Happy birthday Sami
1973 – Ex-reds centre-half Sami Hyypiä was born in Helsinki. The mighty Finn played 464 reds games, netting 35 times and helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two League Cups and two UEFA Super Cups following his £2.5m bargain capture from Dutch side Willem II in May 1999. He left the club in the summer of 2009 to sign for Bayer 04 Leverkusen on a free transfer, subsequently moving into management.

Other reds celebrating
1998 – Trent Alexander-Arnold was born in Liverpool, signing pro terms on his seventeenth birthday. He was at the Academy since the age of six, striking sixteen times in 273 senior appearances across his first seven seasons as he helped the reds to claim the League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield.
1890 – Centre-half Walter Wadsworth was born in Bootle. The hard man was signed from Ormskirk in April 1912, going on to score eight goals in 242 reds games, some alongside his brother Harold at outside-right as he helped us to claim back-to-back League titles in 1922 and 1923.

1990 – Uruguayan centre-half Sebastián Coates was born in Montevideo. He signed from Nacional for £7m in August 2011, scoring twice in 24 games before joining Sunderland for £4m in July 2015 after a season there on loan. He played for Uruguay Under-20’s on his nineteenth birthday as they were beaten 3-1 by Brazil in their World Cup Finals Round of Sixteen encounter in Egypt.
1995 – Reserves centre-back Lloyd Jones was born. He signed from his hometown club Plymouth Argyle for £150,000 in June 2011, turning pro in May 2013 after sitting on the bench in our Premiership visit to Fulham earlier that month. He skippered our Under-21’s for more than a season, moving on permanently to Luton Town in January 2018 after a series of loan spells.

Didi makes Wembley history
2000 - Dietmar Hamann scored the last ever goal at the old Wembley as Germany beat England 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier. Christian Ziege was winning his first cap as a reds player, with Michael Owen and future red Nick Barmby also playing. Kevin Keegan resigned as England boss that evening.

First treble
1893 - James Stott bagged our first ever League hat-trick in our 6-0 Second Division defeat of Middlesbrough Ironopolis, with Duncan McLean scoring his first goal for the club and Hugh McQueen and David Henderson also on target.

Harry all smiles
1922 - Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers scored our first ever derby hat-trick in a 5-1 League win at Anfield that also counted for the Lancashire Senior Cup, although his first goal is also sometimes credited as an own goal by keeper Tom Fern. We went behind early on to a Billy Williams strike, but fought back in the second half. Jock McNab and birthday boy Tom Bromilow also struck as we hit the Blues for five for the first time, with the Kop forgetting the opener and adopting a new chant, “One two, one two three, one two three four, five nil”, which is now part of ‘Poor Scouser Tommy’. We went on to claim our third League title that season.

1972 - We hosted another derby fixture when Peter Cormack headed in the only goal of the game. Bill Shankly was presented with the Bell’s Manager of the Month awards for September and the previous April before the match.
1931 – We beat Everton 3-2 in a Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round tie at Goodison, with Bob Done converting a penalty and Gordon Hodgson bagging a brace.

Other birthdays
1894 - Left-half Tom Bromilow was born in Liverpool. He signed professional terms in 1919, having asked for a trial straight from the army. He went on to make 375 appearances, scoring eleven times while helping us to claim two League titles in successive seasons in the 1920’s, as well as earning full international honours with England.
1920 - Centre-half Allenby Chilton was born in South Hylton, County Durham. He signed for the reds as an amateur in summer 1938, before moving to Manchester United that November, without making a senior reds appearance. He won the first of his two England caps on his thirtieth birthday in a 4-1 British International Championships win in Northern Ireland.

1964 - Paul Stewart was born in Manchester. He was one of Graeme Souness’s failed buys, arriving from Tottenham Hotspur for £2.3m in July 1992, scoring three times in 42 uninspiring appearances before leaving for free for Sunderland in March 1996 after a successful loan spell.

Most recently
2018 – We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by champions Manchester City, with Riyad Mahrez blasting a late spot kick over the bar for the visitors.

Spurs stalemates
We have hosted Tottenham Hotspur twice on this day in history, with both matches ending all square.
2007 - We suffered our thousandth draw in the League with Fernando Torres heading a late equaliser after the visitors had come from behind following Andriy Voronin’s opener. Future red Robbie Keane struck two of his five goals past us.
1969 - The game ended goalless as Ian St. John played his 400th reds game.

Debutants
1961 - Alf Arrowsmith made his reds bow in our 2-0 Second Division defeat at Middlesbrough, our first reverse in the twelfth game of this promotion-winning campaign. Centre-half Dick White unfortunately put through his own net twice!
1980 - We also faced Boro when Terry McDermott struck twice, including a penalty, in a 4-2 home win, with Ray Kennedy and Kenny Dalglish also on target. Alan Hansen played his hundredth League game that day, with future red Craig Johnston and Božo Janković on target for the visitors.

1986 - Striker John Durnin made his first-team debut in our 3-2 League Cup win at Fulham, with winger Brian Mooney making his only reds appearance, as a substitute for Jim Beglin. Steve McMahon opened the scoring with Jan Mølby adding a penalty to a Paul Parker own goal. This was Kenny Dalglish’s fiftieth victory as reds boss, in just his 77th game in charge.

1950 - Centre-half Jack Heydon debuted in our goalless top-flight draw with Stoke City at Anfield.
2012 – The Potters held us to another blank stalemate in L4, with Luis Suárez, Raheem Sterling and Martin Škrtel all striking the woodwork.

Cally’s triple century
1967 - Ian Callaghan played his 300th reds game as we lost 2-1 at Leicester City in a League meeting, with Ian St. John netting our consolation and Mike Stringfellow nabbing the last two of his five goals for the Foxes against the reds.

Thumping the Canaries
1978 – We won 4-1 at Norwich City with Steve Heighway bagging a brace inside the first ten minutes. David Johnson and Jimmy Case struck before John Ryan converted a late penalty for the home side.

International beginnings and end
2020 – Curtis Jones and Rhys Williams both debuted for England Under-21’s in their 3-3 European Championships qualifier in Andorra. On the same day, Diogo Jota won his first cap as a red in Portugal’s goalless friendly draw with Spain in Lisbon, while ex-red Emre Can faced future red Ozan Kabak as Germany drew 3-3 with Turkey in Cologne.
2010 – Future red Philippe Coutinho won his first senior cap, playing alongside Lucas as Brazil beat Iran 3-0 in a friendly in Abu Dhabi.
2000 - Ex-red Stig Inge Bjørnebye won his 75th and final international cap as Norway drew a World Cup qualifier 1-1 with Wales in Cardiff. He played alongside a former Anfield clubmate, Øyvind Leonhardsen, who won his 68th cap, while future red Paul Jones was in the Welsh goal.
1992 – They also played in a World Cup qualifier while both were still Rosenborg BK players, as Norway won 2-0 in San Marino.

2016 – Christian Benteke won his first cap as a Crystal Palace player in Belgium’s 4-0 trouncing of Bosnia-Herzegovina in a World Cup qualifier in Brussels. Meanwhile, Ragnar Klavan skippered Estonia in their 4-0 thumping of Gibraltar in another qualifier in Tallinn. Gini Wijnaldum, future reds Xherdan Shaqiri and Virgil van Dijk, and ex-reds Péter Gulácsi and Krisztián Nemeth also featured in qualifiers that day.
2017 - Ryan Babel won his first cap as a Beşiktaş J.K. player as the Netherlands won a World Cup qualifier 3-1 in Belarus with Gini Wijnaldum and future red Virgil van Dijk both also featuring. Future red Naby Keïta skippered Guinea, scoring and also being dismissed as they were beaten 4-1 at home by Tunisia in another qualifier. Sadio Mané and future reds loanee Victor Moses also played in World Cup qualifiers that day, with Ragnar Klavan skippering Estonia and ex-red Péter Gulácsi facing future red Xherdan Shaqiri.
2021 – Liam Millar won his first cap for Canada since joining Basel in their 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw in Mexico. Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Takumi Minamino, ex-reds Rhian Brewster and Luis Suárez, and future reds Luis Díaz, Wataru Endō and Darwin Núñez all also played for their countries.

A pastoral death
2002 - 1940’s reds centre-forward Arthur Shepherd died. His brothers Joe and full-back Bill also both played for the reds at the same time. Arthur never made our first team in peacetime, but did net twelve times in eleven wartime games for us.

Last strikes
1911 – Centre-half Jimmy Harrop scored his fourth and last reds goal as we lost 2-1 at home to Blackburn Rovers. Walter Aitkenhead netted one of his four goals past us, with Johnny Orr bagging one of his five strikes against the reds.
1933 – Chelsea lost 3-0 at Anfield with forward Dave Wright bagging his 35th and last goal for the club. Gordon Hodgson and Sam English were also on the scoresheet.

Another rare excursion up front
1899 - Centre-back Alex Raisbeck played his second and final match at centre-forward, as we lost 2-0 at home to Derby County thanks to a Steve Bloomer brace, two of his fourteen goals against us, with forward Abe Foxall playing his only reds game. This was our seventh straight defeat that season, and eighth including the final game of the previous campaign.
1905 - We also entertained the Rams when Jack Cox struck twice in our 4-1 win, with our other goals coming from Arthur Goddard and Robert Robinson.

Mixed derby fortunes
1959 - We won the first leg of our Floodlight Challenge Cup 3-0 against the Blues at Goodison Park, thanks to a Roger Hunt brace and goal from Johnny Wheeler. We lost the Anfield return 2-0 three weeks later to claim the trophy for the second of three times.
1939 - Worse occurred when we lost a friendly 4-1 at Anfield with Phil Taylor bagging our consolation.

Thumping Anfield wins
1895 - We trounced Crewe Alexandra 6-1 in a Second Division encounter with George Allan, Fred Geary and Jimmy Ross all netting twice each, with these being Geary’s first reds strikes.
1981 - Ian Rush struck his first two reds goals in domestic competition as we beat Third Division Exeter City 5-0 in the first leg of our League Cup Second Round tie, with Kenny Dalglish reaching a century of reds goals and Terry McDermott and Ronnie Whelan also on target.

A Croatian legend honoured
2002 - Igor Bišcan played in Zagreb for a Croatia 1998 side as they lost 2-1 to a Rest Of The World XI in Zvonimir Boban’s testimonial. Tennis player Goran Ivanisevic scored for the Croatia team, while Jean-Pierre Papin and Leonardo netted the other goals.

Youngsters in action
1997 - Future red Milan Baroš scored on his debut for the Czech Republic Under-16’s as they beat Bavaria 3-0 in a friendly in Tachov.
2005 - Besian Idrizaj made his debut for Austria Under-21’s, appearing in their 2-1 defeat of Scott Carson’s England at Elland Road, with future red James Milner also featuring. Meanwhile, Anthony Le Tallec scored in his fourth consecutive Under-21’s game, grabbing a treble with Florent Sinama-Pongolle also playing in France’s 3-0 win in another qualifier in Switzerland. Ramon Calliste was also in international action that day.
2010 – Danny Wilson played as Scotland Under-21’s lost the first leg of their European Championships Play-off 2-1 in Iceland. Meanwhile, Lucas featured as the senior Brazil side beat Iran 3-0 in a friendly in Abu Dhabi, with Péter Gulácsi also in international action.
2015 – Future red Marko Grujić featured for Serbia Under-21’s as they thumped Andorra 5-0 in a European Championships qualifying win in Novi Sad, with future red Javier Manquillo also playing at this level.

2016 - Trent Alexander-Arnold scored his first two goals for England Under-19's, with one coming from the spot in their 3-2 friendly win in Croatia. On the same day, Ovie Ejaria and future red Dominic Solanke both debuted for England Under-20’s as they beat Germany 3-1 in a friendly in Huddersfield, with Marko Grujić also in international action.
2011 – Luis Suárez netted while reaching half a century of caps in Uruguay’s 4-2 World Cup qualifying defeat of Bolivia in Montevideo, with ex-red Raul Meireles also reaching that milestone in Portugal’s 5-3 defeat of Iceland in Porto. Ex-red Xabi Alonso struck as Spain won a Euro 2012 qualifier 2-0 in the Czech Republic, while Adam Morgan was on target for England Under-19’s in their 1-0 defeat of Portugal in the Limoges Tournament. Djibril Cissé won his first cap as a Lazio player, with Christian Poulsen playing his first game for Denmark since joining Évian Thonon Gaillard. Alberto Aquilani, Craig Bellamy, Conor Coady, Stewart Downing, Dirk Kuyt, Jack Robinson, Martin Škrtel and ex-reds Álvaro Arbeloa, Milan Baroš, Milan Jovanović, Robbie Keane, Chris Mavinga, Nikolay Mihaylov, Fernando Torres and future reds Joe Allen, Ragnar Klavan, Dejan Lovren, Simon Mignolet and Xherdan Shaqiri were all also in international action, with John Toshack taking charge of FYR Macedonia.

1995 - Future red Patrik Berger netted as the Czech Republic won a European Championships qualifier in Belarus 2-0.
2000 - Ex-red Don Hutchison struck as Scotland won a World Cup qualifier 2-0 in San Marino. Also in international action were Stéphane Henchoz, Sami Hyypiä, future reds Nicolas Anelka, Yossi Benayoun, Jerzy Dudek, Steve Finnan, Robbie Keane and Jari Litmanen, and ex-reds Jim Magilton and Jason McAteer.
2008 – Future red Christian Benteke scored from the spot as Belgium Under-19’s won a friendly 5-0 in Estonia.

2006 - Ex-red Milan Baroš grabbed a brace as the Czech Republic thumped San Marino 7-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Liberec. On the same day, Steve Finnan and future red Robbie Keane played for Steve Staunton’s Republic of Ireland, with Daniel Agger, Luis García, Sami Hyypiä, Dirk Kuyt, John Arne Riise, future reds Ryan Babel, Yossi Benayoun, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Fernando Torres and Andriy Voronin and ex-red Jari Litmanen also featuring in qualifiers, with ex-red Rigobert Song also in international action and Roy Hodgson taking charge of Finland.

Bells in charge
2006 - Craig Bellamy captained Wales for the first time, with ex-red Paul Jones winning his fiftieth cap as John Toshack’s Wales were trounced 5-1 by Slovakia in Cardiff. Gareth Bale became Wales’ youngest ever senior goalscorer, aged just seventeen years and 83 days. On the same day, the record attendance for a home England international away from Wembley Stadium was set as 72,062 saw England held to a goalless draw by FYR Macedonia in another qualifier at Old Trafford. Peter Crouch, Steven Gerrard and future red Stewart Downing all played. Also in international action that day were Adam Hammill, Craig Lindfield, ex-red El-Hadji Diouf and future reds Lucas Leiva, Nikolay Mihaylov and Christian Poulsen.

Recent reds milestones
2007 - Jamie Carragher’s restaurant Café Sports England on Stanley Street in Liverpool opened. Guests at the VIP opening night included Daniel Agger, Xabi Alonso, Steven Gerrard and ex-reds Kenny Dalglish, Alan Hansen, Michael Owen and Phil Thompson. Unfortunately, the business went bust in October 2013.
2011 - Martin Škrtel became a father to Matteo.

Other reds games
1975 – Jimmy Case scored as Burnley held us to a 1-1 draw with Burnley in a League Cup Third Round tie at Anfield, although we lost the second leg at Turf Moor.
1964 – We beat Sheffield United 3-1 in L4. Roger Hunt struck either side of the first of Alan Burchenall’s four goals against the reds before the break. Hunt netted again in the second half, with Bobby Graham also on the scoresheet.

On the move
2009 - Steve Staunton took over as Manager of Darlington. He was sacked in March 2010 with the Quakers at the bottom of the League and facing relegation to the Conference. He had won just four of his 23 League matches in charge.
2008 - Joe Allen joined Wrexham on loan from Swansea City, netting once in just two outings for the Dragons.

1898 – Inside-forward Frank Becton moved on to Sheffield United. The England international had signed from his hometown club Preston North End for £200 in March 1895, notching 42 times in 86 reds games.
2022 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper signed a new contract as Head Coach of Nottingham Forest. He had taken them from bottom of the Championship into the Premier League in his first season but was sacked in December 2023 after leading them to 42 victories in 108 games in charge.
