in his 300th outing before Kenny Dalglish bagged a brace. David Fairclough was also on target, with all the goals coming in the second half. For Jamie 2010 – Jamie Carragher’s testimonial took place at Anfield in front of more than 35,000, with the reds beating an Everton side 4-1. Luis García opened the scoring with Carra converting a spot-kick for the reds shortly before half time. Joe Cole made the score 3-0 with his first reds strike but Jamie then scored from the spot for Everton! Nathan Eccleston also opened his account for the reds. Babb strikes 1996 - Phil Babb notched his only reds strike, the only goal of the game against his former club Coventry City at Highfield Road, in what was Roy Evans’ hundredth League game in charge. 1976 - We also faced the Sky Blues, winning 3-1 at Anfield thanks to goals from Kevin Keegan, David Johnson and John Toshack. Mick Ferguson had shocked the home side by scoring in the first minute. Happy birthdays 1891 - Forward Fred Pagnam was born in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire. He signed from Blackpool in May 1914, and so could only bag thirty goals in 39 reds games before joining Arsenal in October 1919, with whom he kept up his remarkable strike-rate. 1930 – Right-half Roy Saunders was born in Salford. He signed from Hull City in May 1948 and netted once in 146 reds appearances before joining Swansea Town in March 1959 in part-exchange for forward Des Palmer, who never featured for our first team. He was the father of 1990’s reds striker Dean and died in January 2009. 1980 – Michael Beale was born in Bromley, London. He joined the Academy as an Under-15’s coach in 2003, eventually progressing to be in charge of the Under-21’s. He left for São Paulo in January 2017, returning to the reds later that year for a brief spell before joining Steven Gerrard at Rangers. 1988 - Midfielder Ryan Flynn was born in Falkirk. He was awarded with a full-time contract at Melwood in the summer of 2006 having impressed in the previous season’s victorious FA Youth Cup campaign, including notching a goal in the Final. He made a loan move to his hometown club permanent in September 2009. The Bridge opens 1905 - The reds helped Chelsea to open Stamford Bridge, taking part in the first ever game played there. Unfortunately, we started as we meant to continue at the Bridge, losing 4-0 in a friendly encounter. 1909 - We visited there again, with outside-left John McDonald and inside-right Jimmy Stewart making their reds bows as we lost 2-1 in a season opener, with Joe Hewitt nabbing our consolation. George Hilsdon’s penalty was the last of his five goals against the reds, with Jimmy Windridge also netting. An unhappy millennium 1971 - We lost 2-0 in a League game at Tottenham Hotspur in what was our 3,000th first-class fixture, with Martin Chivers nabbing one of his seven goals past us and Martin Peters scoring one of his fourteen. Off the mark 1912 - John Tosswill scored his only goal for the club on his reds debut as we beat Oldham Athletic 2-0 at Anfield, with Tom Miller also netting. Centre-half Bob Ferguson also made his debut, following his signing from Third Lanark. 1926 – Winger Dick Edmed bagged the first of his 46 reds goals as we lost 2-1 at Derby County, with Jimmy Gill bagging one of his six goals past us and Harry Bedford scoring the first of his nine. Starting off with a stalemate 1897 - We kicked off our season with a 2-2 draw against Stoke, with inside-forward Willie Walker scoring on his reds bow and Frank Becton also on the scoresheet. Forward Dan Cunliffe and right-winger Bobby Marshall also debuted as Billy Maxwell bagged the first of six goals against the reds, with Tom Hill also on target. 1933 - We also left the Victoria Ground with a share of the spoils, with Harold Taylor netting as we drew 1-1 with Stoke City, as they were known by then. Forward Jack ‘Nipper’ Roberts made his only senior reds outing in this game, while Harry Davies nabbed his fourth and final goal past us. Disappointment against the Trotters and Terriers 1911 - We lost 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers in a top-flight meeting, with Jack Parkinson grabbing our consolation and John Bovill and half-back Harry Lowe both debuting. Alf Bentley struck one of his four goals against the reds, with Harold Hilton also scoring. 1915 - We returned to Burnden Park, drawing a Wartime League fixture 1-1, with Fred Pagnam netting. We have also faced Huddersfield Town twice on this day in history. 1929 - We won a top-flight encounter 3-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Gordon Hodgson, James Clark and Henry Race. 1957 - We also played them in the Second Division with Tony Rowley on the scoresheet in a 2-1 defeat at Leeds Road. Stan Howard bagged a brace for the home side. In and out 1937 - Left-back Ernie Blenkinsop played his 71st and final reds game as Charlton Athletic won 2-1 at Anfield, with Jack Balmer on target and George Tadman and future reds boss Don Welsh netting for the visitors. Centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw was also making his final appearance for the club, turning out for the 291st time. 1912 – Full-back Sam Speakman signed from amateur side Colne but could only play 26 first-team games without scoring before joining South Liverpool in 1920. 1901 – Inside-forward Tommy Green signed from New Brighton Tower, notching once in seven outings before joining Swindon Town in April 1903. A win at Highbury 1982 - David Hodgson’s first reds strike and a Phil Neal goal handed us a 2-0 win at Arsenal. The author was present at this game, seeing the reds win for the first time. Happy birthdays 1971 - Full-back Rob Jones was born in Wrexham. The grandson of post-war utility man Bill Jones, he signed from Crewe Alexandra for £300,000 in October 1991 and played 243 times for the reds without ever getting on the scoresheet, before injury ended his career. He helped us to win the FA Cup and Coca Cola Cup in his eight years at Anfield. 1911 - Outside-right Berry Nieuwenhuys was born in Kroonstad in South Africa. He signed from Germiston Calies in September 1933 and struck 79 times in 257 reds games, helping us to the League title in 1947 before joining Arsenal later that year. He in fact scored on his 27th birthday as we drew 1-1 at Portsmouth, with Jock Anderson bagging one of his four goals against the reds as keeper Arthur Riley played his 300th League game for us. 1886 – Forward Herbert Leavey was born in Guildford. First and last 1932 - Forward Harold Taylor made the first of his 72 reds appearances as Leeds United’s Harry Duggan struck the only goal of our First Division encounter at Anfield, the first of his five goals against us. 1898 – Right-winger Bobby Marshall played his 21st and final reds game as we lost 3-0 at Newcastle United. Out of Europe 1974 - We returned from Hungary with a goalless draw after our European Cup Winners’ Cup Second Round meeting with Ferencvárosi, with two penalty shouts on Ray Kennedy waved away.
